As Catholics, we condemn violence of any kind. In light of recent world events, let us unite in prayer for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the conflict in the Holy Land: O God, merciful and strong, who crush wars and cast down the proud, be pleased to banish violence swiftly from our midst and to wipe away all tears, so that we may all truly deserve to be called your children. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen. - Roman Missal, Collect Prayer for In Time of War or Civil Disturbance
Cardinal Mario Grech, the Secretary General of the Synod, has called Catholics worldwide to unite in prayer for the Synod on Synodality which began in Rome on October 4th. Cardinal Grech describes this gathering as a profound “event of prayer and listening” that calls upon every baptized individual. He believes that every Catholic has a role to play in this global undertaking, that “all of us...are called at this time to unite in the comunion of prayer.” A series of special intercessions have been crafted for this occasion. They include:
For the Church, on the eve of a new phase in the synodal journey, that the presence of the Gospel, alive and at work in her, may make her like the vineyard in the parable, a vital place where all men and women who seek meaning in their life find a place, a word, and a breath of hope, we pray.
For the bishops and all the participants in the Synodal Assembly, that proposals may spring forth from their listening to the Holy Spirit, so that the entire People of God, in a dynamism of communion, may feel that they are truly participating in the life of the Church and be a living and attractive witness to the newness of the Gospel in the world, we pray. For theologians: may the gifts of wisdom and revelation accompany their contribution to the work of the Synodal Assembly, so that the gift of faith may become life in all God’s people, we pray.
For young people, seekers of truth and authentic witness, concreteness and spirituality; that, as a result of the synodal journey, they may feel increasingly involved in the Church’s life and mission in the midst of the challenges of today’s world, giving to so many, with the enthusiasm of their age, the hope that springs from an encounter with Jesus, we pray.
For us gathered here in communion with Christian communities throughout the world: that by tasting the goodness of the Lord that comes to each one in the body and blood of Jesus, we may receive from him a fresh view of our neighbor and be made witnesses to generosity in the world in which we live, we pray. Parish Social Ministry DRIVE-THROUGH HOLIDAY FOOD DROP MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 4:00 - 8:00 PM IN THE PARKING LOT BEHIND THE CHURCH God’s people of all ages are suffering in poverty right here in our neighborhood. They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. Good Samaritan House is hosting a “drive-through holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Monday, November 6th from 4:00 PM - 800 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. (You may also drop the items by our office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the weeks of November 6th and 13th.)

Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we provide non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2024.

High School Hosts Mock Admissions Event
T
he St. Mary’s High School Guidance Department recently hosted its annual Mock Admissions Event. Seven college representatives met with small groups of parents and students to reveal insider tips on the college admissions process. The event was a huge success because of the engagement of the St. Mary’s families and the enthusiasm of the admissions representatives. We are incredibly grateful for the representatives who joined us for Mock Admissions. We hope that our relationship with these colleges and numerous others will continue to grow as they recognize the exceptional achievements of the St. Mary’s High School community. This year’s representatives joining us were from Hofstra University, Iona University, Ithaca College, St. John’s University, Stonehill College, SUNY Albany, and the University of Scranton. For more information on our Guidance Department’s exceptional services, please get in touch with Mrs. Jessica Kemp, director of student services (jkemp@saintmaryhs.org).
