From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Master, I want to see.”
(Mark 10:51)
In our Gospel today, Jesus is about to enter into Jerusalem. It will be a time for us to witness His sufering, death, and resurrection. Te Word that Jesus preaches is the “utterance of the Father.” Tis Word has been seen through the incarnation of Jesus who is the Word made fesh. As the utterance of the Father, the Kingdom of God is ushered in through the ministry of Jesus. It is the kingdom we have been hearing about through Isaiah the prophet. Te mute will speak; the lame will walk; the deaf will hear; and those without hope will rejoice. Jeremiah reminds us today that though we may walk in tears, the Lord will console us and lead us to Him. Such a wonderful image to ponder in prayer!
On the road, Jesus encounters a man born blind. Bartimaeus has spent his life in darkness stumbling, groping, and relying on others for his existence. I am sure it was, at times, a lonely and isolated life. Maybe a life flled with longing and desire. I imagine that some of those longings were to see the sun that warmed his face during the day or to look into the eyes of someone he loved. Living in darkness certainly would have made his life much more difcult. Tere were none of the aids we have today for those without sight. So he hears that Jesus is near and realizes this was the one he knew could help him. He calls out to Jesus, but is hushed by the crowd. Te crowd is certainly blind in this instance. Maybe they thought they should not disturb the order and peace. Maybe they believed their responsibility was to simply remain silent and “respectful” and never to question. While certainly respect and order are wonderful qualities, is it ever the correct response when so great a need is present?
St. Mark is reminding his readers (and us) to be attentive to the cries of the needy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus’ cry and asks what he wants. Trowing aside his cloak, he runs to Jesus. He must have been overcome with a great, deep joy. Hope was in his midst. He places before the Lord his desire to see. And because of his faith, it is granted him. Can you imagine the incredulous joy that Bartimaeus must have felt at that moment? His eyesight is returned and now he becomes a follower of Jesus. Jesus cured Bartimaeus’ physical blindness but, more importantly, any doubts of who Jesus truly is, those spiritual blindnesses were cured also. Now Bartimaeus, who was in the darkness of the world, has seen light. Te light through his eyes, but more importantly, he has experienced the Light of God in Jesus. Tat light is his path to the eternal light of heaven. What a great day it was for him!
So now we bring the reading to our personal level. What is Jesus saying to us? We may not be physically blind, but are there spiritual blindnesses in our lives that keep us from “seeing” and recognizing Jesus in our midst? Bartimaeus has no possessions except his cloak. But even that he casts away to get up and come to Jesus. He is a powerful symbol for us. So we ask ourselves what do we need to “put aside” to get closer to Jesus? What needs to change and be redirected in our lives? Are there times, like the crowd in today’s Gospel, we were silent when we encountered injustice, when we needed to speak out? Is that silence done to keep the “peaceful order?” How shall I begin to change? What is the invitation Jesus is ofering us? Do we truly want to see His presence in our midst?
St. Augustine of Hippo puts this journey so beautifully and gives us the path to that freedom in God. “You called and shouted and burst my deafness. You fashed, shone, and scattered my blindness. You breathed odors, and I drew one breath and panted for You. You touched me, and I burned for Your peace.” Such wonderfully powerful words!
Our All Souls’ Day Novena begins on All Souls’ Day. What a great gift to assist our beloved dead in the nine days of Masses for their souls.
October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary. I encourage you to take the time to pray this wonderful and powerful prayer form, especially as a family.
In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob
J Stewards of God’s Gifts
In today’s Gospel, Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for help.

Laws and a Glimpse of Heaven
In the Old Testament, we read of God giving his laws to Moses. God invites Moses to lead his people out of bondage. Te name Moses foreshadows the glory that is to come as it means ““to pull out or draw out” [of water].” God reveals to a struggling Moses, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” It is through this encounter with God that Moses fnally understands his own identity, and place in the world. Like Moses, only in God can we truly fnd ourselves.
Grade six catechism centers on the teaching of God’s commandments. Catechist Mrs. Morrison tasked students to deliver a presentation on one of God’s laws. With fantastic creativity, students created a bowling game to name and knock down false idols. A fantastic and fun way to learn! And turning to frst graders, new Catechist Mrs. Toth shares the children’s unique vision of heaven. At the start of class, they asked “Is Jesus coming to our class today?” Mrs. Toth assured that Jesus is at every class, and always with us!
We give thanks to God from whom all goodness fows.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” And he answers, “Master, I want to see.” Let us ask Jesus for the grace to “see” our brothers and sisters who are poor and lonely. Tis month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy to our families, providing food and help with other expenses. God Bless You!
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
HOLY HOUR - Part One
Eucharistic Adoration is a continuation of the worship of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood outside the Holy Sacrifce of the Mass. It is an occasion of abundant grace and a special way of showing devotion to Him. A Holy Hour may be made at any time, but it is particularly fruitful when made regularly each day or week. Te following prayers are meant for use at an individual Holy Hour, to be prayed silently in the church. Tere is no single way to make a Holy Hour; this format is a suggestion to assist you in entering into a prayerful hour with Jesus.
Upon entering the Church, bless yourself with holy water as a reminder of Baptism, recalling that God has given you the gift of faith in him, hope in his promises, and love for him. Proceed into the main part of the Church and acknowledge Jesus in the Eucharist by genufecting – kneeling on the right knee – a sign of reverence. Te Sign of the Cross may be used to bless yourself.
+ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I will pause and consider that God our Lord beholds me in love, then make an act of reverence. (St. Ignatius Loyola)
Prayer Before the Blessed Sacrament
O Jesus, I adore thee who in thy love divine conceal thy mighty Godhead in forms of bread and wine. R. O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine!
O Jesus, I adore thee, our Victim and our Priest, whose precious blood and body become our sacred feast. R.
O Jesus, I adore thee, our Savior and our King, and with the saints and angels my humble homage bring. R.
O Jesus, I adore thee; come, live in me, I pray, that all my thoughts and actions be thine alone today. R.
O come, all you who labor in sorrow and in pain; come, eat this bread from heaven, your peace and strength regain. R.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
It is ftting to begin prayer by disposing yourself to receive the gift of prayer and invoking the Holy Spirit, for “we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (Romans 8:26)
Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy.
Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy.
Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. (St. Augustine)

SHARE CHRISTMAS
“Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble, the Lord delivers him.” Psalm 41:1
Tis is the 28th year that St. Mary’s Good Samaritan House will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. Tey are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.
We are ofering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to. Our ofce really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. Tis allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include:
Marshalls/TJ Maxx Raindew
American Express Visa
If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fll out the form below, and we will send you, by November 18th, a “Wish List” created by a specifc family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.
Gifts and gift cards can be dropped of to our ofce Mondays, Wednesdays, and Tursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Tey can also be dropped at the Parish Ofce during its normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name, “Share Christmas,” and your assigned family number. Please deliver all gifts by Tursday, December 5th.
As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.
Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Critical Ballot Amending NYS Constitution: Proposal 1 is A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
New York has a critical referendum on the ballot this November, “Proposal 1,” often called the “Equal Rights Amendment.” While that suggests a noble cause, Proposal 1 has dangerous consequences, and we are urged to vote No. Proposal 1 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing that could lead to darkness for many families, as it disregards the lives of unborn and struggling children in the name of political agendas.
• Proposal 1 is redundant in New York, which has already stripped away abortion limitations. It efectively legalizes abortion up to the moment of birth, and removes the people’s right to initiate any legislation protecting the child in the womb.
• Proposal 1’s inclusion of “age” as a protected class can eliminate parents’ authority over minor children’s destructive and permanent decisions they could later regret, such as so-called “gender afrming” treatments and surgeries. Te relationship between parents and their children is sacred; parents must be able to support and guide their children in accord with natural law.
