From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with your whole being and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39) We are all familiar with this, the greatest of the commandments. It has been taught to us since childhood. But if we take a moment and ponder these words, we realize how profound they really are. Two wondrous things should strike us. The first is that the commandment to love your neighbor as you love yourself and the commandment to love God are the greatest and foremost things that are contained in the entire Word of God. The second is that the greatest and most important thing you can do is to love God—love GOD—with all your heart and soul and mind. Everything else in the Bible, in some sense, depends on these two commandments: the commandment to love God and the commandment to love our neighbor. This is an amazing statement. We have the authority of the Son of God here telling us something beautiful about the origin and design of the entire plan and Word of God. It is an absolutely staggering commandment. If this is what it means, then something unbelievably powerful and earthshaking will have to happen in our souls. Something supernatural. Something well beyond what selfpreserving, self-enhancing, self-exalting, self-esteeming, self-advancing humans live by. Before we take up such a commandment and apply it to our lives, we need to ponder these two challenges that surround the commandment. That the commandment to love God is the greatest and foremost commandment in the Word of God and that all the Law and the Prophets depend on this. The love of God has to take hold of our hearts so that we can then begin to look at the world as God does. St. John tells us that God is love. To know and worship God, we have to grasp that love and its power in our own lives. Scripture reminds us of God’s care for us and of all human beings. In a very real sense, love is three-tiered. God, neighbor and self. When one of those falls short, the rest of the commandment collapses. So our lives should embrace a practice that keeps the entirety of this commandment alive and powerful in our hearts. Serving God must contain a desire to serve one another. To be concerned for the poor, the needy, the stranger in our midst, and for our own well-being. I dare say the latter can be, for some of us, the most difficult. Loving self can sometimes be interpreted as prideful behavior. While this can certainly be true, we are commanded to love and care for ourselves so we can truthfully serve God and His people. As we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints we look to these “heroes” as our role models. In the varied circumstances of their lives, the love of God flowed to the service of God’s people in a way of dying to self. BUT they served in love BECAUSE they knew they were loved by God. This was the way to their sainthood and should be the way to ours. What area of this great commandment do we need to develop more so that we can fulfill what we have been commanded to do? I want to thank all our catechists for their yes to service of the parish. This ministry of teaching and forming our young people in the faith is one of the most important within the life of the Church. This prepares our young people in their faith in Jesus and to one day take places of leadership. I also want to thank Mrs. Marie Granieri, who serves as the Director of Religious Education, for her dedicated and hard work. October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary. I encourage all to pray the Rosary daily. In Jesus and Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Fr. Bob

Parish Social Ministry DRIVE-THROUGH HOLIDAY FOOD DROP MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 4:00 - 8:00 PM IN THE PARKING LOT BEHIND THE CHURCH God’s people of all ages are suffering in poverty right here in our neighborhood. They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. Good Samaritan House is hosting a “drive-through holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Monday, November 6th from 4:00 PM - 800 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. (You may also drop the items by our office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the weeks of November 6th and 13th.)

The items we are collecting for this drive are:

Frozen Oven Stuffer Chickens* Frozen Turkeys (10-15 lbs. max) 3-8 Pound Bags of Potatoes Crescent Rolls or Biscuit Tubes Frozen Pies, Cakes, Cookies Cake, Muffin, or Brownie Mix Fresh Apples

Fresh Oranges Frozen Pounds of Butter Cans of Corn Cans of Carrots Cans of Beans Cans of Mixed Vegetables Quarts of Milk (no gallons)

*Stuffer chickens are preferred by some clients due to their size. No stuffing, gravy, canned yams, or cranberry sauce, please! Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we provide non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2024.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Acts of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to possess you within my soul. Since I am unable now to receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as being already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never, never permit me to be separated from you. - St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)

I believe that You, O Jesus, are in the most holy Sacrament. I love You and desire You. Come into my heart. I embrace You. Oh, never leave me. May the burning and most sweet power of your love, O Lord Jesus Christ, I beseech You, absorb my mind that I may die through love of Your love, who were graciously pleased to die through love of my love. - St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Hymns for Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration O saving Victim, open wide The gate of heav’n to us below, Our foes press on from ev’ry side; Your aid supply, your strength bestow. To your great name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Three; O grant us endless length of days In our true native land with thee. In Latin: O salutaris Hostia Quae caeli pandis ostium: Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna Gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria.

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation Do You Know Someone Who Would Like to Become Catholic? Do You Need to Complete Your Sacraments of Initiation? This year we have one candidate for the RCIA process. She is already negotiating the Missalette as she attends Sunday Mass and responding with enthusiasm to her weekly lessons on the teachings of the Church. The Sunday Program explains and reflects on the readings of the Mass of the day and at the same time she is learning about the Bible. Know anyone who would like to join her? There’s still plenty of room at the table. Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM and other times by appointment.

PRAYING THE

WITH FR

.

October is the month dedicated to the Rosary, and in our daily prayers at St. Mary’s, we pray for peace in these troubling times. With these thoughts in mind, our School Chaplain, Fr. Dominik visited us at the Elementary and Middle Schools to lead us in prayer. Students and faculty members joined in reciting the Most Holy Rosary in their groups. Additionally, Fr. Dom introduced our youngest learners to the Rosary beads and their significance in our Catholic faith while spending time in the Early Childhood classrooms. Thank you, Fr. Dominik, for elevating our experience of praying the Rosary as a school community!

Religious Education Dear St. Mary Religious Education Family, This week, students spent time outdoors reflecting on how the beauty of God’s world reflects his love and perfections. Catechists illuminated how faith is strengthened through prayer. In the upper grades, special time was dedicated in church to learn about the many appearances of the Blessed Mother throughout the world. Students learned about how she revealed herself as the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego at the top of Mexico’s Tepeyac Hill. They also intently listened to the miracle at Fatima with wonder and great love for the Mother of God. Our Lady has given us so many ways to know her and seek her help. To Jesus – through Mary. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Society of St. Vincent de Paul THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome! We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry. In the Gospel today Jesus says: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” When God is the center of our lives there is no problem with giving others their due. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you are helping your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless and frightened to know that they belong to God. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family. Interested? Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
