February 2017 Dear Parishioners, I am happy to present the Annual Report on Parish Life for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. On the following pages, you will see various income and expense figures, all of which reflect the remarkable generosity of the people of the Church of Saint Mary and the ministries we support. However, numbers alone do not tell the entire story. What you cannot see in the figures and pie charts is the commitment to compassion, community, and faith that is at the very core of the people of our parish. The photographs in this report are a wonderful display of this commitment but they merely touch upon the love in the hearts of each and every member of our vibrant community. Our ministries are plentiful, impactful, and emblematic of the call of Jesus Christ to love our neighbor as ourselves. My commitment as Pastor of the Parish is to every member of our community including our parishioners, students in Religious Education and Youth Ministry, those served by our social ministry, and the students and faculty of our schools. This collection of people is a singular group walking along the same path in our faith journey. Just as we are called to be one body in Christ so too are we, as a Church, one people in faith who support and minister to each other. As St. Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans, “so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. What a blessing for each of us to share our gifts in service and to nurture our mutual walk in Christ. As Pastor, I am deeply grateful to all of you who participate in and support our ministries and make up the Body of Christ which is the Church of Saint Mary. In Jesus and Mary,
Rev. Father Robert A. Romeo Pastor

DOLLARS AND CENTS: YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS AT WORK Each Sunday, the collection basket comes around once, maybe twice, and you generously make a contribution to the church and feel a sense of satisfaction that you have supported parish programs or a special appeal. Or maybe you made a contribution at a fundraising event, whether for the church or one of the schools, such as the Parish Gala, the Take-A-Break Dinner Dance or the Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic. You feel a sense of pride because you are supporting your child’s school or the church’s programs. St. Mary’s Parish, whether it is the church or The Schools of Saint Mary, values these contributions greatly and would not be able to offer the level of activities, ministries, school programs and other services without the generosity of parishioners, school parents, alumni, and our community of friends. Sunday and special Holy Day collections make up the bulk of the church’s operating revenue. Additional support comes from church fundraising events and special donations. These funds are used to pay for salaries of church staff, program expenses for Religious Education, Social Ministry, and the Liturgy. A portion of regular Sunday collections are allocated as a school subsidy as directed by the Diocese of Rockville Centre and comes from our regular Sunday collections. The subsidy is allocated to The Schools of Saint Mary as needed. Additionally, all churches are assessed for Diocesan administrative support. This assessment is a percentage of parish income. In return, the Diocese provides support services for the parish ministries and The Schools of Saint Mary. It also supports the missionary charitable works around the Diocese. Notably, 100% of all fundraising proceeds that result from special events held by The Schools are restricted to benefit the school that hosts the event. All gifts that are specifically designated to a church or school program are also restricted for use by that specific ministry or activity. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is a program run by the Diocese. Every parish is given an annual goal for this special offering. Most funds collected up to that goal are designated to Diocesan programs. Once the goal is reached, the designation is reversed and the parish receives a predominance of the funds contributed. Catholic Ministries is a very meaningful program and a wonderful way for church parishioners to support the community outside our local parish. Your generosity embodies the spirit of service and giving that is so fundamental to our faith. We thank you for your contributions, which are vital for supporting our parish programs, The Schools, and ministries, and enhancing the lives of all St. Mary’s parishioners.
SUSTAINING SAINT MARY’S THROUGH PLANNED GIVING Saint Mary’s Parish is not just a church. It is a spiritual home - a nurturing, supportive, Catholic community, and a loving, dedicated, second family. St. Mary’s is a place where our lives have been enriched by the sacraments and teachings of our faith. It is where we have raised our families and built lifelong memories alongside our fellow parishioners and clergy. It is the place where we celebrate life’s milestones and where we share the weight of loss. Giving thanks for the blessings we have received and sharing those gifts with others are two cornerstones of our faith. A meaningful way to give back to our parish is by making a planned gift to St. Mary’s as part of your estate planning. Planned giving encompasses all gifts made from assets accumulated during one’s lifetime. These gifts help the parish meet the needs of our community now and in the future. PLANNED GIFTS ARE USUALLY ONE OF THESE TYPES: WILLS AND BEQUESTS: The parish or ministry within the parish is named as a beneficiary in one’s last will and testament or living trust. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES: A gift of cash or stock is made to an annuity program and the donor receives guaranteed payments for life. At passing, the remainder is a gift to the parish. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST: Cash, stock, real estate or anything else of value is transferred to the trust. The donor receives income for life and the remaining assets are left as a bequest to the church at passing. GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE: The parish is designated as a beneficiary of one’s life insurance policy. GIFTS OF RETIREMENT ASSETS: The parish is designated as the beneficiary of one’s Individual Retirement Account. All planned gift donors receive the distinction of membership in the Patronus Society of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The Diocese has dedicated staff to assist you with planned giving, or you can contact your estate planning attorney for further information. We hope you will consider making a planned gift to St. Mary’s Parish, which will greatly enhance our ability to provide wonderful programs for our parishioners in years to come.
