A Letter from Fr. Eddy

Dear Parishioners,

In the last four weeks we have come to know about Kate Bowler, and the fact that she is, even now, suffering from colon cancer diagnosed at stage four. Perhaps, the most remarkable thing about the story from her book: Everything Happens for a Reason (New York: Random House, 2018), is the ordinariness of her life, and the transparent way in which she is undergoing her ordeal. We have walked with her as companions along the way of suffering, knowing that we are no better or different. It is Kate today, but it could be anyone else tomorrow. Brothers and Sisters, we are contingent (dependent) beings in the hands of God, so to speak, and whatever happens in our lives is already accounted for in God, who is All-Good, All-Powerful, and All-Knowing. This is my short answer to the question that Kate raises, whether everything really happens for a reason.

Permit me, in concluding this discourse, to share a personal story. Perhaps I should first say that for the first fiftyfour years of my life, I was never so sick as to stay overnight in a hospital. But everything changed thereafter; and my health took a downward turn. Just over five years ago, I found myself increasingly straining to pass urine, and each time I had the urge I could not manage to void my bladder completely. The urge was so frequent that in one nighttime period I was forced to wake up as many as six times to do this painful ritual! I consulted urologists at one of the fancier specialist diagnostic hospitals where I live, they did a biopsy, and diagnosed what they called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). In layman’s language, this is an Enlarged Prostate gland. Thank God, their laboratory results showed it was not cancerous! But the prescribed medications that I took daily afforded me only temporary relief, and saved me the embarrassment of frequently needing and requesting to pass urine in peoples’ homes when I was not at home. Like Kate, the first thing out the window of my life was my pride, because this humbled me. It truly did!

Things came to a head one Christmas week in 2017 when I travelled to my village to be with my family members as I usually did. The Christmas cheer and the joy of being home among my people; the eating and drinking and entertainment was cut short later that night when I could not pass urine. My bladder was full, my abdomen distended, and I could neither lie nor sit down. Early in the morning I scrambled a driver to take me to the nearest government hospital, about two hours’ journey away. The doctor on call tried to insert a catheter through my urethra, but failed due to the enlargement of the prostate gland. He resorted in the end to inserting a syringe directly through my abdomen and into the bladder to extract urine. As he repeated this a few times, I felt immediate relief, and for the first time that morning I could sit down. In the ensuing discussion, he suggested I find a surgeon who could undertake a surgical procedure to emplace a Supra-pubic catheter, somewhere south of my belly-button, to enable me to pass urine in the meantime, before a more permanent solution is found.

To cut a long story short, I approached a physician in a roadside ‘Medical Center’ near my village and he assured me he could undertake this procedure. Later that night, I came back to the place and the doctor led me into his ramshackle ‘theater’ where I got ready for surgery. He had no electricity, so he proceeded to do this procedure with one of his nurses lighting up with her mobile phone! This should have been a warning sign for me, but it didn’t record immediately because of my desperate straits. Obviously, the local anesthesia he administered did not work, because I was feeling excruciating pain with his every touch and cut. At some point, he administered general anesthesia, and put me to sleep without prior information. I could have choked in my sleep, because I had been eating and drinking just before I came in for the procedure! I cannot say how long I was sedated, but when eventually I came back to consciousness, I was lying alone in the dark room disoriented, and couldn’t quite recognize or remember where I was.

When eventually the doctor walked in, he gave me some really horrific news. He said the scalpel (surgical blade) he was using had detached from its handle and disappeared into my bladder during the procedure! Please, do not ask me how this is possible, but it happened to me! There I was with a perforated bladder, and a knife lodged in it! Now what! Thank God, he was honest enough to admit that he lacked the capacity to do anything further. I had to be rushed as a matter of emergency, to a tertiary hospital in the nearest city, three hours’ journey away, in the middle of the night for yet another surgery. This second surgery in 24 hours was to retrieve the surgical knife, and then to emplace a Suprapubic catheter to enable me to void my bladder as, and when, needed. Remember that this was what brought me to this roadside clinic in the first place. Yes, I had this scalpel lodged in my bladder for nearly twenty hours before it was

A Letter from Fr. Eddy

extracted, and the surgery was completed. My original problem; however, remained unresolved since the prostrate was still enlarged. The ordeal ended when my Superior arranged for me to travel to the USA, specifically to Houston, Texas, in March 2018, for the appropriate surgery to address the problem. I am glad to say I have been well since! For reasons such as this, the USA has many friends in Nigeria, in particular, and Africa in general. So, I am one of those who often yell in excitement: USA! USA!! USA!!!

Now, to conclude our discourse on the story of Kate Bowler, let us pose the question one more time: Does everything happen for a reason? At this point we must rehash the perennial Problem of Evil: Why does evil (including suffering, pain, disease, and death) exist in the world when there is a God who is All-Good, All-Powerful, and All-Knowing? Of course, one paragraph in a parish bulletin cannot even begin to address this age-old problem of mankind. Suffice it to say; however, that for God to be God, He must possess the following attributes in the least. Firstly, He must be All-Good (Omnibenevolent), because it was out of pure and selfless love that He created the universe. Thus, He cannot will evil for His creation, since He is All-good to His creatures. If evil occurs, as it often does, it is not because He has positively willed it, but He allows it as part of the immensity of His will, and the Freedom that is at the core of this Divine Will. His infinite goodness perfectly supplies and sustains all there is, to an infinite degree. Secondly, God must be All-Powerful (Omnipotent), because if we accept that nothing preceded God, and that He created everything ex nihilo (from nothing) in the beginning, then there can be nothing from which God gets power. The implication of this is that all power belongs to God, and He ‘rations’ it to whom He chooses, as He chooses. It would be illogical and impossible for Him to ration more power to an aspect of His creation than He has in Himself. Being All-Powerful; therefore, He can call forth everything, and also suppress everything, including evil, if He wants to. But He does not actively do so since He is not in competition or power contest, as it were, with any other power whatsoever, not even with the power of evil. Thirdly, God must be All-Knowing (Omniscient), because He holds all creation in contingency, and no part of this immensity is implicated, impacted, or affected in any way that He does not actively know about. In fact, not to know or to have any admixture of ignorance disqualifies Him as God. Why? Because that would mean that He can neither be All-Powerful or All-Good. It is actually His infinite knowledge that enables Him to exercise His infinite power and infinite goodness.

So, to answer the question whether everything happens for a reason, we consider that everything happens in a universe created and maintained by God, and nothing escapes Him. St. Paul was overwhelmed with the realization of God’s internal cohesion when he wrote of God’s mercy and wisdom as follows,

“How rich are the depths of God – how deep his wisdom and knowledge – and how impossible to penetrate his motives or understand his methods! All that exists comes from him; all is by him and for him. To him be glory forever! Amen” (Romans 11:33-36).

So, what happened to me, what is happening to Kate Bowler, and everything that has ever happened to anyone that we know, is accounted for in the immensity of God. Everything is; therefore, subsumed in God and accounted for Through Him, With Him, and In Him (Great Doxology at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer)! May the infinite God bless and preserve each and all. Amen!

P.S. Many thanks to all who sent me feedback during these Letters. I hope we can keep this conversation alive on my official email, above. Thanks, again!

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta

Building a Solid Foundation for the Upcoming School Year: Employing the Grace of God

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

This summer was so short, but, for many, each day could be long especially for those who have children who did not go to an organized camp. Parents had to drive their children to places to see friends or do activities. So many extra jobs were added to parents’ already busy schedules. So, as you see, summertime when the living is easy was turned into an ever-moving schedule of activities and responsibilities. Now you are preparing for the school year. I hear parents say, “They are happy that the children, no matter what the age, are going back to school.” I got it!

Well, I hope you enjoyed the warm air and the relaxing times that were to be had at different intervals. In many ways, life is just moments to contemplate, enjoy, work through, and reflect upon.

How do you organize yourself and your children to have an orderly school year? Order and setting a routine are the basis of success. Through establishing order, each person in a family system knows what their specific responsibilities are to themselves and to the working of the family. Remember: misbehaving children and teens are looking for attention and significance. Everyone wants to feel they count and that their thoughts and feelings are heard.

I suggest that parents talk with each other about the coming school year. What do you expect from

each other in terms of managing the many responsibilities for each of the children? Once you have come to terms with responsibilities the parents will have, the next step is to state the expectations that the school and home will place on your children no matter what the age. This also applies to college students who are living at home.

Parents need to identify their expectations for their children. Also, ask the children what they expect from themselves in terms of negotiating and working through the many responsibilities of the school year. I would suggest these be written down by parents and children. It is important to have a record or contract of what was decided upon. This way, your children can’t say they didn’t realize what they had to do.

Once you have discussed expectations of the new school year, it is a worthwhile exercise for your children to review the past year. You have hopes and aspirations that whatever was problematic for them in the past year will be a thing of the past. How can you set up the coming year to address the challenges that lie ahead as they forge further into their academic education and grow in the grace of God giving them the ability to manage their emotional reactions to the things they struggle with?

Was it a certain subject that gave you difficulty last year? Did you have trouble organizing your time so you could finish your schoolwork and partake in other activities? Did you not have the energy to accomplish all that you set out to do? Do you need help with certain subjects? Have you been able to identify extracurricular activities that you want to participate in? Are you having trouble making or keeping friends? Are your expectations realistic?

Church of Saint Mary | 10

Sorry for all the questions, but I know many students and their parents have some of these concerns. So where do you start? First, try to identify what went wrong in the past in the areas that you are having trouble with. If it was a particular subject: Did you understand the classwork? Were you distracted in class? Did you do your assignments fully? Did you study for tests? If you studied and did not understand the subject matter, did you reach out for help? Ask yourself, or parents, ask your child, and see if you can identify the patterns that did not work for you. If you can do that, you will know what needs to be changed.

Friendships and relating is an essential part of the school experience. Did you feel accepted and liked by your peers? If not, do you know why? What was your part in creating the problems with friends? That doesn’t mean that you started or created them. Many times, it means that you put up with being bullied, made fun of, or not included. These are tough feelings and facts to realize. If you can address these issues, you can set yourself on another path and be free of patterns that keep you stuck.

Do you become overwhelmed with anxiety or anger when feeling frustrated about your schoolwork, sports, and other extracurricular activities (performing: dance, singing, theatre, writing for publications, etc.)?

In considering all these questions and areas of concern, this is where your relationship with God can become very useful for you. Pray to God for peace and guidance in the ability to face your behaviors and feelings. God bestows upon us HIS grace just for the asking through prayer. Prayer also enables you to calm your mind and face your feelings and change your actions.

September 15th - Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. On this day, our Church calls attention to Our Blessed Mother’s sufferings to remind us of the pain and sadness Mary suffered in her earthly life. Much the same as the Church commemorates Jesus’ passion and death on Good Friday, a reflection on Our Lady’s sufferings will draw us nearer to our own salvation. We have an opportunity to ask Mary to help us through our own trials.

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta (con’t.)

Parents: Now what I want you to do is make a list of all the questions I put forth in this article and each night spend time with your children individually to explore the answers to the questions. Also, before you start the discussion, say a prayer for guidance for you and your children. Below is a prayer you can say or choose whatever prayer you want. What is most important is that you pray and talk together. Doing this, matters can be resolved with calm and understanding. Also, emotional, and academic growth can be achieved. The

best of luck for all your efforts this year.

If you find that you are stuck in one or many areas, consult with a psychologist to help explore the many options that are available to you and your children to find solutions and feel more empowered and able to attain success.

Lord, give me the strength to follow your word in all that I do in the coming school year. May I be blessed by your grace to be persistent in all my efforts to do the best I can do. Also, if I need help, please give me the strength to ask for it.

Dr. Pitta is a Clinical and Family Psychologist practicing in Manhasset and is the chair of the Mental Health Ministry of St. Mary’s. What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “…where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we help them to know that indeed “God is in the midst of them.”

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Prayers at Adoration

Heavenly Father, we come before you today, in Your house, to worship, honor and to thank you for your Son and everything we that you have given us and the lives that we enjoy. We are especially thankful for our families, friends and community, Father God.

I adore you, O Infinite Goodness, who has wrought so many miracles, in order to reveal your love to us. I adore you, with all the angels and saints, and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of your Father and are all aglow with burning love for you. I adore you with all your friends, O Jesus!

Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:3)

Dear Lord,

I adore you because you are great, and greatly to be praised! (Psalm 145:3) All I have to do is look around to see your greatness displayed. Creation shows me your wonderful work, your power and beauty in all things. Romans 11:36 reminds me of this, “For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever!”

When I slow down from the busyness of life, I notice you more. I hear you in the birds singing and sense your presence in the gentle wind. I get a glimpse of your goodness in the miracle of new life. The morning sunrise reminds me of your mercies that begin fresh every morning (Lamentations 3:22). As I go about my day, I will admire how great you are by pausing to enjoy what you created. In the holy name of your son Jesus I pray, Amen.
