A Refection by Father Raphael

REFLECTION FOR THE 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B THEME: JESUS THE SUFFERING SERVANT – WE SUFFER TO GAIN

Te frst reading is from the Tird Servant Song of Isaiah (Isaiah 50:5-9). It describes the sufering which the servant is called to endure. Te third reading from the Gospel according St. Mark 8:27-35 is about Peter’s profession of faith and Jesus speaking of his impending passion and death. In the second reading, the letter of St. James (James 2:14-18) sheds light on the relationship between faith and good works.

Te text in the frst reading could be divided into two parts: verses 5-6 describe the type of sufering the prophet has to undergo and verses 7-9 describe his confdence in the Lord who vindicates him. So let us look quickly at the two parts.

Te frst type of the oppression he sufers is what he hears. It refers to insults and threats. He could hear the threats about himself which were from afar. Te second threat is that which he sees. He does not hide his face from it. Tat which he hears comes from afar and he might not be able to recognize the enemy. But that which he sees, is pretty close. Te threat is increasing. He probably cannot just hear the rumors; he can see the expression of anger on the faces of the adversaries. If rumors can be dismissed, what he sees with his own eyes cannot be easily forgotten.

In verse 6, the game changes. Te threat has moved from hearing and seeing to the expression of hostility. Now it has become physical. Te enemy is close enough to touch him with his hand, to strike him on the check and on the back, pull his beard, and spit on his face. Tis action is not just about how hostile his enemy has become, but also how emboldened he is. Ten in verse 7 the prophet begins his defance. He dares the adversary to face him squarely, to advance, and to come near him. He is sure that the Lord will be his defense. If the Lord is on his side, who will declare him guilty? (verse 9)

Te Gospel reading concerns the profession of faith by Peter in Caesarea Philippi. Tis account has three elements. First, the question of who Jesus is and Peter’s declaration of the Christ; second, the challenge of Peter and the rebuke; and third, the teaching about discipleship and the cross. Note that in this Gospel, after Peter’s proclamation, Jesus does not declare that his Father has revealed it to Peter (that is in Matthew’s Gospel). Rather the disciples are asked not to tell anyone. What Jesus notices is the danger of the enemy (adversary) within, similar to the frst reading, and he rebukes Peter. After that account, Jesus gathers, not just the disciples, but even the multitude and reiterates the true teaching. Te key message of the cross is sufering through persecution. It is only by accepting the sufering of Christ, and following him, that discipleship is complete.

Dear brothers and sisters, today’s liturgy reminds us that the name “Christian” confgures us to Jesus Christ. Terefore, the pursuit of the Christian life is certain to entail hardship and sacrifce if it is taken seriously. For example, James speaks of faith’s call to action, especially in the service of others. We cannot look at the poor and simply wish them well, but to sacrifce and doing something more. Looking at the prophets of old, their faith lived in action. Our Christian faith is a challenge, because it is intrinsically connected with our life journey. Tough we shall go through sufering, we shall not be put to shame because the Lord is our helper. Unlike Peter who did not want Jesus to go through sufering, the reason for which he was rebuked, we should embrace sufering like the cross. Paul says: For I consider that the suferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18). Persecutions and suferings may come our way, but they are temporary; the glory is eternal. So let us be still trusting the Lord to fght our battle for us. (cf. Exodus 14:14).

Stay blessed!

Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

On September 15th, the Catholic Church observes the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (not this year, due to the priority of Sunday). Our Church calls attention to Our Blessed Mother’s suferings to remind us of the pain and sadness Mary sufered in her earthly life. Te story of Mary’s sorrows is the story of her love, faith, and trust in God as well as obedience to God’s perfect will. It reminds us of her perseverance, patience, and humility. Much the same as the Church “commemorates” Jesus’ passion and death on Good Friday, a refection on Our Lady’s suferings will draw us nearer to our own salvation. Tis day ofers us an opportunity to ask Mary, in a special way, to help us through our own trials.

Te Rangers held their frst meeting with several new recruits. Te ladies prepared a shipment of 720 Rosaries while the new recruits learned how to make them. Te total number of Rosaries made by St. Mary’s parishioners and shipped to date is 21,897!

Te Rangers will meet again on Wednesday, October 2nd, at 10:00 AM in the Library.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.

The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.

In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.

ALL FUNDS RAISED BY OUR TEAM THROUGH THIS EVENT WILL REMAIN WITH OUR ST. Critical Ballot Amending NYS Constitution: Proposal 1 is A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Pope Francis has reminded us that as thoughtful Catholics, we must participate in the public square for the sake of the common good. We are called to properly inform our consciences, voting for candidates and policies that will best advance the natural law, the protection of human rights, the dignity of the human person, the sacredness of all life, and the teachings of Christ and His Church. New York has a critical referendum on the ballot this November, “Proposal 1,” often called the “Equal Rights Amendment.” While that suggests a noble cause, Proposal 1 has dangerous consequences, and we are urged to vote No. Proposal 1 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing that could lead to darkness for many families, as it disregards the lives of unborn and struggling children in the name of political agendas.

• Proposal 1 is redundant in New York, which has already stripped away abortion limitations. It efectively legalizes abortion up to the moment of birth, and removes the people’s right to initiate any legislation protecting the child in the womb.

• Proposal 1’s inclusion of “age” as a protected class can eliminate parents’ authority over minor children’s destructive and permanent decisions they could later regret, such as so-called “gender afrming” treatments and surgeries. Te relationship between parents and their children is sacred; parents must be able to support and guide their children in accord with natural law.

Faithful Catholics should consider these consequences and vote no.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In today’s Gospel Jesus says “If a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and follow in my steps.” Te cross of Jesus and the crosses of his members can evangelize us: the sick, who bear illness with courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the dying, who clearly trust in the resurrection; the sufering of our poor brothers and sisters who are hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s love. Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul…we want to help!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

How to Pray During Eucharistic Adoration

Tere is no wrong way to pray during adoration! You can talk to God about your personal intentions, seek spiritual guidance, or simply ofer thanksgiving and adoration to God. It’s a great time to practice Lectio Divina, prepare for the upcoming Sunday by reading the Gospel ahead of time, or meditating on the Rosary. Even just sitting in silence and allowing for God’s presence to wash over you is an appropriate way to spend time in adoration!

Hymn for Exposition

After the priest begins with the opening prayers, he will sing

O Saving Victim, either in Latin or English:

Latin: O salutaris Hostia Quae caeli pandis ostium; Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxillium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen

English: O saving Victim, open wide. Te gate of heaven to us below. Our foes press on from every side; Your aid supply, your strength bestow. To your great name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Tree; O grant us endless length of days in our true native land with thee. Amen.

Hymn for Benediction

Have a Successful School Year: with God in Your Heart and Mind

(For Parents Only)

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8)

Yes, we are at the beginning of another school year. Tere is relief felt by many parents to have an organized schedule and set expectations. While for other parents, the dread of facing another school year with the many challenges of children/teens needing to do what they are supposed to is again much uncertainty and fear for what may happen. Parents wait patiently for the frst marking period to end, usually before Tanksgiving, to learn how their child/teen has adjusted.

Te Good News is that you don’t have to wait to hear from the school, you can set your positive foundation built on 5 factors (a commitment to create realistic expectations, to defne steps on how to reach stated expectations, to keep anxiety within a working level, to show gratitude with prayer and to celebrate each step achieved towards stated goals). to ensure that you are setting up healthy expectations and a positive work and behavioral plan. So let me repeat the steps:

1. Commit to creating realistic expectations.

2. Defne steps on how to reach the expectations.

3. Keep anxiety within healthy working levels.

4. Show gratitude with prayer.

5. Celebrate each step achieved.

Let’s start our discussion simply with

a young child as our example. A goal is for your child to get to bed on time. Tere are many steps before that need to be achieved: Set the goal: My child must be to sleep by 7:30. So how do you reach that goal? For a child to be sleeping by 7:30 PM, the process begins when he/she comes home from school or activities. Have dinner at 5:00 or 5:30 PM at the latest. Do homework before dinner. Parents have dinner cooked before the child gets home. 5:00 PM is the most challenging time of the day. Children are hungry and want to eat. If the food is not ready, they start to act out. Tey want to watch TV or play with electronic devices. NO electronic devices 2 hours before going to sleep. Parents want peace so they can prepare dinner and let the children go on devices. Ten you have a battle to get them of the devices.

Start each dinner with a prayer thanking God for the gift of the meal and say one good thing that happened that day and one thing that maybe bothered you (if the child has nothing in this category, that is fne). Ten as a family say, “You are grateful for your parents and if there are siblings and whoever else is present.” By this prayer, you are teaching your child to express gratitude and get in touch with the love of God. Ten have the child talk about what they achieved or worked on in school or at home that day. Be sure to be attentive and not on your phones and reinforce and attend to what your child is saying. Parents also partake in this conversation by answering the questions you ask the children. Tis is a means of celebrating your child and his/her eforts as well as yourselves.

Teens have more demanding schedules with sports and other activities so that they don’t arrive home till 6:00 PM. Many families do not have family

dinner. If you can have that special time each day, usually by 7:00 PM, try to make it happen. In my household, we had family dinner at 7:15 each night. My teens got home around 6 and started their homework and then we all were available for dinner at 7:15. If your teen is hungry, have a snack they can eat that will hold them over till 7 or so. Take that time to talk about what happened during the day. Do not accept nothing, or “it was good.” Ask what was something good? What was a challenge? Also, parents talk about your day in the same way. You can set the example. You can tell funny stories, too. Also, ask about if they need your help with anything that evening. Talk about weekend plans, Say a prayer for gifts of the day and of life.

When you get in touch with God, you are connecting to the love of God. When I think about God, I think about loving in a disciplined way. So, if we set up our life and home with discipline, each member will know what is expected of them. Each member will know the steps on how to achieve their goals.

Having conversations about setting up the home in an orderly manner is essential. Without the proper foundation, order cannot be achieved. If there are boundaries set, each person knows what is required and anxiety will be lower because expectations and steps to achieve goals are stated. Also, practicing mindfulness will help if you are feeling overwhelmed. Take a deep breath and envision the love of God (for children, get what their image of love looks like and use that). You can also say a prayer together when you are feeling overwhelmed. You can create your own mindfulness exercise. (continued on the next page -->)

Dr. Patricia Pitta (con’t.)

Here is one I use. Take a deep breath and hold it for a moment. When taking a breath envision the warmth and love of God embracing you. Talk with your child or teen about what they can envision that will calm them down. Te point is to just do it! Eventually you will just be able to stay calm and the feeling and vision will help you take a rest and regroup your reactions and feelings.

I want you to think about: How do you want to organize your home and your child/teen’s schedule and responsibilities? Te parent sets the mood and tempo of the family, creating order. Te child takes the directions and dances to the tune created. Set a positive, disciplined, and loving tune and a orderly dance will follow. Below is a prayer you can say with your child/ teen, when you need to get back on track with less anxiety and to help with accomplishing your goals.

Prayer: Take a deep breath and say, “Tank you Jesus for all the gifts you have given me today (you can name them). I appreciate your love and I will love myself so I may reach the goals I have set under your direction. I love myself, my family, (can say school or teacher if appropriate) and all that I have. Amen.”

“There can be no Eucharist without the priesthood, just as there can be no priesthood without the Eucharist.” - Pope St. John Paul II

Dear Friends:

Please accept my deepest thanks for your prayers and continued financial support for our senior priests residing at St. Pius X Residence.

It is through the Eucharist and the priesthood that Jesus shares His love for us. Through the hands of the priest, the very presence of Jesus Christ is mediated to all people.

As we offer thanks to God for the gift of the priesthood in our Diocese, and as we pray together for a rich harvest of vocations to the priesthood on Long Island, we have a critical role to play in the life of our priests, including our senior priests.

Many of our senior priests live independently in parishes or their own homes, but there is a group of priests that require assistance with their daily living or a safe place to recover from an injury or illness. For these priests, and with your support, the Diocese of Rockville Centre founded the St Pius X Residence.

St. Pius X Residence cares for our senior priests in a setting that allows them to keep the Eucharist as the center of their lives, while accessing a wide array of medical and social opportunities.

This month you will have the opportunity to express your gratitude to our priests and celebrate their presence among us through your gift to the annual St. Pius X Residence Fund. Your gifts and prayers will ensure that our retired priests are properly cared for today and long into the future.

With my prayers and gratitude.

Sincerely in Christ,
