Dear Parishioners, “How often must I forgive?” (Matthew 18:21)

The question St. Peter presents to Jesus is one I am sure we all have had to contemplate. When another person has hurt us, especially someone close to us, we may struggle to know if there should be a time when enough is enough. The readings today help to set up our understanding of the power of forgiveness in our lives and how that forgiveness must be lived out. Psychology and our human wisdom already teach that we are not to harbor grievances: the prophets of the past and present have recommended the wisdom of renouncing the evils of resentment and anger. Sirach calls them, “hateful things.” But in this reading, notice that its argument to forgive does not appeal to human wisdom, but to our experience of God. The last line of the passage is the clue, “remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.” That seems to sum it up. The reason and the power to forgive come from what God has done first for us. He has established a covenant with us. That covenant demands from us a response to God’s commands. To live as members of God’s holy people, we must take seriously how the Lord teaches us to respond to those around us. Certainly, at times, it can be a struggle and a difficult one at that! There are people who have and may continue to hurt us by their actions. Those actions may seem to suck the life out of us, and maybe they do. So the question to ask is why forgive?

If we reflect on what God has done for us, it may help us to comprehend the response we are to give back to Him. He has certainly freed us from the debts we hold against others. So, hopefully, being changed by the forgiveness that is always available to us, can renew us and enable us to forgive. Some areas for reflection: What experience have we had when we got something we didn’t earn, absolutely free? Has anyone ever done a good deed for us that we didn’t deserve, didn’t even ask for? What did those experiences do for us? Did they change us? Were we somehow different because of what we received? Those experiences might give us some insight into the unmerited gift offered the servant in the Gospel. Too bad he didn’t let the forgiveness enter and change his heart to make him forgiving towards his fellow servant.

To put it simply - God makes the first move towards us through His grace. We can’t do a thing about forgiving injustices against us until we have received the gift, unwrapped it, and lived in it. We know that it is wise not to harbor grievances. St. John Paul the Great says that “Forgiveness is, above all, a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against the natural instinct to pay back evil with evil.” There are numerous examples of how a lack of forgiveness can eat away at our lives. I remember visiting an older woman who was battling cancer in a hospital. Thirty years ago, her husband divorced her and she had harbored resentment and anger ever since. Because she had been obsessed by this past wrong and had not been able to let it go, it affected her relationship with her children and grandchildren. She had held him bound, but she has also been held bound. The power she thought she had over him, by not forgiving, has stolen her life, robbed her of the deeper appreciation of family, friends, and life’s daily gifts.

How different would the steward’s life have been if he had just given what he had received! The power of God’s call to be forgiven and TO FORGIVE is life-giving and freeing. Is there anyone in your life that needs your forgiveness..not so much for them..but for you? In the end, Jesus tells us, it will be how we are judged.

Last Saturday, the Schools of St. Mary had a family day. It began with Mass at 5 PM and moved to Denihan Field where games and a bar-b-que were provided. I want to thank Kiera Walsh and all who worked with her for such a successful event.

In Jesus, Fr. Bob

15th ANNUAL

SVDPLI

TOGETHER WE GO FAR 2023

On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford.

The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Parish Outreach in serving families in the neighborhood.

In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.

All funds raised through this event remain with our St. Mary’s Conference to help our neighbors in need, regardless of their religious denomination. This is the only fundraiser for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. We would be so grateful if you would consider donating so that we can continue to help our neighbors in need.

Donations can be made in several ways: 3

Online with a credit card at: https://tinyurl.com/svdp11030 1 2 4

Please click on the “CHOOSE CONFERENCE” button under Donation Recipient to select “St. Mary’s Conference - Manhasset” to donate to us. You can either enter “Manhasset” in the search bar or scroll to St. Mary’s Conference in the list to make your selection.

Use the blue envelopes available in the vestibules of the Church, and drop your contribution at the Parish Office. If you are using a check, please make the check payable to “St. Vincent de Paul Manhasset.”

Mail a donation to: St. Mary’s SVDP Conference, c/o Church of St. Mary, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030. Please make the check payable to “St. Vincent De Paul Manhasset.”

Scan the QR Code to go directly to the donation page and follow the steps listed under #1 above.

Thanks again for your consideration.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Things to Do During Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic adoration is the act of worshipping God as He is present in the consecrated Eucharist. There are four kinds of prayer most appropriate in the presence of the Eucharist, namely adoration and praise, thanksgiving, repentance, and trusting intercession. Here are suggestions what to do during private Eucharistic adoration.

1. PRAY THE PSALMS OR THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS

Whether you are praising, giving thanks, asking for forgiveness, or seeking an answer, you’ll find an appropriate psalm. The ancient prayer of the Church called the Liturgy of the Hours presents an excellent way to pray through the Book of Psalms throughout the year.

2. RECITE THE “JESUS PRAYER”

Say “Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner”, repeatedly as you quiet your heart and mind.

3. MEDITATE USING SCRIPTURE

Choose a passage from the Bible. Read the words and ask God to let the passage speak to you. Pay special attention to anything that strikes you and ask God what He wishes for you to draw from that passage.

4. READ THE LIFE OF A SAINT AND PRAY WITH HIM OR HER

Most holy men and women have a great devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist. Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Peter Julian Eymard, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Baroness Catherine de Hueck are just a few. Read about them and pray their prayers before the Blessed Sacrament.

5. POUR OUT YOUR HEART TO CHRIST AND ADORE HIM

Speak to Jesus, aware that you are in His presence, and tell Him all that comes to your mind. Listen for His response. Pray the prayer that St Francis instructed his brothers to pray whenever they were before the Blessed Sacrament: “I adore you, O Christ, present here and in all the churches of the world, for by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.”

6. ASK FOR FORGIVENESS AND INTERCEDE FOR OTHERS

Think of those who have hurt you and request a special blessing for them. Ask God to forgive you for all the times you have neglected or hurt someone else. Bring before the Blessed Sacrament all those who have asked you to pray for them. Ask the Lord to address their concerns.

7. PRAY THE ROSARY

Pope St. John Paul II reminds us, “...is not the enraptured gaze of Mary as she contemplated the face of the newborn Christ and cradled him in her arms that unparalleled model of love which should inspire us every time we receive Eucharistic Communion?” (The Church and the Eucharist, 55) Ask Mary to join you as you gaze on Christ in the Eucharist and as you pray the Rosary.

8. SIT QUIETLY AND JUST “BE” IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD

Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Sit quietly and enjoy being in each other’s company. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

It’s one thing to say who you are.

It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.

Become a Knights of Columbus family.
