A Refection by Father Raphael
REFLECTION FOR THE 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
THEME: A CALL TO BE IN RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND OF NEIGHBOR
Our frst reading is from Deuteronomy (Dt.) 4:1-2, 6-8. Te context is Moses giving his last instructions to the people of Israel even as they prepare to enter into the land of Canaan. Tis means that the promulgation of the law is being done in a foreign country, in the land of Moab. Israel must neither add anything to nor take anything away from the law. It should not be changed at will. To add to the law makes it burdensome and to subtract from it makes it incomplete. Terefore, it must not be changed since it is also a universal law of Israel. Moreover, it does not apply only when one lives in Israel. Note that if the law is binding even outside Israel, how much more within Israel?
Another point and, perhaps, the focus of the reading is that the law will demonstrate that Israel is wise as a nation. Te nations give the frst reason for which Israel will be considered as a wise nation. “For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?” (Dt. 4:7). So, the frst reason is that Israel has God close to her and has an arrangement such that God is able to hear her anytime she calls (religious uprightness).
Now, that is not all. In Dt. 4:8, there is the second reason for which people will say Israel is wise. It says, “And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous (moral / human uprightness) as all this law which I set before you this day?” (Dt. 4:8). Terefore, two things indicate wisdom: concern for the things of God and concern for neighbor. Tese two must never be separated.
Te Gospel reading taken from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 is a critique of the tradition of the Jews. Te reading begins by saying that the scribes and the Pharisees have come from Jerusalem (the temple). Tey are those whose uppermost concern is about the temple (things of God). Te second thing is the use of the word marketplace. It is a place of civil life, as distinct from the temple which is the place of religious life. When the scribes and the Pharisees return from the marketplace, they wash their hands, naturally not only to not incur contamination, but also wash their hands of of the reality of what happens in the lives of ordinary people. Tey are no longer in touch with reality.
Te list of the vices which defle man, in verses 20-21, have a peculiar characteristic. All of them are linked to the second part of the Decalogue: “adultery, deceit, theft, fornication, murder, coveting, wickedness, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they “defle a man.” Terefore, injustice towards neighbor is more dangerous in defling a person than those that the scribes and the Pharisees are worried about.
In conclusion, to focus on or love the things of God (temple) is as good as justice towards one’s neighbor (market place). Terefore, wisdom is right relations with God, but even more importantly, right relations with neighbor. Tis is a balanced approach to the law because the law requires a balanced outlook. Law also gives direction to life and certainty of God’s will, and it establishes positive social patterns of conduct. So, laws must be rooted in the love of God and be an expression of it. It is a means and not an end itself. Every law must be evaluated in the light of the greatest law: the love of God and neighbor. Jesus wants us to go into the world and make contact. He did not intend for us to withdraw, purify ourselves, and never reach out. God’s word should always be the focus, and tradition a means of bringing that word alive.
Brothers and sisters, in the second reading, James advises us to get rid of all that is wrong in our lives as mentioned in the Gospel reading and humbly accept the salvation message we always receive. It is; therefore, important to hear what God’s word says, but it is much more important to obey it to the letter. By caring for the orphans, widows, we (the Church) put Christ’s word into practice. Furthermore, when we give with no thought of receiving, we show what it means to truly serve others. Terefore, true faith means nothing if we are contaminated with the values of the world. As James says, let us be doers of the word and not hearers only. By doing what the word tells us, we develop that love relationship with God and of neighbor.
Stay blessed!
Father Raphael

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH, at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!
We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. Tere are no special qualifcations to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.
Te gospel today hits home closer than we may think. What traditions do we blindly cling to? Perhaps it is enough for us just to go to Mass on Sunday? Do we keep the letter of the law and miss entirely the spirit of the law. Interior righteousness means a heart turned to God. Purity of heart is expressed in righteous living: self - giving for the sake of others. As you give your gift to the poor through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, in your heart you also will fnd the good news of God’s love.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

Te return of our students for catechism in the fall brings great joy!
Registration for both in person and online classes has been ongoing through the summer. If you have not yet enrolled your children, please do so now via the parish website (saintmarysmanhasset.org).
Catechists are needed for students in the lower grades (1-5). Please contact me if you would like to learn more about the diference an hour of time can make in the lives of our youngest Catholics. Tis blessed calling ultimately comes from God, whose Holy Spirit inspires and guides us along the path to teaching the Gospel to all people.
It is from you (Parents) that children frst learn about their Catholic faith. Parent involvement is crucial in the growth and enrichment of your child’s faith.

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group
A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.
The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.
The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.
The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.
In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.

A Prayer for Ordinary Time
Creator Redeemer Sustainer God, How extraordinary is Your “ordinary time.” How uncommon is the commonplace in Your Kingdom. Te mundane is made miraculous, full of holy opportunities. Te smallest joy a jubilee!
Created anew may we grow tall and “grace-full” in Your likeness.
Redeemed by Your sacrifce may we come to know the depths of Your love.
Sustained by Your Spirit may we be steadfast and shining in Your service.
We humbly ask that You continue to bless us with all we need for the living of these days— these wondrous ordinary days—. that our everyday lives may be gifted to experience the vitality of Christian community, to share Your message of hope, reaching out to the poor and hurting, and bringing glory and honor to You, our God. Amen.
