A Refection by Father Raphael
REFLECTION FOR THE 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B THEME: HARMONY WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
In the frst reading from the book of Wisdom today, the wicked are pitted against the just man. Tey are determined to rid themselves of his presence simply because his justice itself is a reproach to them. In today’s Gospel, Jesus concludes his Galilean ministry speaking once again of his approaching passion and instructing his disciples on the true meaning of rank or position among his followers. In the second reading from the Epistle of James, the author shows how God’s wisdom imparts virtue while vice originates within the human heart.
What the frst reading shows is a contest between two groups of Jews: the wicked and the virtuous. Te wicked suggests that since they are in the diaspora, they could as well conform to the Greek worldview, by either abandoning the Jewish faith or at least taking a compromising position. Te virtuous man; however, takes a diferent position. He reasons that even in diaspora, one ought to be faithful to the Torah and to the Jewish upbringing. Te problem is that abandoning the Torah has a direct consequence on morality. Te frst action of the wicked is to begin to see “if his words are true.” Te frst challenge is of an intellectual nature by the use of every sort of argument. When this does not work, the second tool is marshalled: insult and torment. Tis has to do with psychological attack. It pertains to a personality attack directed at maligning the integrity of the virtuous. Te third is to condemn him to a shameful death. Tis is an attempt to direct physical harm toward the virtuous. Not just physical harm, but also irreparable damage. Tis is precisely an overturning of the Torah. Terefore, abandoning the Torah leads to a gradual degeneration of the human person.
Te Gospel reading combines two scenarios. Te frst speaks of Jesus’ prediction of his passion and the second narrates the teaching about greatness. In this reading, Jesus is seen going through Galilee and does not even want anyone to know he is there. Moreover, his mind is set on his passion. Te disciples are the opposite. Tey are consumed with the desire to be noticed, to be the greatest. So, Jesus calls them together when they were in the house and gives them two images: A Servant and a Child. In Ephesians 6:1 and 5 the image of children and servants is obedience. Obedience is what is due the father of a household. In the household, there is no contest about greatness. Everyone belongs to the family and everyone is loved by the father of the house. Tat is what the Christian community is like. It is; however, true that Jesus himself attained greatness because of his obedience to the Father. Indeed, if the apostles seek greatness, there is no other path to use than that of obedience to the Father’s will.
Brothers and sisters, there is no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obey. Greatness and harmony in the community of believers can be achieved when we are obedient to the will of the Father. Ambition often leads us to take exceptional, even unethical, steps to get ahead. It often leads to position which is undergirded by power. Power tends to corrupt, and when it is absolute, it corrupts absolutely. Terefore, status was to have no place in the reign of God; it was to be absent from the Church. Tose who exercise authority in the Christian community are not to resemble the “rulers of this world who lord it over their people.” Indeed, this clear teaching of Jesus was frequently neglected. We have sought to be served rather than to serve. We have perpetuated evil so much so that, like in the frst reading, we simply want to eradicate the good person because such a person is a reproach to us. Or like the Gospel, we fght among ourselves for rank. James warns us to beware of our interior motives. Exteriorly, we can seem to be Godlike. But within? James assures us that selfsh ambition will only lead us to “disorder and foul practice.” It is when we serve the neediest, the beloved of God, that we come closest to what Christian leadership means.
Stay Blessed!
Father Raphael
J Stewards of God’s Gifts

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary
“With the Rosary, the Christian people sit at the school of Mary and are led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of His love. Trough the Rosary, the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.” - St. John Paul II, 2002, as the Year of the Rosary and addition of the Luminous Mysteries were announced.
On Tursday, October 10th, we will hold our frst monthly meeting in the St. John Paul II Room at 10:00 AM. All members are welcome to the meeting. We will discuss our plans for 2024-2025 as well as our annual Christmas dinner to be held on Tursday, December 5th.
Our Flu Shot/Immunization Clinic will be held the weekend of October 19th-20th. Dr. Joseph Hansen and his staf of Rite-Aid (Port Washington) will administer the shots after the 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday and before/after all Masses on Sunday EXCEPT the 7:30 AM Mass. Open to all parishioners.
A Musical Rosary will be held on Sunday, October 27th following the 12:00 Noon Mass. All parishioners are encouraged to attend.
On September 12th, the Rosary Society held its Opening Mass and luncheon at Our Lady of Grace Spiritual Center. It was a wonderful way to start the new season in prayer and communion with our fellow Rosarians. Many of us had the pleasure of getting to know Sister Cecilia, the newest resident in the IHM convent at St. Mary’s. Sister Cecilia, among many things, is a very talented artist. If you would like to learn more about her work, you can fnd her most days toiling away in her studio, located in the lower level of the OLG Spiritual Center.

THE CHURCH & SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
52 Collective Years of Service Celebrated
The Church and Schools of Saint Mary have been blessed over the years with dedicated, longtime employees who set a standard of care and work ethic and walk in faith, serving the Lord with gladness through their various positions. On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the staff and many volunteers attended the annual back-to-school Opening Mass and Luncheon. Fr. Bob had the opportunity to announce the retirement of three such staff members during the luncheon, which was held in the Marian Room.
It is with sadness yet joy that we wish Trudy Hoffman, Vincent Hartley, and Sr. Teresa Raftery a wonderful and blessed beginning of the next chapter in their lives, said Fr. Bob.
Trudy Hoffman, a faculty member of St. Mary’s Elementary School for 24 years, has left an indelible mark on the school. Her dedication to sharing a passion for learning with her students, helping them achieve academic excellence in the classroom, and nurturing their Catholic faith formation has been truly inspiring. She was not just a leader, mentor, and friend to her colleagues but also a beacon of light for her students. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her remarkable, kind-hearted enthusiasm will continue to inspire us.
After 17 years as Facilities Manager, Vincent Hartley will finally get the much-needed and deserved time to enjoy retirement. Vincent’s job was a labor of love, and it indeed showed across our beautiful campus thanks to his leadership and love for our parish and schools.
Obstacles like weather, a pandemic, and power outages never slowed him down. Not even a double-knee replacement could keep him sitting on the sidelines for an extended time. Our community will miss his eye for beautification of our campus, quiet demeanor, and mighty strength.
With 11 years at St. Mary’s, Sr. Teresa Raftery, IHM, has brought sunshine to the Parish Office and her inspiring devotion to God. As our Director of Adult Faith Formation, Sr. Teresa spent much time preparing our RCIA candidates for their sacraments, creating opportunities for prayer groups during Lent, and providing care and compassion to all who encountered her spirit-filled personality. We know that she will continue to pray for all of us daily, mainly when she serves as a lector during Mass each week.
During the celebration, Fr. Bob presented each staff member with a token of appreciation for their unwavering dedication and service to St. Mary’s. With their coworkers’ heartfelt accolades and profound gratitude, the luncheon was a beautiful way to begin the new year as a family serving in the name of Christ. We wish our three retirees abundant blessings in their continued life journeys.

Critical Ballot Amending NYS Constitution: Proposal 1 is A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
Pope Francis has reminded us that as thoughtful Catholics, we must participate in the public square for the sake of the common good. We are called to properly inform our consciences, voting for candidates and policies that will best advance the natural law, the protection of human rights, the dignity of the human person, the sacredness of all life, and the teachings of Christ and His Church. New York has a critical referendum on the ballot this November, “Proposal 1,” often called the “Equal Rights Amendment.” While that suggests a noble cause, Proposal 1 has dangerous consequences, and we are urged to vote No. Proposal 1 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing that could lead to darkness for many families, as it disregards the lives of unborn and struggling children in the name of political agendas.
• Proposal 1 is redundant in New York, which has already stripped away abortion limitations. It efectively legalizes abortion up to the moment of birth, and removes the people’s right to initiate any legislation protecting the child in the womb.
• Proposal 1’s inclusion of “age” as a protected class can eliminate parents’ authority over minor children’s destructive and permanent decisions they could later regret, such as so-called “gender afrming” treatments and surgeries. Te relationship between parents and their children is sacred; parents must be able to support and guide their children in accord with natural law.
Faithful Catholics should consider these consequences and vote no.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Prayer for Adoration
Imagine the scene of our Blessed Mother in the humble state of the Nativity. She had no home at that moment other than this place where animals gathered. Yet in the stillness of that holy night, she was at home as she gazed upon her Child with the deepest adoration and love. She gazed in silence as He lay sleeping on the hay. Tis must be an image of your soul. You are called to enter into the humility of the inner dwelling place of your heart. Deep within, you must see this Precious Child, resting in peace. Remain silent and attentive, keep your eyes fxed on Him in adoration, and allow yourself to become consumed with delight at His presence within your soul.
Refect upon your humble and silent prayer. As you sit quietly before Jesus, or even as you go about the duties of your day, are you attentive to the divine presence of your Savior living within you? Do you see Him sleeping there in the stillness? Our souls must become a place of prayer and silence so that we can humbly keep our eyes upon our Lord within this holy dwelling place. If you keep your eyes upon Him, as He dwells silently within you, you will then go about your day with the peace and joy that only this holy Child can bring.

Religious Education
Dear St. Mary’s Religious Education Family,
Te arrival of October brings the start of catechism classes for St. Mary’s online and in person student community. Every year, this parish program leads hundreds of students into a relationship with Christ. Te relationship they form now will grow with God’s grace for the rest of their lives.
It is a blessing to witness how God works through our devoted Catechists. Tis year, several new volunteers have joined our catechesis program. As Mother Cabrini passionately tells us, “Begin the mission, and the means will come.”
Tank you for responding to our outreach eforts. And, we are especially thankful for those committed “bedrock” Catechists who return year after year. Your impact is immeasurable.
Safety and trafc control will once again be carried out on a volunteer basis by Jim Brooks, Chris Muller, and Tim Burke. Tank you for being there to support this most vital part of our ministry.
Classes begin on Sunday, October 6th. Weekday classes start on Tuesday, October 1st. All registered parents will receive a confrmation email next week confrming class details (Catechist name/room number etc.). Students enrolled in the online program will also receive an email with steps to access their online catechism portal.
May we always remember that the Catholic journey and work ahead is not our own.
It comes from Christ who sets our path to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded” (Mt 28:19-20).
Blessings, Mrs. Granieri, Director of the St. Mary Religious Education Program
