Dear Parishioners,
“Your ways are not my ways, says the Lord.” (Isaiah 55:8)
In the parable of the workers, we see people who come in at different times of the shifts. The ones who arrived at the first shift are paid the same as those who work for only an hour. In our human understanding of justice, we assume that those who came first would be rewarded for their dedication and been given a little extra. Yet, we see again how God surprises us with His generosity. “Your ways are not my ways...as high as the heavens are above the earth are my ways above yours.”
The parable gives us a clue to the mercy of God, and Isaiah reminds us that, at times, we cannot comprehend the fountain of mercy and forgiveness that God shares with each of us. This forgiving God invites us to forsake the ways of evil and turn to the Lord while He may be found. So we hear that God wants to forgive our sins and desires that we turn to Him with all our hearts. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is so widely and easily accessible, but how often does pride or justification keep us away from the healing grace of that sacrament. It is a wonderful opportunity to return to God and be forgiven. God, in Jesus, wants nothing more than for us to turn to Him to be released from our sins. With joy does God forgive us.
I can remember many years ago, a famous celebrity, who had turned his back on Jesus and the Church, was on his deathbed and asked for a priest. He was reconciled with God and given a Catholic burial. People were shocked and wondered how one so alienated from God throughout most of his life could, at the last hour, be given the blessing of the Church. Some people wondered why they should remain faithful their whole lives and be given the same hope as that celebrity who came back to the faith at the end of his life. Well, that story is this parable coming to life and taking on flesh. For us who are faithful the reward is not a better place in heaven (you know, like getting a window seat); rather faithfulness and doing God’s will should be the reward in itself. It doesn’t make sense in our understanding, but certainly, in God’s mind, it does.
So why do we have to forgive others, especially if they do not ask for that forgiveness? We know that the power of good and prayer can do marvelous things. So we are called to pray for those who hurt us and wish us harm because we do not know the mind of God. For this same reason, the Church is leery of and cautions against any use of capital punishment. Our desire is that the sinner will turn to God and be reconciled so that they may not go to hell. Again...God’s ways are above our ways. But also the power to forgive changes us and brings us closer to God. We know and have been taught that God loves the sinner and the righteous equally. Forgiving others frees us from a prison of our own making and raises us, even if just a little, closer to the ways of God. Maybe it doesn’t make sense or seems too difficult...but maybe all we can do is strive to do what God asks!
As was announced at our Masses last weekend, our Director of Music, Robert Levulis, will be moving to Philadelphia to pursue post-graduate studies. He will also be helping out where needed in parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. We thank Robert for his almost ten years of dedicated service to our parish and for the many gifts he has shared so wonderfully with St. Mary’s. There will be a small reception after the 10:30 AM Mass in Immaculata Hall Gym. Please join us as we wish Robert well in his new endeavors.
In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
THE
NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4TH at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!
We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.
On September 27, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who knew that “God had sent him to bring good news to the poor.” Together with your gifts, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work and mission in our parish. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to “bring good news to the poor,” by assisting families with food, paying utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
15th ANNUAL
SVDPLI
TOGETHER WE GO FAR 2023
On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford.
The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Parish Outreach in serving families in the neighborhood.
In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.
All funds raised through this event remain with our St. Mary’s Conference to help our neighbors in need, regardless of their religious denomination. This is the only fundraiser for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. We would be so grateful if you would consider donating so that we can continue to help our neighbors in need.
Donations can be made in several ways: 3

Religious Education
Dear St. Mary Religious Education Family,
The beauty of fall is arriving with full force.
What a gift this season is! The lush green of summer is slowly unfolding the splendid colors of orange, red and yellow. The many faces of change (seen and unseen) are present everywhere except in the unchanging ONE who declares “I, the Lord, never change.”
God remains the same forever. It is from you (Parents) that children first learn about their Catholic faith, love and forgiveness. Parent involvement is crucial in the growth and enrichment of your child’s faith. We ask that parents please make a sincere commitment to attend Sunday Mass regularly and reinforce biblical lessons and prayers at home.
St. Mary catechism class assignments for in-person and online catechism have been finalized. To ensure placement and avoid a late start, please be sure to register your child this week via the parish website.
Classes begin next Sunday, October 1st.
We look forward to working together with you on the blessed journey that is ahead of us!

The Schools of Saint Mary
Opening of School Mass & Barbecue Picnic
After a wonderful summer break, the Schools of Saint Mary kicked off the new year with a family social event.
The Schools of Saint Mary held its Opening of School Mass and Barbecue Picnic on Saturday, September 17, 2023. Students and their families gathered to pray and celebrate the Eucharist in the Church of St. Mary at the 5:00 PM Mass before heading to Denihan Field for food, fun, and games. The event was made possible by the hard work of parent volunteers and the enthusiastic attendance of those who came for the evening. It was a fantastic start to the school year and an excellent way for the St. Mary’s Family to unite. We can’t wait for our next event!
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Adoration Prayer
I adore Thee, O Jesus, God of Love, truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I adore Thee, Who has come to Thine own, but was not received by them. I adore Thee, Whom the majority of mankind reject and despise. I adore Thee, Whom the impious incessantly offend by their sacrileges and blasphemies. I adore Thee, Who art grieved by the coldness and indifference even of a vast number of Christians. I adore Thee, O Infinite Goodness, Who hast wrought so many miracles in order to reveal Thy love to us. I adore Thee with all the angels and saints and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of Thy Father and are all aglow with burning love for Thee. I adore Thee with all Thy friends, O Jesus! With them I prostrate myself at the foot of the altar, to offer Thee my most profound homage, to receive Thy Divine Inspiration, and to implore Thy grace. Oh, how good it is for me to be here with Thee! How sweet to hear the Voice of my Beloved! O Victim of Divine Love! A piercing cry breaks forth from Thy Heart here on the altar, as once it did on Calvary; it is the cry of Love: “I thirst,” Thou callest to Thy children, “I thirst for your love! Come, all you whom I love as My Father has loved Me; come and quench the thirst that consumes Me!”
Lord Jesus, behold I come. My heart is small, but it is all Thine own. Thou art a prisoner in our Tabernacles, Thou, the Lord of Lords! And love it is that holds Thee here as such! Thou leavest the Tabernacle only to come to us, to unite Thyself with the faithful souls and allow Thy Divine Love to reign in them. O King of Love! Come, live, reign in me. I want no other law but the law of Thy Love. No, no, I henceforth desire to know naught, neither of the world, nor of what is in it, nor of myself. Thy Love alone shall rule in me eternally.
O Jesus, grant me this grace! Break all my fetters, strip me of all that is not Thyself, in order that Thy Love may be my life here below and my happiness and delight in eternity. Amen.

As we prepare for Respect Life Month in October and lay out our plans for the coming year, please consider joining us. Bring friends and family — very often a simple invitation is enough to encourage someone to participate. What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.
It’s one thing to say who you are.
It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith.
