A Refection by Father Raphael
REFLECTION FOR THE 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B THEME: AVOID JEALOUSY, PURSUE TOLERANCE, AND JUSTICE
Tolerance emerges forcefully in the frst and Gospel readings of today. Te frst reading, taken from Numbers 11:2529, is about the gift of the spirit to the seventy elders. When the spirit comes upon them, they prophesy once but no more. But there are two more of the group, Eldad and Medad, who are in the camp, not in the sanctuary, who also begin to prophesy. Tis story is concerned with the sharing of Moses’ charismatic spirit and distributing it among seventy trustworthy and proven elders of the community at the time of the desert experience. Since Medad and Eldad had not been designated to be a part of the group, the spirit of Moses comes to rest on them within the camp itself. Tere was disagreement between Moses and Joshua at this point to stop them from prophesying. But Moses will not have any of that. He wishes that the distribution of the spirit was even more widespread. Tere should be no limit placed on the action of the spirit. Moses encourages an attitude of tolerance.
Te Gospel reading, taken from Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48, is linked with the frst reading. Te note of tolerance is again present. Jesus argues that anyone engaged in exorcism, in his name, even though not part of his company, is involved in good work. He should not be impeded. Tis tolerance of Jesus sheds light on what he stood for, both for the Jews and the Gentiles.
Tolerance is a more acceptable virtue today than it was in years past. In the past, religious tolerance connoted a form of indiference. It implied that all religious bodies were of equal value. It was often meant simply “to put up with, to endure.” It was passive and lacked any positive truth. But today, the best synonym for tolerance is inclusiveness, which connotes a breadth of vision. As today’s Scripture tells us, no restriction can be placed on God’s action. Human restraints cannot be placed on the ways of the Lord.
Today, for example, we refer to other Christian bodies as churches. We recognize God’s presence among them as well as within our own church. We realize that we all have something to learn from each other. Tolerance is an active virtue when we seek to draw closer to others in inclusiveness. We believe that God is present in the other world religions. All of this was clearly stated at the Second Vatican Council. Tolerance also means inclusiveness for people of another race. Tey have a proper and legitimate place as well in our social and economic structures. Tolerance means asking ourselves if we see men and women as truly equal in our church and society. Tis means that we must broaden our vision and have an open heart.
Another area worth noting is jealousy. Tis fnds an obvious mention in today’s readings also. Because of some narrow-mindedness, certain intolerance was found among the disciples. Tey wanted to remain exclusive and have privileged powers. Tey thought that others who were not authorized by Jesus should not be permitted to do good in His name. It is good to know that God is not bound by our whims and fancies nor by our desires and frames of reference. God’s spirit operates in ways hitherto unknown to us, sometimes even strange to us. Moses puts it succinctly, “Would that all the people were prophets! Would that the Lord put His spirit on them all.” Being zealous for Christ is more important than being jealous. Te feeling of jealousy arises out of an inadequate understanding of the self and the other. God’s ways are mysterious. Some may belong to our fold, but God may operate in those who are not part of our fold.
Today, James addresses the question of social injustice, in the second reading, where the rich exploit the poor. Societal corruption is widespread and worldwide. It even fnds its way into religious bodies where it does great damage to the human spirit. Tis is not to deny the presence of good and qualifed men and women in public life today. Be good, be kind. May the precepts of the Lord give joy to our hearts.
Stay Blessed!

Saturday, October 5th is the First Saturday of the Month
Please consider attending the 9:00 AM Mass at St. Mary’s that day in accordance with the First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady.
Te fve First Saturdays Devotion is a request made by Our Lady of Fatima in her appearances to the three children there. Te Blessed Mother promised to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all who, as an act of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on the frst fve Saturdays of consecutive months:
1. Go to confession
2. Receive Holy Communion
3. Say fve decades of the Rosary
4. Keep Mary company for ffteen minutes meditating on the ffteen mysteries of the Rosary**
In 2002 Pope John Paul II instituted the Luminous Mysteries, stating “the Rosary is at heart a Christocentric prayer” and it had an “important place in his spiritual life during his youth.” **We now keep Mary company for 20 minutes meditating on the 20 mysteries of the Rosary.
Te sacramental confession can be received within eight days either before or after the reception of Communion, provided the communicant is in a state of grace for Communion. Reception of Holy Communion must take place within 24 hours of the frst Saturday. Te reception of Communion need not be part of a Mass.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
The Fine Arts Create an Endless Palette for
Students at St. Mary’s
At Saint Mary’s, our fine arts program is not just a part of our curriculum; it’s a unique and integral part that we are committed to developing consistently each year. While public sector schools struggle to maintain such classes, and many have been eliminated, our program continues to grow, offering our students inspiring opportunities to explore the arts.
Our students don’t just study fine arts; they experience it. From Nursery through eighth grade, the fine arts program is a handson learning experience that is part of their weekly schedules. Last week, our Nursery students, in their vibrant art studio named in memory of Msgr. John J. Skelly explored the work of Henri Mattise and created their own collages. They also learned about still life and other mediums to create their own masterpieces. In the Middle School, students are developing an eye for art in their dedicated and spacious art studio. Assistant Principal Michelle Tripi shared that “students dive into new techniques, mediums, and projects that spark their imagination each week. “Whether it’s painting, sculpture, or mixed media, every grade level gets to express themselves in unique ways through this offering of classes.”
We eagerly anticipate the artistic journeys our students will embark on this school year and look forward to witnessing the transformation of their abilities under the guidance of their accomplished teacher, Miss McQuillan!
We encourage you to learn more about the curriculum at St. Mary’s Elementary and Middle Schools; please contact the Main Office at 516-627-0184 or visit the website saintmaryses.org.
Let’s Go Mets, Let’s Go Gaels!
els! and me on the New Islan es. Principal xplained, “Whi culty had a bla has be ome an a at stadium
On Friday, September 20, 2024, nearly 100 students and faculty members of Saint Mary’s High School traveled to Citi Field in a spirited outing to cheer on the New York Mets. The students stayed after school for a pizza dinner and traveled on the Long Island Rail Road from Manhasset Train Station to Citi Field to see the Mets take on the Phillies. Principal Gerard Buckley was one of the chaperones for the event, and a diehard Mets fan explained, “While it may not have been the outcome that the Mets fans desired, the students and faculty had a blast!” Despite the Mets losing 12-2, the students were thrilled to participate in what has become an annual student life tradition at the school, and they certainly enjoyed time together at the stadium.
The school spirit soars when our students are spending time together! We look forward to seeing more of our Gaels Family at various outings this year.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist, I adore You.
Sweet Companion of our exile, I seek You.
Holy God become man, I beat with Your Heart.
Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, solitary, abandoned, humiliated, cursed, despised, outraged, ignored by men, have mercy on us.
Lover of our hearts, pleading for Your beloved, patiently waiting for us, eager to hear our confdences, desirous of our devotion, have mercy on us.
Heart of grace, silent and wishing to speak, Refuge of the hidden life, Sharer of the secrets of union with God, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Hail to Tee, True Body.
(A Prayer to our Eucharistic Lord)
Hail to thee, true body born
From Virgin Mary’s womb!
Te same that on the cross was nailed And bore for man the bitter doom. Tou, whose side was pierced and fowed Both with water and with blood; Sufer us to taste of thee, in our life’s last agony. O kind, O loving one! O sweet Jesus, Mary’s Son!
Jesus, Victim, I want to comfort You.
I unite myself with You. I ofer myself in union with You. I count myself as nothing before You.
I desire to forget myself and think only of You, to be forgotten and rejected for love of You, not to be understood, not to be loved, except by You. I will hold my peace that I may listen to You. I will forsake myself in order to be lost in You. Grant that I may quench Your thirst for my salvation, Your burning thirst for my sanctifcation, and that, being purged, I may give You a true and pure love. I no longer want to deny Your expectations. Take me. I give myself to You.
I entrust to You all my actions and thoughts -- my mind, that You may enlighten it, my heart, that You may fll it, my will, that You may establish it, my soul and body, that You may feed and sustain them. Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, Whose Blood is the life of my soul, may it no longer be I who live, but You alone Who lives in me. Amen.
