A Letter from Fr. Eddy

Dear Parishioners,

It is my belief that none of us can get used to the idea of death and dying, especially when that prospect is about oneself. With her diagnosis of Stage-IV colon cancer at the age of thirty-five, our subject Kate Bowler, joined a long line of other afflicted persons who are the subject-matter of intense medical research, and why not? She says herself that one of the first things you lose when confronted with a tragedy of this magnitude is your pride. So, laying aside her pride, she subjects herself to some new trial medication/procedure that includes both chemotherapy and immunotherapy. On the one hand, this trial medication is designed to shrink the cancer tumors, and on the other, to build up her already severely compromised immune system. What a travesty, one might say, that this flourishing young professor, married to the love of her life, and having waited nearly ten years to be blessed with an excited and gorgeous child, her only child whom she loved beyond limits, is willing to be used, so to speak, as a guinea-pig for an experimental drug! But what choice had she?

Humbled by the devastating diagnosis and the surgery that follows, Kate is filled with moments of anxiety about the prospect of dying soon, and dying young. Like any ordinary person who has been told she has a thirty to fifty percent chance of survival, she struggles to come to terms with this aching possibility. While she is contemplating the likelihood of letting go and letting death have its way, inexorably, she is also consciously resisting the idea with every fiber of her feeble frame. She has a thousand and one reasons to hold on to life! How can she leave her adorable baby boy, her girlhood sweetheart and husband, and the numerous good friends she has shared life with for so long? Yes, surrender seems like a very Christian ideal, but surrendering to death is not an option, because she believes she is the center that must hold! Ironically, her “… helplessness has only thickened [her] resolve to salvage what [she] can from the wreckage” (p. 85). Yet, she cannot stop daydreaming about the apparent inevitability of her life:

“in the minute between sleeping and waking, when I forget, when I have only a lingering sense that there is something I am supposed to remember. In the warmth of my bed I am caught in webs of dreams…. I am dying, I am dying, I am my son’s first goodbye. I am not the start of a great new day. I am a bright sunset” (p. 66).

In another of her now frequent snapshots of her reality, Kate sees herself

“on a boat caught in the storm and I say to the crew in a bright voice, Don’t worry about me. I was already going to die. I say it with such certainty, impervious to the weight of it and the sound it makes on my lips. But in the day – the real day – I am beginning to notice the expansion of this grief” (p. 67).

Besieged by these and similar thoughts about death, the logistical nightmare it would be to return her remains to Canada for burial, and the apparent “rhythms of grief” already being felt by family and friends swirling around her hospital bed, Kate gains a rare inner quiet, an inner clarity, we could call it, about what is needed and/or wanted at a time like this, and what not. She wished she could

“tell them how few of their words are needed [and] how much their hands are wanted, a hand on my back as I tear up, a hand on my head for a soft prayer for healing. When I feel I am fading away, these hands prop me up and make me new” (p. 75).

Just in case you think you are alone in your suffering, pain, or tragedy, be assured that there are many other persons in similar situations as you, or even worse. Kate learns this lesson when she dares to publicly express her frustrations in the pages of a newspaper. In return, she receives a torrent of letters from complete strangers that opened up new vistas on what people like her are going through, all over the world: “It feels as though the world has been cracked open, and it bleeds and bleeds” (p. 107). Some of the more horrendous of these include the story of a Nurse who has survived Stage-IV cancer for ten years, but her healthy husband dies suddenly from a previously undetected brain bleed. What should she have done? What should she do? What can she do?

Church
Saint Mary

In another story, “A middle aged woman has buried her son after watching bill collectors hunt him, and hospitals, whose treatments would have saved his life, reject him. A check from Medicaid arrives in the mail nine days after his death!” (p. 107)

You may reason that life is unfair, but that is the reality of some people, in a culture that insists that one can do literally everything that they put their mind to. The truth as we have seen, so far, is that no matter how much you put your mind, body, and spirit in some things, they just do not come right! Something in the detail just has a way of coming awry! Sometimes!

Believe it or not, there were many of Kate’s correspondents who made every effort to convince her that there was some inner logic to the seeming chaos of her life. From faith-filled, yet simplistic admonitions to accept God’s divine will and endure her ordeal without complaining too much or losing faith, to the more outrageous suggestions that she is somehow responsible for her affliction, she got them all. One writer actually chides her in the following insensitive message: “Some people might think it’s cruel for God to let you die so young. But the answer is simple and crystal clear. God is a just God to let you die. This is the consequence of your sin” (p. 115)! Why are people so eager to make God a sadist who takes delight in the suffering of His children?

Anyone who is coping with some terrible situation knows how upsetting and offensive it could be when so-called sympathizers attempt to minimize the victim’s pain by suggesting that it could have been worse. Well, thank God it is not worse, but here and now the suffering is as intense as it could possibly be! Would they like to trade places? In fact, others choose this awkward time to display their didactic skills. As Kate learned, these ‘Teachers’ want you to know that there was once a man called Job in the Bible, who suffered the loss of everything he owned, yet God restored him in the end because he did not curse God when he could have done so. Between the ‘Minimizers’ and the ‘Teachers’ it’s often hard to tell who is more insensitive when one includes the ‘Solution People’ in that triad. These are those whose faith has placed them in an imaginary pole position in which they have already figured out everything about everything, including your unique anguish; and knocked into shape a formula, a universal remedy for every situation in life. For this reason, they are quick to release corny catchphrases that they believe should lift up your faith. No, this is not needed, because, as Kate feels,

“There is a trite cruelty in the logic of the perfectly certain…. They are also, always, tallying up the sum of my life, sometimes for clues, sometimes for answers, always to pronounce a verdict. But I am not on trial!”

(p. 119)

Dear friends, remember that the title of this book is, Everything Happens for a Reason. Does everything, indeed, happen for a reason? What on earth is the reason for some of the most difficult situations that people experience from time to time in their lives? Is it, perhaps, because they did something wrong, as some suggest in the case of Kate Bowler, and are being punished for it? Would you rather blame the devil and his evil machinations under the cover of darkness? I would like to know what you think about this, and you can drop me a line on my official email address, which appears at the bottom of this page. May the Lord grant us more clarity about His ways in our lives. Amen!

Fr. Edward Obi, MSP (

).

P.S. Next Sunday, I shall write my last Letter in this series, and would suggest that you check out Kate’s Web page at katebowler.com I hope to meet you all here in next Sunday’s issue to conclude this discussion.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to MARY! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH

This feast on September 8th was celebrated before the Church honored Mary’s Immaculate Conception on December 8th. To calculate the day, the Church simply counted backwards nine months to arrive at the date of her conception. Whatever the reality is behind the date, what is true is that the Virgin Mary was born and her birth prepared the way for the coming of Jesus. (aleteia.org)

Blessed Virgin Mary, at your birth the patriarchs and prophets rejoiced, for you announced the coming of our salvation. We celebrate your birth and ask your help in our daily lives. In a world filled with violence, fear, and anxiety, help us to be examples of living in Gospel joy. Amen.

Bread & Wine are offered this week in loving memory of Dr. Peter J. Calabretta, Sr.

The Parish Office will be closed this Monday, September 4th, in observance of Labor Day. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will not take place.

Alzheimer’s Educational Series Coming to St. Mary’s this Fall

The Church of Saint Mary is pleased to announce an upcoming Educational Series for the fall season as part of the parish outreach efforts through the newly renovated Good Samaritan House – serving those in need. The series will be hosted at St. Mary’s in collaboration with the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Chapter has generously offered to conduct two types of seminars this fall. The first seminar aims to provide information to those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s. The second seminar will focus on providing information and support to caregivers of individuals with the disease.

According to Eileen Symmons, director of communications for the Church and Schools of St. Mary, “Our initiative to present educational opportunities on various topics is just one of the many ways we look to serve the community through our Office of Parish Social Ministry known as the Good Samaritan House. By working with organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, we can provide access to resources and facilitate programming for our parishioners, school community, and residents of the greater Manhasset area right here on our campus as part of our Catholic faith to carry out corporal works of mercy to help the sick and those in need. With the upcoming two-part series on Alzheimer’s, St. Mary’s will bring people

together on the patient side and those with a common goal to compassionately care for a loved one while navigating the difficult journey as a caregiver.”

The Long Island Chapter’s Executive Director, Douglas Davidson, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is committed to the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. We look forward to partnering with St. Mary’s to bring important resources to their parishioners.”

Five one-hour sessions will be offered in the Parish Ministry Center beginning on Monday, October 16. Advance registration is requested. For more information, please contact the Director of Parish Social Ministry, Kathleen Kosciusko, at 516-365-2705 or kkosciusko@stmary.ws.

Enrollment is open to parishioners, non-parishioners, and the community at large. We encourage you to share this opportunity with loved ones and friends. To view the schedule or register for one or more of these seminars, please see the opposite page.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Prayers at Adoration

I adore you, O Infinite Goodness, who has wrought so many miracles, in order to reveal your love to us. I adore you, with all the angels and saints, and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of your Father and are all aglow with burning love for you. I adore you with all your friends, O Jesus!

I adore you Jesus, true God, and true man, present in the holy Eucharist, kneeling before you and united in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the saints in heaven. In gratitude for so great a blessing, I love you with all my heart, for you are worthy of all praise and adoration.

My Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that You are really here in this Sacrament. Night and day You remain here compassionate and loving. You call, You wait for, You welcome everyone who comes to visit You. I thank You, Jesus my Divine Redeemer for coming upon the earth for our sake and for instituting the Adorable Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in order to remain with us until the end of the world. I thank You for hiding beneath the Eucharistic species

Your infinite majesty and beauty, which Your Angels delight to behold, so that I might have courage to approach the throne of Your mercy.

I thank You dear Jesus, for having become the priceless Victim, to merit for me the fullness of heavenly favors. Awaken in me such confidence in You that their fullness may descend ever more fruitfully upon my soul.

I thank You for offering Yourself in thanksgiving to God for all His benefits, spiritual and temporal which He has bestowed on me. Grant me grace and perseverance in your faithful service. Amen.

Second Collection

Next Weekend for

Next weekend, the diocese will be taking up the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Catholic University is a national research university with over 5,700 undergraduate and graduate students in more than 250 academic programs in the heart of Washington, D.C. By giving to the collection, you are supporting both future Catholic leaders, religious and lay, who are being formed by an exceptional, Faith-inspired education and the University’s various research and training initiatives that support dioceses and parishes in responding to the most pressing needs of their faithful. The Catholic Project - an initiative that brings together clergy and laity to address the challenges that the Catholic Church faces in the U.S. contributing education, formation, research, events, and media, a master’s program in Ecclesial Administration and Management, and a credentialing program that prepares recent graduates to serve as campus ministers are a few examples how the University is serving the Church and nation. Please give generously. Support the collection at: futurecatholicleaders.igivecatholictogether.org.

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation

Four Children Received into the Church Last Sunday at the 10:30 AM Mass

Sister Teresa worked with four children who wanted to become Catholic and after a series of meetings over several months these children, Beckham Fisher, Shane, Maya and Miles Dillon received their Sacraments of Initiation in a beautiful ceremony at the 10:30 Mass AM last Sunday celebrated by Father Bob.

Do You Know Someone Who Would Like to Become Catholic? Do You Need to Complete Your Sacraments of Initiation? New Program Begins Soon on September 12th

If you would like to join these children and their families in the joy they experienced on their special day, please call Sister or come into the parish office to make an appointment. Sister will be happy to explain the process by which we bring adults into the Church or help them to complete their Sacraments of Initiation. She hopes to begin our new program for this year on September 12th, if she has some interested people who do respond.

Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Today, we hear Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us. Last month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul enabled the poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting families, providing food, paying utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
