A Refection by Father Raphael

REFLECTION FOR THE 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B

THEME: LIBERATION AND RESTORATION: A GIFT OF GOD

Human life is impaired when deformities occur. In the frst reading from Isaiah 35:4-7, the prophet sees future liberation as a healing of human illness and a restoration of wholeness. In the gospel, Jesus, the fulfllment of Isaiah’s hope, heals a man’s deafness and dumbness. In the second reading (James 2: 1-5), James mentions very practical lessons on equality and just treatment towards others.

Tis twenty-third Sunday, the frst reading has the theme of restoration of Israel after the exile. Two things are being restored: frst the land, then the people who will dwell in it. So, when God is restoring Israel, the desert is being restored into a garden as well. Terefore, the restoration of the vegetation means that man can “till the land.” And this is the frst occupation of man. Man is therefore restored to till the land. In this restoration of man, four faculties are mentioned – sight, hearing, walking, and speaking. With these, man is once again able to take dominion and to take care of created things and have the capacity to serve the Lord. Tat is why persons sufering from deformities of any kind would be prevented from approaching the sacred to serve (Leviticus 21:18 f). Unless one is thus restored, he cannot intimately commune with the divine. Tis is the reason for the necessity of liberation and restoration for all.

Te Gospel reading is taken from Mark 7:31-37. Te story is also about liberation and restoration of a deaf and dumb person. Te concept of being deaf is linked to the inability to hear the Word of God. If one could not hear the word, how was he expected to keep the law? And if he could not keep the law, how could he belong to God’s people? Te question of dumbness was a related matter. Te dumb person was someone who could not speak in defense of himself. If he breaks the law, how could he put up a defense? How could he even beg for forgiveness? Terefore, the deaf and the dumb person was the person completely not in order as far as the Law was concerned.

How can people who are deaf and dumb be sent out (Apostolos)? It does not sufce to “lay hands on them.” Jesus frst has to deal with the impediments, those things which cause a resistance to hearing and speaking God’s word. Once they are freed from those impediments, they are to proclaim the gospel widely and are also reintegrated into society.

Today’s theme reminds us that Jesus came to restore integrity to the disabled. Tis was God’s way of making crooked ways straight at the dawn of a new era and fnally putting sin to death on the cross. In Jesus’ cure of a deaf and dumb man, more compassion and generosity are evident. We are also to show compassion and be generous to others.

Dear friends, very often we hear God’s word but do not listen. Attention and will are lacking. Te diference between hearing and listening is that while attention is required in the latter, the former does not. Te word takes no root within us when there is no attention (listening). We are often addicted to sin (deaf and dumb) in some form so much so that we sometimes neglect the cry of human needs. Yet God has been generous. His voice is ever present in word, sacrament, and the teachings of the Church. Our deafness can be overcome in many ways. James today gives us a very practical example to avoid discrimination, for it is unchristian. Yet we fall prey to its designs by showing favoritism, preferential treatments, and eliminating people of inferior status from our company on the basis of color, creed, or ethnic backgrounds. Tat is when God’s message is proclaimed, we so often hear but do not listen.

Today’s liturgy reminds us that our deafness can be cured if we develop strong faith in God and avoid discrimination of all forms. Faith is the result of a change of life. By faith and good works, we shall be restored to that new life in Christ. May the Lord heal and restore all the sick in our families and our church community from physical, mental, emotional, and psychological sickness. We pray, Lord, open our ears and our lips that we may worthily proclaim your word. And “may we receive true freedom and an everlasting inheritance” (today’s Collect).

Stay Blessed!

Father Raphael

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

September 8th - Te Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tis feast was celebrated before the Church honored Mary’s Immaculate Conception on December 8th. To calculate the day, the Church simply counted backwards nine months to arrive at the date of her conception. Whatever the reality is behind the date, what is true is that the Virgin Mary was born and her birth prepared the way for the coming of Jesus. (aleteia.org)

Prayer: Blessed Virgin Mary, at your birth the patriarchs and prophets rejoiced, for you announced the coming of our salvation. We celebrate your birth and ask your help in our daily lives. In a world flled with violence, fear, and anxiety, help us to be examples of living in Gospel joy. Amen.

September 12th - Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary

Te feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary is an optional memorial honoring the Blessed Mother. Te feast originated in Spain in the early 1500’s. Pope Innocent XI extended the celebration throughout the Church in the late 1600’s, commemorating Mary’s intercession at the Battle of Vienna. Te feast day was to be celebrated four days after the Birth of the Blessed Mother. After Vatican II the feast day was removed from the Church calendar, however Pope John Paul II reinstituted the feast day as “optional” in early 2000 in the third addition of the Roman Missal.

Let us pray: Lord, our God, when your Son was dying on the alter of the cross, He gave us as our mother the one He had chosen to be His own mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary; grant that we who call upon the holy name of Mary, our mother, with confdence in her protection may receive strength and comfort in all our needs. Amen.

In today’s Gospel we hear how Jesus “makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!” In living the gospel, we must open our ears to hear and recognize all the everyday opportunities for making God’s presence known especially to those who are poor and sufering. On September 9th, the Church also celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are sufering. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can “make God’s presence known” to those who are sufering and poor?

Liturgical Ministry

Thank you so much for your continued generosity! Let the little children come to me... (Matt 19:14)

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.

The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.

In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.

ALL FUNDS RAISED BY OUR TEAM THROUGH THIS EVENT WILL REMAIN WITH OUR ST. Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Deepening Our Spiritual Journey Trough Adoration

Engaging in prayers before the Blessed Sacrament connects us with Christ’s divine mystery. By dedicating time to these prayers, we deepen our spiritual journey and solidify our relationship with Jesus. We can have these moments of adoration in silence or with others. Tey enrich our faith and remind us of Christ’s eternal love and sacrifce. Let these prayers guide you to a closer bond with the Savior, reinforcing the bond that nourishes our souls

A Prayer of Faith in Te Divine Eucharist

I believe in my heart and openly profess that the bread and wine which are placed upon the altar are by the mystery of the sacred prayer and the words of the Redeemer substantially changed into the true and life-giving Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ Our Lord and after the Consecration, there is present the true Body of Christ which was born of the Virgin Mary and ofered up for the salvation of the world, hung upon the Cross, and now sits at the right hand of the Father and there is present the true Blood of Christ which fowed from his side. Tey are present not only by means of a sign and of the efcacy of the Sacrament, but also in the very reality and truth of their nature and substance. Amen.

Prayer In Adoration of Te Blessed Sacrament

I adore You, Bread from Heaven. I adore You, Bread of Angels. I adore You, My Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. (Pause for silent adoration.)

I adore You, Jesus, my true life because You died for love of me. I adore You, Jesus, Divine Light because You show me the way to heaven. I adore You, Jesus, Divine Lamb, Who takes away the sin of the world. (Pause for silent adoration.)

My God and Savior Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, I frmly believe that You are really and bodily present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. From the very depths of my heart, I adore You. (Pause for silent adoration.)
