Spring 2013 Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends: It is my pleasure to share with you the 2011-2012 Annual Report for Saint Mary’s High School. Enclosed you will find an overview of our financial status as well as a recognition of the generous alumni and friends who supported us in the 2011-12 fiscal year. As this report celebrates, more and more alumni and friends are investing in St. Mary’s and our students, and they understand the very real financial challenges that we face in continuing to offer excellent and accessible Catholic education. This Annual Report is one way we formally recognize our donors and thank them for their support. Also included for the first time in this publication, is an overview of our financial data. It is no news to anyone that balancing the cost of a quality education while managing operating expenses of a secondary school is an easy task. St. Mary’s continues to be committed to providing the best educational experience for our young men and women. It is the work of many dedicated Catholic school educators and administrators that strengthens our position. Their collective wisdom gives testimony to over 60 years of St. Mary’s tradition. I am grateful to our pastor and alumnus, Monsignor John J. McCann ’57 and Principal Jonathan Kramer ‘92 for their leadership and support. Without them, we would not be able to accomplish the fine work that we do today. You would be proud of the St. Mary’s students today. In 2011-12, 660 young men and women came together each day to learn. We are a community of inspired thinkers and creative leaders. Our mission remains steadfast - to empower students to find inspiration and joy, and learn what they are capable of accomplishing. The values that they learn through their Catholic education at St. Mary’s High School teaches them to face life’s challenges with faith and creativity, and to share their talents with others in need. But, we need your help. The transparency of this data demonstrates our needs. It is with an increased sense of urgency that I ask you to consider supporting St. Mary’s High School this year. A gift of any size is valuable and greatly appreciated. It shows your belief in our mission, and supports students who genuinely benefit from a St. Mary’s education. If you have not already, I hope you will join me in making a gift to our Annual Fund. All Annual Fund gifts this year will be directed to our most critical and pressing need – scholarship and tuition assistance. I look forward to sharing with you more email communications in the coming months of school and a printed version of the Magnificat early this summer highlighting the achievements of our Class of 2013. I hope it will inspire you to continue supporting St. Mary’s and spread the good news of the work we accomplish together on campus. God bless you and your families. Sincerely,

Grace M. Cavallo

Tuition per student for the 2011-2012 school year was $8,850. However, the actual cost per student was $11,203; a shortfall of $2,380. Each year we strive to maintain an affordable tuition level while maintaining and enhancing our academic, spiritual, and athletic programs. The shortfall is covered with fundraising efforts including generous contributions made by alumni, parents, and friends. We continue to develop, with some success, our efforts to receive grant support from private foundations with which we assist families in need of tuition assistance and scholarship.

2011 Don Monti Memorial

Golf Classic

The Don Monti Golf Classic is an annual fundraising event to benefit Saint Mary’s High School. Don Monti was a St. Mary’s sophomore when he died of leukemia in 1972. In appreciation for all that St. Mary’s gave to Don, his parents the late Tita and Joe Monti, his sister Caroline Monti Saladino, her husband Arthur, and his brother, Richard Monti generously support St. Mary’s High School. The golf classic has been named in Don’s memory since 1996. Every year, alumni come together to rekindle St. Mary’s connections and raise money which directly benefits current St. Mary’s students. Another component was added in 2003 when the Coughlin Family chose to honor the memory of the late Timothy J. Coughlin ’76 who was tragically killed on 9/11/01 with the presentation of the Timothy J. Coughlin ‘76 Outstanding Alumnus Award. This growing list of alumni who are committed to St. Mary’s High School is an inspiration to all who attend the outing. Tom Hoban ’76 and a parent of a 2011 alumnus, TJ, was the recipient of the 2011 Timothy J. Coughlin ‘76 Outstanding Alumnus Award. Timothy J. Scholarship Awards and Tuition Assistance

Scholarship and Tuition Assistance awards are made each year with funds contributed by the generosity of benefactors over the years. 126 students received scholarship awards in 2011-12. St. Mary’s High School is so grateful to alumni, parents, and friends who have established and contributed to scholarship and tuition assistance funds over the years. We encourage others to consider sharing their own resources by making a contribution to our existing named funds so that we may perpetuate the legacy of those for whom we recognize with each award. The following is a list of the named tuition assistance and scholarship awards that are granted to St. Mary’s High School students each year.

Denihan Family Scholarship On behalf of the students who are the beneficiaries of your generosity, we express our deep thanks.

Tuition and financial aid are the greatest challenges facing St. Mary’s today. Tuition costs are increasingly difficult for families who desire a Catholic education. Below are some selective responses from scholarship and tuition assistance recipients. They are representative of all the grateful students who receive assistance in order to complete their education at Saint Mary’s High School.

The Chapdelaine Family Scholarship The Chapdelaine Family Scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior to assist with college tuition. Dear Chapdelaine Family: Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity in giving me a scholarship to help further my education. I am currently attending New York Institute of Technology and am enrolled in the Physical Therapy program. I cannot express how much this scholarship means to me and my family. It is a great help in helping me to achieve my dream. I am very grateful to you. Sincerely, Sabrina DeBernardo ‘12 2012 Chapdelaine Scholar

Beba DeGaal Memorial Scholarship Established by members of the DeGaal family, this memorial scholarship is awarded each year to one female student who demonstrates a commitment to Mrs. DeGaal’s belief that education transforms lives. Mrs. DeGaal was a beloved member of the St. Mary’s High School faculty for many years. Many of her former students and colleagues enjoy seeing her memory honored through this scholarship, which they know would mean so much to her. “By being a member of the St. Mary’s community, I have learned that I have a family and a great set of friends in my second home at St. Mary’s. I grew to love my second family, not only my peers but the teachers and staff as well. I will take away from St. Mary’s not only four years of education, but a sense of commitment, drive and faith that I know will take me far. I would like to thank the DeGaal Family from the bottom of my heart. They have inspired me to push myself even more. In the future, I want to be a role model like they are.“ Katherine Cardy ’13 2012 Beba DeGaal Scholar

Below is a moving letter from one of our students who benefitted from tuition assistance provided by generous benefactors.

My Dearest Guardian Angel: It is with extreme gratitude that I write this letter. I thank you for supporting my senior year at St. Mary’s High School. I could not have imagined having to leave my school and my friends because of circumstances beyond my control. I know my mother would have found a way to make it possible for me to stay, however it would have been at the expense of me and my sister. Having lost my grandmother and our home that I grew up in, losing my friends and the opportunity to graduate with them would have been devastating. I know my grandmother is watching over me and I know that she would have been proud to see me graduate and receive my diploma with my senior Class of 2012. Thank you for the opportunity to finish my senior year at St. Mary’s with my friends and the teachers who have started to shape me into the woman that I am about to become. Knowing that you were there helping me to stay focused on my studies and achieve my goals without the worry fo how my mother or my family was going to pay tuition made all of this possible. Words cannot describe the burden that you lifted from my heart, and the grateful feeling I wake up with every day. They say that good things come when you least expect them, and at a time when my life was turned upside down you gave me the opportunity to see my dreams start to take shape. One day I plan to repay the favor knowing that someone less fortunate than me may need those same opportunities that you and my extended family at St. Mary’s offered me. God bless you. Know that I am forever indebted to you.

Monsignor John McCann ’57, Pastor of the Church of Saint Mary, regularly celebrates Mass with the student body. He welcomes students back at the Opening of School Masses in September 2012.

Pastor’s Scholarship Awarded to students with the highest scores on the TACHS/CHSEE Entrance Exams, this scholarship is used as a way to recognize and motivate incoming freshmen. It is a four year scholarship dependent on the recipients’ academic standing. “The Pastor’s Scholarship allowed me to come to St. Mary’s, where I learned that school is not just a building with students, but a community of people and family. I will take away from St. Mary’s a deep sense of confidence and pride. I am proud of my education here and grateful for how it will influence my future.” Suzette Cha ‘14 2010 Pastor’s Scholar “I chose St. Mary’s because of this scholarship. Receiving it meant a lot to me and helped my family a great deal. During my four years here, I have learned the meaning of community and the importance of giving back. I have broadened my knowledge of Christian values and faith and the skills I need to be a better Christian.” Tara Lamb ‘12 2008 Pastor’s Scholar “Academic investment is expensive, but when it is successful it revolutionizes the person who has the knowledge to make a profound contribution to society.” Taylor Wilson ‘15 2011 Pastor’s Scholar “St. Mary’s helped me develop my faith and values through its environment. Its size really allows you to become close with people and learn from them. The values that St. Mary’s instilled in me will always be a part of me. Without this scholarship, I would not have had the opportunity to be in such a great school. It meant a lot to my family and opened many doors for me.” Victor Parraga’12 2008 Pastor’s Scholar

Christopher Valentine ’78 Tuition Assistance Fund In 2011, Margo and Roger Coleman formally established the Christopher Valentine Tuition Assistance Fund in memory of their dear friend and classmate. Chris was the youngest of seven children. As a high school student, he was very involved in athletics, particularly swimming, diving and lacrosse. Chris’ young life tragically ended at the age of 20 in a boating accident. Chris made it to shore, but went back into the water to save his friends. He died a hero, and his friends Margo and Roger Coleman honor him as such with this fund in his name. “By being a member of the St. Mary’s community, I have learned that it is important to give all you can. I have developed my faith and values through extracurricular activities in campus ministry. I have also learned to be thankful and to share what I have with others. I would like to thank the Valentine Fund for the generous support in my last year at St. Mary’s. I would like the chance to do this for someone else in the future.” Kasey LaRosa ‘13 2012 Christopher Valentine Scholar

Brother Kenneth Robert, FMS Scholarship Established in 2012 through the generosity of numerous grateful alumni, parents and friends, the Brother Kenneth Robert, FMS Scholarship recognizes the dedicated work of the many religious men and women who have taught at St. Mary’s High School. Since its founding in 1949, faculty members of the orders of the Marist Brothers of the Schools and Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, have dedicated their lives to educating St. Mary’s students. Awards are both merit and needs based and consideration is given to leadership qualities, service activities, and involvement in student life. Recipients are obligated to maintain academic success in order to maintain the scholarship. Brother Kenneth has been a teacher, coach and mentor at St Mary’s High School since 1958. He currently serves as assistant athletic director and is very much a part of student life today.

“Over the years you have been influential in many students’ lives. I am certainly one of them. Without our talks during high school I don’t know where I would have ended up. I was a bit lost and headed down the wrong road for sure, but you saw something in me when no one else did. I admit I had no idea what you were trying to tell me sometimes, but as time has passed I understand more each day. The fact that you cared to take the time had a profound effect on my life. Know that I take each day a little slower so I can appreciate what God has given me, and look to take time to help someone whenever I can. I always try to do the right thing the way my brother, Kenneth, by example taught me so well.” – Matt Gilroy 2003 New York Rangers #97

The following alumni, parents, and friends generously contributed to the Brother Kenneth Robert, FMS Scholarship at Saint Mary’s.
