Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends,

With deep gratitude and humility, I write this letter to accompany our 2018-2019 Annual Report on Giving for The Schools of Saint Mary. This report demonstrates the abundant beneficence of so many of our current parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, parishioners, and faculty and staff. Your gifts include those of wholehearted support of our schools through countless volunteer hours, your ambassadorship of our mission in word and deed, and your support of the work of our schools with financial contributions to the annual fund, scholarships, and special events. More than anything, your gift of affection for our community of students is greatest of all. It is manifested by your prayers, support, and participation in the life of our students and our school community. For this I am very grateful.

As I walk around the campus, I witness true joy in our students. In the classroom, on the stage, on the athletic court, or in service programs, they collaborate in an authentic Catholic manner. That it, they respect differing points of view, they are inclusive of fellow students, and they support each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Each day, we pray for each other, our community, and the world around us. Our students, from the youngest to our high school seniors, learn about the life and teachings of Jesus. As they study the bible, they learn about his embracing love, his forgiveness, and his courage and strength in adversity. They know how Jesus was ridiculed by his enemies, how his friends abandoned him in adversity, how he suffered resentment and doubt. Our students take on the armor of Christ in their daily walk. They have learned true faith in Jesus. Therein lies their hope and the joy that I witness on campus in each of their faces and in their actions.

The gifts you shall see listed in this report falls short of the magnanimous gift of abundant prayer you bestow on our community. In your prayers, Jesus does all things. He blesses us and our schools with deep faith, boundless hope, and unbridled courage to do all things in HIM. For all your gifts of time, talent, treasure – and especially prayer – I am so very grateful.

President’s Message

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends,

This past October the Church canonized Cardinal John Henry Newman and our school responded by renaming our campus ministry room the Campus Ministry/Newman Centre in honor of the new saint. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest minds in the history of the Church. Cardinal Newman spent his whole life working in the field of education and had as his motto: “Heart Speaks to Heart.” The saint believed that the primary way education takes place is through the process of personal influence. The teacher’s enthusiasm and love for an academic subject combines with a genuine desire to help each student grow in knowledge and virtue. In this way, each person who comes under the teacher’s influence is helped to become what God created them to be.

At St. Mary’s, this kind of education becomes a reality through continued work with our students across a wide variety of fields. Our seventh grade students are learning how use the Socratic method in their literature classes, as they organize evidence for their conclusions and present compelling arguments to their classmates. Our fourth graders recently discovered the mathematical patterns in natural forms such as conch shells and sunflowers, tracing this ordering principle to its discoverer, the twelfth century mathematician, Fibonacci. Our Mock Trial team travelled to Harvard University in the fall to compete and hone their skills at the highest level. Through their meetings and competitions they gained both experience and inspiration. Our chorus and orchestra students recently competed successfully at the All-County Music Festival at the Tilles Center. On the athletics front, our new fencing team competed locally for the first time and this spring our growing crew team will take to the waters of North Hempstead Harbor.

Recently, we had a group of young alumni come back to visit over their Christmas break. The cafeteria was filled with the happy voices of over fifty young graduates. Over pizza and soda, they reminisced about their high school days, met with their former teachers, and shared ambitious plans for the future. It was a cheerful event filled with optimism. Without the personal influence of their time at St. Mary’s, this would not have been possible.

Your generosity, so amply displayed in this report, is a key reason for all of this past year’s successes. It’s because of your gifts, of all kinds, that we are able to influence our young people for their own good and the good of countless others. Everyone they go on to influence in life, their friends, their children and their children’s children will be touched by your generosity. For all of this, we are most grateful to you.

Annual Fund

Annual giving supports our current Elementary School and High School students. The annual fund goes directly to our operating budget and provides funds for current academic and extra-curricular programs including academics, athletics, performing arts, service programs, and technology. You may direct your gift to either the Elementary School, High School, or split it between the two. Every gift, of every amount, is valued and appreciated. Scholarships

Establishing a scholarship to support a student of our High School or Elementary School is a wonderful way to honor your own legacy as a St. Mary’s alum. It is also a great way to honor a beloved teacher or coach. You may establish a named, endowed scholarship from which an award is made to a student each year while the principal of your gift remains intact. To establish a named scholarship fund, please call the Development Office.

Giving thanks for the blessings we have received and sharing those gifts with others are two cornerstones of our faith. A meaningful way to give back to our schools is by making a gift in your estate plan to St. Mary’s. There are many ways to easily make a planned gift. Please check with you financial advisor.
