A Letter from Judy and Pat
Dear Alumni and Friends: American inspirational writer Anthony J. D’Angelo is quoted as saying, “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” The Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary family is the ultimate example of a community built on caring for each other. That is why both of us, though technically retired, choose to remain involved. Our lives, like yours, were changed because of the love we felt from the students, parents, Clerics of St. Viator, Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, and the hundreds of lay faculty and staff while working at Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary. Both of us were fortunate to experience both institutions while they were in their own respective facility, and blessed when the decision was made to merge these two great schools into one incredible community. The traditions of both schools were always centered on being communities of faith that care for each other, communities that use their core values to make the world a better place. We are both so excited to continue our involvement at various events planned for the alumni and friends of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary. In this issue of “A Lion for Life Magazine” you will learn about many new initiatives building on the traditions of community that we all cherish. Enjoy the content of this issue, browse the school’s new website, and take time to reach out to the school to update us on what you are doing today. Make sure to mark your calendar for Alumni Homecoming 2015 on Friday, October 23. Join us at school for a tour of the renovated facilities and Mass in the Alumni Memorial Chapel before we head to the Alumni Tent to cheer the Lions on to victory at Forest View Stadium. It will be a great opportunity for you to visit with old friends, and to experience the excitement of today’s student body. The current student body is just like you were in your day — incredible young people who care about each other and have their sights set on making a difference. They are also very fortunate and grateful for you staying involved. Your involvement is allowing today’s students to continue that tradition of excellence that is synonymous with both Saint Viator High School and Sacred Heart of Mary. Thank you for staying involved, and God Bless,
Judith Wampach Amberg Director of Alumni Relations Emeritus

Saint Viator Graduates Dig Deep Welcome the Class of 2015 to the Alumni Association They started as freshmen, at the end of Saint Viator High School’s historic 50th anniversary celebration, and over their four years, they saw the school enter its iPad era and experienced its improvements from its $14 million renovation—from the Scanlan Center to the state-ofthe-art Marie Gallagher Academic Commons. Looking ahead, they have lived through the dust and disarrangement of the cafeteria that will result in Fr. Louis Querbes Hall, a multimedia-enabled 500-seat collegiate style-dining hall, and new performing and visual arts facilities. Yes, these 246 graduates (including over 30 legacy students) helped usher in a new era at Saint Viator, and now they leave for college with that same sense of confidence and intellectual independence rooted in Catholic principles. Their college choices are impressive: from Boston College to Georgetown University to the University of Notre Dame and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Equally as impressive is the amount of scholarship money Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V. they earned: more than $25 million.
Grace Hubick ’15, daughter of Mary Joan Hogan Hubick ’74. This year’s valedictorian and salutatorian were Mack Rooney ’15, and Clare Hannon ’15, respectively.
and Darryl Crady ’15.
Yet, even as these graduates leave, this much we know: as Saint Viator graduates, they enter the world with a strong sense of God’s love for them and their unique role in His plan—to serve and improve the world.
Brittany Herrmann ’15, daughter of Denise Szczeblowski Herrmann ’83.
Sean Culm ’15, son of Geoffrey Culm ’88.
As seen on cover: Jason Wilhite ’15 was presented with the Christopher Erdmann Award and Krystal Harris ’15 was presented with the Andrew Johnstone Award. 4

Ordination of Fr. Daniel lydon, C.S.V. Visual Arts Sharpen Focus on iPads Nearly 50 faculty and staff traveled to the historic St. Viator Church in Chicago—which the Viatorians founded in 1888— to witness the ordination of their colleague, Fr. Daniel Lydon, C.S.V. ’73. Bishop Christopher Glancy, C.S.V., the Viatorians' only active bishop, came from Belize to preside at the ordination. Bishop George Rassas, an auxiliary bishop with the Archdiocese of Chicago, was also on hand for the Mass. Two former presidents of Saint Viator High School, Fr. Charles Bolser, C.S.V., and Fr. Thomas von Behren, C.S.V., concelebrated the ordination Mass. "We gather today in great joy," Bishop Glancy said to those in attendance. "This is just what Pope Francis said about consecrated life: It is a joyful moment."
One of Fr. Lydon’s former students in attendance recognized many of the saints featured in the Litany of Saints to be the same ones he highlighted in his ethics classes at Saint Viator. In thanking everyone afterwards, Fr. Lydon described the day as a "celebration of community" and a reminder for those on hand to listen to their own calls—and to act on them. "Sometimes we never know about these turn of events," Fr. Lydon said. "If Fr. Bolser hadn't hired me in 1994, you just never know what would have happened." Fr. Lydon celebrated his first Mass of thanksgiving one day later at St. Viator Parish, where Fr. Thomas Kass, C.S.V., offered the homily. In it, he pointed to Fr. Lydon's ordination as a sign of hope in a world surrounded by violence and conflict. "Let your priestly heart be grounded in mercy, in hope and in love and in the activity of prayer," Fr. Kass said.
Fr. Lydon first met the Viatorians when he attended Saint Viator High School, after graduating from Queen of the Rosary School in Elk Grove Village. He graduated in 1973 and later returned in 1994, when he was hired to teach Spanish. Fr. Lydon ultimately served as assistant principal.
This fall, Fr. Lydon will return to Saint Viator High School, to teach in the religion department and help develop a new faith program for adults offered by Campus Ministry.
He has spent the last four years completing his seminary studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where Fr. Mark Francis, C.S.V., serves as president.
Fr. Dan Lydon C.S.V. ’73 (center) was ordained at St. Viator Church in Chicago.
Ben ’15, Chris ’02 and Joe ’07 Paolelli attended his first Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Viator Parish.
Bishop Glancy, C.S.V. blessed Fr. Dan Lydon C.S.V. ’73. 5

Thank You Liz and Nancy
Saint Viator High School lost a pair of veteran teachers, who collectively represent 44 years of teaching and commitment to Saint Viator High School.
Students and alumni know Mrs. Kieffer from one of the core classes in Saint Viator’s college prep curriculum: Literature and Composition.
English department chair Nancy Kieffer and chemistry teacher Liz Englbrecht retired this year after long and successful careers.
In all, Mrs. Kieffer has taught English at Saint Viator for 18 years. If you ask her for her favorite unit, she answers unequivocally: Shakespeare.
Mrs. Englbrecht’s leave comes after 26 years in the lab. Over the years, she taught nearly every science subject, including physical science, chemistry, honors chemistry, AP chemistry, chemistry II, astronomy, and physics.
Mrs. Kieffer also served as the English Department chairperson for many years. As a group, the department worked to provide students with critical thinking skills as well as clear writing skills, thoughtful decision-making skills and respect for others.
Looking back, Englbrecht described astronomy as one of her favorite classes. She especially enjoyed leading trips to the Adler Planetarium, as well as Nickol Knoll Golf Club in Arlington Heights, to help students learn the constellations.
Her success in leading the department can be seen in the numbers: Last year’s average ACT score in English was 27.3 as compared to the state average of 20.3. Additionally, more than 90 percent of students taking the AP exam in English, earned college credit.

Mother Nature tried to wash out the 20th Annual Million Dollar Classic Golf Outing at Wynstone Golf Club on Monday, June 15 but the 120 plus golfers would not let it dampen their spirits or their passion for Saint Viator High School.
