WELCOME

As the Director of Enrollment, I am pleased to welcome you to Saint Viator High School as we celebrate our 60th anniversary. During that time, almost 13,000 young men and women have experienced our commitment to academic excellence and faith formation. Our students go on to transform the world they encounter by remaining engaged in our Catholic, Viatorian mission during their high school years and well beyond. I joined Saint Viator in 2018, after teaching and working closely with middle school students and their families for 17 years. I am a strong believer in the positive impact a Catholic education can make in the lives of our students. Rooted in 60 years of academic excellence, our college preparatory curriculum continues to evolve and innovate as we prepare students to attend leading universities and ultimately launch successful careers in industries and services that can change the world for the next generation. Saint Viator is a welcoming place, and we celebrate our close-knit and supportive community. We hope you join us, whether you want to take advantage of our Shadow Days, Open House, tours, or join us for athletics, arts, and social events throughout the year. As you become familiar with who we are, I believe you will come to understand what it means when we say, “When you’re a Lion, you’re a Lion for life.” Thank you, Chris Bremner Director of Enrollment

WHO WE ARE

Mission, Vision, and Values MISSION Saint Viator High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory community of learning called to provide religious formation and an academic program of excellence to young men and women. — June 1, 2019, Board of Governors

VALUES Catholic Identity

Fueled by the Gospel and nourished by the Eucharist, Saint Viator is ignited to express our Catholic, Viatorian faith through study, prayer, and transformative action. Intellectually, we learn about our faith; communally, we gather around the altar; individually, we are inspired to help others through servant leadership; collectively, we include and embrace people of all backgrounds.

Viatorian Spirituality VISION Deeply rooted in our Catholic identity, we strive to do everything well so that through us Jesus may be adored and loved. Guided by the Viatorian mission, all members of the Saint Viator family discern who God wants them to be, discover what the world needs, and transform the communities they encounter through empathy, action, and inclusion. Saint Viator High School is recognized as an exceptional institution where tradition and innovation meet.

4

Saint Viator commits to the highest standards in integrity, effort, and behavior to best serve our students, families, and society. Through a focus on excellence, dignity, diligence, and equity, we proclaim Jesus Christ and His Gospel and raise up communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated.

Community and Learning

The Saint Viator High School family cultivates an environment of kindness and belonging for all to feel welcomed, included, respected, and involved. We foster success in life and prepare students to excel in college through academic rigor, engaging the intellect, creative collaboration, respect of individuals, embracing diversity and acceptance, and responsibility to oneself and others.

Educating the Whole Person

Saint Viator forms students who are faith-filled, intellectually inspired, ready to serve, and fully engaged in the Viatorian mission. We work to deepen our relationship with Christ, identify our given strengths, and purposefully meet the greatest needs of a diverse society.

FAITH LIFE SAINT VIATOR STUDENTS ARE FAITH-FILLED As has happened for 6 decades, there are many ways Saint Viator students connect with God, find their unique path to living a Christ-centered life, and best determine how they can help serve the needs of society. • • • • • • •

Daily prayer in classroom Teaching from a Christ-centered perspective Monthly all-school Masses Christian service trips Retreats offered throughout the year Clubs focused on Catholic social teachings Being inclusive and welcoming to all

Every day, students will hear the refrain, “Saint Viator, Pray for Us. Adored and Loved Be Jesus.” It is a continual reminder to connect to Gospel teachings and establishes a spiritual framework of ethics, hard work, service, and kindness that guides young men and women through their high school years.

Campus Ministry The Saint Viator Campus Ministry program supports the faith life of students, helping them experience an enriching, transformative, and flourishing Christian life. Students gather to talk, study, pray, connect, and grow together in faith and explore themes of Catholic social justice, service, and how to actively live their faith. Providing Liturgical Experiences Students serve as Eucharistic ministers, ushers, liturgical dancers, lectors, musicians, cantors, and choir members. Retreat Programs The camaraderie and bonds that form among the students during a retreat can be life-changing. The retreat experience provides an ideal opportunity for students to step back from everyday life while exploring their spirituality in a safe and relaxed environment. Retreats include Freshmen Retreat Day, Kairos, Quest, Urban Immersion and other opportunities to pray, reflect, and learn. Kairos Kairos is a 3.5-day retreat led by seniors and campus ministers where the value of Christian faith is lived and celebrated in the community. The purpose of this popular retreat is to help students identify and celebrate where God’s love is active in their lives. Many alumni share their stories of how this retreat was one of the most memorable experiences of their four years at Saint Viator.

Quest Quest is a 24-hour, overnight retreat away from school and home to meet new people and talk about important faith issues. Quest is designed to help freshmen and sophomores discover more about themselves, others, and God. The retreat is led by sophomores under the direction of a campus minister. Urban Immersion This 24-hour retreat at the David Darst Center in Chicago, immerses students into real-world experiences of poverty and injustice. Students analyze and explore their experiences through the lens of Catholic social teaching. This retreat inspires a commitment to serve and a passion for social change.

Saint Viator and Fr. Louis Querbes In 1831, Father Louis Querbes of Lyon, France, established a religious community of young men to assist the clergy in their parish work, especially the teaching of catechism. When Father Querbes was looking for a spiritual model for this group, he recalled Viator, the saint from his home city of Lyon who carried out similar work hundreds of years before.

Saint Viator

7

Saint Viator lived in the fourth century and served as an aide to Bishop Just, helping young people develop their religious beliefs. By public acclamation, both Viator and Bishop Just were declared saints. Now, their legacy lives on through the Clerics of St. Viator. For more than 160 years, Viatorians have proclaimed the Gospel as educators and ministered to the needs of others, lifting up communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated. Saint Viator High School was founded in 1961 in an effort to fulfill the Viatorian commitment to the Christian education of youth.

SERVICE

SAINT VIATOR STUDENTS ARE READY TO SERVE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE The young men and women of Saint Viator High School prepare to transform the world they encounter through the school’s robust service program. Our students learn to understand and identify needs inside and outside of their own communities, and then provide time and energy to make a profound impact in the lives of others. Through this enriching process, students develop their faith, hope, empathy, leadership, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurial thinking to address injustices. By exploring the causes, connections, and consequences of injustice issues our students learn to: • Reflect on these issues through our faith, scripture, Catholic social teaching, and the lived experience of our Viatorian community. • Act and respond to these injustices through direct service or through actions of social change.

12

VIATORIAN SERVICE LEARNING Over their four years at Saint Viator High School, students will complete a total of 65 service hours. There are many agencies and organizations where students show their dedication to serving others including Journeys: The Road Home, SALUTE, INC., Wings, Clearbrook, the Viatorian House of Hospitality, and Feed My Starving Children.

INNOVATION WHERE TRADITION AND INNOVATION MEET While the original footprint of the school that opened in 1961 still provides a classic academic setting, alumni and benefactors have seen to it that the facilities have grown and evolved to meet the needs of new generations of students. A tour of our facility will show original aspects like stained glass windows, the school crest in the lobby, and the illuminated cross atop the school that stands like a beacon to our community. However, over the years, the school has added critical components such as new and advanced science labs, the Marie Gallagher Academic Commons, the Scanlan Center, the Boler Center for athletics, Querbes Dining Hall, new band and choral rooms, and more to provide every student with the finest opportunities to grow academically, spiritually and socially. Our most recent additions include the Klues Family Innovation Center where students collaborate in subject areas such as business, technology, and fine arts, our Counseling Center to help students achieve academic success, discern the right path for college and career options, and seek support for their emotional and psychological well-being, and the newly renovated Murphy Wellness Center where state-of-the-art training equipment is coupled with leading-edge technology to help predict injury risk, track fitness status, establish prehab and rehab assignments, and validate the impact of training for all students and teams.

TRANSPORTATION

STUDENTS FROM FAR AND WIDE TRAVEL TO ATTEND SAINT VIATOR The value of a Saint Viator education attracts students from a large geographic area, with families residing in 66 communities. Our Rev. Mark Francis International Program also welcomed 40 students from six different countries. Whether you are just around the corner or a few towns over, there’s a way to get here. Students commute from miles in every direction — from Crystal Lake, Lake Zurich, Itasca, and Edison Park, utilizing several transportation options including taking the Metra and Train Station Shuttle, the Southwest Shuttle, or arranging for carpooling with the CarpooltoSchool app.

BY SHUTTLE Train Station Shuttle The Train Station Shuttle travels to and from Saint Viator on all school days from the downtown Arlington Heights train station. Students who take eastbound or westbound Metra trains, or who live in the downtown Arlington Heights area, may use this service. The bus leaves the station between 7:35 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. on regular attendance days. After school, the shuttle bus leaves Saint Viator at 3:00 p.m.

Southwest Parishes Shuttle The Southwest Parishes Shuttle is provided before and after school on all regular attendance days to and from the following stops: St. Walter, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Hubert. Shuttle service is dependent on minimum ridership.

BY CAR Saint Viator is easily accessible from many roads and major highways, including I-90, I-53, Route 12, and Route 14. Many Lions find that carpools are the most convenient way to travel to and from Saint Viator. This year, we have partnered with CarpooltoSchool, an online service, to assist families looking to create carpool opportunities.
