Saint Viator High School 2020-21 ANNUAL REPORT
PROUD PAST STRONG FUTURE
ANNUAL REPORT | Letter from the President
Greetings to the Saint Viator Community: It is with great pleasure that I am presented with this first opportunity to address you in my new role as President of Saint Viator High School. Since beginning this role on July 1, I have witnessed first-hand the many people that contribute to helping us achieve our Mission, Vision, and Values on a daily basis. As you can imagine, this past school year provided extraordinary challenges to my predecessor, Brian Liedlich, the administration, staff, and faculty, and particularly the students. With each passing day I learn more about how each of them not only accepted, but overcame, a continual stream of obstacles, challenges, and changes. I am humbled to step into the role of leading this community as we continue to encounter challenges presented by COVID while refusing to compromise on providing an environment of academic excellence and faith formation. Our focus this year must be on the students. As a Saint Viator alumnus, as well as a former faculty member, I have experienced in different ways the importance of a rich and full high school experience. Those four years create a lifetime of memories and friendships along with the academic skills to excel in college and launch successful careers. More than half of our current students have not been able to enjoy that same high school experience. Depending on what year in school they are, they may have spent months eLearning, missed out on Homecoming and Prom, had athletic seasons and fine arts performances cancelled or shortened, and simply lost out on enjoying the freedom and joy of being a teenager. This year we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the opening of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary High Schools. We will be sharing memories, stories, and photos from each decade and invite you to participate. We will also be looking ahead, determining what steps we need to take to ensure another 60 years of success for our school. I will be relying on your support to help us accomplish that. Despite the burden of the COVID pandemic, in the past year we were blessed to receive not only record financial support, but also contributions from alumni who served as mentors in our entrepreneurship class, helped students navigate challenging decisions through our College and Career Connection platform, and managed complicated logistics to help us equip our facility with the right PPE and cleaning materials to remain open for 140 days. In some way each of us has contributed to the history of both Sacred Heart and Saint Viator for the past 59 years. As I begin to serve as President, I look forward to working with you to create a foundation based on tradition and innovation to carry us forward into the next generation beginning with our current students who so richly deserve our support. God Bless,
Rev. Daniel Lydon, CSV ’73 President

| LetterUpdate from Board of Trustee Chair AANNUAL LION FORREPORT LIFE | Student
Dear Alumni, Friends, and Benefactors, It would be easy to look back on the past school year, and even the final quarter of the previous year, and see all that was lost for our students. So many important and once-in-a-lifetime experiences were taken from them, in addition to them having to face a variety of never-expected challenges. For those of us who have been around Saint Viator, it is fascinating to see what was gained. Despite all of the challenges, our administration, staff, faculty, and students, managed to be in school for 140 days of in-person learning - by far the most among area schools. Our students responded with enthusiasm and resilience, excelling in the classroom, winning championships in the athletic opportunities that were presented, staging the annual fall play, musical and dance show on make-shift stages outdoors, and so much more. What was gained was a more profound respect than ever for our dedicated faculty who refused to limit what they could teach despite health protocols, a daily eLearning component, and a new schedule. You responded as well, generously showing greater financial and in-kind support than had ever been achieved before. Collectively, we all added to the rich tradition started by the first class of students at Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Viator six decades ago. Your donations are much appreciated and allow the school to continue growing and innovating. The same is true for those who devoted their time as mentors and volunteers. Every day you make a difference and your commitment is appreciated. The Board of Trustees looks forward to a more traditional school year in 2021-22, but regardless of what challenges are presented, we are emboldened knowing that we have so many of you supporting us and the students who will someday join our ranks as alumni. ANNUAL REPORT | Letter from the Vice President of Development
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” - Coretta Scott King This quote from Coretta Scott King is a perfect summation of what makes the Saint Viator High School family so special. For six decades we have consistently, as a community, been there to assist each other, no matter the need. It is the main trait that makes this Catholic college prep high school more than just an outstanding academic institution, but instead, a true family. During the 2020 - 2021 academic year, our alumni, current and past parents, and friends, rallied around our young Lions as never before. As the pandemic affected schools across the country, forcing many to resort exclusively to virtual learning for their students, our Lions were able to participate in 140 days of in-person learning. The examples of compassion toward our students during the height of the pandemic were numerous. Current parents subsidized the cost of the significant PPE needed to keep our students and faculty safe. Past parents purchased air purifiers and additional equipment to provide a safe learning environment. And of course, alumni generously assisted families in need with the tuition assistance that allowed children to continue on in their Viatorian journey. The generosity and compassion of the Saint Viator family displayed this past year demonstrates that there is no community greater than ours. We are grateful for all you do, and look forward to your continued support of the young women and men entrusted to our care. Your generosity is making a difference—the #ViatorDifference.

ANNUAL REPORT | Letter from the Alumni Relations Office
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, We are only a couple months into the new school year and our freshman students are beginning to create their mark in the 60-year legacy of Saint Viator High School. Alumni and friends have started returning to offices and we are incredibly grateful to host some small in-person events again. We are immensely proud of what our administration, staff, faculty, and students accomplished in the past year despite very adverse conditions. As things return to normal, we have an even clearer understanding of the core of the Saint Viator experience. It’s the five minutes between classes before the bell rings. It’s the shared experience of a busy hallway on the way to a full lunch in Querbes Hall. It’s the quiet moments on retreat or standing shoulder to shoulder at all-school mass. It’s the pit-stop and laughter by your locker throughout the school day. It’s the sweat and tears with teammates and coaches after a long competition. The Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association Board was thrilled to return to some traditional events this fall with our Homecoming tent, class reunions, and Open House. More importantly, we cannot wait to celebrate 60 years of Saint Viator this school year. We hope you can partake in some of the many activities you have missed during this past year. On behalf of the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association and the Office of Advancement, I hope you enjoy this issue of the 2020-2021 Saint Viator High School Annual Report. Be on the lookout for the next A Lion For Life Magazine that provides a continued evolution of our A Lion For Life newsletter. I invite you to not only read each edition, but to contribute by sending your news and updates by email to alumni@saintviator.com. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at an upcoming school or alumni event in 2021-22.

ANNUAL REPORT | Papanicholas Family
A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO CATHOLIC EDUCATION AND SERVICE While Nick Papanicholas, Jr. ’97 is the oldest of four siblings, he is quick to point out that in the family business, Nicholas & Associates, everyone has an important role to play. One of his tasks, perhaps by default, is to serve as spokesperson for the successful firm specializing in general contracting, construction management, and design and build, particularly for schools and school districts. “My siblings tease me that I enjoy the spotlight but I’m ready to step aside anytime one of them wants to step up,” he joked, referring to family members Joe ’98, Tony ’00, and Gina ’03. Much as he does for the successful family business, Nick is also beginning to step forward to represent his alma mater. He is currently in his second year as a member of the Saint Viator High School Board of Trustees and serves as the Chair of the Board’s Building and Grounds Committee. In that role, he works with Director of Building and Grounds Stephan Burks on the management and maintenance of current facilities while casting an eye on the future needs of the school as it heads into its 7th decade. Tony Papanicholas ’00, Joe Papanicholas ’98, Gina Papanicholas Bertolini ’03 and Nick Papanicholas Jr. ’97.
“At Nicholas & Associates we perform much of our work for local school districts and athletic organizations,” Papanicholas said. “I bring brick and mortar experience to meet current needs and share my background in planning, financing and construction to begin addressing future needs.” Nick sees great potential for the future of the school. “The building has great bones, but the modern classroom and the classroom of the future is far different than it was in the 1960’s. The committee and the board will work to identify projects, set priorities, get them to where the finance committee can address financing.” In their professional roles, Nicholas & Associates has already had an impact on Saint Viator and other schools in the area through the construction of the Mount Prospect Ice Arena. Built several years ago and already expanded with the addition of a third sheet of ice, the arena serves the Saint Viator hockey program as well as many other hockey and figure skating clubs and teams. Ice rinks are generally not highly or even marginally profitable, but Nicholas & Associates saw a need for families in the area who were frequently driving long distances for practices and games at odd hours to get ice time that was available and affordable. Beyond just quality ice surfaces, the company kept the overall needs of those families in mind by adding a sit-down restaurant and a 4,000 square foot academic lounge so families could grab a meal and kids could keep up with studies before or after practices and games. It is that kind of imaginative thinking that has Tom Ramsden, Vice-President of Development at Saint Viator excited about the relationship with Nicholas & Associates. “Nick and his family are an amazing example of alumni giving back to our community,” said Ramsden. “Nick is taking his role on the Board very seriously and rolling up his sleeves to get involved in identifying and solving complex issues for our future. We are blessed to have the commitment of the entire Papanicholas family to our students.” That type of commitment was ingrained in the Papanicholas siblings at a young age by Nick, Sr. “Dad passed away at an early age but he was a generous individual,” Nick, Jr. recalled fondly. “He believed in supporting everyone in need. We learned what a magnetic force getting involved can be.” Beyond assistance with construction needs, the Papanicholas family is dedicated to building careers as well. For several years they have held internships for high school and college students.
8
“Kids don’t know what they don’t know, but by giving them opportunities and teaching work skills, the value of networking pays dividends to them later in life. We intend to have our internship program continue to grow in the coming years.” When asked about his Saint Viator experience, no single moment or event stands out to Nick. “Friendships that I forged still exist today. That is not something that everyone experiences. The Saint Viator community is about great families, academics, athletics, social opportunities, and more.”
Mount Prospect Ice Arena constructed by Nicholas & Associates
With four young boys, a long involvement with Saint Viator will continue. “For my wife Katie and I, there has never a doubt that we will send them there.” It’s not hard to imagine that one of those in the next generation of the Papanicholas family will someday be out in front of family and peers, taking on a leadership role and continuing the long and highly valued relationship with Saint Viator High School.
