OVERVIEW
Located approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Saint Viator High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory community of learning called to provide religious formation and an academic program of excellence to young men and women. Guided by the Viatorian mission, all Saint Viator graduates are equipped to discern who God wants them to be, discover what the world needs, and transform the communities they encounter. This is taught in the classroom by encouraging collaboration and innovation. Saint Viator High School is accredited by Advanced Ed and the State of Illinois. It is a College Board, NACAC and IACAC member. Seventy-five percent of Saint Viator High School faculty members hold an advanced degree. Neighboring schools include Prospect, Rolling Meadows, and John Hersey high schools.
RECOGNITION
In 2008 and 2014, Saint Viator High School was selected as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Saint Viator High School has also been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School from 2015 through 2022 for its ongoing commitment to innovation and use of technology to enhance student learning, and was named a Top STEM High School by Newsweek.
STUDENT BODY
The student body consists of 836 students (220 of which are seniors). Our students come from more than 80 feeder schools across the Chicago suburbs. Additionally, our student body includes 54 students (6% of our student body) who are a part of our Reverend Mark R. Francis, CSV, International Program. Approximately one-third of our students receive financial assistance, including 23 students who participate in our Summer Work Study & Internship Program. Together these programs ensure there is a commitment to both socioeconomic and cultural diversity in the halls of Saint Viator High School.
GRADING SCALE AND SCHEDULE
In response to COVID-19 and in an attempt to keep all members of our community safe, on March 16, 2020, Saint Viator pivoted to an eLearning instructional model. During eLearning, students were to check into classes daily before 9:00 a.m., but could complete all course work asynchronous as their home schedules and responsibilities allowed. Finals were not administered (finals typically serve as 20% of a students final grade) and the grading scale was adjusted slightly as displayed below. For the fall of the 2020-2021 school year, Saint Viator pivoted again and is now allowing students the choice of synchronous eLearning or in-person learning. Both options run on an A/B block schedule with classes meeting every other day for 75-minute time periods. Our hope is that block scheduling will allow students to be in smaller cohorts with less passing periods throughout the day. The grading scale will revert back to the normal scale listed below regardless of the instructional model (eLearning or in-person) the student chooses to learn through. Normal Grading Scale for All Terms (Except 2nd Semester of 2019-20) All grades are reported in percentages. Cumulative percentages are calculated at both a weighted and non-weighted level.
Grading Scale
93 - 100% Excellent 85 - 92% Above Average 77 - 84% Average 70 - 76% Below Average 0 - 69% Failure
Weighted Grading
Two factors are used when calculating weighted percentages: 1. A multiplier of 1.094 is used for all Honors and 1.118 is used for Advanced Placement classes. 2. Prior to Fall 2020, 8 points were added to the students weighted GPA for each semester credit taken beyond 3.0 credits per semester. However, this policy no longer exists.
1
2019-20 2nd Semester eLearning Grading Scale
For the second semester of the 2019-20 school year, final semester grades were modified based on this 7-point scale to accomodate the transition to eLearning.
Grading Scale
93 - 100 = 100 85 - 92 = 92 77 - 84 = 84 69 - 76 = 76 61 - 68 = 68 60 and below = NC (no credit) Students with a 60 and below will receive NC (no credit) for the class. If a student did not receive credit for the course, it was not factored into their overall GPA (no numeric impact). If you see a “^ on a transcript from this term, it indicates the raw score was at or above 98% before the eLearning scale was applied.
