a letter from the President Dear Friends: In preparation for the second half of the academic year, I've thought a lot about what made the first semester so special. While the most memorable moments differ for each week, they always remind me of the impact you and the thousands of other alumni and friends have made on our students. It started on Sunday, August 16, when Archbishop Blase Cupich visited Saint Viator to dedicate Fr. Louis Querbes Hall, our new 400-plus seat collegiate-style dining hall, as well as our new state-of-the-art band, choral and visual arts rooms. These facilities would not have been possible without the passionate investors who believe in the mission of Saint Viator High School. The weekends of August 28 and September 11 brought two more special opportunities to witness the impact of the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary alumni. On August 28, we welcomed Saint Viator’s Charter Class of 1965 home, followed by Sacred Heart of Mary’s Premier Class of 1965 on September 11. These men and women are each proud examples of the impact that a Catholic college preparatory education can make on the lives of teenagers. I found it very inspiring to listen to how they followed different paths to make a difference in their respective communities. Thanks to the education they received from the Viatorians and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, each of them is living out God’s mission. Though uniform styles have changed and the curriculum continues to evolve, our tradition of academic excellence in providing our young men and women the finest Catholic college preparatory education remains the foundation of Saint Viator High School, as further solidified with our recent recognition as an Apple Distinguished School in October (see article in next newsletter). It is an education founded in Viatorian and Gospel values, preparing our students to attend the best colleges and universities in the country, while also using their talents to serve the needs of others. Like you, they want to make a positive impact on those around them and on the world. Throughout this annual report we will share stories of the personal impact you are making. This report will provide you with more than academic statistics and financials. You will read real examples of how your investment is making an impact on young men and women, who are in turn making an impact on the world. Thank you for all you do for Saint Viator High School. To say that Saint Viator is a better place because of your pride in and passion for our mission would be an understatement. Thank you for believing, supporting and transforming our world one student at a time. God Bless you and your families. Adored and Loved be Jesus! Peace,
Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V.

building faith Dig Deep
We are a community of believers...
Lifelong Spiritual Growth Alumni Example: an affluent area like Arlington Heights,” she says. “Now, I realize it was a calling from God.”
Beth Cassidy Nabors ’85, draws on her faith formation at St. James School and Sacred Heart of Mary High School, when she reflects on her beginnings at Journeys/The Road Home, a resource center for the homeless in Palatine. “I consider it part of life’s journey, of putting my faith into action,” says Beth. It was 16 years ago that upon returning to Arlington Heights after earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in educational psychology, and working as a substance abuse counselor and later a development director, that her grandmother urged her to apply for a position at the agency which served the homeless in the northwest suburbs. It was a pivotal time, when the agency was merging two nonprofit organizations to offer emergency shelter at faith-based sites, and counseling, case management and vocational services.
“I was coming back home to help strengthen my hometown,” she adds, “not only for those that have homes, but for those who once had homes.” As executive director of Journeys, Beth leads an army of 2,000 volunteers, who live in 37 villages and 10 townships, as well as 18 faith-based shelters and the 70 sister site faith-based locations. Together, they serve approximately 1,000 people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. “I know that it is not me leading, that I am simply a conduit,” Beth says. “I rely on my spiritual upbringing and personal relationship with God to keep me strong and focused, on this large task of strengthening lives and ending homelessness.”
“At the time, I thought I’d do it for my grandmother, and that the volume of need couldn’t be that large in

Visual Arts Sharpen Focus on iPads Through daily prayer and monthly all-school Masses, students are encouraged to define what "faith" means to them on a daily basis. Under the guidance of our campus ministers, students participated in Masses as lectors, cantors, musicians, Eucharistic Ministers, and acolytes. Masses are held throughout the year and are welcome to all family and community members. Students are presented with multiple opportunities to explore their faith on a deeper level. As campus ministry has grown over the past few years, retreats have become a significant component of the Lion experience.
Highlights from last year… • The Freshman Retreat, a one-day, community-building experience, welcomed over 200 freshman retreatants and over 700 family members to the closing mass. • The Quest Retreat was held three times for freshmen and sophomores, serving as a call to love themselves, others and God. • The Bridges Retreat united students with peers from Christo Rey Saint Martin Preparatory in Waukegan to discuss prejudice, stereotypes, and the Christian response to racism and social injustice. • The Kairos Retreat served approximately 92 percent of the senior class. With multiple Kairos retreats per year, this is a special time for students, an opportunity for them to spend four days focusing on Jesus and their response to His message in their own lives.
We are a Community Inspired to Serve Saint Viator's commitment to Christian service reached communities far outside of the northwest suburbs of Chicago last year. Students learned that they have an obligation to the world, completing a minimum of 25 hours, and an average of over 35 hours per student of service to others.
Highlights from last year… • Students served over 350 agencies, including Special Olympics, Catholic Charities, and the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). • Our Make-A-Change weekly collections raised more than $10,000 annually for various charities. • Over 80 students participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, raising over $11,000 for the fight against cancer. • Students raised over $1,000 for Gilda’s Club Chicago, an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community. • Inspired to spread awareness about the injustices taking place under the current North Korean regime, Saint Viator’s Student Rescue Team raised $3,000 to sponsor the rescue of one North Korean refugee.

building life-long learners We live a life of intellectual independence rooted in strong principles and confidence.
Excellence in Education Alumni Example: Anthony Pensa ’11, was a hard working defensive end on the Lions’ 2010 football team who went on to be valedictorian of his 2011 graduating class. However, if his achievements at Saint Viator are any indication, he is not one to rest on his laurels.
“It’s important to me on a personal level,” Anthony said in the article, after watching family members suffer from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. In his first research study on Huntington’s disease, Anthony collaborated with a lab at Harvard, before working with a lab at UC Irvine, on research aimed at inhibiting an enzyme released in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
At Northwestern University, Anthony went on to double major in biological sciences and integrated science, and minor in chemistry. He graduated in May and now attends Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where he continues to earn accolades.
“When I first started at the lab, it was difficult because I’d never done research before,” Anthony told Northwestern reporters. “I had classroom knowledge, but to take what you learn from the classroom and take it to the next level is a hard transition.”
In May, Anthony was profiled as an “innovator” in the summer edition of Northwestern Magazine. The story described his ongoing research in Prof. Richard Silverman’s lab, working on drug design and discovery. Specifically, he’s working on therapeutics for Huntington’s disease and potential drug candidates to target an enzyme associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as cerebral palsy and neuropathic pain.
6
At first, he relied heavily on postdoctoral fellows to get acclimated in the lab, but ultimately he fell back on his educational roots at Saint Viator, which are grounded in excellence and promote a lifelong journey of learning and discovery.
About our students… • Of our 246 graduates, 100% were accepted into a college or university. • Class of 2015 graduates received $25.6 million in collegiate scholarship offers. • Our 26.2 average ACT score was well above the averages of 20.6 for the State of Illinois, and 20.9 in the United States. • The top 25 percent of the class averaged a composite score of 31.8, the middle 50 percent averaged a composite score range of 24-30 and the bottom 25 percent averaged a composite score of 20.3. • 65 students were recognized as Illinois State Scholars. • Eight students were named National Merit Commended Scholars and two students were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. • Members of the Class of 2015 are representing Saint Viator this year at the following U.S. News Top 30 National Universities: • Carnegie Mellon University • Georgetown University • Northwestern University • University of Notre Dame • Washington University in St. Louis

building relationships
We build relationships that span a lifetime
A Committed Community Alumni Example: Chris Efken ’79, enjoys watching her son, Addison ’17, from the stands of the basketball court, but she has been cheering on Saint Viator activities long before she enrolled her son. Currently, Chris co-chairs the Recruitment & Marketing committee, and recently worked with a group of parents to uncork the Wine, Women and Art fundraiser that raised funds to purchase a new kiln as part of the fine arts renovation. But she also leads marketing efforts in implementing open house events, as well as outreach programs for middle school students, such as the Future Lion Day, and the welcome barbeque for incoming freshmen. Approximately 10 years ago, Chris began serving on the Saint Viator High School Board of Trustees for a sixyear term, and as a 1979 alumna of Sacred Heart of Mary, she continues to remain active with the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association.
8
Chris partnered with Kathy Harty ’71, to organize Sacred Heart’s 50th anniversary Mass and luncheon, and she continues to work on a variety of Saint Viator events, from the Athletic Booster Club’s Trivia Night, and the student EKG tests, to the school’s largest fundraiser, the Night of the Lion gala. So what drives her? “I just started pitching in, and I found that getting involved was contagious,” says Chris, who is a marketing expert, specializing in qualitative research strategy, and is an adjunct instructor at Columbia College in Chicago, teaching marketing, consumer behavior and marketing research. “I was saddened when Sacred Heart closed its doors, but the merging of the two schools seemed like a natural fit, since I always considered the two schools to be separate, but unified,” she adds. “I felt obligated to do my part to ensure Saint Viator retains its tradition of excellence and that our unified community thrives.”
Saint Viator is blessed to serve a community of alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends who are supportive and committed to the future of our school. The time, money and effort spent by all allows us to keep our doors open and classrooms full. Among all current and alumni parents, those involved in the Athletic Booster Club, Patrons of the Arts, and the Parents’ Club greatly contribute to our successful events and fundraisers every year. A sample of our community events in 2014-2015 included: • Viator Open • Fall Concert • Fall Play, “The 99-Minute Romeo and Juliet” • Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony • Musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” • Run With the Pride 5K • Trivia Night • 10th Anniversary Night of the Lion • 20th Annual Million Dollar Classic • Alumni Reunions, including the Premier Class of 1964 \We extend our sincerest appreciation for your contributions to Saint Viator High School. Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to advance the Viatorian mission of Fr. Louis Querbes, to “...raise up communities, where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated.”

Sacred Heart of Mary High School’s Premier Class of 1965 Celebrates its Milestone 50th Reunion
For the premier class of Sacred Heart of Mary High School, it was an anniversary to remember. Last September, the class of 1965 celebrated its 50th reunion, and they made a weekend of it. Approximately 40 percent of the living class members returned to the area for their milestone gathering. “We were a part of something so special,” said Roseann Bianca Gillig ’65, alumni representative. “Our reunion gave us a chance to talk about our past 50 years and where our education has taken us. “We were introduced to an education that was bar none,” she added, “and I was so fortunate and blessed to have been there.” They gathered Friday, September 11 at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in Schaumburg for an opening reception. On Saturday, they circled around the Our Lady of the Moon statue, which formerly stood in the courtyard of Sacred Heart of Mary and now stands prominently in front of Saint Viator High School, for a prayer service before heading up to the Alumni Memorial Chapel for a Mass. “I was so proud to celebrate Mass with these women,” said Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V., President. “They are strong, faith-filled women and serve as great role models for today’s Lions.” After Mass, the crowd returned to the Hyatt Regency for their formal reunion dinner. In attendance were two members of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Sr. Gabrielle Corbally and Sr. Mary Alice Young.
Catholic high school in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. When Sacred Heart opened in the fall of 1961, classes were held in a wing of Saint Viator High School, and they would remain there for the first two years until the facility in Rolling Meadows was finished. “I think that being the first class to go through was instrumental in keeping us close,” said Mary Jeanne Reynolds Kedzior ’65. Gillig pointed to the Sacred Heart sisters, who set the tone for the school and its education, by teaching its students to appreciate and respect the world around them. “They introduced us to an education that opened many doors in my life, and to this day I am grateful,” Gillig added. “For one thing, they introduced a deep love for my faith that I carry with me today.” When Sacred Heart merged with Saint Viator in 1987, its graduates lost their building, but gained an alumni association that helps to keep alive the spirit of the school and supports its members. “Saint Viator has been great to us and we should all be grateful that the we have somewhere to call home,” Gillig added. Rhonda Starr ’87, a member of Sacred Heart’s last graduating class, now serves on the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association Board. “I do have a dream,” Starr said, in addressing the reunion gathering. “My dream is that every one of you will believe it when we say, welcome home.”
The religious order, based in Tarrytown, NY, responded to a call from the Archdiocese of Chicago to open a girls’ 10

More than 14,500 graduates have gone through Saint Viator High School and Sacred Heart of Mary high schools since 1961, but only one class claims the right of being first.
During their senior year, class members dedicated their yearbook to their class moderator, Fr. Daniel Mirabelli, C.S.V., who had started the Pride Club, which is now the Ambassadors’ Club, and had instilled in them a sense of school spirit.
The class of 1965 calls themselves the “Charter Class” and they gathered in August for their 50th reunion. “The day we started freshman year, was the day the school opened,” said Mark Condon ’65, who helped plan their reunion. “We were the first class to go all four years at the school.”
“The reality is, we had great Viatorian mentors,” said Dick Helmer ’65. Some of those Viatorian mentors were on hand for the reunion weekend, including Fr. Arnold Perham, C.S.V., the first chair of the mathematics department who still tutors at the school, as well as Fr. John Milton, C.S.V., the first chair of the science department, and Fr. James Michaletz, C.S.V., a chemistry teacher who would go on to serve as an administrator at both Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary high schools.
Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V., President, celebrated Mass with the group at the opening of the milestone weekend, in the Alumni Memorial Chapel. “Thank you for coming home,” he told the group that included over 85 guests from around the country. Their opening night also included a tour of the high school, with the alumni able to see all of the latest enhancements, including the new Fr. Louis Querbes Hall, the updated fine arts facilities, the Marie Gallagher Academic Commons and Scanlan Learning Center.
At a formal dinner for the class, Fr. Corey Brost described how the Viatorians had purchased 80 acres of farmland back in 1950. They established a novitiate in the original farmhouse, before building their province center, and ultimately constructing the school, after responding to a request from the Archdiocese of Chicago. Br. Leo Ryan, C.S.V., the last surviving member of the building committee, designed the school.
But many areas of the school, still in its original footprint, looked familiar. “Just seeing the chapel and the Cahill Gym, the memories come back,” said Chuck Heinrich ’65. “We never had names for these places. We’d walk in and there were buckets of paint. In 1961, this place was still under construction.”
“You were responsible for laying the foundation of many of today’s traditions,” Fr. Brost told the crowd of more than 130 guests at the dinner. “More than 14,500 alumni and 930 current students are walking on your shoulders.”
Others remembered their teachers and administrators, nearly all of whom were Viatorian priests and brothers. They fondly recalled Fr. Paul Gilgallon, who started the school’s chorus and musical, before demonstrating field 11
“Please know that each of you have set an example for those that came after you,” he added. “You took the lessons learned during your four years at Saint Viator and you are doing God’s work in your own way.”
Archbishop Cupich Dedicates Querbes Hall
"The archbishop just said he'd wear that jacket and hat when he visits Carmel," Fr. Corey joked after gifting Archbishop Cupich the spiritwear.
Saint Viator High School New Facilities Completed Archbishop Blase Cupich made his second visit to Saint Viator High School this year, and he felt so at home that he donned a baseball cap, and accepted a shirt and bag, all adorned with the Lion logo. “He’s a Lion for Life,” said Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V., President, in presenting the archbishop with gifts, “and he’s committed to Catholic education.” The Chicago archbishop headlined a dedication and prayer service held to celebrate the completion of a $3 million renovation of its fine arts facilities and the multi-media, college-styled dining facility, the Fr. Louis Querbes Hall. In thanking the Viatorian Community and individual investors on hand for investing in the school and its mission, Cupich described their partnership as a “great enterprise” and one that gives young students a “very hopeful outlook on the world.” “I really do find that Catholic education, especially at the secondary level, is a top priority,” Cupich said. “We need to bond together in ways that make it possible for many families to enjoy the great privilege of schools like Saint Viator.” Many of the Viatorians who served as teachers and administrators were on hand for the dedication, including Br. Leo V. Ryan, C.S.V., a former president of the school and the last living member of the building committee — made up of Viatorians — to design the school. “It’s spectacular,” Br. Ryan said. “And I like how it’s tuned into all the latest technology. It will really help carry students into the 21st century.” Many of the investors on hand for the dedication supported the capital campaign, despite not having any students at the school any longer. “Our kids had a tremendous experience here. Viator not only prepared them for college, but it has carried through their professional lives,” said Jack Klues of Arlington Heights. “And when you combine all the spirit and commitment of the Viatorians, we had to support this.” 12

Tod Faerber ’76, a member of the Board of Trustees, agreed. The youngest of his four children, Joe, graduated in 2014, but he continues to work for the school. “This is great,” he said looking around the new Querbes Hall. “Anything that we can do to prepare these students for college and beyond, I’m all for.” The completion of Querbes Hall and the fine arts facilities brought a close to the school’s Shaping the Future with Faith Campaign, a four-year, $14 million undertaking, with major building improvements and an increased endowment fund, all made possible by generous donors. “Today is the culmination of a long journey,” Fr. Brost added, “that will provide facilities that will enhance the educational experience for each student here and for generations to come. “We have also increased our endowment, from $8 million to $10 million,” he added, “to allow more families to experience the transformative power of a Saint Viator education.” Archbishop Cupich toured the new facilities with students and Fr. Corey after giving them his blessing.

Last fiscal year Saint Viator provided our generous alumni, parents, past parents and friends a new way to support our young Lions through the Viator Foundation. We developed a program that allows you to direct your gift to the area that you have the most passion. Our investors, as you can see from the length of this annual report, liked this opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young adult through the specific programs that they have the most passion for. We are very grateful to the thousands of individuals who grasped the idea of the In the Spirit of Giving campaign and supported the Viator Foundation and our Lions. Again this year, our investors can chose to direct their gifts to one of six different areas: • Scholarship & Grants – This year we have budgeted to provide over 30% of our student body with aid totaling more than $1.4 million. Your gift in this area will ensure that a student in need will be able to benefit from the Saint Viator experience. • Technology – Saint Viator has always prided itself on remaining on the cutting edge of educational technology, as proved by recently being named an Apple School of Distinction. A gift in this area will allow us to continue that tradition. • Athletics – Our teams are extensions of the classroom. Our student athletes are known for their hard work, respect and sportsmanship - along with championships! Your gift in this area will assist in making sure all of our teams have the resources they need. • Fine Arts – As students enjoy their new facilities this year, our Fine Arts programs continue to allow hundreds of students to showcase unique talents and build confidence that assists them in other areas as well as everyday life. Your gift to this area will provide the opportunity for students to continue to discover their respective talents. • Faculty Development – The administration is committed to supporting our faculty - who view their roles as a vocation, not a job - in continuing education. Providing them the support they deserve also allows us to continue to strengthen our academic program. • General Fund – A gift in this area allows us to use your donation to satisfy a variety of needs for our young Lions. Your support of the General Fund will provide for the whole student.

McKenna Marketplace A decision by Richard and Lucille McKenna, back in 1988, to send the first of their two sons to a Catholic high school, continues to pay big dividends for Saint Viator High School. The couple and their younger son, Doug, and his family were on hand August 16 for the dedication of Querbes Hall, the expanded fine arts facilities and the new McKenna Marketplace. The shop replaces the former bookstore, and constitutes Saint Viator’s first online store. It features an array of adult and youth apparel, including uniform shirts, spirit wear and accessories, in its high visibility location next to the dining facility. It was named for Richard and Lucille McKenna, and their sons, Greg ’92, and Doug ’97, and their families. The name of the marketplace reflects the family’s generous donation and support of the Shaping the Future with Faith capital campaign. "The McKennas are longtime investors in our mission,” says Tom Ramsden, Saint Viator development director. “Long after their younger son graduated in 1997, they continue to make a difference.” “There are many alumni and current students that have been able to attend Saint Viator,” he adds, “because of their generosity.” Both Richard and Lucille McKenna grew up in the New York City area, and are the product of Catholic education, from grammar school and high school through college. “Rich and I strongly believe in the mission of Catholic schools,” Lucille McKenna says, “but we know that tuition alone cannot sustain these schools.” Professionally, Rich McKenna retired in 2009 as president of Gallagher Bassett Services and he now serves as Chief Operating Officer of Christian Brothers Services. Lucille McKenna taught first grade in the Chappaqua, New York public school system, before staying home to raise her sons. She remained active in volunteering, however, and while her sons attended Saint Viator, she served as president of the Parents’ Club. Those experiences served as a springboard for her to serve on the board of trustees of Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, IN, where the couple also have made generous donations. Their contributions are reflected in the McKenna Library and McKenna Arena. Together, Rich and Lucille continue to serve on the Institute for Church Life and the advisory council for the Center for Social Concerns, both at the University of Notre Dame. They also have endowed a McKenna Family Scholarship at the university. “We believe that our contributions to such institutions can make a difference,” Lucille McKenna adds. “Both of our sons benefited greatly from their education at Saint Viator, and we are committed to help make that possible for other students.” In fact, Greg and Doug McKenna earned degrees from the University of Notre Dame, before attending law school. They both now work as attorneys for Gallagher Bassett Services, where Greg is vice president and council for the company’s governmental affairs unit, while Doug is a senior resolution specialist. “This gift to the Shaping the Future with Faith campaign is another example of their family wanting to make an impact in other young adults' lives,” Ramsden adds. “Like many generous alumni families, Saint Viator is a better place because of the McKenna family."
