St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019
Celebrating 75 Years
It is the mission of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School to develop students to their fullest potential in an environment permeated with
Gospel values.
Letter
from the
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of SVdP, It is with tremendous gratitude that we present St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School’s 20182019 Annual Report. This is more than a list of names, but a celebration of the families who have helped make St. Vincent’s the best it can be for our students. In 2018-2019, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the school, looking back at photos and sharing stories of our past. Take a look at this history on pages 18-23. Repeatedly, we saw the pattern of families coming together to work and raise funds for each new chapter at SVdP – constructing the intermediate school building in 1948, the primary building and gym in 1953, and the middle school and library in 1992.

Now, we are raising funds for our next transformation – a new Catholic Education Building to house two-thirds of our classrooms. It will be the greatest transformation our campus has seen and I am so pleased with the positive response to this very important campaign. I hope this Annual Report not only gives a clearer snapshot of our financial position, but also underscores the vital role our donors play in the ongoing success of our school. We simply could not do it without you. Yours In Christ, Carolyn Sears, M.Ed. Principal

Philanthropy Proceeds from our two fundraising efforts – the Annual Fund and PTO’s Auction and Gala – provide critical resources for SVdP’s annual operations and allow us to say, “yes” to unbudgeted opportunities that are beneficial for our students. We are incredibly thankful to the hundreds of donors and volunteers who help to make SVdP the best it can be for our students.

We are also grateful for the example that these philanthropic efforts provide for the students of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
St. Vincent's Annual Fund
THE ANNUAL FUND FOR ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CATHOLIC SCHOOL
St. Vincent’s Annual Fund is our opportunity to come together as a community to make our school the best it can be. It is the most important appeal we make to our community each year and it is the cornerstone of our advancement program.
What does the Annual Fund do?
Gifts to the Annual Fund touch every aspect of the school. First, funds raised ensure ongoing support of the operating budget. That means we can provide competitive salaries and benefits, updated curriculum and classroom materials, and maintenance of our campus.
Second, the Annual Fund enables us to offer all the “extras” that make our school exceptional. This includes things like: • Enhanced safety - A full-time security officer on campus • Advanced technology – 1:1 Chromebooks for all middle school students, and classroom sets for 4th and 5th grades • Updated curriculum – middle school Math curriculum and Spanish textbooks • Professional development for teachers – STEM training by the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE) With minimal expenses to run the Annual Fund, your gift makes the most immediate and direct impact on our students.

Community
Grateful for this Active, Supportive Community
In addition to our Annual Fund, St. Vincent’s enjoys the support of many who give to the Adopt-aStudent Fund, to our endowment, or through community-building events led by volunteers.
Adopt-a-Student
Adopt-a-Student is our “rainy day fund” for current school families who encounter a financial crisis. The fund provided about $50,000 of assistance to SVdP school families in 20182019. Thank you to the many altruistic parents and parishioners who support this program each year.
Endowment
St. Vincent’s established an endowment for operational expenses in 2014 with the intent of using the interest income to offset tuition for future generations of students. The money is invested through the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the endowment's future income will serve as an additional revenue stream for the SVdP school budget aside from tuition and fundraising.
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
St. Vincent’s PTO is a social, service and fundraising organization for parents of St. Vincent’s students. Its volunteers work year-round to provide meaningful community-building events and services for SVdP families, like the Buddy Family program, Back to School, Book Fair, Breakfast with Santa, the Auction and Gala, Cabrini Festival, Career Fair, Performing Arts assistance, "Power of One" Week, the Room Parent program, Tiger Bucks, Tiger Apparel, Used Uniforms, Hospitality for various events, and the Tiger's Roar yearbook. The PTO’s primary fundraiser, the Auction and Gala, held in February 2019, raised $180,000 for improvements to the school. In addition to continuing its long tradition of funding the faculty and staff Christmas and retention bonuses, the PTO provided the following improvements for the school in 2018-2019: • New books and reading incentive programs for the Library • New movable and flexible desks and chairs for middle school St. Vincent’s is grateful for our parents, and the passion and energy they put forth to make our school the best it can be for our students. We are especially grateful for the leadership of Mrs. Allison Sovany as the 2018-2019 PTO President.

Dads Club
The SVdP Dads Club is a social and service organization for dads of St. Vincent’s students. In 2018-2019, the Dads Club volunteered to support the school, parish, and community in the following ways: • Hosting the back-to-school BBQ • Delivering emergency water for all the classrooms • Repairing and rebuilding the community garden • Setting up and tearing down at the parish’s FunFest • Helping at Breakfast with Santa and Steps for Students • Purchasing and building a gaga-ball pit on the playground • Hosting the annual golf tournament • Organizing SVdP's first skeet shoot activity • Assisting with tear-down and clean-up after Spring Musical We are especially grateful for the leadership and service of Mr. Ray Simpson, the 20182019 Dads Club President.
Steps for Students
Steps for Students is an annual Archdiocesan-wide event where school and parish communities come together to support Catholic education. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of a Catholic education and provide much-needed resources for our Catholic Schools. SVdP's Coach Marion Jones has played an integral role in the development of this event over the years. In February 2019, the SVdP team raised $5,000 to support inner-city Catholic schools. Special thanks goes to Coach Marion Jones and Mr. Raffaele Sepe for enthusiastically leading this effort.

STEM Certification
1st STEM-Certified Catholic School in the USA
On Tuesday, May 21, 2019, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School celebrated being named a STEM-certified school by the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE). SVdP is the first school in Houston and the very first Catholic school in the nation to earn this certification! STEM teaching sounds like it all happens in the science lab, but it is really a way of engaging students in order to develop unique cognitive skills, habits of mind, and attitudes that will benefit learners throughout their lives. STEM teaching is project-based and inquiry-based learning that is applied across subjects and grade levels. It is teaching children to think deeply, ask questions and work together. Our teachers can even apply these teaching techniques in English, Social Studies, and Religion.
1992 14
Many, many hours of work this school year went into earning this authentic STEM certification through NISE. Congratulations to our SVdP faculty for their dedication to improving their skills to benefit our students. We especially thank Mrs. Brindley Drake and the eight faculty and staff on her team who earned their STEM teacher certifications, including: Mrs. Sarah Bain, Mrs. Amy Harwell, Mr. Scott Kloesel, Mr. Scott Muckelroy, Mrs. Taylor O’Brien, Mrs. Kelly Pepper, Ms. Megan Rohan, and Mrs. Danielle Thorpe. Thanks to our Annual Fund donors who made this experience possible!

75th Anniversary History of SVdP Catholic Church and School 1940s
In 1939, St. Anne’s parish was split to alleviate crowding and the southern section became St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. A new church and rectory were built in 1941 and the church quickly established a school for the children of the parish. In 1943, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School opened with 165 students. The campus included four temporary classrooms in army barracks that would later be bricked to form permanent classrooms. There were four teaching Sisters from the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. The Mothers' Club was formed to obtain enough gas ration stamps for the cars and buses needed to transport students to and from the school. The only building that remains from the 1940s is the current intermediate building.
1950s and 1960s
The 1950s and 1960s brought major construction to SVdP's campus. Additional land was acquired along Buffalo Speedway and a parish-wide campaign began for the construction of new facilities. The current church was built in 1953, followed by the rectory, gym, cafeteria, and primary school building in 1958 that we still use today.
18
1970s
The 1970s brought the community together again to raise funds for the parish and school through raffle ticket sales, parish bazaars and the annual “The Great Garage Sale.” The first of the parish bazaars, now called FunFest, were held in the horseshoe parking lot outside the family center. In 1974, the bazaar was moved to the football field. Parishioners recall helping to push cars out of the mud in the empty parking lot across the street where the Randall’s shopping center now stands.
19
75th Anniversary History of SVdP Catholic Church and School 1980s
The early 1980s was a lean time for SVdP and the school came close to closing. Volunteers remember comparing the weekly offering to the outstanding bills and prioritizing bills to keep utilities on. Teachers were not always paid. In 1981, the first formal school board was elected by the parish and the accounting books were formalized. In 1985, Monsignor James A. Jamail became the fifth pastor and Ginny Malloy became the school principal. Together they began a period of rebuilding the finances for the church and school.
1990s
The 1990s was a period of fundraising with major additions to the parish campus reminiscent of the parish fundraising and growth of the 1950s. In 1992, the current middle school, library, scout house, maintenance building, and administration buildings were built and all parish buildings were renovated. At the same time, new green plaid uniforms were added for the school children. In 1996, the current Monsignor Jamail family center was added.
20
2000s
Monsignor Jamail led SVdP into the new millennium and left the parish in a much better position than when he began 17 years earlier. In 2000, the church was expanded with a new gathering space, baptismal area, and additional seating, and Mary Getschow took over as principal. Msgr. Jamail passed away in 2002 and Fr. John Weyer became the sixth pastor. Fr. Weyer passed away in 2008 and Monsignor Bill Young became the seventh pastor in 2009.
21
75th Anniversary History of SVdP Catholic Church and School 2010s
In 2010, Monsignor Bill carried forward Fr. Weyer’s plans of a campaign with multiple building projects around campus, including a new daily Mass chapel. The campaign fell short of its goal and to avoid going into significant debt, the parish prioritized the most pressing needs. The gym, cafeteria, and interior of the church were renovated. Additional seating was added to the church with a new western transept. The students ate lunch in the MJFC during the cafeteria construction and the parish celebrated Mass in the MJFC while the church floor was under construction. In 2013-2014, the Tiger Patio outside the cafeteria was dedicated and a time capsule was buried for the 70th anniversary of the school. In 2016, SVdP was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. In spring 2017, the Legacy Wall mosaic was completed and dedicated, and a new Rectory was built thanks to a generous donation made specifically for this purpose. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded the primary building, library, computer lab, vestment hallway, and administration building. Volunteers helped with the recovery and classrooms were temporarily moved into the family center.

The Future
The Next Chapter... Building Bright Futures
This year, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the school and began a new chapter in our history – one that is reminiscent of what we have done over and over again at SVdP. We are fundraising for our next transformation – a new Catholic Education Building to replace our 70-year-old intermediate building. The new Catholic Education Building will be built with light and bright classrooms with flexible space and movable furniture. It will facilitate the teaching strategies of today, instead of 1948. It will be used for day-school students and CCE students six days a week so that we may continue our good work of raising disciples for Christ who love learning and love the Lord. Our goals are challenging, but achievable. Please join us as we write the next chapter for St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and School.
