FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear St. Vincent de Paul Parents, Every year, the St. Vincent de Paul School Board and I have the tough job of determining tuition for the next school year. While we give every consideration to how we can keep tuition low for each family, some of the cost increases the school faces are out of our control. As mentioned in the school's Weekly Newsletter (dated 1/13/17), the increasing cost of health care and pensions paid for full-time employees is the largest factor for the increase in tuition for the 20172018 school year. These increases are determined by the Archdiocese, over which we have no control. In order to retain or attract top-tier teachers, we must be competitive with surrounding schools. When teachers decide which school they will call home, health care and pension benefits are a primary consideration. The environment is very competitive for leading teachers from National Blue Ribbon schools and thus SVdP offers full benefits as an incentive to retain our superior staff. The average tenure of our teachers is 18 years, with many of these teachers watching your children grow with you.

As a reminder, we still offer the multi-family discount, which many schools have discontinued. Furthermore, the Archdiocese offers tuition assistance; more information on this with deadlines for applying can be found at www.choosecatholicschools.org. While tuition covers a majority of the operating costs for the staff and students of SVdP, other ways we are able to mitigate the rising cost of a quality Catholic education is through the generous parish subsidy, funds raised by the PTO and the Annual Fund. Without these critical elements, the increase in tuition would be far greater. In addition to up-to-date information regarding tuition, I would like to mention some additional changes affecting the 2017-2018 school year's calendar. Important dates: - Monday, 08/14: First day of school - Saturday, 10/28 – Sunday, 10/29: Fun Fest - Monday, 10/30: Fun Fest holiday - Friday, 11/17: Grandparents Day
- Monday, 11/20 – Friday, 11/24: Thanksgiving - Thursday, 12/21: 2 PM release for Christmas break - Friday, 12/22 – Friday, 1/05: Christmas break - Monday, 01/08: Students return to school - Monday, 02/05 – Friday, 02/09: Accreditation visit Early Release / Instructional days: In the past, a handful of days each year have been half days (early release days), often with a special program following Mass. Starting in the 2017-2018 school year, the Archdiocese is mandating a change in the way instructional days are counted. In order to comply with this mandate, SVdP will no longer have half days with 11:00 AM dismissal. On days with special programs, we will release at 2:00 PM, following Mass and the special program. These days should not be confused with early dismissal days, which will remain on the calendar, typically on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. This change will also impact Parent-Teacher Conference days. Conference schedules are still being developed, so be on the lookout for how these days will be handled for the 2017-2018 school year. A full school year calendar will be published in February and available via the school's website. RenWeb: Starting next year, SVdP will use RenWeb for almost all school and emergency communications with parents. If you have not already done so, please make sure you have access to this important portal. Under the "Family Information" section, there is an area where multiple family members can list their email address to ensure no family misses out on happenings throughout the school year. While the 2017-2018 school year will see some changes, it is my hope that the families of SVdP find that these changes run smoothly, and that the advance communication helps with the transition. I would like to thank the Board for their careful consideration of all the factors that went into their decision about tuition. I look forward to next year and all the joy and growth it brings. Yours in Christ, Carolyn Sears M.Ed.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming “A Night to Bond” Auction and Gala on February 11th. Auction is the biggest social event of the school year, and the PTO’s most important fundraiser. Many, many thanks to our Auction Directors, Allison Sovany and Christina Lynch, and to their dedicated Auction Committee members. Due to their collective efforts, “A Night to Bond” will grant our faculty and parent community the opportunity to come together for a night of celebration for our beloved school. Please consider nominating yourself or a friend for a 2017-2018 PTO Board position! The nomination process will begin shortly with an online survey. It’s anonymous, so please do not be shy about nominating yourself! Thank you, PTO Past President, Kelly Hogan, and the Nominating Committee, for ensuring that this is a fair, smooth process. The volunteerism present in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School community is impressive. Volunteering offers a tremendous opportunity to meet new friends – those whose children are in other grades and who we may not otherwise meet. Since the last issue of Tiger’s Mouth was published, we have had many events and services organized by the PTO. Thank you to the Directors and committee members of the following: * Power of One: Thank you, Enrichment Director Elizabeth Keeler for helping children make positive, healthy choices and teaching ways to stand up against bullying, drugs, alcohol * Book Fair: Rachel Bush and Elizabeth Quattrucci co-directed this beloved event supporting SVdP’s library. “Be the Change” earned over $5,300 for the library, plus over 500 new books were donated to the library, classrooms, and counselors for SVdP students’ use. * Grandparents’ Day and Christmas Program: PTO Performing Arts Director Olguita Santiago Rodriguez provided volunteer coordination and production assistance for these fantastic School-sponsored events. * Breakfast with Santa: Shannon Sweeney organized “Breakfast with Santa in a Tropical Paradise” to begin the Christmas season with a morning full of crafts, breakfast, and great shopping. Thank you to Santa for making the trip from the North Pole for some photos, to the Knights of Columbus for serving a delicious breakfast, and to the SVdP Choir for lending their beautiful voices. * Christmas Gift Collection: Thank you, Room Parent Coordinator Claire Saks-Iverson, for spearheading the Christmas Gift Collection for our faculty and staff. In addition to the Christmas bonuses that the PTO provided, a monetary Christmas gift was also given to our wonderful faculty and staff, thanks to the generous contributions from SVdP families. Please mark your calendars for Cabrini Festival (March 7-9), where we will focus on Ireland. Style Show (May 7) will honor the 8th grade class and it is open to the entire school community to attend.

AN INCREDIBLE STORY Eighth grade students at SVdP read The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez as part of their summer reading requirement. In the book, the 14year-old narrator tells the story of her journey from Cuba to America as part of Operation Pedro Pan, an organized exodus of more than 14,000 unaccompanied children whose parents sent them away to escape Fidel Castro's revolution. Not only did the eighth grade students communicate with the author via Skype, but student Cole Patrick's grandfather Julio Rodriguez-Cayro one of the Operation Pedro Pan children--gave a presentation about his experience to the class, including his relocation to Nebraska for one year.
LET’S DISSECT SOMETHING Students who are in the Global Doctors elective (8th grade) work with a company called Level Up Village. Level Up Village (LUV) delivers pioneering Global STEAM (STEM+ Arts) enrichment courses that promote design thinking and one-to- one collaboration on real-world problems between K-9 students at more than 150 schools in the U.S. and over 30 Global Partner organizations in 20+ countries. In Global Doctors: Anatomy students explore the intricacies of human body systems through real animal specimen dissections. As “global doctors,” they dissect specimens such as a frog, grasshopper, earthworm, snake and shark. Students learn about their global partner’s daily lives and discuss the global diseases that affect specific body systems. Our students for the Spring elective are paired with students from the country of

Ghana. Students will interact with their Global Partners throughout the course via project collaboration and the exchange of video messages using Level Up Village’s Global Collaboration Platform - an easy-to- use and secure portal. These guided interactions allow students to share their findings, learn about each other’s lives and discuss the real-life application of their learning. The result is meaningful global collaboration and an enhanced understanding of the world. By participating in this course, St. Vincent de Paul; will be sponsoring STEAM education in the developing world through LUV’s “Take a Class, Give a Class” model. A portion of tuition will be used to donate the same course and all supplies to our Global Partner(s).
BE THE CHANGE BOOK FAIR SVdP recently promoted literacy with its "Be the Change" Book Fair 2016, chaired by Rachel Bush and Elizabeth Quattrucci. Authors Marcie Colleen, Cathey Graham Nickell, Caroline Leach, Christy Rost, Wade Smith and 5 year old author, Ajay Shah delighted students with evening visits at Barnes & Noble while actors stood by in the Children's section to offer dramatic readings of favorite stories. Wade Smith, a 12-year NFL veteran, Houston Texans Pro Bowler and Dallas native, recently published his first children's book, Smitty Hits the Playbooks, based on his personal experiences.

THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM WAS AMAZING SVdP students and faculty presented the annual Christmas Program on December 16, 2016. Surrounded by heavenly hosts, the students sang carols and the band, bell choir and drum line performed. The return of the silent monks miming the Hallelujah Chorus and the debut of the impish elves added to the fun. The program concluded with a live nativity scene surrounded by angels, shepherds tending their flocks at night and wise men who followed the star to Bethlehem.

LETTER TO PARENTS:
NAEP 2017 PARENT/GUARDIAN NOTIFICATION LETTER for St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School Mathematics and reading assessments Dear Parent or Guardian: We are pleased to notify you that St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School has been selected to represent private schools across the nation by participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). First administered in 1969, NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in public and private schools know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from state and school assessments because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public. Your child will take a mathematics or reading assessment on Friday, February 17, 2017. The assessment also asks students questions about their daily routine and their educational experiences. For example, students are asked if there is a computer at home and about the amount of reading they do. Student responses are anonymous, and they provide context and meaning to the assessment results. Please visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/booklets.asp to review sample questions. The assessment takes about 90 to 120 minutes for most students. The results are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347). The information collected is used for statistical purposes only. * Your child’s grades will not be affected. * Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question. * While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by February 3, 2017.
There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP, but please encourage your child to do their best. A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/ parents/2012469.pdf. Contact Scott Kloesel at 713-666-2345 or email at skloesel@svdp-edu.org if you have any questions. To learn more about private school participation in NAEP visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/nonpublicschools.asp. We are excited that our school is participating in NAEP and pleased that your child has been selected. We know that SVdP's students will show what our nation’s students know and can do. In Christ, Scott Kloesel Assistant Principal

What is Steps for Students? Steps for Students is an annual archdiocesan-wide event where all school and parish communities can come together as one to support Catholic education. The goal of Steps for Students is to raise awareness of the importance of a Catholic education and provide much needed resources for our Catholic Schools. This day of family fun includes a 5k USA Track and Field Association sanctioned race and Post Race Party. What does Steps for Students support? Registrants have the opportunity to join a school team, designate their registration fee minus $3 race entry-processing fee to that school and solicit pledges designated for that school. The Archdiocesan Tuition Assistance Program is a commitment that the Archdiocese makes to keep Catholic schools accessible, available and affordable to all families. This commitment is the hallmark of our faith and service in regards to the educational mission of the Church. With 61 schools, serving over 18,000 students, the network of Catholic Schools is the largest private school system in the state of Texas. Volunteer Information Volunteers are a vital part of the success of the race! Race Day takes over 200 volunteers working together to ensure a safe and memorable event for all.
