01 INVESTIGATING ART GALLERI ES
The brief was to create an Art Gallery at Labrador Park, with an emphasis on materiality. When researching different types of artwork, I saw that there were different ways to approach different works, and was interested in the activation of the spaces around the artworks by movement. In paintings and video installations, people tended to move back and forth, closely inspecting the work or sitting back to take everything in. Patrons tended to walk around smaller sculptures and installations. These spaces become transitory areas with lots of movement. Lastly, bigger installations require large spaces that engulf the viewer, a grand gesture that makes a person feel small within the space. These different conditions would inform the spaces of my gallery.

02 ABOUT THE SITE
While my peers were more interested in what was going on in Labrador Park, our chosen site in this brief, I was more interested in the entrance to Labrador Park. Berlayer Creek, a mangrove area with an existing boardwalk, extends from Labrador Park to the MRT station, providing an excellent transition space one could walk through to the Park. However, this pathway is hidden from viewers due to the placement of MRT exits and structures in the area. Finding the route to Labrador Park becomes confusing to potential visitors of the Park. This is a good space to locate an Art Gallery as it could function as a landmark that encourages people to venture into the boardwalk and enter Labrador Park.
03 DESIGN PROCESS
1 This is the experimental stage of my design, where I brainstorm possible avenues for design. I started the design process by designing the experience I wanted people to see as they go through this art gallery. From there, I started to craft possible circulations and sections for my design.
Initial sketches: Expanding views that emphasize different aspects of the site
Initial sketches: Exploring circulation, rough placement of functions
First plan: Putting in all the required spaces, resolving the section
2 After more discussions and developing my design, I saw that the design was getting too complicated and confusing. I decided to simplify the form and circulation of my design, making it very clean and crisp. I also started looking into materials and construction details that could work well with my design intention.
Simplifying the design: Looking at different alternatives on how to simplify my form
Material Study: A metal facade made my design stand out from its natural surroundings
3 The final stretch of the design process, where every element of the building starts to be finalized, from the plans, sections and elevations, to the structure, to the details.
Plans, Structure: Finalizing new plans, drawing out how the structure of my building could look like
Section, Details: Process drawings for floor-to-ceiling details of the facade
Section, Details: Finalizing sections, and floor-to-ceiling details of the facade
