re you old enough to remember the ‘ summer of 76’, the hottest summer in the 20th century? From June to August the sun shone 14 hours a day, reservoirs ran dry, and forests ignited Higher temperatures have been recorded since in the UK, notably the summer of 22, with thermometers exceeding 40°C in places All very different from this summer, the wettest and coolest since the Titanic disaster in 1912 So, what’s going on? Aren’t we supposed to be expecting increasingly hot summers as part of climate change? According to the Met Office, climate change is also contributing to the heavy rain fall we ’ ve been experiencing The UK weather, never predictable has become even less predictable! The good news is that emissions are slowly coming down in the UK, so let’s keep going and the weather is meant to perk up for the rest of the summer

When top Southsea hairdresser, Belinda Cleary, took on an aspiring apprentice back in 2011 little did she know the novice stylist would one day become her business partner.
That day has just come and following a career that has seen her work at some of the top salons in London, Jess Kennelly has become a director of Medusa, the salon Belinda has run for the past 13 years.
And following months of searching the pair have just opened at new premises in Fawcett Road.
Belinda explained that following the challenges of running a large salon in Osborne Road through the pandemic, she took the decision to downsize and was delighted when Jess decided to come on board.
“Downsizing will mean I can have a better balance between homelife and the business. And for Jess, it means she has a permanent base to work and the flexibility she needs to work around bringing up her young daughter.”It’s cool to think that I started my hairdressing career with Belinda and who would have thought, all these years later, we would be going into business together,” she said. Belinda has always been a strong advocate for apprenticeships and helping people to start their career in hairdressing.
She is also known for her love of colour and creating a
distinctive look for her loyal band of clients.
“We have brought a splash of vibrant colour to the new salon, and we have enjoyed welcoming clients old and new,” added Belinda.
Belinda and Jess are celebrating their first anniversary on 21st August and during this time have seen their business grow, with many new clients drawn to their calm, inclusive and welcoming Boutique Salon. “Our first year has gone by in a flash and we are so grateful to all our lovely clients for keeping us so busy. It really is a pleasure to help you look and feel fabulous,” added Belinda and Jess.
We are celebrating the start of our 2nd year with the launch of a new Luxury Scalp Treatment Service.
This service is the ultimate luxurious and relaxing experience, that involves the use of a Japanese head spa, jade eye mask and massage brushes. Each treatment takes around 90mins including a full consultation and blow-dry.
: All the treatments start with a detox cream that is massaged into the scalp to gently exfoliate the scalp and prepare it for the chosen treatment.
ENERGY is an intensive anti-hair loss treatment. Strengthens and thickens the hair from the root as well as prolonging the hair’s life.
PURITY combats dandruff, normalising the scalp with an anti-recurrence action, as well as providing relief.
BALANCE combats greasy scalp by reducing and regulating sebum production; for long-lasting clean and lightweight hair.
COMFORT soothes sensitive skin, stops itching and redness.

Did you know that there are deep divers who can hold their breath for up to 24 minutes? Just imagine that. It’s astounding. They train their bodies to withstand extremely high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood to increase the time they can remain underwater. Breath holding naturally occurs under temporary stress or threat. However, with prolonged stress or trauma, habitual and involuntary breath holding can occur even without physical danger. This can further tax the nervous, hormonal, immune systems, and respiratory muscles.
The phrase “don’t hold your breath” has roots in this bodily response that occurs when we anticipate something occurring - i.e. not fully present in the moment, waiting for something to happen.
I'm going to share a little bit more about two of these breathing patterns and what you can do to change them.
It may seem strange that part of the remedy can also be, wait for it… holding your breath! Learning to control your breath in any situation can have an enormous impact on your life.
We don’t all have to be deep sea divers to benefit. Involuntary and habitual breath holding is a form of dysfunctional breathing. Gasping or panting are also common breath dysfunctions. Yet, they do have a use, they indicate that the nervous system is overcompensating. Often, a sign that trapped tension or unresolved trauma is being held within the body.
Sometimes, if we are faced with a threat, the body’s automatic reaction can be to hold the breath. It is part of a freeze survival response, to make you less noticeable to predators. Although the freeze response is a natural primal survival mechanism, it can be triggered by various non-lifethreatening stressors in modern life. Unfortunately, if some of these patterns become ingrained in the system, then even in situations which are not dangerous, subtle breath holding can take place.
This can lead to chronic stress and anxiety as the body remains in a heightened state of alertness.
Gasping in breath is much more common than you might think. I observe it to some degree in many of my clients. It can also present as low-level panting in and out through the mouth. This is the body remaining in a heightened state of arousal because of a malfunctioning fight-flight response.
Gasping during fight-flight situations, redirects blood flow to the muscles and maximises oxygen
uptake. When overused, it can lead to a type of chronic hyperventilation or mouth breathing. This means levels of cortisol and adrenaline will be higher than is healthy which causes inflammation, anxiety and premature ageing.
Premature ageing? Yes, because the body is in a perpetual state of stress, therefore rest and recovery are no longer a priority, survival is. Therefore, cell regeneration and repair slow down.
Now you're probably wondering how you can change your breath so you can feel rejuvenated, increase your immunity and energy, sleep better and show up better in your relationships.
If you are contemplating this, then you've already taken a massive step and that’s: awareness.
Try these:
● Put post-it notes up in places where you often experience stress with one word written on it: “BREATHE!”
● Whenever you’re walking, focus on breathing through your nose.
● Take a moment right now and bring your awareness to how you’re breathing.
energy to do my work. I felt exhausted and fatigued for over two years. Now, I feel full of energy and so much lighter. I'm feeling the layers just melting away and feeling better and better.”
Sandra, S. Client
“By the 3rd song in the breathwork playlist it felt like a plug had been removed and I felt energy flowing up and down my body. I felt all the tension release. Suddenly I felt a deep sense of calm and acceptance.” Bob. R, Southsea Client
I work with a unique combination of breathwork, meditation, and introspection that brings big changes into the lives of my clients. I’ve helped many people to overcome self-limiting beliefs, and the effects of childhood trauma and prolonged stress.
Breathing practice has been shown to have a positive impact on a variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood disorders, addictions, pain reduction, and stress tolerance.
“Breathwork gives you that moment just to really calm down and focus on just one thing rather than a million things.” Ray, K. Felpham Client
“I felt so much shame when I didn’t have enough
People believe they must live with stress and anxiety. That they need to ”grin and bear it” or “buck up their ideas” and get on with it. But this isn't true. By engaging with these practices, you can break free from the drama of your life.
You can receive a free guide in the post that supports the first steps of self-enquiry and shows how introspection, meditation and breathwork can transform your life.

Sex education - It’s the conversation that many parents dread having and a topic teachers rarely relish imparting to a room full of adolescents.
In the digital age, talking about the birds and the bees no longer cuts it and the need for young people to be taught about the importance of loving relationships, is even greater.
Recent research showed the average age of first exposure to porn is just 13 and 10 per cent of youngsters have seen porn by the age of 9, while the issue of young people sharing explicit images of each other to shame or discredit, is a continuing challenge.
Thankfully help is at hand in the shape of awardwinning Portsmouth based (s)expert, Jo Morgan, BA, PGCE, PGCert.
Vibrant and vivacious, her approach to the subject has won her plenty of plaudits and she manages to impart valuable information and advice in a fun and no nonsense way.
During a 15-year-long career in teaching, which saw
her named Best Relationships and Sex Education teacher in the UK in 2020, Jo gained national acclaim for her groundbreaking work on RSE, LGBTQ+ inclusion and Wellbeing.
Since then she has been on a mission to spread the word on how to talk about sex and her first book
Empowering Relationships and Sex Education has just been published. “Sex education is part of the road map for life that young people need to help them make sense of the world.
“I’ve always been interested in how we teach our young people about sex and I hope that teachers will find the ideas and advice I am sharing will help them to bring this important topic to life in the classroom,” explained Jo, who won an Inspirational Women of Portsmouth Award for her work in education.
“When we get this right it is the greatest gift we can give to young people, offering them skills for life. It empowers them to love themselves and find love with other people. It helps them acquire a clearer sense of themselves and their character and helps to develop empathy with others. It fosters a sense of agency and reciprocal sexual citizenship. It combats fear and shame around sex, unhelpful messages from porn, peer pressure and so much more. “Good sex education is everything!” she said.
Empowering Relationships and Sex Education is published by Routledge and is available online and from leading bookshops. Jo also advises businesses, find out more at: www.engenderingchange.co.uk
Expanded Pre-School provision at Portsmouth High School GDST
t Portsmouth High School GDST, we understand how crucial the formative preschool years are for children, and how they lay the foundations for future success.
Right from the start, children are encouraged to be curious and develop a love of learning. Teachers plan exciting learning adventures both inside and outside the classroom.
Head of Early Years, Mrs Fabre De La Grange, said ‘We are delighted to announce this bespoke approach to learning for our youngest pupils. It will enable a seamless start to Reception with children being even better prepared and ready for school. Our new Reception classroom will be full of engaging learning opportunities with a dedicated safe and secure outdoor play area alongside.’
Prospective parents are warmly invited to come and explore the new space and find out more about how this approach will give children the best possible start to their education. Contact Admissions Registrar Mrs Fergie Cox on 023 9282 4916, email admissions@por.gdst.net or scan the QR code on our advert.
To enhance our provision, from September 2024, we are tailoring our approach to teaching children in our Pre-School. The size of the teaching space is increasing through the addition of a second classroom giving pupils access to a wider range of learning activities. During core teaching times, the class will be split into a Nursery Class for our youngest pupils and a pre-Reception Class for older pupils starting Reception in the following September. This change will enable older pupils to focus on their learning in greater depth in readiness for starting school.

s the housing market continues to emerge from the hypostasis that rising interest rates caused, it’s a busy time with plenty of sales. Strangely, the viewing to sale ratio level continues to remain low, much to the frustration of some of our sellers of larger properties, but the odds of getting an offer from a viewing, are actually that much higher.
From previous experiences of general elections, the housing market pauses whilst the outcome is determined, but not this time. The market continued apace and whilst it is true, that there is pent up demand from last year, when interest rates rose constantly, it does seem that confidence levels are building. Whilst we are yet to face the first budget of the new government, there is the promise of lower interest rates, seemingly within reach, so the indications are an active housing market will continue as we head into the second half of the year… touch wood!
The bad news is, that the length of time it
seems to take to convey a house sale continues to get longer. You would have thought, that with all that modern technology can offer, it should be relatively easy to reduce the time it takes to do the legal work, but it’s becoming more evident than ever before, that call centre solicitors struggle to keep up with the local high street practices.
I strongly urge anybody looking to find a good solicitor, take the time to check verified reviews and to try to keep it local. A local solicitor knows their patch, which with so many period homes and quirky legalities, covenants, flying freeholds etc in the area, you will save time and money, compared to a legal team trying to get their head around things from a windowless call centre in Milton Keynes.
So, if you’re thinking of selling, or have some rental properties that need proper management please don’t hesitate to call we’ll be happy to advise and help.

The genius of Van Tulleken’s book, Ultra Processed People is to make you realise that Ultra Processed Food, UPF, is strategically and intentionally designed to be addictive and to stimulate the genes in many of us who are a little obsessed by food and need no encouragement to overeat. It is made by unscrupulous organisations who do not have your health in mind. This realisation has helped me to focus my attention on the food industry as a whole and to make some changes to my eating habits. I have not knowingly eaten UPF for 4 months since reading the book.
UPF refers to highly profitable, hyper-palatable products designed to displace fresh whole foods. Use these two rules to identify UPF: Was the food made with love to nourish you, and do you have the ingredients in your own kitchen? If not, it's probably UPF.
In the first 3 to 4 weeks of eating no UPF, I felt irritated and
frustrated, as if I had tried to go on a fad diet or stop drinking for dry January. I suspect my body was craving the salt, sugar and fat contained in most UPF.
After 4 weeks, the agitation subsided and I started to ease into my new diet, aware that the bread from the local sourdough bakery or our home-made variety is very chewy and reassuringly time consuming to eat. This ‘chewability’ of food is also a marker to identify UPF. UPF dissolves quickly in your mouth and is consumed too readily for the body to process, and deliberately stops you feeling full so causing you to overeat.
The list of associated increased health risks is devastating; cardiovascular disease, cancers, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver and bowel disease, colitis, Crohn’s, irritable bowel, and dementia.
The strongest message in the book for me was to understand why you can’t outrun a bad diet and obesity is not a choice, it’s a food industry created epidemic and it’s really not your fault. These products are designed to be addictive. But of course cooking is time consuming and for many it can be challenging.
Last year Sally from Mango Wellbeing launched ‘Good Mood Food’ cooking classes in Southsea (in addition to her Pilates Core&Calm classes at CourtX); teaching people how to create wholesome, delicious meals from scratch. Launching in September is their brand new ‘Gold Membership’ 1:1 lifestyle coaching program - See website for further details.
