Southsea LIFESTYLE
As a teenager, a family friend once said, ‘You don’t realise this now, but life constantly changes’. At the time those words of wisdom made little sense, in fact, my life in a Dorset village seemed annoyingly repetitive and would probably never change. How little did I know. Looking back at our lives as adults, the amount of change we encounter can be incredible, from moving jobs to moving homes, making new friends or having children, nothing stays the same. Indeed, every edition of Southsea Lifestyle both reflects change in our amazing city or helps you to make changes in your own life, whether it’s to improve your well-being by beginning yoga, (P.40), or trying breath work techniques (P.10). Or perhaps you are contemplating selling your property, see P.14 or simply having a luxurious tea (P.13)? In just a few weeks we will be voting in the next general election, no one knows how that will play out, but one thing is for certain, regardless of the result, everything will change..

HOW CAN HARNESSING YOUR BREATH TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE?
Elios StoneThe field of holistic health is all a buzz about breathwork. Breathing is a largely automatic and utterly fundamental part of our human physiology. The first breath that you took when you were born into the world kick-started all your organs. After that first moment of birth, you breathe about 20,000 times a day until you take your last.
breathwork whilst suffering from debilitating anxiety, after a few weeks of support, he said: “I had a great day at work, for the first time since I started this job six months ago”
Yet the very process of breathing holds huge potential for improving health and vitality. Breathwork is more than just taking deep breaths.
What’s breathwork? In this context, I’m referring to focused techniques that help you change your experience of life so that you can process emotions, regulate your nervous system, improve physical health, and find spiritual liberation! So that you can live a better life.
Poor breathing patterns and behaviours can leave you with increased stress, anxiety, and discomfort in your body. The good news is that the effects can be reversed with proper techniques.
Pranayama, ancient breathwork practices in yoga, means “control of breath” or “control of life force”. Yoga features eight classical pranayama techniques. While beneficial, strict adherence to yogic practices isn’t necessary to experience breathwork’s benefits.
Breathing is, and remains, an instinctive process. However, for many, this process is not operating functionally nor optimally. Several things can influence the quality of your breathing. A stressful career, lack of functional movement, emotional turmoil in childhood and adult life, poor posture, even restrictive clothing can all have an ill effect.
It becomes ‘breathwork’ when you bring your conscious awareness to changing your breath. Many powerful techniques exist to control your breath to foster improved physical and emotional well-being. It is a widely accessible tool that can be incorporated into daily life.
Malcolm, a client, discovered the power of
Only using breath techniques like these often means that some of the deeper work around emotions and selfsoothing can be bypassed or overlooked. Vicky found pranayama helpful, but it wasn’t until her breath practices were combined with introspection that her deeper patterns began to change. Vicky reflected on how she had changed: “I’m not using screen time or food as an emotional crutch anymore. I feel so much more confident and calmer”
You may have also heard of hyperventilation, which has been made popular in the mainstream through the Wim Hof method of breathing. Wim Hof shares a type of breathwork along with cold water immersion that he found helpful when dealing with profound loss. This technique can support some people, but not all.
If you have a sensitive or easily activated nervous system, it’s better to start with gentle step-by-step therapy. Amy found a grounded approach to breathwork greatly rewarding , she said: “In the mornings I would have a deep sense of panic that would last for hours. My mind would go through all the worst-case scenarios. Through the program, I realised that my addict-self loved me being in a panic and I learnt how to change it”
There are many breathwork techniques that, when integrated well, can ripple out into the rest of your life. That’s where the real power is. When you combine appropriate types of breath techniques together and include guided, personalised, and tailor-made meditations, you get the opportunity for true transformation.
Therapeutic breathwork must be held by someone who is trained, certified, insured and experienced to guide you into the deeper realms of somatic release and through effective integration. Enabling you to gently release deep-seated mental, physical, and emotional tensions in a way that can be truly life-changing.
tools, Lana said: “I used to feel so lonely all weekend, with overwhelming shame and regret. The connection I have with myself now means I’ve discovered self-forgiveness. The loneliness has disappeared”
Now, imagine taking the first step on this journey of renewal and empowerment. What areas of your life are ripe for change? Discovering your path to inner peace and fulfilment begins with recognising what’s ready to evolve in your life.
Breathwork, meditation and introspection together provide powerful tools for reducing stress and promoting better health. By consistently practicing and incorporating them into your daily routine, you can unlock the transformative power of your breath and make a profound difference to your life. Lana’s emotional well-being transformed dramatically after combining the breath with these other
Sophie, one of the many people accessing the power of Holistic Shadow Work, shared it best just a few weeks into the program: “The breathwork feels amazing, unexplainable, I feel like a great weight has lifted. It doesn’t feel painful anymore.”

PERCY HARRISON OPTICIANS
Do you suffer from dry, itchy or sore eyes? Eyes that water frequently or uncomfortable eyelids? This describes me perfectly. For many years I have suffered with uncomfortable watery eyes that also made the skin around my eyes inflamed and sore. I have tried many different types of lubricating eyedrops and although they helped a bit, I never felt truly comfortable. I love wearing makeup and for years I have regularly been unable to. So I decided things had to change and I wanted to offer a service in Portsmouth for other people, just like me. We are proud to launch our Dry Eye Clinic at Percy Harrison Opticians, with Independent
Prescribing Optometrist, Pauline Robison. Pauline is offering Dry Eye assessments to help determine the underlying cause and type of Dry Eye, and develop a treatment plan . She is also carrying out in-office treatments such as meibomian gland expression and lid cleaning. We now stock a large range of nourishing, Dry Eye friendly cosmetics and skincare, containing active ingredients such as antiaging marine collagen, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and vitamin E. For a chat about whether our dry eye clinic might be for you, find out more about our cosmetics, skin care and dry eye treatment range, or to book an assessment call us on 02392 826831

THE INTEREST RATE CLIFF HANGER
Neil MaxwellWhen the Monetary Policy Committee met on the 9th May, the press was full of speculation, with much talk of interest rates coming down, but it wasn’t to be. Instead, we’ve been left with a promise that rates would probably be reduced at the next MPC meeting on 20th June.
Interestingly, The International Monetary Fund have criticised this decision, saying that the UK should have cut rates, as it’s expected that UK growth will hit 0.7% this year, whilst not an overwhelming figure it is far better than negative growth, in other words…recession.
We have also seen a growth in clients buying to let again, for the first time in a while, as they see bricks and mortar, as a safe haven for their capital, plus they are realising better rental returns than have been seen in recent years.
While on the other hand, some clients are calling time on their buy to let investment, thanks to the loss of some tax benefits and increased legislation by local government.
“two Chinooks swooped in to land on Castle Field, whilst two Apache gunships circled overhead, who says an estate agent’s life isn’t filled with drama”
The impact of all this on the customers we’re dealing with, is confidence and affordability, and after the vertical climb of rates between May and September last year, I think we’re all due some relief.
Since January we have seen consistent activity in the marketplace particularly in the first-time buyer market and this is filtering up through the price bands, but many of our customers are holding out for the rate cut, before taking the plunge.
The general number of viewings has been much reduced, but the level of sales is far higher than this time last year, which is unusual as normally higher viewings equates to higher sales.
On another note, on 5th June, Southsea will be hosting World leaders at the D-Day 80 events on the Common. I shall never forget the last commemorations in 2019, when as I drove to an appointment two Chinooks swooped in to land on Castle Field, whilst two Apache gunships circled overhead, who says an estate agent’s life isn’t filled with drama.

Three friends who met at Portsmouth University started Baja Mexicali in Whiteley and were encouraged by its success to open the Portsmouth branch, which serves a truly delicious combination of Californian and Mexican food such as burritos, tacos and quesadillas. They offer small plates to share like Chicharrones, Muchos Nachos and
Garlic Mulitas (corn tortillas grilled with garlic & mixed cheese). Situated at the base of the glossy black Catherine House, close to Portsmouth and Southsea train station, Californian restaurant and cocktail bar, Baja Mexicali is a great addition to Portsmouth’s city centre and is the sister restaurant to Southsea’s Maya Restaurant.
There is a great variety of meat, fish, and vegan dishes, catering to people with special dietary needs. All the dishes are meticulously prepared and bursting with flavour. Most people find 3 or 4 dishes to be sufficient.
The cocktail selection is also Mexi-Cali inspired, featuring drinks such as Latin Passion, Mexpresso, and Mexican Mule – all delicious! Monday through Thursday, they offer 2 for £12.95 on selected cocktails.

THE BENEFITS OF LANO
Southsea Lifestyle talks to Neil Smith about the benefits of yoga and why his yoga studio in Elm Grove is called LANO
‘Ithink lots of people have pre-conceived ideas about yoga and think it’s all meditation and chanting. That can be one aspect of yoga, but it can also be as strenuous as any workout, but without the distractions and competitive nature of the gym. Or, yoga can be incredibly calming and soothing – it really depends which class and which style of yoga you choose, said Neil, who opened LANO Southsea in 2018.
‘I began going to yoga classes years ago in Brighton to try to help a nagging injury and improve my mental wellbeing. After just a few sessions, I felt amazing. I could move more easily in my body, my mind had more clarity, and I began to sleep better.
But the yoga studio I attended only taught one style of yoga and I was craving more. Later, on my travels, I came across a yoga studio in Cape Town that taught various forms of yoga all under one roof. It was enough to inspire me to open our first studio in Chichester, in 2015, teaching various styles of yoga, from Ashtanga to Hot Flow. LANO Chichester became the talk of the town and began to attract people coming to classes from outside of the city, including Southsea, which led to LANO Southsea opening in the former Auto Marine shop in Elm Grove. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Covid forced us to close our doors and at times I did wonder if we’d be able to open again, but Southsea is a
wonderful supportive community and we’ve gradually recovered to the point that we now have about 500 people attending classes each week, men and women, all at different levels of fitness. We welcome everybody, from beginners who have never set foot in a yoga studio before to those who are more advanced and have a regular practice.’ So why the name LANO? ‘Quite simply LANO stands for Look After Number One, which is something I’m passionate about, because the better you are in your own mind and bodythe better you are able to take care of the people around you.’
So how does someone new to yoga start at LANO? ‘Go to our website where you can book a one-off class from £15, or I’d recommend one of our Intro offers – £29 gives you 30 days of unlimited classes Monday - Friday, 7.00 – 17.00, or £49 gives you 30 days of unlimited classes, any day, any time, which gives you the chance to try lots of styles of yoga to see which suits you. Then, just come along with some loose
clothing/sports clothes, we can supply a mat and towel, if required. You will receive a warm LANO welcome.
WIN A LANO SOUTHSEA INTRO UNLIMITED CLASS PASS, WORTH £49
To take part, check out the LANO website https://lano.life and answer the following question: How many classes does LANO Southsea run on Tuesdays? Now go to www.southsealifestyle.co.uk to register your answer.
The competition closes at midnight 30th June and is only available to people new to LANO Yoga. The winner will be drawn at random by a member of Southsea Lifestyle from the names submitted - with the correct answer. The winner will be informed within 24 hrs by email, if the prize is not accepted within 3 days another winner will be drawn.
THE RENAISSANCE CHOIR: POULENC’S “GLORIA”
7.30pm, Saturday 13 July, Church of the Holy Spirit, Fawcett Road PO4 0DY.
Time for something completely different?
Two hours of dream-time music to chill out to, to relax you and to take you to a calmer place in your mind.
The zesty Gloria by Poulenc, accompanied by Karen Kingsley, is surely one of the best-loved twentieth century choral works. It is contrasted with local composer Ian Schofield’s Stream of Life, freeing stress with the words of the Indian guru Rabindranath Tagore.
The programme also contains William Byrd’s
Ne Irascaris, Gitanjali Chants by Craig Hilla Johnson and John Cage’s 4/2, a Zeninspired work of inner peace.
The programme of restful delights comes from the award-winning Renaissance Choir, regarded by many as the amateur choir’s version of The Sixteen. The concert features the gorgeous cathedral-like acoustic of Southsea’s Church of the Holy Spirit.
Tickets £15. Further info from https://renaissancechoir.org.uk or 01243 379724.
AWARD-WINNING SOUTHSEA SPIRIT
Elly HughesNestled in the heart of Albert Road, Southsea Spirit, stands as a beacon of the area's dynamic nightlife and cultural tapestry, renowned for an extensive selection of craft beers, artisan cocktails, and fine spirits, including their very own tropical gin and what I believe to be the best spicy margaritas this side of the solent.
Man and Slap Noodles, Southsea Spirit has firmly positioned itself as a community hub; continuously supporting local, and independent businesses much like themselves.
This award-winning cocktail bar has rapidly become a favourite haunt for locals and visitors alike, offering an eclectic mix of excellent drinks, and themed events, all within a quaint, and friendly environment that truly captures the essence of our beautiful, vibrant Southsea.
With regular art workshops, live music, and collaborative foodie pop-ups throughout the year, featuring the likes of The Bagel
It’s no wonder that they recently won ‘best bar in Hampshire’ as part of the Muddy Stiletto Awards, a very well deserved accolade that perfectly captures the love, and hard work that has been put in by Hattie, Charlotte and the wider team, as the business continues to thrive, as a much-loved addition to the area’s food and drink scene.
I’d highly recommend giving them a follow on social media to keep up to date with their newest wave of exciting events, and next time you find yourself on Albert Road, make sure to stop by Southsea Spirit –where every drink is a toast to the vibrant soul of Southsea.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICING YOUR BOILER?
Bert Morris of iGas says It’s very important!
As the seasons change and temperatures drop, our reliance on gas boilers for warmth and comfort becomes increasingly evident. However, amidst the coziness they provide, it's easy to overlook the importance of regular maintenance and servicing for these essential appliances. Yet, neglecting this aspect can lead to a multitude of issues, ranging from decreased efficiency to potential safety hazards. Here's why scheduling regular gas boiler servicing should be a priority for every homeowner.
5 REASONS WHY
1. SAFETY FIRST: Perhaps the most critical reason to ensure regular servicing of your gas boiler is safety. Gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and even explosions are real dangers associated with poorly maintained boilers. During a service, a qualified technician will thoroughly inspect the boiler for any leaks, blockages, or faulty components, ensuring that it operates safely.
2. EFFICIENCY MATTERS: A well-serviced boiler is an efficient boiler. Over time, dirt, debris, and general wear and tear can cause a decline in efficiency, leading to increased energy consumption and higher utility bills. During a service, the technician will clean the internal components, check for any inefficiencies, and make adjustments to optimize performance, ultimately saving you money in the long run.
3. PROLONGING LIFESPAN: Just like any other mechanical device, regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your gas boiler. By addressing minor issues early on and keeping the system clean and well-functioning, you reduce the likelihood of major breakdowns and costly repairs down the line. Investing in servicing now can save you from having to replace the entire boiler prematurely.
4. WARRANTY REQUIREMENTS: Many boiler manufacturers stipulate regular servicing as a condition of their warranty. Failing to adhere to these requirements could void your warranty, leaving you responsible for any repair or replacement costs that may arise. By keeping up with servicing schedules, you not only ensure the continued performance of your boiler but also maintain the validity of your warranty.
BE SAFE NOT SORRY
5. PEACE OF MIND: Knowing that your gas boiler has been professionally serviced provides invaluable peace of mind. You can rest easy knowing that your home is warm, safe, and energy-efficient, without the looming worry of potential malfunctions or hazards.
