024 will be the 20th anniversary year of Southsea Lifestyle. We began with a modest, black & white publication, which we posted through our neighbours’ letterboxes. Today we pride ourselves in distributing our magazines across the city, featuring our diverse community and a wide range of exciting businesses. Over the years we have adapted and changed, keeping the magazine fresh and relevant. We have gone from a monthly edition to bi-monthly. Some of you may remember we also published a larger A4 magazine for a while and changed our name from The Southsea Directory to the current title, Southsea Lifestyle, in 2016. It’s not been an easy journey, but we are proud to have become something of a Southsea institution and a publication that people look forward to receiving. We know we’d not still be here without the support of our fabulous advertisers, some of whom have been with us since we started, and you, our amazing readers. We offer our most heartfelt thanks. Wishing you a very happy Christmas and New Year. Kevin John Dean

SIGNS OF CONFIDENCE? Neil Maxwell

ith the stabilisation of interest rates, we are seeing a return of confidence to the marketplace, which hopefully can only continue following the recent chancellor’s Autumn Statement. Whilst there wasn’t any direct boost to the housing market from the chancellor, in terms of a stamp duty holiday, or allowances, it has got to be hoped that the tax cuts will help reinforce the ‘green shoots of recovery’ that we are gradually seeing.

There were several reports that house prices started increasing in October, which I suspect was quite a surprise to the majority of people in our industry. Although we have seen some levelling of prices, the predicted crash hasn’t happened, but anyone proclaiming house prices have started to increase should be called an optimist at the very least. Many of us, who have decided not to move have spent money on extending and improving our homes, and it’s been amazing, when we’ve carried out valuations, to see the quality and ingenuity of many of the projects that have

8

been undertaken. It’s worth bearing in mind that renovated properties have commanded both a better price, and level of interest, compared to their contemporaries, but it’s always wise to be mindful of the building costs — versus the likely end value.

We undertake many projects throughout the year and most recently we have teamed up with our own in-house interior designer, Charlie Smith, who works with our clients to renovate aspects of people’s properties that might need some attention, ensuring they achieve the best possible selling price, without breaking the budget. On the lettings front the activity levels have been very good, and for the first time I can remember we’ve almost run out of available properties. However, our landlords are achieving good rents from very good candidates, so if you’re thinking of letting don’t hesitate to call! As we wave goodbye to 2023, I’d like to thank all our customers both past and present, and the team and I, at Fry & Kent, look forward to seeing you in 2024.

HOLISTIC SOLUTIONS FOR TUMMY TROUBLES Elios Stone

E

ven occasional gut problems can be disruptive, sometimes even embarrassing. The accompanying sensations and symptoms can be deeply uncomfortable and life altering. It can feel like everything’s out of control.

You probably already know that the symptoms of gut problems can have many origins. For example combinations of causes such as emotional stress, pharmaceutical drugs, or past dietary choices.

Once the symptoms pass (if you catch a break) there can be a great sense of relief. And then, hope that they won’t return.

In Southsea on Albert Road, you will find Budd’s

When you’re suffering with chronic gut dysregulation it can feel like it’s never going to end. Gastrointestinal problems, and managing them, can become a way of life. Whether that’s manifested as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leaky gut syndrome, or something else.

The reasons for persistent problems are often elusive and don’t have a single solution. But relief and healing are entirely possible, when a holistic approach is taken.

Trapped energies in the body can manifest as symptoms which are often diagnosed as IBS. Not many people consider when they have a gut issue that it can be related to trapped tension in the physical body. In Southsea, we are blessed to have an expert in releasing these tensions. Dr Rebecca Gouveia is a Chiropractor based at Southsea Chiropractic on Marmion Road. I personally vouch for her work; she is skilled and knowledgeable in what she offers. Many of my clients already see Rebecca, Wendy or other local professionals that enhance and complement the work they do with me. I only recommend those I wholly trust, and I know can truly help you to feel healthier and live a thriving life, relieved of tummy troubles.

When you’re suffering with intermittent or chronic gut dysregulation it can leave you feeling bloated, you might also experience diarrhoea or constipation. Gas can build up, affecting not only your comfort but your confidence. The joy of socialising, sharing a meal or going out in general can be tainted with anxiety, leaving you fearing food decisions or public embarrassment. But what’s not common knowledge is that past trauma and tension can be held in the body. This trapped tension often contributes to the manifestation of gastro symptoms. Sometimes at a point of stress or trauma, emotion and tension can get thwarted and pushed down into the body. When this happens, it leaves a kind of imprint, a somatic memory, until it can be released later. And, until it’s released, it causes dis-ease. These tensions can become stored in the nervous system or the tissues. They can cause blockages in the flow of your life force, affecting how your body systems function. They require a holistic approach that includes the mind, body and energy systems for true healing to take place.

Even after addressing many of the biochemical and biomechanical symptoms issues can persist. This can indicate that there needs to be a release of tensions from within the emotional body. In fact, many gut problems have emotional roots. The tension from an intense, traumatic, or challenging past situation can leave unresolved emotional residue, and for some of us that is held in the gut. When you de-stress and release past tensions (ultimately, digesting long-held emotions) your gut problems can simply disappear. When you de-stress you feel lighter and more at ease, giving your digestive system the chance to repair and heal. The people I work with find relief and healing through a personalised integrative approach of introspection, meditation and breathwork. You can feel free to live a more complete, grounded and fulfilling life. You can find the joy in food again. To receive your free guide in the post, use the QR code or link.

SUNDAY ROASTS TO BOAST ABOUT Elly Hughes

T

hey say a Sunday well-spent brings a week of content, and I’m fairly certain there’s no better way to spend a Sunday than tucking into a proper roast dinner, with all the indulgent trimmings (oh, and a few glasses of wine too, of course).

Photo: Lisa Baker

Luckily for us, Southsea is bursting with an abundance of independent eateries offering the very best in traditional Sunday roasts, with plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options as well. In fact, there’s so much on our doorstep, it’s actually pretty difficult to pick where to try next! Here are just a handful of the many magnificent pubs and restaurants serving up delicious roasts this season.

FOR THE BIG PORTIONS…CROXTONS, PALMERSTON ROAD Plentiful portions are a must when it comes to the great British roast, and Croxtons have absolutely hit the mark. With a variety of succulent meats to choose from, as well as an incredible nut roast, all served with piles of roasties, seasonal vegetables, lashings of gravy and a Yorkshire pudding the size of your head,

it’s definitely one to visit this winter. FOR THE VEGAN OPTIONS…KING STREET TAVERN, KING STREET You have probably heard of the ‘Gov’nors Roast’ offering a show-stopping trio of roast beef, chicken and pork, served with a large helping of extras, including pigs in blankets and cauliflowercheese. But did you know that The King Street Tavern also serves award-winning vegan and vegetarian roast dinners? It’s a must-visit if you’re looking for both comfort and quality FOR SHARING…THE COURTYARD, SOUTHSEA CASTLE If you’re planning a special occasion, or an overdue catch-up with friends, The Courtyard in Southsea Castle truly captures the essence of what it means to come together and share great food. Their incredible ‘Family Sunday Roast Sharing Feast’ is served on big boards in the centre of the table, including a trio of meats, and a generous offering of your favourite sides, including a cranberry and pork stuffing. A great choice to impress your guests! Must be booked in advance. FOR PUSHING THE BOAT OUT…BEACH CLUB, CLARENCE ESPLANADE Peacefully perched on the water’s edge, The Beach Club in Southsea provides a truly stunning backdrop for enjoying a hearty Sunday roast with friends and family. Not only does their menu offer an extensive choice of flavoursome dishes all served with thyme roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, cauliflower cheese, and a giant yorkie, their Sunday roasts are also gluten-free, making them a fantastic choice for inclusive dining. Don’t forget to check out their vibrant cocktail menu as well!

COMMISSIONING A PIECE OF JEWELLERY BY BARBARA TIPPLE

C

ommissioning a piece of bespoke jewellery can be a wonderful experience but one that should be approached with careful research. It is important to look at the work the jeweller has already made. Be sure to look at design, style and the quality of the manufacturing.

Using a reputable jeweller with workshops in house ensures the designer and goldsmith work closely together to execute your bespoke design.

Recently, Barbara purchased a pair of matching old cut fancy yellow diamonds. Without waiting for a client to purchase them Barbara designed a Toi et Moi ring with marquise diamonds in platinum and gold. Skilfully handmade by master goldsmith, David. Now available for purchase in either of our shops located in Southsea and Petworth. After your initial consultation the design will be finalised and the

A SELECTION OF WINES PERFECT FOR CHRISTMAS DAY

W

ith Christmas fast approaching fast you may be starting to think about what wines will complement the food you painstakingly prepare but also that friends and family will enjoy.

A good sparkling wine on the big day is a must to kick off celebrations, and a good Champagne certainly fits that bill. Living so close to an array of brilliant English wine producers however, an English sparkling wine is not only delicious but a great alternative, bringing wonderful flavour and complexity to the party. Hattingley Valley’s Blanc de Blanc 2015 with its wonderful round creamy texture, delicate citrus aromas and complex apple, biscuit and brioche flavours is a superb alternative to any Champagne. If you’re looking for a versatile white wine to accompany your starters or even your turkey, our Mandrarossa Viognier, 2022 from Menfi, Sicily pairs beautifully with fish and seafood and makes for a great accompaniment to turkey if you’re not a fan of red wines. Rich with ripe peach and apricots, juicy citrus notes with a touch of bitter almond on the finish. It’s an all-round winner! On to the main event. If turkey is your tradition, you might want a slightly lighter red to that doesn’t overpower. A good Pinot Noir or Beaujolais is a great, personally the Domaine Vendome, CrozesHermitage, Les Coulaires 2021 works perfectly. 100% Syrah from Northern Rhone, a lighter style

Syrah with juicy redand black cherries, brilliant acidity and fine tannins that helps cut through the rich stuffing, pigs in blankets and other tasty accompaniments. A Bordeaux, Rioja or Malbec makes an excellent pairing to richer meats. A personal favourite is Quinta do Infantado, Douro Tinto, 2019. Tinta Roriz & Touriga Franca blended and oak aged for 28 months, a wine with stunning complexity. Rich juicy black fruits, subtle oak notes, raisins, leather and tobacco flavours, superb acidity and ripe, well integrated tannins. Perfect along-side roast beef! For the Grand Finale, a good port and sweet wine are a must! Pair your Christmas Pudding and cheese board with the cracking Sandeman Late Bottled Vintage Port, 2018. The rich fruit flavours of Christmas Pudding are complimented by the bold fruits and sweetness of the Port. If your dessert is lighter and fruiter I can’t recommend the Chateau Delmond, Sauternes, 2018 enough. From botrytis affected Semillon grapes in Bordeaux. This sweet wine is rich in peach, apricot & honey flavours balanced by crisp, vibrant acidity. Sublime with Cropwell Bishop Stilton as well! Wines mentioned above are available from Crushed & Cured along with a wide selection of other styles we can recommend for your Christmas festivities. www.crushedandcured.co.uk info@crushedandcured.co.uk 60c Victoria Road South, Southsea PO5 2BT. BREWERY HOUSE: HELPING TO MEET THE CITY’S NEED FOR NEW HOMES

B

ringing Portsmouth City Council’s first Build to Rent scheme to life will be an honour and a privilege for Portsmouth and Southsea estate, letting and property management agency Chinneck Shaw.

As managing agent for Brewery House in Hambrook Street, Southsea, the team will oversee the professional letting and management of 17 new bright and airy apartments, including four affordable homes for key workers. In addition to offering some of the coolest living spaces for working professionals to enjoy, the building also benefits from the very latest

heating and energy kit to make their homes affordable to run and kind to the planet. Chinneck Shaw Associate Director Harry Renton-Rose, who has extensive experience of BtR developments including in London, said: “The Brewery House scheme is all about contributing much-needed, modern homes to address housing demand in our city. “While being the first of its kind here in Portsmouth, it reflects growing interest in Build to Rent developments nationally as part of the private rented sector.” The scheme has involved the renovation of the former Hambrook Street bottling store, a locally

“We are hugely excited to be appointed as managing agent for Brewery House and have the opportunity to play our part in the scheme’s future.” Harry’s colleague, Account Manager Shelley Morris-Green, explained: “Priority will be given to people who have strong links with Portsmouth – if you were born here, have family links and you will be working in the city, we’d love to hear from you.

listed building originally operated by Long & Co Brewery and recognised for its character and historic interest. In 1941, a German air raid on Portsmouth flattened the brewery, with bomb damage painstakingly repaired and the building restored in 1973. But although recognised as a heritage asset for the city, it eventually fell into disuse. Topped out in December 2022, the four-storey Brewery House has been converted into 13 twobedroom and 4 one-bedroom apartments in a sensitive and environmentally-friendly renovation. Harry added: “Our bid to the Council emphasised our long-standing Portsmouth presence and success as a trusted management partner for landlords and property owners across the city and wider region.

“As well as offering comfortable homes the council is keen to promote cycle use and each flat comes with its own access to cycle storage at basement level.” Brewery House is the first BtR scheme to be taken forward by Portsmouth City Council’s wholly owned development company, Ravelin Housing, tasked with the delivery of private and affordable housing for sale and rent. Profits from Brewery House and other Ravelin developments will be used to support further housing initiatives and council services. The aim is for Chinneck Shaw to begin marketing the homes towards the end of the year with the first tenants moving in during January 2024.
