From the Desk of the Director of Golf: Valued Members, I’d like to first welcome back all of our Seasonal Members. October is always an exciting time of year here at Innisbrook and this year is no different. In addition to nice weather and ideal golfing conditions, I’m very happy to announce the South Course is back open and better than ever! Mother Nature gave us ideal growing conditions this summer and your Grounds Team took full advantage. Here’s a recap on the improvements that were made to the course this summer: First, and most important, all 18 Greens on the South Course, along with our two tiered Practice Putting Green at the Osprey Clubhouse and both Practice Putting Greens on the North and South sides of the Driving Range, were re-turfed with Tif Eagle Bermuda, the same grass that is on our Copperhead, Island and North Greens. For the first time in decades, we will have the same, consistent putting surface on all 4 of our Championship Golf Courses and Practice Facilities. In addition to improving the Putting Surfaces, we also dramatically increased them in size; in some cases, especially on holes 5 – 13, twice their previous size! This will give us additional pin locations that we did not have previously and will ensure their health with less foot traffic in non-pinned areas. An enhancement that I am particularly pleased with is the re-sodding of our Bunker Edges. This, along with a new Agronomical Practice, that uses carpet-like mats to enter and exit the Bunkers, will keep our Edges thick and healthy for years to come. Another great enhancement was the clearing and cutting back of intrusive Brazilian Peppers and Tree Limbs that were blocking and getting in the way of good shots, i.e. the Tree Lined Fairways of holes 1, 2 and 4, that are now much more open and user friendly.
pipeline | 4
Cosmetically, we have improved many of our Bridges, Canals and Cart Paths and we re-sodded the Tee Boxes on holes 1, 4 and 14. I’m confident that these improvements and the others made over the past three years will reposition us as one of the Premier, Four Course, Golf Destinations in the Country. Salamander is committed to continuously improving our Golf offerings and takes great pride in the Satisfaction of our Members.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you around the Club,
Bobby Barnes

“ From Within the Tee Box” By Director of Golf Instruction, Dawn Mercer
Ask yourself…Do you swing “Through the ball” or “At the ball”? Think of other sports you’ve played.
• Soccer - kicking a ball down the field • Tennis – serving max speed over the net • Baseball – sending the ball far to center field These sports are in motion with little time to think and you react in the direction you want to go. Your foot, racquet or bat go through the ball, not stop at it or just try to connect. Use the same instincts when you swing a golf club. Make a “swing”, not a “hit”. This is why practice swings look so good, there’s nothing to react to and no result to anticipate. Next time you play or practice just go through to your destination. To schedule instruction, please call 727.942.5208 or contact me at dmercer@innisbrookresort.com.

TIP OF THE MONTH I have taught players from all competitive levels not to dwell on past failures, but to keep moving forward, to always look ahead and never look back. I teach them that bad cycles will occur, so they should stay relaxed, wait for the cycle to change and the tide will turn...if they keep the right mental attitude. I give them phrases like, "the next shot is more important than the last mistake." Or, "in order to be good I have to make mistakes. I prepare them for the inevitable frustrations that will happen while they are learning and playing tennis. Does this work? Yes, most of the time, but sometimes the overwhelming negatives are just too much for the players' emotions. As a result, they begin to analyze their foibles in correctly. They whine, "all my practice and look at what I have done! I couldn't even make an easy shot. I'm such a horrible player." Their focus goes off course; they drown in a flood of negatives. Usually all this drama begins because they are losing, not necessarily because they are playing poorly.
