Author’s Note

There are more than 200 different squirrel species in the world. Their homes include forests, fields, parks, and even underground! But when we think of squirrels, we most often think of those that live in trees. Acorns, walnuts, pine seeds, and holly berries are a big part of a tree squirrel’s diet. During warmer months, they gather and eat as much food as possible, bulking up their tiny bodies to help keep them warm in the winter. What they don’t eat they’ll hoard and hide, burying food deep in the soil. Squirrels have hundreds of hiding places and can even smell seeds and nuts buried under a foot of snow! But sometimes they forget where they stashed their food, and these forgotten seeds and nuts grow into new plants and trees. Because of this, squirrels are very important to the regeneration and growth of forests.

If you see a squirrel, don’t get too close—if they feel threatened, they could bite! Watch them from a safe distance as they scurry between their food sources on the ground and their nests high up in the trees. If you watch closely, you just might discover one of their hiding places!

The most common squirrel in North America is the Eastern gray squirrel, but squirrels come in all colors—red, black, brown, and white.

Many tree squirrel species give birth twice a year, in spring and summer. Baby squirrels are born blind and are dependent on their parents for several weeks.

Unlike tree squirrels, who stay active all winter, ground squirrels hibernate. They burrow underground, curl up tightly, and enter an inactive state to conserve energy. They can stay asleep for up to nine months!
