T

ime to go to bed, Ted! Head to the tub. Come down from that tree now and get a good scrub.

Now get out of the bathtub before you catch cold. Leave the boats behind, Teddy. Please do as you’re told.

Hand me your day clothes and put on your nightshirt. Just look at those pantaloons— they’re covered with dirt!

Now go to bed, Ted, it’s time for lights out. This is no time for camping, or playing the scout.

Please go to bed, Ted— don’t rough-ride, my dear, for if you’re not careful, you’ll land on your rear!

No, you’re not on safari— put those animals away. It’s time now for sleeping. Get in bed, Ted, and stay!

That’s a wooden bear, Teddy, he’s too clunky for bed. If only there were soft ones to cuddle up with instead.

Keep your shirt on there, Theodore! Behave yourself, please? Stay warm or your asthma will flare up and you’ll wheeze.

Ah, sweetie! Yes, finally! That was a big yawn. Snuggle under the covers and sleep through ’til dawn.

Dream of mountains and forests and big open spaces. Who knows, you might grow up to save those beautiful places.

Theodore Roosevelt Jr., also known as Teddy Roosevelt, grew up to become one of the most beloved US presidents. But he was once a little boy who had to go to bed every night—just like you! Teddy Roosevelt served as an assistant secretary of the navy. He was passionate about naval warfare and wrote an influential book on the subject, The Naval War of 1812. Today, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is named after him.

Teddy bears were invented to honor Teddy Roosevelt after he refused to shoot a trapped bear on a hunting trip and the newspapers began to publish cartoons about the story. They were originally, with his permission, called “Teddy’s Bears.”

Teddy Roosevelt was an early supporter of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Although he had left office by the time they were officially founded, he was an honorary vice president of the BSA and remains the only person to have been named Chief Scout Citizen.

Teddy had severe asthma as a child. He always believed it was vigorous exercise that helped control his asthma by the time he was twelve.

In the Spanish-American War (1898), Teddy Roosevelt recruited a volunteer cavalry regiment that was to become known as the Rough Riders, the only volunteer cavalry to see combat. It was a very mixed group and included wealthy East Coast university graduates, Texas Rangers, and Native Americans. However, like many people of his time, Teddy had beliefs about the differences between races that most of us would now find offensive. Teddy Roosevelt was an ardent game hunter. He once went on safari to Africa and killed waaaaaay too many animals and wrote a book about the experience.

As president, Teddy Roosevelt protected wildlife and wilderness in many ways. He formed the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), established 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 5 national parks, and 4 national game preserves. He enabled the American Antiquities Act in 1906, creating 18 national monuments. All in all, during his presidency, he protected approximately 230 million acres of public land!

Zzzzz!!

Teddy was reportedly such a loud snorer that there’s a story about how, on a visit to a Washington hospital, his snoring kept all the other patients up and resulted in so many complaints that he was given his own floor.
