Steph has never seen her wedding dress – or her husband Rob – but she knows they’re both perfect for her.
Growing up in a typical Australian household, Steph dreamt of one day getting married and having a home and a family of her own. The chance to travel the world with her future husband and children was her idea of perfection. Then at just 19, Steph was diagnosed with a rare retinal disease called Cone-Rod Dystrophy. Today Steph is one of over half a million Australians who have low vision or blindness. Luckily for Steph she is not alone. There’s a furry angel by her side.
When Steph met Rocky.
After battling through a rapid change in vision, Steph reached out to Guide Dogs for support. “I wasn’t too sure about it, but I went along for a half-day trial with a dog named Leo,” she says. “I started crying and thinking, ‘Oh my God, I can get my independence back.’ My fiancé Rob said he’d never
seen me walk so fast and freely until that day. It gave me so much confidence!” Steph immediately applied for a Guide Dog and soon a beautiful black Labrador trotted into her world. “Rocky and I clicked immediately,” Steph says. “He has changed my whole outlook on life. He’s been great not only for my independence, but for my mental health too. His companionship is incredible.”
A dream dress for a dream wedding.
There was one more obstacle Steph was anxious about: finding her dream wedding dress – without being able to see it. “I heard all these stories about people trying on wedding dresses and knowing it’s the one,” Steph says. “I was like, ‘That’s not going to happen to me.’ “I tried on about twelve dresses, but nothing felt right. #BPL13: OSPREYS ADD ANOTHER TITLE TO DYNASTY BY LACHLAN WILLIAMS The Tweed Heads Ospreys’ Bowls Premier League (BPL) dynasty is now complete, claiming the #BPL13 title on April 23 to make it their third championship in four events. The Ospreys were the dominant side all week at #BPL13 at Club Pine Rivers, dropping just one match on their way to winning the trophy and $25,000 cheque. The Ospreys join the Sydney Lions as the most successful BPL franchise, with three titles each.
Taking on the Murray Steamers in a semi-final, the Ospreys managed their way through to the grand final thanks to some Aaron Teys magic.
Earlier on the final night, home-team Brisbane Pirates were bundled out in straight sets by a dominant Lions outfit. Ryan Bester was on song in the preliminary final against the Lions, steering his side into a second final in three events.
The Ospreys capped off an unbelievable week, with a thumping win over the Steamers in the final to make it back-to-back titles. Tweed’s Aaron Teys was rewarded for his dominant week at #BPL13, claiming the tournament’s MVP award, his second. Finals results from #BPL13 below: Elimination Final –

Dawn Rises at the Australian Champion of Champions The stars were all out at the Dandenong Club last month at the Australian Champion of Champions. Delayed from 2020 due to COVID, all the State Champion of Club Champions (with the exception of WA) were on display, fighting it out to take the crown. In the men’s field Trystan Smallacombe (NT) edged out Corey Wedlock (NSW) on points differential to take the top prize.
In a star studded women’s field with 5 Team Henselite representatives that included 4 Jackaroos, Dawn Hayman showed why her consistency over the past year has everyone talking. She bowled brilliantly to take out her second Australian Champion of Champions title, becoming the first woman to secure multiple titles; and just the third person to claim back-to-back victories. “Winning back to back titles is amazing!” she said. “Especially in two different states on two different surfaces, my Henselite Dreamline XGs played brilliantly and I was able to play all the shots.”
Dawn has since gone on to take up her first berth at the Bowls Premier League with Perth Suns. Despite hailing from NSW, the spot opened for Dawn when COVID restrictions prevented the Western Australian team from travel. She didn’t disappoint and showed the same consistency at Pine Rivers as she has on all surfaces over the last 12 months. 4

BPL13, THE RECORD PREMIER LEAGUE BY VAL FEBBO As the dust begins to settle in the aftermath of the recent BPL13, a clearer picture emerges of the sheer volume of records that were either equalled or broken. Club Pine Rivers was ground zero for the Tweed Heads Ospreys’ historic third BPL title triumph, joining the Sydney Lions as the only franchise to achieve the feat, but having done so after just four appearances in the competition after debuting at BPL10 in November, 2019.
Furthermore, the Ospreys became just the second team, again with the Lions, to achieve back-to-back tournament wins following their victory in Moama at the end of February.
Astonishingly, the trio of Aaron Teys, Corey Wedlock and Chloe Stewart recorded a staggering 13 wins in a row, dating back from the last four matches of BPL12 through to the first nine matches at Pine Rivers, shattering the previous record.
That nine-game winning streak to commence play in Brisbane equalled the tally set by the Melbourne Pulse on the Murray at the beginning of the year as the longest unbeaten run to begin any BPL. Teys etched his name into the history books with his fourth title, joining fellow superstar Aron Sherriff as the only two to reach the milestone.
The now dual MVP joined an illustrious group of Sherriff, Ryan Bester, Scott Thulborn and Alex Marshall as multiple recipients of the award.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
The 27-year-old, along with Sherriff, Bester and Steamers’ teammate Michael Walker, now share the title of most Grand Finals appearances, with the quartet appearing in five apiece. The Steamers themselves extended the record of most finals series played, with eight, and now hold the outright title of most Grand Final appearances as a franchise with five.
Murray sat alongside Sydney and Brisbane with four before BPL13. The Moama Bowling Club franchise now boasts the undesirable title of most runner-up finishes, with three, alongside former team Adelaide Endurance.
Club Pine Rivers waited 523 days for BPL action, but the narratives and highlights that emerged from the eagerly awaited event made it all the more memorable.
Bowls Premier League action will kick off again from November 9-14, 2021.

“WE JUST LOVE IT”: ROLL BACK THE CLOCK TICKS ALL THE BOXES FOR CHERYL BY LACHLAN WILLIAMS While COVID lockdowns may have played havoc on many people’s motivation levels in 2020, one South Townsville woman has praised a Bowls Australia program for helping her keep fit and active. Cheryl Kent has lauded BA’s Better Ageing Program Roll Back the Clock, with nothing but positivity for the program. Roll Back the Clock aims to boost physical activity rates among Australians aged 65 and over through bowls, light exercise and education.
A regular at South Townsville Bowls Club’s Roll Back the Clock programs, Mrs Kent said the program offers a different insight into health and wellbeing than she had experienced before. “I do a lot of walking to keep fit, but the program exercises and education are just amazing,” she said.
“Our trainer Wendy was fantastic, adjusting the exercises to suit people with different conditions, and upping things for those of us doing it too easy. It tailored for everyone’s needs.” While the program itself generally runs for four to six weeks, Mrs Kent said she found herself implementing things she had learned after the sessions had finished.
“When COVID hit last year and shut everything down, a neighbour and I, when we were allowed, set up a circuit in my garage of exercises we had learnt,” she said.
“We benefitted greatly from it, I personally lost a bit of weight which was great.” Mrs Kent enjoyed her experience with Roll Back the Clock so much she and some other program participants started bowling at South Townsville.

“Three of us have joined the club as members now, and we have two teams in Jack Attack of people who did Roll Back the Clock,” she said.
“As much as the physical side of things is important, the social aspect of the program was the most fun. The program would go for an hour, but we’d all stay for another hour or two chatting afterwards. We just love it.” To find out more about Roll Back the Clock or to get involved, head to https://www.bowls.com.au/get-involved/rollbacktheclock/

PRINCE PHILIP (Duke of Edinburgh) passes away, just two months short of his 100th birthday. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson led tributes on the steps of Downing Street, as he praised the duke’s role in helping ‘’to steer The Royal Family and The Monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.’’ HRH Prince Charles also paid tribute to his beloved father by announcing shortly after his death,
‘’I particularly wanted to say that my father, for I suppose the last 70 years, has given the most remarkable, devoted service to The Queen, to my family and to the country and also to the whole of the Commonwealth . As you can imagine my family and I miss my father enormously. He was a much-loved and appreciated figure. And apart, from anything else, I can imagine he’d be so deeply touched by the number of other people here and elsewhere around the world and Commonwealth, who also I think, share our loss and sorrow. My dear papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him. And from that point of view, my family are deeply grateful for that. It will sustain us in this particular loss at this particular time.’’
Prince Philip passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday morning 9th April, 2021 at Windsor Castle with his beloved wife, Queen Elizabeth by his side. The Prince had many roles in his long life including naval officer, environmentalist, diplomat, father, grandfather, great grandfather and devoted husband and consort to the Queen.
The Prince’s death marks the end of an enduring love story that has lasted for over seventy three years and has been the foundation and rock of The United Kingdom. Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) was born into the Greek and Danish Royal Families, on the Greek Island of Corfu in 1921. He was the nephew of the reigning King of Greece. Unfortunately by the time he was two years old, his uncle had been deposed and his entire family exiled from Greece, forcing them to settle in Paris. Philip is the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Philip’s maternal grandfather was Prince Louis of Battenberg, who was also known as Louis Mountbatten. Louis renounced his German titles, became a naturalised British citizen and adopted the surname Mountbatten (an Anglicized version of Battenberg) during the First World War. This was done simply because of the animosity between Great Britain and Germany.
Education
Philip was first educated at an American School ‘’The Elms’’ in Paris, and in 1928 was sent to The United Kingdom to attend Cheam School. He then completed his schooling at prestigious Gordonstoun, before joining The Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon as a cadet.

Catherine’s Column
Princess Elizabeth
Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain and Prince Philip of Greece were first introduced in 1934 at the wedding of (Philip’s cousin) Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. They then met again five years later at The Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon. The then thirteen year old Elizabeth was visiting the college with her parents and younger sister Margaret. Eighteen year old Philip just happened to be their sole tourguide on that memorable day. According to reports circulating in royal circles at the time ‘’sparks flew’’ between the couple and Elizabeth was instantly smitten. The couple then commenced corresponding through letters.
The Engagement
Unfortunately, the journey leading to their nuptials in Westminster Abbey was not easy for the couple. They secretly became engaged in 1946 when Elizabeth was only twenty. However, King George V1 (Elizabeth’s father) had his doubts about Philip’s lack of financial independence, and also considered Philip to be ‘’A bit rough around the edges.’’ Nevertheless by 1947, Philip had King George’s permission to propose to Princess Elizabeth. Unsurprisingly, the king insisted that a formal engagement be delayed till Elizabeth’s 21st birthday. Philip then had to renounce his birth titles and become a naturalised British subject.
The Wedding, Children & Grandchildren
Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth were finally married in November, 1947. Great Britain was still recovering from World War 11. The nuptials were met with enormous enthusiasm from Post War Britain and its people. The ceremony was recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio to 200 million people around the globe. Prompting former Prime Minister Winston Churchill to describe the event as a ‘’flash of colour’’ on the hard road we have to travel. The Queen and Prince Philip became proud parents to 4 children, Grandparents to 8 grandchildren and Great grandparents to 10 great grandchildren. 12
The Funeral
Prince Philip’s funeral took place on Saturday 17th April. 2021. However, despite funeral arrangements having been in place for many years, and approved by The Duke of Edinburgh himself. Plans had to be extensively revised due to the Pandemic. Prince Philip’s coffin lay resting inside the Queen’s small private chapel at Winsor Castle, draped in a flag and flowers, until the day of the funeral. The actual funeral took place, out of public view inside the grounds of Windsor Castle and subsequently televised to an audience of millions around the globe. After the ceremony the coffin travelled in a customised Land Rover to St George’s Chapel where the Duke was laid to rest in the Royal Vault following the service.

The Fairy Tale
The Royal fairy tale of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth 11 lasted for more than 70 years. Making it the longest marriage by any British Sovereign in history. According to a Royal insider, the Royal couple were still very much enamoured with each other, however insists that Elizabeth wore the crown and Philip wore the pants.
THE QUEEN’S PERSONAL MESSAGE In 1997, an unusually reflective Queen Elizabeth offered a rare and personal insight into Prince Philip’s greatest contribution to public life by declaring. ‘’He is someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years.’’ ‘’I and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know.’’ Story Courtesy Of Catherine Colusso

Who we are Every day billions of animals experience unbearable suffering. At World Animal Protection we move the world to protect animals because the life of every animal counts. We’re a global animal welfare organisation and have been campaigning for over 50 years to end animal cruelty and suffering. Right now, we’re prioritising issues where change can transform the lives of the greatest number of animals by overhauling the global food system and ending the cruel exploitation of our planet’s wildlife.
Dear readers, As a woman, mother and passionate change agent, I am constantly challenged by the impact we have on each other, on animals and on our planet.
As people face urgent issues like the global pandemic, climate emergency and depleting natural resources, we give animals a voice and ensure their needs are met. Though the challenge is great, our determination is greater.
What we consume and how we live matters. Join us in protecting our amazing wildlife and farmed animals, so they too can have a life worth living – the health of our planet, our own health and the health of our next generation depends on it. Kind regards,

The accreditation, developed by the World Cetacean Alliance and supported by World Animal Protection, was awarded in recognition of the region’s responsible and sustainable whale watching practices. Whale Heritage Site status provides tourists with an easy way to select responsible whale and dolphin watching destinations; places where people can experience these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat and in an authentic and respectful way. In the 21st century, as the world builds back from COVID-19, there’s no reason for travel companies to sell tickets to cruel, outdated attractions which keep captive dolphins in permanent lockdown. You’ll be pleased to know that, with the help of our supporters, New South Wales has banned dolphin breeding and the importation of captive dolphins from other states.
© Adrien Aletti
Together with Action for Dolphins, we’re working on a sea sanctuary feasibility study with Dolphin Marine Conservation Park for the three remaining captive dolphins in Coffs Harbour. This means that the state’s last captive dolphins – Zippy, Bella and Jet - are one step closer to living out their days in a more natural environment. So, next holidays, when you’re wondering where to take the grandkids for a fun day out, skip seeing wild animals in captivity. There are plenty of tours available for you and your family to see wild dolphins or whales. Express your wild side, see animals in the wild where they belong.
Helping mother pigs this Mother’s day pigs build strong relationships with their babies and even get anxious when separated from them. When nursing, mother pigs have even been known to sing to their piglets. How sweet! Despite their emotional intelligence, pigs are amongst the most intensively farmed animals on the planet. Globally, three out of four mother pigs are reared in barren factory farms where they are confined to steel cages – sow-stalls – no bigger than a fridge for most of their lives. This keeps them from performing natural behaviours and being the great mothers to their piglets that we know they could be.
© World Animal Protection/Thomas Alexander
Did you know, that not only are pigs incredibly smart and emotionally complex, they’re also great mothers? Pigs have dozens of distinctive grunts, including specific ones to call their piglets – just like the human equivalent of names! Piglets learn to recognise their mothers’ voices after approximately two weeks. Like many human mothers,
Thanks to the actions of animal protectors, most Australian pigs are not kept in cages. But what you may not realise is that most of the processed pork in our supermarkets, such as bacon and ham, comes from pigs raised overseas, including from countries like the United States, that keep mother pigs in cages for most of their lives. You can help change this. If you choose to buy ham or bacon, check that it’s made with Australian pork (look for the bar chart that shows more than 90% Australian product) and ask your local supermarket to improve their labelling to make it easier to find high-welfare options. Together, we can give mother pigs lives worth living!

Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life. The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively.
Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists. Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction. A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older 16

NECK AND BACK PAIN 18
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Neck and back pain can range from mild, annoying aches to severe, disabling pain While most spine pain occurs as a part of the normal degenerative ageing process-it can
also be a warning sign of cancer, infection,
autoimmune disease, or a structural problem
• Arm/leg numbness or tingling
• Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and your arm.
WHY DOES THIS OCCUR?
• Sharp shooting pain that radiates from your lower back to your buttocks, and down your leg (sciatica)
around the spinal cord and nerves. As we age,
• Difficulties with walking and balance
causing pressure on the spinal cord/ nerves
Our spines are comprised of a number of joints
• Stiffness in your neck or back
changes occur as the joints wear out resulting in
• Difficulties with coordination
inflammatory processes such as osteoarthritis. The joints and tissues can also become
overgrown and compress a neural structure, which is called spinal stenosis.
Failure of the joints to hold the bones in
position can result in slippage and deformity.
These are common characteristics of conditions such as spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, or scoliosis. WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN THESE
DEGENERATIVE CHANGES CAUSE?
• Dull, burning, or sharp pain-which can be confined to a single spot or cover a large area.
• Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are important symptoms that require immediate medical attention. HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?
You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays. HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED? If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are beneficial. Low-impact exercise programs may improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and improve flexibility and mobility, increase endurance, and improve pain. Weight loss and improving one’s core strength are also useful.
away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse. There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.
WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP? A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life. Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain. An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial. You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility. The goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life. Courtesy Dr Raj Reddy, MBBS, MS, FRACS
WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE? Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord. Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

A mother’s wish that the compassion and empathy her son inspired in others will live on, has motivated Evonne Balcar to consider leaving a gift in her Will in honour of his memory. Evonne had intended to name her second son James, in preference to her husband’s suggestion of Arthur. With just one look at her beautiful birthday present, she quickly changed her mind. Arthur Balcar-Smith was born on 14 July 2002, a day before Evonne’s birthday. They would share a unique and unbreakable bond for almost seven years. Arthur was 18-months-old, when a suspicious lump on his upper thigh changed his family’s life forever. Within 48 hours they would hear the words no parent ever expects. “Your son has cancer.” The next four years were a whirlwind. Arthur endured horrendous treatments and participated in every available clinical trial in search of the Holy Grail – a cure for his cancer. Evonne says she is still in awe of Arthur’s unwavering courage, his positivity and innate strength. “When he was born I had an overwhelming sense that he’d been here before. There was something very special about him. He was definitely an Arthur – or Arthy, as we came to call him. “He was such a strong little boy, both physically and in character. He had a wonderful personality and was determined and cheeky.” Throughout Arthur’s arduous treatments Evonne recalls that he never complained. “He constantly amazed us, and his doctors, persevering through treatments that I doubt many adults could endure and he showed no signs of side-effects.” With an attitude of ‘bring it on’ she said he continued to undergo new and experimental treatments. Although the treatments ultimately delayed the inevitable, and despite their agonising heartbreak when his remission ended after just 12 months, Evonne is grateful to have had the extra time to create everlasting memories. “He was my little blond-haired, blue-eyed cheeky kid who loved getting into mischief with his big brother Alex. He had a wicked little laugh that always signalled trouble. Like the time he ended up in hospital with straws stuck up his nose! Alex was two years older and had tried to take the blame but Arthy fessed up – he was just curious to see how many could fit,” she laughs. Surrounded by brothers – William and James had now joined his sibling band – Evonne tried to explain to Arthur that this next baby might be a girl. Horrified, he was adamant that there must be a mistake – exclaiming that he ‘didn’t like girls’. That changed the instant Evonne introduced him to Emma. ‘Okay, she’s cute, he’d said, but she’s my sister so that’s different’! For the next 12 months Evonne remembers how lovingly Arthur helped feed, bath and change his baby sister. “They were inseparable.” Emma was 13-monthsold when Arthur died. As a proud mum, Evonne is grateful that so many people were touched and moved by Arthy’s beautiful
nature, lively spirit and attitude to life. It’s a legacy she hopes to help continue. Arthur so desperately wanted to go to school but when the kids didn’t understand why he needed special nursing interventions throughout the day, he experienced rejection and isolation. After a rocky start, solved with some motherly intervention and advocacy for compassion through knowledge and understanding, everything changed. Evonne is proud of the way Arthy helped teach everyone so much about life and difference. “Once the kids knew about his condition and why he needed care during the day they accepted, respected and loved him. The transformation was remarkable,” she said. Arthur had always wanted to be a policeman and Evonne remains forever grateful to the NSW Police Riot Squad who helped him live his dream for a day. “The Images of him firing the water cannon and inspecting the troops with the Commissioner are such proud memories and the guard of honour formed at his funeral left the deepest imprint in my heart.” Evonne knows her son was wise beyond his years. He fought so very hard.
“Arthy wanted us to deposit his cancers in the tumour bank at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead so they might help in the search for a cure – just like King Arthur’s search for the Holy Grail. “He hoped that one day his tumours might help other sick kids get better. “It’s this legacy that I would love to see become reality and why I’m considering making a gift in my Will to support the work of the oncology team at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead,” Evonne explains. “We spent so much time in oncology and I know that everyone; the doctors, nurses, surgeons, therapists and researchers all did their very best. I can’t fathom how they keep going every day treating so many sick children. “I truly believe that we are all on this earth for a reason and my hope is that the legacy of Arthur’s life-journey will help other kids diagnosed with cancer.

“By planning for my Will now, my hope is that Arthur will never be forgotten, that his memory will be honoured and his hope for a cure will become reality,” Evonne said. Inspiration to take such action now is different for everyone, but as Evonne says “if enough people act today, tomorrow will be a brighter place”. Just like the bright yellow smiley face that was Arthur’s personal signature and even today resonates as a symbol of hope for Evonne and her family. In 2002 when Arthur was born his parents bought a block of land in Clarence, near Lithgow. Living in Penrith, they enjoyed magical times escaping to the country for camping weekends with bushwalks and bonfires. Their plans to build at Clarence would later be put on hold during Arthur’s treatment. Two years into his treatment Arthur helped his dad dig a hole so he and his mum could plant a Wollemi Pine on the property. This very special Wollemi Pine represented strength and courage and during every visit over the next two years Arthy carefully watered it and watched it grow. After his funeral Evonne commissioned a sculpture of a bright yellow smiley face to take pride of place beside Arthy’s precious Wollemi Pine. For the next 11 years, showered with lots of love and attention, the pine
continued to grow. Reaching more than two metres tall, it was a joyous reminder of Arthy’s determination. In a cruel twist of fate, last December ferocious bushfires swept through Clarence. Although sparing Evonne’s home they burned across the property tragically destroying a storage container that housed many of the kids’ toys and mementos. Thankfully, not all photos of Arthur were ruined. Sadly, his Wollemi Pine was also a victim. “We were so distressed yet utterly amazed that the yellow smiley face was unscathed and not even blackened, Evonne said. “Our neighbours lost their home yet ours was fine. We were all safe. Miracles do happen.” Hunkered down in a community shelter in Lithgow, a Sky News UK correspondent overheard Evonne sharing her story about the fate of Arthur’s Wollemi Pine with friends. Sky asked for permission to film the site on Christmas Day – the story aired worldwide. David van Berkel from Garden Express saw the story and contacted Evonne. Suspecting it was highly unlikely that Arthur’s Wollemi Pine would survive David generously sent her a new one. Evonne couldn’t bring herself to discard Arthur’s blackened pine. Six months on the new one is thriving. Remarkably, Arthur’s tree is also sprouting. It has seven – one for each year of his life – bright green, new shoots of life. Evonne is firmly convinced….miracles definitely do happen, hope never fades and you should never give up. Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.
Excel/UltraMax is a 36 stitch 10mm pile height synthetic surface, widely used throughout Australia by KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass in the construction of bowling greens. Manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, the Excel/ UltraMax is exclusive to Green Planet Grass and KCL Sports in Australia.
Jon Hastings from KCL Sports pioneered the use of polyethylene springlock yarns for the DryMax Pro synthetic bowling surface. Between them, KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have installed nearly 300 synthetic bowling greens. The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed
for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The Excel/UltraMax has been used in retirement and lifestyle villages for half size greens and in full size installations for bowling Clubs. As well as the Excel/UltraMax, KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass also offer a range of 12mm surfaces.
Both Green Planet Grass in Western Australia and KCL Sports on the east coast, offer a full maintenance programme to keep your synthetic grass bowling greens in peak condition for optimal performance and to extend the life of the green. This can include thatching to lift the pile, algae treatment, sand level adjustment and re-rolling of the surface.

KAREN MURPHY NAMED NATIONAL ASSISTANT COACH BY AIDAN DAVIS Australia’s most prolific BCiB Australian Jackaroos representative, Karen Murphy, has been confirmed as the new National Assistant Coach, the first woman to hold the coveted role in the sport of bowls. Murphy, who retired from international representation in 2019 after an illustrious career that covered more than two decades and more than 660 appearances, has been appointed to the full-time role, which helps oversee the full high performance (HP) contingent of squads and athletes.
A comprehensive background as an Advanced Coach and coaching clinics instructor, in addition to her knowledge of the HP landscape, insight into athlete wellbeing, focus on opposition analysis and professional approach to the sport as a whole, helped elevate Murphy from the competition. The position is crucial to the structure of the sport’s HP program, which will focus on the development of the next generation of elite bowlers and ultimately strives towards attaining gold medal success at the sport’s two benchmark international events, the World Bowls Championships and Commonwealth Games. Murphy steps into the Assistant role following in the footsteps of Gary Willis, who recently took the reins as the senior National Coach, having started her career in the sport at the same time as Willis more than 30 years ago.
After learning of her appointment, Murphy said she was appreciative of the opportunity and eager to get started in the role. “I’m very excited to start and looking forward to the challenge, I’ve 26

always enjoyed coaching and have a real passion for it,” Murphy said. “Knowing the players and the system will be a huge benefit for the position; and giving the players what they need is of the utmost importance. “There’s been a big change in the high performance program, with a new coach and now assistant, but we are hoping to bring a fresh approach and some new ideas. “It’s a support role and I’m there to support Gary in everything, these are really exciting times.”
National Coach Gary Willis said Murphy was a standout applicant and welcomed her appointment on behalf of the wider Jackaroos team.
“Having known Karen for a very long time, she is unquestionably the best person for this position and we’re thrilled that she will play an instrumental role in helping shape the future direction of the sport’s high performance players,” Willis said. “Karen brings so much to the table, having not only an understanding of what it takes to win just about every accolade the sport has to offer, but having also been an integral leader of the high performance program as a Vice-Captain, and having developed her coaching pedigree over many years. “There’s no better person to help guide the development of the nation’s best players, and the Australian Jackaroos contingent as a whole is excited to welcome Karen to the position.”
As part of her remit, Murphy will also oversee the management of the state-based Pathway Coaches, who are charged with the daily case management of Emerging Jackaroos, Pathways Jackaroos and Para-sport Jackaroos squad members across the nation. Bowls Australia congratulates Karen Murphy on her historic appointment as the first woman to hold the position of National Assistant Coach within the sport of bowls.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR MARK? When it comes to charitable giving Australia is one of the world's most generous countries. Without the generosity of people who leave a gift to charity in their Will, many of the charities we know and support would simply not exist. You don’t have to be rich, famous or eccentric to leave a gift. The reality is that most charitable gifts in Wills are left by thoughtful Australians – people just like you who simply want to make a difference and see their vision for the world live on. Including a charity in your Will is simple The process is the same as providing for your loved ones and if you are already updating or writing your Will, it won’t cost you anything. Your gift can be as little or as large as you want, and if done at the same time as writing your Will, can be done after other financial considerations like leaving money for loved ones and funeral costs have been accounted for. Making a Will is the only way you can be sure your wishes will be followed after you’re gone. Without a Will the law will dictate how your Estate is distributed, meaning part or all of your Estate may end up going to people you never intended to benefit. You can write your Will yourself, or you can engage a professional to write your Will for you. Making a Will is important and we encourage everyone to have a Will so that in the event of your passing, your loved ones know how to carry out your wishes.

Catherine’s Column
Diana died on the 31st August, 1997. Since her death, there have been numerous London Memorials created in her honour, including The Diana Memorial Playground at Kensington Palace. The Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, The Diana Memorial Walk at St. James Palace and a Memorial Garden known as The White Garden was also planted at Kensington Palace to mark the 20th Anniversary of her death………………..
Many royal fans vividly remember the day of Diana’s funeral. Millions of fans gathered in the streets of London to pay their last respects along the route that Diana’s coffin took to Westminster Abbey. The world watched mesmerised as her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, Prince Charles, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and Diana’s brother Earl Spencer walked behind her coffin. Many years later Prince Harry, who was just twelve at the time, referred to walking in that procession as a task “NO CHILD SHOULD BE ASKED TO DO.’’
Over the years Prince Harry has been very vocal about his struggles with Mental Health issues, admitting on several occasions that he has since sought the help of mental health experts to help cope with the loss of his mother.
A statue of Diana, Princess of Wales will be installed in the sunken garden of Kensington Palace to mark what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday. The statue will be unveiled on Diana’s actual birthday, 1st July 2021. Her sons Prince William and Prince Harry have stated that they hope the permanent sculpture of their mother will help all those who visit Kensington Palace “reflect on her life and her legacy’’ as “our mother touched so many lives.’’

Unfortunately, The Royal family is now facing a new crisis as a direct result of Harry and Meghan’s recent controversial tell-all interview with Ophrah Winfrey. Harry’s concerns regarding Meghan’s mental health and the indication that he and Prince William were on different paths, have caused an undeniable rift in the Royal Family. He also added fuel to the fire by admitting that the relationship with his father, Prince Charles was strained. Hopefully, the recent death of Prince Philip will enable The Royal Family to put their differences aside and support the grieving monarch.
Diana’s final resting place is in the grounds of her family home in Althorp Park. The actual area for burial is on an island in an ornamental lake known as “The Oval’’ within Althorp’s pleasure Garden.

Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. As a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone
over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

CAN THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY SURVIVE YET ANOTHER ROYAL SCANDAL?
Over the years Britain’s Royal Family has endured numerous royal scandals that have caused irretrievable damage to the monarchy, through a series of bad judgments made by several members of the Royal Household………………………. The abdication in 1936 of King Edward V111 left the world shocked and conflicted, when it became clear that the King was choosing passion over protocol. Fast forward to 1992, The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson managed to cause by far, one of the most scandalous conundrums with her “ToeGate’’ debacle. Her outrageous behaviour, of having her toes sucked by her financial adviser while being photographed topless in the South of France, resulted in the demise of her marriage and the end of her relationship with The Royal Family. In 1997, the world was brought to a standstill when it was announced that Diana, Princess of Wales had died in a car crash in Paris. The enormous loss of Diana resulted in an extraordinary outpouring of grief for her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, her family and the world who loved and admired her. Nevertheless, the world watched on as both William and Harry grew into extraordinary young men. Both William and Harry became advocates for Mental Health Awareness and several charities including Harry’s association with The Invictus Games through his work in the Military. During that time a survey undertaken in Great Britain, revealed that the most popular Royal was indeed Prince Harry. An unsurprising outcome considering he has inherited many of his late mother’s humanitarian qualities. Prince Harry married former American actress Meghan Markle in 2018. However, by January 2020 the couple announced they would be stepping down from all Royal duties and relocating to North America to become financially independent. The couple has since moved to California, signed a multi-million dollar deal with both Netflix and Spotify and bought a $14 million home in Montecito, California. Unfortunately, they recently took part in a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the interview both Harry and Meghan made allegations accusing The Royal Family and the family’s courtiers of turning their backs on Meghan Markle while she was experiencing suicidal thoughts. Consequently, as a direct result of racist remarks involving the colour of baby Archie’s skin. Prince Harry also added

to the conversation by declaring that his father, Prince Charles doesn’t return his calls, and that both his father and brother, Prince William are trapped and can’t escape like he has. He then went on to declare that he was also trapped, however did not know it at the time. Unfortunately, the couple has now been savagely criticised by the British press who have labelled the interview as “total hypocrisy.’’ Prompting controversial critic Piers Morgan to declare “This interview is an absolutely disgraceful betrayal of the Queen and the Royal Family. I expect all this vile, destructive self- serving nonsense from Meghan Markle – but for Harry to let her take down his family and the monarchy like this is shameful. The Queen responded to the allegations by declaring:-
“THE WHOLE FAMILY IS SADDENED TO LEARN THE FULL EXTENT OF HOW CHALLENGING THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN FOR HARRY & MEGHAN. THE ISSUES RAISED, PARTICULARLY THAT OF RACE, ARE CONCERNING. WHILE SOME RECOLLECTIONS MAY VARY, THEY ARE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY AND WILL BE ADDRESSED BY THE FAMILY PRIVATELY.’’ Queen Elizabeth’s response to allegations of racism within The Royal Family has been interpreted as a masterstroke in Britain, calling into question the couple’s claim of racism while vowing to take it seriously. The Queen’s carefully worded response and reference of ‘SOME RECOLLECTIONS MAY VARY’ clearly indicates that The Royals dispute the couple’s version of events. Despite wars, family dramas and abdication the Royal Family has continued to endure throughout history. Only time will tell if this latest rift in The Royal Family can be resolved.

Family Funding: Ensuring Good Outcomes Kevin Conlon, CEO -Equity Release Industry Council
The familiar phrase “Bank of Mum and Dad”, refers to the common practice of parents providing financial support to their children (often to enable them to achieve home ownership) but increasingly, it is the adult children of elderly parents that find themselves in the position of needing to provide support. In this article, we explore the options for accessing wealth stored in the family home to meet the needs of family members as they progress through the various phases of life and we make the discovery that successful families focus on outcomes rather than money.
The reliance on housing wealth in retirement is well illustrated in the Productivity Commission’s research where, wealth falls from $1.2m at age 65-74yrs to $851,000 at age 75yrs. This decline of nearly 30%, reveals the proportion of wealth that is stored in the family home (70%).
But first, let’s take a step back and look at the big picture of meeting the challenge of funding an extended retirement as we live longer and more active lives.
Equity Release: Clear Facts and Better Choices
The facts about retirement in Australia are quite clear. We are living longer, more active lives in retirement, most of us own the home we live in and we want to age in place.
This is where funding our extended retirement becomes challenging as we have relatively low levels of savings and our personal wealth is largely invested (70%) in a single, illiquid asset... the family home.
Whilst equity release might provide a good solution for the so-called asset rich but cash poor, until recently the choices on offer have been quite limited. The good news is that improved outcomes from using equity release as an effective retirement funding solution are being achieved, as better choices emerge. One of the key outcomes from an increased use of home equity is that Government spending can be focussed on those most in need of support in retirement. Currently, 12% of older Australians live in either residential aged communities or retirement villages, 7% struggle to meet the expense of private rental, 2% live in mobile home communities and only 6% receive social housing. The fortunate 73% own their home and have choices that can improve their standard of living in retirement.
Again, the facts are clear, our standard of living declines in retirement as quite predictably, our weekly income falls from quite an early age (45-54yrs), and our limited savings become exhausted, over time. 38

Equity release refers to the use of financial arrangements that provide a property owner with funds derived from the value of their property while enabling them to retain the right to occupy their home.
There are a number of ways to access your home equity: Reverse Mortgage
You stay in your home and don't have to make repayments while living there. Interest charged on the loan compounds over time, so it gets bigger and adds to the amount you borrow. The interest rate is likely to be higher than on a standard home loan. You repay the loan in full, including interest and fees, when you or your deceased estate sell your home.
Home Reversion
per cent of those aged 70 and over having no super.
However, the home reversion provider only pays you a reduced ('discounted') amount for the share you sell. When you sell your home, you pay the provider their share of the proceeds. The more your home goes up in value, the more you'll pay the provider when you sell it.
Karen’s focus in life has always been directed towards her children and whilst they are supportive and caring towards their mother, there has been considerable tension over a series of family loans that have never been repaid.
Home reversion allows you to sell a proportion of the future value of your home while you live there. You get a lump sum and keep the remaining proportion of your home equity. It's not a loan, so you don't pay interest.
Equity Release Agreement
An equity release agreement allows you to sell a portion of the value of your home. You get a lump sum or instalment payments in return. You live in your home and pay fees for the portion you've sold. A bit like paying rent on that part of your home that you have sold. Your proportion of equity reduces over time, to cover the fees you pay.
Despite these difficulties, Karen now owns the family home and as a healthy, energetic 75yr old, she is determined to live well during the active phase of her retirement years and wants to improve her financial position so that she can prepare for the future.
Karen’s three children have acknowledged that the outstanding family loans need to be resolved and want to see their mother live the life she deserves.
Pension Loans Scheme
The Pension Loans Scheme lets eligible older Australians get a voluntary non-taxable fortnightly loan from the Government. The loan is secured against real estate you, or your partner, own in Australia and you can choose how much you offer as security.
The Pension Loans Scheme is not paid as a lump sum. Your combined pension and loan payments cannot exceed 1.5 times the maximum fortnightly pension rate. You must repay the loan and all costs and accrued interest to the Government. Family Funding
Family loans are not a small problem with researchers estimating that the informal lending market between families and friends is worth A$1.6 billion a year. Whether it is to support business ventures or provide a home deposit, family loans are often not documented and despite clear promises of repayment, that expectation typically relies on a moral rather than a legal obligation.
Family loans and gifts sometimes appear similar, but they are treated differently in taxation and law and are particularly contentious issues in family law. Sadly, lending money to family members is often expensive in terms of emotional cost. Traditional Equity Release strategies enable “Asset Rich but Cash Poor” retirees to live well in retirement and provide family support without having to sell their home and move away but this support must work both ways and a new equity release product from DomaCom now enables family members to assist their elderly parents by becoming investors in the family home rather than face the uncertainties and risks associated with informal family loans. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this is through an example.
The DomaCom Equity Release Solution
The DomaCom Calculator
Using the DomaCom Calculator available at domacom.com.au, we can estimate the expected outcomes for Karen based on a number of assumptions. Example One: “Standard Transaction”
We assume that Karen’s home will increase in value at an annual rate of 3% and the standard Service Fee percentage will apply to the transaction. Expected Outcomes:
Karen will receive a $46,000 Lump Sum payment and a $450pm Income stream for the next 10yrs.
Karen’s remaining home equity when she is 95yrs, is expected to be $1,047,255. Example Two: “Family Funding”
This example demonstrates the key advantage of the DomaCom Senior Equity Release Product whereby, Karen’s children can offer to receive no return on the money they are providing to their mother. In these circumstances, a Service Fee of only 1.4% would apply: Expected Outcomes:
Again, Karen will receive a $46,000 Lump Sum payment and a $450pm Income stream for the next 10yrs.
Karen’s remaining home equity when she is 95yrs, is expected to be $1,293,753. Example Three: “Worst Case”
Karen wants to take a “worst case” view that her property will not increase in value at all, and her children will be unwilling to fund the equity release at a rate less than the applicable Service Fee Percentage. Expected Outcomes: Let’s examine the family circumstances of Karen, a mother of three adult children, who recently lost her husband Steve, unfortunately leaving behind very little in the way of savings or superannuation.
Note: The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey shows that this situation is quite common with over 60
Once again, Karen will still receive a $46,000 Lump Sum payment and a $450pm Income stream for the next 10yrs. Even under this “Worst Case” scenario, Karen’s remaining home equity when she is 95yrs, is expected to be $579, 840.

Can you imagine taking your child to the doctor thinking she just has tonsillitis, only to discover she has leukaemia? In mid-2018, Mila had symptoms of what was thought to be influenza, coupled with unexplained bruising. She just didn’t seem to be able to recover from her illness and was soon showing other symptoms like a bloody nose and high temperatures. As weeks went by she started losing the colour in her skin, and her lips became blue. In September 2018, Mila was transferred to the Queensland Children’s Hospital. A day later, Mila had surgery for a peripherally–inserted central catheter (PICC) line insertion, followed by a lumbar puncture with intrathecal chemo and a bone marrow aspirate. Two days later Mila started day one of her long journey with chemotherapy. Mila had one month of intensive chemotherapy in Brisbane followed by ongoing treatment and appointments at both Queensland Children’s Hospital and Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Now Mila is on a journey of maintenance and recovery. She has a two-year plan including hospital treatments and appointments, oral medication and regular blood tests. Mila has a permanent vascular access device (port-a-cath) inserted into one of her major veins so she can receive chemotherapy. During Mila’s hospital admissions, she enjoyed entertainment services from the Children’s Hospital Foundation including pet therapy, music therapy and special entertainment events.
Mila’s mother, J’nae suggested she take some time off kindy but Mila would cry and insist she was feeling better. In term three of kindy, her health took a steep decline – she had lost weight, her appetite and had become even more pale. A week after her fifth birthday in September, Mila was so fatigued she would spend most of the day on the couch and would refuse to eat or drink. It got to the point where Mila’s legs were so sore that she didn’t want to walk. Mila’s mum was convinced it was a virus and was concerned that it had not yet gone away, but never thought for a moment it could be leukaemia. After her first doctor’s appointment, the doctor prescribed antibiotics, thinking Mila had tonsillitis. After a second trip to Mila’s regular GP, she was admitted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital where she was given fluids and blood transfusions. It was during this admission that the family found out Mila had leukaemia.

LEST WE FORGET “ANZAC DAY’’ CELEBRATED ON THE 25th APRIL EACH YEAR. ANZAC DAY is a national Day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars.’’ However, it was originally devised to honour the members of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served in “The Gallipoli Campaign’’ during the First World War. (1914- 1918)
The Gallipoli Campaign was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, from February, 1915 to January, 1916. The campaign resulted in approximately 250,000 casualties on each side. During the campaign, Australia and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an allied expedition that set out to capture The Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The objective of the campaign was to capture Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) which was the capital of The Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The strategy behind this move was to open the way to The Black Sea for Allied Navies. Unfortunately The Anzacs force landed at Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from The Ottoman Army. A childhood introduction, a challenge in adulthood and a gift for the future. Dorothy shares her inspiration for leaving a gift in her Will.

Having seen the Salvos in action – caring for people in need – Dorothy decided to include a gift to The Salvation Army in supporters called Honoured Friends. “I hope my bequest to The Salvation Army will provide rehabilitation for somebody who desperately needs support with their drug and/or alcohol addiction,” she says. “Addiction is a cunning, baffling and powerful disease. HAYMAN, SMALLACOMBE CREATE HISTORY AT DANDENONG BY BOWLS AUSTRALIA History was created at Dandenong Club as the 2020 Australian Champion of Champions came to a close this afternoon. Dawn Hayman (NSW) and Trystan Smallacombe (NT) claimed the respective women’s and men’s titles at the long-awaited event, postponed due to implications of COVID-19 in 2020. Victories to the pair created two pieces of history.
Having won the 2019 instalment of the event, Hayman becomes the first woman to secure multiple national Champion of Champions titles; and just the third person to claim back-to-back crowns (Scott Thulborn 2014-15, Lee Schraner 2017-2018). Hayman said it was an honour to have claimed the title for a second time. “I’m extremely happy with how I’ve gone the past couple of days,” Hayman said.
“I was confident in the way I’d been playing but with everyone else I was expecting to get beaten, so to go through undefeated is a huge honour.
“I’ve had some good results coming into this and I’ve been extremely happy with how I’m going with singles.” Hayman was home and hosed before the final round commenced, with an unassailable lead after remaining undefeated from her six encounters.
Her final clash came against fellow undefeated BCiB Australia Jackaroo Carla Krizanic, with the Wollongong native storming home with the last ten shots to win 21-12. Krizanic would finish with the silver medal, with Queensland’s Chloe Stewart claiming the bronze medallion.
Smallacombe will return home as the pride of the Northern Territory, becoming the first male Australian Champion of Champions victor, and just the second Territorian to have done so, following in the footsteps of Colleen Orr 2017.
He held on for a 21-15 victory over Queenslander Ben Walsh in one of the tightest matches of the event.
The Darwin Club representative edged out Corey Wedlock on points differential and was filled with relief after a tense day. “I’m stuck for words, I’m so proud of how I’ve played over the last couple of days, it was a real battle of nerves in that last match,” he said. “The last fifteen minutes before the last match I was extremely nervous, I didn’t eat all my lunch in case I saw it later on.
“It’s the biggest highlight of my career, to have this national success and it’s up there with the five-a-side I won in Moama with some great mates.” Smallacombe’s morning started in tense fashion, falling 21-8 to South Australian Adrian Green before he recorded victories over Taelyn Male and Walsh.
Corey Wedlock took out the silver medal with Victorian Rhys Jeffs claiming bronze. Dandenong Club will return to the national stage when the 2020 Australian Championships ignites from May 24-28. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

John’s first involvement in the music Industry began in 1967, with The Band “Elm Tree.’’ Unfortunately,
the band only achieved moderate success around Sydney. However, entered the 1971 NSW heats of “Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds’’ and managed to make the Sydney finals. (SUCCESS) “THE JESUS CHRIST REVOLUTION’’ In 1972, John appeared in the Melbourne production of The Jesus Christ Revolution. His outstanding performance attracted the attention of Legendary Rock Entrepreneur Harry M. Miller. Miller subsequently offered him a role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Super Star, alongside future super stars John English, Doug Parkinson, Stevie Wright and Marcia Hines.
SOLO CAREER During this time John’s solo career as a performer had already started to gain momentum and he was offered a solo recording deal. In late 1972, he was given the opportunity to record “Pasadena,’’ a song written by George Young and Harry Vanda. This resulted in JPY’s long association with “hit-making’’ music powerhouses Vanda and 46

Young. He would then go on to achieve enormous success as a solo recording artist. 1974 – 1987 Young’s career was also boosted significantly by his regular appearances as a performer and guest host on the ABC Series Countdown between 1974-1987.
The 1978 release of the Vanda and Young song “Love is in the Air’’ was a mammoth turning point in Young’s career, and created mass hysteria amongst fans around the world. Resulting in phenomenal record sales and propelling him even further into the spot light and super stardom almost overnight.
The staggering success of “Love is in the Air’’ which became JPY’s signature tune ensured that he has remained in the spotlight for over five decades. A new version of the song was featured as a theme song for Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 debut film “Strictly Ballroom’’ giving John Paul Young another massive career revival. He also had the privilege of performing the song at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Young became an Aria recipient in 2009 (Australian Recording Industry Association) and has sold over
4 million records worldwide, making him one of the most successful stars Australia has produced.
In 2012 Young was awarded a “Medal of the Order of Australia’’ (OAM) for services to the performing Arts as a singer and songwriter. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LEAVE A LEGACY IN YOUR WILL? A legacy is a donation to charity that is left in your Will. It’s also known as a bequest or gift. When someone leaves a legacy in their Will, it's a very special gift for the receiving charity because it can help fund important longterm projects that will make a deep and meaningful impact on many people's lives. Although 25% of Australians say they would like to leave a legacy in their Will, lack of public awareness and support means that only 7.5% follow through. This is a shame, because leaving a gift in your Will is a wonderful way to keep helping those in need and ensure that your legacy lives on.
If you’ve ever thought about what your legacy could mean to people living in vulnerable situations, here’s everything you need to know — as well as some helpful advice on how to include a gift in your own Will. Why leave a legacy in your Will? Across the world, millions of people are living with inequality and poverty. Tragically, already vulnerable communities are facing increasing threats such as climate damage, food scarcity and a worsening global health crises — making the people and programs which support them more essential than ever. By leaving a legacy in your Will, you’re helping charities undertake their vital work, while enabling the values that you carried through life to continue long into the future.
Unfortunately, there is a misguided perception that gifts left in Wills are only for the wealthy, but this is simply not the case. Whether it’s a large legacy or small, every gift works towards the same goal of making the world a brighter place for future generations.

How your legacy helps charities The charity you choose to leave a legacy with, needs to have your absolute trust so that you have peace of mind knowing that your gift helps the people and causes that need it most. Each charity will have their own guidelines around how legacies support their work. But at Oxfam, we always strive to be completely transparent in our distribution and mission.
When you leave a legacy with us, we ensure that it’s efficiently spent where it’s needed most — and will make the greatest impact. However, if there’s a cause or program of ours that you particularly want to support, you can contact our Bequests team to discuss your preferences. How to choose a charity to leave a legacy with It’s advisable that you leave a legacy with a charity that represents a cause which resonates with you and your life values. If you’re not sure which charity represents you, think deeply about your core values and build your research around them. Are you someone who believes that poverty needs to be tackled head on, are you a champion for women’s rights, or concerned about our climate crisis and its impact on our planet and communities? No matter if it’s one cause or many that you wish to support, by asking yourself these questions and reaching out to different Bequest teams for information, you will find the right charity to fit you and your values. How to leave a legacy in your Will Whether you have an existing Will, or this is your first, it’s never too early or late to start planning — or even writing — your legacy. But how do you go about it? Depending on how complex your finances are, you can choose to work with a solicitor who will guide you through the process. You can also try a DIY Wills kit that you can download online or pick up from Australia Post and better still, use a trusted online Wills services like Safewill.com
If you have an existing Will, you or your solicitor can update it with an amendment known as a codicil. This allows you to leave a legacy to a charity like Oxfam without having to go through the process of writing your Will again.
SPECIAL BEQUEST FEATURE -REAL STORIES REAL PEOPLE
What types of legacies can I leave in my Will? An important consideration when leaving a legacy in your Will is the type you’d like to leave. Your gift should only be an amount you’re comfortable with, after you’ve taken care of your loved ones. For this reason, many people choose to leave a percentage of their estate to charity rather than a specific value. This is because the value of an estate naturally fluctuates, and in many cases grows over time. What may feel like a small percentage to leave now, could appreciate in value and go on to positively impact the lives of many. The types of legacies you can leave in your Will include: • Residuary bequests • Pecuniary bequests • Specific bequests
• Contingent bequests • Percentage of estate • Whole estate
Should I leave a legacy in my Will? No matter if it’s big or small, leaving a gift to charity in your Will is a fulfilling and impactful way to ensure that your legacy lives on through causes that make the world a better place. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for those who wished to donate in their lifetime but didn’t necessarily have the means to do so.
Right now, many of the challenges facing our planet and fellow humans can feel overwhelming, but by leaving even a small gift to Oxfam in your Will, you’ll be empowered in the knowledge that you are joining a global movement of people working hard to tackle poverty and inequality through practical, innovative solutions.
And there’s no greater legacy than that.

The Australian Music industry is mourning the death of Music Powerhouses DOUG PARKINSON and MICHAEL GUDINSKI.
In 1972 Gudinski formed what would become the highly successful “Mushroom record label.’’ Thanks to the cult band “SKYHOOKS’’ and the release of their album “Living in the 70’s’’ which sold a quarter of a million records. Mushroom Records was able to prove to the world that Australian bands could compete globally. In the early 80’s,Michael again achieved enormous success with the quirky New Zealand Band “SPLIT ENZ.’’ They became the first New Zealand band to achieve world-wide success and recorded four number one albums in New Zealand and three number one albums in Australia between 1980 and 1982. Next on the agenda for Gudinski was the discovery of POP PRINCESS KYLIE MINOQUE. Gudinski signed Minoque to the Mushroom record label after witnessing Kylie perform an impromptus version of “The Locomotion’’ at a football charity event. Minoque went on to achieve enormous success as a recording artist, and has since sold over 70 million records worldwide. Gudinski’s association with JIMMY BARNES, resulted in Barnes becoming one of Australia’s most successful recording artists. As a direct result of Gudinski’s guidance, Barnes has sold more records in Australia than any other local artist. He has also enjoyed 17 number one albums and delivered some of the music industry’s most intense and iconic live performances. Gudinski enormous influence in the music industry grew from his unwavering passion for music and supporting the artists he truly believed in. In 1979 Gudinski also established “The Frontier Touring Company’’ with his old comrade Michael Chugg. The company achieved phenomenal success by importing to Australia the likes of The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, The Foo Fighters and Bruce Springsteen to name but a few. A state memorial service was held at The Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, 24th March 2021 to honour the star maker, promoter and music industry giant. Legendary recording artist DOUG PARKINSON was widely considered to be one of the most influential singer/ songwriters in the history of contemporary music. Parkinson’s musical career lasted a staggering 56 years. Parkinson began singing while still at school. However, by 1966 he had teamed up with some of the country’s best musical talent and formed psychedelic rock band “THE QUESTIONS.’’
MICHAEL GUDINSKI was “one of the most significant and powerful players’’ in the Australian Music industry. He began his music industry career as a teenage dance promoter and band roadie. He then went on to establish “The Consolidated Rock Artist Agency’’ in 1970 with his friend Michael Browning. Browning, would later become the first manager of SUPER GROUP AC/DC.

The band began exploring psychedelic rock, which established them as one of the more innovative bands around the country. They went on to famously support “THE WHO’’ (one of the most famous rock bands of the 60’s) on their National tour of Australia in 1968. In 1969 Parkinson formed a new band “DOUG PARKINSON IN FOCUS’’ they recorded a cover of The Beatles song “DEAR PRUDENCE’’ which topped the charts and resulted in worldwide fame and recognition. By 1973, Parkinson had already launched a successful solo career and appeared in the Australian stage production of “TOMMY.’’
By the early 80’s Parkinson had become a much-loved stage performer. He then starred in the hugely successful stage production of Jesus Christ Super Star as Judas. Parkinson continued performing in stage shows and live performances for over five decades. He will be remembered as having the most soulful voice in Australian Music History. REMEMBERING THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF NANCY-BIRD WALTON (OBE) & (AO) 1915 - 2009 the pioneering Australian Aviator known as “The Angel of the outback’’ and the founder and patron of The Australian Women’s Pilots ********Association********* In 1933 at the age of 18, Nancy-Bird Walton took flying lessons from Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. He had just opened a pilot’s school near Sydney and Nancy-Bird was among his first pupils. She later recalled that, at the time most women who learned to fly did so for recreation. However, Nancy-Bird planned to fly for a living. In the 1934, she became a fully qualified pilot at the age of 19, and become the youngest Australian woman to gain a pilot’s licence. That year she also became the youngest commercially licenced female pilot in the British Commonwealth.
In 1935 she was hired to operate a flying medical service in outback NSW, named “The Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme.’’ Nancy’s own plane a “Gipsy Moth’’ was used as an air ambulance. She later bought a better-equipped aircraft and began operating the first aerial baby clinic during World War 11, servicing Queensland which as yet was not included in The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. During World War 11, Nancy-Bird began training women in skills needed to back up the men flying in The Royal Australian Air Force.

The beauty of the air, from the air……….. You haven’t seen Australia unless you see it from the air. The coastline, the colours of the inland. The claypans, the forests. It’s just all so beautiful. DISASTER, DEATH & A ROCK STAR... Covid-19 has turned many lives upside down, but it has also helped spawn adventure. People started hobbies to fill the bleak days of enforced lock down, and one of them was me. I used 2020 to dig into the history of my house and found some extraordinary surprises. My House is an unassuming two-bedroom terrace located in Sydney’s Inner West. It is over one-hundred years old, and this fact was not lost on me during the Spring of 2018, when my husband and I began to experience extreme paranormal activity.
I moved into the house on my own in 2013, and remarkably always felt watched. It was an uncomfortable feeling of someone or something literally staring through the rear window of the house at night. In the evenings, I would generally watch TV and doze off. Then wake up startled with an unrelenting “Ooom’’ sound in my ear. I would look at the clock, it was always 10.45PM. My two dogs would often track something moving along the hall and through the sitting room of my tiny terrace, even though there was nothing there. Baffled and bewildered, I couldn’t believe what was happening. However, I chose to ignore it and pretended it wasn’t there. Things eventually died down, or perhaps I got used to it. There was nothing further to note on the paranormal front until my partner, now my husband moved in. We would sometimes hear a disembodied female voice around the house, in particular the hallway. The voice was too clear to be coming from next door, and she kept telling our two dogs to “shut up’’ and instructing our cat to go to dreamland. We rolled with it until the Spring of 2018, when things decided to kick off in major fashion. Over the next few weeks we experienced various footsteps running up the hall and through the house, an array of disembodied voices, a candlestick that smashed against the opposite wall from where it was thrown and further disembodied voices screeching through the night. The dark, lingering presence from the back of the house had also grown in intensity and proximity, with a thick chill descending on the house.
After some intense research, we ended up shifting the lingering entity through the services of a reputable psychic. She had us saying prayers, sagging the house and conducting a ritual. We heard a dreadful otherworldly scream and the dark chill finally lifted. Understandably, the whole traumatic incident played on our minds, and with COVID -19 giving me the time I needed. I decided to investigate who had lived in our house, and who could have been the cause of the ghostly happenings. My first port of call was the internet. I typed in my address and among the real estate posts was a link to a family history site, with electoral roll data on my house.
A BRUSH WITH FAME... Records for at least six residents popped up, with names, years and occupations attached. I was starting to form an impression of the living history of my house. First up, in 1911, a tailor, a widow and through the 1960’s and 70’s a succession of tenants with European names, each reflecting the post-war migration that had changed the area. And finally, the strangest record yet, a bone’ fide rock star. His occupation literally said “Musician,’’ further research on google confirmed that this musician was still very much alive, and had toured with some of the biggest acts at that time. I contacted his agent, and soon received an enthusiastic response from the star himself. Yes! The email started. I lived in your house in the 70’s, we bought it for $19,000 AUS. The email then went on to discuss the décor, the neighbours and the explicit details of certain recreational pursuits that were practised while living there.
The musician in question is Brian Bethell, bass player with “The 69’ers,’’ Nine Below Zero and The Blow Monkeys. He also played bass for Richard Clapton’s classic “Girls on the Avenue.’’ After reading his memorable email, I envisioned Brian Bethell and the band strategically discussing the musical arrangements and lyrics relating to “Girls on the Avenue’’ in my sitting room in the presence of our resident ghosts. CONCLUSION... I also found there had been a death in my house, a beloved husband and father had passed away in the hallway. Apparently the children had run for help. A small part of me wondered if the sound of running footsteps in the hallway had been a literal echo of that event. However the most terrifying records also showed the grisly details of a murder that literally happened around the corner and the bizarre details of a nearby cemetery that had been moved, bone by bone further away as residential Sydney pushed her tendrils out into the bush. Do you know this amputee Anzac? The Australian War Memorial wants your help.
By Tegan Osborne and Clare Wright for Shooting The Past
“I would be delighted if one day I did come across a letter that spoke of somebody whose injuries mirror the gentleman in this photo, and we can create that story around him,” Ms Neale says. Stoicism and the cheerful wounded
During WWI, photographs like this would not have made the papers — as no images of Australian soldiers in combat were published during the war. Captured in sepia, the young man in the photograph sits alone in a grassy field, on an upholstered armchair. Behind him stands a white tent and beyond that still, a dense row of trees. In his Army-issue slouch hat, he is clearly an Australian soldier. But the most striking — and perhaps disturbing — aspect of the image, is what is missing. This soldier has no hands.
Despite this, his lips curve slightly upwards in a shape akin to a smile. On his lap lies a board and some paper — between what is left of his forearms, he grips a pen as though writing a letter. It's a curious and compelling image — but very little is known about the soldier in the photo. Kerry Neale, a curator with the Australian War Memorial's heraldry and technology collection, explains that the exact provenance of the photograph is unclear.
"This is one of the H series collections, which means it's [been at the AWM] pretty much … since the memorial's inception," Ms Neale says.
"It probably came in about the late 1920s or 1930s … we don't know this gentleman's name or the story behind his wounding. So it's actually a bit of a mystery photograph."
But according to Professor Stanley, they’ve since become integral to our understanding of who the Anzacs were.
“I think the Anzac legend is partly built on those photographs,” he says.
“If you look at Charles Bean’s Anzac book of 1916, which is one of the foundations of the canon, they’re extolling … the virtues of heroism, stoicism, the cheerful wounded and so on.”
What photos from the time don’t readily illustrate are the horrors WWI soldiers endured, as for the most part, they were sanitised for public consumption. “We can’t see his bloody stumps. We can just see him making good with the pencil,” Professor Stanley says.
“So we have to try and interrogate those war photographs, and subvert their meaning — because they’re meant to tell us certain things. But they can tell us, as with this one … other things, if we ask questions about them.”
Popeye
What Ms Neale can say is that the photo was taken during World War I, at the No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield, England.
And as with many photographs in the AWM's collections from the time, it came either from official photography records of the war or was donated — possibly by family.
‘I’ve been quite lucky, mum’
In the photograph, the wounded soldier appears to be scrawling a letter. So what, and to whom, might he be writing?
Ms Neale explains the AWM has many letters from WWI soldiers in its collection — some of which were written to explain battle wounds to family and friends at home. And there are definite themes that emerge.
“Quite often … they’ll start by comparing their situation to other men,” she says.
“If perhaps they’re in a hospital ward they’ll say ‘Oh, mother you can’t imagine the state of the chap two beds down. He can’t talk, he’s lost both eyes. I, on the other hand, have been quite lucky. I’ve lost my leg, but mum.’ And they’ll try and mediate that way … which is quite remarkable.” Ms Neale says it’s possible that somewhere among the many letters in the AWM’s collection, lies the very letter being written by the man in the photo.

LEARNING FROM LEGENDS AN UNEXPECTED UPSIDE TO A DEEP DARK TIME DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS The implications and repercussions of the COVID19 pandemic have been too numerous to count, and have reached into many different lives and industries. The performing arts industry has been heavily hit. Productions and tours have been cancelled or forced to conform to social isolation restrictions so rigid, that they barely break even. My own band “THIRTY FRAMES A SECOND’’ has been forced to take a hiatus from performing, a forced stop when we were just starting to gain momentum. While many musicians have returned to their writing books and home recording studios (even this has its limitations) with the creation of music being hampered by the staggering inability to perform live. It has been a life altering and dark period.
However, desperation is often the mother of invention and, as a music-fan and musician, I have seen some of these innovations firsthand as stars reach out to connect and continue to work.
Part of me wishes I had invested in video conferencing and file sharing platforms in 2019, which subsequently resulted in 2020 being their year to boom. They were a way to bring people together and to easily share ideas pertaining to progress made by others.
Several artists have brought crowds together to sing as choirs and other artists have used video conferencing to extend their unique and expert knowledge to willing pupils.
I have admired SARAH BROWN for as long as I can remember. Predominately as backing vocalist for music industry giants including BRYAN FERRY, SIMPLY RED and currently SIMPLE MINDS.
She has always stood out to me as the epitome of female power and control. Her deep, strong voice adding a delicious flavour to all sorts of songs. So, when I saw her advertisement offering lessons. I knew I wanted to learn from this woman.
I wanted to learn how to become less wavery, to pick my melody line with confidence and in short, to sound like a free, powerful version of me, rather than a pale version of someone else. I made the call, and as the appointed first hour rolled around, my hands started to sweat. What was I doing meeting my idol, I wondered? What if we didn’t get along? What if she hated my voice? That terrified me the most. That one word from her could implode something I really enjoyed (writing & making music) Didn’t people say you should never meet your idols? I’m sure someone had, somewhere along the line. It certainly felt true.

However, I clicked “connect’’ and Sarah Brown beamed onto my screen. And yes, it was a surreal moment, and yes I was nervous. As the call progressed, my throat constricted, my chest flattened and my speaking voice went up two octaves and escalated up ten-fold.
However, Sarah was able to cut through it all. One of the first things she said in her kind voice was to tell me to “put the label to one side.’’ “Everything you have seen of me, read about me, put it all to one side. So we can work together.’’ And I did, as soon as she said those words. I began to look at Sarah as what she was. A person with great expertise and understanding, who could work with me, help me learn just a little of what she knows. And she has not disappointed.
Sarah has instilled in me a love of my gift, rather than a fear of what might go wrong. She has helped me to anchor myself and start to cut away the nerves that hampered my true expression of emotion. It is not just me who has benefitted perversely from the lockdown. The drummer in my band is ecstatic to be also receiving lessons from “SIMPLE MINDS’’ and Kelly Jones’s drummer Cherisse Osei. Sarah Brown and Cherisse Osei continue to offer their expertise. We use the unique skills and experience of military veterans, emergency services specialists and civilians - our members, to respond to natural disasters. Since 2017 we have brought help and hope to countless disaster ravaged Australian communities.
WE HELP PEOPLE ON THEIR WORST DAY
Our recovery efforts include labour intensive jobs such as clearing access to properties, chainsawing down burnt trees, removing large items of debris and sifting for lost momentos.
Aside from bringing real hands on help, our members are always ready to share a story or offer a comforting hug. The positive impact we can bring to a community after a natural disaster is real and emotional. We help communities to move on and begin to build resilience.
A SENSE OF PURPOSE FOR VETERANS
We offer a unique opportunity for our members to be part of a humanitarian effort. Our veteran led members are exceptionally well suited to lead. They are built to serve.
