SHELDON BAGS NZ NATIONAL SINGLES TITLE

Team Henselite's Sheldon Bagrie-Howley has won the Men's NZ National Singles title after defeating two-time winner, Shannon McIlroy, 21-18 in a thrilling all-Henselite final in Auckland.

The 27-year-old Gore bowler, became the first Southlander to win the Men's NZ National Singles since it was first contested in 1915.

Shannon McIlroy was out of the blocks early in devastating touch on the Browns Bay green, running out to an 11-5 lead. But Sheldon methodically pegged back the lead to take the score to 18-15.

He finished off the game with a three-count on what proved to be the final end, taking him to his second national title. "That first title was very special as it was my first one, but this one means a lot, being singles, so achieving it on my own." he said.

The road to the final was not straight forward for Sheldon,

he had a one shot win in the semi-final over Peter Sain. "Definitely the toughest opponents were Shannon and Peter. I really had to dig deep to get past them."

Sheldon used his Dreamline XG<https://henselite.com/ product-category/lawn-bowls/dreamline-xg/>s to good effect in the changeable conditions throughout the event. "They were amazing in all the conditions, especially on the carpet when it go transferred to carpet due to the weather," he said. "Next for me is waiting to see if I have been selected to play in the multinational in March for New Zealand." Being on the edge of NZ selection for a number of years, Sheldon has certainly found a great way to make his case for national representation.

A FIFTH NZ NATIONAL TITLE AND A GOLD STAR FOR SELINA

In doing the Takapuna club and the North Harbour centre proud in the New Zealand's National Women's Singles Championship final, Team Henselite's Selina Goddard took a major step towards being acclaimed as one of New Zealand's greatest ever women's bowlers.

Selina beat her Black Jack team-mate, Tayla Bruce 21-20 under the roof at Orewa in a match of sublime quality. Previously Selina had won the singles in 2017, the fours in 2014 and in 2020 and the pairs in 2020.

There were several factors in the latest success which were testimony to not only her considerable skill but also to her temperament and composure under pressure. For one, she had to overcome a formidable opponent, the winner indeed of the World Champion of Champion Singles title late in 2022 and who in this final also played at her optimum best. She, too, who was defending the title she won last year. And there were many stages when it appeared that Selina was at her mercy and on the brink of defeat.

Bruce's ability at either converting ends in her favour or reducing counts either through aggression or her own accurate draws enabled her to take after 16 ends what seemed a decisive 18-13 lead. But Selina then showed her mettle by picking up seven shots over the next four ends to take a 20-18 lead, and to be then

holding the game on the 21st end, only for it to almost slip from her grasp.

Bruce sprung the jack towards two of her wing bowls and then came close to adding what would have been the winner with her last bowl. She then drew a toucher on the 22nd end to herself again hold the game. It was then with the last bowl of an epic game, one of the best ever women's national finals, Selina entered her name among the game's legends. Celebrated for her superb drawing, she unleashed on the back hand a perfect drive to remove Tayla's shot bowl and leave the jack undisturbed. This win takes Selina to the brink of greatness, earning her, while still in her 20s, her a coveted 'Gold Star' for winning five National titles. Selina will represent New Zealand at the World Champion of Champion Singles, scheduled for November this year.

John Westbury is a semi-retired senior journalist and has been in the media industry over 35 years. He started his career in news reading in Melbourne and Perth then returned to Melbourne where he entered into the PR and newspaper area, and is the recipient of various media awards. John and his wife Anne have been playing pennant lawn bowls for many years and are both umpires. They enjoy caravan travelling and playing bowls around Australia when the opportunity prevails.

BOWL WHILE YOU TRAVEL AUSTRALIA

For nearly 20-years I have been involved in the caravan industry area and I currently write for Whats Up Down Under E Magazine as well as looking after two caravan social media pages.

Just over two years ago I was at a meeting relating to the caravan industry when I was asked what the industry did in the way of assisting lawn bowlers travelling around Australia. The answer was simple; “nothing”. It was suggested I think about seeing what could be done. My wife Anne and I are both lawn bowlers, umpires and have travelled around Australia in our caravan where we have enjoyed many social games and made good friends at many clubs.

I called a good friend lawn bowler and caravanner, Nic Storer and his wife Pammi who we played a game with here in Victoria when they were travelling and discussed a couple of possibilities with them. Nic, apart from being a keen lawn bowler is also a retired green keeper. Following some discussion, I went into two caravan Facebook sites I administer and asked if there were any lawn bowlers out there. The replies came hot and fast.

With that in mind I set up on Facebook on February 2nd 202o our Facebook page, Caravan Lawn Bowlers Club Australia. Within the first week we had over 100 members and at the time of wring this we have just on 2000. Our presence has increased in that members asked if we could have a club shirt. Yes, we have thanks to Todd Simmons from Hooded Lyfe at Frankston – Melbourne who designed a fantastic shirt. Todd also supplies

shirts for many clubs Australia wide.

The idea of the club is simple and it is FREE (you pay for your shirt though)! As example we live in Melbourne and when away always enjoy social bowls at clubs where we have seen their advertisements. On the page we ask members and clubs to post their flyers for social bowls, barefoot bowls and competitions. When we visit a club we naturally pay a green fee, if they have a bar (most do) we pay for drinks and where some clubs have restaurants we make a point of eating there. So, all the clubs we visit make some money and we also get to meet great friendly lawn bowlers from all around Australia. It works in reverse and we have had visitors from interstate visit us while in Victoria. So, here is a greeting and background from Nic and Pammi8.

“We’re Pammi and Nic. We’ve been nomads nearly 10 years, and, we are from South Australia. I am a retired greenkeeper having maintained greens at clubs in the Adelaide metro area and then at Willunga in the McLaren Vale wine region. After the Willunga Bowling Club went synthetic in 2013 we became nomads and I had a spell doing some relief green keeping for Active Turfcare in NSW.

Pammi spent 20 years as a childcare worker and is a passionate bead worker and jewellery maker. She loves teaching her craft to others, especially to kids as we travel. We played “night owls” for a number of years and pennant bowls 2011 and 2012. We both achieved a pennant in the lower divisions. We played together in 2012 with the advent of open gender on Saturdays. We haven’t played much in the last few years, but hope to again one day. As an Admin with John, I enjoy meeting other travelling bowls players on the road and look forward to meeting more of you.”

STEAMERS CLINCH THIRD BPL TITLE

Home franchise the Moama Steamers have claimed a third Bowls Premier League (BPL) trophy at BPL17 and first in three years following a 5-2, 6-2 win over the Sydney Lions in a rematch of 2022’s BPL14 final. After concluding the preliminary rounds on top of the table, Aron Sherriff, Cassandra Millerick and Ryan Bester would wait until the third match of the night as they looked to book direct passage to the decider. The qualifying final saw them meet the Lions who accounted for them in two sets, forcing Moama to take on the Moreton Bay Pirates trio of Chris Rosanes, Jo Edwards and Alex Marshall.

The home side took the opening set before Sherriff and Marshall dazzled the capacity crowd to some of the most delightful shot making of the week.

Moreton Bay were in their third clash of the evening, having ended the reign of two-time defending champions in the Melbourne Pulse first up before accounting for the Tweed Heads Ospreys in the second match of the night.

They had a feel for things and would no go down without a fight, with the maroon donned trio taking a tight second set and forcing a tiebreak for a place against the Lions.

It came down to the last bowl where Marshall looked on track to seal victory before the jack rolled towards the Steamers bowls, handing them the victory.

The final was hotly contested from the outset, with Sherriff maintaining his scintillating form from the prelim as he duelled superbly with Lions’ skip Aaron Wilson.

Millerick led magnificently in the opening three ends against Karen Murphy, while Bester and Ben Twist battled hard for their skippers in the ensuing ends. However, it was Sherriff that would get the job done in the clinches, playing bowls that one could only dream of as he secured his record fifth BPL title and first since BPL07.

Bester himself was crowned champion for the third time, while Millerick hoisted her maiden trophy at the event with coach Kevin Anderson winning his first championship as coach.

THE GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI - BIRTHING SEASON

February 2024

WILDLIFE EXPLORER, TANZANIA

With a maximum group size of 12, in our own exclusive luxury camps in Tarangire National park and in the Serengeti – this is a very special safari. Sean Lues will be accompanying this trip, passionate and with over twenty years of experience as a safari guide, he will help make this trip a journey to remember forever.

We spend three days in the baobab-strewn Tarangire National Park – a haven for wildlife, plus the opportunity for a night drive and a walk in the bush.

We will spend a full day in the incredible Ngorongoro crater, visit a Maasai boma and pass through the Oldupai Gorge and its museum, showcasing the findings of early mankind.

We finish up on a massive high in the Serengeti to witness the incredible phenomenon of the Great Migration, when the million plus wildebeest and zebra pause for a while on the short grass plains for the birthing period. During this period hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves and zebra foals join the herds over a three to four week time span. Olerai, Arusha. Resting at the foot of Mount Meru, the sprawling city of Arusha is known as the safari capital of northern Tanzania and is where we spend our first night.

OSUNYAI WILDERNESS CAMP, TARANGIRE

Osunyai Wilderness Camp, our exclusive Camp set on the edge of the wilderness zone, is situated close to the Silale wetland – prime elephant & buffalo habitat and in the heart of big game country. The camp is set beneath mature acacia trees facing the rising sun.

The baobab-strewn Tarangire is a haven for wildlife and has an extremely rich game viewing potential: large herds of elephants can be seen, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. Osunyai and nearby Silale are fantastic habitats to view predators and prey in an unsurpassed setting. Close liaison with our driver-guide will ensure the choice of daily activities match our mood and pace. A wide range of wildlife and nature activities are offered : in addition to the traditional Game drives, there are Game walks accompanied by our own armed walking guide. A night game drive will be arranged, as well as a Masai cultural experience ( ‘Olpul’ and medicine walk).

PLANTATION LODGE, NGORONGORO

A morning game drive out of the park to Plantation Lodge – set in a working farm and on a high bluff, the lodge is very comfortable, elegant and personable – one of the best addresses in Northern Tanzania.

This will be our base for two nights as we make a very early start for our full day trip into the Ngorongoro Crater. Abounding with lion, buffalo and many other species, including rhino and elephant, this is a day not to be forgotten.

Standing at 2236m above sea level, Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and is surrounded by very steep walls rising 610m from the crater floor. Covering an area of 259 square kms, it is considered to be one of the Wonders of the Natural World and is a veritable haven for wildlife.

DULANA, SERENGETI

Depart for the Serengeti Plains – game drive and picnic lunch on the way. A stop at Olduvai can be arranged, one of the most important paleoanthropological localities in the world. Gaze over the stark Oldupai Gorge, from where Louis and Mary Leakey had their research centre and currently houses a fascinating museum. The days of heavy canvas hunting camps set for the likes of Roosevelt and Hemingway were almost over until photographic safaris gained popularity. The luxury mobile tented camps are tasteful, extremely comfortable, and above all mobile, allowing freedom to follow the movements of the great migratory herds. The tents, which have been custom designed, offer the very highest level of comfort and mobility.

Dulana sits on the edge of ‘Hidden Valley’ a little-known depression on the southern plains of the Serengeti, on the edge of the off-road driving area, allowing immediate access onto the short grass plains, where Cheetah are abundant and Lion prides establish territory close to camp and the surrounding woodland. The camp takes advantage of the uninterrupted views across the shallow valley, where different species of game can be spotted from the comfort of the accommodation tents.

OUR FINAL DAY TOGETHER

Spend two nights in Arusha prior to the safari and a night in Arusha on the way back. This allows time for some local exploration and shopping – anything from exquisite Tanzanite jewellery to local materials.

Africa is very much worth a longer stay! So why not extend your journey with an endless array of options to suit you. Off the coast of Tanzania are the Spice Islands of Zanzibar; gorillas and chimpanzees abound in neighbouring countries and relatively close by are must-see destinations like Victoria Falls & Cape Town. Contact us for the detailed itinerary and to book your spot on this very limited space safari!”

“We believe exclusivity is the last true luxury in travel and this is what we strive to give you.”

The importance of trust when considering your financial options in retirement

When it comes time to considering our financial options in retirement, particularly those decisions which may relate to the family home, senior homeowners value trust and reliability in the businesses they choose to engage with. This is particularly important for some older persons in our community who may be concerned about being exposed to financial scams or fraudulent schemes.

Seniors often have a significant amount of wealth tied up in their homes, therefore decisions about releasing the equity in their home or other financial solutions are particularly important and can be life changing. Unsurprisingly, older homeowners often look for brands that they can trust to provide them with sound solutions, and outcomes, that meet their needs.

When a brand is trusted, it can make a significant impact on the decision-making process. A trusted brand can help to alleviate concerns and fears around long-term financial decisions and provide a sense of security and confidence. This is particularly important

for some seniors who may be less experienced in financial matters or more susceptible to scams.

One equity release provider has been successfully building trust with its customers for many years –even to the extent that many happy homeowners and their advisors will refer friends to Homesafe for them to consider the debt free equity release solution for themselves. In fact, 1 in 5 homeowners who enquire with Homesafe Wealth Release® are referred by someone they know.

When a friend or family member recommends a brand or product, it can provide an additional layer of assurance and validation that the brand can be trusted. Moreover, as family members are strongly encouraged to participate in the decision-making process, many children of homeowners will start the ball rolling and make the first enquiry on behalf of the homeowner.

Homesafe Wealth Release has established a reputation for transparency and ethical business practices, which is crucial for building trust in the equity release market. Homesafe’s solution is designed to provide older homeowners with financial independence and peace of mind without the need to sell their home or take on debt or a reverse mortgage.

10 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

The Homesafe Wealth Release option is not a loan, and as you don’t borrow money, there is no capitalising interest charges over time. Repayments do not apply, and instead the share of the future sale proceeds of your home sold to Homesafe is capped so you can protect a portion of the equity in your home into the future – or for your beneficiaries. You can also sell your home at any time, or alternatively, Homesafe will receive its share of the sale proceeds after you have passed away.

John and Sandra Trust was an important focus for John and Sandra^ when they recently approached Homesafe. Their Solicitor had recommended they contact Homesafe to look into a way to pay off their reverse mortgage and to fund some minor renovations to their home. John also had some small debts which were outstanding when he closed his business during covid, and both were starting to feel the ‘pinch’ of rising living costs and interest rates.

Both John and Sandra wanted to take their time to consider the Homesafe option, and met with their Homesafe Mobile Specialist a number of times to ask as many questions as they needed. They especially appreciated that Homesafe does not have a ‘sales’ focus and the team members with whom they were engaged were not driven by financial incentives.

As their Solicitor was familiar with Homesafe and he was keen for John and Sandra to be comfortable Homesafe was right for them, they both felt re-assured that they were making the right decision. John even discovered that two friends at the local golf club, were already Homesafe customers!

Building trust in a brand takes time and effort, and it requires a commitment to transparency, ethical practices, and providing exceptional customer service. Homesafe Wealth Release has demonstrated its commitment to these values for over 17 years and has consistently focused on providing older homeowners a reliable and trustworthy retirement funding solution.

The team at Homesafe takes the time to understand each homeowner’s unique situation and provides a personalised service to meet their needs. For more information on how Homesafe has helped older homeowners to find peace of mind in retirement for over 17 years, contact Homesafe on 1300 307 059 or visit www.homesafe.com.au.

Jonathan’s family leaves a legacy

Three-year-old Jonathan had a rocky start to life, after being diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) within 24 hours of being born.

HLHS is a condition whereby the left side of Jonathan’s heart was born too small to function effectively and was unable to pump his blood around his tiny body. To alleviate his condition, Jonathan underwent two open heart surgeries – the first of which was performed when he was only seven days old.

“Before he was taken away, we held him for what could have been the last time. It was not the beginning to his life that we had imagined. His chest remained open for three days post-operation to allow his swelling to go down, and I will never forget that sight,” remembered Jonathan’s mum, Jess.

Jonathan has since undergone two further open-heart surgeries, and his treatment is ongoing. He will require cardio appointments every few months to monitor his progress and another surgery in a few years. His family cite the Foundation’s support as invaluable during one of the most difficult periods for the family.

We chose to leave a gift in our Will to the Children’s Hospital Foundation for many reasons. It is one small way to help one last time when we eventually (hopefully many years in the future) pass away. While most of our possessions will pass to our children, we know we will leave a legacy in providing help for sick kids.

Due to the support that Jonathan received during his hospital journey, his family have decided to leave a gift in their Will to the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Both Jonathan and his sister, Liesel, have spent time in hospital, so the family thought it was important to ensure that other families who find themselves in similar situations can be supported by the Foundation.

“As Jonathan will need at least one more open-heart surgery, we know that Children’s Hospital Foundation will be there to support us when his operation happens. The gift in our Will was easy to do when we wrote our Wills using Gathered Here, which took some of the stress out of creating this important document. It’s something we’ve encouraged our friends and family to do,” added Jess.

Gathered Here is a free and easy step-by-step online Will writing service which is supported by an in-house legal team.

MULTI-NATIONS SELECTIONS CONFIRMED

The sport’s national selection panel have edged a step closer to determining the Right at Home Australian Jackaroos and Para Jackaroos players to contest this year’s World Bowls Championships, with the naming of selections for next month’s Multi-Nations event.

The lead-in international competition, set to be staged on the Gold Coast from March 25-31, will feature seven nations in attendance, including New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Ireland, Hong Kong China and Norfolk Island, with Australia fielding two teams – Australian Jackaroos Green and Australian Jackaroos Yellow.

The Multi-Nations will be the last international event featuring a full team contingent on Australian soil a head of the sport’s marquee event, the World Bowls Championships is contested across five Gold Coast clubs from August 29-September 10, with selectors using the occasion to cast an eye over a field featuring four vision-impaired, four para men, four para women, 10 open men and 10 open women players. Australia’s most capped competitor, Kelsey Cottrell, returns to the fold after being unavailable for the Commonwealth Games campaign, slotting in the Green Team’s prime women’s singles position and will also skip the triples, while Dawn Hayman will take the reins of pairs and fours.

Professional earwax removal

At Earworx we work with Australian’s every day to relieve them of ear wax build up and the associated discomfort, hearing loss and pain this can cause. We take great pride in our exceptional service and our caring and compassionate approach to ear health.

Ear wax removal is a delicate process and special training is required to perform this procedure. Earworx is a service that proudly employs only registered nurses who are qualified in the process of Micro Suction and Aural Hygiene

Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life.

The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively. Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists.

Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction.

A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older member of your family are experiencing any of these symptoms, our

friendly and professional registered nurses can assist you. We are passionate about ear wax removal; it’s our core business and what we do best.

The hearing-impaired community in Australia deserve to be treated with respect, care and dignity. These Australians work hard, care for families, and as such it is important that they experience the best quality of life that is available to them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to Earworx services however we are now open with strict mitigation strategies in place to reduce the risk of transmission to both staff and clients. If you would like to know more about these please visit us at www. earworx.com.au.

Let us help Australians to be able to hear, communicate, and as such fully participate in our community activities – make a booking at Earworx today.

When life will never be the same

Duncan Schieb

It was a fairly ordinary New York day. I remember it being reasonably mild for February, but the kids were up at the crack, and I was preparing for what was to be a typical day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had declared the day before that COVID-19 was heading towards a pandemic status, but we were still somewhat oblivious to what that would eventually mean. I’d picked up the children from school and daycare and we went about our everyday routines of bath, dinner, reading and bed.

Lachlan had a bit of a runny nose and was a little sluggish with a slight temperature. But otherwise, he was his usual happy self; playing in the bath, eating his dinner without fuss and being the delicious little boy he was.

I rang the paediatrician, and they said to ensure he has some fluids and give him some kids' Nurofen to bring down the temperature. Duly his temp came down, and he and his twin brother went to sleep at their usual time.

It was around 2:30am when I heard one of the boys crying. I went into their room and Oscar had a soiled nappy so

I changed him and put him back down. I then looked into Lachlan's crib and touched him. He was lifeless. My blood ran cold. I grabbed him from his crib and took him into the lounge. I called 911 and performed CPR until the paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital. They worked on Lachlan for over an hour, but he died sometime during the night and there was nothing anyone could do.

Lachlan's death was sudden and devastating for our family. Days after his funeral, New York City was put into a shutdown. It was an extremely challenging time, dealing with your own grief as well as the grief of four young children.

Everything was turned upside down. At times like these you have to make decisions that are not just in your interests, but the interests of your children. I stopped drinking and ensured I was present for them every day as we battled with the grief of Lachlan's passing, a devastating lockdown, and children home schooled that saw everyone stuck at home for months.

Happy days spent in the pool with Charlie, Matilda, Molly, Lachlan and Oscar.

I made the decision to relocate back to Australia for us to commence a new life closer to family and, at that time, in a country with few COVID-19 infections and a more normal life in Sydney. We were desperate for a new normal and to regain some happiness in our lives.

I grappled with how to help my children manage their grief and set a path of healing for them. I’ve raised money for charities all over the world and always enjoy being able to make an impact on the lives of others. I talk about philanthropy a lot with my children and how they can make a difference in the lives of others.

Working in real estate sales, one of my value propositions for sellers is donating a portion of my commissions to charity. I call it impact sales — we all get to benefit from making the world a better place.

At Dubbo Base Hospital, we saw the crib we donated through the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. It was the most significant step forward in managing that grief. This is a process that will continue to evolve but always leave a lasting legacy in Lachlan's name.

Charlie, Matilda, Molly and Oscar were able to ask questions, learn how it worked and hear first-hand stories of how it's already helped save babies' lives. They were able to tell their stories about their baby brother to the nurses and medical professionals. It was amazing to sit, watch and listen to them. The children deeply understand how they can make a change and help others in Lachlan's name which helps them cope with their grief.

At the time of writing this, it's been 964 days since Lachlan's passing. The ripple effect has been significant. We have experienced the damage of addiction, family breakdown, and much more. You can never prepare for the loss of a child, and when you have four young children, you learn that the evolution and management of that grief is ongoing. It is an exhausting rollercoaster ride that seems to have no end.

As a father, I want to shape my children to be responsible, respectful and resilient as we navigate life. I love helping charities raise money and make a difference, but this was extra special as it meant helping my kids first. It was the best therapy for all of us. They are my world.

Whatever difference you can make in the lives of others, no matter how small, please do it.

Since Lachlan’s death I’ve chosen the Humpty Dumpty Foundation due to the huge impact of procuring lifesaving equipment for hospitals across Australia. If our family can play a small role in saving a life, then we have made a difference and a family doesn't have to experience the same grief of losing a child.

louder than words

A Time for Reflection

Ray Martin AM

Both my children were both born effortlessly at our fantastic local hospital, just one of the many privileges

Twiggy and Nicola Forrest gave twenty million dollars to the Randwick Children’s Hospital the other day. Twenty million. This will help build one of the world’s great research centres for kids’ cancer.

The mining magnet and his wonderful wife are, of course, amongst our richest families. But still, the Forrests’ don’t have to give away their tens of billions of dollars, as they have promised to do.

So, when one of the paediatricians at Royal North Shore asked if we could help raise some money - to paint the khaki-coloured walls in the Children’s Ward - it was impossible to say “No”.

From Broken Hill to Mareeba, from Tennant Creek to Taree, Paul and I have visited hospitals where we’ve met healthy babies who are only smiling today (almost as much as their relieved parents) because you cared enough.

And you do. One of the great mantras of my old friend and mentor, Professor Fred Hollows, the legendary eye doctor, was, “The single quality that separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, is that we have the capacity to care.”

The capacity to care!

We shake our heads when we hear doctors and nurses talk about now being able to save babies - without feeling one hand was tied behind their back, because they didn’t have the medical equipment. In some of Australia’s more remote towns, they honestly didn’t believe anybody was listening. Or could be bothered.

Paul Francis and his committee promptly organised what was called The Wimbledon Ball (remember Paul is heavily into tennis shorts) and I agreed to be the MC.

This latest act of public kindness by Twiggy and Nicola –and there have been many from this remarkable WA couple -set me thinking about Australians and philanthropy. And to be honest, we’re not very good at it, nothing like the Americans.

That’s over ninety million dollars ago, some years before the Humpty Dumpty Foundation was even born.

Rich folk in Australia tend to sit on their wallets, often pretending that they’re anonymously philanthropic. I hate to say it, but usually they’re not. Of course, there are fantastic exceptions to that general rule.

In fact, we’ve now reached over three decades of great food and fine wine events, asking Humpty’s family and friends to buy life-saving equipment that governments just can’t afford.

We’ve heard that story so many times. You know - on reflection – it is the unbridled generosity of Humpty’s supporters that resonates the loudest. Why you keep giving money to babies and children and families whom you’ll probably never meet – but who are emotionally forever in your debt – astounds me. If you sometimes wonder about the decency or charity of Australians, well just come to a Humpty lunch or dinner – or the Balmoral Burn. That’s worth reflecting on.

In another lifetime I was the Chairman of the Fred Hollows Foundation for its first decade. I was also hosting the Nine Network programme, A Current Affair. I walked in my front door one night after the show and my house phone rang. It was Dick Smith, who is an extraordinary Australian, and generous to a fault.

“G’day, Ray,” Dick said, “Are you still involved with Fred Hollows?” I said I was.

“Is it doing good work?” he asked.

That’s why it’s a time for reflection. Because generous people like you have bought the Humpty dream. And for some reason you keep doing it, again and again. What you do - when you pull out your credit card or write a cheque - makes an enormous difference. There’s no doubt, many babies are alive in hospitals and clinics right across Australia – now around 500 different places – because of the generosity of individuals and corporations, from all over Australia.

The Humpty Dumpty family, for example, is uncommonly generous. And our supporters don’t often move amongst the billionaire set.

Maybe it’s because Paul Francis and the Humpty team give people who are inclined to donate to charity a lot of good reasons to be generous. Maybe it’s because when it comes to babies and children we really are moved to do something. We want to make a difference.

Humpty is also slowly building ‘a family’ in Darwin, to help mostly Indigenous babies isolated right across the Territory. In five short years, the impact has been breathtaking.

Ray Martin has been a Patron of the Humpty Dumpty Foundation since 1990 to raise awareness of the Foundation and the work it provides for sick children in hospitals across Australia. Ray hosts many of Humpty’s events as well as being involved in trips across Australia to meet with medical professionals, young hospital patients and their families. Ray is also involved in The Good Egg Magazine, which celebrates the work of the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.

Martin was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2010 Australia Day Honours “for service to the community through voluntary roles with charitable, Indigenous, health and sporting organisations, and to the media as a television journalist.”

Martin was awarded the Centenary Medal on 1 January 2001.

I told him it was, it was doing exceptional work. (Still is.) What I didn’t tell him was that we were having desperate trouble raising funds. In fact, we were going broke and starting to wonder how we were going to survive. It’s not easy getting Australian charity money to fix the eyes of cataract blind people in the Third World, especially when the great man (or woman) on whom it all depends, suddenly dies of cancer, as sadly Fred Hollows did thirty years ago.

In 2018, Martin was honoured with a special collection of post stamps issued by Australia Post.

Since it’s release, Harry’s memoir “SPARE’’ has become the fastest selling non-fiction book in history. It seems the public has a ravenous appetite for Royal gossip, and the book does not disappoint with its explosive accusations and revelations regarding the Royal household.

Prince Harry, has indicated that he wants to share his story with the world, regarding the mistreatment of his wife Meghan, by the Royal Family and the British press. Unfortunately, Harry still believes the British press are responsible for his mother’s death. However, he is confident that the revelations will generate a greater understanding from the public for himself and his wife. However, according to recent polls, 41% of Britain’s population believe his antics are primarily money related and his ultimate goal is to damage the Royal institution and the British press. Publisher’s Penguin Random House has reported that a staggering 1.4 million copies were sold on the first day of sale in the US, Great Britain and Canada. It appears that the memoir seems to have lifted the lid on life as a royal, with the most damaging smear campaign of all time. Consequently, this tactic has had a huge impact on the public perception of the Monarchy, with many now referring to the Royal crisis as a (Kardashian style) Royal soap-opera which is being played out through the media.

Unfortunately the late Queen’s catch phrase of “NEVER COMPLAIN & NEVER EXPLAIN’’ has clearly been lost on Harry, who throughout the book has described the Royals as cold, manipulative and cowardly,

who hide behind media leaks and planted stories. The memoir also reveals that Harry is acutely aware of the family’s historical past. However, this fact appears to be of no consequent, as he continues his destructive assault on the Royal family throughout the book. He has also conducted numerous televised interviews to promote the book for both British and American audiences, and appeared on various Late night television programs.

The promotional campaign has resulted in an average of 5.3 million viewers watching the “tell-all’’ interviews, which have sent shockwaves across the globe.

In the memoir, Harry has accused the Queen Consort Camilla of conspiring with British journalists for years in an effort to “sacrifice him’’ for her own personal PR rehabilitation. However, he also divulges that he begged his father King Charles not to marry his second wife Camilla. This request ultimately fell on deaf ears, and the couple married in April, 2005.

Consequently, according to a Royal source, Camilla thinks Harry’s attack is hypocritical and he’s done The Monarchy a grave injustice by painting her in such a distasteful light.

However, Harry is not the first “Royal’’ to rebel and rock the Royal Institution to its core.

Over the years Britain’s Royal Family has endured numerous royal scandals that have caused irretrievable damage to the monarchy, through a series of bad judgments made by several members of the Royal Household.

The abdication in 1936 of King Edward VIII left the world shocked and conflicted, when it became clear that the King was choosing passion over protocol. According to Royal sources the abdication undermined the Royal Institution and caused an enormous rift between King

Edward VIII and his younger brother, who ultimately replaced Edward and became King George VI. The exiled couple, Edward and Wallis gave numerous interviews to various media outlets and released their own memoirs in 1951 and 1956 respectively. In his memoir the former King spoke about his early years, his military service during World War I and his life before he ascended the throne, on the death of his father King George V. He also documented his “lonely’’ life as King and his decision to marry Wallis Simpson against the gruelling juggernaut of the British establishment and the British Government.

Harry went on to reveal in his controversial memoir that his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, took a final swipe at her exiled uncle and his twice divorced American wife Wallis Simpson by burying them in a distant location in the Royal Burial ground away from everyone else, after they both passed away.

During the 1990’s “The War of the Wales’’ between Harry’s parents, the then Prince of Wales, Charles and the then Princess of Wales, Diana caused enormous damage to the Royal institution.

Charles subsequently released a book with the help of Royal reporter, Jonathan Dimbleby, where he brutally criticised his parents for being detached and distant. Diana then released her own book, written with the help of Andrew Morton. She later denied working with Andrew Morton on the book. However, after her death

Morton revealed how he sent her questions and she secretly recorded her answers, sending the cassette tapes back to him via a friend. Both Charles and Diana then gave televised interviews in the lead-up to their divorce. They both made damaging revelations about their private lives, with Diana highlighting Charles’s infidelity in her infamous and controversial 1995 Panorama interview, in which she admitted that “there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded.’’ The couple formally divorced in 1996.

Despite all the family drama, multiple reports have insisted that Prince Harry and Meghan want “a-sit-down’’ with senior members of the Royal Family, to try to implement a reconciliation. They are also demanding a formal apology for the “unconscious bias’’ they claim was inflicted on Meghan during her time as a senior member of the Royal Family.

However, the Royal family is allegedly “baffled’’ by the couple’s demands, and have remained silent. However, The British Sun newspaper allegers that King Charles does not want to get involved in a public showdown. Only time will tell if this latest drama can be resolved………….

NECK AND BACK PAIN

26 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Neck and back pain can range from mild, annoying aches to severe, disabling pain

While most spine pain occurs as a part of the normal degenerative ageing process-it can also be a warning sign of cancer, infection, autoimmune disease, or a structural problem causing pressure on the spinal cord/ nerves

WHY DOES THIS OCCUR?

Our spines are comprised of a number of joints around the spinal cord and nerves. As we age, changes occur as the joints wear out resulting in inflammatory processes such as osteoarthritis. The joints and tissues can also become overgrown and compress a neural structure, which is called spinal stenosis. Failure of the joints to hold the bones in position can result in slippage and deformity. These are common characteristics of conditions such as spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, or scoliosis.

WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN THESE DEGENERATIVE CHANGES CAUSE?

• Dull, burning, or sharp pain-which can be confined to a single spot or cover a large area.

• Arm/leg numbness or tingling

• Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and your arm.

• Sharp shooting pain that radiates from your lower back to your buttocks, and down your leg (sciatica)

• Stiffness in your neck or back

• Difficulties with walking and balance

• Difficulties with coordination

• Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are important symptoms that require immediate medical attention.

HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?

You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays.

27 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED?

If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are beneficial.

Low-impact exercise programs may improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and improve flexibility and mobility, increase endurance, and improve pain. Weight loss and improving one’s core strength are also useful.

WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP?

A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life.

Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain.

An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.

WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE?

Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord.

Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications.

These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse.

There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY

Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial.

You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility.

The goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life.

RAJ: Yes, my father is a GP in the Liverpool area so a career in medicine became an appealing choice for me. However, I think my parents were disappointed that I became a neurosurgeon! They wanted me to be a physician, since the life of a surgeon can be demanding.

B&L: What led you to follow the brain and spine path?

RAJ: The brain defines us, and I find operating on the brain technically and intellectually challenging. Challenges motivate me, and bring out the best of my abilities.

B&L: What was your second option if you were not successful in this field?

RAJ: I am good with my hands, so I could have become a chef, mechanic or a carpenter.

B&L: How does your family feel about your success as a surgeon and the dedication to your work?

RAJ: Being a surgeon is challenging, there is no room for complacency and mistakes. My parents and my partner are very proud of the work I do for the community.

B&L: Any plans for marriage and children?

RAJ: The short answer is yes. Unfortunately our plans have been temporarily put on hold due to COVID.

B&L: What motivates you to continue doing what you are doing?

RAJ: I want to make use of my skills and do as much good for the community as I can.

B&L: Can you tell me about your association with the other doctors in BrainSpine and how that came about?

RAJ: I am an only child; I’ve always seen the bond and strength siblings have. Hence, developing a group of doctors with a similar mindset has many positives. We brainstorm difficult cases, and manage each other’s patients when one of us is away.

B&L: What is the most common ailment you observe in your patients?

RAJ: I work in both the public and private sectors; therefore, I deal with everything that occurs in the public sector, mainly trauma and cancer, and mainly degeneration issues in the private sector.

B&L: Who do you admire in the medical field and why? Did you have a mentor?

RAJ: Yes, Doctor James Drake from Toronto because he is neurosurgical royalty, vastly skilled, and experienced – yet is grounded and acknowledges his limitations.

B&L: What is your advice for a healthy mind and body?

RAJ: Balance, moderation, and remaining active.

B&L: What are your thoughts on the COVID crisis and how should we be dealing with it?

RAJ: Unfortunately, the situation is very difficult for the public to understand, because of the changing data. The data does not change because it's wrong, it changes because we are continuously learning more about this disease. Also, the authorities' messaging is not as clear and straightforward as it could be.

B&L: People seem hesitant about receiving the jab because of side effects (blood clotting) from AstraZeneca.

RAJ: All vaccines can have side effects; however, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the rare risk of side effects. It's better than getting COVID.

OUR GOAL IS TO HELP YOU AVOID OR DELAY SURGERY.

Our Mission

At Surecell, we focus on the regenerative powers in our bodies

We use the power of platelets to encourage the body s natural healing process without resorting to medication or intrusive operating procedures

We adopt a holistic approach and seek to understand the way our body repairs itself and how we can best assist in this process

Leaders in Regenerative Medicine Surecell specialises in the clinical application of autologous PRP and cell therapies

The Surecell group treats up to 1,000 patients per month, trains medical professionals from across the globe and creates educational material accessible to both patients and health workers

PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)

What is PRP?

Our blood is made up of 93% red blood cells 6% white blood cells 1% platelets and plasma Platelets are best known for their function of blood-clotting to stop bleeding Platelets, however, are much more significant than this, as human platelets are also a critical component in injury healing

How does PRP work?

The growth factors and platelets in the plasma promote cells to multiply and form new tissue accelerating and enhancing the healing process

PRP contains a much higher concentration of platelets than normal blood This means that higher concentrations of growth factors are being released into the injured area

When compared to cortisone injections PRP injections hold better results and last much longer While the effects of cortisone are rapid, they are often followed by a decline in condition PRP shows slower but greater long-term improvement and less injury recurrence

What does the process involve?

After assessing you a nurse will take your blood (like a standard blood test) which will be spun in a centrifuge to isolate the plasma component

PRP is activated under a light Then, the PRP is injected directly into the site of injury The process will take around 45 minutes to an hour

Construction is well underway on exciting new upgrades to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge’s community facilities on the back of a record surge in enquiry from over-50s looking for the security and support that lifestyle resorts like this one offers.

Among the resort upgrades currently under construction are improvements to the community hall which will see the installation of a plush 60-seat movie cinema, an exclusive Milon gymnasium system, a heated indoor swimming pool, spa and other new activity rooms. Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott said, when complete, the value of the improvements would be in the vicinity of $5-6 million.

“With 44 years of history in developing and operating over-50s communities, it’s important to our family company to continue to spend money on updating our resorts’ community facilities,” Mr Elliott explained.

“In a nutshell, these upgrades reflect directly on re-sale prices for our homeowners. Our residents also take great pride in their communities and we want to encourage that and make them feel proud to host their visiting friends and family members in their respective resort grounds.”

Mr Elliott said Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge was his family’s first foray into over-50s community lifestyle resorts, purchased back in 1977. Since that time, Palm Lake Group now offers 28 locations across three states of Australia, including three greenfield sites that are currently in various stages of development approval. There are also six aged caring communities in the company portfolio.

“Community facilities have always been key to Palm Lake Resort’s market offering,” Mr Elliott said.

“We are definitely in the business of building impressive homes for modern over-50s but, more so, we are in the business of building great communities. A big part of this comes with providing on-site social and sporting facilities that allow our homeowners to come together and enjoy each other’s company.

“That might mean a meal with neighbours in one of our clubhouses, or a game of lawn bowls, or some mini golf with visiting family, or even an art class or music practise session in one of our specialist hobby rooms with likeminded neighbours.

“It’s important to note that we are always striving to improve and be better, to keep ourselves ahead of our competitors, but our main focus is on constantly completing facility upgrades and improvement projects to keep our property values and investment potential up,” he said.

My name is Mala. I am writing to you from Tanna Island in Vanuatu where I live and work for CARE.

I am privileged to be a part of the incredible change CARE’s projects are having here.

We have helped women start businesses, become leaders, and share their knowledge and skills.

Women are working together now to address challenges and build a better future for themselves and their families.

I’ve witnessed so much positive change in the lives of women here in Vanuatu, and I am grateful to all the donors who have made this work possible

I encourage you to join us in supporting women and defeating poverty.

Kind regards,

Dear readers, Mala

Roslyn saves her community from disaster

“If this house was to fall down,” Roslyn says, “Everyone would be dead inside.”

It was April 2020 and Cyclone Harold was wreaking havoc through the Pacific Islands. In Vanuatu, it destroyed around 17,000 homes and tragically killed dozens of people. But on a small island called Pentecost, a woman named Roslyn managed to save the lives of her neighbours and friends.

The reason? Roslyn was ready. Luckily for her neighbours, Roslyn had become a member of CARE’s Community Disaster and Climate Change Committee, so she knew exactly what to do to save lives in a disaster.

“I told everyone, ‘Now we must get ready! Put the rocks on top of the houses! Get your torches ready! Check around your house to see what trees are close to the house and cut them down!’” says Roslyn.

In the morning, she immediately began assessing the needs of her community and started repairing the damage.

She organised deliveries of food and equipment to be transported from the mainland and managed the response until our emergency response team arrived.

“We counted on Roslyn to direct the distribution of the items to those who needed them most because she knows the community,” says Jessinta Natu, Shelter Assistance Officer for CARE in Vanuatu. “She knows the households, and who needs what.”

This is why CARE partners with local leaders like Roslyn — because no one knows a community like they do!

Empowering women through financial literacy and small businesses

A mother of two from Tanna Island in Vanuatu, Jacklyne always thought of herself as a full-time housewife. She knew how to sew but never thought it was a skill that could bring in money for her family. Despite the family’s spending habits meaning they often struggled to pay for their children’s school fees and other household items, the idea of Jacklyne getting a job or starting a business just didn’t seem possible to her.  Nor did her husband think she had the right to contribute or comment about his financial management — it simply wasn’t how things were done in their community.

But when CARE visited her village and held a Family Financial Management workshop, things started to change. Men and women learned how sharing financial decision-making and supporting women to pursue paid work benefits everyone and can even be a way out of poverty.

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs)

In 1991, CARE launched a program in Niger that would change the world – at least parts of it. It harnessed the ancient practice of group savings in a concept called Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA). The premise is simple: VSLA members (mostly women) make a small deposit into the lockbox every week. Three senior members of the group are given keys and the box can only be opened when all three are present.

Members can then request small loans and then pay them back over time with interest (usually about 10 per cent). The interest comes back to the group as profit, which they can then invest into their families, their communities, and their businesses. It’s an incredibly sustainable, locally-led solution that empowers women who have previously been prevented from playing an active role in leading their families out of poverty.

And the best part is, it really works! Across the 200,000+ VSLA groups that CARE has supported around the world, these simple lockboxes enable an estimated 30 million transactions a month – or $350 million per year.

A member of the first-ever VSLA established in Niger in 1991, Fatchima has witnessed the powerful impact the program has had on her family and community. Over the past 30 years, Fatchima has found financial freedom in the peanut oil and home remedy businesses she runs, having started and expanded them with loans from her VSLA group — which she is still a member of today!

As a child bride who was forced to drop out of school at a young age, Fatchima didn’t think it was possible for girls to have dreams. But because of her involvement in the VSLA, Fatchima’s granddaughter Nana now dreams of becoming a teacher.

“The workshop made us realise our mistakes and our money misuse in our home,” Jacklyne says. “We never knew how to negotiate, and now my husband and I sit down together and have discussions before we do anything.”

After the workshop, CARE workers spoke to Jacklyne and other women in her community about starting a Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), so they could bring in their own money as well. When she mentioned her skills in sewing, Jacklyne was encouraged to start her own small business.

“This has greatly helped and benefited my small family and me,” Jacklyne says. “Money that I borrow from the VSLA I use to purchase material for my sewing business. I sew island dresses and shirts, modern dresses and many other products.”

THE KNCC IS CELEBRATING IT’S 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR.

British born Lawn Bowls global sensation and creator of the KNCC, Andrew Newell plans to mark the anniversary with a revolutionary fun day of bowls with a twist. However, staunch bowling enthusiasts need not worry, Andrew assures patrons that the event will still feature the usual KNCC agenda with favourites such as Music, Caribbean food and activities for all to enjoy.

Andrew Newell is credited with creating the KNCC (Kermit Newell Challenge Cup) in 2013. This event saw Jamaica represented for the first time in lawn bowls against other countries. Originally the KNCC event was held as a family fun day,

and to raise the profile of lawn bowls and create interest in the sport within the Caribbean community. However, the alternative reason for Andrew’s determination to include Jamaica, was to encourage Jamaica to play officially with the possibility of competing in the Commonwealth Games. Since the conception of The KNCC in 2013, Andrew, has held events in Glasgow during The Commonwealth Games month 2014, Northampton and all over London………..

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Andrew Newell is a Lawn Bowls superstar, who has singlehandedly revolutionised the sport, which has now globally captivated today’s youth.

The creation of the KNCC has attracted a huge global following, countries such as Sweden, Marcau, Belgium. UAE and Holland have all participated.

As a youngster, Andrew Newell’s unrelenting ambition was to become a Lawn Bowls champion and ultimately introduce Jamaicans to his beloved sport. Andrew recalls memories of watching English bowlers such as David Bryant on TV as early as 1980. These early memories have had an everlasting impact on Andrew and spurred an overwhelming interest in the sport. Andrew’s determination and entrepreneurial skills resulted in the opening of the first bowls green in the Caribbean in 2015. He is also the founding member of Jamaican Lawn Bowls team the Reggae Rollers, who are now enjoying celebrity status. Andrew’s talent has inspired a huge following and global recognition. He is a living legend and an amazing role model for young bowlers from all walks of life, who dream of following in his very successful footsteps.

JACK ATTACK PROGRAM RECOGNISED WITH COUNCIL AWARD

A regional Victorian club’s Jack Attack program’s outstanding success has been recognised with a recent honour by its local council.

Violet Town Bowls Club – about half an hour from Shepparton in Victoria’s north east – took out Strathbogie Shire’s Event of the Year for their successful Jack Attack programs in 2022.

The club was one of four nominees in the category presented as part of the Shire’s Australia Day Awards.

The club first got involved in Jack Attack in late 2021, and plans to commence their fourth program this month.

Violet Town secretary and Jack Attack coordinator Margaret Crawford said the award win came as a “huge surprise”.

“We didn’t know anything about it until a few people around town said to come to the Australia Day breakfast,” she said. “I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face, I was so excited.” As reflected by the award win, Jack Attack has proved a big success for Violet Town.

From community groups to businesses to families, Crawford said the program has welcomed new people to club that may not have been involved with bowls previously.

“We first got involved when John Emerson, who was our Regional Bowls Manager at the time, came for a visit and told

us about Jack Attack,” she said.

“From there we looked at it, talked to a few people around town about interest levels and nearly straight away we had 12 teams.

“Our youngest player was seven years old, and our oldest was 90. They played against each other one night which was just fabulous to watch.”

The one-green club is now at a capacity 14 teams, running two four our five week programs a year (February and November).

Crawford said Jack Attack has been well received by participants, and has also helped rejuvenate the club itself.

“So many people from the community just love the atmosphere of it. There’s lots of laughter and music and everybody getting together, they just love it,” she said.

“More community groups are wanting to hold gatherings here and have started noticing the bowls club more. The club’s profile has grown in the community.

“We have also attracted more social members, and hopefully more pennant players in the future.”

Crawford said investing time into Jack Attack has proved worthwhile, as well as support provided from Bowls Australia.

“It is hard work getting everything organised but once the first night is up and going, things start to fall into place,” she said.

“We do appreciate John Emerson’s (RBM) help at the beginning.”

Q & A WITH MARK HUGHES

B&L : Congratulations Mark on the outstanding success of The Mark Hughes Foundation. What inspired you to start the Foundation?

MARK : I was diagnosed with high grade brain cancer in 2013. With a wife and 3 small children my life flashed before my eyes and at that moment Kirralee and I decided we couldn’t sit back and had to make a difference. MHF was launched in March 2014 while I was going through chemotherapy and it astonishes me how far we have come in that time.

B&L : Can you tell us when the idea was actually conceived?

MARK : Kirralee and I actually started discussing setting up a foundation whilst I was still in the hospital after surgery. After googling the statistics on brain cancer we knew this was a journey we had to take.

B&L : Your foundation has helped many brain cancer patients. How does that make you feel?

MARK : The greatest thing we can do is to give patients hope. We have invested millions into research and funded brain cancer care nurses in the Hunter Regional and rural NSW. The care nurses are absolute angels to patients and their families going through what would be the toughest times of their lives. It costs a lot of money to fund these nurses but they are worth every cent.

B&L : Your wife Kirralee is a big part of the foundation. How does she feel about the work and results the foundation has achieved?

MARK : Kirralee and I have always made a great team and we were always in this together. We are both so proud of what we have achieved together and so grateful for the support, however we also know that so much more is needed and we won’t rest until we find better treatments for those diagnosed with brain cancer.

B&L : You were only 36 when you were diagnosed with brain Cancer and your children were very young. How did you explain the situation to your children and how did they react?

MARK : Our 3 children were all under 10 when I was first diagnosed and we did and still do to this day focus on what

we are doing to make a difference. They know that I get scans every 4 months to check that I am still healthy and that the foundation plays a big role in giving us hope for the future.

B&L : Your wife family and friends have given you enormous support over the years, and you are regarded as a hero and survivor by Aussies throughout Australia. How does it feel knowing that your foundation is contributing to find a cure for brain cancer?

MARK : To know that we have supporters right across Australia who believe in us and are committed to helping us raise funds for brain cancer is truly humbling. Our little idea that I came up with during treatment to wear a beanie on my head has now helped us raise close to $30 million.

Our annual Beanie for Brain Cancer Campaign and the NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Round are our biggest fundraisers to date and the support is overwhelming at times. It keeps us motivated and energised to keep pushing hard for a cure.

B&L : What is next on the agenda for you and the foundation?

MARK : Our first MHF ladies trek kicks off in April 2023 and we are looking for sponsors and donations to help the crew of 20 raise as much funds as we can.

B&L : What is the ultimate goal that you would like to achieve through your foundation, and what is your aspiration for yourself in the future?

MARK : We are as committed as ever to searching for a cure for brain cancer. The statistics are that brain cancer is the biggest killer of children and those under 40 years. This year a new $25 million Centre for Brain Cancer Research was announced which builds on the existing partnership between MHF and the University of Newcastle with MHF having now committed $15 million over five years to establish a dedicated research team and centre. This is a game changing step for brain cancer research in Australia and something we have been working towards since 2014.

B&L : I believe that you have met some amazing people during this journey. What would you like to say to them, to help them remain positive?

MARK : Thank you for being so brave and putting yourself out there to support MHF. We are devastated when we hear of someone losing their battle to brain cancer however it just makes us more committed than ever to honour those who have passed and find better treatments. It is our mission to put a stop to this disease so that no more families are torn apart from this hideous cancer.

B&L : Can you tell us about your association with Paul Harrigan, and the role he plays in the foundation?

MARK : Where do I start! Chief was my captain as a 20 year old when I first started playing rugby league with the NRL Newcastle Knights and we won a premiership together in 1997. Thirty years later he is still one of my closest mates and we are still doing amazing things together. He is my mate, my mentor, an ambassador for MHF and just one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I’m just so thankful I have him by my side during this journey.

Lisa Marie Presley 1968 – 2023

Lisa Marie Presley, only child of the late “King of Rock’’ Elvis Presley and his then wife Pricilla has passed away. She was 54 years old. Her mother Priscilla confirmed the devasting news in a statement released to the press. “Lisa Marie went into cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas California and sadly later died in hospital.’’

Despite her famous surname, Lisa Marie kept a relatively low profile. However, in 1980 after both her grandparents died, she became the sole surviving heir of her late father’s $100 million estate, which included his Mega residence “Graceland’’ in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 1997 Lisa Marie celebrated the 20th anniversary of her father’s death by releasing a song recorded by Elvis in 1969 called “Don’t Cry Daddy.’’ The song was released as a duet with her father’s vocals and presented on August 16, 1997 at the tribute concert that marked the 20th anniversary of Elvis’s death.

Lisa Marie was 9 years old when her father Elvis Presley died. Despite trying to maintain a low profile, her tumultuous personal life, which included 4 marriages and 4 divorces made headlines for all the wrong reasons. She led a troubled life which ultimately contributed to her tragic death.

Lisa Marie’s first marriage was to Chicago-born musician DANNY KEOGH. (1988-1994)

The marriage produced 2 children Riley Keogh an

actress and Benjamin Keough a musician. Unfortunately, Benjamin committed suicide in July 2022. He was 27.

In 1994 Lisa Marie married Super Star MICHAEL JACKSON, the marriage lasted 2 years and they divorced in 1996. However, according to multiple sources Lisa Marie, was a devoted fan of Michael Jackson and actually met Jackson at one of his shows in Las Vegas, when she was 17. The couple divorced in 1996, citing “irreconcilable differences.’’ Lisa Marie later admitted that “they were actually still together on and off for four years.

Lisa Marie then married multi-award winning actor NICOLAS CAGE in Hawaii on the 25th anniversary of Elvis’ death in 2002. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last and they divorced in 2004. After her death, Cage announced in an emotional tribute that Lisa Marie “lit up every room, and I am heartbroken.’’ Lisa Marie’s longest marriage was with musician MICHAEL LOCKWOOD (2006 – 2021) which lasted for over a decade. The marriage produced twin daughters Harper and Finley, now 14. However, their drawn-out divorce was brutal, with court proceedings exposing Lisa Marie’s battle with addiction to painkillers and opioids.

Following her sudden death Lisa Marie was laid to rest on the 22nd of January, 2023 alongside her father Elvis and son Benjamin in the Meditation Garden at her childhood home “Graceland’’ in Tennessee.

Elvis Presley

1935 - 1977

The King of rock ‘n’ Elvis Presley passed away in 1977. He was 42 years old.

However, despite Presley’s untimely death, his legacy lives on. Elvis is credited with helping to develop rock ‘n’ roll from rockabilly in the United States, while embracing elements of soul, blues, and country. He is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century.

Elvis Presley’s music career began in 1954, when he made a recording at Sun Records with record producer Sam Phillips. At the time, Phillips was determined to bring the sound of African/ American music to a wider audience, and knew he could achieve this through Presley.

However, Presley under the guidance of his manager Colonel Tom Parker, released his first single “Heartbreak Hotel’’ with recording juggernaut RCA in 1956. The single became a number-one hit in the United States. Within a year, RCA would sell over ten million Presley singles worldwide. This strategy was followed with numerous television appearances and several more chart-topping records. That same year Elvis, following the advice of his manager Colonel Tom Parker made his film debut in “Love Me Tender.’’

He subsequently achieved enormous success as an actor and recording artist and became the most commercially successful and influential artist in music history. He remains the best-selling solo music artist of all time with over 500 million record sales.

In 2018, President Donald Trump awarded Presley the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.

THE “CURSE’’ OF THE ELVIS PRESLEY DYNASTY...

The recent death of Elvis Presley’s only child Lisa-Marie has prompted many fans to speculate that the Presley family is cursed with bad luck. Fans are now allegedly comparing the Presley’s to the tragic political Kennedy dynasty.

Consequently, Lisa-Marie’s premature passing has continued to add fuel to this theory. Fans have always speculated that the curse initially started with the tragic death at birth of Elvis’s identical twin brother Jesse in 1935.

23 years later, Elvis Presley’s mother Gladys unexpectedly passed away in 1958 of a suspected cardiac arrest. However, fans believe she drank herself to an early grave. She was 46 years old.

In 1977 fans around the globe were left in total disbelief when it was announced that the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley had died of a suspected cardiac arrest. He was 42 years old. However, subsequent autopsy findings indicated that the cause of death was “cardiac arrhythmia.’’

The King’s death resulted in an outpouring of emotion from heartbroken fans around the globe and left an unrepairable void in the music industry.

In 1979, just 2 years after the death of Elvis, Vernon Presley, father of Elvis also died of cardiac arrest. He was 63 years old.

Unfortunately the alleged curse delivered another blow to the family when Benjamin Keough, son of Lisa-Marie and grandson of Elvis, tragically ended his life by suicide in 2020. He was 27 years old. The tragedy devastated the family and completely destroyed his griefstricken mother Lisa-Marie.

After Benjamin’s death, Lisa-Marie spoke publicly about her grief resulting from Benjamin’s death.

Recollections IN PICTURES

THE EARLY YEARS...

Over the years I have had the enormous privilege of working with amazing people on extraordinary projects in television, theatre and movies.

My first film role as an actor was in the 1966 movie “They’re a Weird Mob.’’ I played a lifesaver. Fortunately, my performance inspired the producers, who then cast me in their next project, as helicopter pilot Jerry King in the very successful television series “Skippy.’’ The series became one of the biggest international success stories in Australian TV history, and dubbed into 25 languages. Subsequently, the series became so famous and popular, it was televised well into the 1980’s and featured in over one hundred countries. It is still currently being televised on repeat after all these years.

THE PERSUADERS

I made a guest appearance on the very popular actioncomedy “THE PERSUADERS’’ in 1971.

I starred alongside Hollywood Heavyweights Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. The series was filmed in the famous Pinewood Studios in London, and it explored the world of Lord Brett Sinclair, a British aristocrat played by Roger Moore and Danny Wilde, a self-made millionaire played by Tony Curtis.

The twosome join forces to investigate crimes that the police were unable to solve. I remember walking onto the set and Roger Moore was there.

This good looking actor with a wonderful smile and vibrant eyes.

From the moment Roger and I shook hands over 40 years ago, we connected. From that handshake, we instantly became good mates. I was taken by his outgoing attitude , his openness and his generosity of spirit and he kind of saw something interesting in me as an actor also.

He was an extraordinary human, who did so much to help others, especially underprivileged children through his work with charities such as UNICEF. Roger was one of the reasons I joined the Variety Club in London with Susan George………..

RECOLLECTIONS OF FILMING THE ANZACS WITH PAUL HOGAN

times, not to just laugh out loud, he was a bloody beauty.

Paul Hogan and I have remained good mates, we are around the same age. I remember when he started with Mike Willisee, then the cigarette adds. When Paul lived on Mullholand Drive in LA, I would visit him when I was there filming MURDER

I accepted this production to play Lieutenant Armstrong, which later became Captain Armstrong because of my interest in WW1, and my interest in the role. If there is no scripted background to a character, then it is up to the actor, with the director’s knowledge to construct this. I created Armstrong, who was to be a leader in this production with a gentle background, possibly still living with his parents, a school teacher perhaps. Having read the script, a 10 hour mini-series, I established the moments when he would be under the most stress, the moments that he needed to be a leader, so I played him with fears he hid from all others. Not so much fears for himself, but for the young men he would need to order into battle, their fears. His orders would lead to the death of his men, young men unprepared for the horrors of trench warfare. To Armstrong it was not just the death and brutality of war. It was the parents and wives of his men that would be felt back home. This internalised fear I played in Armstrong’s leadership was to finally be what destroys him as a leader, until his health, both physical and mental was not something he could control, so he was sent home as the story came to its conclusion……. Ending with the first Anzac Day Memorial back in Australia, a very emotional moment for all the actors. One of the cast members was my old pal Paul Hogan. Paul was by no means new to being in front of a camera, but that was the comic genius. Paul, who made us all laugh at his gags and comic storytelling, creating characters of identifiable connection to us all. But here he was to play a character with an ensemble of actors, all working in harmony, telling each character’s story, so for Paul this was new in a sense. Paul created his character who was a gambler, a wheeler dealer with little respect for authority, especially the British officers, these moments were a joy for us all to watch, and difficult at

SHE WROTE or THE LAST FRONTIER, I spoke with him just recently, I hope we get to work together again.

I loved everything about THE ANZACS, the sets, costumes, makeup, the directors were all sensational and an extremely talented cast of actors.

QUIGLEY DOWNUNDER

Quigley was a wonderful shoot. It was a script that I had heard of many times in the past years. It had bounced around Hollywood decades ago, with the possibility of big named actors attached to it, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and several other actors. Then Tom Selleck, put his name onto the project, and finally it was up and running. I was asked to play Dobkin, the foreman to the brilliant actor Alan Rickman.

57 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

I had many scenes and opportunities to work with this actor, whose loss to the film world not long after this film was released, was a sadness to all who knew him. The love interest was to be played by the sensational Laura San Giacomo. With the main location being Alice Springs, which I have always loved, and at the time not embroiled in the tragedy that is currently inflicted on this beautiful town, the Alice will survive this and move forward. My fellow Aussies in this Australian Western were all actors of interest Ben Mendelson, Jerome Ehlers, Ron Haddrick, Chris Haywood, Steve Dodd and my good self. I can recall being asked to officially open a sensational bar/restaurant there, “Bojangles’’ many a great night was had there. My hope was that Quigley would start other western based stories to film here of this genre. I have been fortunate to have done several with this Australian western feel, The Man from Snowy River, Inn of the Dammed, and The Lighthorsemen. Films with horses, fabulous locations, great scripts and passionate actors will do me

The upcoming young actor to play my son and the lead was Ryan Kwanten with his love interest being a very interesting actress from New Zealand Simone Kessell. The story revolved around international Surfing competitions, their girls, drugs and prison. Ryan’s character had a dream of facing and resolving his fears, his father (me) had fears for his son being able to do this, so family conflict was also an important aspect of this story. This conflict infected his friends as well as the family, a perfect time for bad people to take advantage of my son’s confusion for their own agenda. My character was a paraplegic, having broken his back surfing waves, which my son now wanted to ride, to prove himself……. I am always drawn to roles, characters that are flawed, or need to prove something to themselves or others, so this role was another character of interest for me. The prison sequences within this film are indeed interesting….. this is a fine film for the budget they had to work with. I applaud the director Phil Avalon, to put on screen what he has for this budget was sensational. His love and understanding of surfing underpinned his ability to do this.

Film making is a tough business. You need passion.

REFLECTIONS & RECOLLECTIONS COURTESY OF TONY BONNER AM

REFLECTIONS OF FILMING LIQUID BRIDGE

Right from the get go, I found script/story and characters interesting. The writer, Pim Hendricks had attached several interesting story lines, interwoven with the major aspect of this film. So when the producer/director and old friend Phil Avalon asked me about playing Bob McCallum, the leading character’s father I was in. There were several other salient reasons for my quick acceptance, script was fine, the production was going to be excellent, but what was a winner for me was the strong and committed cast. The sadly departed super actress, Carmen Duncan was to play my wife.

TONY BONNER AM has appeared in an eclectic mix of critically acclaimed films, television shows and live theatre during his phenomenal career. He was nominated for “The Best Actor in a supporting role’’ by The Australian Film Institute in 2003 for the film “LIQUID BRIDGE’’ and received a “Lifetime Achievement Award’’ from The Australian Screen Industry Network Awards’’ in 2011.

Bonner was appointed a “MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA’’ (AM) in 2017 for his services to the performing arts as an actor, surf lifesaving and to the community through charitable organisations.

According to Chelsea, the idea of “BELLA’’ was conceived after she experienced her own journey as a plus-sized model in New York, where she soon identified the lack of diversity in the industry. Subsequently, her vision to redefine popular convention, garnered a cultural change in the fashion industry. This monumental change, coupled with her courage to convince the nation’s biggest retailers to consider plus size models proved to be a winning formular. Therefore, impressionable “would-be’’ models who were potentially subjected to negative discrimination regarding their dress size, skin colour, disability or age could now relate to more realistic looking models, on the pages of popular magazines and on the catwalk.

Chelsea’s motivation and commitment to changing the perception of health vs size and redefining beauty, has resulted in enormous personal success as a mentor, business woman, entrepreneur, actor and public speaker, who is on a staggering mission to change the face of fashion…………

Since it’s conception in 2002 ‘ BELLA’ has successfully introduced plus size models and inclusivity into the modelling industry. Q&A with Chelsea Bonner

B&L: Congratulations on your amazing achievements regarding your agency “BELLA Management’’ and your inspiring book “BODY IMAGE WARRIOR.’’

When was the idea of creating a model agency specializing in diversity and plus size models first conceived?

CHELSEA: The thought of creating my own model agency was conceived in 2001, when I was working in New York as a plus size model. I recognised the obvious void in the industry for diversity and plus size models (who are actually regular sized people) I came back to Australia determined to rectify the situation and started my agency in 2002.

B&L: Bella Management has achieved enormous success over the years. How did success make you feel and has your success made a difference to your life?

CHELSEA: I am still the same person, and have not changed since my agency became successful. I do not care about becoming successful personally, my main objective is the welfare of the people that “BELLA’’ represents and making a lasting impact regarding the introduction of diversity into the modelling world.

The funds that have been generated through “BELLA’’ always go back into the business to improve, safeguard and create a lasting legacy.

B&L: What was it like growing up in the spotlight as the daughter of Tony Bonner and Nola Clarke? Did this cause a problem when you were at school?

CHELSEA: Unfortunately, it was a very confusing time for me, because I experienced a lot of judgement from other pupils and was teased mercilessly because of who my parents were.

Dad was a huge star at the time because he was starring in the TV series Skyways, unfortunately he would create a frenzy every time he came to the school. At the time the media referred to my parents as the ultimate golden Australian couple.

B&L: We believe, you are also a public speaker. What do you talk about during these sessions and how does the audience react? What is the feedback when you speak about your crusade to bring diversity to the fashion industry?

CHELSEA: The feedback is always positive, when we discuss diversity in the fashion industry. I always try to eliminate any negative thoughts my audience may have concerning their bodies, and I look forward to hearing stories from the audience. Some stories are funny and some are sad. However, women love to share experiences with each other. It’s something they do to lift each other up and be each other’s champions. Therefore, we discuss body image and positive thinking. I try to promote strength and confidence. I am extremely passionate about raising awareness of positive Body image and dismantling the negative images and advertising messaging we read and see every day.

B&L: What is next on the agenda for Chelsea Bonner, any plans to retire?

CHELSEA: There are no plans to retire any time soon, however when the time is right to step away from the business, my hope is that the person that takes over the business has the same passion and beliefs as me……………….

LAWN BOWLS IS FOR ALL AGES

When visiting some bowls clubs it is great to see some very young kids playing bowls, but, not very many. I have been asked by friends several times why the younger set seem to be not interested, and, in my opinion there are a few reasons.

62 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Firstly, I hav e to point out it is not the fault of our lawn bowls organisation who make every effort possible to attract younger players. I have been present when school groups visit clubs, and, while the kids are always respectful to older folk present, many of them look on it as escape time away from the classroom. There are other sports clubs which attract quite a lot of young kids, such as soccer, cricket, basketball and football, and nearly all these are full to capacity with players. Many young kids have dreams of becoming a sports star, and when they see how some of their sports idols started, you can’t blame them. You only have to look where some, such as Ash Barty started and you can understand their dream of “one day I will be a champion”.

So, let us look at a couple of age differences, and firstly I introduce young Maverick Katz and his Dad Tim who I met up with both recently while playing a pennant match at Kooweerup south east of Melbourne. Maverick is about to turn eight and this is his first season and he has played 90-percent of matches as a lead. I played against him as lead in our team from Yamala Park and his dad was skip, and I have to admit that there were times he was on the jack whereas I simply wasn’t. That did not worry me as I was pleased to see a young and upcoming lawn bowler doing so well. Tim says Maverick enjoys his bowls and looks forward to each game he plays. Other members of the club give him a lot of encouragement and are always helpful. “He started playing bowls this year as I would often head down for a practice or barefoot bowls and he is quite sporty and outdoorsy so said he may like to play. I encouraged him a bit to have a go as he would just sit at trainings getting bored so just got him up and gave him a go. He just enjoys being active. I think with a younger crop of players coming through he will be even more comfortable. We may have another young bloke about 6-7 who has turned up recently whom sounds keen to play as likes to be involved in sport, but is scared of contact so he really enjoyed bowls . Hopefully another junior chap in the making”, Tim told me.

Tim has been a member of Kooweerup for 3 years and is currently Vice President and has played a total of about five years. He was two years at South Oakleigh bowls club then left the game and went back to baseball for around 10-years, but due to injury and not being able to run came back to lawn bowls three years ago.

From eight to over eighty, meet John Legg from Yamala Park Bowls Club at Frankston South in Melbourne, a friendly club in similar size to Kooweerup where he has been playing pennant and social lawn bowls for 15-years.

John, who turns 84 this year has been playing lawn bowls for 25- years, and started after his retirement in 1998 at Broken Hill Associated Smelters Bowling Club, known as BHAS in Port Pirie South Australia where he was also President. Since joining Yamala Park Bowls Club John has achieved various awards including Yamala Park Midweek PDLA Division 3 Pennant Premiers

2010/11,Yamala Park Saturday Pennant Premiers

Division 4 2012/13 and Mixed Pairs Champions Yamala Park 2016/17.

He served a year as club President and loves playing lawn bowls as it keeps him active and involved in a competitive sport. He thoroughly enjoys barefoot bowls evenings where he gets to meet people of all ages and enjoys teaching them all he has learned about the sport over the years.

Like me John is hopeful that more young ones such as Maverick will come into the game and one day we all might see them as champions on the green.

“People can have lots of enjoyment being involved with others playing bowls. I enjoy helping barefoot bowlers new to the sport, and encouraging them to hopefully participate in the game one day”, he said.
