Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.

Excel/UltraMax is a 36 stitch 10mm pile height synthetic surface, widely used throughout Australia by KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass in the construction of bowling greens. Manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, the Excel/ UltraMax is exclusive to Green Planet Grass and KCL Sports in Australia.

Jon Hastings from KCL Sports pioneered the use of polyethylene springlock yarns for the DryMax Pro synthetic bowling surface. Between them, KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have installed nearly 300 synthetic bowling greens. The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed

for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The Excel/UltraMax has been used in retirement and lifestyle villages for half size greens and in full size installations for bowling Clubs. As well as the Excel/UltraMax, KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass also offer a range of 12mm surfaces.

Both Green Planet Grass in Western Australia and KCL Sports on the east coast, offer a full maintenance programme to keep your synthetic grass bowling greens in peak condition for optimal performance and to extend the life of the green. This can include thatching to lift the pile, algae treatment, sand level adjustment and re-rolling of the surface.

Where there’s a Will…. What are the many benefits of having a Will? Having a Will allows you to express your wishes and take care of your loved ones, by making sure your hard-earned money and assets are going to the people or charities of your choosing.

IT ALSO MAKES IT MUCH EASIER FOR YOUR SURVIVING SPOUSE, PARTNER OR EXECUTOR TO ADMINISTER YOUR ESTATE AND REDUCES THE RISK OF LITIGATION ON YOUR ESTATE FOLLOWING YOUR DEATH. What happens if you don’t have a Will? If you die without leaving a valid Will, you are said to have died ‘intestate’. Without a Will, your Estate passes in accordance with the laws of intestacy, which vary from state to state and depend on which family members survive you. Normally, your Estate will pass to your surviving spouse and children, but what if this isn’t how you want your Estate to be left? What if you have separated from your spouse or don’t wish to provide for certain adult children? In extreme cases, if you pass away intestate and don’t have surviving family members, your entire Estate can go to the government! When should you write or update your Will? You should make a Will as soon as you can since you never know when life can be taken away from you. We also recommend reviewing your Will every three to five years to ensure it stays up to date. How should you prepare before meeting with lawyers about your Will? Gather the details of your Estate assets, liabilities, bank accounts, life insurance, Superannuation, business entities and assets, trust deeds and so on and think about where you would like your Estate to go when you die. Most lawyers will provide you with a form to help with this and it is usually a simple exercise.

What are some common misconceptions people have about Wills? People often say they ‘have nothing’ so there is no point in spending money to have a Will done properly. What happens then is that they either go and get a pack from the Post Office, get a free will from the Public Trustee or just don’t do one at all! What many people don’t realise, is that they have death cover in their Superannuation and their Super contributions can add up to a considerable amount – it’s important to protect those assets by getting a properly drafted Will. If you are contemplating having a Will drafted, it is important to see

a lawyer who specialises in Estate Planning, as it is an extremely complex area of law. We advise you to see a professional as soon as possible and don’t put it off !

MARK CASEY REFLECTS ON CONTRASTING COMMONWEALTH GAMES EXPERIENCES BY DOMENIC FAVATA

From the triumph of a gold medal in a debut Commonwealth Games in front of a raucous home crowd in Melbourne, to four years later in Delhi, and a weight of expectation but faced with the most foreign conditions imaginable to an Australian bowler. To come away from two Commonwealth Games, in 2006 and 2010, with a gold and silver medal respectively, is no underperformance by any means.

Although, when Mark Casey OAM speaks to his contrasting Games experiences, there is some hint of what could have been, particularly when it came to capitalising on the freight train of momentum that was Melbourne in 2006.

“The whole thing about Melbourne was just incredible,” Casey said. “The village, the players, we could go out… We were lucky enough to have the triples in the first four days, so we had the next two weeks to embrace the whole city.

“It was just an incredible feeling; I had my family and friends there, being a Melbourne boy.

12

“THAT FINAL AGAINST IRELAND… JEREMY HENRY, OUR GREAT MATE, WAS INVOLVED IN THAT. IT WAS JUST A BRILLIANT GAME. BILLY (CORNEHLS) AND WAYNE (TURLEY) REALLY TURNED IT ON; I REALLY DIDN’T HAVE TO DO TOO MUCH, TO BE HONEST.

On the back of what was (at the time) the nation’s most successful Games in Melbourne, the team suddenly had to navigate the challenges of India with a new sense of expectation.

“You could call it the perfect game; all three of us did our jobs.”

“We were on an 11 second, dodgy carpet green. We had probably 10 supporters in the crowd… It was just a different atmosphere,” Casey said.

Watch Mark Casey’s full interview below, as part of our ‘Legends Under Lights’ series, proudly presented by Legacy Sport Lighting.

Fast-forward to Delhi in 2010, a Games dogged by construction delays and concerns over health and safety, the experience was entirely different for Casey and the Australian team.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

The Australians certainly didn’t disgrace themselves in Delhi but came away from the Games without a gold medal, but rather three silver and a bronze.

Casey, with Brett Wilkie and Wayne Turley, secured one of those silver medals and as he reflects on that “different” Games experience, pointed to motivation as a factor in the team’s performance.

“I think back to that time between the semifinal and final; if we had our time again, we definitely would have tried to pump ourselves up to go to that next step. “I guess we were just thrilled to get into the final and yeah, we probably didn’t play at our best and South Africa were outstanding.”

ROLL BACK THE CLOCK BRINGS NEW BOWLERS TO SOUTH TOWNSVILLE For positive opportunities the Roll Back The Clock program can create, you need look no further than South Townsville Bowls Club. South Townsville has been a regular in hosting Roll Back The Clock sessions since the program’s launch, enjoying great success in doing so. “It (South Townsville) was one of the pilot programs when things got started,” trainer Wendy Collins said.

“I think a sign of its success has been participants who complete a program and come back to do it again. We have even had two ladies go from start to finish four times.” Roll Back The Clock is a Bowls Australia program that aims to boost physical activity rates among Australians aged 65 and over through bowls, light exercise and education.

Programs were paused across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but plans are in place for many clubs to begin sessions again from mid-to-late-August.

Wendy, who runs a personal training business and is also a primary school teacher, said there are a vast range of benefits she has witnessed first-hand with Roll Back The Clock. “I think the social aspect is the part that’s wining hands down,” she said. “It’s also not just the physical, but the mental side of it fitness too. There are

discussion points on a weekly basis held in a fairly informal manner which really drives conversation. “The things we discuss are things most people already know, but it brings it to the forefront as something they should know is really important.”

Wendy said most participants at South Townsville were non-bowlers, with the club playing a key role in being welcoming. “Generally, people are there for about two-and-a-half hours even though the sessions are only one hour long. They thoroughly enjoy it,” she said.

“We only had one person who had played

bowls before, so when it came to getting out on the green to play, the members helped them out and made sure no one felt silly.” Wendy said because of the club’s warmth to the Roll Back The Clock participants, they had some come back to play bowls.

“There are now a few who are social bowlers. Roll Back The Clock gave them the confidence to do that,” she said. “Some of them even got together to create a Jack Attack team.” Barry Lehmann helped organise the Roll Back The Clock programs at South Townsville. He said it has been “fantastic” for his club.

“There is now a core group of people who come back regularly who never would have played before,” he said.

“They seem to love it, and it’s great for us to have some new people around the club. “Unfortunately, we had to postpone our Jack Attack competition because of the pandemic, but it shows how each program could integrate to the other.

“Wendy has been a great trainer, and the program has become part of another social network which is important for people. We are definitely keen to get involved again.” To learn more about Roll Back The Clock, visit bowls.com.au/get-involved/ rollbacktheclock or email rollbacktheclock@ bowls.com.au. Upcoming program locations are listed on the website. 14

Bowls Australia

ALL NATIONAL EVENTS POSTPONED UNTIL 2021 All remaining national bowls events scheduled to occur before the end of the year have been postponed, Bowls Australia (BA) has confirmed.

The decision, resulting from COVID-19’s impacted travel restrictions and quarantining measures, will delay the stagings of the upcoming Bowls Premier League (BPL), BPL Cup, Australian Championships, Australian Champion of Champions and Australian Multi-Disability Championships events. The next scheduled event on the calendar, November’s BPL12 at Club Pine Rivers, will instead be played from April 20-23, 2021, and will become the 13th instalment of the BPL competition, with February’s event at Moama unaffected.

The BPL Cup National Finals will shift from the Club Pine River event to the earlier Moama event, with the 16 national finalists from this year now earning expense-paid trips to compete in the BPL Cup National Finals during BPL12 at Moama from February 23-26, 2021. Rounding out this year’s deferments, the Australian Championships and Australian Champion of Champions events will move from

WORLD BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS DEFERRED TO SEPTEMBER 2021 The staging of the sport’s pinnacle event, the World Bowls Championships, has been delayed a further 105 days, controlling body World Bowls (WB) and host national authority Bowls Australia (BA) have announced today.

The quadrennial event will now be staged from September 7 to 19, 2021 in Gold Coast, Queensland, as a result of the current global COVID-19 climate and uncertainty around international travel restrictions which could impact the expected 36-attending nations.

Originally scheduled to occur from May 26 to June 7 this year, the event had already been postponed 12 months, to May 25 to June 6, 2021. BA Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple said the decision to delay the staging of the event is necessary to ensure all qualifying nations are afforded the best opportunity to attend.

“Due to the current climate around the world, we believe that rescheduling the World Bowls Championships to September 2021 will ensure the best chance for competing countries to attend the event and therefore the best chance for the event to proceed,” Dalrymple said.

“Collectively, we’re very appreciative of the support afforded from the event’s key stakeholders, including Tourism and Events Queensland and City of Gold Coast, and host clubs Club Helensvale, Broadbeach and Musgrave Hills Bowls Clubs, to ensure the

their December dates but will remain at Dandenong Club in 2021. The Australian Champion of Champions will instead be held on March 24 and 25, 2021, while the Australian Championships will move to May 24-28, 2021.

Both will be contested again in October 2021 at the inaugural staging of the Nationals at Broadbeach, which amalgamates the Australian Champion of Champions, Australian Under-18 Championships, Australian Sides Championships, Australian Senior-Sides Championships and Australian Championships events. Next year’s Australian Multi-Disability Championships, which will be managed by BA for the first time, has been delayed from September 2021 until December 6-11, 2021, with the host venue still to be determined.

BA’s 2021 event calendar has been updated to reflect these changes and can be viewed atg bowls.com.au. New dates for postponed events: • Bowls Premier League

• BPL12 – Moama, NSW: February 23-26, 2021

• BPL13 – Club Pine Rivers, QLD: April 20-23, 2021

• BPL Cup National Finals (to be played at BPL12 in Moama, NSW): February 23-26, 2021 • Australian Champion of Champions: March 24-25, 2021 • Australian Championships: May 24-28, 2021

• Australian Multi-Disability Championships: December 6-11, 2021

successful delivery of this coveted championship.”

WB Chief Executive Officer Gary Smith said he was appreciative of all stakeholders’ efforts in determining suitable competition dates. “On behalf of World Bowls and the Member Nations, I’d like to convey my appreciation to all stakeholders involved in determining the best course forward for this highly anticipated event, and of course, to all players, officials, staff and spectators who will support the staging of this event in September 2021.” Tourism Minister Kate Jones said events like the World Bowls Championships will play an important role in the state’s economic recovery. “Major events like this pump thousands of dollars back into local businesses, support local jobs and help to rebuild our economy,” Minister Jones said.

“This event will deliver a great boost for local businesses at a time when everyone is doing it tough.

“The Gold Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit and the Championships will give visitors another reason to book a trip.” City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said given the global uncertainty due to the pandemic, the postponement was the best outcome for everyone involved.

“We look forward to welcoming the world’s best bowlers back to our beautiful city in the spring of 2021,” Mayor Tate said. BA acknowledges the invaluable support from the World Bowls Championships’ principal partners, Tourism and Events Queensland and City of Gold Coast in the preparation and delivery of the event. Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life. The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively.

Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists. Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction. A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older 16

NECK AND BACK PAIN 18

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Neck and back pain can range from mild, annoying aches to severe, disabling pain While most spine pain occurs as a part of the normal degenerative ageing process-it can

also be a warning sign of cancer, infection,

autoimmune disease, or a structural problem

• Arm/leg numbness or tingling

• Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and your arm.

WHY DOES THIS OCCUR?

• Sharp shooting pain that radiates from your lower back to your buttocks, and down your leg (sciatica)

around the spinal cord and nerves. As we age,

• Difficulties with walking and balance

causing pressure on the spinal cord/ nerves

Our spines are comprised of a number of joints

• Stiffness in your neck or back

changes occur as the joints wear out resulting in

• Difficulties with coordination

inflammatory processes such as osteoarthritis. The joints and tissues can also become

overgrown and compress a neural structure, which is called spinal stenosis.

Failure of the joints to hold the bones in

position can result in slippage and deformity.

These are common characteristics of conditions such as spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, or scoliosis. WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN THESE

DEGENERATIVE CHANGES CAUSE?

• Dull, burning, or sharp pain-which can be confined to a single spot or cover a large area.

• Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are important symptoms that require immediate medical attention. HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?

You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays. HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED? If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse. There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.

WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP? A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life. Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain. An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial. You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility. The goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life. Courtesy Dr Raj Reddy, MBBS, MS, FRACS

WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE? Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord. Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

EXCLUSIVE STORY WRITTEN FOR BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE BY NORMIE ROWE AM By the time Australia resurrects itself from the disruption in the life we used to call normal, there will be more than 24 million stories to be told. Each story unique to the teller, and none more important than that being told by the individual. I think that if there is a theme that could be associated with each person, it could be Frank Sinatra’s, “I Did It My Way”. I’ve been very lucky even knowing that my entire working year has been erased. I look at the dreadful destruction of health, lives even, of others, and have to think that I am blessed.

In November 2018, I was bitten by a Whitetailed spider. The result was months of agony and a forced sedentary life. This in turn led to a compressed sciatic nerve caused slipped disc remedied in November 2019 by some spine surgery. So, for the most of 2020, I’ve been convalescing, doing my physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and getting back on my feet. So, much of my time has been spent in observation of how other Australians, and indeed, how people from the entire world have been coping with Covid-19.

I have to say that from the outset, the ability of many of our public figures to converse without clichés has me constantly amused. If I never again hear the words or phrases such as “unprecedented”, “We’re all in this together” (when clearly, we’re not all in this together) it will be too soon. If we feel that Covid-19 hasn’t brought out the hypocrisy in many of our leaders, we haven’t been listening. When sports teams are more important than people having to forgo the last few days of their loved ones’ lives and when the wealthy seem to be able to come and go as they please, then clearly, we are not all in this together.

When State boundaries are arbitrarily closed to suit political purposes despite most rural areas having been Covid free almost all of 2020, we’re certainly not all in this together, and when political leaders refuse to take responsibility for shoddy decision making, but instead blame “the people”, we

most definitely are not all in this together.

For me, because I like to balance my day, the shining lights have been parents (mostly Mums) who have tried to occupy their children 24 hours a day.

My experience is with my grandchildren, each of whom once again will have their own Covid 19 stories to tell throughout their lives. My 4-year-old granddaughter has attended her Kindergarten for the almost all of the pandemic period, so she has suffered few if any negative effects. My 19-year-old fully qualified, hair-dresser granddaughter has continued to work and has had the daily social connection that her chosen career affords her. The grandkids I have watched suffer most of all have been my 10-year-old granddaughter and 5-year-old grandson who live with their mother and father in Melbourne. They have been isolated from their school mates for most of this year; they’ve been home-schooled as best a non-trained parent (Mum) can manage, while Dad drives buses late at night mostly catering for the transport need of essential workers in Melbourne.

It seems to me that whilst Year 12 students have been massively affected by the events of 2020, little thought has been given to the needs of kids from the first year of school to Year 11. All kids need reading, writing, and arithmetic, but the young people in our society need play, and each other to play with, to find their way in the complex society in which we live. I have a friend who last year bought himself a rural home in an area not affected in any way by Covid-19 he has been in Victorian lockdown for over 150 days and is feeling the mental health effects of his solitary confinement. Bad enough, but spare a thought for those single parents trying to keep a roof over their family’s heads, home

school their children, and stop themselves from going stir crazy.

My daughter phoned me crying a couple of weeks ago, I thought, “this whole thing is really taking its toll.” Then she informed me, the Victorian government finally announced that the kids were going back to school and her relief was palpable. So, God knows what relief might’ve been felt by those doing 2020 even tougher than that. I’m constantly at a loss to find any humanity in those who say that Covid-19 only affects the elderly. The elderly are people’s parents and grandparents; surely, they have the right to live out their final years as comfortably as possible? I’m devastated to have proven to me just how ageist Australian society has become. If I was able to have even 20 more years with my father and mother, I would have given the world.

I truly believe that a better world is waiting on the other side of this whole disastrous event. I really need to hang onto that thought and be open to the exciting possibilities. Covid-19 has given us a chance to breathe, to look at the course we’ve been hurtling down, and to understand that humanity requires mutual respect, love and caring. Many years ago our daily TV watching came to an end with a short program called “Epilogue” with it’s thought for the day, that’s been replaced with the financial news of the day, much of television watching has become lewd, disrespectful and totally lacking in taste and talent. How did we allow this to happen – and exactly what were we thinking? Norman J Rowe, AM

The legacy of a caring life Following a career fulfilling a lifelong passion and love for former paediatrics, Dr John Macdessi’s decision to leave a gift in his Will extends his legacy to future generations.

patient he treated in the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Camperdown in 1972 left an indelible mark.

After graduating from the University of New South Wales in 1970 and completing his training at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Dr John Macdessi was appointed as General Paediatrician covering three district hospitals: Bankstown, Auburn and Canterbury.

To John, this “bright little boy, who had a loving family and always left you with a smile, reinforced the sanctity and beauty of life. He was loved by all the nurses and would greet every one of them by their first name and a comment on their perfume.”

Over two generations he’s witnessed “drastic changes in the survival rates of children suffering through epidemics like ‘summer gastroenteritis’ – a totally preventable bacterial infection – and the devastation of pre-immunisation problems such as whooping cough”.

John’s admiration and support for the work of his fellow paediatricians at both children’s hospitals in Sydney remains steadfast. He applauds the care they provide and says “the standard delivered in our hospitals is held in

One thing John explains has remained constant, and is as critical today as it was 50 years ago, is the need for support of colleagues working with children.

So began a 40-year-long career focused on improving children’s health and ensuring that all his patients received the very best care and treatment.

For John, who had always regarded medicine, along with clergy, as a caring profession, working with kids was never “just a job”. He loved paediatrics and loved working as paediatrician. “When you love what you do, it isn’t work”. Every patient touches the heart of the paediatricians and during John’s career a 24

This seven-year-old boy, born before the benefits of folate supplements were known and severely affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus, weighed just 7kg and was paralysed from the waist down.

John cared for many children while working across three district hospitals and always maintained a close connection with colleagues at the Prince of Wales – which would later morph into the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. During that time he was “probably their major source of paediatric referrals”.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

very high regard, everywhere around the world.” Although the practice of paediatrics and the complexity of conditions have changed enormously, John is grateful for the enormous changes and improvement in health conditions experienced during his 40-year-career.

He’s thankful that today “wards in our children’s hospitals are not full of infectious diseases such as diphtheria and measles” but acknowledges that “rates of winter bronchiolitis are still significantly high”. He’s hopeful that the COVID-19 “behavioural changes and a commitment to safe-distancing and self isolation might see a reduction in rates of bronchiolitis this winter”.

“LIFE AS A PAEDIATRICIAN IS HIGHLY CHARGED EMOTIONALLY AND IS OFTEN LIVED ON THE EDGE. PAEDIATRICS IS AN INTENSE AREA OF MEDICINE; THE CONSEQUENCES AND IMPLICATIONS OF EVERY DECISION WEIGH HEAVILY.”

Inspired by the children he has cared for, and aware of the many more that will need help in the future, John has decided to leave a gift in his Will to the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.

In addition to having access to a supportive network, a distraction that offers ‘down time’ is highly beneficial.

Not wanting any publicity or acknowledgement John is happy to share his story if it helps the Foundation. “If making a decision today can help enhance or improve the quality of care provided to sick children in the future, I’m happy for my intentions to be known. If that can in some way inspire others to do the same, I’m only too happy to help.”

For John, who jokes that olive oil runs in his veins, a natural escape, secured 20 years ago, was to an olive grove in Mudgee. Affectionately known as ‘the olive doctor’ by his newly adopted community, he has enjoyed an escape that fuelled a different kind of passion. That deliberate and planned initiative would eventually see retirement plans come to fruition. Retired now for the past six years, his lapsed registration with the medical board was recently reinstated – just in case they need him during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spirituality and compassion underpin his choice to leave a Bequest however, he acknowledges that a decision, shared 20 years ago by one of his mentors did make an impression. Although quietly inspired by Professor Leslie Stevens, Paediatrician and Neonatologist, who gifted a substantial sum to the Prince of Wales Hospital, John’s decision to leave a bequest is a deliberate choice to make a difference in the lives of others.

Today, John and his wife Laudie are devoting full time care to nurturing olives and perfecting the widely accepted health elixir of the future, amazing olive oil.

Life is good.

John’s decision to leave a gift in his Will reinforces a strong and heartfelt commitment to add value to the work of paediatrics and to improve the lives of sick and injured children. It’s a personal decision that will create a lasting legacy. If you’d like more information or a confidential discussion, please contact Emma our Bequest Coordinator on 1800 770 122 or email bequests@schf.org.au. Thank you.

TODD McKENNEY’S NEW PROJECT “INDUSTRY MASK MARKETPLACE’’ IS ASSISTING THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY DURING THE CURRENT NATIONAL HEALTH CRISIS

Australian entertainer Todd McKenney, who is best known for portraying Peter Allan in the musical “THE BOY FROM OZ’’ and as the controversial judge on “DANCING WITH THE STARS’’ has launched his latest project. He has created an online marketplace for Australia’s Costume Designers to make and sell masks on line. According to Todd, the project was launched after he witnessed first- hand the catastrophic impact on income and economic prospects relating to the stage and screen industry. The project has been a roaring success, and has subsequently helped support the entertainment industry through these unprecedented times. The masks are made to the current Australian health standards and can be purchased on line from TODDMASKS.COM

Todd is a passionate and long term member of the stage and screen industry and an advocate for Public Health. He is also a supporter of The Grace Centre at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead. McKenney has been performing on stage since 1983 in productions including “PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT’’ the musical and “THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE.’’ In 1992 he played the role of ballroom dancer Nathan Starkey in Baz Luhrmann’s film “STRICTLY BALLROOM’’ alongside PAUL MERCURIO and SONIA KRUGER.’’

Todd’s other notable achievements include his commitment as THE OFFICIAL AMBASSADOR for the “NATIONAL GREYHOUND ADOPTION DAY’’ programme which promotes the suitability of rescued greyhounds as pets nationally.

McKenney was awarded the distinguished “HELPMANN AWARD’’ in 2015. The Helpmann Awards were established in 2001, by The Australian Entertainment Industry Association and are awarded to the “Live Performance Sector for Artistic Achievements and Excellence.’’ AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Australia's leading provider of PRP and Stem Cell therapy

Healing | Muscles - Injuries - Joints

Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. As a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

JUNE DALLY-WATKINS 1927-2020

Australia’s deportment Queen June Dally-Watkins has passed away peacefully at the age of 92. She is survived by her 4 children and 7 grandchildren. DALLYWATKINS will be fondly remembered by family, friends and colleagues as ‘’a class act’’ and trailblazer who used her entrepreneurial skills to launch her career as a successful model and department queen. Miss Dally, as she was affectionately known, taught social skills and etiquette to some of Australia’s most successful women, and helped launch the careers of household names such as Miranda Kerr and Samantha Harris. She was also instrumental in helping launch the careers of 18 pageant queens including Miss NSW, Miss World and Miss Universe. Fellow model and personal friend Maggie Tabberer said Miss Dally-Watkins will be remembered as an ‘’Australian

Icon, who taught many young girls how to walk and talk, and be the best version of themselves.’’ Ms Tabberer also added ‘’I loved her and admired her enormously.’’ Television presenter (The Project) and former Cleo and Dolly editor, Lisa Wilkinson said. ‘’Generations of Australian models have Miss Dally to thank for the path she forged and the careers they’ve enjoyed.’’

mother Caroline encouraged June to pursue the more lucrative option of opening her own modelling and deportment school, resulting in unimaginable success and global recognition.

June Skewes ( June Dally-Watkins) was born in Watsons Creek, Tamworth in 1927. She was the illegitimate child of Caroline May Skewes. She later adopted her step father’s surname and subsequently transformed herself into June Dally-Watkins. June’s extraordinary beauty secured her first assignment, modelling hats in FARMERS DEPARTMENT STORE. However, June’s

June was awarded the medal of ‘’THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA’’ in 1993 for services to business, and was named as one of the 100 Australian Legends and a National Treasure.

June Dally-Watkins was Australia’s first supper model at 22, and later became ‘’model of the year’’ in 1949. However, she was never content to be ‘’just a pretty face.’’ In 1951, she subsequently used her fame to start a business empire, based on her belief that young people needed to present themselves in the best way possible, which resulted in Dally-Watkins opening the first modelling agency in the Southern Hemisphere.

In 1952, while on holiday in Italy, June met and had a brief relationship with Hollywood actor Gregory Peck, who was in Italy filming ‘’Roman Holiday.’’ June has since described the whirlwind liaison as ‘’the happiest time of her life.’’ The following year (1953) June met and married naval officer John Clifford, unfortunately the marriage was not to last, they consequently divorced in 1968.

Celebrating the power

AND DETERMINATION OF WOMEN IN THEIR GOLDEN YEARS We are no longer living in an era of older invisible women. However, not so long ago, a woman in her fifties was regarded as over the hill and irrelevant. Today it is a different story. Women of all ages are proving that age is no longer a barrier, when it comes to creating significant changer’s in today’s modern society. In the following article I will pay tribute to 7 trail blazers who are still active in their chosen field, and highlight their outstanding achievements.

Sophia Loren Age 86

Italian actress Sophia Loren is regarded as

‘’Hollywood Royalty’’ for her contribution and services to the performing arts as an actor. She has starred in over fifty films and remains a woman of uncompromising beauty and elegance, securing her status as a living legend around the globe. Sophia recently starred in a rose-inspired perfume campaign for fashion heavy weights Dolce & Gabbana at the age of 81, proving that age has no boundaries in today’s fashion forward society. Sophia recently claimed that the key to beauty and happiness is serenity.

Nancy Pelosi Age 80

Nancy is an American politician who has served as speaker of The United States House of Representatives since 2019. She is the highest-ranking woman elected official in United States History. Pelosi made history in 2007 when she was elected ‘’The First Woman’’ to serve as speaker of the house. As speaker, Pelosi is relentlessly fighting for the people and working to lower health care costs and increase worker’s pay through strong economic growth.

Quentin Bryce Age 78

Quentin Bryce is an Australian academic who served as the 25th Governor General of Australia from 2008 to 2014. She is still very active in her plight to support many charities that are close to her heart, and presides over various boards and charities as either ‘’Patron’’ or ‘’Ambassador’’ for organisations that promote the interest of women. Among them are The National Foundation for Australian Women and The Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Ita Buttrose Age 78

Over the years, trail blazer Ita Buttrose has been the subject of many sensational articles praising her credentials as a media power house. However, it was her appointment as ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) chair at the age of seventy seven that caused many sceptics to finally acknowledge her tremendous talent and ability in both journalism and television. Ita will be steering the ship at the ABC for the next five years, with over 5,000 employees on board. Ita is also an active member of many charities that relate to women’s issues.

Jacki Weaver Carla Age 73 Zampatti Australian sweetheart Jacki Age 78 Weaver made her film debut in the 1971 film ‘’Stork’’ for which she was rewarded with her first ‘’Australian Film Institute Award.’’ She then went on to enjoy a mediocre career in film and television, and devoted much of her time to the Australian stage. However, it was not till 2010, that Weaver became the ‘’toast of Hollywood’’ at the age of 63, when she starred in the crime thriller ‘’Animal Kingdom.’’ Her stunning performance earned her an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Colonel Graham Fleeton, aided by his experienced Military Historians invites you to join him on his Battlefield History Tours, to those Battlefields where Australians had fought or his History and Heritage Tours that will take you to places outside the normal world tourist locations. History has been Graham Fleeton’s passion since the 1960s when he was a young Lieutenant in the University of New South Wales Regiment.

The retired Colonel is a military history expert and has been sharing his passion and knowledge with travellers for over 20 years. His first tour was in 1999 after two of his Battalion Sergeants said they would like to visit battlefields where Australians fought and hear his accounts of what happened.

Since then his tours have taken in ancient battlefields such as Thermopylae where the Spartans were defeated while protecting Athens, Culloden where the pride of the Scottish Highlands was heavily defeated while trying to support Bonnie Prince Charlie’s return and also the famous battlefields of Crecy, Agincourt and Waterloo.

“By visiting those areas of past conflict, we become aware of the history as we walk the ground but when visiting those battlefields where Australians were involved, we also ensure that those who were lost there, shall always be remembered,” he said.

Travelling Overseas, the reasons why we travel.

More Australians have been travelling overseas than ever before. When the decision to travel is taken, it can be for a variety of reasons but the planning it is hoped will lead to the experience that is expected while away. Excluding business travel, that usually has an expected outcome, visiting family or for recreational and holiday travel all have different expectations. In April 1941, Australian forces joined with their New Zealand and British allies in Greece to meet head-on the invading German army. Facing overwhelming odds, the defence of ‘the home of democracy’ was seen as a risky endeavour. After a month of intense fighting the Allied Forces were evacuated from the mainland, with many then returning to the battle in the attempted defence of Crete, before again being overwhelmed by sheer scale of numbers. On the 80th Anniversary of this historic campaign, History and Heritage Tours led by Col. Graham Fleeton and Dr. Elena Sulioti, invites you to travel with them to Greece and Crete to see first-hand the sites of ANZAC military significance including key areas of engagement, war graves and memorials and a special invitation to attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Athens. The Epic Love Saga Of Croatian Storks Malena And Klepetan Is A Valentine's Day Story For The Ages

Stjepan Vokić found Malena with an injured wing in 1993 and decided to adopt her (Credit: Jana Water/Instagram)

BY DAKSHA MORJARIA

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, people worldwide are scrambling to find the perfect way to show their appreciation for their loved ones. For most, that means buying gifts ranging from cards to chocolates, flowers, expensive outings, and even fine jewelry. However, as the world's most famous stork couple Klepetan and Malena have proved, showering family and friends with material objects is not the only way to demonstrate true love. The events leading to the epic love story began in 1993, when Stjepan Vokić — then a caretaker at a school in Brodski Varos in eastern Croatia — stumbled upon an injured female stork whose wing had been severely damaged by a hunter's bullet. Vokić decided to adopt the helpless bird, who had permanently lost her ability to fly. He named her Malena, which means little or small in Croatian. To try to provide the bird with as normal a life as possible, he built a nest for her on his roof every spring and summer. During winter, when the other storks migrated to warmer locations, Vokić would house Malena inside his warm garage.

In spring 2003, Vokić noticed that Malena had a regular companion — a male stork, who he later named Klepetan for the knocking sound the birds make with their beaks. When winter came, the stork flew away to warmer grounds, but to Vokić's astonishment, returned the following year to spend the spring and summer months with Malena, a routine he has maintained since. An electronic tracker fitted on Klepetan indicated that he spends the winters 8,000 miles (13,000 km) away in Cape Town, Africa!

Fortunately, Vokić always keeps a bucket of fish ready when the exhausted and starving bird — whose migration route takes him over the Horn of Africa, Somalia, Sinai, and the Iraqi deserts — returns to Croatia annually on March 24th. Over the years, the stork couple, who have had 66 chicks, have become national and global celebrities, with a children's book and a play dedicated to their undying affection for one another. "It is a really special story about love. The way he returns each year, and how he doesn't care about her injury and the fact that they are apart for long months, it's just amazing. She is so sad when he leaves. Sometimes, we watch TV together, and I show her a video

46

of her stork family: her, Klepetan, and their chicks. When she sees Klepetan, she starts to cry," Vokić told Chinese news agency Xinhua. In 2019, when Klepetan returned to Brodski Varoš on March 18, a week earlier than his scheduled time, there was some concern that the bird may be an imposter. However, the stork quickly proved skeptics wrong. "He went straight to the bucket of fish, which was empty because I was not expecting him yet, and only he knows where to find it. Then, of course, we went to the nest just like every other year. That's Klepetan alright. It seems he couldn't wait to get back home to his Malena," Vokić said.

However, little did Vokić realize that Klepetan, who appeared extremely tired and unwell when he arrived, had come to bid his final farewell to Malena. He passed away shortly after. The caretaker says, "Four of them [the birds] came and began making some very sad noises. I knew then that Klepetan had gone, he had died. You know how they say that birds die singing." Klepetan is believed to have died soon after his 2019 visit with Melana (Credit: Croatia Tourism/YouTube Screen Capture)

Heartbreaking as Klepetan's loss is, Malena is fortunate to have a friend like Vokić. The 77-year-old, who lost his wife in 2018, says the stork keeps him occupied and is something to look forward to every day. "Malena gave birth to 66 little ones, that's enough for one mother. I'm very attached to her. I don't go to the coast or with friends anywhere. I always just worry about her," he said. What a heartwarming story of true love and friendship!

A Day In The Life Of Les Taylor

Skara Brae Nestled in the mossy, green hills on the Orkney Islands off Scotland is a secret older than the great pyramids of Egypt.

At first, it might not look like much, but the fact is, this is a unique and magical place. Because within this rolling hillside is a perfectly preserved prehistoric village called Skara Brae. The winter of 1850 hit Orkney hard. A severe storm caused great devastation and resulted in more than 200 deaths.

But it also revealed something long forgotten. When the storm abated, villagers discovered a settlement under the sand.

The settlement consists of eight stone houses and was inhabited between roughly 3180 and 2500 B.C., making Skara Brae one of the oldest agriculture villages in the UK. Skara Brae has been called the "Scottish Pompeii" because the ancient monument is so well preserved.

Since the surrounding sand and the buildings' architecture were well protected against the cold, both the buildings and their contents have been remarkably preserved throughout the millennia.

Archaeologists estimate that 50-100 people lived in the village. When the settlement was built, the houses were 1,500 [metres] from the sea.

Now, the sea has dug closer to the village and the view from the settlement has changed from pastures to the sea.

earlier than that.

Each residence could be closed off with a stone door.

And no one knows why the village was abandoned. But around 2500 B.C., the Orkney Islands became cooler and wetter.

The settlement's seven or eight houses were connected to each other by tunnels.

In every room, one bed was always bigger than the other, but no one knows why.

Each room also contains cabinets, dressers, seats, and storage boxes. These boxes were built to be waterproof, suggesting that they might have stored live seafood for later consumption.

One house is distinct from the other, however. Archaeologists didn't find any beds or other furniture. The house is believed to have functioned as a workshop. Amazingly, the village also had a sewage system and each house had its own toilet.

A number of mysterious discoveries have been made at the site, including this carved stone ball, though no one really knows what it was used for.

Many theories speculate about how the people of Skara Brae met their fate; the most popular ones involve a violent storm. What's the future look like for Skara Brae? Although the settlement was built nearly two [kilometres] from the beach,

in recent centuries, it has been increasingly threatened by the sea. Since 1926, the houses have been protected from the approaching sea and harsh autumn winds by a concrete wall.

Skara Brae was a society which centered around families. The dwellings are all quite similar,

There has been talk about building an artificial beach with boulders and breakwater to preserve Skara Brae and several other ancient monuments at risk of being destroyed. But nothing has happened yet.

Some believe that the villagers were Picts, a people of unknown origin who settled in eastern and northern Scotland

I personally hope that the Scottish Government will do all they can to preserve this amazing place.

Which led archaeologists to conclude that this society was a fairly equal one, without any authoritative leadership.

near the end of the British Iron Age. But archaeological findings have shown that the people who lived here could have lived much

Until further notice, tourists continue to visit this fascinating place, but the question is for how long?

Please share this with others so that more people get the chance to discover the wonder that is history!

A Day In The Life Of Les Taylor Lennie Gwyther with Ginger Mick, the horse he rode 1000 kilometres to attend the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The nine-year-old who rode a pony 1000km to Sydney A farmer's son's horseback ride to Sydney for the opening of the harbour bridge captured the Depression-era public's imagination. By Carolyn Webb Sourced Les Taylor

In 1932, nine-year-old Lennie Gwyther dreamed of being on the spot for the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The fact that he lived 1000 kilometres away in Leongatha, in south-eastern Victoria, didn't faze him. A new book tells the true story of how one February day, with his parents' blessing, he set off on what was to be a four-month odyssey with his pony, Ginger Mick. The book Lennie the Legend: Solo to Sydney By Pony, to be published by the National Library of Australia on February 1, tells how Lennie was feted at towns he and Ginger Mick stopped at such as Lakes Entrance, Cooma, and Bowral.

"IT WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE DEPRESSION, PEOPLE WERE LOOKING FOR GOOD NEWS STORIES, SO IT CAPTURED THE PUBLIC IMAGINATION," AUTHOR STEPHANIE OWEN REEDER SAID. On March 21, at a match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Lennie met his idol, Donald Bradman, who gave him a a signed cricket bat.

Lennie and Ginger Mick followed bush tracks and barely formed dirt roads east to Cann River then north to Canberra. Horse and boy survived a deranged tramp jumping out at them a few days into their ride, a bushfire near Traralgon, heavy rain and fogs. In the fledgling town of Canberra, where sheep grazed in front of (now Old) Parliament House, Lennie shook Prime Minister Joseph Lyons' hand, and took tea in the members' refreshment rooms.

Arriving in Sydney's Martin Place, Lennie and Ginger Mick were mobbed by the public and the press. Lennie met the lord mayor at Sydney Town Hall, visited Circular Quay and Bondi Beach and rode an elephant at Taronga Zoo. And on March 19, Lennie and Ginger Mick took part in the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening pageant, crossing the bridge among indigenous groups, war veterans, schoolchildren and bridge workers and saluting the governor-general and the NSW premier. Lennie convinced his father that he should ride Ginger Mick home. Back in Leongatha on June 10, a huge crowd turned out in the main street. More than 800 people attended a civic reception.

Reeder says Lennie being allowed to ride to Sydney amazed her, given "these days a nine-year-old child is probably not even allowed to walk to the shops by themselves". The ride came about when Lennie's father, Leo Tennyson Gwyther, a decorated World War I hero with chronic war injuries, broke his leg on the Gwyther farm in South Leongatha.

While he was in hospital, Lennie completed the ploughing and saved the crops. A thankful Leo asked how he could reward Lennie, and all he wanted was to see the majestic bridge in Sydney he had read about. Lennie mapped the route himself.

This week, South Gippsland shire councillor Bob Newton called for a statue of Lennie and Ginger Mick to be erected in Leongatha, and for more children to be told the story.

"IT IS ONE OF THE GREAT STORIES OF LEONGATHA, BUT PROBABLY NEVER RECOGNISED TOO MUCH. IT WAS AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT FOR SOMEONE TO RIDE ALL THAT WAY. UNBELIEVABLE." Ginger Mick lived to the age of 27 on the Gwyther farm. Lennie went on to marry, have a daughter and settle in the Melbourne

suburb of Hampton.

He worked as an experimental engineer at General Motors' Holden plant at Fishermans Bend, and also was a keen fisherman, astronomer, ice skater, and sailor.

At the time of his death, aged 70 in 1992, he was building a yacht, which he planned to sail to Tasmania and New Zealand.

Lennie's daughter, Mary Gwyther, said a statue would be a good way to honour his "wonderful achievement" in the 1932 ride to Sydney. Granddaughter Sally Gwyther said young people would be inspired by the book.

Sally, who was 17 when Lennie died, remembers him "always being very creative". "He had a lathe in the shed and he was always turning wood or making tools or tables. There wasn't really anything he couldn't do. I'm sure he would have attempted sailing around the world, that's how adventurous he was."
