Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.

Excel/UltraMax is a 36 stitch 10mm pile height synthetic surface, widely used throughout Australia by KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass in the construction of bowling greens. Manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, the Excel/ UltraMax is exclusive to Green Planet Grass and KCL Sports in Australia.

Jon Hastings from KCL Sports pioneered the use of polyethylene springlock yarns for the DryMax Pro synthetic bowling surface. Between them, KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have installed nearly 300 synthetic bowling greens. The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed

for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The Excel/UltraMax has been used in retirement and lifestyle villages for half size greens and in full size installations for bowling Clubs. As well as the Excel/UltraMax, KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass also offer a range of 12mm surfaces.

Both Green Planet Grass in Western Australia and KCL Sports on the east coast, offer a full maintenance programme to keep your synthetic grass bowling greens in peak condition for optimal performance and to extend the life of the green. This can include thatching to lift the pile, algae treatment, sand level adjustment and re-rolling of the surface.

Change in motion: keep moving at home In the current climate, many seniors living with cancer are experiencing challenging times as they cope with self-isolation.

Staying active can seem like a difficult task while stuck inside. But Cancer Council Queensland is working with Bodytrack Exercise Physiology to keep Queenslanders moving within the safety of their own homes. Nicole O’Loughlin from Bodytrack said telehealth is high on her radar, as she moves her tailored exercise programs from the gym to lounge rooms all over the state. Telehealth involves using video chat programs to take clients through an exercise routine, step by step, over the internet. It means that people self-isolating and living with cancer can

continue to access support and motivation.

The message is clear: “Cancer doesn’t stop for COVID-19, so neither do we.”

Ms O’Loughlin is passionate about using exercise therapy to enhance the lives of those with cancer. She believes she will continue to empower people through exercise, “enabling those with cancer to regain an element of control over their health in an already uncertain time.”

We could all do with a little exercise therapy in the current situation! Not only does it boost the immune system, but it also heightens morale. Furthermore, regular exercise is known to reduce the risk of developing cancer – so it’s a preventative measure too! Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said that at least one quarter of all cancer cases are preventable through maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“Every Queenslander has the power to reduce the impact of cancer for themselves through making healthy lifestyle choices. Thank you to Nicole and the team at Bodytrack for

empowering Queenslanders to keep healthy in the current climate,” Ms McMillan said.

Many people can benefit from tailored exercise advice during this time. It’s fantastic to see everyone coming together to find ways to continue these support services during a period when it is needed most. If you are living with cancer and experiencing stress or anxiety due to the presence of COVID-19 in Australia, don’t forget that Cancer Council Queensland are here to help. Colonel Graham Fleeton, aided by his experienced Military Historians invites you to join him on his Battlefield History Tours, to those Battlefields where Australians had fought or his History and Heritage Tours that will take you to places outside the normal world tourist locations. History has been Graham Fleeton’s passion since the 1960s when he was a young Lieutenant in the University of New South Wales Regiment.

The retired Colonel is a military history expert and has been sharing his passion and knowledge with travellers for over 20 years. His first tour was in 1999 after two of his Battalion Sergeants said they would like to visit battlefields where Australians fought and hear his accounts of what happened.

Since then his tours have taken in ancient battlefields such as Thermopylae where the Spartans were defeated while protecting Athens, Culloden where the pride of the Scottish Highlands was heavily defeated while trying to support Bonnie Prince Charlie’s return and also the famous battlefields of Crecy, Agincourt and Waterloo.

“By visiting those areas of past conflict, we become aware of the history as we walk the ground but when visiting those battlefields where Australians were involved, we

Travelling Overseas, the reasons why we travel.

More Australians have been travelling overseas than ever before. When the decision to travel is taken, it can be for a variety of reasons but the planning it is hoped will lead to the experience that is expected while away. Excluding business travel, that usually has an expected outcome, visiting family or for recreational and holiday travel all have different expectations. The travellers may take part in all onshore excursions or be selective or spend time aboard relaxing and watching the world go by. It is also an excellent 10

also ensure that those who were lost there, shall always be remembered,” he said. Studying Military History as an officer enabled him to further his tactical and strategic thinking.

He was Commanding Officer of an Infantry Battalion and of the first Army Reserve Recruiting Unit and was the first Director of the Army Personnel Agency.

His final posting before he retired in 2004 was the Honorary Colonel for Australian Cadets. As well as leading tours across the world he is Chairman of the Board of the Army Museum of New South Wales and President of the Defence Reserves Association. In response, following requests from those who had toured with him, he has successfully now conducted special tours such as his UK History and Heritage Railway Tour and his recent Cathedrals and Abbeys of England Tour.

Tours will include the ANZAC Day service at Villers Bretonneux in France and include his Bomber Command Tour and UK History and Heritage Railway Tour which was especially created for steam train enthusiasts and includes many train journeys, including some train spotting, such as the Flying Scotsman as it heads off to Carlisle from York. option for those who are not as mobile as they once were, once settled into their cabin all is close by for the duration of their holiday. Recreational holidays that include actively engaging in sporting or adventure type activities which usually attract younger travellers wanting activity and adventure but not necessarily general site seeing. Sporting groups can be of all ages and travel for experience and competition. These groups can be Bowlers, Shooters, Golfers and Fishing groups to name a few and wanting to experience competition, or not, but being able to do so within other cultures .

Returning home or to visit family members who reside overseas has generally a specific aim that keeps the family together even though they are living apart. Many also travel to immerse themselves within other cultures including the opportunity to experience the different cuisine of the area . This can be by planned escorted tours or individual travel that allows flexibility on movement through the areas of interest. Then you have that traveller who is interested in the history and heritage of an area, its people and culture and then as part of that tour, to be able

to experience that which pervades the areas of conflict where Australian Servicemen and Women had served our country and to remember those who were lost. Colonel Fleeton and his Historians have been escorting such travellers for over 20 years but now with his Battlefield History Tours and incorporating his History and Heritage Tours he has been able to introduce new exciting and successful concepts. Due to the current situation with the pandemic sweeping across the world, Battlefield History Tours has cancelled all its tours for 2020 and those booked on those tours have either been fully refunded or have decided to postpone their travel until the 2021 season. There is now an opportunity to also join Colonel Fleeton and his Historians on his fully escorted tours for 2021.

THE BATTLE FOR GREECE AND CRETE COMMEMORATIVE TOUR Apr 8 2021

In April 1941, Australian forces joined with their New Zealand and British allies in Greece to meet head-on the invading German army. Facing overwhelming odds, the defence of ‘the home of democracy’ was seen as a risky endeavour. After a month of intense fighting the Allied Forces were evacuated from the mainland, with many then returning to the battle in the attempted defence of Crete, before again being overwhelmed by sheer scale of numbers. On the 80th Anniversary of this historic campaign, History and Heritage Tours led by Col. Graham Fleeton and Dr. Elena Sulioti, invites you to travel with them to Greece and Crete to see first-hand the sites of ANZAC military significance including key areas of engagement, war graves and memorials and a special invitation to attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Athens. Also included are tours of significant sites of Ancient Greece - Athens, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora, plus visits to many local villages. The tour will follow that campaign 100 years later, advancing across The Somme to the scene of their final confrontation at Montbrehain. BOWLS’ TOUCHING MOMENTS FOR BUSHFIRE RELIEF

While the sadness of the recent bushfire disaster has touched the hearts of people across the length and breadth of Australia, recent touching moments of a different nature have provided wonderful assistance to the relief effort. Three-time Commonwealth Games medallist, Barrie Lester, initiated a fundraising idea among the bowling fraternity at the recently completed Bowls Premier League 11 (#BPL11) event at the Moama Bowling Club to help those affected by the disaster. Lester, originally from Gippsland, and playing for the Melbourne Pulse in the Bowls Premier League, offered, via social media, to donate $10 from every ‘toucher’ he made during the tournament to bushfire relief efforts.

That generosity soon attracted the attention of others involved in the event and the momentum to help those most in need began to gather speed, and quickly, during the four-day event. Lester’s two Melbourne Pulse teammates,

12

Natasha Scott and Gary Kelly, matched Lester’s offer and also contributed $10 for every one of their touchers as well.

Melbourne Pulse license owner, the Dandenong Club, followed suit and donated $20 for each of their team’s touchers while Lester’s employer, the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club on the Gold Coast, matched the Dandenong Club’s generous contribution. Members and friends of the clubs and bowlers also contributed, resulting in a total of $4,850 raised for bushfire relief. The team had 85 touchers across the fourdays of competition.

A proud Lester said it was a simple idea that became something much more and delivered a really positive outcome. “Coming from the Gippsland area that was

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

so badly affected, I initially thought how could I help and what could I do to have an impact,” he said.

“We know only too well how sports and sporting communities rally behind important causes of humanity and it is heart-warming for me that the sport of bowls and people in bowls close to me have jumped on board to help, especially the Dandenong Club who were the first to commit their support. “Bowls clubs in Australia are so often affected by natural disasters and it is no different this time around so I was just hopeful of making a small difference and, with the support others, I think we have.”

All monies raised were donated to Bowls Australia’s Disaster Relief Fund, for which Lester is an ambassador.

BOWLS DISASTER RELIEF FUND MONEY ALLOCATED TO BUSHFIREAFFECTED CLUBS

After an outpouring of generosity from the bowls community, Bowls Australia (BA) has been able to allocate some funds from its Bowls Disaster Relief Fund (BDRF) to help several clubs impacted by last summer’s bushfires. Individuals, clubs and organisations from around Australia and the world dug deep into their pockets throughout January and February to help fellow bowlers who had been affected by the devastating blazes. Impacted clubs that will receive financial assistance via the BDRF are: • Adelong Services and Bowling Club (NSW) • Corryong Bowls Club (VIC)

• Lake Conjola Bowling and Recreation Club (NSW) • Mallacoota Inlet Bowling Club (NSW)

14

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

• Parndana Bowling Club (SA)

• Tomakin Sports & Social Club (NSW)

Allocations have been made to support these clubs on their road to recovery in whatever way the fires may have impacted their club. Mallacoota Inlet Bowling Club president Allan Dobbin said the generosity from people around Australia had been ‘overwhelming’. “We have had donations from everywhere,” he said.

“So many people we don’t know and have never met have just been so generous. It gives you some real faith in the people we have in this country.” A variety of different methods were used to fundraise for the BDRF, from raffles and auctions, to exhibition bowls matches and even a BPL team getting involved. Melbourne Pulse raised funds from its players and franchise owner Dandenong Club for every toucher the team had at BPL12 at Moama, eventually raising close to $4500. BA Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple said it was heartwarming to see how the bowls community came together to support each other. “It was tremendous to see the level of support from people across Australia and the world to help those who had been affected by the fires,” he said. “The Bowls Disaster Relief Fund is a great way for Bowls Australia and the bowls community to play a small part in helping clubs on the road to recovery.”

BOWLS DUO JOIN AUSSIE ATHLETES UNITING FOR LIFELINE

BCiB Australian Jackaroo Natasha Van Eldik and recentlyretired international teammate Karen Murphy will join a host of Australian athletes in championing a joint-initiative between the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Lifeline Australia.

Now in its second year, the partnership between AIS and Lifeline Australia will help deliver the impactful community engagement program, with athletes stepping up to help increase awareness around suicide prevention and encourage anyone who needs support to reach out and ask for help. Van Eldik and Murphy are among 22 current and former Australian athletes named AIS-Lifeline Community Custodians for 2020-21.

The immediate focus for this year’s Custodian cohort will be lending their voices to Lifeline’s first-ever National Emergency Appeal, which is in direct response to the impact of COVID-19.

The campaign ‘You’ve got 30 seconds to save a life’ is aiming to raise $5 million to fill the funding gap caused by the cancellation of key fundraising events, storefront closures and increasing demand for services. Australians are turning to Lifeline in greater numbers than ever before, with the organisation receiving almost 90,000 calls for help in March alone, the most in their 57-year history.

Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life. The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively.

Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists. Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction. A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older 16

Kenny Rogers 1938 - 2020

One of the greatest power houses in country music history Kenny Rogers, has passed away at the age of 81. Rogers had been in the music business for over 6 decades and his passing has left an undeniable void in the heart and soul of the music industry. During his career he sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the most successful artists of all time. However, it is his duet with Dolly Parton “ISLANDS IN THE STREAM’’ which was released in 1983 that inspired generations of artists and fans worldwide. The song, written by the Bee Gees won

“THE ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARD’’ in 1984 and “THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD’’ in 1985. Rogers was born in Houston, Texas in 1938. He won a talent show at The Texan Theatre in 1949, which led to limited success and a recording career as a teenage rock and roller, as early as the 1950’s.

However, by 1970 Rogers had successfully crossed over to country-pop which ultimately culminated into one of the most successful music careers of all time.

NOT ALL HEROES “WEAR CAPES” The Coronavirus pandemic is currently creating great challenges worldwide. One of the biggest obstacles we are facing is remaining optimistic while we relentlessly fight the Pandemic which has had a detrimental effect on many countries around the world, resulting in enormous loss of life. However, Heroes such as health workers and people in essential services are risking their lives every day in a bid to try and keep us safe and fight the biggest medical disaster in modern history.

These extraordinary heroes working on the front line have been instrumental in keeping the death count in Australia comparatively low, and have remarkably suppressed infection rates. They are also supporting families and communities in need while helping to avoid a catastrophic health crisis. The novel coronavirus does not discriminate, and no one is immune. Fortunately the unwavering commitment of health care workers, access to excellent testing and treatment is resulting in a vast majority of cases diagnosed in Australia miraculously surviving. However, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard, urgers Australians against complacency and said “there was still a long road ahead.’’ Mr Hazzard reiterated that “strict social distancing measures and improved hand washing procedures were paramount in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Britain’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson a survivor of the deadly pandemic recently praised the NHS (National Health Service) and the medical team at St. Thomas Hospital in London, where he was successfully treated, with an emotional statement.

“I HAVE TODAY LEFT HOSPITAL AFTER A WEEK IN WHICH THE NHS HAS SAVED MY LIFE, NO QUESTION. IT’S HARD TO FIND THE WORDS TO EXPRESS MY DEBT.’’ ********BORIS JOHNSON********* Global tributes for our healthcare workers are now pouring in from around the world with people cheering and giving our medical heroes a standing ovation in appreciation for their work and dedication. The worldwide applause for our front-line medical staff began in the city of Wuhan in China, where the virus originated.

The phenomenon of deafening applause soon spread to other countries under lockdown such as The United Kingdom, Paris, Spain, Tuckey and India. People under lockdown are showing their gratitude to the front-line healthcare workers worldwide by applauding them. In the United Kingdom, Prince William and

It is extremely difficult not to be impressed with the numerous achievements of our very own Olivia Newton-John. During her career, she has achieved phenomenal success as a singer, songwriter, actress and passionate activist.

She is also the recipient of four Grammy Awards, and has amassed five number one hits, and two number one albums during her amazing career. NEWTON-JOHN HAS SOLD AN ESTIMATED 100 MILLION RECORDS WORLDWIDE

Newton-John first captured our imaginations in 1963, when she won a talent contest on the popular Australian television show “SING SING SING.’’ Olivia was however, completely oblivious at the time that her appearance on the show would change her destiny. Subsequently, and as a direct result of that infamous talent quest, Olivia’s career was propelled into the dizzy heights of super stardom, which includes legends of fans worldwide, numerous awards and unimaginable stardom beyond her wildest dreams.

Newton-John was born in England, in 1948. However, the family relocated to Australia when Olivia was five, due to her father being offered a position at the University of Melbourne. Olivia and her mother returned to live in England a decade later. It was during this time that Olivia released her first single “TILL YOU SAY YOU’LL BE MINE’’ under the guidance of Decca Records. Unfortunately, the record made minimal impact and failed to achieve the desired success expected. However things changed drastically in 1971, when Newton-John released her first solo album “IF NOT FOR YOU’’ followed in quick succession by the hit single “BANKS OF THE OHIO’’ which became a top ten hit worldwide. That same year, she was also voted Best British Female vocalist for 2 years in a row by the British Magazine “Record Mirror. Olivia moved to the United States in 1975 on the recommendation of her friend and fellow Aussie Helen Reddy. Her career soared after she starred in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Grease in 1978 alongside John Travolta. She went on to achieve enormous success as a recording artist, which secured her a place in music history. IN 1979 SHE RECEIVED AN OBE (OFFICER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH 11 AND IN 1981 SHE WAS INCLUDED IN THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME. MEET BEAR, THE REMARKABLE HERO WHO FINDS INJURED KOALAS THAT HAVE SURVIVED THE AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES

26

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

BEAR, is a border collie/cattle dog cross breed, who was abandoned as a puppy because he displayed signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is now one of the most important team members deployed to detect injured koalas in fire damaged areas of New South Wales and Queensland. Bear was rescued by “THE DETECTION DOGS FOR CONSERVATION PROGRAMME’’ in 2016. They were after high-energy dogs that could happily spend hours in the bush with researchers. Bear was the perfect fit for the programme. He is highly focused and brilliant at focusing on one thing. He also has zero “prey drive’’ which is critical for a wildlife detection dog, as they need to focus on the scent, not the animal. Bear’s acute sense of smell and soft nature towards other animals made him the perfect choice for the job. The programme has 5 dogs, with 2 of the dogs dedicated to sniffing out koala scats. The 4 legged team of detection dogs help in locating sick and injured koalas for wildlife carers who are dedicated in preserving koalas and their habitat. BEAR was recently immortalised in a television documentary, which followed his journey as he worked tirelessly to find sick and injured koalas as a result of the recent bushfires. The one-hour special “BEAR/KOALA HERO’’ highlighted Bear’s many achievements and his remarkable skills at tracking down sick and injured Koalas. The documentary also explored the heroic efforts of the firefighters, animal rescuers and the animals themselves. Story Courtesy Of Catherine Colusso

Timeshare in the 80s and 90s made perfect sense; but the world has changed. We’ve all gotten a little older and wiser and can now surf the internet for everything and anything including holidays. There are package holidays, all-inclusive holidays, all-inclusive cruises, adventure holidays, and more. There is literally a holiday out there for everyone, and all these companies are competing for our business. It’s great for the consumer but not great for people left in the Timeshare system. Timeshare was an amazing product and gave us all some of our best family memories. However, what was once a great idea has now sadly become a major liability for those same people who shared all these memorable vacations.

Timeshare from the 80s was sold with much talk, and on the basis that it was a future investment for our children and grandchildren. With the introduction of the internet, and maintenance costs increasing annually, those same freehold titles have now become a ticking time bomb for the next generation. Maintenance levies of $100 have now turned into $900 plus a year, for every Timeshare week owned. The ongoing reality is ever- increasing costs, with aging resorts, and less customers wishing to stay. Timeshare is a thing of the past. The time for change has arrived. We now have easy access to the internet, travel apps, Airbnb and luxuryescapes.com at our fingertips. Our children and grandchildren plan trips to Sydney or even Europe on the spur of a Saturday night dinner with friends. Unfortunately, Timeshare has been left behind. The product has become outdated and non-functional. The good news is there is a way out. “MEXIT’’

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF ROYAL LIFE FOR

Harry and Meghan Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, recently fulfilled their final royal commitment as senior royals, when they appeared at the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey in London. The service marked the end of a two-month dilemma that began when the couple announced in January their plans to walk away from their roles as senior members of Britain’s Royal Family. The couple, who married in 2018 also expressed their desire to relocate to North America and “become financially independent.’’ It appears that Harry and Meghan hoped they could “balance’’ their time between Britain and North America, while continuing to honour and serve the Queen. However, there is no precedent in place for a part-time role in the House of Windsor, and their decision was met with catastrophic outrage from certain senior members of the Royal household.

Consequently their desire to become part-time royals was also met with anguish by British taxpayers, who labelled their requests as “disrespectful and scandalous.’’ It later transpired, British taxpayers collectively insisted the couple repay the $4.8 million of public money spent to renovate the house in Windsor, where they initially planned to live.

Subsequently, and as a direct result of the “Mexit scandal’’ speculation by the media of a “royal rift’’ between Prince Harry and his older brother Prince William intensified and sparked a major crisis for the Royal Family.

Prince Harry, was forced to reluctantly address the issue by declaring

“FOR ME, AND FOR MY WIFE, THERE IS A LOT OF STUFF THAT HURTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MAJORITY OF ITS UNTRUE.” “I WILL NOT BE BULLIED INTO PLAYING A GAME THAT KILLED MY MOTHER.”

Finally, after an urgent family summit involving Prince Charles and Prince William. The Queen announced that Harry and Meghan would stop carrying out royal duties in March. They were also expected to pay back the renovation costs and would no longer receive public funding. She also added that Harry and Meghan would always be part of the Royal family, however they would not 30

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

be allowed to use the word “Royal’’ to earn a living. This meant that the couple had to abandon plans to use the “Sussex Royal’’ brand for financial gain.

The couple are now expected to earn their keep through speaking engagements and personal appearances. However, their agreement with the Queen calls for their decision to be revisited in a year. The couple, who have recently moved to Los Angeles have reportedly given an interview to journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand who are writing a biography on the couple. Speculation suggests the book will tackle the many rumours and misconceptions that have plagued the couple and will finally capture the real Harry and Meghan.

Only time will tell whether Harry and Meghan choose to remain “financially independent’’ or choose to return to Royal duties. Prince Harry has indicated that he has a special bond with British military causes, and he promised he would not abandon the cause. Story Courtesy Of Catherine Colusso

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Australia's leading provider of PRP and Stem Cell therapy

Healing | Muscles - Injuries - Joints

Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. As a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

DO I REALLY NEED A TOTAL

KNEE REPLACEMENT? Prof Riaz Khan – The Joint Studio Total knee replacement (TKR) for a painful joint riddled with osteoarthritis (OA) is an excellent option, and pretty much the only surgical solution that currently exists.

modern designs of knee replacements are, they cannot mimic a normal knee. So, preserving the ligaments with a UKR results in a knee with more normal, more natural movement.

However, about half of our patients present to us with OA in part of their knee only. Typically, they complain of pain on the inner side of the knee, and X-rays show bone on bone wear of the inner half of the main joint [red arrow].

3. Why remove more bone than required? The volume of bone that needs to be removed for a TKR is 50cm3, compared to 2-3cm3 for a UKR. So, bone is being conserved for the future.

Figure 3: TKR

Figure 1: Xray of knee; OA inner side

MRI scans show the cartilage/meniscus (the natural shock-absorbers) on the inner side of the joint have disappeared, whiteness in the bone (bony bruising, or oedema) [white arrows], and often perfect cartilage/meniscus on the outer side of the joint [red arrow].

But this means removing the good cartilage/ meniscus on the outer side of the knee: you could say “throwing the baby out with the bath water”. As a result, surgeons in Oxford England developed the partial replacement, or unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR). This operation involves resurfacing the worn inner side of the knee (again, both on the femur and tibia, with a plastic shim in between), but preserving not only the cartilage/meniscus natural shock absorbers on the outer side of the joint, but also the anterior (ACL) and posterior (PCL) cruciate ligaments, one or both of which are sacrificed for a TKR.

4. The complication rates (such as infection or blood clot) from surgery following a UKR is much lower than a TKR 5. The operation is less invasive, with a shorter incision and less damage to muscles

6. In-patient stay is shorter (typically 3 days rather than 5) 7. Recovery is quicker

8. Patients return to work sooner

9. It is much more likely that UKR patients will return to sports than TKR patients 10. Satisfaction levels are higher with the UKR 11. If the rest of the joint wears out with time, the UKR can be converted to a TKR, so that option remains open.

So, what are the downsides? Frankly few, other than it being a technically more challenging operation: working in a confined space whilst maintaining integrity of the knee ligaments. Prof Riaz Khan FRACS PhD

Figure 2: MRI of same knee

These patients are generally younger and more active than those that present with arthritis throughout the knee, often still trying to play tennis or bowls.

Until relatively recently, the only way to surgically treat these patients, was with a TKR. This means removing all the cartilage of the joint, good or bad, and attaching a new metal surface to the end of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia), with a plastic shim between the two. 32

Figure 4: UKR

What are the advantages of a partial/ unicompartmental knee replacement?

1. Nature has produced the most amazing shock absorber called joint cartilage; nothing man-made comes close to being as good. So, why not preserve it when it doesn’t need to be removed? 2. The ACL and PCL are critical for natural knee movement; hence the lengths surgeons go to to reconstruct them in sports people. However good

RECOLLECTIONS OF MY FAVOURITE CELEBRITY INTERVIEWS

Over the years I have had the unique privilege of providing readers with an intimate insight into the private lives of celebrities from all over the world. In the following article I will attempt to give readers a further glimpse into the world of some of my favourite celebrities and highlight my memories of these extraordinary characters, who continue to fuel public fascination daily. SCREEN POWERHOUSE TONY BONNER AM IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ICONS AUSTRALIA HAS EVER PRODUCED. I recently had the enormous opportunity to catch up with Tony and chat about the things that are important to him. His family, his extraordinary career, charity work and life in general. 36

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

I remember feeling very nervous and somewhat overwhelmed at the thought of interviewing a Legend of this magnitude. I did however manage to convey a serene persona during the interview, even though my anxiety levels had escalated to the point of no return. Unsurprisingly, I found myself completely mesmerised by Tony’s intriguing journey into the world of film, television and live theatre. I particularly enjoyed his celebrity stories which included many references to Hollywood Legends past and present. In particular his memorable recollections of working with great actors such as Charles Bronson, Roger Moore and Tony Curtis which incidentally triggered my inquisitiveness to mammoth proportions. I subsequently watched his face light up when he spoke about the dedication he has for his family and grandchildren. He also spoke passionately about his craft and informed me that he devotes many hours running acting classes and nurturing ‘’up and coming’’ young actors, which I found very inspiring. I found Tony to be extremely articulate, coupled with a staggering recollection of dates and events past and present. He was enthusiastic, very focussed and generous with his time and willingly engaged in conversation. It is not surprising this man has captured the heart of our nation. He is the quintessential gentleman, coupled with ‘undeniable rock’n’roll swagger.

Catherine’s Column TRUE BLUE LEGEND JOHN WILLIAMSON has had an amazing career for over fifty years. However, I was humbled and suitably impressed by his passion for highlighting conservation issues and his love for Australian wildlife, which has now eclipsed his sensational music career. It gave me great joy listening to John explain the concept of his song ‘’Good Bye Blinky Bill’’ which was conceived because of John’s concern regarding the preservation of our precious koalas. John is the ultimate ‘’Wildlife Warrior’’ who has dedicated much of his life to their preservation. I was tremendously inspired by his passion and in awe of his achievements, I found him to be very humble and extremely approachable, almost to the point of being shy about his enormous achievements both in music and his conservation work. He is void of any illusions of grandeur when it comes to his phenomenal career and feels that he is extremely lucky that he is still popular which I found refreshing................................

NORMIE ROWE was an absolute delight to interview, and I could not help feeling ‘STAR-STRUCK” when I took a trip down memory lane with the living legend. However, I was astounded and pleasantly surprised to find him down to earth and charismatic, and most obliging with his answers to some difficult questions that I asked. I was very aware that Normie had suffered tremendous personal loss following the loss of his son, and his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a direct result of his time in Vietnam. However, there was never a moment that he was lost for words, he literally had me giggling throughout the entire interview which I found comforting considering his meteoric rise to fame. I found his approach to storytelling entertaining and articulate and I enjoyed his wild sense of humour and enormous personality.

It was a dream come true and an enormous privilege for me to interview the one and only Marcia Hines. I found her to be a stunning combination of beauty, talent and unrelenting positive energy. She is one of the most obliging celebrities that I have ever come across and her extraordinary character and personality shine through every word she utters. One of the things that stood out about Marcia was the connection and gratitude she felt towards her late mother Esmeralda, whom she very proudly described as ‘’her backbone and an exceptional role model.’’ Marcia is an extremely grounded person who is totally unaffected by her success. She has a very positive outlook on life and does not take her success for granted.

Aurora Australis in Operation for Thirty Years By The Maritime Executive 2019-11-18 18:37:11

The Australian Antarctic Division is commemorating the 30th birthday of the Antarctic research vessel Aurora Australis this year. It is also expected to be her last year of service, as she is to be replaced by the Nuyina currently under construction by Damen Shipyards.

Aurora Australis master Gerry O'Doherty says: “We're very fond of the old girl. It will be sad to see it go, but it's the end of an era, and this is the last season of this contract for the ship. Look, it may come back to Antarctica in a different role, who knows. But certainly the role that this ship performs now will be superseded by the new ship Nuyina.”

Aurora Australis (Photo: Wendy Pyper)

Aurora Australis is named after the southern hemisphere atmospheric phenomenon, the aurora australis. Designed as a multi-purpose research and resupply ship, she was built by Carrington Slipways in Newcastle for P&O Polar and launched in September 1989. The ship is 94.9 meters long and 3,911 tonnes in weight. She has a cruising speed of 13 knots and accommodates 116 passengers.

The Aurora Australis regularly sails across the Southern Ocean where storms can generate 10 meter high seas and winds of 120–150 km/h. The ship has been known to roll up to 45 degrees in big swells. In these situations the angle of the deck is far steeper than any streets in Australia.

The ship is capable of breaking ice up to 1.23 meters thick and is fitted with a helipad and hangar facilities for three helicopters. She has a trawl deck, purpose designed for marine science and oceanographic work. A wide range of science is conducted in onboard laboratories including biological, oceanography and meteorological experiments and observations. Expeditioners are accommodated in small cabins that sleep three or four people on bunk beds. The beds fold away into couches to save space, and each cabin has its own bathroom and toilet. The ship also has a gym, library and recreation areas.

On a six week voyage, the ship’s kitchen can go through 4,500 eggs, 1,000 kg of potatoes and 280 liters of ice cream. The ship can produce up to 45,000 liters of fresh water per day.

Wonder if this may be the origin of calling someone a dipstick?

In case you forgot to change the batteries in your calendar, you may not be aware that this year is the 100th anniversary of Citroën. While doing some research I happened to stumble upon a fascinating bit of wartime Citroën lore. It involves screwing with Nazis in a genuinely clever and subtle way that nevertheless had big repercussions. I'll explain. So, when France was occupied by the Germans in 1940, major French factories like Citroën were forced to produce

equipment for the Nazis. Citroën president Pierre-Jules Boulanger knew he couldn't just refuse to produce anything, but he also knew there's no way in hell he's going to just roll over and build trucks for a bunch of filthy Nazis. Pierre had a plan. John Reynold's book Citroën 2CV describes Boulanger's sabotage efforts. Of course, he instructed workers to set a nice, leisurely pace when building trucks (likely Citroën T45 trucks) for the Wermacht, but that's fairly obvious. What was brilliant was Boulanger's idea to move the little notch on the trucks' oil dipsticks that indicated the proper level of oil down just a bit lower. By moving the notch down, the trucks would not have enough oil, but German mechanics would have no idea, because, hey,

A 100-year-old woman says drinking wine is the secret to a long life!

A woman who celebrated her 100th birthday has revealed her secret to living longer - a love of wine!

When Florence Bearse from Maine, New York, was asked how she had reached such a grand old age, she revealed she loved nothing more than a regular tipple saying, “I like my wine. Don’t take it away from me.” And the US centenarian might just have a point.

It's such a fantastic act of sabotage: it's extremely cheap to implement, it's subtle, there's no way to see something amiss is happening as the trucks are being built, and it delivers its blow away from the site of the sabotage and when it will cause the most inconvenience and trouble. That's some mighty good sabotaging, Pierre.

The results came from the 90+ Study, a research project out of the University of California Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders that examines the lifestyle and habits of people who live to at least 90.

Last year, research presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference, found that drinking in moderation can be linked to living longer.

Drinking about two glasses of wine or beer a day was linked to an 18% drop in a person’s risk of early death.

With thanks to Yang Kim, Secretary, QAKV for this information. Dear Korea veterans, families and friends,

Lunar (Chinese) New year starts Today, the 25th of January 2020. It is the Year of Rat. In more detail – 2020 is the White Rat year. (White Metal Rat Year) Explanation?: Chinese New Year 2020 animal sign is the White Rat. Chinese calendar combines solar, lunar and 60 Stem-Branch counting systems. The 60 Stem-Branch calendar uses the names of Yin Yang Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth) and 12 animals to rank the sequences. Five elements are connected to five colors - White, Black, Green, Red, and Brown. So the Chinese use the color animal name to count the year. The name of 2020 is the Male Metal Rat. White is connected to Metal. Therefore, 2020 is also called White Metal Rat Year.

the little notch on the dipstick says its just fine. Then, after the truck has been used for a while and is out deployed somewhere crucial, whammo, the engine seizes up, and you've got a lot of angry, stranded, vulnerable Nazis, balling up their little fists and redly barking curses in German.

Anyway… White Rat year comes around in 60 years. Year 1900 and Year 1960 was the last two White Rat year. I guess there are no Korea veterans of White Rat. The year of rat comes around every 12 years. 1924 was Green Wood Rat Year and 1936 Red Fire Rat Year. Surely we have Korea Veterans born in those years. February 5, 1924 to January 23, 1925 - Green Wood Rat or January 24, 1936 to February 10, 1937 - Red

This research goes hand-in-hand with a 2015 study of people with mild Alzheimer’s who found that moderate drinkers were less likely to die during the study’s follow-up period than those who did not drink at all.

And whether or not drinking wine is the key to Florence's long life, the birthday girl also has another life tip to dish out. "Don't take any baloney," she told reporters. Sounds pretty good to us! Source Internet

Fire Rat James McLean (HMAS Sydney) is Green Wood Rat. The map illustrates how large Australia is compared to other countries The following is by Douglas Adams of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" fame.

place. Where other landmasses and sovereign lands are classified as continent, island or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this.

"Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognizable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge into the girting sea. Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight", proving that not only are they covering up a more Frightening theory but they can't spell either.

But even the spiders won't go near the sea. Any visitors should be careful to check inside boots (before putting them on), under toilet seats (before sitting down) and generally everywhere else. A stick is very useful for this task.

The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the

42

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

The second confusing thing about Australia is the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep. It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all.

A Day In The Life Of Les Taylor The last confusing thing about Australia is the inhabitants.

A short history: Sometime around 40,000 years ago some people arrived in boats from the north. They ate all the available food, and a lot of them died. The ones who survived learned respect for the balance of nature, man's proper place in the scheme of things, and spiders. They settled in and spent a lot of the intervening time making up strange stories. Then, around 200 years ago, Europeans arrived in boats from the north. More accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few deranged people in charge. They tried to plant their crops in autumn (failing to take account of the reversal of the seasons), ate all their food, and a lot of them died.

About then the sheep arrived, and have been treasured ever since. It is interesting to note here that the Europeans always consider themselves vastly superior to any other race they encounter, since they can lie, cheat, steal and litigate (marks of a civilized culture they say), whereas all the Aboriginals can do is happily survive being left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert, equipped with a stick. Eventually, the new lot of people stopped being Europeans on 'extended holiday' and became Australians. The changes are subtle, but deep, caused by the mind-stretching expanses of nothingness and eerie quiet, where a person can sit perfectly still and look deep inside themselves to the core of their essence, their reasons for being, and the necessity of checking inside their boots every morning for fatal surprises. They also picked up the most finely tuned sense of irony in the world, and the Aboriginal gift for making up stories. Be warned.

There is also the matter of the beaches. Australian beaches are simply the nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually venturing into the sea will have to contend with sharks, stinging jellyfish, stonefish (a fish which sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be a rock and has venomous barbs sticking out of its back that will kill just from the pain) and surfboarders. However, watching a beach sunset is worth the risk.

TIPS TO SURVIVING AUSTRALIA Don't ever put your hand down a hole for any reason WHATSOEVER.

The beer is stronger than you think, regardless of how strong you think it is. Always carry a stick.

Air-conditioning is imperative.

Do not attempt to use Australian slang unless you are a trained linguist and extremely good in a fist fight. Wear thick socks.

Take good maps. Stopping to ask directions only works when there are people nearby

If you leave the urban areas, carry several litres of water with you at all times, or you will die. And don't forget a stick. Even in the most embellished stories told by Australians, there is always a core of truth that it is unwise to ignore. HOW TO IDENTIFY AUSTRALIANS

They waddle when they walk due to the 53 expired petrol discount vouchers stuffed in their wallet or purse. They pronounce Melbourne as "Melbin".

They think it makes perfect sense to decorate highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep etc.

They think "Woolloomooloo" is a perfectly reasonable name for a place, that "Wagga Wagga" can be abbreviated to "Wagga", but "Woy Woy" can't be called "Woy". Their hamburgers will contain beetroot. Apparently it's a must-have. They don't think it's summer until the steering wheel is too hot to handle. They believe that all train timetables are works of fiction. And they all carry a stick and say "have a good day mate "

As a result of all this hardship, dirt, thirst and wombats, you would expect Australians to be a dour lot. Instead, they are genial, jolly, cheerful and always willing to share a kind word with a stranger. Faced with insurmountable odds and impossible problems, they smile disarmingly and look for a stick. Major engineering feats have been performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string and mud. Alone of all the races on earth, they seem to be free from the 'Grass is greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome, and roundly proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the other side of that fence. They call the land "Oz" or "Godzone" (a verbal contraction of "God's Own Country").

THE IRRITATING THING ABOUT THIS IS THEY MAY BE RIGHT.
