Does your old sand filled synthetic bowling green not drain like it used to?? KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have the solution. KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass now have a custom-made solution for your drainage woes. The OPM is a one day per green rectification process with minimal green downtime.

The Problem: Overtime, algae, pollution, degraded yarn and other substances find their way into the drainage holes of the synthetic grass. This causes a gradual reduction in the drainage performance of your green. As these particles have found their way to the very base of the synthetic grass, it’s very difficult to access the area to remove them. The Solution: Our process creates new clear holes in the surface with no impact on the bowling performance of your green. The new perforations are done in a similar configuration to the original factory perforations, with the advantage that new holes are introduced in the seam area (which is not originally perforated at the factory to prevent adhesive coming through to the surface during installation). Not only will this solve your drainage problems, it may extend the life of your green by several years. The Machine: Our custom-built machine runs 6 high-speed routers and is selfpropelled to ensure a consistent spacing of perforations.

For more information go to www.kclsport.com.au and, from the Services page, you can see a short video of the OPM in action.

I WAS AT THE CLUB YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN WE HAD A DOWNPOUR OF ABOUT 15MM IN 30 MINUTES. I AM SURE YOU WILL BE AS DELIGHTED AS WE ARE THAT GREENS 1 & 2 WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY PLAYABLE WITHIN 10-15 MINUTES OF THE RAIN CEASING. ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD AND MEMBERS OF NORTH BALWYN BC OUR CONGRATULATIONS AND SINCERE THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL RESULT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED WITH YOUR UNIQUE MACHINE. WE ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATE THE PERSONAL ATTENTION YOU HAVE GIVEN OUR CLUB TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM – HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL INDEED. Kind regards, Charles Green, Secretary North Balwyn Bowls Club

Golden Compass Tours Once a year, the Dalai Lama advises in his instructions for life, “go someplace you’ve never been before.” Golden Compass Tours loves this sentiment – but why just once a year? You’ll ask yourself the same thing when you look inside their exciting range of 2019 tours. Whether you marvel at the rugged beauty of Scotland’s landscape, explore the remote areas of Central Asia, immerse yourself in the culture and history of Europe, Golden Compass Tours provides the opportunity to discover and learn with like-minded travellers from Australia and New Zealand.

Since Golden Compass’ inception in 1995, their tours have been carefully developed for educational emphasis and designed to satisfy the expectations of their participants. The team at Golden Compass have planned these programs expressly with Australian and New Zealand travellers in mind, and they are sure you will relish reading about them in their new 2019 brochure, as much as they have taken pleasure in crafting them for your enjoyment. Highlights of our 2019 calendar include old favourites in France, Italy, Ireland and Scotland, as well as the more exotic regions of

Eastern Europe, the Adriatic and Iran, not to mention ever popular Central Asia, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Norfolk Island, Outback South Australia and Western Australia Wildflowers and Heritage. Golden Compass Tours are especially delighted to introduce new adventures for 2019 to the Caucasus countries of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, Korea (both North and South!), Mongolia and Russia, Morocco and southern Spain and, closer to home, Red Centre Discovery.

When you explore with Golden Compass Tours, you’ll see and experience much more in their tours. Their groups average in size of between 12 and 18 participants, but are rarely more than 20. This means they take you to places the big tour groups miss or don’t even know about. As a leader in small group educational travel, Golden Compass Tours continue to offer the Golden Comp ass best value for money travel experience. Tours So why not take the Dalai Lama’s advice and go someplace you’ve never been before in 2019? Better still, go to several places. There’s a big world out there waiting to be explored with Golden Compass Tours.

BOWLS RETURNS TO SBS AND FOX SPORTS IN 2019 The sport of bowls will enjoy increased television coverage in 2019, with Bowls Australia (BA) today announcing an extension of its broadcast partnership with pay-tv partner Fox Sports Australia and free-to-air partner SBS for 2019.

A number of the sport’s coveted premier events will return to Australis’s television screens this year, along with the inaugural World Bowls Challenge, which will debut in November from the Moama Bowling Club in NSW.

Among the programs returning in 2019 is a fourth season of The Bowls Show, with 20 episodes broadcast nationwide from 3.00pm on SBS every Sunday from May 26, and also shown on Fox Sports.

For the second year in a row, the nation’s most prestigious and richest open title, the Australian Open, will be simulcast live on SBS and Fox Sports, with the blue-ribbon men’s and women’s singles and pairs finals to feature on June 13 and 14 from 11.30am until 4.00pm nationwide. The beloved BPL competition will again be showcased exclusively on Fox Sports with 20 hours of live coverage of the night sessions, including finals, of the tenth instalment of the Bowls Premier League (BPL10) from Queensland’s Club Pine Rivers in November.

The World Bowls Challenge, announced jointly in January by World Bowls and Bowls Australia, will feature Australia v Rest of the World in an exciting ten-a-side format played from November 29-30, with the action from both nights broadcast live on Fox Sports. Jack Heverin will return to the hosting role of The Bowls Show, in addition to anchoring the commentary of events alongside the sport’s biggest personalities, with highlights of events to feature in the program to include the BPL09, Australian Open and Australian Indoor Championships.

Key details: The Bowls Show – Season 4 20 weeks from May 26 to October 6 Sundays at 3.00pm on SBS

Viewers who miss an episode of The Bowls Show or any of the Australian Open finals action will be able to catch-up via the SBS On Demand platform or on Fox Sports. Bowls Australia Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple said the continuation of the partnership with Fox Sports and SBS was a great result for the sport.

“Fox Sports and SBS have been terrific partners for the sport and we are delighted to continue our broadcast relationship in promoting the sport of bowls to the masses,” he said.

BOWLING GREEN DESIGN Construction and Surfacing

“To continue to have a free-to-air presence for the sport of bowls is vindication of its appeal within Australia and the high-quality of our competitions and athletes. “Bowls is very much part of the social fabric of Australia, with in excess of 650,000 regular participants in the sport annually, so we’ve worked hard to ensure that everyone continues to have the ability to watch and enjoy the sport on television.

“I encourage the entire bowls community to promote and watch these programs on Fox Sports and SBS to ensure bowls continues to remain at the forefront of sports broadcasting in the future.”

From our Australian family farm, Karma Rub (KR) is taken from the ground and is bottled as it comes to us, just as nature intended. In a sense Karma Rub is a concentrated pure Australian mineral springs liquid however, because it is so concentrated you don’t have to sit in the springs to be rejuvenated, four drops is enough to cover both hands. We call it a liquid magnesium as it has a high percentage of magnesium within it and many trace elements including zinc, iron, copper, & calcium that are excellent for the human condition.

Karma Rub is a 100% Australian owned product that may assist with muscle recovery, repair and relaxation and improve your body’s mineral health…and oh so much more!

We are a family run business that totally believes in the many benefits of Karma Rub. When we discovered the natural resource on our family lands, we tested the product to find out what it was and when the analysis stated it was full of naturally occurring magnesium and complimentary minerals, we started trying it out on family and friends. Word of mouth spread about how great Karma Rub was for all sorts of conditions and Karma Rub is what it is today. Karma Rub is literally, "A liquid magnesium for the skin that just keeps on giving".

You need to keep your eye on the ball to stay ahead of your game, so why wouldn’t you do the same to stay ahead with your health? Oral7 takes this approach: Be aware of the importance of your oral health. Did you know that the health of your mouth and the bacteria in it, can directly affect the rest of your body?

Researchers have found types of bacteria in your mouth have been linked to: • gum disease • cancer

• heart disease • stroke

• dementia • diabetes

“Your mouth normally hosts a diverse and relatively stable community of bacteria, but

when dental plaque builds under the edge of your gums, it can form inflamed pockets in which P. gingivalis can thrive and release toxins.” When you are enjoying yourself out on the green or in the club, being aware of symptoms, their consequences, and educated on your actions will keep you in the game longer. Be aware of:

• Bad breath

• Dry mouth

• Sensitive teeth

• Swollen or bleeding gums

All are signs that bad bacteria are flourishing in your mouth, and maybe elsewhere. Get it under control by adopting good habits and utilising products that help boost the natural enzymes and oral flora in your mouth.

Healthy Travelling

The Health Benefits of Taking a Holiday: Getting Away and Recharging the Batteries Some people are always ready to take off and travel to “get away.” Other people get so much into their regular lives that they seldom even consider taking a holiday and going somewhere else for a while. However, many people keep busy with regular routines, but they know the benefits of taking a holiday where they go and spend some time in a different place. Like batteries that are rechargeable, people need the recharging of a change, and travel can provide that needed power-up. A holiday is a valuable experience for relocating your mojo. If you are tired and run down, a holiday is just the tonic. Learn the health benefits of taking a holiday and start planning your next vacation.

The Emotional Benefits of Taking a Holiday Breaking Out of the Routine This is probably one of the most important benefits of taking a holiday. Why do many people need to take a holiday? It’s mainly because they are so stuck in a rut. They wake up early, get dressed, commute, work a nine hour day, go home, eat dinner, watch some tv and go to bed. They do this five days in a row and follow it up with two non-descript days. After a while, this takes a toll. You feel flat and you feel uninspired.

Going on vacation is the complete opposite. Every day is a dynamic and varied experience. You are seeing new things and going to new places. A different location for rest and relaxation as well as for stimulating activities that are different from the norm is often the best reason for getting away. People on holiday can take part in activities that are completely new and unlike things done every day at home like sky diving, sleeping in late and letting someone else do the cooking. A few familiar things to do in the holiday spot are also enjoyable like golfing, walking and cycling.

One of the great things about a vacation is making the most of every hour in the day. Instead of spending time at the bus stop waiting for a bus and then being stuck in traffic, you can be busy doing stuff and seeing things. You are constantly being stimulated and that is a great feeling. Even if you aren’t doing anything and just chilling on a beach or by a pool, it’s great to be able to do this without any stress or worries. 14

Meeting New People When one talks about health benefits of taking a holiday, one shouldn’t just be talking about the health of the body but mental health as well. Sometimes people find their life is in a funk and they feel depressed or miserable. Sometimes the best way to deal with this is to get away and go on holiday. This could especially be the case if one is depressed from breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend.

Lonely people are sometimes depressed and going out and meeting new people and making new friends definitely makes people feel better about themselves. There is no doubt that having more human interaction and contact is healthier for your self-esteem. When you return from holiday you can keep in touch with these new friends and it inspires you to go on more vacations so you can visit them. Improved Mood One of the important benefits of taking a holiday is improved mood. This improved mood is important because it makes people realize that their regular life doesn’t have to be so boring and uninspired. They will return to their homes and everyday life and try to instill some of what they had on vacation to it.

What this means is they will make more of an effort to live an active lifestyle whether it’s going to the beach or going for walks. On weekends, instead of staying at home, they may go away and head off to someone they’ve never been to before.

The Physical Health Benefits of Taking a Holiday Lower Blood Pressure As mentioned above you aren’t going to be as stressed and without the necessity of having to wake up early you are going to sleep more and sleep better on holiday. This in turn is going to result in a drop in blood pressure. Weight Loss Instead of sitting behind a desk all day on holiday you are more likely to be out and about doing things. Whether it’s swimming, hiking or walking around museums, people are more active than they normally are. This is why many people lose weight while on vacation. Taking a vacation and enjoying the health benefits of taking a holiday is a nicer way to live life and the power of a positive outlook does wonders. Source: The Internet

Escorted Tours Africa

Having recently discovered what I now consider to be the best wildlife viewing operation in the Kruger National Park, I decided to offer my next couple asking for a wildlife experience to remember the opportunity to be the first to try it. I suggested it to Philip & Carole and they were enthusiastic so we locked it in. About 6 months later their day of departure came and they flew off from Brisbane via Johannesburg to Cape Town where we met them at the airport. We transferred them to their hotel and over the next few days they toured the vineyards of Stellenbosch, the Cape peninsula, the city of Cape Town until the final day when they stood atop Table Mountain. So far it had been a fantastic adventure but the best was yet to come! It was back to Cape Town airport for their flight to Hoedspruit in the Kruger National Park. After we transferred them to their accommodation located in a private reserve within the national park, they joined their first game drive. The effect on them was as it is with everyone after their inaugural game drive in the Kruger – unbelievable, life-changing, mindblowing, fantastic – you pick your favourite adjective. It is something that has to be experienced to be understood as words cannot convey the depth of wonder and enjoyment. But still the best was yet to come! During their stay in the reserve, Philip and Carole elected to join 2 excursions, namely The Elephant Whispers experience and the Panorama Route Tour. The Panorama route features a drive along the edge of the Drakensberg Mountains known as the ‘Escarpment’. The viewing is frequently breathtaking featuring locations with names like ‘God’s Window’ and ‘Bourkes Pot Holes’ but the crowning glory is standing on the edge of the Blyde River Canyon. With views across the Kruger National Park and all the way into Mozambique and sheer cliffs in excess of 1000m, this is rugged, wild Africa at one of its most picturesque. Spliced in between was the visit to the Elephant Whispers Experience where they walked along side of these majestic animals. They engaged

with the herd and felt the bond amongst them. But still the best was yet to come.

On the last day of their stay in the reserve, Philip and Carole went on their last game drive in the early morning to squeeze that last moment of adventure. They had seen every animal on their list, including lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, rhino, hippo, giraffe and many more. Today was day without agenda and they would just see where it would take them. And take them it did! They came across a lion kill that had happen very recently and were able to watch the lions feasting. Then, some hyena appeared. Having fed enough and no longer in the mood to defend their kill, the lions opted for retreat leaving a sizable carcass for the hyenas to squabble over. This had been a buffalo and so there was a lot left to fight over. If you have ever observed hyenas before then you will be aware that they make the strange howling noises and are great cowards so they can be very entertaining to watch. One ambitious fellow decided to pull off an entire leg and attempt to abscond with it. However the rest of the pack were having none of that and so pursued him. Trying to run away with this enormous limb was just not going to work and after a brief chase he concluded that he need a place of refuge in which to enjoy his meal. Such a place proved to be beneath the tour vehicle in which Philip and Carole sat! For a period of about 15 minutes hyenas scurried around the vehicle while one hid underneath, howling and barking. The guide held off on starting the vehicle as he did not want to risk injuring the one below. Finally he crawled out from beneath the Land Cruiser and the chaos continued into the bush. This was one of those ‘Africa’ memories that Philip and Carole were lucky enough to encounter. He said ‘It was amazing. Absolutely amazing.’ You never know what the bush will produce but there are many amazing stories like this one. Maybe the next one will be yours.

Reduce your risk of dementia Almost one in 10 Australians aged over 65 have dementia, but by 85, it is one in three. It was once thought dementia was a late-life disease that couldn’t be prevented, but we now know that’s not true. “You really have to be thinking about protecting your brain all through your life. It can be hard to think about being 80 when you are only 50 but creating an ageing well life-plan well ahead of retirement will support you in the years to come,” says Professor Anstey.

Research has shown that there are actions you can take to reduce your risk of dementia, and these need to be incorporated into your healthy living plan as early as possible. Critically, during your 50-60s, you need to be mindful of: 1. Weight and keeping yourself fit 2. Regular exercise like bowls

3. Keeping your blood pressure in a healthy range

Australian scientist Professor Kaarin Anstey leads research on ageing and dementia at NeuRA. Professor Anstey is also Australia’s representative to the World Health Organisation on dementia. “Waiting until your 60s and thinking, ‘I don’t want to get dementia, I’d better look at my risk factors,’ isn’t a great plan,” says Professor Kaarin Anstey.

WILLIAM AND HARRY UNITED DESPITE SPECULATION OF RIVALRY In 1936 the world became aware of the conflict surrounding two major players in The British Royal Family. King Edward V111 was abandoning the throne to marry twice divorced American socialite, Wallis Simpson. While his younger brother George V1 was reluctantly left to rule the kingdom. Unfortunately George, who had spent his entire life living in the shadow of his more charismatic older brother, was totally unprepared for the demands of ruling the country. Resulting in catastrophic conflict between the brothers and The Royal Family, a division the brothers were never able to resolve. Unfortunately King George died a premature death in 1952 aged fifty seven. His grieving widow (The Queen Mother) insisting that her husband’s life had been cut short through stress caused by stepping into his older brother’s shoes. A debacle, she claimed was singlehandedly instigated by Wallis Simpson. The woman she referred to as “that woman’’ was blamed for King George’s untimely death. Fast Forward to 2019 and The Royal Family seem to be going through another challenge, with speculation reaching epidemic proportions regarding the relationship between Princes William and Harry. According to palace insiders, reports are circulating that Prince William is extremely concerned about the constant scandals that seem to surround Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle and her family, and the detrimental effect they are having on The Royal Family. The latest drama being the release of a confidential letter in which Meghan urges her father Thomas Markle to “stop talking to the press’’ and “exploiting’’ her marriage. Both William and Harry are also concerned about how their wives are being portrayed in the media,

fuelling speculation that the two women are rivals and do not see eye to eye. Suggesting that English Rose Kate is feeling threatened by the more outspoken Meghan. Rivalry between members of the royal family is nothing new. It seems to occur in every generation. The Duchess of York, Sarah 24

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Ferguson was recently compelled to write an open letter for Hello Magazine stating that the way Kate and Meghan are being treated by the media, reminded her of how the media tried to portray her and Diana as rivals. Ferguson then added more fuel to the fire by admitting that her relationship with Diana was strained by petty jealousies and misunderstandings and admitted, they stopped speaking after the publication of Sarah’s autobiography. Apparently Diana objected to the way Sarah wrote about her in the book.

Ferguson also confirmed that reports of the long-held animosity between Prince Charles and Prince Andrew were all true. It seems that Prince Andrew’s animosity towards his brother Charles, resulted from Prince Andrew wanting Charles’ position as “king in waiting.’’ Eagle eyed royal watchers were quick to recall, Charles declaring several times in the past “the trouble with my brother Andrew is that he wants to be me’’ which confirms Ferguson’s theory. The royal brothers have also clashed over Andrew’s playboy reputation and his ongoing relationship with ex-wife and human headline Sarah Ferguson, who seems to attract constant scandalous headlines.

(The toe sucking incident with her then boyfriend Johnny Bryan caused outrage among royalists, and is still an obstacle she has yet to overcome) Sibling rivalry takes place in most families, and The Royal Family have certainly had their share over the years. They have also been forced to endure many tragedies causing vulnerability and grief beyond their control. The loss of Diana, Princess of Wales affected the mental health of both William and Harry, a subject they were brave enough to speak openly about.

We will never know what goes on behind the closed doors of Kensington Palace. However we hope that the current “FAB FOUR’’ William, Harry, Meghan and Kate can conquer their differences and continue following protocol and achieve great results for their country and their charity work. They are an inspiration to us all.

#BPL09: ILLAWARRA GORILLAS #WARILLAWORLDCUP: KELLY CLINCH FIRST BOWLS PREMIER & EDWARDS CROWNED LEAGUE TROPHY WORLD CHAMPIONS The Illawarra Gorillas have secured the Bowls Premier League trophy for the very first time, after defeating the Brisbane Pirates in a tense tie-break finish. In what was only the second ever final to go a decider (previous was BPL03), the Kay Moran, Jeremy Henry and Aaron Teys-lead Gorillas pipped the Pirates at the death.

It was the Pirates third successive after taking out BPL08 on their home turf in Club Pine Rivers last time around, and despite some MVP Alex Marshall magic, they couldn’t repeat their heroics.

The Pirates began their night with victory over local rivals the Gold Coast Hawks in the Elimination Final, while the Gorillas pipped the Roys in the Semi Final in what was their first of two tie-break victories for the night.

Unfortunately for the Roys, they would go out in straight sets to the Pirates, the same team who knocked them out at the Preliminary Final stage last time out. Elimination Final – Brisbane Pirates def. Gold Coast Hawks 6-3 2-8 1-0 Semi Final – Illawarra Gorillas def. Melbourne Roys 5-4 7-9 0-1 Preliminary Final – Brisbane Pirates def. Stay tuned to the Bowls Australia Facebook page for the Rinkside Live – live streaming of the 2019 #WarillaWorldCup semi finals and final, from March 12-13.

Northern Ireland international Gary Kelly and New Zealand stalwart Jo Edwards have been crowned 2019 World Cup indoor singles champions following dominant performances at the Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club.

Kelly triumphed in straight sets over Malta’s Brendan Aquilina, while Edwards claimed a record-equalling (with Jeremy Henry) sixth title. Having recently moved to Australia calling Warilla home, Kelly went through the entire event without defeat, having dropped just one set in 11 sectional rounds and the semi-final.

EARLIER IN THE DAY, IT WAS AQUILINA WHO ENDED HOPES OF A SEVENTH TITLE FROM RESIDENT CARPET SPECIALIST HENRY, WITH A STRAIGHT SETS SEMI-FINAL WIN.

Edwards, the reigning Commonwealth Games singles gold medalist, reaffirmed her mantle as arguably the most successful female competitor in world bowls when she claimed the women’s title. The rangy Kiwi defeated Guernsey pocket-rocket and defending champion Lucy Beere in straight sets, a repeat match-up of the 2017 final and 2018 semi-final. Congratulations to BCiB Australian Jackaroo Rebecca Van Asch on securing a bronze medal in her first tournament back following the birth of her child. #WarillaWorldCup

New

manager at Active Bowls

Customers at Active Bowls, the bowls shop based at Cabramatta Bowls Club, can expect to see a new but possibly familiar face welcoming them on their next visit to the store. NSW State representative and Cabramatta bowler, Carl Healey, has taken over the reins as Store Manager at the premier bowls shop, after staff farewelled Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, David Holt, who had been at the helm for over 7 years. Carl will be a well-known face to many as a regular bowler at Cabramatta and round the greens in NSW throughout the years as he’s forged himself a successful bowling career.

NSW Bowler of the Year in 2012 and in 2018 joined the Australian Emerging Jackaroo squad.

After 14 years as a greenkeeper and working in bowls clubs, a move into retail management is a career change for Carl and one that he’s very excited about. “I’ve always enjoyed talking to people about bowls, sharing experiences, whether they be mine or the customers.” “It is a position where I know I can help people find the right set of bowls to be the best players they can be. I always enjoy seeing or hearing about a customer playing well or their latest win. I have a passion for the sport and I feel in this position that I can help improve it.”

Born and raised in the city of Penrith, Carl was first introduced to bowls at Penrith Bowling Club on Australia Day in 2000 at the age of 12. “They had a big coaching group and one of the old coaches there took me under his wing. I had 6 weeks of rolling jacks before I put a bowl down….” He said.

Carl hopes to combine his bowls expertise, knowledge of greens and passion for service into a great experience for his Active Bowls customers. “Customers coming in to the store can expect to feel welcome and receive professional advice about everything bowls. My experiences with different brands of bowls over the years, my experience of bowls at a high level and also my knowledge of bowling greens, will assist a customer to better understand the line of their bowls.”

And achieve he has, representing NSW in over 100 games, winning 8 State tiles, 3 Australian titles and 5 Grand Prix titles – all with the great mates he has met through the sport. Carl was named

Carl was involved in a variety of sports but soon discovered that Lawn Bowls was the one he wanted to pursue. “I was a top ten pin bowler and had a passion for golf. I found lawn bowls was the perfect combination. I picked the game up quite easily and Penrith Bowling Club were very supportive with helping me achieve.”

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. However as a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, AdiposeDerived Stem Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the stem cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

Retirement & Wellbeing

How do you know

when and how to Retire?

Deciding how and when to retire is one of the biggest decisions of our lives. What does retirement look like for you? Do you have a plan for exploring new interests and learning new skills, catching up with old friends and making new ones, or travel?

These are big considerations so it’s important to start planning early – research shows those who start planning at least two years before the big day have a happier retirement. A large part of this decision is choosing where you would like to live. Will you stay in the family home or downsize to a retirement village?

We gathered insights from retirees suggesting you take the following factors into account when you weigh up your options.

Lifestyle: What lifestyle do you want in retirement? Do you imagine a community connected through shared facilities and social activities or isolation? Andrew Plant at The Village Yeronga describes, “The lifestyle here is just fantastic, you don’t have to drive to the gym, so there’s no excuse, and its open 24 hours a day. The heated swimming pool is open 24 hours a day and your grandchildren can do laps with you”. To get a feel for the lifestyle attend a resident’s expo day and talk to retirees that live in a village.

Maintenance: Do you want to renovate your family home or live somewhere smaller where there is less maintenance? Downsizing gives you time to follow your interests and hobbies or travel instead of mowing lawns and upkeep of a large home. With less daily chores you have more time to relax and do what you enjoy. Location: Our retirees unanimously advised “Location, location, location” search for the right location; do you want to be closer to family, near the big hospitals, near parklands or stay in the community you love? Consider where additional care if needed in the future is located, ideally it will be very close to your independent living.

Social: Would you like easy access to fellowship and friendships through social events, happy hours, choir, craft, cards, and many more activities? Leslie Turner juggles gym, aqua

32

aerobics, yoga and tai chi classes every week, as well as regular mah-jong games, along with trips to the theatre and catching up with lifelong friends outside The Village Redcliffe. Financial: Downsizing to a village can give your finances a boost and free up your money for travel, topping up your super or a new car. Look for retirement villages that price their homes affordable and who defer their profit until you sell. Beware of parks who charge you their profit upfront in the purchase price. Villages that defer their profit have a vested interest in keeping the village as great as it looks now.

Ongoing fees: How do you protect yourself against unknown fees? State Government legislation protects you in retirement villages against fees being changed without your knowledge. Beware of retirement communities that do not offer you legislative protection against rising fees. Facilities: Do you want to feel you are on a holiday all year? “It’s not a retirement village it’s a resort,” describes Ann Warren at The Village Yeronga.

“Living at The Village is just like a holiday. We’re that busy - we go to the gym, play bowls, play darts, and go on bus trips. I’ve got to have a diary to make time to go fishing! It’s shocking, I tell you!” laughs Ron Hobman. Family: How do you involve your family? What will the family think? “Our son and daughter think moving into The Village is the

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

best thing to happen to us. They think we’re so much more alive now, and are really enjoying our life more,’’ laughs Ron, who used to work in paint manufacturing and selling truck accessories.

Safety: Would you like to lock up and travel? A community where everyone looks out for each other and you can lock up and go away knowing your home is safe and secure is what most retirees are searching for. Leslie at The Village Redcliffe explains, “You have neighbours close by who care about you and your home”. Community: Do you want to downsize to a block of units or be part of a community? A Harvard study found people who are socially connected to family, friends, and community are happier, physically healthier and live longer than those who are not as well connected. “A block of units has nothing and you don’t know who is in the flat next to you," Andrew from The Village Yeronga continued. In the village, you will know everyone is a similar age and is an owner just like you. Ultimately, retirement is a personal decision. Take your time, do lots of research, tour villages to discover your options, meet people who live in a village and ask the salesperson all of your questions until you know what retirement looks like for you. The rest of your life depends on it. For further information go to www.thevillage.com.au

THE SPECTACULAR RISE AND FALL OF

Julie Bishop In an interview with Western Australia’s “The Sunday Times, Julie Bishop has recently declared, she would have beaten Bill Shorten in the up-coming May federal election had her colleagues made her Prime Minister in last year’s leadership challenge. The leadership challenge that Julie Bishop is referring to, took place on the 24th August, 2018. It was labelled by some journalists and political experts as a “blood bath’’ and “open war-fare’’ between senior members of the liberal party. The challenge was instigated by former home affairs Minister Peter Dutton, and brought the liberal party to a grinding halt, which resulted in the dethroning of then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. On that fateful day, Julie Bishop was confident she had the support and commitment of at least 28 colleagues. Unfortunately she only received a total of eleven votes, which resulted in her demise in the first round. Eventually, Scott Morrison defeated Peter Dutton 45 votes to 40 votes resulting in Scott Morrison being declared prime minister of Australia. Ms Bishop has now directly accused fellow liberal MP and former friend Christopher Pyne of a “behind-thescenes’’ plot to persuade colleagues to switch their votes away from her.

HOWEVER, POLITICAL COMMENTATOR PETA CREDLIN, ALONG WITH FORMER LABOR SENATOR GRAHAM RICHARDSON HAVE NOW ADDED TO THE POLITICAL DEBACLE WITH CREDLIN DECLARING “SHE WOULD HAVE NO HOPE IN HELL OF BEATING LABOR IF SHE CAN’T EVEN GAIN THE SUPPORT OF HER OWN PARTY.’’ Unfortunately many Australian’s agree with the prognosis given by both Peta Credlin and Graham Richardson, with many believing that the 24th August, 2018 was actually the day that Julie Bishop’s fate was sealed regarding her future in politics. Ms Bishop has since sensationally announced her retirement from politics, ending widespread media speculation that she could have ultimately secured a place in Australian Political history by potentially becoming Australia’s second female Prime minister.

Time will tell whether Ms Bishop’s statement regarding the defeat of Bill Shorten has any credibility or whether she is simply suffering from a severe case of “sour grapes.’’ She has since added that she is “excited about the future’’ and also indicated that she has had a number of very attractive offers for a post-political life. It is unfortunate that so many political careers seem to come to an

36

abrupt and unexpected end.

Ms Bishop’s career like many before her, overflowed with enormous potential. She graduated from The University of Adelaide with “A Bachelor of Law Degree’’ in 1978 and worked as a commercial lawyer in Perth W.A. prior to entering politics. She first was elected as a member of parliament for the blue-ribbon seat of Curtin in Perth’s Western suburbs in 1998. In the years that followed she achieved great results as minister for Foreign Affairs and then as the first woman to be elected as deputy leader of The Liberal Party from 2007 to 2018.

Bishop was married to property developer Neil Gillon from 1983 to 1988. Her current partner since 2014,

is winemaker/property developer David Panton. The couple recently attracted controversy and media criticism for using over $32,000 of family travel public funding for Panton since 2015. A claim Bishop insists was within the rules. Over the years there have been different scenarios offered by the media as to why Bishop chose to remain childless. In response to the overwhelming Media curiosity, Bishop declares. “I’m not having kids, however I am incredibly lucky that I’ve had the kind of career that is so consuming, that I don’t feel I have a void in my life.’’ Bishop’s career is now in the lap of the god’s however

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has the last word declaring. “I thank Julie for her loyalty and friendship over many years, but especially as my deputy. She has been and remains and inspiring role model for women here and around the world.’’ Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

WHO IS

JULIAN ASSANGE AND WHY DID AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON’S COMMENTS ABOUT PAMELA ANDERSON DIVIDE A NATION AND PROMPT PINK FLOYD LEGEND ROGER WATERS TO DECLARE ASSANGE A HERO? Pamela Anderson has recently targeted Prime Minister Scott Morrison in an open letter accusing him of having “trivialised and laughed about the suffering of an Australian and his family.’’ The Australian at the centre of this controversy is of course, computer programmer and founder of Wikileaks Website, Julian Assange. Hollywood actress Pamela Anderson seems to have taken her current role as an activist to the next level, with her alleged relationship with “her friend’’ Julian Assange dominating her personal agenda. The former Baywatch star has called on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to support Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. In an open letter, Anderson asked Mr Morrison to “defend your friend and get Julian his passport back and take him back to Australia and be proud of him and throw him a parade when he gets home.’’ Unfortunately her plea fell on deaf ears, and the war of words between Pamela Anderson and The Prime minister quickly accelerated to mammoth proportions, when The Prime Minister replied “No.’’ “I’ve had plenty of mates who have asked me if they can be my special envoy to sort the issue with Pamela Anderson.’’ Unfortunately The Prime Minister’s smutty remarks were met with disbelieve and anger from the actress and several organisations around the globe. Prompting various groups to demand a public apology and a retraction from the Prime Minister. This development has significantly divided the nation, with many believing that The Prime Minister is now suffering from a severe case of Trumpism. Assange and Wikileaks came to international attention in 2010, when the website published a series of leaks provided by US Army Intelligence Analyst Bradley Manning (AKA) Chelsea Manning.

Manning who was serving in Iraq at the time, was privy to classified information. He provided the website with classified documents in what was believed to be the largest unauthorized release of state secrets in US history, which resulted in the compromising of national security. Manning after serving in Iraq since 2009, was arrested and ultimately charged with 22 specified offenses

including communicating National Defence information to an unauthorized source. He was sentenced to 35 years imprisonment. However, in January 2017 President Obama reduced Manning’s sentence to a total of 7 years. He was released in May 2017. Australian Julian Assange founded The Wikileaks Website in 2006. He was subsequently propelled into the international spot light as a computer wiz and whistle blower in 2010 when the Wikileaks Website published “The Collateral Murder Video’’ “The Afghanistan Warlogs’’ “The Cablegate’’ and “The Iraq Warlogs’’ all provided by Bradley Manning. Thus, prompting The Federal Government of the US to launch a criminal investigation into Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange. Sweden then followed by issuing an international arrest warrant for Assange involving allegations of sexual assault and rape. Assange has venomously denied these allegations, and has also expressed concern that he fears he would be extradited from Sweden to The United States and prosecuted under “The Espionage Act of 1917.’’ He has since found refuge in The Embassy of Ecuador in London where he still remains to this day. MUSIC LEGEND AND PINK FLOYD CO-FOUNDER ROGER WATERS HAS RECENTLY JOINED A LONG LIST OF JULIAN ASSANGE SUPPORTERS. DECLARING ASSANGE “ A HERO’’ A “NATIONAL AUSTRALIAN TREASURE’’ AND “NOT A CRIMINAL.’’ The outspoken musician caused controversy when he claimed that Julian Assange simply’’ figured out how to provide us with a vehicle that can be used by people with ears in places that the powers that be don’t want them.’’ Julian Assange’s fate is uncertain, however it is not clear what charges await him. In the past The Obama administration concluded that pursuing Assange would be similar to trying to prosecute a news organisation. Only time will tell if The Trump Government will continue to pursue The Wikileaks debacle and whether Julian will face criminal charges. Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON HAS ANNOUNCED THE APPOINTMENT OF ITA BUTTROSE AS ABC (AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION) CHAIR. BRINGING TO AN END MONTHS OF SPECULATION AND UNCERTAINTY WITHIN THE ORGANISATION. HE EMPHASISED THAT MS BUTTROSE WAS THE GOVERNMENT’S PICK, BECAUSE SHE COULD BE TRUSTED TO LEAD THE ABC WITH INTEGRITY AND INDEPENDENCE. Buttrose added, that she was honoured to be invited to lead the organisation and it was “time to get the ABC functioning again.’’

She promised to protect the ABC’s independence and said her first priority would be restoring stability after the controversial departures last year of her predecessor Justin Milne and managing director Michelle Guthrie. Over the years, trail blazer Ita Buttrose has been the subject of many sensational articles praising her credentials as a media power house. However for the next five years she will be steering the ship at the ABC, leading the way with 5,000 employees on board. Her passion for her work is legendary and well documented. She has spent decades at the helm of magazines and newspapers and comes equipped with a world of experience in both journalism and television. Buttrose is the daughter of Charles Buttrose, a former journalist and one time editor of The Daily Mirror in Sydney. Ita claims she knew at an early age that she would be following her father into the world of journalism. After leaving school at fifteen, she started her career at the Packer owned company, Australian Consolidated Press. Initially as a copy girl at The Australian Women’s Weekly, and then progressing to a cadetship at The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph in Sydney. In 1971 with the help and financial input of Kerry Packer, she went on to become the founding editor of the controversial magazine Cleo. The magazine was an instant hit and sold its entire original print in two days. It broke new ground in Australia by featuring the first nude male centrefold ( Jack Thompson) and turned Ita Buttrose into a media sensation.

Ita’s relationship with Kerry Packer however, has always been surrounded by controversy.

In 2007, Nine network producer Gerald Stone claimed in his book “Who Killed Channel 9’’ that Ita and Kerry Packer conducted an intense affair during her time as editor of the magazine Cleo. A claim, Buttrose has always denied. The

38

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

controversy continued in 2011 when Ita and Packer were the subject of telemovie “Paper Giants, the birth of Cleo.’’

Ita is the mother of two children and has been married and divorced twice. She was married to Alastair MacDonald, the father of her children from 1963 to 1976 and to Peter Sawer from 1979 to 1980. She has also been a panellist on Network Ten’s morning show “Studio 10’’ and is a prolific author of ten bestselling books, including her autobiography which was first released in 1998 and updated and rereleased in 2001. Only time will tell if Ita will be able to restore stability back into the ABC. However judging by her previous successes, there is no doubt she will be able to breathe new life into the ABC and steer the network to success once again. Paul Barry, host of “Media Watch’’ said he was heartened by Ms Buttrose’s comments about the ABC’s independence. “I think she could be really good. It’s an inspired choice.’’ Story Courtesy of Catherine Colusso

Einstein's general theory of relativity passed first test at what is now an Australian lawn bowls club toilet

PHOTO: Local historian Robyn Wells was thrilled to find the historical connection to Einstein. Einstein's general theory of relativity is one of humankind's greatest achievements, and the theory passed its first test in what is now part of Broome's lawn bowls club in far north-west Australia.

PHOTO: Before it was the Broome Bowling Club, the buildings were used for the Broome Coastal Radio Station, and for developing the photographs that proved general relativity was correct.

Historian Robyn Wells was delighted to realise her local bowling club had played a fundamental part in such a significant historical moment.

"This building still exists," Ms Wells said.

"It was the radio station and now is the Broome Bowling Club. And is actually the ladies' and gentlemen's toilets."

A major scientific expedition had been mounted in 1922 to photograph an eclipse of the sun at Wallal, 350 kilometres south of Broome.

"I knew just from living here for a long time that the place where I come and have a beer and play a game of pool occasionally used to be the old radio station.

"I did more research and just made absolutely sure this is the building, and it is." Eclipse backed theory Published in 1915, Einstein's general theory of relativity was a revolutionary description of the universe that claimed Sir Isaac Newton was wrong, that gravity was not a force, and that space and time could be bent and stretched.

The photographic plates were brought back to Broome and developed in the radio station building, where they provided conclusive proof that the sun caused space to curve, passing the first test in verifying Einstein's theory.

Going over historical documents from the time, Ms Wells realised the place where observational evidence of general relativity was first gathered is now the Broome Bowling Club.

PHOTO: Winthrop Professor David Blair says every child should be taught how Einstein's general relativity passed its first test in Wallal and Broome. Continued on next page>>

History with Bowls <<Continued from previous page Trying to comprehend Einstein's theory of four dimensional curved spacetime is brain-busting stuff, but University of Western Australia physicist David Blair said it was quickly realised a photograph of an eclipse could provide evidence to back the theory of general relativity. "If you had a look at stars that were a bit near the sun, then the stars ought to be in the wrong position because the starlight will just follow the shape of space," he said. "The shape of space is going to be different near the sun, and so the stars ought to be in the wrong place in the sky."

The first scientific expeditions to take accurate photos of an eclipse were hampered by the end of World War I and difficult conditions in remote locations. By 1922, Einstein was world-famous for his radical theory, but scientists still could not conclusively verify it was true.

"That was when people said, 'We've got to go and find another eclipse that's much better', and that's where Broome comes in," Dr Blair said.

And that is how Wallal, one of the most remote places on Australia's coastline even now, came to the attention of the world's physicists, astronomers, and the public in general. There was not much happening at Wallal in 1922, other than a cattle station, a telegraph station and a solar eclipse that could help verify general relativity. An international expedition travelled first to Tahiti months before the September 21 Wallal eclipse to photograph the position of the stars without the sun in the picture.

PHOTO: German-born Swiss-US physicist Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity replaced Newton's law of gravitation. What are gravitational waves?

The scientists were then received in Sydney to much fanfare, before taking their tons of telescopes and cameras across the overland railway to Fremantle, boarding a ship for Broome and finally smaller sailing boats to Wallal.

Direct evidence of gravitational waves is something that Albert Einstein thought humanity would never manage. But what are they?

PHOTO: Dr Trumpler, part of the US team, observes the sun through the Lick Observatory's 5-foot camera at Wallal. Extraordinary achievement for Australia The Wallal expedition consisted of three international groups and a group from the Perth Observatory, but it was the US team under William Campbell that took the photos.

"William Campbell's expedition was just stunningly successful," Dr Blair said. "It got results that were not beaten for 50 years, and it proved Einstein's theory was right to about 1 per cent accuracy."

Ms Wells said developing the photographs in the dust and heat of Wallal had proved too difficult, so the parties had to make the decision to go back to Broome to develop the plates.

"They arrived in Broome and came to the Broome Coastal Radio Station, and they were given everything they needed to get the perfect photographs," she said. 40

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

It is extraordinary to think that Sir Isaac Newton's theory of gravity was found to be usurped by Einstein's general theory of relativity in a brick and corrugated iron building in the old Australian pearling town of Broome. General relativity also predicted the existence of black holes, dark matter and even the gravitational waves that Dr Blair studies more than a century later. He said Australia's role in establishing observational evidence to back general relativity was one of the nation's great achievements. "I think it matters for Australia," Dr Blair said.

"IT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, AND AUSTRALIANS SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE FACT THAT THEY MADE THAT HAPPEN." Source: Internet

A Day in the Life of Les Taylor

The Versatile Willys Jeep Our first family car when I was 12 was a Willys Jeep Truck. My father, a carpenter, built a camper back that could be bolted on, so we could go on holidays to the Coast. I drove Willys Jeeps at Finschhafen in PNG, survivors from the war, 1962-64, great little vehicles, great memories!!

The Third and Fourth Photos are taken at Bedford, Nth Borneo, with our 9th Division, near the end of the War in the Pacific. many of these Soldiers were Rats of Tobruk or later Reinforcements.

What a vehicle they were – helped enormously to win the War, everywhere they were used. Great to drive also – go anywhere.

At the end of WWII, there hundreds of acres of closely parked jeeps in Britain. Since they would depress the auto industry if sold, they were all bulldozed into the sea. Trucks too. Thousands and thousands of them.

EXPERT TREATMENT FOR FOOT, KNEE and LEG PAIN Our feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most of our daily activities, so its no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can you do about it?

We asked the experts at Foot & Leg Pain Clinics to shed some light on common foot and leg concerns: - Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so its important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal podiatrist to assist.

- Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips. - Even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treatments including Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), prescription orthoses, stress and load management strategies.

- Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it’s important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine.

Foot & Leg Pain Clinics have been the chosen practitioners for some of the Worlds best athletes and thousands of people of all ages suffering foot and leg pain. Clinics are located right across Melbourne, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula. You can contact them on 1300 328 300. Call now for $50 OFF initial consultations.

We realise that we will never be large enough to form government but we do believe that Seniors can have a strong and loud voice in Senate and the Upper Houses of every State.
