Does your old sand filled synthetic bowling green not drain like it used to?? KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have the solution. KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass now have a custom-made solution for your drainage woes. The OPM is a one day per green rectification process with minimal green downtime.

The Problem: Overtime, algae, pollution, degraded yarn and other substances find their way into the drainage holes of the synthetic grass. This causes a gradual reduction in the drainage performance of your green. As these particles have found their way to the very base of the synthetic grass, it’s very difficult to access the area to remove them. The Solution: Our process creates new clear holes in the surface with no impact on the bowling performance of your green. The new perforations are done in a similar configuration to the original factory perforations, with the advantage that new holes are introduced in the seam area (which is not originally perforated at the factory to prevent adhesive coming through to the surface during installation). Not only will this solve your drainage problems, it may extend the life of your green by several years. The Machine: Our custom-built machine runs 6 high-speed routers and is selfpropelled to ensure a consistent spacing of perforations.

For more information go to www.kclsport.com.au and, from the Services page, you can see a short video of the OPM in action.

I WAS AT THE CLUB YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN WE HAD A DOWNPOUR OF ABOUT 15MM IN 30 MINUTES. I AM SURE YOU WILL BE AS DELIGHTED AS WE ARE THAT GREENS 1 & 2 WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY PLAYABLE WITHIN 10-15 MINUTES OF THE RAIN CEASING. ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD AND MEMBERS OF NORTH BALWYN BC OUR CONGRATULATIONS AND SINCERE THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL RESULT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED WITH YOUR UNIQUE MACHINE. WE ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATE THE PERSONAL ATTENTION YOU HAVE GIVEN OUR CLUB TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM – HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL INDEED. Kind regards, Charles Green, Secretary North Balwyn Bowls Club

Ultimate Bowls Championship Putting Bowls On The World Stage In 2018, a small team of people from Australia and New Zealand came together with a vision to grow the sport of Lawn Bowls through creative thinking and a strong spectatorfriendly focus. The Ultimate Bowls Championship promotes the sport of lawn bowls and has developed strategies to engage with bowls enthusiasts and attract new people to the game. To that end, they created the Ultimate Bowls Championship (UBC), a fresh and innovative new event that has drawn comparisons with cricket’s Twenty20 format thanks to its exciting and fast style of competition.

“The UBC has been designed in a way to showcase our fantastic sport to an audience from all parts of the world,” says UBC CEO/ Director, Mark Casey, who is also a former Australian bowls representative. “Lawn Bowls has been my passion since I was a child.

6

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

I have been fortunate to be able to represent Australia over 14 years, and I am looking forward to assisting with the growth of our game around the world. I feel this is exactly what our sport needs.” Casey works closely with the 24 team owners from Australia, New Zealand and Asia, as well as the host venues, broadcast partners and sponsors to ensure the UBC is an ongoing success story. An exciting concept The UBC is an exciting concept with a unique scoring system, significant prize money on offer and a fantastic broadcast package.

“We believe our unique scoring system is entertaining to watch as there is an opportunity for points to be awarded from every bowl that is delivered, which is quite different when you compare this to any other format of our sport,” Casey says.

“Some of the world’s best players took part in our first event in April and they loved having so many opportunities to score points for

their team, instead of waiting until the end of each end. Teams are never out of the contest which makes it fun to play, but also very entertaining to watch.”

The UBC is the world’s largest prize money event for bowls with $500,000 up for grabs. “This gives our sport some fantastic exposure around the world. We have a vision to keep growing our competition so this first year has provided us with an exceptional platform,” he says.

“Lastly, our broadcast package is simply incredible. UBC’s first event was watched by over 1 million viewers across 243 hours. This alone is brilliant for our game. Our first UBC event attracted over 1 million viewers which is just unheard of for our sport, we are over the moon with these figures and we will only grow bigger and better from here.” UBC Player Draft At the start of each year there will be a UBC Player Draft to help finalise each team’s playing roster. As there are three players required for each team, team owners have two entry options of initially selecting one player or two players.

“The Draft created excitement not only for our event, but importantly for our players. There were players going into the night not knowing where they would end up which built tension and drama, something that hasn’t previously been a big part of our sport,” Casey says. Event 1 success The inaugural UBC event, held at the Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club, has been hailed a huge success, with the Dandenong Club team of Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Wayne Turley emerging as champions and taking home $60,000 for their efforts.

“It was a massive milestone for our sport, and it was incredible to see

the players enthralled in the concept,” Casey says. “From my point of view there were so many highlights, the way the players adapted and really bought into our concept was great to see. They put on an outstanding show!”

Running a bowls event of this scale relies heavily on the efforts and commitment of numerous people.

“Another great highlight was our brilliant team of volunteers,” he says. “One of the local high schools provided 20 students to assist with the operating of the scoring tablets. Some of these students had no background knowledge of our sport but went away from the event wanting to try it out for themselves. Those are the good stories we love to hear.” Positive feedback and bright future “The overall feedback has been phenomenal,” claims Casey. “We have received emails from people all over the world wanting to know more about our concept. People love the excitement of our scoring system which is very pleasing.”

Following the first event, organisers have identified some areas to improve and make the upcoming second and third UBC events even bigger and better. “There are certainly a few items that we are introducing for this next event which will only enhance the experience for everyone involved, both at the venue or watching from home on TV.” Get involved Entry to UBC Event 2 at The Deer Park Club is free, so everyone is encouraged to get along and watch the action from 9:30am each day. Finals commence at 5pm on Friday 16 August 2019. For more information visit the Ultimate Bowls Championship website

DANDENONG CLUB POISED TO ENTER THE BPL Dandenong Club will compete for the spoils of the sport’s most revered televised event, after securing a licence to the Bowls Premier League. Following on from a successful tilt at the recent Ultimate Bowls Championships and the unveiling of their newly completed undercover bowls facility, Dandenong Club have stepped up to the BPL in the competition’s tenth staging this November.

In a major coup for the new team, Northern Ireland’s Gary Kelly, 30, has been confirmed as the team’s marquee inaugural signing.

Kelly is arguably one of the most in-form international exponents yet to debut in the BPL and is riding a wave of success after securing the World Cup singles crown earlier this year. Bowls Australia CEO Neil Dalrymple said Dandenong Club was a welcome addition to this coveted competition.

“The Bowls Premier League has established itself as the one of the most prestigious, exciting and innovative bowls events over many years and it’s exciting to welcome Dandenong Club in on the action,” Dalrymple said. Dandenong Club President Charlie Daly said the BPL was an exciting opportunity for the Club to be a part of over the next three years.

“THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR CLUB,” DALY SAID.

“Our Board have been extremely enthusiastic about reinvigorating our bowls operations; we have a wonderful new undercover facility, real growth in participation and membership supported by an enthusiastic staff servicing the bowls program. 8

“We are looking forward to establishing a team that at mixes it with the best players in the country and excited about this three year commitment to be a part of Bowls Australia’s BPL competition.” The announcement confirms Dandenong Club as the BPL’s first new team since Illawarra Gorillas joined BPL06 in 2017, and prior to that, the Moama Bowling Club’s Murray Steamers and Club Helensvale’s Gold Coast Hawks jointly joined the fray at BPL02 in 2014.

Details surrounding Dandenong Club’s team name, colours, uniform and remaining team personnel will be made closer to the staging of the competition.

Further announcements pertaining to the other BPL teams and their player rosters will made in the coming weeks. Since its inception in 2013, the BPL has distributed more than $900,000 in prize-money to the participating teams.

BPL10 will be staged from November 12 to 15 at Queensland’s Club Pine Rivers, with 20 hours of live broadcast coverage on Fox Sports Australia, Kayo Sports and Sky Sport NZ.

From our Australian family farm, Karma Rub (KR) is taken from the ground and is bottled as it comes to us, just as nature intended. In a sense Karma Rub is a concentrated pure Australian mineral springs liquid however, because it is so concentrated you don’t have to sit in the springs to be rejuvenated, four drops is enough to cover both hands. We call it a liquid magnesium as it has a high percentage of magnesium within it and many trace elements including zinc, iron, copper, & calcium that are excellent for the human condition.

Karma Rub is a 100% Australian owned product that may assist with muscle recovery, repair and relaxation and improve your body’s mineral health…and oh so much more!

We are a family run business that totally believes in the many benefits of Karma Rub. When we discovered the natural resource on our family lands, we tested the product to find out what it was and when the analysis stated it was full of naturally occurring magnesium and complimentary minerals, we started trying it out on family and friends. Word of mouth spread about how great Karma Rub was for all sorts of conditions and Karma Rub is what it is today. Karma Rub is literally, "A liquid magnesium for the skin that just keeps on giving".

You need to keep your eye on the ball to stay ahead of your game, so why wouldn’t you do the same to stay ahead with your health? Oral7 takes this approach: Be aware of the importance of your oral health. Did you know that the health of your mouth and the bacteria in it, can directly affect the rest of your body?

Researchers have found types of bacteria in your mouth have been linked to: • gum disease • cancer

• heart disease • stroke

• dementia • diabetes

“Your mouth normally hosts a diverse and relatively stable community of bacteria, but

when dental plaque builds under the edge of your gums, it can form inflamed pockets in which P. gingivalis can thrive and release toxins.” When you are enjoying yourself out on the green or in the club, being aware of symptoms, their consequences, and educated on your actions will keep you in the game longer. Be aware of:

• Bad breath

• Dry mouth

• Sensitive teeth

• Swollen or bleeding gums

All are signs that bad bacteria are flourishing in your mouth, and maybe elsewhere. Get it under control by adopting good habits and utilising products that help boost the natural enzymes and oral flora in your mouth.

JACK ATTACK: BOWLS AUSTRALIA EXPANDING PROGRAM FOLLOWING RECENT FUNDING Boosted by recent funding from the Federal Government, Bowls Australia (BA) is expanding its Jack Attack program, the fun and fast-paced format of the sport which aims to encourage participation with non-bowling members of the community. In April, BA was successful in receiving $250,000 in funding for the program, as part of Sport Australia’s $28.9 million Move It AUS Participation Grant Program. The funding will be used to expand the program to more clubs nationwide, in both

14

metro and regional areas, with a number of added resources and incentives available for both new and existing Jack Attack-licensed clubs.

A once-off $450 Jack Attack license fee (no cost for existing Jack Attack licensed clubs) will give clubs the opportunity to access a trained Jack Attack coordinator (supplied by Bowls Australia) to assist with the running of the program. BA will support clubs in their program promotion and player recruitment with a number of beneficial resources, including hard-copy and digital marketing collateral (videos, social media tiles, press release templates, etc.), scorecards, promotional merchandise and apparel. What is Jack Attack?

from the traditional form of lawn bowls, aimed to encourage participation with non-bowling members of the community. Jack Attack is super easy to play!

It is a modified version from the traditional form of lawn bowls, with three players per team who each deliver their two bowls within an end, aiming to get as close as possible to the jack.

The delivery of all six bowls completes an end, where teams then change the direction of play and re-position the jack. Teams complete two sets of five ends to determine a winner, and should the sets be even, a sudden-death tie-break will be played. It’s all over in 60 minutes!

PUSH FOR MORE VISIONIMPAIRED BOWLERS A WIN-WIN FOR ALL: STEVE GLASSON Following the BCiB Australian Jackaroos recent tour of the UK, Bowls Australia (BA) National Coach Steve Glasson and High Performance team have identified depth in the Vision-Impaired bowling ranks as a priority ahead of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The contingent of 10 open and 8 para-sport (including two Vision-Impaired directors) squad members competed in an average of 34 matches across two weeks of competition against Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, a taxing but rewarding tour for both players and staff.

Speaking on Without Bias on 1116 SEN, Australia’s only dedicated lawn bowls show on commercial radio, Glasson spoke glowingly of the benefits taken from the UK Tour and also reiterated the need to develop depth in the Vision-Impaired discipline.

“It was a seek and discover mission. We’re aiming to do this each year leading up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and we’re very well supported by Commonwealth Games Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport,” he said.

“Whether we can identify some other [Vision-Imapired] players that can throw out a challenge to our current crop to contest for something like a Commonwealth Games and help build that grassroots, but very elite model.

“WE’RE LOOKING VERY CLOSELY AT THAT AT THE MOMENT… WE’RE TRYING TO HELP OUT IN THAT ARM OF THE BOWLS COMMUNITY.”

Glasson also said that a push to help recruit more Vision-Impaired bowlers throughout Australia, whether they are existing bowlers or athletes from other sports, would also be of benefit to the Australian Blind Bowlers Association (ABBA) and wider bowls community.

Australia’s current leading Vision-Impaired pair in Jake Fehlberg (25) and Lynne Seymour (69) have taken the discipline to new heights, securing gold at last year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, while both we recently involved in the Jackaroos tour of the UK.

FUN, SUN, & BOWLS @ THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2019 On my recent visit to the Gold Coast, the newly acclaimed ‘lawn bowls capital of the world’, I took the opportunity to unwind and soak up the festival-like atmosphere of the Australian Open 2019.

Now in its fifth consecutive year on the Gold Coast, the Sunshine State has really embraced this event with thousands of bowlers and spectators flocking from all around Australia and abroad. The lure of $250,000 is a major drawcard, and the true ‘open’ nature of this competition enables anyone to compete for a share in this lucrative prize pool. Monetary appeal aside, the Australian Open is much more about the competition and rivalries, the strategy and skilfulness, the fun and fitness, the festivities and celebration of all things Lawn Bowls. My approach into the Gold Coast was thick with traffic. Cars, buses and trams all bustling about. Parking near the Broadbeach Bowls Club was full, which was a sure sign that many others had descended upon this prestigious annual event. Set adjacent to golden sandy beaches there was a carnivallike atmosphere at the club, with many flags and banners, food and drink options, sunshine and good vibes. The bowls creams of yester-year were scarce. Bright colours, patterns, and prints were all around, boldly displaying teamwear names and logos.

On the green, competition was intense, with waves of silence followed by loud cheers. High five’s, fist pumps, and bear hugs were plentiful. As each round progressed, 16

the seasoned bowlers advanced. Bowls Officials were often called upon to decide the winning shots. Measuring tapes were drawn as some very close games went down to the wire, with only millimetres being the difference.

Rinkside there were plenty of keen spectators, some sizing up the competition for their next draw, others just content to get a glimpse of the talent on display. Many onlookers enjoyed a meal at the recently renovated Broadbeach Bowls Club while gazing through the pristine windows toward all the action outside. Those obscured by the crowds could also watch the live stream on the numerous television screens overhead.

Around the grounds I noticed an abundance of bowls-wear and official merchandise being worn. Much seemed to have been acquired from the huge pavilion which was setup alongside the host club at Broadbeach. A steady stream of enthusiasts kept the exhibitors in the Australian Open Trade Display very busy. Plenty was on offer, from bowls to apparel, and even caravans! I personally worked on the City Club stand and assisted ‘Bowlers Paradise’ during my stay on the Gold Coast. Through this experience I gained a valuable insight into the coveted Australian Open, and the people who attended. One older gentlemen joked that the bowls festival was like “schoolies for pensioners”. Although his comment was not entirely accurate due to a whole new breed of younger people getting into the

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

sport, I embraced the youthful sentiment in his remark. The reason that a multitude of participants and spectators travel to this event is not just about the competition, it is the whole experience. Many relish the social aspect of meeting old friends while often creating new ones. Some enjoy the break away to one of the world’s greatest holiday destinations, while others just want to party and share in all that the Gold Coast has to offer.

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THIS YEAR’S AUSTRALIAN OPEN, IT HAS RECENTLY BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT ANOTHER FIVE YEAR TERM HAS BEEN SECURED, WHICH WILL KEEP THIS TOURNAMENT ON THE GOLD COAST UNTIL AT LEAST 2024. There are so many reasons to attend this wonderful sporting event and it continues to build momentum every year. I plan on venturing back in June 2020 for the next instalment. Perhaps I’ll see you there! As appears in The Last Post magazine www.thelastpostmagazine.com Written by Steve Skeet – C.C.A. Australia Pty Ltd

DISCOVER ST IVES… The of the upper north shore of sydney

jewel in the crown

The genteel suburb of St Ives is considered to be one of the upper North Shores most desirable locations. It was first explored by Governor Arthur Philip in 1788. Since then, the suburb has evolved into an affluent hub of activity that ticks all the appropriate boxes and more.

affectionately known, is virtually a ‘’one stop shopping experience’’ boasting 110 stores which include fashion, food, dinning and an eclectic mix of homeware stores.

Kyle Sandilands.

The popularity of the suburb is also enhanced by the numerous parks, and an abundance of trees and wild life, which is due to its close proximity to the Ku-ring-Gai Chase National park. Residents feel privileged by the sheer desirability of the area and are often reluctant to leave once they become part of the close knit community. Resulting in homes being snapped up immediately once they hit the market. Needless to say, the housing market is thriving in overdrive, with real estate agents reporting increased volumes of foot traffic at open homes, coupled with a surge of inquiries from potential buyers trying to secure homes in the area.

It is only 18 kilometres north of Sydney’s CBD making it a pleasant commute from neighbouring train stations Pymble and Gordon. The unique shopping centre is another appealing aspect on offer, which is regarded as the heart and soul of the suburb.’’ The Village’’ as it is

Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

With an estimated population of over seventeen thousand people, the suburb has also attracted its fair share of famous residents over the years, including Kamahl, Andrew Denton, Paula Duncan, Studio Ten’s Craig Bennett and most recently shock jock St Ives’s eclectic mix of palatial trophy homes, weatherboard bungalows, villas, townhouses and modern units, further validates the suburb as a thriving hot spot. Famous for being family friendly and inviting, the suburb attracts a combination of young families, professionals and retirees.

Former St Ives resident ‘’show biz royalty’’ Kamahl has fond memories of living with his family in the suburb from 1969 to 1979. He recalls ‘’the friendliness of the community’’ with great affection, and coincidently still shops at ‘’The St Ives Shopping Village.’’

Confidence is returning to the market... We are seeing greater numbers through open houses and some excellent recent sales. Although the market is still difficult, experience is priceless when it comes to achieving good results.

TIGER WOODS HAS DONE IT AGAIN. AFTER A TEN YEAR HIATUS, TIGER IS DEFINITELY OUT OF THE WOODS AND ROARING AGAIN. He made a spectacular comeback at Augusta this year, winning his fifth masters and his 15th major, his first in over a decade. Against all odds, at the age of 43, he has made his way back into the winner’s circle and back into the hearts of excited fans across the nation. An amazing triumph considering that only two years ago he told friends ‘’I’m done’’ due to crippling back pain. An elated Woods compared the win to his first triumph two decades ago, where his late father Earl was there with that infamous hug, when he won the Masters by a record margin. ‘’I’ve come full circle’’

‘’I had my dad here in 1997, and now I am a dad, and have my two kids here.’’ The universe now patiently awaits in anticipation, to see if Tiger can now achieve his careerlong quest of surpassing Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors. Eldrick Tont ‘’Tiger Woods’’ was born in 1975 and is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. He was born in Cypress,

20

California to Earl and Kultida ‘’Tida Woods.’’ Earl was a returned Lieutenant Colonel and Vietnam War Veteran of African American heritage and Kultida is of mixed Thai and Chinese ancestry. They met in 1968 when Earl was on a ‘’tour of duty in Thailand. Tiger was a child prodigy, who was introduced to golf before the age of two by his adoring Athletic Father. In 1978, Tiger putted against legendary comedian Bob Hope in a television appearance on The Mike Douglas Show. By the time he was thirteen, he played in ‘’The 1989 Big 1’’ which was his first National Junior Tournament. Woods graduated from Western High School age 18 in 1994 and unsurprisingly was voted ‘’most likely to succeed.’’ He also starred in the schools golf team under the supervision of coach Don Crosby.

Tiger went on to achieve enormous success as a professional golfer, since his record breaking win at ‘’The 1997 Masters.’’

He is credited for drawing the largest TV ratings in golf history, and has accumulated a huge fan following around the world. In 2007, Woods was inducted into ‘’ The California Hall of Fame’’ by the then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

However in 2009, Tiger’s world came crashing down, with the infamous car crash that would change his life forever. The world watched in disbelief as Tiger’s wife Elin Nordegren chased his luxury SUV, smashing the rear windows of the car with one of his golf clubs, which resulted in the SUV ploughing unceremoniously into a tree. The incident marked the beginning of his spectacular fall from grace. Tiger had finally been exposed as a serial adulterer and a sex

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

addict by his wife.

After years of rumours and speculation, it was revealed that he was indeed leading a double life.

In the weeks that followed the ‘’car crash incident’’ he was abandoned by an army of sponsors and more than twenty women joined the spotlight, volunteering graphic details about alleged affairs with him. They included, strippers, porn stars and cocktail waitresses. Elin admitted, that she had experienced years of humiliation and unfaithfulness from Tiger with multiple women. However, after trying to ‘’work on the marriage’’ and failed, filed for divorce which was finalised in 2010, with a rumoured settlement of $100 million.

According to numerous reports Tiger’s current girlfriend Erica Herman was his saviour, after his reputation was shattered in the aftermath of his infamous sex scandals, which subsequently derailed his career. She was also part of his support network, along with his mother, Kultida and his two children, when he made his remarkable sporting comeback and redemption at Augusta. His astounding return from injury has been hailed as one of the greatest comebacks of all time.

President Donald Trump has now indicated that he will be presenting Woods with ‘’The Medal of Freedom’’ which is considered the nation’s highest civilian honour. Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

PRINCE HARRY IS THE NATION’S FAVOURITE ROYAL A recent survey undertaken in Great Britain has revealed the most popular member of The Royal Family, is indeed Prince Harry. An unsurprisingly predictable outcome considering he has inherited many of his late mother’s humanitarian qualities. (The Former Lady Diana Spencer)

The polls indicated that Prince Harry soared to the top with a 77% positive opinion rating. Followed closely by Queen Elizabeth II with a 74% positive opinion rating and Prince William with a 73% positive opinion rating.

Harry is the youngest son of Charles, Prince of Wales and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. (Henry, Charles, Albert, David) AKA Prince Harry was born in 1984 and is sixth in line to the throne.

LIKE HIS MOTHER BEFORE HIM, HARRY IS CHARISMATIC, COMPASSIONATE, WARM AND ACCESSIBLE. HE ALSO POSSESSES THE EMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING NEEDED TO TOUCH PEOPLE’S HEARTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. Historical reports have always indicated that Diana, wanted Harry and his older brother William to have a broad range of life experiences, to acquaint them with the world outside Royal Privilege. Therefore, encouraged visits to diverse venues such as Disney World, Homeless Shelters, Orphanages and Aides Clinics to broaden their understanding of life beyond the palace.

Harry and his brother William led an idealistic life, protected behind castle walls until their parents divorced in 1996. Their mother Diana, then sadly died in a car crash 22

in Paris the following year. The enormous loss of Diana resulted in an extraordinary outpouring of grief for her sons, her family and the world at large. The eyes of the world watched in disbelief, when the then twelve year old Harry, his father, brother, paternal grandfather and maternal uncle, Earle Spencer walked behind his mother’s funeral cortege from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey.

Unfortunately yet understandably, adolescent Harry soon sought refuge in alcohol and bad company, resulting in tabloid press labelling him ‘’rebellious’’ and ‘’a wild child.’’ He was photographed smoking cannabis and partaking in under aged drinking, while wearing a Nazi German Afrika Korps uniform with a Swastika armband. He later issued a public statement apologising for his behaviour, which prompted him to acknowledge in an interview in 2017 that he sought counselling after 2 years of ‘’total chaos’’ while struggling to come to terms with the death of his mother. By 2005 circumstances were dramatically different for the then twenty one year old Harry. He had entered The Royal Military Academy, in Sandhurst and was also conducting a serious relationship with South African beauty Chelsy Davy. The relationship lasted almost five years, however by early 2009, the couple parted ways. In May 2012, the media reported that

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Harry had met and started dating aristocrat Cressida Bonas. Unfortunately by 2014 it was reported that the couple had also parted ways amicably. In November 2016 Kensington Palace confirmed that Harry was in a relationship with Hollywood actress Meghan Markle. They made their first public appearance at the opening ceremony of The Invictus Games in Toronto, in September, 2017. In November, 2017 Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan were engaged. The couple then married at St. George’s Chapel Windsor Castle, on the 19th May, 2018. Australia had the pleasure of hosting The Invictus Games in October, 2018 which were attended by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan. The games were created by Prince Harry to celebrate the unconquered human spirit of our wounded warriors. A cause that is very close to The Prince’s heart. Harry, who has experienced the ravages of war first hand, served in the British army for ten years from 2005 to 2015 rising to the rank of captain and undertaking two tours of Afghanistan. The name Invictus is the Latin word for ‘’unconquered’’ or ‘’undefeated.’’ Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

THE ROYAL FAMILY CELEBRATES AS THEY INTRODUCE THEIR NEWEST

bundle of joy TO THE WORLD.

After weeks of speculation and secrecy, Buckingham Palace confirms that Baby Sussex has finally arrived.

The news of the baby’s birth spread around the world like wild fire, prompting The Royal family to share their joy with wellwishes and millions of dedicated fans around the world.

Prince Charles, who was touring Germany with his wife Camilla at the time, told wellwishes ‘’we couldn’t be more delighted at the news, and we’re looking forward to meeting the baby when we return.’’

Prince William and his wife Catherine said they were ‘’absolutely thrilled’’ at their nephew’s birth.’’ With Prince William jokingly adding,’’ that he was very pleased to be welcoming his brother Harry into the sleep deprivation society.’’

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor arrived at 5.26am Monday morning, the 6th May, 2019.

He was born at Portland Hospital in London, after Meghan, who was a week overdue, was driven to the hospital in secrecy 26

with Harry to avoid the world’s media. The couple’s desire for privacy, consequently resulted in weeks of mystery and secrecy prior to the baby’s late arrival. Prince Harry was at his wife’s side during the birth, along with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, who travelled from LA to Britain to support her daughter. Subsequently, shortly after The Palace statement was released, a beaming Prince Harry, gave his first speech as a dad. Confirming to the world that both mum and baby were doing ‘’incredibly well.’’

The Prince then elaborated by declaring his gratitude to the media crews assembled in Windsor, and praised his wife and women in general by announcing. ‘’Its been the most amazing experience I can ever have possibly imagined.’’ How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.’’ But, we’re both absolutely thrilled, and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing.’’ ‘’So we just wanted to share this with everybody.’’ Baby Sussex is the eighth great-grandchild of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and her husband Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, and seventh in line to the throne.

He is also the first biracial baby to be born into The British Royal Family, and the first member of the family to qualify for both British and American passports. A sure sign, that The Royal Family are trying to keep up with a changing society. On the 8th May, 2019 The Royal couple

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

announced to the world via an Instagram post, that they had named their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor after they introduced him to his besotted great grandparents, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and The Duke of Edinburgh. They then posed for their first photo as a family at St. George’s Hall in Windsor. Harry and Meghan have also indicated that they decided against giving him a title. He will simply be known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Winsor. A strategy which the couple hope, will allow him to enjoy a ‘’normal’’ childhood without the responsibility and expectation that comes with being a Royal Prince.

Harry and Meghan recently moved to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor in preparation for the royal birth. Frogmore Cottage, is a ten bedroom cottage in the grounds of Frogmore house. It was built in 1801 and was gifted to the couple by the Queen. Their new home is surrounded by an abundance of gardens and outdoor space, yet is significantly protected from the outside world. The house and the location are the perfect antidote for a thoroughly modern young family starting a new chapter in their lives with their new baby. Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

THE GREATEST LOVE STORY OF ALL TIME QUEEN ELIZABETH II AND PRINCE PHILIP (DUKE OF EDINBURGH) THE FAIRY TALE THAT ACTUALLY CAME TRUE Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain and Prince Philip of Greece were first introduced in 1934 at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (Philip’s cousin) and Prince George (Duke of Kent) and Elizabeth’s uncle. They then met again five years later at The Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon. The then thirteen year old Elizabeth was visiting the college with her parents and younger sister Margaret. Eighteen year old Phillip just happened to be their sole tour-guide on that memorable day. According to reports circulating in royal circles at the time, ‘’sparks flew’’ between the couple and Elizabeth was instantly smitten. The couple then commenced corresponding through letters. Unfortunately the journey leading to their nuptials in Westminster Abbey was not easy for the couple. They secretly became engaged in 1946 when Elizabeth was only twenty. However King George VI (Elizabeth’s father) had his doubts about Philip’s lack of financial independence, and also considered Philip to be ‘’A bit rough around the edges.’’ Nevertheless by 1947, Phillip had King George’s permission to propose to Princess Elizabeth. Unsurprisingly, the king insisted that a formal engagement be delayed till Elizabeth’s 21st birthday. Philip then had to renounce his birth titles and become a naturalised British subject.

When Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were finally married in November, 1947, Great Britain was still recovering from World War II. The nuptials were met with enormous enthusiasm from Post War Britain and its people. The ceremony was recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio to 200 million people around the globe. Prompting former Prime Minister Winston Churchill to describe the event as a ‘’Flash of colour’’ ‘’on the hard road we have

to travel.’’

More than 70 years later the marriage and fairy tale continues to be the longest marriage by any British Sovereign in history. On their golden anniversary in 1997 The Queen described Prince Philip as ‘’quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years.’’ Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) was born into the Greek and Danish Royal families on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921. He was the nephew of the reigning King of Greece. Unfortunately by the time he was two years old, his uncle had been deposed and his entire family exiled from Greece, forcing them to then settle in Paris. He is the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Philip’s maternal grandfather was Prince Louis of Battenberg, who was also known as Louis Mountbatten. Louis renounced his German titles, became a naturalised British citizen and adopted the surname Mountbatten (an Anglicized version of Battenberg) during the First World War. This was done simply because of the animosity between Great Britain and

Germany. Philip was first educated at an American School‘’ The Elms’’ in Paris, and in 1928 was sent to The United Kingdom to attend Cheam School. He then completed his schooling at prestigious Gordonstoun, before joining The Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon as a cadet.

The Love story and fairy tale between Elizabeth and Philip of course still continues. Philip is now ninety eight and has retired from all royal duties, and the queen continues to be an inspiration with her dedication to her country. Over the years they have remained devoted to each other and have shown the world just how far love can go and what can be achieved. The dedication to each other remains obvious despite the many challengers the couple has endured over the years. According to a royal insider, the royal couple are still enamoured with each other, however insists that Elizabeth wears the crown and Philip wears the pants. They say that he is the power behind the throne, shrewd, steadfast and never-failingly supportive. SStory courtesy of Catherine Colusso

AUSTRALIA IS IN MOURNING AS LABOR LEGEND AND FORMER PRIME MINISTER, BOB HAWKE PASSES AWAY PEACEFULLY AT HIS NORTHBRIDGE HOME ON THE EVE OF THE 2019 AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ELECTION. Bob was a political giant and a national icon, who will be remembered for making major economic and environmental reforms to the Australian landscape. He is credited for modernising the economy, which resulted in an unprecedented period of recession-free economic growth. Robert James Lee Hawke was born on the

9th December, 1929 in Bordertown, South Australia. His father Clem was a minister and his mother Ellie a school teacher. Bob initially attended the academically selective Public High School ‘’The Perth Modern School’’ as a youngster and later graduated from The University of Western Australia. In 1947, eighteen year old Hawke joined The Labor Party, where he was able to pursue his love of all things political. In 1950 he graduated from university with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees, majoring in economics. He then went onto study at University College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar.

Next on the agenda was his 1956 marriage to his childhood sweetheart Hazel Masterton, and their move to Melbourne. Bob was then appointed ACTU advocate, where he played a major role in basic wage decisions which ultimately resulted in, being elected as ACTU president in 1969. By 1973 he was the president of The Labor Party and a board member of

The Reserve Bank. Hawke was then subsequently elected to The House of Representatives as the Labor MP for Wills in Victoria in 1980.

Hawke was sworn in as Australia’s 23rd Prime Minister in 1983, when he led Labor to a landslide victory at the Federal election with a 25 seat majority. He then went on to lead Labor to victory in 1984, 1987 and 1990 making him the most electorally successful Labor leader in Australian political history. During his time as Prime Minister, Hawke also recorded the highest popularity rating in Australian politics, reaching an impressive 75% approval rating. In 1984 Hawke announced that he would be reintroducing ‘’Medicare,’’ a scheme that was inline with the original ‘’Medibank’’ introduced by Gough Whitlam, but partially dismantled by The Fraser Government. ‘’Medicare’’ became Australia’s first affordable 32

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

health insurance and was unanimously embraced by the Australian public. Hawke also introduced ‘’The Superannuation Pension Scheme’’

a world class retirement income system that has significantly improved the finances and lifestyles of millions of Australian workers and retirees. Unfortunately Hawke’s popularity and electoral success did little to enhance his marriage to his first wife Hazel, due to his passion for heavy drinking and womanising. However, he was named ‘’Victorian Father of the year’’ in 1971, an honour which was categorically disputed by his wife Hazel. Hawke went on to have a highly publicised affair with his biographer Blanche D’Alpuget and ultimately divorced Hazel, causing outrage amongst his peers and the Australia public. The couple caused a media frenzy in 1995 when they eventually married. Hawke’s death has resulted in an outpouring of grief from Australians from all walks of life, after news of his death became public, coupled with a deluge of tributes from world leaders. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison praised Mr Hawke as Labor’s best prime minister, a ‘’unifier’’ and a ‘’man of enormous intellectual capacity.’’ He also added that Hawke was ‘’accessible, even beyond politics in his ability to connect with Australians.’’

Former US president Bill Clinton, said he always admired Mr. Hawke’s ‘’progressive record and great sense of humour’’ and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said ‘’it was easy to feel like you knew him ‘’because’’ he was such a charismatic figure and one clearly driven by his love of people.’’

BOB HAWKE WAS HONOURED WITH A STATE MEMORIAL SERVICE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE ON THE 14TH JUNE 2019. Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

A Day in the Life of Les Taylor

This littleknown inventor has probably saved your life On Friday 19 October, 1934, the passenger plane Miss Hobart fell from the sky to the sea. Eight men, three women and a baby boy fell with her, swallowed - it's believed - by the waters of the Bass Strait that lies between Tasmania and mainland Australia. The plane's wreckage was never found.

One of those on board was a 33-year-old Anglican missionary, Rev Hubert Warren, who had been travelling to his new parish in Enfield, Sydney. His wife Ellie and four children had stayed behind, intending to follow by boat.

The reverend's last present to his eight-yearold son, David, had been a crystal radio set

Plane accidents that the boy treasured deeply.

As a boarder at Launceston Boys' Grammar School in Tasmania, David Warren tinkered with the machine after lessons, learning what made it work. He charged friends a penny to listen to cricket matches, and within a few years was selling home-made copies at five shillings each. Young David was charismatic and a wonderful orator - a boy with star quality. His family, who were deeply religious, dreamed he would become an evangelical preacher.

But that was not to be. The gift from Rev Hubert, Man of God, had launched a love affair with Science. It would prove to be of life-saving significance.

By his mid-twenties, David Warren had studied his way to a science degree from the University of Sydney, a diploma in education from Melbourne University and a PhD in chemistry from Imperial College, London. His specialty was rocket science, and he went to work as a researcher for the Aeronautical Research Laboratories (ARL), a part of Australia's Defence Department that focused on planes.

In 1953, the department loaned him to an expert panel trying to solve a costly and distressing mystery: why did the British de Havilland Comet, the world's first commercial jet airliner and the great hope of the new Jet Age, keep crashing? He thought it might be the fuel tanks; but there were dozens of possible causes and nothing but death and debris as evidence. The panel sat down to discuss what they knew.

"PEOPLE WERE RATTLING ON ABOUT STAFF TRAINING AND PILOTS' ERRORS, AND DID A FIN BREAK OFF THE TAIL, AND ALL SORTS OF THINGS THAT I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT," DR WARREN RECALLED MORE THAN 50 YEARS LATER.

FAMILY a schoolboy, David was fascinated by electronics and learned to build his own radio sets AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

A Day in the Life of Les Taylor "I found myself dreaming of something I'd seen the week before at Sydney's first post-war trade fair. And that is - what claimed to be the first pocket recorder, the Miniphon. A German device. There'd been nothing before like it‌"

The Miniphon was marketed as a dictation machine for businessmen, who could sit at their desks (or on trains and planes) recording letters that would later be typed up by their secretaries. David, who loved swing music and played the clarinet, only wanted one so he could make bootleg recordings of the jazz musician Woody Herman. However, when one of his fellow scientists suggested the latest doomed Comet might have been hijacked, something clicked for him.

The chances that a recorder had been on board - and survived the fiery wreck - were basically nil. But what if every plane in the sky had a mini recorder in the cockpit? If it was tough enough, accident investigators would never be this confused again, because they'd have audio right up to the moment of the crash. At the very least, they'd know what the pilots had said and heard. The idea fascinated him. Back at ARL, he rushed to tell his boss about it.

Alas, his superior didn't share his enthusiasm. Dr Warren said he was told: "It's nothing to do with chemistry or fuels. You're a chemist. Give that to the instruments group and get on with blowing up fuel tanks."

The pilots' union responded with fury, branding the recorder a snooping device, and insisted "no plane would take off in Australia with Big Brother listening". That was one of his better reviews.

Australia's civilian aviation authorities declared it had "no immediate significance", and the air force feared it would "yield more expletives than explanations". Dr Warren was tempted to pack it all in.

But his eldest son, Peter, says his father was stubborn, with a non-conformist streak that coloured his whole worldview.

"HE TOOK US SKIING," HE RECALLS, "BUT HE DID THE SKIING IN WASHINGUP GLOVES, BECAUSE HE WASN'T GOING TO PAY $30 FOR A PAIR OF SKI GLOVES. HE WASN'T THE LEAST BIT AFRAID. HE WASN'T GOING TO WAIT AND FOLLOW THE HERD AT ALL." It was in that spirit that Dr Warren took to his garage and assembled his 20-year-old radio parts. He'd decided the only way to overcome his critics' mockery and suspicion was to build a solid prototype. It would be the first ever "black box" flight recorder.

'Talk about it and I'll have to 'Put that lad on the next courier!' sack you' David knew his idea for a cockpit recorder was a good one. Without official support, there was little he could do about it - but he couldn't get it out of his mind. When his boss was promoted, David pitched his invention again. His new superior was intrigued, and so was Dr Laurie Coombes, ARL's chief superintendent. They urged him to keep working on it - but discreetly. Since it wasn't a government-approved venture or a war-winning weapon, it couldn't be seen to take up lab time or money. Dr Warren said the chief superintendent had cautioned him: "If I find you talking to anyone, including me, about this matter, I will have to sack you." It was a sobering thought for a young man with a wife and two children. But his boss's backing extended to sneakily buying one of the precious new dictation recorders, and chalking it up as "an instrument required for the laboratory‌"

Encouraged, Dr Warren wrote up his idea in a report, titled "A Device for Assisting Investigation into Aircraft Accidents", and sent it out across the industry. At ARL in 1958

One day in 1958, when the little flight recorder had been finished and finessed, the lab received an unusual visitor. Dr Coombes, the chief superintendent, was showing round a friend from England. "Dave!" he said, "Tell him what you're doing!"

Dr Warren explained: his world-first prototype used steel wire to store four hours of pilot voices plus instrument readings and automatically erased older records so it was reusable.

There was a pause, then the visitor said: "I say Coombes old chap, that's a damn good idea. Put that lad on the next courier, and we'll show it in London."

The courier was a Hastings transport aircraft, making a run to England. You had to know somebody pretty powerful to get a seat on it. Dr Warren wondered who this man was who was giving away tickets round the world to somebody he'd never met.

The answer was Robert Hardingham (later Sir Robert), the secretary of the British Air Registration Board and a former Air Vice-Marshal in the RAF. In David's words: "He was a hero. And he was a friend of Coombes, and if he gave away a seat, you took it." Children. The eldest, Peter, remembers him flying off to England

A Day in the Life of Les Taylor A few weeks later, Dr Warren was on a plane bound for England - with strict instructions not to tell Australia's Department of Defence what he was really doing there, because "somebody would frown on it".

For more than 50 years, his pioneering work on the black box went almost unacknowledged. Finally in 1999, he was awarded the Australian Institute of Energy Medal, and then in 2002 was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his service to the aviation industry.

In a near-unbelievable irony, the plane lost an engine over the Mediterranean.

Dr Warren recalled: "I said, 'Chaps, we seem to have lost a donk - does anyone want to go back?' But we'd come from Tunisia and it was about 45 degrees overnight. We didn't want to go back to that hellhole." They decided they could make it if they ploughed on.

He recorded the rest of the flight, thinking that even if he died in that limping transport plane, "at least I'd have proved the bastards wrong!"

"BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE DIDN'T PRANG - WE JUST LANDED SAFELY‌" In England, Dr Warren presented "the ARL Flight Memory Unit" to the Royal Aeronautical Establishment and some commercial instrument-makers.

The Brits loved it. The BBC ran TV and radio programmes examining it, and the British civil aviation authority started work to make the device mandatory in civil aircraft. A Middlesex firm, S Davall and Sons, approached ARL about the production rights, and kicked off manufacturing. Though the device started to be called "the black box", the first ones off the line were orange so they'd be easier to find after a crash - and they remain so today.

Peter Warren believes the name dates from a 1958 interview his father gave the BBC.

"RIGHT AT THE END THERE WAS A JOURNALIST WHO REFERRED TO THIS AS A 'BLACK BOX'. IT'S A GENERIC WORD FROM ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING, AND THE NAME STUCK."

So-called "black box" is in fact a strident orange colour

In 1960, Australia became the first country to make cockpit voice recorders mandatory, after an unexplained plane crash in Queensland killed 29 people. The ruling came from a judicial inquiry, and took a further three years to become law. Today, black boxes are fire-proof, oceanproof and encased in steel. And they are compulsory on every commercial flight.

WATCH: What's in a plane's black box?

It's impossible to say how many people owe their lives to data captured in the death throes of a failing plane - to the flaws exposed, and the safety innovations that followed.

'I'm a lucky bastard' David Warren worked at ARL until his retirement in 1983, becoming its principal research scientist. He died on 19 July, 2010, at the age of 85.

Asked why it took so long for him to be recognised, his daughter Jenny observes: "His battle was inertia. He had this huge enquiring mind, scientifically visionary, and could see how it would work - how it would play out. "He was sitting there in 1958, saying 'this device can make this happen.'"

Peter Warren blames "a 1950s colonial mindset which said nothing good could come out of this country, and everything good would get invented in either the UK, or Germany or America".

The historic secrecy surrounding ARL's work, which is now more widely understood, is another likely factor. Dr Warren lived to see Qantas name an Airbus A380 after him in 2008. Jenny Warren says she's been trying to get a seat on it ever since.

But he never saw a penny in royalties from the black box.

He was often asked if he felt hard done by. Peter says his standard response was: "Yes, the government got the results of what I did. But then, they also didn't charge me for the other hundred ideas that didn't work." David's children inherited his sense of humour.

At Peter's urging, Dr Warren's death notice included his personal catchphrase: "I'm a lucky bastard."

At Jenny's request, he was buried in a casket labelled: "Flight Recorder Inventor: Do Not Open." Do they think of their dad when flying?

His daughter replies simply: "Every time." Sourced from the Internet by Les Taylor

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. However as a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, AdiposeDerived Stem Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the stem cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

WOMEN ARE MULTI-TASKING THEIR WAY INTO THE FUTURE

Denise Scott

JOINS A LONG LIST OF MATURE HIGH ACHIEVING WOMEN WHO HAVE COME OF AGE LATER IN LIFE. Proud Australian Denise Scott proves that age has no boundaries when it comes to her life, her attitude and her career.

When most sixty plus mere mortals are thinking about tree changes and retirement. Denise seems to be strategically planning her next project.

Her life as a multi-award winning comedian began over thirty years ago, when she started acting in local television productions. However, she seems to have hit the big time in the last decade. Appearing in high profile shows like “Spicks and Specks,’’ “The Project’’ and as a co-host on Network Ten’s “Studio Ten.’’ These frequent guest appearances have kept her in the public eye, with no hint of a reprieve any time soon. She has also managed to write and release two bestselling books, ’’All That Happened At Number 26’’ and “The Tour’’ which have secured her place in the heart of every Australian. However it is her latest appearance on “Dancing with the Stars’’ that is wowing audiences with her fancy foot work.

MOTHER OF TWO DENISE, IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PROMINENT WOMEN IN TODAY’S SOCIETY THAT IS DEFYING THE AGE BARRIER THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR CENTURIES. NEVER BEFORE HAVE WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE BEEN MORE PROMINENT IN THE WORK FORCE. Women are now enjoying cutting edge careers and a fulfilling family life, without worrying about age discrimination that has plagued previous generations. They are now permanent fixtures in the political arena, the finance industry, the medical profession and the entertainment business.

Gone are the days when women followed the “stay at home barefoot and pregnant’’ culture of yesteryear. Women are no longer happy to play second fiddle to men. Today’s women are experts at multitasking, playing house and fighting their own battles. Ninety two year old Queen Elizabeth the 2nd seems to have achieved the perfect

balance regarding career and family.

There are now a growing number of extraordinary women doing their upmost to bring equality into a sometimes male dominated world. Only recently did we witness TV host Lisa Wilkinson battle a network for equal pay. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave birth to her baby daughter while in the top job. Women like Theresa May, who became the second female Prime Minister of England after Margaret Thatcher has been enjoying a happy marriage to Philip May since 1980. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been married to Joachim Saucer since 1998 and has two adult step sons. Controversial Australian senator and mother of four Pauline Hansen has also managed a flourishing career and home life. While Hollywood actress Jane Fonda, who is eighty and still firing on all four cylinders, is giving men and women half her age a run for their money. All these women have maturity on their side, something that would have been deemed irrelevant and invisible a few generations ago. Yet they have all earnt the respect and admiration of their countrymen and in some cases their much younger male colleagues. Even though on the surface it seems we are currently being bombarded and saturated with thirty something instagram models on social media. The reality is, we also have many high achieving women of all ages, from all walks of life doing extraordinary work.

Multi-tasking women like Denise Scott, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, Liza Wilkinson, Jacinda Ardern, Theresa May, Angela Merkel and Pauline Hanson have all conquered the age barrier and played an important role in today’s society. These women are an inspiration for today’s youth. Story Courtesy of Catherine Colusso
