Aron Sherriff and Kelsey Cottrell created history after claiming respective Australian Indoor Championship titles at Club Tweed in August.
“I got off to a great start, got the first set under the belt, then sort of just digging in, hanging around.” Sherriff was rapt with the title, and said he has his sights set on another singles crown he has yet to conquer.
But as she often does, Cottrell chipped away to retake the lead, winning the final four ends of the first set to take the Smithadvantage.would take the first end of the second set, but the one shot she collected would be her last of the match as Cottrell took Cottrellcontrol.would go on to collect one shot on each of the seven remaining ends to secure her first Indoor crown.
The Victorian entered the match as an underdog, with Sherriff in red hot form. The Broadbeach star staked his claim from the outset, scoring a four on the first end to set the tone for the first set.
He would allow Fisher just three shots in the first set, scoring 10 of his own to take the ascendancy, with all momentum going his way.
Sherriff and Cottrell create history
“It was shot for shot in the first set. She attacked really well and got some awesome results.”
“I’m just riding this wave at the moment, taking everything that comes. I suppose making the most of it, you never know when it’s going to stop,” Cottrell said.
“It went pretty much how I was hoping it would go,” he said after the win.

Teys collected seven straight shots to force a tiebreak, but fell short against a super impressive Sherriff.
In a highly-anticipated contest, Sherriff had to get past Aaron Teys in a thrilling semi final in the morning before advancing to take on Dylan Fisher. He dominated much of the contest, taking out the first set and leading 9-3 with three ends to play in the second set before Teys clawed his way back.
“The last time I made the final I think I was a teenager, from memory I think I lost on an extra end to Karen Murphy. It was a bit of the same kind of final with the master and the apprentice (this year),” she said.
Cottrell continued her season of dominance with an 8-5, 7-1 final victory over Smith. Smith entered one of the biggest contests of her young career with some nerves, but managed to get on top of them from the Shestart.wasable to take it right up to Cottrell from the outset, finding the jack early to lead 5-3 after five ends.
While four players have won the Australian Open/Indoor double (Selby 2008, Casey 2012, Van Eldik 2016, Van Asch 2018), it is the first time a man and a woman have done the double in the same year, after Sherriff and Cottrell were victorious at Broadbeach in June. It was especially meaningful to the Broadbeach stars, who claimed their first indoor titles of their decorated careers.
“I’ve always loved playing on the indoor but it’s always been the one that I’ve kind of forgone because you take on too much sometimes and the calendar gets too ‘chocka block’,” she Cottrellsaid. was full of praise for Smith, who has a bright future ahead of her.

Fisher lifted his game significantly in the second set, taking the contest right up to his opponent. He moved within one shot of forcing a tiebreak, levelling scores at 6-6 with one end to play, but Sherriff once again proved himself at the death to take the win and his first indoor crown.
“It’s amazing. I’ve only got the Australian Champion of Champions singles to go now for all of them (singles crowns). That’s the goal,” he said. “I’m really stoked to have won this.”
The duo laid claim to $6000 prize-money each in the biggest indoor championships to date, with combined fields from 2021 and 2022 qualifiers, with the 2021 event cancelled due to CottrellCOVID.added another title to her outstanding bowls resume, defeating rising star Brianna Smith in the women’s final.
Fisher awaited Sherriff, after qualifying for the final with a semi final win over New Zealander Chris Le Lievre.
IndoorAustralianwithOpen/double
Sherriff flexed his muscles in a dominant display to claim his first Indoor title a Club Tweed.
Cottrell said she was pleased to have added the indoor title to her extensive bowls CV.
The title adds to Cottrell’s season of dominance, having won the 2022 Australian Open singles and fours, Australian Championships pairs, Queensland state singles and mixed pairs as well as being crowned the number one female bowler in the country.

Sean Lues loves our natural world. Inspired as a young boy by wild animals wandering through the family farm in Zimbabwe, he grew up destined to become a safari guide to the great wild places of our beautiful earth. Fast forward and Sean remains fascinated by ecological links and landscapes and the communities around them, building his career leading and managing some of the most highly acclaimed camps in Africa. In 1994 he stood out from the crowd to win the Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association ‘Guide of the Year’ award, later going on to teach and act as examiner himself. In other words, he is an extremely experienced, capable and knowledgeable guide and you can trust him with your life. A dab hand with a camera, Sean’s eye for detail has also seen him win a number of photography prizes. His work has been published in various magazines, as well as in books such as The Wild Heart of Africa by Rolf Baldus, and Kariba Birds. He also spent extended time behind the lens in Belize, commissioned to take photographs for Belizean National Parks.
After 11 years in Tanzania, Sean and his wife moved to call Australia home in 2016. They have two young children and are very much enjoying bringing up a new generation of world explorers. In fact, Sean has grown particularly passionate about showing all new travellers the places he has loved and seeing them again through fresh eyes. Africa is his specialty and he finds great reward in designing personalised itineraries and tours. For him, it’s the next best thing to being out there when he can’t be out there himself and he loves to trade stories with the many clients who return to Journeys Worldwide again and again.
Going to Africa is incredibly exciting and a real adventure. The abundant wildlife, diverse cultures and stunning scenery creates a magical setting. The early mornings are often announced with beautiful bird calls as dawn approaches and the beginning of another day begins. Being on safari can be action packed watching predators hunt or completely relaxing whilst bird watching and just taking in your surroundings. There is nothing quite like ending your day sitting around a campfire listening to the night-time sounds and the stories of the day. There is so much to explore, let us assist you in creating your perfect African journey. SEAN ManagingLUESDirector

OUR FINAL DAY TOGETHER
Debt-based solutions come in different forms – you may borrow the funds via a reverse mortgage product offered by private providers or take up the loan scheme offered by the Government (previously referred to as the Pension Loan Scheme). The amounts available via a reverse mortgage and the Government loan scheme may be less than via a debt-free strategy and the interest rate charged will be higher than traditional home loan rates, given the nature of the debt.
Which Equity Release solution is right for you?!
Whichever option you may be considering, it is a big decision with lasting ramifications, and it is important that you make the right decision for your circumstances.
10 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
A debt-free option is not a loan, and as you don’t borrow money, there is no capitalising interest charges over time.
Fortunately, there are several ways you can access the wealth accumulated in your home when you need it. The available options generally fall in to two categories –debt-based and debt-free strategies.
Repayments don’t apply, and instead the entitlement of the provider is capped so you can protect a portion of the equity in your home into the future. You can also sell your home at any time, or the provider will receive their entitlement when you pass away, and your home is sold.
With rising living costs and an increasing desire amongst baby boomers to take financial control of their retirement, there is a growing interest in Equity Release products to help fund financial goals.
A debt-based option is a loan product, where you borrow against the equity in your home. Repayments are not required, and instead the interest charged by the provider will be capitalised against the loan over time, adding interest to the loan amount you have borrowed. Such loans are not required to be repaid until you sell your home, or you pass away.
Homesafe Wealth Release® is the popular debt free equity release solution for homeowners to access the wealth in their homes. Homesafe is not a reverse mortgage or a loan product and is specifically designed to provide protections for homeowners for the life of the Forarrangement.over17years, Homesafe (in partnership with Bendigo & Adelaide Bank) has provided a tried and tested solution which has assisted thousands of homeowners by focusing on providing a safe and secure equity release option.

John and Sandra Wanting to avoid debt was the reason John and Sandra* approached Homesafe in March of this year. John had worked as an insurance assessor for many years before being made redundant during covid lockdowns. Given his age he has found it difficult to find another job. Sandra is still working part time to help pay the bills and they feel their levels of financial stress have risen dramatically over the last couple of years. When they saw the Homesafe advertisement on television, they started their own research into what equity release options may be able to assist them. Their home is very important to them, and they want to stay put as long as they can. When they investigated equity release solutions, it became very clear to them that they did not want to replace home loan debt with reverse mortgage debt, so Homesafe was their preferred option. When John and Sandra met with a Homesafe Specialist, in the privacy of their own home, they were pleased to discover they could use the equity in their home when they needed it the most – without the need to downsize just to pay off their debts.
The team at Homesafe offer personalised service by phone initially, and a no-obligation meeting with a Homesafe Mobile Specialist in the comfort of your home is organised to ensure you can receive all the information you – and your family – need to make an informed decision. For more information on how Homesafe^ has helped baby boomers to payout debt for over 17 years, contact Homesafe on 1300 307 059 or visit www.homesafe.com.au.
Homesafe will only receive its share of the sale proceeds, usually many years down the track, when the homeowner chooses to sell or after they pass away.
A special and unique feature of the Homesafe Contract ensures if the homeowner sells earlier than anticipated, due to a unique feature, Homesafe will often receive less than the agreed capped share and the balance is returned to the Homeowner at time of sale.
Many thousands of Homesafe customers have used the amount released with Homesafe to pay out loans, which in turn has removed the stress of being in debt and the freedom of no longer struggling to make loan payments one month to the next.
How can I make an enquiry with Homesafe?
*Actual customer experience with names changed for privacy reasons.
As the popular alternative, the Homesafe option is a part sale property contract, where a homeowner receives a lump sum cash amount today and in return agrees to sell a capped share of the future sale proceeds of the home.

“NEIL DALRYMPLE REVIEW,”IDENTIFIEDANDINTOGUIDEPERFECTUNQUESTIONABLYISTHECANDIDATETOTHESPORTGLOBALLYANEWDIRECTIONDRIVETHEOUTCOMESINTHESTRATEGICCLOUTSAID. 18 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
By Aidan Davis Bowls Australia’s CEO Neil Dalrymple will take the reins of the sport’s global governing body, after being unveiled as the new CEO of World Bowls. Dalrymple was confirmed as the successful candidate for the coveted role following a comprehensive global executive search with a worldwide advertising campaign, and will be charged with steering the sport into a new modern era on the back of a detailed organisational strategic review. Dalrymple is uniquely positioned to deliver the outcomes identified in the review, with a greater focus on commercial and business development functions, having been at the helm of the sport’s largest Member Nation for the more than 15 years, and boasts previous experience as the CEO of Softball Australia and Cricket NT in addition to senior management roles at Cricket Australia.
World Bowls President Darryl Clout, a member of NSW’s Marks Point Bowling Club, said Dalrymple was the standout candidate for the position and his thorough experience in the sport would allow him to hit the ground running in the new role.

World Bowls hails new era with Dalrymple at the helm
While Dalrymple’s focus and attention will shift beyond Australian borders in his new role, his surroundings are unlikely to change much, after World Bowls confirmed in June that it will relocate its headquarters from Scotland to Australian shores, to be co-located with Bowls Australia.
Bowls Australia
Bowls Australia’s President Bob Boorman said Dalrymple had delivered a great deal during his tenure at the national body and was optimistic of the sport’s future at a global level with him at the helm.
19AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
“The sport in this country is indebted to Neil for his contribution across all levels, having overseen record participation and innovation of programs and products, the delivery of numerous marquee international and national events, prolonged success on the international stage and improved funding of high performance pathways, unprecedented broadcast and live-streaming coverage showcasing the equality of the sport, enhanced governance practices and the formation of many strong commercial partnerships among many notable highlights.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the invaluable support provided to me over the past 15 years by the numerous individuals that have held positions among Bowls Australia’s Board and staff, but in particular to President Bob Boorman for his friendship and leadership during his tenure.
“I look forward to a thorough handover process and working closely with all Member Nations once in the role, and more immediately, I look forward to witnessing and showcasing one of the pinnacle events of our sport in the upcoming Commonwealth Games at the end of the month.”
“Once he starts, he’ll be able to make an immediate impact and will help shape the future of the sport at an important Dalrympletime.” said he was honoured to be presented the opportunity to guide the sport globally and was appreciative of the support Bowls Australia’s Board and staff had provided over the past 15 years.
“Neil certainly leaves Bowls Australia and the sport in this country in a much better and healthier position than before he joined and I’m confident that will carry over to a global level in his new role – we wish him the best of luck.”
“NEIL HAS BEEN A TERRIFIC ASSET AND ACHIEVED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AT BOWLS AUSTRALIA, ” BOORMAN SAID.
“We’re fortunate that Neil was excited by the challenges the position presents and confident in the direction that the sport is heading to offer his skillset and experience to the role.
“The opportunity to lead the sport globally and help deliver meaningful change and progression at such an important moment in time for the sport was an enticing prospect and I’m appreciative that World Bowls’ Board have demonstrated their confidence in my ability to deliver these outcomes,” Dalrymple said.
For Krstic, she becomes the first female Commonwealth Games gold medallist from Western Australia, overcoming a barrage of travel restrictions over the past two years and becoming a state hero.
The Goulburn native is also the first Australian to win the women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games, as well as the first player in history to take home the singles and pairs gold at the same event, male or female thanks to her second gold medal with Kristina Krstic in the pairs.
The obvious one, the 25-year-old became the inaugural Australian gold medallist on UK soil, sending the Australian contingent in the crowd into frenzy and reducing some to tears of jubilation.
Ryan and Wilson have joined Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Asch and Natasha Van Eldik with the most gold medals at the Commonwealth Games by Australian bowlers, all of which have two.
The man affectionately known as Disco joined Bryant as the only player to ever win multiple men’s singles gold medals, and with the 2026 event staged in Bendigo, his town of birth, a third might not be out of the question.
In terms of medals, Barrie Lester claimed a fourth career medal with a silver in the men’s triples to equal Karen Murphy and Nathan Rice with the most ever medals won by Australian bowlers at the Games.

By Val Febbo Birmingham 2022 will go down in as a tournament to be remembered amongst the Australian bowling fraternity for Theeternity.history books were rewritten for the Jackaroos, who topped the dais on three occasions on UK soil, a previously barren body of land that had quashed the hopes and dreams of the green and gold army for decades. But not this year, with a maiden first-place final medal tally finish in Britain, and just the second ever first-place finish abroad, following Auckland 1990.
To make the event even more special, in terms of medal tallies, this was Australia’s second most successful Games in history, only outdone by the five gold medals won at Gold Coast Throughout2018.
The Australian squad enjoyed their most successful overseas Commonwealth Games, eclipsing that of Auckland 1990 where the team also won a trio of gold, but two less silver medals than what the nation did at Leamington Spa, the home of bowls at the 2022 Games.
Switching tact to Aaron Wilson and his men’s singles triumph made him the first player since David Bryant in 1978 to defend the men’s singles crown at the Games, the pair stand alone as the only ever to achieve the feat.

Around 7 million people, or roughly 29% of our population, live in regional, rural and remote parts of Australia. Last year a record number of Australians, some prompted by the COVID-19 situation moved out of our cities in search of a different, more relaxed lifestyle. COVID-19 and the ease of working from home — coupled with the increased convenience of the online economy — has made country living a feasible alternative for people living in metropolitan areas. However, regional Australia lacks parity with its city cousins in many areas. The exodus from the cities to the regions has put even greater pressure on education, job opportunities, infrastructure, telecommunications and, importantly, health facilities.

Last year almost 2 million people attended state public hospital emergency departments, but in regional areas, residents often lack easy access to health services.

Smaller local hospitals and community health services often lack healthcare resources and modern, up-to-date facilities. In many rural and regional areas there aren’t enough doctors, specialists, healthcare providers or adequate equipment. A recent report claimed some towns have been left with just one obstetric general practitioner to serve a region of 19,000 people. Often people living in regional areas are undertaking trips to hospitals a day’s drive away for consultations and basic surgeries.

On average, Australians living in regional, rural and remote areas have shorter lives and higher levels of disease and injury. Statistics show the five year survival rate for people diagnosed with cancer decreases as the remoteness increases and the death rate from cardiovascular disease is higher too. And the problem is growing as migration from larger cities places increased pressures on an already strained healthcare system.
Over 234,000 children are born in public hospitals per year throughout Australia. Without the Humpty Dumpty Foundation and its generous supporters, many would not Humpty’ssurvive.

Maternity, obstetric and paediatric services present a huge challenge for our rural areas. Some towns have not had a specialist maternity service for over two decades. In less than 30 years more than 250 rural maternity services have been closed, forcing women to travel hundreds of kilometres to give birth. And if there have been complications pre-birth or after delivery, the outcome can be catastrophic.
Wish List has linked donors with the needs of frontline healthcare workers for more than 30 years, raising over $90 million and enabling the purchase of thousands of pieces of medical equipment for paediatric wards, neonatal units, maternity and emergency departments.

HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?
If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are Low-impactbeneficial.
A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life. Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain. An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.
WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE?
HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED?
WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP?
Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal Minimallycord.
invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse. There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY
Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial. You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of Themobility.goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life.

RAJ: Being a surgeon is challenging, there is no room for complacency and mistakes. My parents and my partner are very proud of the work I do for the community.

Why did you become a neurosurgeon, and are other family members in the medical profession?
B&L: What motivates you to continue doing what you are RAJ:doing?I want to make use of my skills and do as much good for the community as I can.
B&L: What are your thoughts on the COVID crisis and how should we be dealing with it?
MBBS.
RAJ: The short answer is yes. Unfortunately our plans have been temporarily put on hold due to COVID.
B&L: People seem hesitant about receiving the jab because of side effects (blood clotting) from AstraZeneca.
Q&A WITH DR. RAJ REDDY
DR.
Raj graduated from Sydney University in 1999. He commenced his internship at Westmead Hospital and spent the following years working in general surgery, before commencing his neurosurgical training. He completed this in 2009, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
B&L: Congratulations Raj on your extraordinary career.
B&L: Can you tell me about your association with the other doctors in BrainSpine and how that came about?
RAJ: Yes, my father is a GP in the Liverpool area so a career in medicine became an appealing choice for me. However, I think my parents were disappointed that I became a neurosurgeon! They wanted me to be a physician, since the life of a surgeon can be demanding.
BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE recently had the enormous privilege of chatting with Doctor Raj Reddy about the things that are important to him: his family, his extraordinary career and the impact that COVID has had on society.
RAJ: Yes, Doctor James Drake from Toronto because he is neurosurgical royalty, vastly skilled, and experienced – yet is grounded and acknowledges his limitations.
RAJ: Balance, moderation, and remaining active.
B&L: How does your family feel about your success as a surgeon and the dedication to your work?
RAJ: All vaccines can have side effects; however, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the rare risk of side effects. It's better than getting COVID.
B&L: What is your advice for a healthy mind and body?
B&L: What led you to follow the brain and spine path?
RAJ: Unfortunately, the situation is very difficult for the public to understand, because of the changing data. The data does not change because it's wrong, it changes because we are continuously learning more about this disease. Also, the authorities' messaging is not as clear and straightforward as it could be.
Dr Raj Reddy is a dedicated neurosurgeon who strives to achieve the best possible outcome for his patients. His commitment to them is paramount; his ultimate goal is “to help patients return to their highest level of fitness and independence, and improve their overall quality of life’’. He is currently the Head of Department of Neurosurgery at the Prince of Wales Public. He also holds appointments at Prince of Wales Private, St Vincent’s Private, and The Sydney Children’s Hospital.
RAJ: I am an only child; I’ve always seen the bond and strength siblings have. Hence, developing a group of doctors with a similar mindset has many positives. We brainstorm difficult cases, and manage each other’s patients when one of us is B&L:away. What is the most common ailment you observe in your RAJ:patients?Iwork in both the public and private sectors; therefore, I deal with everything that occurs in the public sector, mainly trauma and cancer, and mainly degeneration issues in the private sector.

Mr Elliott said Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge was his family’s first foray into over-50s community lifestyle resorts, purchased back in 1977. Since that time, Palm Lake Group now offers 28 locations across three states of Australia, including three greenfield sites that are currently in various stages of development approval.
“We are definitely in the business of building impressive homes for modern over-50s but, more so, we are in the business of building great communities. A big part of this comes with providing on-site social and sporting facilities that allow our homeowners to come together and enjoy each other’s company.
“It’s important to note that we are always striving to improve and be better, to keep ourselves ahead of our competitors, but our main focus is on constantly completing facility upgrades and improvement projects to keep our property values and investment potential up,” he said.

“With 44 years of history in developing and operating over-50s communities, it’s important to our family company to continue to spend money on updating our resorts’ community facilities,” Mr Elliott explained.
“In a nutshell, these upgrades reflect directly on re-sale prices for our homeowners. Our residents also take great pride in their communities and we want to encourage that and make them feel proud to host their visiting friends and family members in their respective resort grounds.”
Construction is well underway on exciting new upgrades to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge’s community facilities on the back of a record surge in enquiry from over-50s looking for the security and support that lifestyle resorts like this one offers.

Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott said, when complete, the value of the improvements would be in the vicinity of $5-6 million.

For 60 years Amnesty International has campaigned for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We believe everyone is entitled to live in a world where their human rights are recognised, realised, and protected. We are proudly independent and non-partisan, which means gifts in Wills are critical to our work. A new Cardiacsmartphoneapplication
Cardiovascular disease affects all of us and accounts for over 1.2 million hospitalisations in Australia alone, so it comes as no surprise that the Prince of Wales Cardiology Department is the busiest inpatient department in the hospital.
The Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation through its Reg Inglis Award supported Dr Praveen Indraratna’s research, funding development and maintenance of a smartphone app, the procurement of mobile technology for patients with limited access and covered staffing costs on the project. Without the Reg Inglis Award, the project would not have been possible at such an impressive scale.
Dr Sze-Yuan Ooi said the application also allows patients to monitor their own progress and delivers lifestyle advice and education to patients in a format similar to a text message.

It is anticipated that Total Cardiac Care will help to manage patients heart health after they have been in hospital, prevent them being readmitted to hospital, and help motivate and educate patients about their condition.
Measurements taken using these devices will be transmitted via the patient’s own smartphone to a secure server that will be accessed by the research team.
“It also allows us to monitor our patients in their homes and if their measurements are outside the normal range, it triggers our team to respond.” says Dr Ooi, “It helps us to detect and act upon early warning signs if our patient’s heart condition is deteriorating.”
Dr. Praveen Indraratna is a general cardiologist who sub-specialises in cardiac imaging including cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. Dr Sze-Yuan Ooi is a clinician researcher, a Staff Specialist and is the current Director of the Coronary Care Unit. At the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation, our mission is to enhance and support the work of the inspirational clinicians and nurses, who are at the forefront of healthcare excellence. By working together, we can accelerate progress in discovering new treatment and therapies for illness and improving the quality-of-life for patients.

The Centenary Institute Centenary is a world-leading independent medical research institute based in Sydney. Since 1985, our scientists have brought renewed health and hope to Australians and people around the world by unlocking the complex mechanisms underlying disease and developing treatments that save lives. Our team of distinguished researchers are focused on addressing major health problems facing society across cancer, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease.
Ground-breaking advancements such as these take years of expert work and are not possible without the underpinning of fundamental knowledge. It is only when the underlying mechanisms of disease are fully understood that a treatment – or cure – can be successfully developed. At Centenary, the desire to understand the fundamental biology of disease lies at the core of all that we do. We aim to unlock the cellular mechanisms of disease – and then apply this knowledge to develop new diagnostics, treatments and cures for some of the most deadly and debilitating diseases affecting society today. We do this across three critical health areas – cancer, inflammation and cardiovascular disease. We are deeply honoured that so many thoughtful supporters have chosen to remember Centenary in their Will to support this essential work. Philanthropy plays a critical role in accelerating our medical research and every gift, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Superannuation is an asset that is growing in wealth for most people, and for some, it can be their most valuable asset. Most people do not realise that you cannot gift your superannuation balance in your Will. In order to pass on your superannuation to your intended beneficiary, you need to complete a non-binding nomination or binding nomination through your superannuation fund. Ultimately, where your superannuation passes on your death is going to be determined by the trustee
When completing an estate plan, it is important to identify all the assets owned by an individual and how they are held, which will help uncover the best strategy to ensure who you ultimately want to benefit from that asset after you pass away, Assetswill.that fall outside of your estate include:
Estate Planning: How to ensure your assets go to who you want them to 44 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Estate planning is a very personal and tailored process. Everyone has different types of assets, as well as different family circumstances to take into consideration. A simple Will may not serve you as intended, because not all assets can be treated the same and gifted in your Will. It can come as a surprise to many people that some of the most valuable assets they ‘’own’’ fall outside of their estate. In many instances, it is not until someone sits down with an estate planning lawyer to discuss their intentions that they realise there is more to estate planning than writing a Will. It is vital to understand that just because you may have control over an asset, does not necessarily mean you “own” it, in the context of making a Will and for that asset to be left to the person or charity you wish. There are many assets held in different legal entities in modern times, and the control or ownership of these assets can be a difficult issue to unravel.
• Superannuation • Life insurance policies • Jointly owned real estate and bank accounts • Jointly owned shares • Assets held in family trusts Superannuation
of your superannuation fund. When there is a binding nomination, or non-binding nomination, in place, the trustee will look at who you have nominated and what your instructions are.
Jointly held assets (real estate, bank accounts, shares, etc.)
Just like superannuation, life insurance does not form part of your estate. The person you want to benefit from these assets when you die should be arranged with the superannuation fund beforehand as part of the estate planning process.
In the majority of cases where a couple owns real property together (i.e. a house, unit or land), the property is usually held as joint tenants. If you own a property as joint tenants, this is not an asset that can be gifted in your Will until the last tenant who shares the ownership passes away.
Life Insurance can be a bit of a trap for the unsuspecting. Where the proceeds are going to be paid will depend on: • who or what is insured; • who or what owns the policy; and • whether or not a beneficiary has been nominated to receive the benefits directly.

Assets held in trusts
A common misconception that many people have is that the person in control of the trust can gift the trust assets via their Will. That is simply not the case. Trust assets are held outside of the estate.
Beneficiaries of a family trust do not have a fixed entitlement or interest in the trust funds. The trustee controls where the income is allocated and to which beneficiaries. Whether it is a company acting as the trustee, or an individual, it is that person or entity that controls the trust and those assets. Just to add some further complexity, most trust deeds name an ‘appointor’ or ‘principal’ that has the power to remove and appoint the trustee. This is usually the person or entity that ‘controls’ or ‘owns’ the assets of the trust.
If you own a property as tenants in common, when you pass away your share of the property will pass pursuant to your Will.
Under a joint tenancy, when the first joint tenant dies, the property automatically reverts to the surviving joint tenant, without reference to your Will. It is only when that property is solely in the surviving tenant’s name that they can then leave that asset to a beneficiary in their Will.
Planning for the future to preserve your wishes Estate planning should be a priority for everyone, no matter their age or health status. From writing a Will to ensure your estate goes to who you intend it to after you die, to making an Enduring Power of Attorney to ensure someone you trust can manage your affairs if you lose mental capacity, it is important to have your most basic legal documents up to date to give you and your family peace of mind.
Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall set to divorce
Wendi Deng, Mr Murdoch’s third wife, wanted their two daughters, Grace and Chloe, to have a vote in the Family Trust, but Mr Murdoch refused to force the issue due to the objections of his other children. While Ms Hall may not be entitled to a trust share of Murdoch's wealth, the couple's properties since their marriage in 2016 may be contested in the divorce.
Mr Murdoch split from his second wife, Anna Murdoch Mann, a Scottish journalist, in 1999. They have three children together, James, Lachlan, and Elisabeth. His first wife, Patricia Booker, a former flight attendant and model with whom he had one daughter, Prudence, divorced Mr Murdoch in 1967 after their 11-year marriage.
Last December, they splashed more than $279 million on a 340,000-acre cattle ranch near Yellowstone Park in the USA. They also own a number of other assets including a Los Angeles winery, a Californian ranch, and an Australian sheep and cattle farm. It will be interesting to see how the dispute will unfold.
46 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Details of the settlement will be subject to negotiation; however, it is not likely that this will have any impact on Mr Murdoch's media empire.
Today only Lachlan works alongside his father, running Fox Corporation. The remaining heirs do not have an active role in the running of the family business.
The thing that binds Murdoch’s children together is not the empire; it's the family trust. Financial benefits go to all of Rupert Murdoch's six children. However, the trust is controlled by the CEO, who has four votes, and his four oldest children, who have one vote apiece: Prudence, Elisabeth, James, and Lachlan. The four older siblings will also get to decide who will control Rupert's votes after he dies.
Forbes states Mr Murdoch and his family are worth $US17.9 billion (AUS $26 billion). It is unknown whether Mr Murdoch and Ms Hall had a prenuptial agreement. However, it is likely they do, considering Mr Murdoch’s large divorce settlements from previous marriages.
Jerry Hall filed a petition for divorce in the Superior Court of California last week, citing "irreconcilable differences". In her petition, she sought unspecified spousal support from 91-year-old Murdoch and also wants him to pay her legal Thisfees. will be Mr Murdoch’s fourth divorce. He was previously married to entrepreneur Wendi Deng, his third wife, who he divorced in 2014 after 14 years of marriage. They have two daughters together, Grace and Chloe.
In 2019, the couple bought a $13.8 million Georgian property in Oxfordshire, England, and a year later, they bought the Great Tew Manor in the same English county.
Jerry Hall was previously the partner of Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, with whom she has four children. The pair met around 1976 when both parties were otherwise involved — Jagger with then-wife Bianca and Hall with then-fiancé Bryan Ferry. Ironically, Hall starred in the music video of Ferry’s biggest solo hit in the UK, his incarnation of “Let’s Stick Together”. This case is the epitome of a blended family, which raises issues around dividing property after separation, spousal maintenance, estate planning, and succession.
Jerry Hall has officially filed for divorce from Rupert Murdoch, six years after the pair married, after receiving an email from her husband communicating the relationship was over.

Column Q & A WITH DR. HARRY...
DR. HARRY : Thank you, I was about 12 or 13 when I decided I wanted to become a vet and I do what I do because I love it.
DR. HARRY :After I completed my 5 year course of Veterinary science, I joined a Veterinary Practise in Gladesville, during that time I developed an affinity with dogs. I then went to the UK and practised there for 2 years.
DR. HARRY :Better homes and Garden is an icon of the 7 network. It has something appealing to offer to everyone. The Better Homes and Garden cast and crew are my television family and my friend on the show is Graham Ross, the Horticulturalist.
B&L : What was your second career choice if veterinary science had not come to fruition?
DR. HARRY : Yes. We lived in Linley Point, which is on the Lane Cove river, as a matter of fact my brother Neil still lives in the family home.
DR. HARRY :Yes that is correct, Wendy, our 12-year-old Australian stock horse mare was the ring bearer on our big day.
B&L : Congratulations on your amazing career, what age were you, when you decided on a veterinary career and what motivates you to continue with your work?
DR. HARRY : My father’s ambition was always to become a vet, and he subsequently started a veterinary science course, however he withdrew after 12 months and joined a shipping company. So yes we were both heavily influenced by my father’s ambition and his love of animals.
DR. HARRY : Suze and I love what we do, and I would like to continue being involved with animals and continue working as a vet until I possibly can. However, we do plan on reducing the number of animals that we care for ultimately.
DR. HARRY : I want to keep going as a vet, for as long as I can. STORY COURTESY OF CATHERINE COLUSSO
DR. HARRY : Suze and I met 10 years ago at a mutual friend’s barbeque and we haven’t looked back since. I am sure that Suze will agree with me, when I describe our wedding day as magical and I wouldn’t change a thing. Suze is a very caring and hardworking person, and I’m so lucky to call myself her husband.
I was able to “fill in a 25 minute segment, apparently the switch board lit up after my segment and the rest is history. I then became involved with shows such as “Burke’s back Yard’’ with Don Burke, “Talk to the animals’’ and “Harry’s Practice’’ with Katrina Warren. I have now been involved with “Better Homes and Garden since 2004.
DR. HARRY : IN 1969 I got a call from channel 7 asking me to be the “fill’’ on the “Today’’ show which was hosted by Patsy Noble and Bruce Webster. The “fill’’ means you fill in when someone does not turn up.
B&L : You and your longtime partner Suze were recently married on your 125 acre property West of Port Macquarie with a menagerie of animals in attendance. How long have you known Suze, and can you describe what your wedding day was like?
B&L : You and Suzie live on a sprawling acreage property West of Port Macquarie. Is the workload overwhelming, and what motivates you to keep going?
B&L : You graduated from Sydney University in 1965 at the age of 21 with an honours degree for Veterinary Science. What did you do after you graduated?
DR. HARRY : I was absolutely touched to receive the honour, it was a great acknowledgement for my work…………………….. B&L: What is next on the agenda for Dr. Harry?
B&L : You have now appeared on Better homes and Garden since 2004. The program has won numerous awards. Why do you think the show is so popular with viewers?
B&L : Were you born and raised in Sydney?
49AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
DR. HARRY : I would have become a geologist, I had a very impressive rock collection as a youngster and I loved exploring places like the Jenolan Caves when I was younger.
B&L : Is it true that one of your pets played a major part on your wedding day?
B&L : Both you and your brother Neil became vets, was that coincidental or was that because of your father’s influence?
B&L : You were awarded an AM (member of the Order of Australia) for your services to veterinary science & animal well fare in 2014. How did you feel at the time when your received the award?
B&L : Can you tell me what made you pursue a media career, and how did that transition occur?
DR. HARRY :Animals are the world’s greatest listeners, which is of great benefit to everyone. They have the ability to sense our moods and I love the way they react with people.

However, the bulk of them are owned by the Crown Estate, an independent commercial business created by an Act of Parliament. There is also the Duchy of Cornwall, a seperate entity that owns 7,552 hectares of land in the country. It’s a complex system spread across dozens of Royal Family members, who are still living in these decadent homes.

Yann Charavel, a director of STX commented:People with disabilities should not be overlooked when creating travel experiences. In fact, according to the World Health Organization 2020 Disability Report, “almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life. Over one billion people –about 15% of the global population – live with some form of disability and this number is increasing.”

MSC Cruises will bring two ships to local waters in February, each catering to 3,000 passengers. The MSC Poesia will visit Auckland, Sydney Brisbane and Cairns as part of a world cruise, while MSC Magnifica will visit Auckland, Hobart, Sydney, Cairns as Darwin, also on a world cruise. Cruising comes home: Sailing in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific
Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse will be based in Sydney between October 2022 and April 2023 for her inaugural season of cruises visiting Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Port Arthur is a new port for Celebrity, and some Pacific itineraries include calls to Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.
Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess is sailing her first local season out of Brisbane until May, when she heads off on her world cruise and Grand Princess will debut in Australia in October, sailing out of Melbourne and Adelaide. Majestic Princess will also offer a wide selection of cruises around Australia, New Zealand and the South CelebrityPacific.
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth will make her first circumnavigation of Australia in November before sailing a range of two- to 21-night itineraries in Australia and New Zealand until the end of March. In November, Carnival Cruise Line is introducing Carnival Luminosa, which will be based in Brisbane. Itineraries will include the Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach and the South Pacific, while Carnival Splendor returns to Sydney for cruises to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Local waters have long been the most popular for Australian and New Zealand cruise fans. Travel writer and avid cruiser Sally Macmillan looks at what we can expect in our region as cruising rebounds. Cruise ports big and small around Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific are gearing up to welcome dozens of ships and thousands of travel-starved passengers for the 2022-23 Wave Season. It’s been a long time between visits and all the major cruise lines are returning to local waters, several of them deploying ships in the region for the first time.
In December, Norwegian Cruise Line’s extensively refurbished Norwegian Spirit will make her debut Down Under, sailing transTasman and Pacific itineraries until March. Meanwhile, on the luxury front, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer arrives in Australia in December for her first Asia-Pacific season, but sadly for fans of the ‘most luxurious cruise ship ever built’ it is almost entirely sold out – best get in quick for her return in 2023-2024!
Last but certainly not least, New Zealand’s Heritage Expeditions runs more expeditions around less-travelled parts of New Zealand than any other cruise line, with itineraries ranging from seven to 17 days. Its two ships are the 140-guest Heritage Adventurer and the 18-guest, New Zealand-built motoryacht Heritage Explorer.
35-night circumnavigation of Australia, while Azamara Cruises’ 702-guest Azamara Quest will sail a variety of Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific cruises between December and February.
The long-established Australian company Coral Expeditions operates three ships that cruise all over Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Purpose-built for exploring tropical destinations, Coral Discoverer accommodates 72 guests while sister ships Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer accommodate 120 guests each.
Finally, stations.a word about travel insurance. It’s important to remember that even when cruising in Australian waters, you’re not covered by Medicare for medical problems. Cover for covid is complex and you should ask your travel agent for expert advice. If you’re doing your own research, read the product disclosure statement (PDS) thoroughly before paying the premium.
As the world ‘learns to live with’ covid, cruise lines have implemented stringent health and safety protocols for crew and guests. Accommodation is set aside for isolation purposes, all crew have to be fully vaccinated and all guests should check what vaccinations and tests are required with individual cruise lines before booking.

Policies about wearing masks in public areas onboard vary from line to line, but as at home, it makes sense to mask up and maintain social distancing wherever possible. On most ships, you no longer have to gather in large groups for muster drill – you’ll watch it on your TV or device instead. It’s also advisable to avoid using lifts whenever you can – apart from adding a bit of incidental exercise by using the stairs, passenger numbers in lifts will be limited and the wait will be longer. Serving yourself at the buffet is uncommon on many lines – instead, staff working behind glass counters will serve you at food

Le Soleal and Le Laperouse will explore less-travelled destinations in the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand between October and February. Then in April, Ponant’s 30-guest, three-masted Le Ponant will make her debut in the Kimberley, joined by Le Laperouse; Le Soleal will also offer Kimberley itineraries from June to October. Meanwhile, Ponant’s Le Paul Gauguin cruises in the South Pacific year-round.
APT’s 90-guest MS Caledonian Sky is another Kimberley favourite. From October to May, she will offer a series of expedition cruises around the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania and South Australia before heading back north for the 2023 season.

“In fact, rates of hospitalisations due to Covid-19 are between 30 and 80 times lower on cruise ships than they are on land.”
The cruise industry’s health protocols are still among the most stringent to be found anywhere in tourism and go well beyond the Covid-19 measures in place on land.
Cruising Feature 55AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
In Australasia, those who sail are required to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and to have proof of their vaccination, though there are processes in place for small children and those with medical Guestsexemptions.arealso required to take a Covid-19 test and receive a negative result prior to travelling, and must complete health declarations before boarding.
Even as borders were closing through the first months of the pandemic, cruise lines were already working with medical experts to redefine how we cruise.
Scientists, epidemiologists and other respected medical advisors had begun a complete bow-to-stern review of cruising, looking at every aspect of the cruise experience to decide how it might need to change in response to Covid-19.
Millions of passengers have sailed successfully under these measures in more than 100 countries where cruise operations have resumed, including in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Asia, South America, Africa, and Australasia. “The experience around the world where ships have been operating for some time has been that serious illness due to Covid-19 is rare on cruise ships, thanks to testing and vaccination requirements and extensive onboard measures,” Mr Katz said.
Cruise lines provide instructions to make the process as smooth as possible, often involving apps or online systems to gather the necessary requirements. They also provide healthy sailing advice, including in-cabin information and videos, to help explain the new cruise environment and provide other instructions.
The result is the most extensive set of new health protocols to be found in almost any industry, allowing a careful resumption of cruise operations that began in some countries as early as the second half of “From2020.the outset, cruise lines knew the only possible response to the pandemic was to get the best medical advice from the experts and ensure that health and safety remained the top priority,” said Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz.
In Australasia, they include testing and vaccination requirements for passengers and crew as well as extensive protocols covering aspects like distancing, sanitation, ventilation, and response procedures.
Cruise ships have enhanced medical facilities on board and staffing for potential Covid-19 isolation and treatment. There are detailed response plans in place and close cooperation with health authorities for reporting and management of suspected or confirmed cases. “No setting is immune to Covid-19, but we have the processes in place to reduce the risks of Covid-19 getting on board and for dealing responsibly with the virus when cases do appear,” Mr Katz Forsaid.the passenger, the health measures mean relatively few changes to the way they enjoy their cruise, but provide layers of precautions and protocols behind the scenes.
“To win the confidence of travellers, we had to show we had measures in place that would not only mitigate against the risks of Covid-19, but also provide detailed response plans to deal with any cases that might emerge.”
Health measures mean we sail with confidence
“The most reassuring aspect is that the essential cruise experience is still there, just as we enjoyed before the pandemic,” Mr Katz said. “The reaction we keep hearing from cruise passengers is that they love being back at sea and have confidence in the health protocols we have in place. The experience we’ve had in other countries shows this confidence only continues to grow.”
“These new fuels will require a considerable amount of research and development, but we already see potential alternatives on the horizon,” Mr Katz said. “Cruise lines are embarking on joint ventures with fuel companies and other developers, and we’re seeing more investment in future fuels and power sources like biofuel, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, hybrid propulsion and electric batteries.”
CLIA cruise lines recently announced new emissions targets that will set the standard for cruising into coming decades and help drive further investment in sustainable operations. Ocean-going CLIA members are now pursuing net zero carbon cruising by 2050 and are working on the technological advances needed to achieve this – not just for cruising but for the wider shipping sector globally.
“The cruise industry represents less than 1% of world shipping, but we aim to be leaders internationally when it comes to reducing emissions and protecting the environment,” Mr Katz said.
“Cruise tourism brings enormous benefits to communities around the world, but our aim is to ensure these benefits can continue in a way that is sustainable and provides lasting results.”

Clear waters and a pristine natural environment are both essential parts of the cruise experience, and cruise lines have long worked to protect the oceans, rivers and landscapes they sail to.
But as the world strives to reduce carbon emissions and tackle the effects of climate change, the cruise industry has united around even greater ambitions that will define the ships of the future.
“This has been building for some time and there are already many important developments pioneered by the cruise sector,” said Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz. “New alternative fuels, new sources of clean energy and new ways to protect our marine environment are already a reality and delivering results, but there is still more to achieve.”
Sailing towards zero carbon
Around the world, cruise lines are investing billions of dollars in new ships and new technologies that make sustainability the priority in cruising. The issue has become the most critical topic of discussion in cruising – at every level from the board rooms to the shipyards – and new innovations will be needed to help achieve the industry’s goals.
“Around the world we’re seeing increasing use of low-emission transitional fuels like LNG and technologies like exhaust gas cleaning systems which make big reductions in cruise ship emissions,” Mr Katz said. LNG fuel produces zero sulphur emissions, 85% lower nitrogen oxide emissions, almost 100% fewer particulate emissions and a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The world’s first LNG-powered ship was introduced at the end of 2018, and by 2027 LNG will power more than half the new capacity of the global cruise fleet. Importantly, LNG is also a transitional fuel, which means LNG-ready ships can adapt to a future generation of fuels that will bring further benefits in coming years.
Cruise ships are also maintaining a focus on reducing waste and recycling. In some cases, cruise operators can repurpose up to 100% of waste generated on board by removing, reusing, recycling, and converting waste to energy.
Other advances protect the waters ships sail upon, like the advanced wastewater treatment systems now in use aboard most cruise ships. These systems will be used on all new ships on order and can treat wastewater to a higher standard than systems used in many coastal Effortscities. to achieve greater sustainability also extend into social and economic areas, where the cruise industry is working closely with communities to develop responsible tourism management practices that maximise economic benefits while minimising other impacts of Atvisitation.thesame time, cruise lines are working in developing countries to help create business opportunities and support charitable efforts in areas of health, education, conservation, and wildlife protection.

The Charge of the 4th Light Horse, 1917 The Battle in Brief
The charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse at Beersheba late in the afternoon of 31 October 1917, is remembered as the last great cavalry charge. The assault on Beersheba began at dawn with the infantry divisions of the British XX Corps attacking from the south and south-west. Despite artillery and air support, neither the infantry attacks from the south, or the Anzac Mounted Division’s attack from the east had succeeded in capturing Beersheba by mid-afternoon.
With time running out for the Australians to capture Beersheba and its wells before dark, Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel, the Australian commander of the Desert Mounted Corps, ordered Brigadier General William Grant, commanding the 4th Light Horse Brigade, to make a mounted attack directly towards the town. Chauvel knew, from aerial photographs, that the Turkish trenches in front of the town were not protected by barbed wire. However, German bombing had forced the 4th Brigade into a scattered formation and it was not until 4.50 pm that they were in position.

Beersheba
The Light Horse moved off at the trot, and almost at once quickened to a gallop. As they came over the top of the ridge and looked down the long, gentle open slope to Beersheba, they were seen by the Turkish gunners, who opened fire with shrapnel. But the pace was too fast for the gunners. After three kilometres Turkish machine-guns opened fire from the flank, but they were detected and silenced by British artillery. The rifle fire from the Turkish trenches was wild and high as the Light Horse approached. The front trench and the main trench were jumped and some men dismounted and then attacked the Turks with rifle and bayonet from the rear. Some galloped ahead to seize the rear trenches, while other squadrons galloped straight into NearlyBeersheba.allthewells of Beersheba were intact and further water was available from a storm that had filled the pools. The 4th and 12th Light Horse casualties were thirty-one killed and thirty-six wounded; they captured over 700 men. The capture of Beersheba meant that the Gaza-Beersheba line was turned. Gaza fell a week later and on 9 December 1917, the British troops entered Jerusalem.
The Brigade assembled behind rising ground 6 kilometres south-east of Beersheba with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on the right, the 12th Light Horse Regiment on the left and the 11th Light Horse Regiment in reserve.
The Australian Light Horse was to be used purely as cavalry for the first time. Although they were not equipped with cavalry sabres, the Turks who faced the long bayonets held by the Australians did not consider there was much difference between a charge by cavalry and a charge by mounted infantry.

Everyone deserves an opportunity to make a better life for themselves, for their children, and for their grandchildren. Please consider supporting CARE to help women around the world defeat poverty in their communities. Kind regards, Phoebe Wynn-Pope Director, CARE Australia
As a member of the global CARE Confederation, we work with communities all over the world. But it’s across the South-East Asia and Pacific region where CARE Australia is most effective. The vast majority of our staff are local to the country where they work, and we’ve built strong, long-term relationships with partners who work in their own communities.
Our 75 years have taught us that women play a vital role in defeating poverty. That’s why CARE puts women and girls at the heart of our work.
I have seen firsthand the tremendous change CARE is making around the world. CARE’s programs support women to earn an income, feed their families and access healthcare, benefiting future generations.
In 1987, former Australian prime minister Malcolm Fraser became the founding Chairperson of CARE Australia. Mr Fraser was a passionate humanitarian and In 1987, my father Malcolm Fraser, wanted to create the ‘Australian face of international aid’, when he became the founding Chairperson of CARE Australia. He cared deeply for people living in poverty and believed that a better world was possible if enough caring people came together to make it a reality.

Who we are CARE Australia seeks to end extreme poverty for all who experience it. We provide assistance to those in poverty regardless of race, religion or ethnicity and support women around the world to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice.
Our history CARE was founded in 1945 to rush lifesaving CARE packages to survivors of World War II. Fast forward to today, CARE has grown to become one of the world’s largest independent humanitarian relief organisations, working alongside communities in over 100 countries.
Our programs focus on women because we know we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.
The world’s poorest people are the most vulnerable to devastating emergencies – natural disasters, war, famine, and outbreaks of disease. And during disasters and emergencies, women and girls suffer most. They’re more likely to be killed or injured by tropical cyclones and floods as well as facing increased risk of violence.
Why women and girls?
Throughout history, women have been denied rights and resources, and excluded from the decisions that impact their lives. No matter how wealthy or poor a country is, we see the same patterns of gender inequality but in different ways. When food is scarce, it is the women who will go without. Girls are more likely than boys to be pulled out of school to work or help around the home, and women’s work is grossly undervalued. The types of work women tend to perform, such as caring for children, the elderly and the sick, are low paid — if they’re paid at all.

In times of crisis, CARE provides crucial emergency assistance like shelter, food and hygiene kits. And once the danger passes, we work to ensure women have the resources and training they need to help their communities rebuild and prepare for future crises. In the Asia-Pacific region, women and children are up to 14 times more likely than men to die or be injured in a disaster and its aftermath.

Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte will all start at a new school in September following the Cambridge family's move to Windsor - and it's just as fancy as you would Princeexpect.
Alongside a focus on sport, the school boasts a new £6m development that offers pupils a "remarkable environment" for Art, Design & Technology and the Performing Arts. They say past students have gone on to perform in London's West End.

Lambrook has been laying the foundations for its pupils’ futures. During their time with us, we give our pupils the ‘Feathers to Fly’ so that when they leave us, they will spread their wings and will take flight; leaving Lambrook as confident, happy, engaging, mature, considerate and thoughtful young adults who are outward looking global citizens."
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children will all start a new Prep School from September
William and Kate have decided to send their trio to Lambrook School - a co-educational Prep School for 615 boys and girls aged 3-13 set in 52 acres of countryside, which is just around the corner from their new home Adelaide Cottage. But it doesn't come cheap, and the fees for the three children could set them back more than £50,000 every year.
The 52 acre site includes its own golf course
The school has its very own Orchard complete with bees, chickens, and even pigs. There is also woodland for the little ones to explore, a nine-hole golf course, a 25-metre swimming pool, a cricket pitch, squash courts and a dance studio. Fees for the top school range between £4,000 to £7,000 per term depending on the age of the child.
The school, which has its Christian faith 'at the centre of its foundation', offers trips away for all year groups, and in the past year has taken students to Sweden, France, Italy, Iceland, Somerset, Dorset, South Africa, and the Isle of Wight.
