Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.

The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed

for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The Point wins the battle in the UBC The Taren Point team of Ali Forsyth, David Axon and John Green emerged $60,000 richer from the Ultimate Bowls Championship’s ‘UBC Two’ event at Melbourne’s Deer Park Club.

In an enthralling performance The Point men defeated defending champions Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Wayne Turley from Dandenong Club in the main event to collect the big cheque, while the vanquished had to be content with $30,000 for their efforts.

The top combinations, who graduated through UBC’s grueling yet adrenalincharged 11-match qualifying series, to compete for a slice of the $150,000 event prize fund, would feel they survived a gauntlet run on the Deer Park Dome’s arena to reach the great eight. The first stanza of Deer Park’s first big time bowls fling saw Dandenong Club, the defending champions, and runners-up Streaky Bay Sharks from South Australia,

top their respective sections.

Section A saw those familiar Dandenong faces of Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Wayne Turley rule the roost two wins clear of Port Melbourne’s Navigators Leigh McIlvenny, Nathan Bush and Brett Dodd. Aussie Jackaroo Corey Wedlock and his ITP Queensland teammates Sean Baker and John Newell powered into contention with four Day 2 wins – but it was the host club’s Deer Park Chargers who set the tongues wagging. Starting the day languishing in eleventh, the chargers, David Holt, Lee Schraner and Brett Mahoney, clawed their way through six heroic battles to claim the final qualifying spot.

In Section B qualifying South Australia’s Streaky Bay Sharks - Ben Twist, Josh Studham and John Fleming - lead from go to whoa to secure top spot after their appointed rounds. In contrast the Port Melbourne Borough Boyz - Nathan Wilson, Brett Spurr and Johnny McCarron – having

been well-placed overnight in third place with four wins, failed to add to their tally on Day 2, plummeting to ninth overall.

However, the Warilla Gorillas - Jeremy Henry, Aaron Teys and Jamie Mitchell – who were fifth when the lights went out, won all five starts to finish second ahead of Taren Point’s Ali Forsyth, David Axon and John Green; while Cabramatta’s Bullants Aaron Wilson, Ray Pearse and Ben Morthorpe held on to the fourth place they coveted overnight. Four cracking quarter finals – each with it’s own soap opera, including a single shot thriller between the Streaky Bay Sharks and the host club’s Chargers - could have easily been scripted by the sport’s biggest names, including world champions Ben Twist, Aaron Teys, Jeremy Henry, Aaron Wilson, Ben Twist and Ali Forsyth.

However, it was in the semi finals that Kelly and Lester again signified their intentions, dishing out a merciless 90-48 flogging to the gallant ITP duo of Corey Wedlock and Sean Baker in their fiveend eliminator. In contrast, an emotion-charged semi final clash saw the host club’s faithful in pain when their charges Brett Mahoney and David Holt come up short 51-69 against experienced Taren Point internationals Ali Forsyth and David Axon. From there the main event scenario is simple – five ends of pairs for a share of $90,000 – you do the math. It was a cosmopolitan competition with Forsyth, a New Zealander and Welshman Axon against Kelly from Ireland and Lester a true blue Aussie. There’s got to be a joke in there somewhere.

The fateful five ends were sheer bliss to bowls purists with the four internationals demonstrating every shot and skill the old sport demands. But in the wash-up, a rookie stadium came of age by presenting one of the great events; Ali Forsyth and David Axon led marginally from start to finish; while Gary Kelly and Barrie Lester attracted even more fans with their electrifying brand of bowls.

Special mention to best mates John Green and Wayne Turley who were the third team members from both franchises and contributed their own brand of magic when pressed into service. In the much-sought-after ‘Golden Toucher’ award, Nathan Bush from Port Melbourne Navigators amassed 33 chalkers to clinch the medal, while UBC One’s winner Ryan Bester from Broadbeach

Don and Dianne are taking part in the Travelling for Treatment study to shine a light on the difficulties they have faced and to help others in a similar situation. The research, jointly conducted with the University of Southern Queensland, will help Cancer Council Queensland develop and implement interventions to improve outcomes for regional and rural cancer patients and their carers, especially those who must travel for treatment.

In 2018 Cancer Council Queensland provided accommodation to over 2894 regional cancer patients and 1461 carers in six CCQ lodges across the state. But accommodation lodges aren’t just places to stay. They’re a home-away-from-home for Queenslanders from regional areas who need to travel for treatment. For Don and Dianne, it’s not only the accommodation that they appreciate. It’s the network of people and support they have received that has made it so comforting.

Despite going into Round 7 undefeated, Dawn fought hard throughout to maintain her advantage. "There were no easy games. All my opponents were tough. It was a quality field," she said.

To ensure she was prepared, Dawn concentrated on her singles game in the weeks going in. "I had practiced some singles match play in the lead up to the event and played in plenty of tournaments."

The young Jackaroo has plenty to look forward to. Dawn's win means she will now represent Australia at the 2020 World Singles Champion of Champions in Adelaide, SA. "I also debut for Australia at the Multi Nations and then play in the development team for Trans Tasman series in November."

GETTING ‘BOWLED OVER’ BY WRIST PAIN? The ABS reports that lawn bowls is the fifth most popular sport in Australia today especially among seniors, as it provides low impact exercise in a social setting.

Despite reporting few injuries, participants are at greater risk of developing one particular condition than in most other sports - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

CTS is the single most commonly diagnosed hand condition and accounts for about 90% of all nerve entrapments in the general population. It is particularly prevalent within the lawn bowls community, often referred to as “Bowler’s Wrist”.

CTS can be a debilitating condition, defined as a chronic compression/injury of the median nerve in the front of the wrist. It is caused by increased pressure within the carpal tunnel (a narrow anatomical passageway in the wrist), leading to impaired function of the median nerve. This can be due to injury (e.g., fracture/ dislocation); the size of the carpal tunnel itself; nerve damage (e.g., from diabetes); inflammatory conditions (e.g., arthritis); obesity; fluid retention; other medical conditions; and

(specifically) sustained, repetitive tasks (e.g., bowling).

Common symptoms include aching, numbness, tingling and/or burning in the palm of one or both hands (often more pronounced in the dominant hand), as well as intermittent “electric shocks” in the wrist/hand. Weakness of handgrip is also common. Symptoms often increase at night and/or early in the morning (this often impairs sleep) and are often exacerbated by repetitive tasks (e.g. repeatedly throwing a heavy ball – or bowling). CTS symptoms also occur frequently when driving. Patients may “flick” the affected hand in an attempt to alleviate symptoms and often experience impaired grip strength/manual dexterity or start “dropping things”.

Many bowlers may “play through” the pain; so as not to ‘let down’ teammates or ‘miss out on the fun’, or due to the misconception the pain will simply ‘go away on its own’. However, when adequate rest/treatment is not sought, the symptoms of CTS often worsen, resulting in the need for even more time off the green. There is also the risk of further nerve-injury, as continued playing will likely exacerbate the condition. The good news is that CTS is both an easily diagnosable and treatable condition - with the right testing and advice.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the “gold standard” in diagnostic testing for CTS, as they provide objective information on the function of the median nerve across the carpal tunnel.

New South Wales duo Ray Pearse and Dawn Hayman have been respectively crowned the 2019 Men’s and Women’s Australian Champion of Champions following standout performances at South Perth Bowls Club, WA. Pearse triumphed 21-4 in the final round of play against Northern Territory’s Bruce Fyfe to make up the shot margin required to overtake Victoria’s Nathan Bush, who held the lead and a five-shot advantage following the penultimate round. Men’s final standings: Gold – Ray Pearse (NSW) Silver – Nathan Bush (VIC)

CAN THE ROYAL FAMILY SURVIVE ANOTHER ROYAL SCANDAL?????

The British Royal family have certainly had their share of scandals over the years, with various members of the family causing irretrievable damage to the monarchy through a series of bad judgements and irresponsible behaviour.

Prince Andrew’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted ‘’sex trafficker’’ seems to be the latest scandal to rock The Royal Family. However the extent of Epstein’s relationship with Prince Andrew is unknown. Prince Andrew has been accused of inappropriate behaviour by several women through his association with Epstein, who was notorious for supplying under aged girls for the rich and famous. Unfortunately, Epstein was found dead in his cell after being charged and arrested earlier this year, causing widespread panic throughout many famous households around the globe. Consequently Prince Andrew has now released a statement admitting, ‘’he stayed at several of Epstein’s properties, but saw him infrequently.’’ Buckingham Palace also released a statement categorically denying any wrong doing by the Prince. However, many sceptics fear the scandal could intensify once more evidence has been gathered, making it almost impossible for the Prince’s reputation to recover completely.

In 1936 King Edward V111’s love affair with a married woman stirred the imagination and hostility of millions of people all over the globe. The world was left shocked and conflicted, when it became clear that the King was choosing passion over

protocol. The King ruffled a few feathers by declaring to the world that he would be abdicating the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. In November of that same year, Edward reiterated his intentions, telling Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin he intended to marry Wallis. The Church of England, however did not allow divorcees to marry into The Royal Family. Therefore on the 10th of December, 1936 King Edward VIII signed his abdication papers declaring.

Her outrageous behaviour, resulted in the demise of her marriage, and the end of her relationship with the Royal Family. Fergie was photographed topless in the

South of France, having her toes sucked by her financial advisor Johnny Bryan while still legally married to Prince Andrew. Following the publication of the embarrassing photos, tension between Fergie and senior members of The Royal Family reached mammoth proportions, prompting The Duke of Edinburgh to acknowledge that her behaviour had caused embarrassment and disharmony to the family.

That same year, a taped phone call between illicit lovers, Prince Charles and his then mistress Camilla Parker Bowles sent shock waves around the globe and rattled The Monarchy to the core of its foundations. The excruciating details of the conversation caused enormous controversy worldwide, when the heir to the throne compared himself to a tampon. Unsurprisingly, the graphic conversation caused severe damage to Prince Charles’ reputation, and confirmed that he was indeed an adulterer. The scandal, quickly dubbed ‘’Camillagate’’and a ‘’Royal Flush’’ ultimately resulted in the separation of Charles and Diana. It is not surprising that The Queen described 1992 as ‘’Annus Horribilis’’ and added that it was not a year that she could look back on with undiluted pleasure. TONY : When I was hosting ‘’Sale of the Century’’ between 1980 and 1991, incidentally 30% of the Australian population tuned in to watch it. Why did you stop doing the show

TONY : AFTER ELEVAN YEARS OF DOING THE SHOW, I SIMPLY GOT OVER IT. What have you been doing since the show ended.

TONY : I released my autobiography in 2001, and I have sporadically toured the country with my piano player, playing at various art centres across Australia.

A BEHIND THE SCENES “IN DEPTH’’ GLIMPSE INTO THE COMPLEX WORLD OF SCREEN POWERHOUSE

Tony Bonner AM I recently had the enormous privilege of catching-up and interviewing Australian Icon Tony Bonner. I must admit, I felt a little nervous and somewhat overwhelmed at the thought of meeting an artist of Tony’s calibre. Even though, I had spent several hundred hours researching this man’s incredible life. However his honesty, sense of humour and compassion, coupled with his unrelenting positive energy were so blatantly obvious, any rogue thoughts of feeling anxious luckily 40

soon subsided.

During his phenomenal career, which incidentally spans more than five decades. Tony has appeared in an eclectic mix of herculean films, television shows and live theatre. He has won numerous awards and accumulated legions of fans worldwide, resulting in mass hysteria from adoring fans and intense interest from the media, which ultimately propelled his career to the dizzy heights of super stardom. In the following article I will attempt to do justice to this high achieving individual, who has touched people from all walks of life with his talent, and captured the

imaginations of fans globally. Tony Bonner’s spectacular rise to fame is an intriguing saga filled with many emotional stories and tumultuous events that have ultimately changed the destiny of his life.

Anthony Frederick Bonner (Tony) was born in the Sydney suburb of Fairlight in 1943. He started his theatrical journey in the early 60’s working at the ABC and various theatres in Sydney. It was during this time he was able to showcase his formidable talent as an actor, and make his explosive debut in the stage production of ‘’The sentimental bloke.’’ Tony’s inspiring performance consequently resulted in a brief appearance in the 1966

Catherine’s Column feature film ‘’There a Weird Mob’’ which consequently secured his future as an actor. In 1968 Tony was cast as helicopter pilot ‘’Jerry King’’ on the Australian television series Skippy, followed by appearances in numerous local productions including The Box, Matlock Police, Division 4, Cop Shop and Carson’s Law.

He then travelled to London, and appeared in various feature films including the 1970 classic ‘’You Can’t Win ‘Em All’’ alongside movie legends Tony Curtis and Charles Bronson. The movie was filmed in Malta, Turkey and Africa.

Bonner, then went on to achieve enormous commercial success in 1985, playing Captain Harold Armstrong in the critically acclaimed and huge ratings success, The Classic MiniSeries ’’ ANZACS.’’ Tony’s passion for the role, coupled with the calibre of his mesmerising performance was undeniable. Resulting in rave reviews which, consequently secured him a place in Australian Acting History. Tony’s star was rising rapidly, his appearance in blockbusters ‘’The Light Horseman’’ Quigley Down under’’ and ‘’The Man from Snowy River’’ created enormous fan interest, resulting in public fascination, which ultimately transformed him into a media magnet. However while Tony’s star was rising, his personal life was spiralling out of control.

In 1970 he had a guest role in one episode of the hit television series The Persuaders starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. Ironically, during this time JAMES BOND Producer, Albert ‘’Cubby’’ Broccoli was looking for a new James Bond and requested that both Roger Moore and Tony Bonner fly to LA for auditions. Unfortunately, Bonner attributed his low self-esteem battle at the time, as to why he did not attend the audition. Needless to say Roger Moore then dominated the big screen as the world’s most famous spy ‘’James Bond’’ seven times. Low self-esteem was not the only issue that Bonner was struggling with at the time. He had also been battling alcoholism since the age of fourteen, and his demons continued to haunt him daily.

Fortunately by the late 1980’s Tony retreated to a Melbourne Rehabilitation Clinic and won the battle with alcohol, and has been sober for 30years.

Over the years, Bonner has endured many physical and mental battles. In 2005 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a huge battle that he again miraculously won. Recalling that dreadful time, Tony insists that ‘’I have been in a battle field

most of my life.’’ However in true ‘’optimistic Tony Bonner Style’’ he now mentors prostate cancer patients and their partners on the

importance of beating the odds and survival.

The Truth about Australia The map illustrates how large Australia is compared to other countries

'extended holiday' and became Australians. The changes are subtle, but deep, caused by the mind-stretching expanses of nothingness and eerie quiet, where a person can sit perfectly still and look deep inside themselves to the core of their essence, their reasons for being, and the necessity of checking inside their boots every morning for fatal surprises. They also picked up the most finely tuned sense of irony in the world, and the Aboriginal gift for making up stories. Be warned. There is also the matter of the beaches. Australian beaches are simply the nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually venturing into the sea will have to contend with sharks, stinging jellyfish, stonefish (a fish which sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be a rock and has venomous barbs sticking out of its back that will kill just from the pain) and surfboarders. However, watching a beach sunset is worth the risk. As a result of all this hardship, dirt, thirst and wombats, you would expect Australians to be a dour lot. Instead, they are genial, jolly, cheerful and always willing to share a kind word with a stranger. Faced with insurmountable odds and impossible problems, they smile disarmingly and look for a stick. Major engineering feats have been performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string and mud.

"Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognizable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge into the girting sea. Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight", proving that not only are they covering up a more Frightening theory but they can't spell either. The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other landmasses and sovereign lands are classified as continent, island or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this.

The second confusing thing about Australia is the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep. It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all. But even the spiders won't go near the sea. Any visitors should be careful to check inside boots (before putting them on), under toilet seats (before sitting down) and generally everywhere else. A stick is very useful for this task. The last confusing thing about Australia is the inhabitants. A short history: Sometime around 40,000 years ago some people arrived in boats from the north. They ate all the available food, and a lot of them died. The ones who survived learned respect for the balance of nature, man's proper place in the scheme of things, and spiders. They settled in and spent a lot of the intervening time making up strange stories.

Then, around 200 years ago, Europeans arrived in boats from the north. More accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few deranged people in charge. They tried to plant their crops in autumn (failing to take account of the reversal of the seasons), ate all their food, and a lot of them died.

About then the sheep arrived, and have been treasured ever since. It is interesting to note here that the Europeans always consider themselves vastly superior to any other race they encounter, since they can lie, cheat, steal and litigate (marks of a civilized culture they say), whereas all the Aboriginals can do is happily survive being left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert, equipped with a stick. Eventually, the new lot of people stopped being Europeans on 42

Alone of all the races on earth, they seem to be free from the 'Grass is greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome, and roundly proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the other side of that fence. They call the land "Oz" or "Godzone" (a verbal contraction of "God's Own Country"). THE IRRITATING THING ABOUT THIS IS THEY MAY BE RIGHT. TIPS TO SURVIVING AUSTRALIA Don't ever put your hand down a hole for any reason WHATSOEVER.

The beer is stronger than you think, regardless of how strong you think it is. Always carry a stick.

Air-conditioning is imperative.

Do not attempt to use Australian slang unless you are a trained linguist and extremely good in a fist fight. Wear thick socks.

Take good maps. Stopping to ask directions only works when there are people nearby If you leave the urban areas, carry several litres of water with you at all times, or you will die. And don't forget a stick. Even in the most embellished stories told by Australians, there is always a core of truth that it is unwise to ignore.

HOW TO IDENTIFY AUSTRALIANS They waddle when they walk due to the 53 expired petrol discount vouchers stuffed in their wallet or purse. They pronounce Melbourne as "Melbin".

They think it makes perfect sense to decorate highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep etc.

They think "Woolloomooloo" is a perfectly reasonable name for a place, that "Wagga Wagga" can be abbreviated to "Wagga", but "Woy Woy" can't be called "Woy". Their hamburgers will contain beetroot. Apparently it's a must-have. They don't think it's summer until the steering wheel is too hot to handle. They believe that all train timetables are works of fiction.

Teen star kept singing when Long Tan erupted Daily Telegraph

“As we flew over the battle, the mood in the chopper was very sombre,” Thompson said. “There were hundreds of red lights below us and we knew they were tracer lights and that the Australian soldiers were being fired at.”

The events are the focus of a new film Danger Close: The Battle Of Long Tan starring Travis Fimmell, Richard Roxburgh and Daniel Webber, out on August 8. At the time Thompson was asked to go to Vietnam, little was known about the atrocities that would later flood newspaper and television reporting.

She had packed three dresses to wear on stage with a few pairs of nylon stockings. But it wasn’t until she arrived in Vietnam in August 1966 that Patricia “Little Pattie” Thompson realised it was going to be too hot to wear nylons. Her clothing was one of many things the 17-year-old entertainer, who had shot to fame in 1963 with the hit He’s My Blond Headed, Stompie Wompie, Real Gone Surfer Boy, was unprepared for when she arrived in Nui Dat. She was there to sing for the Australian troops as part of an entertainment troupe that also included Col Joye and the Joy Boys.

But if her arrival in Vietnam was exciting for the young Sydneysider, her evacuation on the day the Battle of Long Tan broke out a few kilometres away, would go down in history. Long Tan became the most recognised Australian battle of the Vietnam War, ultimately claiming 18 lives, with 24 wounded.

Thompson was one of hundreds of Australian performers to travel to South Vietnam to entertain the troops. But her story is perhaps one of the most amazing, in part due to her age (she was the youngest female to perform in Vietnam) but also because of how close the pretty teen singer came to the war zone. “We were doing three shows in Nui Dat on that day,” Thompson said yesterday of the day the battle of Long Tan started. “We could hear the noise that we all knew was gunfire in a nearby rubber plantation, but it wasn’t until the third

show in the afternoon that we could hear explosions as well as gunfire. “We kept performing because no one had told us to stop, but I could see several officers leave the area, I knew instinctively something was going on. Our escort, Major Don Chappell, did the fingers-across-the-throat signal for us to stop the show and we were rushed off stage. Jeeps came in through the torrential rain with sirens blasting and all hell broke loose. “We were whisked away in a chopper. The next day Col and I visited the 36th Evacuation Hospital to chat with the injured from the battle and hear their stories. These boys reminded me so much of my brother, they were his age. But I still don’t think I realised the significance of that battle. “The importance of Long Tan came to me later when I was in Iraq in 2005 or 2006. Every time I met a US soldier, they would put me up on a pedestal when I told them I was in Vietnam at the time of Long Tan. They told me they studied that battle in the military and that it was the best fought battle and that only Australians could have fought it. It made me feel so proud.”

The battle of Long Tan broke out when the Vietcong attacked the new Australian base of Nui Dat early on August 17, 1966. Australian troops, in an attempt to locate the insurgents, ended up in a rubber plantation in the village of Long Tan. At 4pm on the 18th, the exact time Thompson and Joye were being evacuated just four kilometres away, the Australian troops came under heavy fire.

“I still remember the day I was at home with my mother and someone from the government called to ask my parent’s permission for me to go to Vietnam,” Thompson said. “None of us knew much about the war, it was early days, the barrage of media coverage came later. All I knew was that some of our soldiers were in this place called Vietnam and we were helping the Americans, that was the line.

“Dad said no at first but he relented and my parents were told I would be well looked after, get three meals a day and plenty of sleep. It took three months to prepare for the trip with briefings at Victoria Barracks and heaps of health checks. “A Daily Telegraph photographer was at the barracks one day when I had to have 13 needles and he kept saying ‘Smile for the camera’, which I did through gritted teeth.” While Thompson didn’t return to Vietnam again during the war, others continued to make the trek to help lift the morale of the soldiers. Singer and actor Lorrae Desmond, who would go on to win a Gold Logie and work on shows like Number 96 and A Country Practice, made five tours to the war zone between 1967 and 1971. Stage and television performer Ian Turpie, who would later be best known as the host of The Price Is Right, performed in the Christmas concert in Bien Hoa in 1965. And singer/songwriter Normie Rowe, who was conscripted to national service and was stationed in Vietnam for most of 1969, would often jump up on stage with his fellow performers.

Only one entertainer failed to return from Vietnam. Cathy Wayne, a young Sydney singer was performing at a US Marine Corps base in 1967 when she was shot in the chest mid-song and died. Mornington Bowling Club Inc Lawn Bowls was introduced to the Mornington Peninsula when the MORNINGTON BOWLING CLUB was established in 1917. The site, once an aboriginal camp site is located on a cliff top overlooking Port Phillip Bay

the Frankston foreshore.

This club was formed on the 1st June 1917 and opened with a four rink green in November of that year, but the task of hand watering by watering can proved to be too big a job for the members and the club closed. A permanent water supply was not available until 1921.

It was not until nine years later in 1947 that a fourth club was established on the foreshore at Rosebud opposite the main shopping centre. The founding President and Secretary of that club Mr F E Wood & Mr G H Richardson then went on to serve as the founding President & Secretary respectively of the Peninsula Bowling Association in which in turn was founded on the 25th September 1951.

Because of the poor quality of both roads and transport of the day, bowlers living at the southern end of the Peninsula found it infinitely more convenient to travel across the bay by ferry to play at the Queenscliff Bowls Club, one of the oldest clubs in Victoria having been established in 1883, just three years after the formation of the Victorian Bowls Association.

This period saw yet another nine clubs established: – LONG ISLAND – 1962, YAMALA PARK – 1964, FRANKSTON RSL – 1964, RSL PARK – 1965, MOUNT ELIZA – 1960, CARRINGTON PARK – 1968, ROSEBUD COUNTRY CLUB – 1968, KARINGAL – 1969, and ROSEBUD RSL – 1977. In 1970 the FRANKSTON BOWLS CLUB was renamed the CITY OF FRANKSTON BOWLING CLUB and in 1978 was relocated to its present location. This site was developed into a magnificent complex and was chosen to be the host venue for the 1980 World Bowls Championships.

Is Apparently Helping To Make Garden Bowls Cool The Duchess of Sussex has even visited a bowling green after becoming interested in the 'elegant' game If you notice more people playing lawn bowls in the coming weeks, then you have Meghan Markle to thank for the ultimate endorsement. It’s been reported that, since moving to Frogmore Cottage, the Duchess of Sussex has become fascinated with the English pastime - and has even made a surprise visit to the Royal Household Bowling Club (which is situated near her home on the Queen's Windsor estate). It’s believed Meghan garnered an interest in the game after watching it from her bedroom window, so wanted to stop by and chat to the players. According to the Sunday Express, a source said, ‘Meghan remarked to the two players how elegant the game looked.’ However, unfortunately the source did not confirm whether the royal had a try at the game herself.

Obviously, Meghan isn’t the first of the royals to pop by a bowling club, as the Queen made a visit to the Brimfield and Little Hereford Bowling Club in 2013. Brimfield player David Evans said at the time, 'She watched us play for around 30 minutes in all, there was quite a lot of pressure on us to perform in front of her. It is an amazing coincidence she turned up, I heard she has only been to the bowls green around four times in the last 18 years.' Ash Barty AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TREASURE AND DARLING OF THE COURT, ASH BARTY HAS RECENTLY BECOME AUSTRALIA’S FIRST WOMAN IN 43 YEARS TO ACHIEVE THE WORLD RANKING OF ‘’NUMBER ONE’’ IN WOMEN’S SINGLES, AFTER WINNING ‘’THE BIRMINGHAM CLASSIC AND ‘’THE FRENCH OPEN’’ EARLIER THIS YEAR. Her phenomenal success has now eclipsed ‘’seven-time grand slam’’ winner and Indigenous trail blazer Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s amazing achievements.

After her win, Barty paid tribute to Evonne declaring ‘’Its amazing how Evonne created this path for Indigenous tennis in Australia and I think now it’s becoming more nationwide.’’ Prompting an elated Evonne to respond, that Barty’s victory in Paris was ‘’A joy to watch.’’

Barty is a proud Indigenous woman, who has embraced her heritage. Her passion for tennis and the Indigenous community is legendary. She is also the National Indigenous Ambassador for ‘’Tennis Australia,’’ which promotes Indigenous participation in tennis for men and women.

Ashleigh Barty (Ash) was born in 1996 in Ipswich, Qld. Her father is an Indigenous Australian and her mother is of English heritage. Barty began playing tennis at the age of four, under the strict supervision of her long- time coach

Jim Joyce. She began showing tremendous promise during her junior years, which consequently resulted in her career flourishing to herculean proportions. She subsequently reached a career-high ranking of ‘’number two’’ after winning the girls singles title at Wimbledon in 2011. Coach Jim Joyce has since recalled his reluctance to typically ‘’not train children as young as Barty.’’ However made an exception, because of Barty’s unrelenting focus and her exceptional hand-eye co- ordination

In 2014 Barty announced, she was taking a break from professional tennis. It later transpired, she wanted to experience life as a normal teenager. However, in 2015 after a short hiatus, she joined The Western Suburbs District Cricket Club. Barty played 13 matches, scoring one century and averaging 42.4 runs while taking 8 wickets. The club won the Leagues Grand Final with Barty unsurprisingly achieving the club’s ‘’top scorer’’ award.

TWO BLONDES DON’T MAKE A RIGHT OR DO THEY? THE GLOBALIZATION OF THE GROWING TREND OF COUPLING BORIS JOHNSON AND DONALD TRUMP TOGETHER AS ‘’BROTHERS IN CHAOS’’ OR ‘’THE TERRIBLE TWO’’ SEEMS TO BE GAINING MOMENTUM, AND REACHING MAMMOTH PROPORTIONS. IN THE WAKE OF THE TWO UNCONVENTIONAL LEADERS BEING CONSTANTLY COMPARED TO EACH OTHER, IT HAS BECOME APPARENT, THE STRIKING SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE TWO ARE MIND BOGGLING, WITH MANY QUESTIONING THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THE TERRIBLE TWOSOME SEEM TO HAVE A LOT MORE IN COMMON THAN JUST THEIR QUESTIONABLE HAIR COLOUR. Both Johnson and Trump are from white upper- class privileged backgrounds. Trump was born in New York on the 14th June, 1946 and the family were members of Manhattan’s wealthy elite. Ironically,

Johnson was also born in New York on the 19th June, 1964. However, his family were wealthy English Liberal intellectuals. Therefore, both leaders attended the best schools, resulting in Johnson graduating from Eton, which is regarded as the most prestigious independent boarding school in Britain, while Trump graduated from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, also regarded as one of the best colleges in the US.

In 2016, President elect Donald Trump promised to deliver ‘’Brexit times 10.’’ Consequently, since entering the white house, the US has erupted into historic highs and unmentionable lows, leading to government congressional gridlock with pro-trade republicans being led by an ‘’America First mentality’’ causing many internationalists to resign or face being fired. Fast forward to 2019, newly elected British Prime minister, Boris Johnson promises to deliver a Brexit ‘’Deal or no deal’’ by 31st October,2019. Causing widespread disharmony with colleagues and dividing the nation. Johnson’s plan of negotiating a new withdrawal agreement with the EU (European Union) was met with fierce resistance by some senior cabinet ministers, resulting in twenty one MP’s being unceremoniously kicked out of the parliamentary Conservative Party. It later transpired, the MP’s sided with the opposition to pass a law, designed to prevent Britain from leaving the EU without a divorce deal.

It is no coincidence the two leaders Johnson and Trump, who incidentally share the same star sign (Gemini) are morphing into carbon copies of one another, mentally and physically. Historical data reveals that both men thrive on being the centre of attention and are equally power-hungry. Both leaders also have similar leadership styles, with many questioning their complete disregard for accuracy, as another common factor linking the two human headlines together.

Both Johnson and Trump also seem to share many other Gemini traits which include:(1) An impulsive and indecisive nature, coupled with an overwhelming ambition to succeed against all odds.

(2) A desire to be liked and appraised, while having little or no respect for diplomacy, when sharing their opinion with others. Choosing instead, to dismiss colleagues who disagree with their policies. (3) An obsession with being the centre of attention at all times, and an overwhelming desire to cultivate a larger-than- life image. Johnson recently paid homage to Trump by promising to ‘’Make the UK the greatest country on earth.’’ Hence eclipsing Trump’s now infamous catch phrase ‘’Lets make America great again.’’

Only time will tell if the ‘’bromance’’ between Johnson and Trump will translate through to the next election and survive the current Brexit debacle. Story courtesy of Catherine Colusso

BOWLING&LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE ARE CELEBRATING AN EVENING WITH PATRICIA WARD KELLY, BY GIVING AWAY FREE TICKETS TO ‘’GENE KELLY THE LEGACY’’ PATRICIA WARD KELLY, wife and official biographer of late American icon Gene Kelly, is bringing her one woman presentation to Australia for the first time in February 2020. Patricia will be presenting an intimate glimpse into the life of legendary actor and dancer Gene Kelly. The tribute highlights the grace and splendour of a bygone era, combined with film clips, personal memorabilia and insights from hours of interviews and conversations with her husband. Gene Kelly is best known for his performance in the 1952 musical ‘’SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’’ which was voted number one musical of all time. Kelly’s amazing performance projected an undeniable luminosity on screen which showcased his remarkable talent as a performer. His performance captured the imagination of fans worldwide, resulting in unprecedented commercial success.

Patricia Ward and Gene Kelly met in 1985, when Kelly was hosting a documentary about the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in Washington D.C.

Ward, an academic and Colorado College graduate, was working as a writer on the project at the time. It was during this period that a smitten Gene Kelly invited Ward to California to write his memoirs. An intense five year courtship followed, which subsequently led to Ward becoming Kelly’s third and final wife. They married in 1990, Kelly was 77 and Ward 31.

I recently had the pleasure of taking a trip down memory lane with his widow, the articulate and very

charismatic Mrs Patricia Ward Kelly. During the interview, I found myself engulfed by nostalgia, while being transported through time

to the golden years of Hollywood. I listened mesmerised to Patricia’s stories about Hollywood icons such as Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Frank Sinatra and Gregory Peck and found her memory of dates and events astounding. This of course, prompted me to curiously ask for her recollections of her first meeting with Gene Kelly.

She fondly remembers the unforgettable encounter as ‘’surreal’’ and ‘’life changing’’ and adds that he was ‘’very handsome and well dressed.’’ I then take the opportunity to quiz her about the 46 year age difference between them. Her response of ‘’I did not notice and there was nothing old about him’’ indicates the deep connection they both shared. She then assures me ‘’she fell in love with the man not the icon.’’

Kelly and Ward were together for 10 years, he instantly became her mentor, and consequently shared his wealth of knowledge with her, by introducing her to different people and cultures all over the world. She then describes Gene as ‘’terribly, terribly romantic’’ and adds that Gene’s favourite song was ‘’Young at heart.’’ I then ask her why she had not remarried. Her unsurprising reply of ‘’Because he was a hard act to follow’’ leaves no doubt in my mind that their love story, was able to transcend age discrimination and conquer all obstacles that came their way. Patricia’s legacy is to keep the memory of Gene Kelly alive, by making sure that his contribution to the world ‘’does not evaporate with time.’’

In 2012 Patricia started touring the world with the presentation she created to honour the memory and achievements of Gene Kelly. Her one woman tribute ‘’ Gene Kelly the legacy’’ has showcased all over the world, and will be appearing for the first time in Australia in 2020. It was my absolute pleasure interviewing Patricia and reminiscing about the passion and splendour of the glory days of Hollywood. SYDNEY STATE THEATRE 12/2/2020
