Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.

Excel/UltraMax is a 36 stitch 10mm pile height synthetic surface, widely used throughout Australia by KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass in the construction of bowling greens. Manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, the Excel/ UltraMax is exclusive to Green Planet Grass

and KCL Sports in Australia.

Jon Hastings from KCL Sports pioneered the use of polyethylene springlock yarns for the DryMax Pro synthetic bowling surface. Between them, KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have installed nearly 300 synthetic bowling greens. The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The

Excel/UltraMax has been used in retirement and lifestyle villages for half size greens and in full size installations for bowling Clubs. As well as the Excel/UltraMax, KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass also offer a range of 12mm surfaces.

Both Green Planet Grass in Western Australia and KCL Sports on the east coast, offer a full maintenance programme to keep your synthetic grass bowling greens in peak condition for optimal performance and to extend the life of the green. This can include thatching to lift the pile, algae treatment, sand level adjustment and re-rolling of the surface.

FACTS • Each year over 33,000 people in Australia die from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). • This is different from a heart attack… where symptoms often present with shortness of breath, chest pain and feeling of sweatiness. • SCA occurs without any symptoms.. the person just collapses. A SCA occurs when the heart goes into VT, Ventricular Tachycardia….(rapid heart rate.. heart beats too quickly and struggles to go back into normal heart rhythm) or VF Ventricular Fibrillation ( the heart goes into chaotic electrical activity… often described as a “bag of wriggling worms) If you don’t correct VT or VF, by using a cardiac defibrliiator.. the patient will die. CPR assists in keeping the heart muscle pumping blood and oxygen

around the body… but it’s the defibrillator… a reset button that corrects the irregularity into sinus rhythm.

• An Ambulance average response time is 19-30 minutes in metropolitan areas (even though they target for 8 minutes)

• Outside Metropolitan areas and response time is much longer

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Australia

FROM koalas at Taronga Zoo to meeting Australia’s biggest Prince Harry fan, this was day one of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 16-day tour of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The Royal couple’s first engagement was at Admiralty House where they met representatives of the 18 countries competing in the Invictus Games starting this weekend.

While there, they opened a new science facility before quickly dashing to the Opera House where thousands of fans were waiting.

Baby Sussex received his or her first presents with a distinctly Australian flavour - baby ugg boots and a stuffed kangaroo with a joey in the pouch - from Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove. Once in a century!! Freak of Navigation

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters Of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia.

The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the result to the master, Captain John Phillips. The Warrimoo's position was LAT.0 degrees 31' N and LON.179 degrees30'W.

The date was 30 December 1899. First Mate Payton broke in....."You know what this means.....we're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line" Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving this navigational freak of a lifetime.

He called his navigators to the bridge to check and double check the ship's position.

He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark.

Then he adjusted the engine speed.

The calm weather and clear night worked in his favour. At midnight the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crosses the International Date Line.

The consequences of this bizarre position were several. The bow of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere and the middle of summer.

The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere and in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.

Forward it was 1 January 1900.

This ship was therefore not only in two different days, two different months, two different years and two different seasons, but in two different centuries all at the same time.

THE ROYAL VISIT

High Tea The tradition of High Tea began in the mid1700s as an afternoon meal for working men and women and was taken standing up or sitting on tall stools, thus ‘high’. Gradually, this afternoon meal became more known as an important event on the social calendars for Ladies and Gentlemen, rather than a meal for the working class person.

For the ‘Leisure Classes’, High Tea served a practical purpose, allowing Ladies and Gentleman the opportunity of a substantial meal before attending the theatre, or playing cards. In 1754, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, had the idea of placing meat and other fillings between two slices of bread, thus creating the first sandwich. High Tea at NSW Parliament remains a highly popular occasion for members of Parliament, visiting dignitaries, consul representatives and members of the Royal family. www.parliamentarycatering.com.au

BCiB Jackaroos lure English world champ to Tactical Coach role The BCiB Australian Jackaroos will benefit from local knowledge at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, following the appointment of English and Scottish spearhead Andy Thomson MBE as Tactical Coach. Thomson, one of the Northern Hemisphere's most prodigious international players, has relinquished his position as English Selector to take up the post with Bowls Australia's highperformance team, in a newly created role that will help shape the nation's success abroad. Steeped in success, Thomson, who retired from English indoor international duties last month following 38 years of service, has claimed six World Bowls Tour world indoor titles, and was part of England's men's fours victory at the 1996 World Bowls Championships.

While Thomson will commence immediately in the advisory role, his actual commitments are concentrated around times when the BCiB Jackaroos are training or competing in the United Kingdom. National Coach Steve Glasson said that Thomson was the obvious candidate for the position, which has been developed to play an instrumental role in the Jackaroos on-green performances at the next Commonwealth Games. "History underlines the fact that Australia's success in the UK does not mirror that of performances in the Southern Hemisphere, and this is an exciting challenge and opportunity we face," Glasson said.

"In order to improve our performance, particularly our tactical prowess and style of play in the UK, we have sought the involvement of an iconic, respected, experienced and proven campaigner in both competition and coaching.

"ANDY WAS THE OBVIOUS PICK AND WE ARE DELIGHTED TO SECURE HIS SERVICES TO ASSIST US IN MEETING OUR POTENTIAL AND ACHIEVING OUR GOALS."

Thomson was appreciative of the opportunity to help guide Australia's success abroad and said he was eager to get stuck into the challenge.

"I am delighted to accept the position with Bowls Australia and very 16

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

excited to be part of the coaching team," Thomson said.

"I have known National Coach Steve Glasson for many years and it will be a privilege to work with him.

"I have always admired the professionalism and dedication of all the Australian Squads that I have seen in the past, and I am looking forward to working with many of the best players in the world. "I know the team are aware of the challenges they will face during the next few years and I look forward to being part of a successful team."

Thomson joins the man at the helm, National Coach Steve Glasson, and National Assistant Coach Gary Willis as the architects charged with the future success of Australian Jackaroos. While Thomson's appointment is evident of the preparations the trio, alongside the High-Performance staff and National Selectors, are taking ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, immediate focus is undoubtedly directed to ensuring success at the Gold Coast 2020 World Bowls Championships. Reduce your risk of dementia Almost one in 10 Australians aged over 65 have dementia, but by 85, it is one in three. And while once it was thought dementia was a late-life disease that couldn’t be prevented, we now know that’s wrong. “You really have to be thinking about protecting your brain all through your life. It can be hard to think about being 80 when you are only 50 but creating an ageing well life-plan well ahead of retirement will support you in the years to come” says Professor Anstey.m

Research has shown that there are actions you can take to reduce your risk of dementia, and these need to be incorporated into your healthy living plan as early as possible. Critically, during your 50-60’s, you need to be mindful of: 1. Weight and keeping yourself fit 2. Regular exercise like Bowls

NeuRA is leading the way on Ageing Well for Life, with the appointment of leading Australian scientists Professor Karrin Anstey who heads up the new Ageing Well centre. Prof Anstey is also Australia’s representative to the World Health Organisation on dementia. Waiting until your 60s and thinking, ‘I don’t want to get dementia, I’d better look at my risk factors’ isn’t a great plan says, Professor Kaarin Anstey.

JOHN PAUL YOUNG THE VANDA & YOUNG SONGBOOK

Encore Tour Love was certainly in the air at North Sydney Leagues Club, Friday the 12th October 2018 when John Paul Young and The Allstars appeared in the highly anticipated ‘The Vanda & Young Songbook Encore Tour.’

This electrifying show explored the journey of extraordinary musical talent and incredible song writing duo George Young and Harry Vanda. Together they wrote and created classic masterpieces for the cream of Australian music icons such as John Paul Young, The Easybeats, AC/DC, Ted Mulry and more. This awe-inspiring production is a spectacular celebration of their phenomenal success and their incredible achievements in the music industry, which left the audience exhilarated, nostalgic and engulfed in the midst of musical euphoria. The show transported you through decades of mega hits with legendary singer and music power house John Paul Young, who took the audience behind the scenes with stories about the songs and there making, capturing the passion and raw emotion of 20

such classics as FRIDAY ON MY MIND, FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN, EVIE 1,2&3 HEY ST. PETER, I HATE THE MUSIC, YESTERDAY’S HERO and mega hit LOVE IS IN THE AIR. 2009 Aria (Australian Recording Industry Association) recipient John Paul Young became one of the biggest Australian stars of the 70’s and his career has accelerated nonstop into the 21 century. Making him one of Australia’s most successful artists of all time with over 4 million records sold worldwide.

His first involvement in music began in 1967 when he formed a band named ‘Elm Tree’ with schoolmates. The band entered the NSW heats of Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds and managed to make the Sydney finals. However, John’s solo career had already started to gain momentum. He appeared in the Melbourne production of The Jesus Christ Revolution, followed by an outstanding performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Super Star, alongside future super stars John English, Doug Parkinson, Stevie Wright,

Marcia Hines and Reg Livermore. His career was also boosted significantly by his regular appearances as a performer and guest host on the ABC TV series Countdown between 1974 and 1987. This resulted in public recognition and adoration from fans around the country. The 1978 release of the Vanda and Young song ‘Love is in the Air’ was a mammoth turning point in Young’s career, and created mass hysteria amongst fans around the world. Resulting in phenomenal record sales and propelling him even further into the spot light and super stardom almost overnight. The staggering success of ‘Love is in the Air’ which became JPY’s signature tune ensured that Young has remained in the spotlight for over five decades A new version of the song was featured as a theme song for Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 debut film Strictly Ballroom giving John Paul Young another massive career revival. World War I: Australia Fired the First Shots

The Guardian newspaper’s headline on 4 August 1914.

The first shots of World War I were fired in Melbourne, Australia, on August 5, 1914.

Cocos Islands in November 1914.

They were fired by a coastal artillery battery at Port Phillip Heads when the German merchant vessel SS Pfalz attempted to slip out of port before the declaration of war was made known. The Government of Great Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, following Germany’s declaration of war on Russia, France and Belgium, but the news was not received in Australia until the following day.

For Australia, the First World War remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. Globally, more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized. Over nine million combatants and seven million civilians died as a result of the war.

The battery fired warning shots across the German ship’s bow when the ship ignored signals to stop. After an altercation between the ship’s captain and her Australian pilot, she was taken back to Hobson’s Bay under armed guard.

SS Pfalz was renamed Boorara and fitted out as a transport, twice surviving German torpedo attacks during the course of the war. She later assisted in the repatriation of Australian troops in 1919.

At the start of the war, the Royal Australian Navy was a small but formidable force, consisting of 3,800 personnel, 16 ships including the battlecruiser Australia, the light cruisers Sydney and Melbourne, three destroyers and two submarines. The light cruiser Brisbane and three destroyers were under construction, and a small fleet of auxiliary ships was being maintained. The Royal Australian Navy served under the British Admiralty in diverse areas of the world, including German New Guinea, the Cocos Islands, East Africa and the Dardanelles. The Royal Australian Navy made a significant contribution early in the war when Sydney destroyed the German raider SMS Emden near the

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. However as a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, AdiposeDerived Stem Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the stem cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to

look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, chat with Daphne Dunne. Picture: Paul Edwards/AP

It was during this part of the day they our hearts melted when Prince Harry was reunited with Daphne Dunne. The 98-year-old war veteran famously stole a kiss from His Royal Highness when he visited in 2015. And she wasn’t left disappointed not only sharing another special moment with Prince Harry but also meeting Meghan for the first time.

“CONGRATULATIONS, I THINK THAT’S MARVELOUS,” SAID DAPHNE TO MEGHAN. “IT’S JUST WHAT HARRY NEEDS.”

“I’ve seen your shoes, they’re very cool,” chimed in Harry. “Have you dyed your hair a shade of pink?”

“It’s fantastic,” added Meghan. “I’m so happy to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you. All good things.” “I think it’s wonderful, the two of you,” Daphne replied.

She kissed both the Duke and Duchess and gave them cards and flowers as gifts.

“Oh what’s this? This is fantastic,” Meghan said. “Enjoy the rest of the day. Hopefully next time we see you we’ll have a little one with us.” Continued on page 39>>

CATHERINE’S COLUMN

THE RISE AND RISE OF

Scott Morrison

However, the new prime minister and former treasurer has pledged ‘continuity’ rather than a departure in any major policy, which includes the very controversial subject of the National Energy Guarantee. This issue alone has already divided the nation, with the new prime minister pledging his support and making the energy crisis a priority on his agenda. He has also sent a clear message of support for a multicultural Australia. Strongly declaring ‘We’re on your side.’ Unlike his rival and nemesis Peter Dutton, who vowed recently to cut migrant intake. Morrison has also pledged to rectify the long list of casualties and the drama that resulted from the in-house fighting that crippled the nation. Morrison is the son of a policeman who later became a mayor. He grew up in a tight-knit Christian family in the suburb of Bronte, and has declared on numerous occasions that his two passions in life are. His devotion to the evangelical church and his love for the Cronulla Sharks Rugby League team. He is a devoted family man and met the love of his life, wife Jenny when they were teenagers through the church. They married at age 21. Their two gorgeous daughters Abbey and Lily are the result of multiple IVF cycles which Mr. Morrison has described as God’s blessing for his wife’s faithfulness.

Scott Morrison has reached the pinnacle of political hierarchy by snatching the top job and becoming Australia’s 30th Prime Minister at the tender age of fifty. The response from the Australian public has been overwhelmingly positive. Mr. Morrison was sworn in as Prime Minister by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove on the 24th August 2018. This outcome now clears the way for a dramatic overhaul of the entire government, which

34

will hopefully restore goodwill amongst senior members of the ministry, the liberal party, and reunite the nation once more.

Mr Morrison successfully defeated hot favourite and political fire cracker, former home affairs Minister Peter Dutton, by 45 to 40 votes, after Mr Dutton instigated a leadership challenge, bringing the liberal party to a grinding halt and causing a political crisis. Ending a week of what could only be described as a ‘blood bath’ and ‘open war-fare’ between senior members of the liberal party. The unexpected win by Mr. Morrison ultimately resulted in the shock dethroning and humiliation of Prime Minister Malcom Turnbul and the destabilization of the Australian government.

THE FATE OF SCOTT MORRISON AND THE LIBERAL PARTY IS CURRENTLY IN THE LAP OF THE GODS. TIME WILL DETERMINE WHETHER THEY ARE ABLE TO SURVIVE THE POLITICAL UPHEAVAL AND THE ENDURING UNPREDICTABILITY OF POLITICS WHICH COULD CHANGE AT ANY TIME. HOWEVER PUBLIC OPINION AND LIBERAL MP’S ARE ALREADY INDICATING THAT ‘DOWN TO EARTH’ MORRISON IS THE BEST CHOICE TO LEAD AND INTENSIFY PRESSURE ON HUMAN HEADLINE AND OPPOSITION LEADER BILL SHORTEN FOR THE NEXT ELECTION. From the operating theatre to : Jim Dwyer’s the remarkable story

bowling green

Bowls, a sport that fails to discriminate. That sentiment has never rung truer than in the case of Jim Dwyer.

Having been involved in the sport since 2003, beginning at Cutheringa Bowls Club in Townsville, Jim's position with the Royal Australian Airforce saw him later playing in both Brisbane and Darwin before returning to reside in Townsville and once again play at Cutheringa. In August 2017, while performing routine work on a runway in Townsville in his role with the Airforce, the 57-year-old was involved in a gruesome accident, with lifechanging consequences.

After what he described as a "bloody big machine" fell on him after he was knocked off-balance while working on a truck, his right leg below the knee was immediately amputated while his left leg narrowly avoided the same outcome, with damage only to his left foot. The result would be a bionic limb for his right leg and a left leg heavily damaged around the foot area.

"Wherever I went, I played bowls. It became a huge part of my life," he said.

"I was a very average bowler but I was just starting to hit my straps (before the accident)... I just wanted to become a regular first-grade bowler.

"I was sort of getting there too... Getting the odd game in first-grade and then back to second-grade and then back up to first-grade etc. "Things were really looking up for me before the accident."

In hospital for just over three months and having faced numerous operations to save his left foot, Jim was released just before Christmas and remarkably, 'wheeled' his way out onto the green by mid-late February. "The first thing I wanted to do when I got out was to have a beer and have a bowl. Obviously, that took a long time," he said.

"Queensland Sporting Wheelies organised for me to borrow a wheelchair until I could organise my own (which is still in the pipeline). "Everyone wanted me to come and have a few games. We had a very short night competition (at Cutheringa) here early in the year, so I actually played in that with a

lot of help.

Still learning to walk again and having endured yet another operation on his left foot just recently, Jim is adamant on gradually increasing his playing time on the green with an aim to participate in more social bowls, and even pennant down the track. "I don't think I'll ever be able to bowl from a normal stance because my left ankle is fused," he said.

"I can stand for small periods and walk short distances but there's no way known that I'd be able to walk for a game of bowls. "But that's what the chair is for... I should have my own (chair) in the next month or so." The story of Jim Dwyer is profound.

It's hair-raising and you'd have to be emotion-less not be left feeling inspired, while there's no doubt you'd be also left feeling a little guilty.

Jim's go-getting attitude following such a horrific moment in his life is a lesson to all, bowler and non-bowler, that absolutely anything is achievable with the right attitude. Courtesy of Bowls Australia

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Harry's Cafe de Wheels Harry's has served the likes of Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, Marlene Dietrich, Kerry Packer and, more recently, Sir Richard Branson, Russell Crowe, The story of 'Harry's Café de Wheels' goes back to the Depression years of the late 1930s.

With the world on the brink of a devastating war, an enterprising Sydneysider by the name of Harry Edwards opened a caravan café near the front gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard. Word spread quickly, with Harry's 'pie 'n' peas' and crumbed sausages soon becoming a popular part of the city's nightlife - keenly sought by sailors, soldiers, cabbies, starlets and coppers alike. Harry operated the caravan until 1938 when he enlisted in the AIF during WWII.

Upon his return in 1945, Harry realised that Sydney hadn't changed much and it was still almost impossible to get a good late-night feed, so he reopened and the caravan has been operating continuously ever since. The phrase 'Café de Wheels' came about as the city council of the day insisted that mobile

food caravans move a minimum of 12 inches a day. Harry dutifully obeyed, and thus the name was expanded to Harry's Café de Wheels. Simply known as 'Harry's' Harry operated the caravan for a further 30 years before selling the business to Alex Koronya in 1975. In December 2004, Harry's was classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and included on its Register. Per the National Trust of Australia, Harry's is a 'quintessential Sydney icon' and, in the Trust's opinion, falls within the 'Those places which are components of the natural or the cultural environment of Australia, that have aesthetic, historical, architectural, archaeological, scientific, or social significance or other special value for future generations, as well as for the present community.' As the years have passed, Harry's has become a 'must' for visiting celebrities. Harry's has served the likes of Frank

Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, Marelene Dietrich, Kerry Packer and, more recently, Sir Richard Branson, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Brook Shields, Pat Rafter, Olivia Newton-John, Jerry Lewis, Billy

Crystal, Pamela Anderson,

Sara O'Hare, Lachlan Murdoch, KerriAnne Kennerley, Adrian Greiner, Anthony Bourdain and Peter Blakely.

In 1974, chicken king Colonel Sanders stopped at Harry's and enjoyed the food so much that he ate three 'pies and peas'

while leaning on his walking stick in front of the caravan. Elton John has also been a visitor to Harry's over the years and held a press conference from inside Harry's during the 1970s. And then there's the album - in 1990, Peter Blakely released his debut album 'Harry's Café de Wheels' which went platinum. Harry's has become so popular with the celebrities that in 1991, Rupert Murdoch had pies shipped to Los Angeles

for an Australian-themed Oscars party. But you definitely don't have to be a celebrity to enjoy Harry's, just hungry.

Since its initial opening in the 1930s, Harry's has withstood the test of time. Harry's lets you enjoy authentic Aussie tucker while taking a trip back through history. Source Les Taylor

EXPERT TREATMENT FOR FOOT, KNEE and LEG PAIN Do you suffer FOOT, HEEL, KNEE or LEG PAIN? You’re not alone! Our feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most of our daily activities, so its no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can you do about it?

We asked the experts at Foot & Leg Pain Clinics to shed some light on common foot and leg concerns: - Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so its important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal podiatrist to assist.

- Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips. - Even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treatments including Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), prescription orthoses, stress and load management strategies.

- Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it’s important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine.

“By combining the very latest medically researched treatments with a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine, lower limb biomechanics and load management strategies we can assist stresses through joints and tissues, aid or eradicate pain, increase mobility, repair injuries and regenerate tissues – safely and naturally,” say Foot & Leg Pain Clinics founder, Dr. Paul Dowie. who is one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatrists and foot & leg pain experts. The RAF discovered that a 15 yearold ‘Gate Guard’ Grand Slam bomb – was actually LIVE!!!!

photographed sitting astride! …. Could it? …. Then everyone raced off to get the Station ARMO. He carefully scraped off many layers of paint and gingerly unscrewed the base plate.

Yes, you guessed it, live 1944 explosive filling! The beast was very gently lifted onto an RAF ‘Queen Mary’ low loader, using a much larger civvy crane (I often wonder what, if anything, they told the crane driver), then driven slowly under massive police escort to the coastal experimental range at Shoeburyness. There it was rigged for demolition, and when it ‘high ordered’, it proved in no uncertain terms to anyone within a ten mile radius that the filling was still very much alive!

Apparently when Lincolnshire County Council were widening the road past RAF Scampton’s main gate in about 1958, the ‘gate guards’ there had to be moved to make way for the new carriageway. Scampton was the WWII home of 617 Sqn, and said “gate guards” were a Lancaster…and a Grand Slam bomb. When they went to lift the Grand Slam, thought for years to just be an empty casing, with an RAF 8 Ton Coles Crane, it wouldn’t budge. “Oh, it must be filled with concrete” they said. Then somebody had a horrible thought …. No!….. Couldn’t be? … Not after all these years out here open to the public to climb over and be

Exhaustive investigations then took place, but nobody could find the long-gone 1944, 1945 or 1946 records which might have shown how a live 22,000 lb bomb became a gate guard for nearly the next decade and a half. Some safety distance calculations were done, however, about the effect of a Grand Slam detonating at ground level in the open. Apart from the entire RAF Station, most of the northern part of the City of Lincoln, including Lincoln Cathedral, which dates back to 1250, would have been flattened. The Grand Slam was a 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) earthquake bomb used by RAF Bomber Command against strategic targets during the Second World War. It was the most powerful non-atomic bomb used in the war. Known officially as the Bomb, Medium Capacity, 22,000 lb, it was a scaled-up version of the Tallboy bomb and closer to the original size that the bombs’ inventor, Barnes Wallis, had envisaged when he first developed his earthquake bomb idea. It was also nicknamed “Ten ton Tess”.

When the success [of the Tallboy bomb] was proved, Wallis designed a yet more powerful

weapon… This 22,000 lb. bomb did not reach us before the spring of 1945, when we used it with great effect against viaducts or railways leading to the Ruhr and also against several U-boat shelters. If it had been necessary, it would have been used against underground factories, and preparations for attacking some of these were well advanced when the war ended. —Sir Arthur Travers Harris (1947).

On 18 July 1943, work started on a larger version of the Tallboy bomb, which became the Grand Slam. As with the original Tallboy, the Grand Slam’s fins generated a stabilizing spin and the bomb had a thicker case than a conventional bomb, which allowed deeper penetration. After the hot molten Torpex was poured into the casing, the explosive took a month to cool and set. Like the Tallboy, because of the low rate of production and consequent high value of each bomb, aircrews were told to land with their unused bombs on board rather than jettison them into the sea if a sortie was aborted.

After release from the Avro Lancaster B.Mk 1 (Special) bomber, the Grand Slam would reach nearsupersonic speed, approaching 1,049 ft/s (320 m/s), 715 mph (1150 km/h). When it hit, it would penetrate deep underground before detonating. The resulting explosion could cause the formation of a camouflet (cavern) and shift the ground to undermine a target’s foundation. Unlike Tallboy, Grand Slam was originally designed to penetrate concrete roofs. Consequently, it was more effective against hardened targets than any existing bomb. The first Grand Slam was tested at the Ashley Walk Range in the New Forest, on 13 March 1945. By the end of the war, 42 Grand Slams had been dropped on active service.

RETIREMENT & WELLBEING

BEING AN

Active Senior

Older people make up a considerable proportion of Australia’s population—in 2017, over 1 in 7 people were aged 65 and over. With the life expectancy age in Australia currently estimated between 85-89, 15% of Australia’s population is made up of seniors. Yes, age is just a number, and you’re only as old as you feel. Unfortunately, your body doesn’t always stay on track with this theory. Getting older means getting used to changes in your body, both physical and mental. Although we can’t stop the effects of ageing, staying physically, mentally and socially active has shown to be significantly beneficially to your health in your golden years.

Lawn Bowls is the number one sport among seniors in Australia. Currently, there are more than 2,000 registered Lawn Bowls Clubs across the country with an estimated 300,000 regular players over the age of 65. Health professionals agree that playing Lawn Bowls provides a number of health benefits including; • Improving fitness

• Improving coordination and skill development

• Increasing confidence and self-esteem • Enhancing mental wellbeing

• Promoting community connectedness and support With age, bone density, joint cartilage and connective tissue slowly diminish — which weakens them and makes them more susceptible to breakage, stiffness and pain. playing lawn bowls offers mild exercise without causing undue fatigue. More specifically, the physical contraction of the leg and arm muscles compress the veins and helps pump blood back to the heart and lungs. Also, healthy muscular fatigue encourages normal sleep and rest. Finally, there is mounting scientific evidence that active muscular metabolism over the years plays a significant role in delaying or preventing the clinical signs of hardening of the arteries.

Combining the physical attributes of playing lawn bowls with the social aspect the sport can increase feelings for happiness and belonging, in turn aiding in maintaining healthy brain function. Lawn bowls is close to the perfect sport for seniors.

However, the repetitive motions required to play lawn bowls such as lifting and bending can cause excessive pressure on knee’s, shoulders and the lower back. This pressure may then cause the joints to become

RETIREMENT & WELLBEING inflamed.

Inflammation is a defence mechanism in the body. The immune system recognises damaged cells or irritants, and it begins the healing process. When something harmful or irritating affects a part of our body, there is a biological response to try to remove it. This inflammatory response is generally referred to as acute inflammation, and although the symptoms can be uncomfortable, it is a sign that the body is trying to heal itself. Acute inflammation may present itself as; • Pain – The inflamed area is likely to be painful, especially during and after touching.

• Redness – This occurs because the capillaries in the area are filled with more blood.

• Immobility – There may be some loss of function in the region of the inflammation. • Swelling – This is caused by a build-up of fluid.

• Heat – More blood flows to the affected area, which makes the area warmer.

Research has linked inflammation with a number of health issues, the most common being arthritis. From mild arthritis to rheumatoid to osteo, inflammation is believed to be the main causative factor. Reducing inflammation within the body is key to living an active, healthy, pain-free life. In recent years, Australia has seen a significant rise in seniors incorporating complementary and alternative medicines to their health regimes. This may be due to the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation being the first to embrace natural therapies, health foods and supplements. Now that the boomer generation is reaching their senior years, they are again, embracing the availability of alternative medicines.

Many herbs and spices possess natural anti-inflammatory properties, one of the most popular is Turmeric. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as an anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, liver detoxifier and digestive aid. Within the last three years, the popularity of Turmeric as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical antiinflammatories has risen significantly, and for good cause.

Studies have shown that the active curcuminoid compounds found within the Turmeric root, isn’t only a potent antiinflammatory but also very high in antioxidants. With the increase in studies being conducted, many health professionals are recommending Turmeric and/or Curcumin as a complementary supplement. One shortfall, however, is that curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream naturally. Therefore it needs to be combined with a ‘heat-spice’ such as black pepper to increase the bio-availability. Research has shown that the absorption rate of curcumin into the bloodstream can be increased by up to 2000% when combined with piperine (black pepper). Another natural supplement that many seniors are turning to is Magnesium. Magnesium is crucial to nerve transmission, blood coagulation, muscle recovery and energy production. Sadly, many of us simply don’t get enough magnesium in our bodies to the point that we unknowingly suffer from a magnesium deficiency. There isn’t a secret to being a healthy and active senior. Combining mild psychical activity, such as lawn bowls, natural alternative medicines, such as Turmeric, and social interactions can help to improve all aspects of senior life. All three of these key elements have shown to improve cognitive functioning, physical strength and promote healthy body functions.
