"WELCOME
Summer is here, ladies and gents! I'm typing this right after a match on court 19, where the bats would have had a feast with all the pesky flying insects – if only we could keep a few on leashes. Joking aside, summer has arrived, and on cue the tennis community is shifting to evening play. Unless, of course, they belong to the masochistic section of the tennis section who play under the blazing sun.

Speaking of sun-lovers, let's not forget the cricketers and golfers braving the heat for their games. But hey, they know how to end the day right – with a cold beer at their respective bars. The real winners here are the pool aficionados, who get to splash around and stay cool. Meanwhile, our new secretary is happy reviewing the membership renewals as membership numbers swell during this time. Marsa Sports Club is all about fitness, fun, and a fantastic community. We come together to form a close-knit group that thrives on camaraderie and outdoor activities. The dynamic atmosphere at the club is what makes the Club Special.
This year has also seen a great refurbishment of Tigne’ where the new Caterer has certainly brought the venue up to speed. Indeed, one has to book to find a spot!! And for those wanting to avoid the sun, the massage area will definitely have you drowsy anyways. I thoroughly suggest you pay this Marsa-Union Club collective outpost a visit.
Have the rest of a great summer everyone.!

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CHAIRPERSON...
As summer commenced with a flourish, we are experiencing exceptionally high temperatures. Please take care to protect yourselves from the sun and stay hydrated.
As many of you are aware, this edition of the magazine is the first issue that has been outsourced to new publishers. An added feature is the introduction of a hard copy, which will be available at the Club’s reception.
In my previous magazine message, I informed you of several projects that were in the pipeline. I am pleased to inform you that the children’s playground has been completed, much to the delight of our younger members.
After numerous meetings we have recently issued a call for the project quotations for upgrading the swimming pool area and the
demolishing and rebuilding of the children’s bathrooms. Both Planning Authority permits are in hand, and we anticipate work to begin the day after the pool closes at the end of September this year.
Regarding gardening and landscaping, members may have noticed considerable improvements since we hired a part-time gardener who is supervised by Jeanette Gatt Ancilleri and the Club Secretary. Drip irrigation has been installed in most areas. Unfortunately, we lost several palm trees to the red palm weevil this year. To compensate for this loss, on the initiative of the Club Secretary and with the cooperation of ‘Ambjent Malta’, we planted some cypress and pine trees with more to be planted in the near future.
The 8th of July marked the first day of our popular Summer Camp, with 275 children between the ages of 3 and 10 attending from Monday to Friday mornings. I wish the organisers continued success.
On June 21st, the Main Committee members and Club employees gathered at the bar for drinks and finger food to celebrate the official retirement of Albert Bonello, the Club’s ex Secretary, which coincided with his birthday. Thank you, Albert, for your dedication and loyalty to the Club. On behalf of everyone, I wish Albert and Michelle a joyful retirement. I would like to thank the Committee members of the Cricket, Tennis and Padel, Croquet, and Squash Sections, as well as the RMGC Committee members, for their dedication in making the Marsa Sports Club one of the best clubs in Europe. I also extend my gratitude to all our sponsors for their invaluable support.
My thanks also go to my colleagues on the Main Committee, who dedicate a considerable amount of their personal time to the Club. Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to all the employees of the Club.
Enjoy the rest of summer, Godwin Borg
"A MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE"
We are now in the peak of the holiday months and the club is alive with activities. Despite the high temperatures, the daily tennis tournaments, cricket matches, squash events, croquet games and the regular round of golf, keep us all very busy.
As summer approaches, the staff get busy with the annual maintenance of the pool area. During these months, the swimming pool is very popular with our members. Every morning the area is prepared to welcome members and their guests (Monday to Friday) for an enjoyable day by the pool also equipped with a fully decked out pool-bar run by our caterers and available all day with fresh food and drinks.
When the pool closes its doors at the end of September, as some of you might already be aware, the area will be undergoing a major
refurbishment. This is one of the most awaited and ambitious projects that the club has embarked on, and the current Committee of Management has dedicated much energy and voluntary time to the project. Together with the professionals they are striving to give the club and its members a well-deserved uplift.
We are truly blessed to have such beautiful surroundings to practice our favorite sport and relax. The upkeep of the area would not be possible without the hard work of our maintenance staff who strive to ensure that all is kept in pristine condition whilst also managing some improvements like the installation of an irrigation system, regular maintenance on the lawns, more speed bumps in the parking area and other works.
Landscaping work has also picked up pace with the club entering the second phase of this project where with much planning and discussions, we will be reaping the benefits of
the investment in this department.
For the squash enthusiasts, high on the agenda was the replacement of squash court flooring on two of the courts. This project should be nearing completion as we go to print.
Lastly, my message would not be complete without a word of thanks to Albert who will be retiring after 40 years of service towards the club. On a personal note, Albert has been of great help to me during the past 6 months as I stepped into his shoes as club secretary. For this I would like to thank him, and we all wish him the best of luck in his new ventures.
I wish to conclude by welcoming you to the first edition of the revamped MSC magazine which is now back also in print form. Copies are available from reception.
Club Secretary, Dermot Galea

GOLF
As the Captain of The Royal Malta Golf Club for the 2023/24 season, it is my privilege to address you as our Malta vs The Rest competition draws to a close, signaling the end of the official season.
This season, we introduced 10 brand-new state-of-the-art Bent 007 USGA spec greens, which have been enthusiastically received by our members. These greens are a significant upgrade, and we're excited to announce that work will begin immediately to change the remaining 8 greens to the same specification. We look forward to welcoming all members back to a fully upgraded course in October, complete with all 18 greens newly enhanced.
Being Captain of this great club has been one of my greatest honors, one that I will cherish forever. Serving as the youngest known Captain of The Royal Malta Golf Club was not a task I took lightly; I collaborated tirelessly with my amazing committee to ensure a successful season. The dedication and commitment of our team has been truly inspiring.
I'm proud to report a significant increase in competing golfers this season, with over 100 regularly competing - the first time in our club's history. This achievement reflects our vibrant community and the efforts of our committee to foster a welcoming and competitive environment.
We also launched the Course Embellishment Fund (CEF), a new initiative designed to give back to our members. It's gratifying to see this fund grow to €12,000, which future Captains and the club can use to enhance the golfing experience for our members. Additionally, we introduced the Members Benefits program, spearheaded by Cristina from our Marketing team and Tero Vienon from our committee. This program has already gained momentum, with various establishments offering fantastic benefits to our members. For more information, please contact Cristina at head office or Tero Vienon directly.
We recently concluded our season with a prize-giving presentation on the 8th of June at our golf club's panoramic terrace. Over 100 members joined us for a delightful gala dinner, celebrating our champions and supporting fellow golfers for their achievements throughout
the season. Such events showcase the strong unity and community spirit at the Royal Malta Golf Club.
I want to thank everyone who contributed to this successful season: our members, greens staff, head office staff, front desk, The Putters Inn, and the Marsa Sports Club. Your collective efforts have made this season one of the most memorable.
Though the official competitions have ended, my Captaincy continues until September/October, when my Vice Captain, Stewart Davies, will take the reins. I have complete confidence in his ability to continue the great work established by our predecessors.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve this great club. I look forward to seeing you all on the course.

#MALTA VS REST
THE ANNUAL MALTA VS THE REST GOLF MATCH FROM MAY 16TH TO 18TH DELIVERED DRAMA AND EXCITEMENT. WITH STANDOUT PERFORMANCES AND NAIL-BITING MOMENTS, THE EVENT HIGHLIGHTED BOTH SEASONED PLAYERS AND EMERGING TALENTS, CULMINATING IN ANOTHER CLOSELY CONTESTED TIE.
"ANDY FEATHERSTONE'S MASSIVE PUTT ON THE 18TH SECURED A CRUCIAL TIE, ECHOING THE DRAMA OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR "
This annual match was held over the weekend of the16th to18th of May. All that was missing from the storyline was legendary actor (and golfer) Bill Murray, in what felt like a surreal remake of Groundhog Day. Why? Replace Rest Team Tim Cleasby’s clincher in 2023 with a huge putt in the 2024 version from Rest player Andy Featherstone to tie it up against Malta’s Alex Scudamore, who had hit a blinder into the 17th and 18th holes – the half was crucial.
Equally, Aleks Vagimov (Rest) holed for 6 feet to win 18, against Mark Ganado (Malta) who had until then owned that green, holing across the green to win his 4 ball with the Captain on Saturday morning.
Last year – Captain J.J. amassed 3 points and did the same this year including a win against the Club Champion. No mean feat whilst trying to captain the team as well.
Alex Hillblom (Rest) – forever late in qualifying, used his wild card to good effect – taking all 3 points. As did Ruud Critien (Malta).
There were two injuries - Brian James and Andrew Naudi. When Malta’s Naudi was replaced with another Naudi (Peter), shoulders in The Rest team sagged and he proved his worth by halving his game against Tore Lindtveit who was immense all weekend. The Naudis collectively amassed 2 1/2 points. >>
The weekend showcased the club's young guns – Ganado, Azzopardi, Vagimov and Gratil. Wow, what a future the Club has – all contributed points and tremendous energy.
A casual conversation with the Rest Team Captain on the 16th with a huge crowd and Club legend Andy Borg (Malta) trying to fight back suggested that a defibrillator was going to be needed.
Andy lipped out for a par and Anders Bergman – a brilliant up and down to secure the win on 16, the match and the tie.
Yes, another tie. Not a win. The Sword was retained within the Rest camp for another year. 2025. How much more can we take? Time for an ambulance on the course. Stewart Davies
"THE WEEKEND SHOWCASED THE CLUB'S YOUNG GUNS – GANADO, AZZOPARDI, VAGIMOV AND GRATIL. – ALL CONTRIBUTED POINTS AND TREMENDOUS ENERGY."

#ANNUAL AWARD CEREMONY
WE RECENTLY CONCLUDED OUR SEASON WITH A PRIZE-GIVING PRESENTATION ON THE 8TH OF JUNE AT OUR GOLF CLUB’S BEAUTIFUL PANORAMIC TERRACE. OVER 100 MEMBERS JOINED A GALA DINNER, CELEBRATING OUR CHAMPIONS FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON. THE AUDIENCE WAS WELCOMED BY THE CAPTAIN JAY JAY MICALLEF, WHO SUMMARIZED THE SEASON, AND THANKED EVERYONE, INCLUDING HIS COMMITTEE, FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE CONTRIBUTIONS.
RMGC Club champion Noah Gratil with RMGC Captain JJ Micallef
Captain JJ Micallef at the annual award ceremony
The RMGC’s Club Championship took place between Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th of May. On Saturday afternoon, Noah Gratil needed at least 50 points to qualify for the Rest Team and I discussed the options with him on how that could be achieved between the Gross and Net prize this weekend. However, a statement from him – “so there’s 100 points to go for” should have told me where his head was at – anyway, more on this later.
Beautiful but breezy conditions on Friday and Saturday gave way to prime Spring on the Sunday. The leaderboard looked like a who’s who of the club with everyone seemingly in form from Gross to Net categories.
Highlights of the 3 days include seven birdies on Round 1 from Peter Canaki as he posted an opening 69/62, only to be outdone on Sunday by Mark Siddall, showing his continued form 71/59.
Playing steady golf, Andy Featherstone led going into Sunday and for the second major in
"A TOTAL OF 202, OBLITERATED THE FIELD BY 8 SHOTS. THIS IS OUR CLUB CHAMPION 2024"
a row, led out the final group with Noah Gratil and Ruud Critien.
Lurking just behind and within easy striking distance were the Group of the Captain, Brian James and of course Andy Borg. Messrs Borg and Micallef had a strong start, both getting under par, but for the Captain, hole 12 would be his nemesis for the weekend – posting 5 over for the 3 days, but he would end up posting a 70, a total of 211 and overall 3rd place.
Brian had a strong round of 71, his third score of 71, but came unstuck on 9 after an 8. Andy’s inevitable charge came, smacking the pin on 13 for a kick in birdie after birdie on 12 but after bogies on 15 and 16 he settled for 2nd place with 210.
In the final Group, Messrs Featherstone and Critien never really got going and they slipped down the field.
The special stuff was to come as Noah Gratil tackled the last 10 holes, leaving the 8th on level par for the day. His next 6 holes – birdie, birdie, par, birdie, par, birdie and he threw another one
in on 18 for good measure.
It wasn’t so much the numbers as the manner. Effortless golf, low pressure golf, and a demeanor suggesting that he was more worried about what was for lunch.
A total of 202, obliterated the field by 8 shots. He is our Club Champion 2024.
And for good measure, he added the Plate, edging out Mark Siddall and Mark Ganado and also nailed his MVR qualifying place by delivering, yes, 100 points.
Parents looked on proudly at the presentation and we believe he now has bragging rights over Finley who was equally delighted over the phone. Finley shed a tear or two, as Noah simply sought to confirm the lunch menu – that’s how cool he is.
Our thanks to Laferla Insurance once again for their generous sponsorship.

CRICKET
"BUILDING
A STRONG FOUNDATION"
Since taking the reins in April 2024, the Marsa Sports Club Cricket Section committee has embarked on a comprehensive move forward to solidify the club's position within the local cricketing landscape. A primary focus has been the restructuring of the section's operational framework to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
To bolster the club's profile and provide valuable match experience for local players, the committee has successfully hosted several touring teams. These matches have not only entertained members but have also contributed to the development of Maltese cricket.
Recognising the importance of a comfortable environment for players and officials, the committee has initiated improvements to the changing room facilities. While acknowledging that significant upgrades are still required, the initial work completed represents a positive step forward.
To enhance security and surveillance, the installation of CCTV cameras has been prioritized. Additionally, the club's visibility has been elevated through the installation of new signage above the pavilion. These infrastructural enhancements are essential for creating a modern and welcoming cricket facility.
The committee remains committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive cricket community. Plans are in place to continue supporting the development of women's and junior cricket. By investing
in these areas, the club aims to nurture future talent and expand its membership base.
Securing sponsorship is a key priority for the committee. Initial steps have been taken to engage potential sponsors, and the club is actively pursuing opportunities to secure additional funding. These funds will be allocated towards improving facilities, supporting player development, and organising events.
While challenges remain, the committee is steadfast in its commitment to building a sustainable cricket program. The groundwork laid in the past few months provides a solid foundation for future growth and success.

AS APRIL WELCOMED OUR NEWLY ELECTED COMMITTEE, IT ALSO USHERED IN A WAVE OF EXCITING NEW PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES TO INVIGORATE THE CRICKETING COMMUNITY AT THE MARSA SPORTS CLUB.
With a significant increase in touring teams visiting the island, the upcoming summer months are shaping up to be incredibly busy for our section – and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Hosting no fewer than nine teams over just three months, alongside inter-club matches, national training sessions, and numerous other events, our primary concern was maintaining the pitch and surrounding areas. Thankfully, our innovative strategy of managing the calendar to allow ample rest for
the grounds has been a huge success. We’re confident that as we head into summer, we won’t face any major issues.
Speaking of the months ahead, summer has kicked off with a bang! We’re already into the first week of the annual Malta Cricket Association Domestic League (MCADL), and excitement is in the air. Cricket, along with our section, is thriving. This year, the MCADL features no fewer
than 18 clubs from around the island and Gozo, all vying for the chance to represent Malta at the European Cricket League in Spain in 2025. The fierce competition is a testament to the growing popularity of cricket in Europe and within our community.
What’s on the horizon? Rumors are flying like boundaries! There’s talk of launching our own junior cricket academy by the end of August –

we’ll just have to wait and see. There’s also a drive to encourage more women to get involved in cricket, and we’re hopeful we’ll see an increase in our already impressive 14 females.
Exciting announcements are on the way, promising big changes for next year that will thrill our members. But let’s take a moment to reflect on the past three months!

TIPS TO STAY HYDRATED
As summer arrives and temperatures soar, athletes and sports enthusiasts face the critical challenge of staying hydrated. Whether you’re playing competitive sports, participating in recreational activities, or just enjoying an outdoor workout, maintaining proper hydration is essential for performance, safety, and overall well-being.
The Importance of Hydration
Hydration is crucial for various bodily functions, including regulating body temperature, maintaining joint lubrication, and ensuring optimal cardiovascular performance. During physical exertion, especially in the heat, your body loses fluids through sweat. This loss, if not replenished, can lead to dehydration, impairing physical and cognitive performance and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Signs of Dehydration
Understanding the signs of dehydration is essential. Symptoms include dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, headache, and dark-colored urine.
In more severe cases, dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, nausea, and confusion. Monitoring these symptoms can help you address hydration issues before they escalate. Hydration Strategies for Summer Sports
1. Pre-Hydrate: Start hydrating well before your activity. Drinking water consistently throughout the day is more effective than chugging a large amount immediately before playing. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, adjusting based on your activity level and the temperature.
2. Hydration During Activity: While engaging in sports, aim to drink fluids regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. For activities lasting longer than an hour, consider beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks, which help replenish sodium, potassium, and other essential minerals lost through sweat.
3. Post-Activity Rehydration: After your workout or game, continue to drink fluids to replace what was lost. Including foods high in water content, such as fruits and vegetables, can also aid in
rehydration. For intense or prolonged activities, a recovery drink containing carbohydrates and proteins can help restore energy levels and enhance recovery.
Choosing the Right Fluids
Water is typically sufficient for short to moderate activities. However, for extended periods of exercise, especially in hot weather, sports drinks containing electrolytes can be beneficial. They help replace essential salts lost in sweat and can enhance performance and endurance. Be cautious with caffeinated and alcoholic beverages as they can contribute to dehydration.
Staying hydrated while playing sports in summer is vital for maintaining performance and preventing heat-related issues. By understanding the importance of hydration, recognising signs of dehydration, and implementing effective hydration strategies, you can enjoy your summer activities safely and optimally. Remember, proper hydration is not just about drinking water—it's about making hydration a continuous part of your sports routine to keep your body functioning at its best.
TENNIS/PADEL
The Tennis & Padel Section of the club manages an event calendar which is full to the brim with tournaments and other activities organised all year round. This hard-working and dedicated committee of members strive to organize a number of social doubles’ tournaments for all to enjoy. For the past few years, the committee has also introduced a singles tournaments which is increasingly becoming very popular among our members and is thus looking into the possibility to introduce a singles league.. In addition to the social tournaments, one cannot miss the Open tournaments and the international tournaments for both Juniors and Seniors alike. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the captains involved in the team tournaments for their participation and dedication towards the sport as without them these events cannot be held.
Our social members also benefit from the Friday tennis socials open to men/ladies of all levels of play whilst our younger members join the ever-so-popular Sunday morning coaching. On an annual basis, the committee has always tried to diversify its events and nonetheless last May, with the special initiative of our male committee members, we saw the introduction of
a tournament for men running in sync with the popular Ladies Event. This tournament was very well received by our male members and promises to be an annual event on our calendar. This year both men and ladies enjoyed a nice BBQ following the presentation of both events.
As I outlined above, a number of International Tournaments are held at our club, and we can proudly announce that another new tournament sanctioned by the MTF will be added to the International Calendar. The Tennis Europe U12 will run in December and is expected to be well attended by our young promising players who welcome any opportunity to showcase their abilities against players from around Europe. In the last two years, our club has also joined the Padel community with the introduction of two state of the art courts. We have seen the sport gain traction among us, with these new courts being consistently booked and the request for coaching lessons for both Adults and Juniors is on the increase. Apart from socials for members, Sunday morning Padel coaching for all levels of play has started and is slowly gaining in popularity.
Likewise to tennis, the section has kept busy organizing events for our Padel enthusiasts. Challenges are organized monthly and a new league is currently ongoing. A 2nd round of the
league will be added on by the end of the year.
In 2023 the MSC was responsible for the organization of the first ever Malta Padel Open Tournament. Here we could see the participation of the best players coming from all the local Padel Clubs fiercely competing for the Maltese National Champion title. Based on the success of this event, 2024 saw a repeat of this national event with international players also flying in to compete for the title.
Also on the Section calendar are the national BeActive events which are being held on 22nd of September. This year the two sports will hold separate open day tournaments. Since this an Open event, it also welcomes non-members to participate and enjoy both tournaments at our club.
As Summer comes to an end, all players eagerly await our main presentation event followed by a BBQ in the Palm Grove. This will be held on the 13th of September and we look forward to having you all join in with family and friends for an evening of good food, music and dance. Hope to see you all there.

#MALTA SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL LADIES’ TEAM TOURNAMENT HELD OVER FIVE WEEKS DURING APRIL, THE SOTHEBY’S TOURNAMENT THIS YEAR SAW A VERY HEALTHY TURNOUT OF LADIES. THANKS TO A DETERMINED RECRUITMENT DRIVE BY EDITH HILI, ANOTHER TEAM WAS ADDED AS WELL AS TWO MORE LINES OF PLAYERS, BRINGING IT BACK TO ITS PREVIOUS FORMAT.
The captains this year were Ludguarde Davies, Pat Camenzuli, Judith Ricci, Doris Zammit, and newcomer Vicky Tua. In the first round, all the teams started on an equal footing with 5 points each. It was in the second round that the positions started shifting as Ludguarde beat Judith 6-4 and Doris beat Vicky 7-3.
It has to be pointed out that Judith’s team was plagued by a lot of bad luck: players scratching, injuries, and replacements also getting injured. It is to her credit that despite times when she would not be able to field a team, Judith persevered and did her best as captain to keep her team from giving up completely. Team tournaments always depend on an element of luck, but sometimes when things start going wrong, there is not much one can do.
Round 3 saw Pat beating Doris 6-4 and Vicky beating Judith 6-4. At this point, Doris was leading in the standings, but since each team had a rest, the top positions were still very much up for grabs.
In round four, Ludguarde had a sweeping win against Vicky (8-2) while Pat also won easily against Judith (7-3). At the end of this round, Ludguarde had pulled ahead, closely followed by Pat. Incredibly enough, despite all her problems, Judith’s team was still hovering around third place. The tournament was very lucky with the weather until the final day when the islands were hit by a bad storm. This meant having to postpone the encounter by one week, which created havoc for several captains who had players missing. Pat’s team especially had 5 players who were not available, which meant that she had to give two walkovers (4 sets).

"IT WAS LUDGUARDE’S TEAM, HOWEVER, WHICH EMERGED TRIUMPHANT, BEATING DORIS 7-3."
As organisers, we always try our best to avoid these scenarios as ideally a final is won on merit rather than walkovers, but sometimes they are unavoidable.
It is therefore impressive that despite starting off on such a bad foot, and despite losing to Vicky 6-4, Pat’s team still managed to garner a respectable second place.
It was Ludguarde’s team, however, which emerged triumphant, beating Doris 7-3. It was an unlucky finish for Doris, who had been in the running throughout the day for second place, only to be pipped at the post by Pat by 3 points. Unfortunately, in spite of her valiant efforts, Judith finished last, winning the wooden spoon.
The final results were:
Ludguarde Davies - 26 points
Pat Camenzuli - 22 points
Doris Zammit - 19 points
Vicky Tua - 17 points
Judith Ricci - 16 points
Present for the presentation were the Sotheby’s representatives who handed out the prizes along with the organisers. All those who took part also received a goodie bag. The presentation was followed by a lunch at Kulu restaurant, which was thoroughly enjoyed by those present.
The
#YONEX LADIES TOURNAMENT
No sooner had the dust settled on the morning Sotheby’s tournament, than it was time to start recruiting captains and players for the mid-week ladies’ tournament held every Wednesday evening. The captains this year were Lorraine Flores, Jacqui Cutajar, Mariella Ferrante, Linda Beere (making a welcome return after a long absence), Caroline Hayes, and Sharon Mizzi.
The tournament got off to a whopping start
with an incredible 9-1 win by Sharon against Mariella. Caroline beat Linda’s team 6-4 while Jacqui also beat Lorraine 6-4. The second round had everyone in trepidation at what seemed like Sharon’s formidable team, but things took an interesting turn when Sharon vs Linda ended in a 5-5 draw. It was Lorraine this time who won 9-1 against Caroline, who unfortunately had several missing players and could not field a strong enough team. Recovering slightly from the previous week, Mariella had a good 7-3 win against Jacqui.
As the captains prepared their formations for the third round, the inevitable problems with unavailable players and unfortunate injuries were a determining factor. As a result, there were four walkovers which could not be avoided. In this round, Sharon beat Caroline 6-4, Jacqui had a good win against Linda 7-3 while in a surprising result, Mariella vs Lorraine ended in a 5-5 draw. It was clear by now that Sharon’s and Lorraine’s teams were in the lead and were the teams to beat, although they were closely followed by Jacqui’s team, which was gaining steadily. >>

"THE FINAL DAY SAW THE TWO STRONGEST TEAMS WIN COMFORTABLY AGAINST THEIR OPPONENTS. "
In the fourth round, Linda beat Mariella 6-4 Jacqui beat Caroline 6-4, and Lorraine had another strong win, this time 8-2 against Sharon, causing her to lose some of her previous advantage. In fact, Jacqui had now caught up with Sharon, while Lorraine was still comfortably in the lead by four points. The final day saw
Sharon facing off against Jacqui, with a resounding 8-2 win for Jacqui. Lorraine won comfortably against Linda with a score of 7-3 while Caroline had her best win to date (8-2) against Mariella. Lorraine therefore came first with 33 points, followed by Jacqui as runner-up with 30 points. Mariella was
the recipient of the wooden spoon. A very well-attended presentation BBQ followed, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A Yonex racquet - kindly donated by Tennis Trade - was won in the raffle by Nikki Critien. Helen Asciak, representing the sponsor, presented the prizes.

espite the summer heat, it’s great to see so many of you continuing to hit the courts! Let's not complain about the weather—let's just play squash!
Maintenance Updates
We are currently undergoing maintenance on our squash courts. While you might be frustrated with the temporary closures, we have exciting updates to share. Courts 4 and 5 are getting brand new floors, and we are repainting the walls. Our plan includes similar renovations for Courts 1, 2, and 3 in the near future. Although the costs are high, we are committed to providing the best-maintained courts and facilities in Malta.
Socials
We've seen a wonderful increase in participation in our Socials on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Players of different skill levels are joining and mingling, which is exactly what we aim for. Given the rising interest, we may need to add another day soon. In addition to squash, we now extend our socials to include monthly dinners.

Tip
for
Squash Players
Squash is unique, it is fast, competitive, and provides an excellent workout. One hour of squash can burn upto 850 calories. To play squash at a competitive level you need to work on a combination of:
1. Aerobic fitness
2. Strength conditioning
3. Flexibility
4. Mental focus
However, if you have never played squash before, don’t think you can go out on the court and become a champion over night, without the correct training, squash puts your cardiovascular system under extreme strain. Correct conditioning is paramount to playing a good game of squash.
If we look at what is required, players need to have aerobic fitness to allow them to run and swing for an hour or more, flexibility to reach for tight drop shots, strength to control their racquet and hit the ball with power, and mental focus to “stay in” a long match.
A good squash fitness training program should help to strengthen and condition all of these aspects of a player’s game.

#CROQUET
Summer is in full swing, and the croquet section has probably enjoyed the best spring in many ways, thanks to friendly competition. Both pitches were regularly played on simultaneously by 16 players, a spectacle not seen since before the pandemic. We hope this continues for a long time.
In April, we held our annual singles competition. After some very close games, Annette Sowden was declared the winner of the Ladies' competition, and Ross Yarnold emerged victorious in the Men's competition. We
completed the day's events with an excellent meal at Kulu's, attended by all our members. Also in April, we hosted the Marsaskala Croquet Club, an event well-attended as they enjoy playing on grass instead of the astro turf on their home pitch. They especially appreciated the hospitality of the Marsa Club after play, so we hope some new members may emerge from this experience.
We are currently still playing on Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. However, as the heat increases, we will soon consider playing in the evenings, as we did last year, depending on cricket fixtures. The new calendar system has been greatly appreciated this year,
making it a lot easier for us to plan in advance and avoid any date clashes. A big thank you to the cricket section and the club secretary for making this happen.
We would also like to express our appreciation to the ground staff, who have made great improvements to the quality of our playing surface on the cricket ground. As always, we are keen to attract anyone interested in trying croquet. It is a very enjoyable pastime that is easy to learn and play, with a great social side as well. If you are interested, please get in touch.
