Words by Alina Anisimova

[ Atelier Arya: ––– A New Attitude to Watch ]

Alina Anisimova interviews founders behind four emerging and sustainable brands.

f you happen to be walking around the streets of Sliema, you’re likely to stumble upon Atelier Arya, a tiny, yet chic and incredibly cozy shop, where you will find a handful of exciting and up-coming brands just waiting to be discovered.

“When I moved to Malta I realised that there is a notable lack of unique, trendy, wellmade affordable clothing on the market,” says Parys Peymani. Parys launched Atelier Arya based on the premise that everyone should have access to beautiful, eco-friendly garments, making it the holy grail of vintage basics, with pieces sourced in her favourite shops around Paris. “The garments are between 20 to 50 years old, but they are beautifully preserved, also because the fabrics we wear today are far less hard-wearing than in the past, especially when it comes to leather pieces,” she explains. They are then brought to Malta with a track to offset the environmental impact of shipping. In a moment when many fashion brands are trying to woo customers with online stores, Atelier Arya does it with an experience-focused brick-and-mor tar store that has the feeling of a well-loved home. There’s an old coffee table filled with vintage magazines

She is traveling the world searching for unique, locally based brands producing organic products made with love. “Parys’ commitment to sustainability is so extensive, it was really impor tant for her to know what kind of materials we use to produce our products,” says Lucy Egriboz, the founder behind Golden SKAI. “It’s this mentality and spirit that was a guiding force in choosing us as business par tners.” Golden SKAI seems to perfectly fit in the shop’s concept with pieces sourced and manufactured to highly ethical standards. Lucy gets inspired by new places, new cultures and new experiences — and these ideas get translated into trendy, affordable, high quality 14k gold jewellery that celebrates “freedom and femininity”. “I left my full-time jobs and launched Golden SKAI four years ago — I wanted to do something I really love,” says Lucy. “But I was mostly home alone and I missed working with clients, something I really enjoyed in my past job in retail. So Atelier Arya was the perfect oppor tunity for me to do what I love and be encouraged by other creative women.” “We all have different products, so we are never competing,” says Saz Mifsud. “Someone can come to Atelier Arya and buy an entire outfit, accessories, jewellery and makeup — and feel good about it. That’s the idea.” and books, gold-framed mirrors, dried flowers, and other fancy delights. “For me online is very easy because this is what I do every day as a freelancer working in the fashion industry,” Parys says. “Plus, if you work by yourself from home it is impor tant to socialise, and I almost got depressed because I haven’t met anyone in four months after I moved to Malta — and that’s how I got an idea to open a shop.” So when Parys found the perfect location just in the hear t of Sliema it was the right fit, at the right time.

[ ...Someone can come to Atelier Arya and buy an entire outfit, accessories, jewellery and makeup — and feel good about it. That’s the idea.” ]

“But if I’m being really honest, having a store is a lot of work. It’s like having a baby — you need to be available 24/7, and it requires a lot of investment,” she admits. “I realised I cannot do it alone, and that’s how I’ve met the girls,” she says while referring to her business par tners. With Balanced Lifestore, Golden SKAI, and Saz Mifsud joining Atelier Arya, the store is entering a new phase.

The very first designs made by Saz Mifsud when she launched her brand six years ago were handcrafted silk scarves. Over the years, the number of pieces Saz produces has grown and the silks are beautifully handcrafted to create a colourful range of accessories, clutch bags and headbands. Silk scarves still remain a par t of the collection, bearing witness to the roots of the brand.

“We’ve just joined forces but it has been a great experience so far ; it feels great to challenge, push each other, and improve for better. It’s amazing!” says Pavli Medvedova, Balanced Lifestore founder. “What really unites us all is that we appreciate originality, authenticity and a personal touch. Atelier Arya is not just any high street brand — we prioritise ethics and provide an unique in-store experience.”

Atelier Arya is more than a commercial brick-and-mor tar store. As fashion goes ever more mass, the brand taps into the basic human craving for beautiful, ethically-produced garments that tell a story that goes beyond buying something simply because it’s trending. At Arya, what you get is more than just some clothes — it’s an energy all its own. [ V ]

[ ‘The Real Deal’ ] THE DESIGNER RESALE MARKET IS HOT AND RISING, AND LABEL HAS DISCOVERED THE SECRET SAUCE: BECOME A CREDIBLE, WELL-STYLED, AND GLOSSY PLATFORM FOR BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS, MANY OF WHO ARE THE SAME PERSON. ALINA ANISIMOVA REPORTS ON HOW LABEL IS CHANGING THE WAY WE SHOP FOR LUXURY.

H

Words by Alina Anisimova ave you ever fallen out of love with your favourite designer piece? Maybe it’s the Dior Saddle bag you loved when you bought it but soon rejected as it became more mainstream. Or perhaps it was a pair of logo-dotted Gucci slides that you loved but no longer love-love. Or maybe it’s a Bottega Veneta dress you bought a couple of years ago, but went up a size or down a size and just don’t wear it anymore. We’ve all got a story. Established in 2018, Label acts as a third party between buyers and sellers. It’s a place where customers can sell their luxury items or buy gently used clothes from high-end brands like Gucci, Christian Louboutin, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry, to name but a few.The luxury store offers a more advanced shopping experience, whilst drawing notice from traditional retailers thanks to its discounted prices. It all almost sounds too good to be true, right?

Regarding this year’s fashion trends, Sandra says logo-mania is back. Apparently, customers in Malta are after iconic, logo-centric styles, notably Dior, Gucci, and Lions Vuitton are coming on strong in resale value, while past season’s styles without ‘in-your-face’ labels are more in demand among the international audience. Though only having been in the luxury business for less than two years, Label has a long enough track record to have seen the shift in shopping habits and a growing acceptance of buying pre-owned goods. “I absolutely think there’s a change in how people are spending and thinking about spending on pre-owned luxury fashion,” Sandra says. The argument goes that the arrival of Instagram and the increased importance of sustainability have driven the great shift in the consumption habits of a younger generation of consumers. Millennial and Gen-Zs want luxury goods but do not want to pay full retail prices — and they also want to be environmentally responsible — so they are turning to the pre-owned luxury market for something cheaper and more eco-friendly. While for many older buyers, shopping second hand has been something they do on the sly, younger consumers have no such qualms. Millennial and Gen Z shoppers have long tapped into the unique, treasure-hunting experience, and there’s no stigma associated with buying used designer goods anymore, which is the key to Label’s past and future success. Selling used clothing wasn’t a new idea; it seems that stores specialised in very expensive used designer goods have been around forever — but not in Malta. “I was surrounded by women who didn’t want to be seen in an outfit twice, thus ending up with expensive clothes hanging in their wardrobes — some of them with the tags still on, which is a pity,” says Sandra Unger, the woman responsible for putting preused luxury fashion on the map in Malta. “At the same time, I traveled around Europe and saw a lot of vintage shops and outlets where you could buy these pieces for discounted prices.”

InLABEL many ways, Label is still in its early stages — and hopefully, it’s just the LUXURY PRE-OWNED FASHION BOUTIQUE - A SELECTION OF HIGH-END FASHION PIECES beginning. Sandra then began organising clothing swap events at Tiffany, her champagne bar in St Julian’s. The response was so enthusiastic that she decided to open a pre-owned luxury store and began hunting for inventory. “I called all my friends and said, ‘I need you to send me anything you’re not using’,” she laughs. “I also brought a lot of clothes from Poland and Austria.” Today, Label is a go-to place for buying and selling luxury, offering shoppers a large selection of authentic designer goods. The great thing about Label is the value they place on curation. Items you purchase are guaranteed to come from a respectable closet as every one of their pieces is checked by an in-house team of experts to make sure everything is authentic, relevant, and top quality, whether it’s a one-off piece or everyone’s favourite must-have. “At Label, we take good care of our luxury goods — every item is special,” Sandra says. “Once we had a black Birkin bag, and we were fussing over it like if it was a baby.” “We have slowly learned what exactly our customers lust for,” she says. [ ...“The Maltese cross cuffs with diamonds were his idea, over which time has no power”... ] Along the way, the young Duke became her friend and social escort of choice, taking Chanel on trips to Italy and showing her the marvels of remarkable Byzantine heritage. And that is part of why the relationship worked so well: it was so mutually beneficial not just as a friendship - their minds complemented each other, and it was only a matter of time before this duo produced one of the 20th century’s most iconic jewellery pieces.

F

ulco di Verdura was a titled Sicilian aristocrat whose full name amounts to Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, the Duke of Verdura. Naturally social and vivacious, this blue-blooded playboy grew up amongst the glamour of European society. Verdura was widely known for his lavish lifestyle and his party attitude, which was showcased at grand costume balls at the elegant Palazzo Verdura in Palermo. It was this very hunger for luxury and pleasure that burned through what was left of the Duke’s inheritance – he spent most of it on an infamous ‘1799’ themed costume party. But it was during this lavish affair when Chanel and Verdura found each other, which later helped him to launch his career as a jewellery designer. Mademoiselle fell in love with his charm and artistry, his unquenchable lust for life that was destructive but also exciting to behold. He looked elegant and sounded worldly and intelligent in either Italian or French. Recognizing his wit and sense of style, Chanel asked him to join her in Paris, designing textiles for her fashion house.

Soon after the inspiration trip around Mediterranean Europe, Coco Chanel entrusted Fulco de Verdura with the task to help redesign her personal collection of obsolete, to her mind, jewellery she had been given by her many lovers, including Duke of Westminster and Russian Grand Duke Dimitri. Taken up the challenge, Verdura incorporated his rich visual heritage to create objects of splendor, prompting him to turn from a self-taught

designer to a world-renowned jeweller. With its unconventional combinations of materials, colourful precious stones mixed with semiprecious, even shells and sea glass, Verdura’s designs were often centred upon motifs drawn from his childhood in Sicily, as well Byzantine and Italian Renaissance art. But of the countless items of jewels that Fulco de Verdura is remembered for, few lodge in the memory quite like the bold, Byzantine-style bangles in enamel and precious stones with Maltese crosses.

counts started to work for me… Italian duke Fulco di Verdura had the luxurious ancestry and excellent taste that helped him to create amazing jewellery. The Maltese cross cuffs with diamonds were his idea, over which time has no power. Chanel made Fulco di Verdura her in house jeweller and he, in turn, helped shape the jewellery of the house of Chanel. Four years later, the young Duke emigrated to the US, launched his jewellery label and opened a brand new flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York. When women bought Verdura, they were also buying into a belief in long-term investment in elegance. The blue-blooded designer was a real artist who rejected mass-production and commercialism, creating personal pieces that graced the neck, hands and chest of celebrities and Hollywood stars of the era, including Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, Paulette Godard, Joan Crawford and Joan Fontaine. His designs were favourites of many socialites and aristocrats, such as Diana, the Princess of Wales; the Duchess of Marlborough; Princess Grace of Monaco; Diana Vreeland; Jackie Kennedy; and the Duchess of Windsor, of whom the photographer, Horst, said that, “Verdura alone knew how to make her a Duchess.” Few designs maintain their style and beauty for decades, but it seems safe to say that Verdura is truly timeless. Over the past eight decades, his designs have been synonymous with the ultimate status symbol and a certain kind of aristocratic elegance, admired to this day by high society and style-makers worldwide. Coco Chanel was quoted as saying of Verdura: “The time has come when princes and

This feature has also been used in the interiors, which are divided into programmatic boxes with wooden panels and doors that act as separating elements. There are the outer boxes, and then there are the inner boxes that ‘resolve’ the program, a better option than just simply putting up a wall. We have a playful perspective of space: this is a meta-box project.” With limitations on the plot size, “this led us to verticalise the house and create the stacked boxes.” Designed for a client’s private residence with an extensive brief, Studio MK27 wanted to create the feeling of living in a townhouse. “When we think about spaces, we think about how the clients will live there. This determines the outline of the house. The rest is a mixture of what we believe and how the customers live. Everything is planned from the beginning.”

Walking through the sections of the house, one can find the social areas situated in the first volume – the ground floor – including a terrace and the kitchen. The second floor houses more private space - the master bedroom with its own living room, walk-in closet and terrace. The third floor is dedicated to the children. There are two suites, a living room and a guest bedroom and bathroom, and a cobogó wall terrace (hollow brick wall). “The hollow brick façade ensures visual protection while allowing natural light in and cross ventilation. There is also a rooftop and a semi-basement with garage, laundry area, gym, and a swimming pool, which can be viewed through a glazed strip in the garden next to the main living room.” She continues to describe, “The boxes that compose the house are made of ‘slatted’ exposed concrete, with the front and rear facades lined with different materials, as if they were ‘lids’. These materials form a uniform skin that hides the openings. Although the concrete structure is more robust due to the high incidence of earthquakes in the region, it was possible to make the whole structure lighter by creating cantilevers.” >>

[...“The internal space expands into the external spaces, a continuation and synchronicity is felt throughout the volumes”...] The striking bookshelf that runs through the ground floor is “a very present element in our architecture to give vitality to the spaces.” This ingenious design comprises the use of storing books and decorative objectives and also acts as a sideboard and bar with functional cabinets related to the use of the dining room and kitchen. The internal space expands into the external spaces, a continuation and synchronicity is felt throughout the volumes. Samanta confirms this observation; “We do not believe there is a difference between interior design and architecture. At one point we began to design the interiors of our projects because there was no longer a distinction between the external architecture and the interior of the house. We always think of interiors as par t of the whole house design, trying to strengthen the impor tant relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. The process of designing goes through this and after it the house gets another life, something unpredictable and that gives meaning to the architecture.” >>

She explains that since the house is set in an urban plot, occupying the land with the necessary density whilst ensuring quality, “external spaces was an enormous challenge.” Despite these challenges, the architecture and design team created interesting outdoor spaces and blurred the boundaries between inside and outside. “We love this strong integration between the interior and the exterior and there is a constant search for enlargement of spaces. The architects at Linehouse explored the materials John Anthony would have encountered on his journey: hand glazed tiles, natural and racked renders, terracotta, hand dyed fabrics and hand woven wickers. The private dining rooms are lined in hand-painted tiles featuring large-scale illustrations of commodities traded between the British and Chinese in the 18th century such as medicinal poppies and exotic animals. INTERVIEW

When did your artistic journey begin? My artistic journey began fifty years ago when I was three years of age, watching the moon landings on TV. I was fascinated and started drawing astronauts on every blank surface I could find, which often included the walls of the two-storey flat, which we lived in at the time - Much to my mother’s dismay. My bedroom was a small attic room, a bit like an artist garret, which my mother had decorated with pages from The Reader’s Digest as she couldn’t afford wallpaper. This led to a bustling room visually for an imaginative hyperactive toddler. No ‘E’ numbers for me back then!

by the name of – Can you share your creative process? It’s effectively a hand-painted collage, overlaying images found from newspapers, magazines and flyers. Once I find something that works, I’ll start to alter the proportions, making the shoulders and hands bigger if need be and adding additional elements. Occasionally I’ll pose for the body if I can’t find the pose I’m looking for. Once I’m happy with the final rough drawing, I’ll transfer it to the canvas. I work in a variety of mediums, including acrylic, pastels, Posca pens, coloured pencils and inks, anything which will adhere to the surface and can be applied with a brush or a finger. It’s a culmination of a lot of happy accidents; I’m always learning. All finished off with a coat of lacquer and varnish.

What keeps driving you forward in your artistic journey? The voices of the anthropomorphic characters in my head. It’s a crowded place. They tend to have the voices of famous people, at the moment I’ve got a cowboy cat. He’s a big battle-scarred, one-eyed ginger tom by the name of ‘Catterwaulin’ Jones with the voice of Sean Bean. Like Sean, in most of his movies, he dies in my narrative, gunned down by a rival gang member in a field of catnip. Do you have a favourite piece? Is it hard to part with your work? My favourite piece so far is my new rendition of ‘Mr Snuggles is Straight Out of Cullompton II’. In the beginning, I was reticent about letting pieces go. But now, once they have been professionally photographed, I’m quite happy for them to make their way into the world. An artist has got to eat! >>

INTERVIEW

What’s your biggest inspiration? The world I’m creating with all these characters has a hint of Beatrix Potter’s whimsy, Kenneth Graham’s Wind in the Willows anarchy with James Ellroy’s cynicism and bile; a dash of Dashiell Hammett and a sprinkling of Jules Verne and HG Wells. The artist wise, the comic book illuminates like Berni Wrightson, Barry Smith, Mike Kaluta and Jack Davis - they are followed by Rene Magritte, Edward Hopper and Arthur Rackham. I’m also a great fan of Travis Louie. What has been your proudest career highlight to date? My good friend Gilli Kane collecting my works and inane ramblings and printing them in a hardback book is still quite a thrill. Oh, and being in an urban art group auction in Mayfair, London alongside the likes of Banksy and Damian Hirst after exhibition for the first time. What do you love most about your profession? The fact that people enjoy my work and want

it on their walls. Whether it’s having in their toilet or living room, everyone’s a winner. What does 2020 have in store for Julian Quaye? I’m currently developing new characters, painting and elaborating on the back-story with maps. From two sibling fiendish criminal felines by the name of Rom and Rem Krei and their adoptive wolf mother, Violet. A marine biologist otter called Jaque Coaster. A gourmand hippo food critic and many more. Next, I’d like to work with a writer to take this project, which I’ve been working on since 2011 further. Ultimately, I’d love to see my craters on the big screen in a magic lantern theatre. Julian Quaye has a solo exhibition running in Bocabar Finzels Reach in his hometown of Bristol from Saturday 23rd November to 4th January 2020. The exhibition can be seen online at https://www.the-kane.gallery/ and for more information about Julian visit http://www.julianquaye.co.uk [ V ]

EXHIBITION

Considered to be a raw art form, street art elements are brought in the gallery space and form part of a collection of thematic works, which the artist developed over a number of years. In the works presented, the artist explores concepts of identity, freedom, and existential notions from a perspective situated firmly in Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean. The artworks recount of a journey taken by masses of people, who leave their countries in hope of a better future, if only to enter a state of limbo in a battle between state borders. Current political state of affairs may challenge preconceived notions of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers trapped in a political game, which bounces human lives back and forth, across national borders and reduces humanitarian obligations to discourses concerned with policy. The final message being that; All that Glitters is not Gold.

Death of Innocence – 2019 150 x 100cm acrylic on canvas

All That Glitters is not Gold mural – 2015 – 6.5 x 10m aerosol on concrete

Words by Rachel Formosa The exhibition runs until December 8 at Space C, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta. Entrance is free. For more information, visit www.kreattivita.org.

CUISINE << SPICED HAM HOCK, SPRING ONIONS SERVES 4 – Prep & Cooking Time: Overnight soak + 3 .5 hours

20g Sugar 50g Yolk 1 Gelatine leaf

4 smoked ham hocks 150ml red wine 900ml chicken stock 2 shallots, sliced ½ carrot, sliced ½ leek, sliced 1 bay leaf 2 cloves 2 star anise 1 mandarin, peel only 1 Cinnamon stick Pinch nutmeg 5 cardamom pods 4 juniper berries 1 lemongrass stick

Heat the cream, vanilla and sugar. Pour half the mixture onto the egg yolks, mix and pour back into the pan having the rest of the mixture. Heat to 85 ̊C and strain. Add the gelatine and mix with a hand blender. Blend the pistachio to a paste and add to cream.

To garnish Grilled spring onions, brushed with sesame oil Goji berries Place ham hocks in a large container of water and soak overnight in the fridge – this will draw out any excess salt. GIFTING

1>

BUY LESS

It’s almost inevitable families tend to grow in number with more kids being added and new spouses joining in the family charades means your budget needs to increase or get divided by a new number. Here’s how to get around this… Organise ‘Secret Santa’ amongst colleagues, friends and family. Instead of buying each and everyone small – often time useless – gifts, choose (or get allocated to) one person to gift. This gives you more leeway and budget to buy this person something useful and meaningful.

2>

OPT FOR EXPERIENCES INSTEAD OF ‘STUFF’.

What better way to show a person you love them than by spending quality time together. Consider going to the cinema to watch a movie, or treating that person out for a meal at their favourite restaurant or a “staycation” at their favourite hotel (loads of ideas in the Xmas Gift Guide!) Check out what activities and events are going on in town – perhaps a ticket to The Little Mermaid – The Panto Under The Sea, or to view an exhibition or museum. These activities will most likely save you money and reduce the ‘useless’, ‘have-to’ gifts. Let’s be honest, nothing beats memories together.

3>

MAKE SOMETHING

Get in touch with your creative side. Whether you know how to bake, or draw, paint, photograph, make a candle, craft a luxurious face mask or a whipped body butter … There are tons of ideas out there to inspire some top notch DIY action that your gift receiver will love.

4>

6>

BUY LOCAL SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISANS AND DESIGNERS There’s a rapidly growing creative ar tisanal wave in Malta that most likely will present awesome gift ideas for that special someone. Check out jewellery makers, clothes designers, home and lifestyle product makers, ar tists, handicraft makers and so much more. When you’re buying from a local business, it’s likely that the business owner and maker are doing a happy dance! Check out upcoming Christmas markets and Eco Markets, meet local ar tisans and join in the Christmas cheer.

BUY ETHICAL When it comes to shopping for new items, there’s a marvellous growing list of ethically made and sustainable brands out there. Consider products that are made ethically, in workshops and factories where workers’ rights are respected and earn a decent living wage.

BUY PRE-LOVED

There are several brands out there that are doing exceptional work in providing makers the right conditions, and preserving nature’s resources, some even give back by investing in ecological or social projects. Find a brand that is aligned to your values and that of the person you are gifting.

5>

Do I mean second-hand? Yes I do! Check out pre-owned, pre-loved stores that are popping up across the web and in Malta too. Get over the shame around buying second hand items because this is a growing trend and it’s here to stay. Check out LABEL, Malta for luxury pre-owned fashion.

Opt for eco-friendly products – items that are made using sustainable resources and produced in an eco-friendly manner. Always go plastic-free – we’ve lived without it before you know!

“Every time you’re spending money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” So spend consciously this Christmas! For more gift ideas check out the Xmas Gift Guide section in this issue – remember to choose a gift that the person will really need.

Photography : Rio Warner Borg Styling : Sarto Hair : Castillo Hair Make Up - Gia Marie Waits When it rains it pours and you should dance in the rain and get through it,” which is what Miriam Christine did and proves that tough times make you stronger. After taking some time away from the local music industry, singer/songwriter Miriam Christine is back with the release of her fourth studio album, ‘Dil-Mara’, her first in 14 years. The album is a manifestation of personal experiences and is presented in Maltese, bringing together four of the most important elements for Miriam: the voice, the piano, the composition and the poetry. The singer/songwriter is entirely responsible for the music of each respective song, whilst also playing a major role in penning the lyrics, collaborating with lyricists Emil Calleja Bayliss, Joe Julian Farrugia and Rita Pace. Maestro Maurizio Campo - an Italian musician who works closely with several major artists in Italy, as well as the internationally renowned, Sanremo Festival - did the music production. This album is a reflection of the wish that Miriam Christine, and several others in the arts, that aims to preserve our language at a time where the same aforementioned language is encountering several obstacles on a daily basis. Accompanying the launch of the album, there’s also the release of the brand new single ‘Mill-Ghatba ‘l Ġew’, together with a music video entirely shot in another locality in Malta, Birgu. The album tells the journey that led Miriam Christine to becoming the woman that she has become today - a journey that was filled to the brim with a little bit of everything; moments full of love, unexpected success, and a hug when this singer thought that the world had ended. It was also a difficult journey, with moments of sadness, and thoughts of giving up; where the view was that life was full of bitterness. But then, this journey got Miriam to find courage.

UPDATE

Today Miriam knows exactly why she had to go through this journey and she’s thankful for everything she has lived through. Only one thing shines through... love. Miriam’s wish is that through music, and her story, she can be an inspiration to the people who pass through difficult moments in order for them not to give up. Present for the launch of the album, was Honourable Dr. Owen Bonnici, Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, who in his remarks said that “Miriam Christine is giving us a taste of her own story and opens the door on her own genuine feelings which we all share some time or another. She lends her amazing voice to the Maltese language and the result is… wow! It’s an album about love, motherhood, family and looking forward in life!” Get your hands on a copy of the album, ‘Dil-Mara’ online from iTunes, Amazon, Deezer, Apple Music or Spotify. WINTER_19 ISSUE

Beauty has so many forms, and I think that the most beautiful and impor tant thing is confidence and loving oneself. In the aesthetic world, many people come to me to discuss physical issues about themselves. I put myself in the patients’ shoes, listen to their stories and see where these concerns are stemming from. Not everyone who seeks the advice of a Cosmetic Surgeon requires any intervention. Some people need information and reassurance about physical differences they may feel they have. Others are knowledgeable about such differences and wish to do something about them. I always like to know what bothers my patients and why, so that I can work with them depending on their personal needs. It is never a “one size fits all” situation - far from it. My recommendation is that one star ts with the least invasive procedures before embarking on bigger, body-changing surgeries. This gives time for the patient to adjust slowly to the new changes and feel more comfor table with themselves. Moreover, when undergoing new treatments for the first time, I suggest that they are staged, so that one knows what to expect from each and every treatment, and the experience is not overwhelming. Aesthetic Surgery is not to be taken lightly. Even though results can be phenomenal and life changing, they come with a price. They all come with scars, risks and possible complications. Hence, one needs to be in the correct mind set before embarking on any cosmetic procedure. The decision to have the surgery must not be spontaneous, the person must not be passing through a difficult time in his or her life and must not be doing the surgery to please anyone else. This is imperative for a good physical and emotional recovery. Ethical cosmetics has become an impor tant issue nowadays. Patients need to make sure that their doctor is appropriately qualified, so as to avoid

complications and unexpected results. The doctor also needs to provide appropriate follow-ups and be available to treat complications, should any arise. In my experience, discussing one’s concerns with a Plastic Surgeon and having appropriate interventions, can make such a big difference to a person’s wellbeing. Being self-aware and content with one’s physical appearance, which admittedly is our vitrine to the rest of the world, brings out confidence. And a person exhuming confidence is a beautiful one. Everybody deserves that feeling.

The revamp of the showroom allows all architects and design professionals to use the workspace models for their meetings and creates a holistic experience where clients can sample different textures and products first-hand. There is an Acoustics Room to showcase their soundabsorbing features, and an Auditorium, with steppe-like seating and audio-visual facilities. The showroom provides a shop-in-shop home display of brands Technogym and Vitra to inspire architects and designers. Furthermore, Vivendo has expanded their range of customised furniture to showcase how different designs can be adapted to suit multiple needs and configurations.

Vivendo Workspaces’ ultimate aim is to become the partner of choice for fully integrated workspaces, hospitality, and wellness spaces. CEO Chris Gauci has said that “we do not believe in standing still, and letting innovation happen on its own; we believe in making that innovation happen ourselves.” An employee spends one third of their life at work. Creating an engaging workspace is not only a front to keep up with the trends but has a strong link with human and environmental health. Small yet meaningful additions or changes to a workspace can have a ripple of positive affects on the employees’ happiness and ultimately their productivity.
