STYLE REPORT RESPECT YOUR BODY AND YOUR SPHERE Interview: Bav Tailor By Lira Bekbolatova Sustainable designer Bav Tailor talks about her brand, inner ecology and the importance of being conscious.

T

he Bav Tailor brand is a collective fusion of non-conformist clothing of generationless silhouettes and effortless geometrical volumes inspired by design, architecture and Eastern philosophies.

Born in London, Indian by origin Bav Tailor in 2015 launched a sustainable luxury brand for the next ethically aware generation. Upholding the tradition of her grandfather’s great interest in fashion, Bav Tailor represents the true hallmark of authenticity. 100% Made in Italy and a solid 360° sustainability manifesto runs core to her brand ethos.

DEC_’20 ISSUE

STYLE REPORT

‘Respect your body - respect your sphere’. This is your brand’s mantra, can you talk us through it? Yes. It’s about respecting your body through the clothes and the materials that you wear and simultaneously respecting the sphere that surrounds you. I decided to follow this manifesto. And I think it was the same year that the UN Sustainability Development Goals were launched as well. So using that as my basis, and as my guide, I created my own, from the sustainable design to the certified materials, to the transparent production processes and the social contribution. It was a way to communicate sustainability through a product. Do you think your Indian ancestry somehow influenced your brand ethos? My surname is Tailor. My Indian ancestors come from a part of India, which is known for dressmaking. My grandfather had his own atelier as well. So, I think it’s part of my DNA. Your mantra reminds me of one of the yoga step - ahimsa, which means “do not harm”. Yes. Exactly. This is the mantra. >>

What is your fashion all about?

What materials do you typically use?

It’s a fashion that’s generationless. So it’s not about targeting millennials or over 60’s. It’s about someone who is in tune with trying to live more consciously that they are careful about what they eat as well as what they put on their skin.

All of my materials are mostly natural fabrics that can be beneficial to the skin as well. There’s an important wellness factor to the project as well. I’m also trying to communicate and to inspire how one can understand more about the inner ecology. I have a wide range of materials because the base of my research starts with the materials.

DEC_’20 ISSUE

STYLE REPORT

So it’s not the design - it’s the material. So once I see them, that’s when I proceed to create the designs. Materials can range from an actual leaf which is collected sustainably from the Amazon to a recycled frisk fish skin sourced from the fisheries using recycled hydro energy. And then, there are materials which are alternatives to kinds of cotton and silks. I know you also support talented youths, can tell us more about that? Yes, I have a project where I invite artisans or creatives to collaborate. It’s also a way for me to showcase their creative talents. For example, I had an artisan girl from Indonesia - she does beautiful laser weaving techniques. Last season I collaborated with a Roman photographer. It can be an artist in any field. It doesn’t necessarily need to be within fashion. Is this platform related to sustainability as well? Well, I provided one of my artists with offcuts of my materials. So she created a masterpiece dress using that. And the photographer has a photography collection of flowers, and the concept is about spread-

ing love through her photography. So, I used the imagery and printed it in a certified manner on organic silk. So there’s always some fusion between their creativity and how I incorporate it into sustainability. There’s a belief that sustainable fashion is twice as much more expensive than fast fashion. People often ask: ‘why should I spend that much money on a sustainable dress?’ How would you answer that? I think it’s the fashion industry and most importantly, the distributors have to educate the clients. Maybe even some kind of government legislations that have to impose that distributors need to have a certain amount of sustainable brands. Because if the distributors do it, then, for sure, they will request more designers to be sustainable. And that will impose the designers to change their business model. It will just become the norm, you know. There are already a lot of distributors that are significantly ahead of the times and are focusing on this. But unfortunately, there are still a lot of stores that want to pay for a cheap product and implement a considerable markup, which is unnecessary. >>

[ ...“ the base of my research starts with the materials” ... ] DEC_’20 ISSUE

031

STYLE REPORT

So the solution is to educate consumers? Yes. That’s the new way. What has been the impact of COVID-19 on the fashion industry? Many producers got their orders cancelled. I know that there are producers that have a considerable amount of stock backlogged because the global brands aren’t collecting the stock. There are negatives and on the other hand - there are also positives. It’s been a very good period for emerging designers to shine through, especially the sustainable ones. It’s been a challenging situation where we have to to collectively as an industry rethink our systems. Because unfortunately, it was not working and something needed to change. So, you know, I hope that with learning from our experiences, we’ll head into 2021 or with a new vision. We can’t go back to the old ways because it’s just non-existent anymore. We can never go back to the old ways. We need to think of new, innovative ways of moving forward. What do you recommend to a person before shopping? Be curious. If you buy something - it means that you want to be a part of that brand. You want to be a part of the tribe. Ask questions and be curious: how was that product made? Where was it made? What material is this? And what does this brand stand for? What inspires you to do what you do? I have a product to sell, and through the product, I’m able to provide a social contribution. That was the ultimate goal, to be honest, in the very simplified version then. Now, it’s extended to mentoring or communicating about in psychology and wellness. But initially, when I thought of the project in the business sense, it was ‘OK, launch a project that is conscious, sell a product and have some money to give to charity’. I’m a member of the Big Blue Ocean Project in London that helps clean up oceans. I support water charities that provide water to developing countries. So for every item that’s sold a tree will be planted. So it’s just it’s a very personal project for me. And it’s more about giving back rather than just having a business and making a profit. Bav Tailor is a member of British Fashion Council and selected Designer by the Italian Camera Moda Fashion Trust for the project ‘Together for Tomorrow’ and ‘CNMI Designers for the Planet’. She has been awarded the first Taomoda 2020 Eco-Luxury Award, during Taormina Fashion Week; the ‘Conscious Designer’ award by the Arab Fashion Council and nominated Vogue Talent finalist of ‘Who Is On Next 2019, scouting project promoted by Altaroma and Vogue Italia. Interdisciplinary Mediator

Lira Bekbolatova caught up with the renowned Italian artist, to gain an insight into his world and creative journey.

[> Luca Pozzi ]

Luca, you refer to yourself as an” ‘interdisciplinary mediator” spanning the gap between art and quantum physics - two entirely opposing fields. How is this possible?

Words: Lira Bekbolatova

DEC_’20 ISSUE

Things seem distant and incompatible until you decide to go against the trend. I started to imagine art, theoretical and experimental physics could become two sides of the same coin. It evolved from meeting the perfect stranger during my train journey. He advised me to read “Godel Esher and Bach” by Douglas Hofstadter. For me, it was a ‘big bang moment’, the

beginning of a new way of thinking. Honestly, it was my first text I had ever read that connected mathematics, art and music. At the time, I was just 18. I had not started the academy yet, and I had no idea what the future held. But I knew for sure I wanted to find correlations between two extremely distant disciplines - art and physics.

a profession which I feel is more socially recognised. The truth is that I prefer to be a mediator of a field of forces, rather than how an artist conventionally defined.

Sixteen years later, in 2017, I presented at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research [CERN] in Geneva during the Fermi-Lat Spring Collaboration meeting (INFN & NASA. I discussed Tiziano’s “Bacchus and Arianna” Renaissance masterpiece in terms of Multi-Messenger Cosmology to a community of theoretical and experimental physicists. I decided to call myself a “Cross-Disciplinary Mediator “, on the one hand, because I felt the term artist was nebulous and limited. And on the other, because (in a meta-linguistic way) I liked to be associated with

The fact remains what we call the “art world” does not exist. The art world has been artificially created and is continuously changing. It depends on our actions, our courage and our sincerity. One hundred years ago, there were no galleries or fairs. The pioneers of this “new” system believed in “new” tools and invented “new” methods based on “new” emerging needs. Today is the same - we are living in a technological revolution that explores the experience of art and expands it both in time and in space. We are in the middle of a new age based on gravity, multi-mes-

sengers cosmology, quantum computers and artificial intelligence. This Millennial’s generation is experiencing a crucial phase of transition that will reshape the priorities of the system itself. I feel if we limit ourselves in being accepted and using the method that already exists, we will indeed saturate the possibilities and enter into a suffocating competition. Somehow, we would contradict the real meaning of what we are trying to build. The usefulness of research is directly proportional to its ability to feed the system based on the ongoing continual awareness of natural processes. How do you combine art and physics? The actual cross-disciplinary practice starts by interacting personally with the scientific community. It’s a constant process of maintaining relations. Pragmatically speaking, I have collaborated with the Loop Quantum Gravity >>

These include Carlo Rovelli, at the “Center de Physique Théorique “in Marseille; Abhay Ashtekar at The “Institute for Gravitational Physics and Geometry “of the Pennsylvania University; Hermann Nicolai and Daniele Oriti at the “Albert Einstein Institute “of Golm and Laurent Freidel at the “Perimeter Institute “of Waterloo, Ontario. The very first thing I like to do when the opportunity presents is to discuss several hot topics with scientists. We explore why it is essential to understand what gravity is, how the scientific community was born and when an apparent incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity at high energies has appeared. From 2015 I collaborated with the CMS detector community at CERN in Geneva. We discussed the physics of the standard model,

Starting from 2017, I collaborated with The Fermi Telescope Team of INFN (Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics). We discussed the observation of the cosmos beyond the electromagnetic spectrum. The primary difficulty is to distinguish the divulgation aspect from the creative one. Art does not represent science; art unites what appears to be divided, allowing information to flow in unexpected ways. The evidence of these cross-disciplinary interactions, for me already testify the existence of an impalpable network made of connections between people, languages and visions, which is the real subject of my research. The goal of my practice is to verify the probability distribution of information.

I started with photography. I froze a movement as if it was happening on the event horizon of a gigantic black hole. In the “Supersymmetric Partner” series, for example, I jumped in front of real size masterpieces by Renaissance artist Paolo Veronese exhibited all around the world. It’s like a time warp and a sort of teleportation into another space-time coordinate.

You express quantum physics ideas through photographs, installations and performance, right? Yes, I am trying to imagine all of these el-

My work breaks the linearity of deterministic connections and opens up a new suspended dimension of quantum probabilities. This also happens in the “Background inside platform” series, where luminescent sponges soaked in phosphorus paint or other pigments remain in electromagnetic fluctuation on surfaces of mirroring water of different shapes and sizes. Like in the “9 churches 9 columns” installation created for the 2010 Moscow Biennale, or “The Star Platform” for the Marrakech Biennale 2012.

I tried my best to create a bespoke site-specific architectural intervention. I interact directly with the historical potential of which specific environments are changed. That’s the case for “The Grandfather Platform” at Palazzo Magnani in Bologna famous for hosting the room frescoed by the Carracci Brothers with 14 scenes of the foundation of Rome. You once said you are fascinated by the Renaissance period, the Roman Empire and the New Testament. Do you feel these are relevant to our present and our future? I like to think that there is not one single story, but there are many stories all overlapped. And that there is no past present or future but that they are all real simultaneously, I’m a super fan of the single block theory! The only thing that changes is the speed with which you travel them and the angular momentum you decide to apply to your observation. In the Grandfather platform, I created a 5 meters tall infrastructure intended as a sort of zen meditative altar cover with a printed carpet from digital collage. >>

I made an illusionistic horizontal chasm under the spectator’s feet where a majestic black hole deforms the fabric of space and time, accumulating everything in a single ultra-dense point. Perhaps I am fascinated by the Renaissance, the history of the foundation of Rome and the miracles of Jesus because they make me think of the origins. Can you share with us what projects you have in the pipeline? At the moment The “Dragon’s Egg” bronze sculptural device in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). It’s imagined as a time compression parenthesis obtained by connecting a 5.500 years old technic “the bronze casting” with a brand new experimental physics technology called “muonic scintillator”. It’s able to detect the passage, beyond the metallic surface, of otherwise invisible subatomic particles, signalling them with a light impulse. I don’t know exactly how yet, but I would like to make this form of dialogue entirely tangible. [ V ]

After spending 30 years in their farmhouse outside Bolzano, in Northern Italy, and with their children grown up, Josef Ebner and Angela Sabine Staffler found themselves with an abundance of space. They opted to convert part of their property for rent. As a result, they created two apartments in their existing house (where they still live) and a pair of mini-residences in a new building, catering to tourists who make a beeline to the scenic mountains of South Tyrol. Though the couple had no particular goal that architecture should itself be an attraction, recalls Ebner, they wanted ‘something special’. They called in world-class architect Peter Pichler, who had recently established his own

office in Bolzano after working for Zaha Hadid. It’s here the impeccable mirror houses were born. The mirror houses provide a unique opportunity to spend a memorable holiday surrounded by the contemporary architecture of the highest standards, and the most breath-taking landscape and beauty nature can offer. Guests have their small individual apartment and can thoroughly enjoy the experience of living in the middle of nature. A maximum level of privacy for both the client and the residing guest has been taken into consideration throughout Pichler’s design. >>

INTERVIEW: ART

[ Vamp meets the French / Canadian talent, Jean Labourdette, aka Turf One ]

What spurred your interest to follow this creative path?

How did your upbringing influence your work?

I have always painted since I was a little kid… My father was an artist, so I was surrounded by art and creation from a very early age. Around 1989, I started getting involved in the Parisian graffiti scene. I had a strong sense of graphic novels and comics culture, so naturally, I quickly started specialising in figurative stuff, mostly characters. This also led me to begin painting canvases with the guys of my crew at the time. So I started painting canvases, probably in 1990. I’d say my first significant influence was my father; then later-on graffiti culture entered my life and totally revolutionised it, making me “get serious” about art, in a way… I am self-taught and never went to art school. Graffiti was my school and the real start of my career as an artist.

My parents were incredible people and really fostered my artistic inclinations when I was little. I also inherited my love of graphic novels and comics from my dad, which ended up being a decisive factor in the equation. I also used to go to antique stores and flea markets with him a lot, and this is clearly where my fascination for found objects and antiques and their subsequent use in my work comes from...

060

DEC_’20 ISSUE

You’re an exceptionally varied artist- do you have a preferred discipline? Thank you!! As I said, I am self-taught, and all the painting techniques I have developed over the years originally come from graffiti. Ultimately I don’t really see myself as a painter or a sculptor per se,

more as a creative person whose obsession and goal is to try to bring his characters to life by any means necessary! So I’ll go between more sculptural 3-dimensional techniques and some more traditional painterly approaches depending on what I feel suits best that objective depending on the project I am working on... What does your creative process look like? I carry a small sketchbook with me at all times just to be able to capture an idea when it presents itself. I have found that the best ideas, the most inspired ones, usually don’t come to you when you’re looking for them, but rather are on their own schedule, have a life of their own… You always have to be ready for them when they present themselves. >>

labels, I like to give people the freedom to perceive my work in their own unique and subjective way, without telling them what to think or through which lens they should be looking at it… That being said, if I have to sum it up, I like the notion of surreal hyperrealism, but with a pinch of salt if possible.

I’d say I am a wannabe taxidermist !! (laughs) Seriously, I am not good with

What’s the most challenging part of being an artist?

Then, the second stage is to try to express these ideas visually in the best way possible, bringing them to life in the form of a painting or a sculpture. This is the part I do in the studio.

062

I would say being a functional human and part of society at the same time haha…Art can be a rabbit hole and demand most of one’s time, energy, thoughts. It can take over your life! When you have a family, it can be challenging to rationalise that, put limits and make time for everything organically… Making a living as an artist is also one aspect of that overall challenge…

[ ...“I believe in the dynamics of opposites C.G Jung talks about”... ] The requirements of society can be limiting in terms of pure creativity. It’s tricky to maintain a balance between expressing what you have to say as an artist to the fullest of your capacities while at the same time having to rationalise your time and inspiration to put food on the table. It’s an art form in itself. You have been known to focus on three big subjects: the exploration of the hu-

man and animal soul; the reliquary and memento mori; and the contemporary aspect of an imaginary sideshow?- is this still the case? I believe in the dynamics of opposites that C.G Jung talks about. There’s no light without darkness. There’s no life without death. And I feel like it applies for me to my paintings to a certain extent as well. There’s not much of an exciting story to

tell if there is no darkness to it, no dramatic tension. My focus is on the light mostly, but the way I make it come out is by showing the dark too. I guess I am looking for the soul beyond the chaos of existence… Rembrandt is my favourite painter because for me he was painting with emotion, with heart, with love. His paintings are alive, centuries later. >>

Sometimes. It used to be really hard like

15 or 20 years ago. But eventually, I realised that the paintings, like children, need to be allowed to leave the nest to be able to fully live their own life. I am actually very grateful to collectors who “adopt” my creations and give them a home. In my eyes, they are the final ingredient that allows my paintings to become fully alive. It’s a collaboration. The only images I have never been able to sell are the pieces I did of my dogs (who both passed). They are sort of sacred to me

Best of all, though, are the ESPA treatments. Since opening its doors in 1989, the Athenaeum Spa has been a trailblazer in Malta’s luxury health and wellness sector. And it continues to lead the way by bringing the world-renowned, luxury skincare brand ESPA to the island. ESPA products offer a profoundly sensorial experience and provide visible benefits for the health and beauty of your skin. “In partnership with ESPA, Athenaeum offers luxury products and treatments that make the most of natural ingredients and Maltese healing traditions,” says Adrian Attard, the Corinthia Palace’s General Manager. “All treatments on the menu have been carefully crafted to offer relief from today’s high-pressured lifestyle. Guests are invited to let go of tension and feel

enriched, inspired and revived.” Focusing on wellbeing as a journey, Athenaeum’s holistic philosophy is encased in a four-million-euro renovation project. The spa is set in a Mediterranean citrus and herb garden and has been personalised to radiate local character, historic traditions and Corinthia Palace’s unique architecture. While Athenaeum joins a portfolio of other famed ESPA spas – including the flagship ESPA Life at Corinthia London, the Royal Spa at Corinthia Budapest and The Spa at Corinthia Lisbon – its ethos, culture and heritage are firmly its own. “The award-winning design team at Goddard Littlefair in the UK, who worked on the Corinthia landmark hotel in London, as well as Maltabased Quality Projects have created a

celebration of the form and grandeur of authentic Maltese architecture,” says Mr Attard. “The seamless indoor-outdoor experience celebrates local artisans and the serene Mediterranean environment. The spa has been transformed into an idyllic spot in which to focus on body and mind.” Athenaeum Spa and Corinthia Palace itself are an oasis in the centre of Malta. This is where you can get together with family and friends to concentrate on yourselves and each other. To make a full day of it, start with brunch at the grand Villa Corinthia, then forget about life at Athenaeum and, later, treat yourselves to Afternoon Tea and even a Far Eastern dinner at Rickshaw. And if you’re really looking to impress, a five-star overnight stay is at your fingertips.

It’s All About Balance

B R E A S T S U R G E R Y AT P E R S O N A Women seek breast surgery for a wide variety of reasons, the main one being to restore balance in body proportions. Yet, in many cases, they’re not totally sure which breast procedure is right for them. A breast lift does not involve implants. Rather, the surgeon reshapes the existing breast tissue, to lift and tighten the breast. In contrast, an augmentation involves placing silicone implants into the breasts in order to enhance size, shape and volume. We offer a choice of the safest implants on the market today, since we firmly believe that you deserve to reap the benefits of technological evolution. These implants give you full control over size and shape, and are designed to move naturally with you. If a breast enhancement is something that has been on your mind for a while, why not schedule a consultation with one of our Plastic Surgeons at Malta’s leading Cosmetic Surgery Centre.

Any surgical procedure carries risks. Always seek prior advice from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner. Image used for illustration purposes only.

PEOPLE

[ The Big Glitch ] AMBER JONES LOOKS BACK ON A LIFETIME OF DIGITAL DETOXING AND SHARES HER PERSONAL JOURNEY. Flower power. I believe I was lucky enough to be born in the late ’70s which, amongst other things, meant that when I went out, I was unreachable, independent and free. I had long conversations with people I liked and didn’t have to pretend to like anyone I didn’t. Human’s spoke face to face, what your saw was real and genuine. The digital tsunami. Decades later we came to the wave of technology and the oh so indispensable mobile phone. Now, I could be reached at all times. I was messaged, called and traced down like prey. If that wasn’t awful enough, Apps became available, and before I knew it, my conversations were cut short by people staring down into the abyss of Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Tech 1. Social skills 0. Suddenly technology had won, and my social skills had lost. It was curiously unnerving and seeing everyone become so absorbed made me wonder what it was that was so alluring. I succumbed, and it was the beginning of the end of my independence. Suddenly I found I was uploading pictures for people to like and writing things that would make me feel more liked. After all, it has become entirely about how many people liked or commented that make you feel better about yourself. Where are the real people? However, this also meant that a lack of genuine human reaction could make you feel useless and superficial. I started to befriend people I didn’t even like, in the hope that my popularity would increase and when this didn’t work, I felt even more down and insecure. It wasn’t until I took the time to see what other people were posting that I realised that everyone was doing the same thing – like puppets imitating one another… What the heck am I doing, I asked myself? This just isn’t me. This is App is controlling me, advertising on my newsfeed to make money, making me feel like I need to be liked to feel valuable. It was targeting to my likes and preferences. It was no longer a pleasant, enjoyable experience but a way of controlling my mind, thoughts and self-esteem. A sharp retreat I decided to take a break from it for a while only to return to it because I was made to feel that I was weird for not being a

sheep in the flock. This time around however it was going to be by my rules, so I got rid of all the fake followers and made changes to make me feel like I had a say in what I wanted to see and do. But the adverts kept popping up, the annoyingly overly happy statuses were still there, and I was still left feeling empty because everyone seemed to have such perfect lives compared to mine. An awakening. I suddenly realised what a dangerous tool this could be. Had I been younger and easily influenced, I might have felt entirely inadequate, which could have led to mental health issues, and it was only a matter of time before this happened to other naïve users. It’s sad, but it’s real, and yet it’s the most accessible addiction. Don’t be fooled by thinking you’ve got it under control, it’s taken over your life and will continue to do so until you take a stand.
