INTERVIEW

hen perusing the works of Gordon Wilson, it’s challenging to define such a varied creative individual. He is well regarded as one of Scotland’s most exciting contemporary artists; he grew up in Glasgow, where he is now based. Gordon studied at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art and has worked in the art industry for many years as a designer, picture framer and artist. His varied subject matter ranges from quirky portraiture to highly striking land and seascapes, with his deep love of the West Coast of Scotland permeating through his evocative work. Dayna Camilleri Clarke caught up with the artist to find out more.

When did your artistic journey begin? My father was an artist, so you could say it’s in my blood! I had my first paintings exhibited in London when I was sixteen whilst still at secondary school. Upon leaving school, I worked briefly as an artist in a few prominent Glasgow Advertising Agencies whilst studying part-time at Glasgow School Of Art. As a young artist, it’s hard to make a living, so I started my own very successful picture framing business to supplement the difficult years. Thankfully I managed to retire from my framing business about seven years ago to concentrate on my painting career.

INTERVIEW

How would you describe your style? It’s very hard to ‘pigeonhole’ my style. I work almost exclusively in oil paint. However, my subject matter is quite diverse, ranging from Scottish landscapes to still life. I particularly enjoyed painting my ‘old biddy’ characters and Belted Galloway cattle, who regularly find themselves on boats I send on little journeys. I suppose you could call me a ‘Modern Scottish Colourist.’ >>

INTERVIEW

What does your creative process look like? My creative process to an outsider must look hideously chaotic! My studio is full of oil sketches and half-finished paintings of all shapes and sizes. I get bored very easily and am always experimenting with colour and texture. I use paintbrushes, pallet knives and scrapers to get my desired effect. Anything that comes to hand really..this morning, I was using a cutthroat razor! Usually, whilst I’m waiting for one painting to dry, I tend to start another and whilst I’m waiting for those two to dry, I’ll start another and so forth! What keeps driving you forward in your artistic journey? I’m incredibly blessed to earn my living doing what I am passionate about. Every day I’m filled with excitement and can’t wait to head off to my studio. I’m never sure what will happen when I get there, but I’m fairly confident that something’ good’ might transpire with good music and herbal tea as my companions. This keeps driving me on. And also the fact that my exhibition commitments are usually booked up two years in advance!

Photos by Peter Clark

How have you managed during COVID? 2020 didn’t start out terribly well. My studio suffered a devastating flood at the end of February. I lost many paintings, materials and equipment. Shortly after this, Covid struck hard, and all my galleries closed. It was a particularly low point in my life. Luckily my studio is on two floors, so I moved my painting operations upstairs whilst insurance work was carried out. I joke that, as an artist, I have been self-isolating for thirty years, so life during lockdown continued very much as normal for me. Then suddenly my painting sales started to increase! Social media and the internet meant that people were able to decorate their houses by buying art online. 2020 ended up being my busiest yet! >>

INTERVIEW

Do you have a favourite piece? Is it hard to part with your work? All my paintings are like children to me. I love every single one, and when I sell one, I know that someone somewhere will love and cherish it. There is, however, one painting which I sold many years ago, which I regret. I sold it for £2,000 and immediately

realised I’d made a mistake. I tried to buy it back from the client a few years later only to find that he’d been offered £25,000 for it! It still hangs on the wall of his house in Florida! What’s your greatest highlight to date? I’ve had many highlights over the years and

won a number of awards. I’ve exhibited and sold worldwide, including New York and Hong Kong, but I was contacted by a major London Art gallery earlier this year and asked to exhibit with them. So, at the end of September, I will be flying down to London to participate in an exhibition with Thompson’s Gallery in Marylebone. I think this will possibly be a career highlight! >>

027

INTERVIEW

What is your preferred subject matter?

What does 2022 have in store?

As I said before, my subject matter varies. I tend to go through painting ‘phases’. It’s not uncommon to have a few months of a particular subject I’m fixated on. I had a “bee” phase, an “Ailsa Craig” phase; I even had a “decapitated pigs head” phase! I’m currently fixated with my wee Glasgow ‘Biddy’ (old lady), whom I usually paint on the bow of a boat with a Belted Galloway cow as her companion and a seagull on her head!

I’m always booked up a year in advance. I usually do two solo exhibitions per year and take part in various group and “featured artist” exhibitions, so 2022 is full. I’m even partially booked for shows in 2023! I sometimes have to go onto my own website to remind myself of the commitments I have! In 2022 I also intend to promote my range of limited edition giclée prints to purchase directly from my website. [ V ]

What do you love most about your profession?

For more information about Gordon’s latest work, visit www.gordonwilsonart.com

There are many aspects of my profession which I love. I love the freedom it gives me to create. The hours are pretty fantastic too! Most of all, I love the people it brings me into contact with! It is an utter joy and total privilege to meet patrons and clients who love my work. It makes everything I do worthwhile.

[WALKING ON WATER] THE MODERN FLOATING CHURCH THE DIOCESE OF LONDON HAS REALISED ITS VISION FOR THE ST COLUMBA EAST LONDON COMMUNITY, WITH GENESIS: A NEW, WIDE-BEAM CANAL BOAT CROWNED WITH AN INNOVATIVE POP-UP ROOF, DESIGNED BY LONDON-BASED ARCHITECTS DENIZEN WORKS. THE BARGE, COMMISSIONED AS A MOBILE ASSEMBLY SPACE, IS MOORED ON THE RIVER LEE NAVIGATION ALONGSIDE HERE EAST AT QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK, WHERE IT WILL REMAIN FOR THREE TO FIVE YEARS BEFORE REACHING OTHER CANALSIDE COMMUNITIES.

eveloped in close collaboration with Turks Shipyard and naval architect Tony Tucker, Genesis is conceived as a modern-day mission, developing links with growing communities living around the canal in East London over the next 25 years. Its mobility and flexibility of programme will ensure lasting benefits to the diverse neighbourhoods at key regeneration sites, which include Sweetwater, Eastwick and Hackney Wick. As well as serving as a space for a church, the barge is designed with a bespoke and adaptable interior to accommodate a wide range of community activities and services, including parent and toddler groups, pilates classes and art classes, interfaith celebrations, lunch and supper clubs, live music, employment training, support workshops and counselling.

Christened Genesis after the first book of the Bible, and alluding to a narrative of creation, the boat will initially serve the two existing parishes of St Paul Old Ford and St Mary of Eton in the Stepney Episcopal Area, with the ambition to reach new communities and bridge shifting parishes in the areas of the Diocese of London undergoing urban growth or change. Named St Columba East, this new community will be led by the Reverend Dave Pilkington, who was ordained in June 2019 and served on Genesis’ predecessor, the interim vessel Elsdale II. Denizen Works’ innovative design features a kinetic roof inspired by organ bellows. It has been crafted from concertinaed, translucent sailcloth, and is lined with LED lights and powered by hydraulic rams. When fully raised, the roof will transform the barge from compact and low-lying, allowing it to pass beneath bridges, expanding into an illumi-

nated beacon designed to capture attention and attract footfall to the mission. Operated by the touch of a button, in its raised position it increases the head height of the barge to 3.6m at its highest point, creating a dramatic interior which is accessible to all. The floating hub is boarded midship; on one side of the entrance is the main assembly space, with services (kitchen, office and toilet) towards the rear of the barge. Inside, Denizen Works has created an elegant and seamless interior of light plywood walls and green linoleum floor. The expansive assembly space under the kinetic roof is designed to take a capacity of 40 people seated and up to 60 passengers when stationary. It has built-in Valchromat benches providing seating and storage along the perimeter of the room, and is fitted with marine-style bulkhead lights to create a cosy atmosphere. Designed with flexibility to accommodate an array of activities, Genesis will also be available for private hire and for use by local schools, to ensure that it is a self-sustaining asset to the communities it serves.

As a mixed-use faith and community project, we feel the boat could be a first step in our thinking about how communities can continue to be served as they grow and move away from traditional locations and building types. Most of all, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when a brave client with an exciting brief believes in an ambitious design team.”

unique resource that will inspire new and creative ministry in communities throughout East London. It is only the beginning for the vessel, Genesis, which starts its journey in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park but will move along the canals of East London in the years to come, inspiring dynamic religious growth across this diverse and ever-changing city. I would like to thank all those involved in the project: from those at the Diocese who conceived of the idea, to the funders, the imaginative architects at Denizen Works, those at Turks Boatyard who worked so

hard to perfect the vessel and of course, to those from the parishes of St Paul Old Ford and St Mary of Eton who have been working with the community to lay the groundwork for this special day.” The Rev Dave Pilkington concluded, “The sight of Genesis on the banks of the River Lee Navigation is fantastic. With so many changes happening in Hackney Wick and Fish Island, we must constantly seek ways to help build community, so I am pleased to report that St Columba East is a community going from strength to strength. With Genesis now in situ we can look forward to the next phase of growth, now with a space to support our desire for action, reflection and contemplation.

Despite the milestone of delivery being met, current circumstances require that we take the necessary steps to manage risk and protect people before opening our doors. We will undertake this with the careful consideration it requires.” Denizen Works is a collaborative studio based in London and Glasgow, developing projects of different scales and typologies. Since its inception in 2011, the practice has worked on a wide range of projects, from a mobile sauna in Finland to a teahouse in the foothills of Mount Everest. Current work includes a vertical

gallery on the north coast of Scotland for the National Trust for Scotland; 70 homes for Brick By Brick in Croydon; and numerous new- build houses across the UK. Denizen Works has won multiple awards, including the RIBA 2014 Stephen Lawrence Prize for House No.7, and has been published internationally. The practice was included in the Architecture Foundation book “New Architects 3”, which recognises the best 100 practices established within the last decade. [ V ]

What happens when classical art and mythology means modern reality? Vamp set off on a heady adventure to find out. The result? Visual artist and photographer Karolina Skorek will undeniably leave an impression on your mind for some time to come. Dayna Camilleri Clarke caught up with the world-renowned artist to find out more. Hi Karolina, thanks for chatting with us! Your work is so unique. Tell us what spurred your interest to follow this creative path? I think I was always drawn to art. Since childhood, I would rather spend hours painting and drawing than playing with other kids. My parents were always exceptionally supportive, which enabled me to pursue my passion from a young 046

age. The only thing they always asked in return was that I do study other things as well (that’s why I speak three languages and have a passion for reading) How did your upbringing influence your work? As I grew up in Poland in the 80s, I love the aesthetic of that time. Being a kid at that time also taught me to think outside the box- we didn’t have much (shops were almost empty), so we had to create the toys. My favourite dolls house was made out of a giant cardboard box, and it is incredible looking back now in a world where everything is so readily available. But yes, now when I need a prop or a backdrop, I don’t think where to buy it- my first thought is “How do I make it?” and it is handy. I can create couture dresses

from mesh and hot glue if I have to. My family was supportive of my art choices from early school age. Still, they did expect me to be good at all other subjects in school, so I could only immerse myself in art, art history and philosophy after graduating from high school. You’re an exceptionally varied artist; do you have a preferred discipline? To be honest, not really. I love the infinite possibilities of digital photography mixed with Photoshop. Yet, the ability to create art in a non-digital way is impressive and stimulates my brain and creativity in a totally different way. >>

INTERVIEW

What does your creative process look like? For the art pieces, it starts with a glass of wine or a hot mug of earl grey and a spark of creativity, honestly. I just see the images before I create them. After the idea comes to me, I draw it out. I create a mood board for anyone else who is taking part in the shoot. Then I make the props, the backgrounds sometimes dresses. When it comes to shooting - I work pretty fast, with everything planned before knowing what I need to do. After the shoot, I usually let the material sit on my computer for a couple of days, so I come back to it fresh with no memory of my “favourite shots” from the session. And then it is hours of editing with good music and tea. How would you describe your style at the moment? ‘Magical Realism.’ A mixture of Old Masters Painting with a surreal twist. I remember someone once said it looks like what would happen if Caravaggio got a camera and photoshop instead of oil paints. What’s the most challenging part of being both a visual artist and a photographer? Not comparing yourself to other artists. With the digital age, it is easy to lose yourself scrolling through Instagram, seeing all those fantastic works of others, and falling into the game of comparing yourself to others, but this isn’t the way. I am on my path, and they are on theirs. We don’t know what shaped us to be where we are now, so let us not compare and compete. I wish more artists were supportive of each other. There is an amazing community of photographers and digital creators that I am in right now, but I find it surprising that it is not the norm. >>

Maranza has a significant agricultural background and the project location is augmented by its unique scenery and impressive panoramic views of the Dolomites Mountains. The structure is fragmented into four shifted volumes which break down the scale of the entire system while at the same time respects the scale of the surrounding buildings. The composition was inspired by the region’s vernacular architecture and the classic wooden barn, reinventing a contemporary reinterpretation of this typology. Interestingly, the curved shape of the exoskeleton façade is inspired by the pitchfork used by local farmers. The interiors are simple and functional, forming a timeless Alpine style, with rooms enjoying the incredible views of the Dolomites – the restaurant on the entrance level, which is located at the top, the 14 hotel rooms and 16 suites (all with their private loggia or terrace) and the wellness area on the lowest level. >>

THE ROOF “There’s a special feeling you get on a veranda that you just can’t get anywhere else.”- Haruki Murakami.

Located on the roof of a 12 storey building of a duplex apartment in Sopan Baug, Pune, India, this space was conceptualized as a ‘Veranda’. (Hindi meaning: A transitional space between public and private area or, between a house and a street). A concept, which truly conjures up an image of a welcoming social space meant for all. >>

HITTING THE ROOF

Traditionally, verandas have always been an integral part of our homes. However, in recent years, to a certain degree forgotten and disappeared. A veranda was always an element central to making our houses into homes, an accidental space for long conversations, a place for one to relax and unwind. But, the ‘Veranda on the Roof’ is no accidental space. On the contrary, it is an intentional space designed to keep in mind the family occupants and their clear understanding of a special place they wanted to add to their home. This is a thoughtful space crafted from their lifestyle, which revolves around books, food and plants. Hence, this ‘Veranda on the Roof’ houses a library and a pantry, which extend into a terrace, or in other words, parts of terrace which are covered to accommodate a reading nook and a pantry.

HITTING THE ROOF

The design intends a play on the senses as one approaches the place through a wooden staircase from the living room below. The existing walls of the staircase were broken down, and the roof was created to open up the space and get a better connection. This enabled us to make the Veranda into an extension to the main house below while allowing the two levels to engage in a dialogue. Bold earthy undertones of the cement textured walls and Teak wood furniture are used to set the tone of this space. The roof library overlooks the terrace garden through a wooden glass-panelled façade, which gives a notion of an enclosure that can open up completely, blurring the boundaries of the inside from the outside. >>

Similarly, a lot of elements such as the door handle, door stopper, tower bolts, drawer handles are custom designed to follow this language with the notion to fade away.

The low-on-clutter, minimal furniture allows for easy movement. The library unit is designed to be understated in its form to reduce its visual impact consciously. For example, a metal staircase hung from stainless steel wires on one end and anchored

A reading nook, which sits along the waterfall and a lotus pond within it, is a tranquil setting to indulge in a piece of literature with the garden partly screening it. The Veranda on the roof can not only overlook the exotic view of a racecourse but also be able to create a world within its own, where one can immerse and indulge in the pleasures of one’s seeking. Veranda on the Roof turns as a refuge, where the shifting contexts have created new meanings. [ V ]

rtist and designer Stephanie Borg® is renowned for combining local traditions with contemporary creativity in her range of artworks and products. In her latest Nwar Blue Blossom Collection, Stephanie merges her passion for the Malta Tile patterns and Wrought Iron designs into a vibrant collection that is as blue as the Mediterranean Sea and sky. The Nwar Concept is made up of a tableware and homeware collection together with the new limited edition silk scarf, and the tablescape and stationery services for weddings & events. The Concept & Inspiration Nwar means blossom in Maltese, the sprouting of the flower into the fruit. Blossoms, sprouts and flowers are often depicted on local cement tiles and found intertwined on beautiful wrought ironwork as seen on traditional Maltese façades. The visual strength of the bold graphics in a purposely mixed hue of blue contrast sharply against the sparkling white background bringing to life your table and home set-up. The Nwar Collection is an interplay of patterns and curved lines offering a fashionable feast for your home through a variety of decorative and useful items. Be inspired to create a different tablescape each time with the mix and match of designs hand-painted on the dinner plates available in four different sizes where each plate size is offered in 3 different designs. The same plates can be styled as wall art and décor. Cups and saucers, trays as well as textiles complement the range.

You’ve probably noticed them in small groups scouring the hillsides for mushrooms and wild-growing herbs, the foragers. Over the last few years foraging has become increasingly popular and today, has become a respected source of flavour in mixology. “Foraging is the collection of anything that grows wildly. You could go mushroom hunting, or forage in a coastal area along the rocks during low tide, see what you can find in the mountains – there are so many options – and honestly, if you’re into flavour it’s probably the coolest thing to do”, explains Caitlin Hill, Rémy Cointreau Prestige Brand Ambassador Africa, India & the Middle East.

Keep You

[ THE PERFECT JOB DOESNT EXIST–AN EXC

Caitlin has worn many hats before joining Rémy Cointreau; gin bar owner, mixologist and expert forager. She spent some time with us to explore foraging, flavour and tells us how to make her twist on a classic gin cocktail, the Bramble, using The Botanist gin. The Botanist gin is a very special member of the Rémy Cointreau family, and one Caitlin had the privilege to encounter personally while managing a Cape Town gin bar. It was through this experience that she was introduced to foraging. “One of my favourite experiences in the world was going foraging for the first time. It happened a few years ago when I was approached by the then local ambassador of Rémy Cointreau, to participate in a competition which included a foraging experience at Veld and Sea in Scarborough, in the Western Cape of South Africa. To have done my first foraging experience in one of the most densely populated botanical kingdoms in the world was eye opening – there are so many flavours available! There is so much more flavour in the wild than what we get packaged for us in supermarkets. This experience sparked my interest in The Botanist. It is important to take only what you need though, making sure that the plants that you’re picking from can regenerate and that the birds and bees can continue to use the plant as well. You also need to be aware of restrictions in various areas. While you can forage in urban areas for example but must be careful not to pick plant material from someone’s garden without permission. 074

What in your opinion makes The Botanist stand out from other gins? At peak we were stocking 185 different gins at our bar, and as a brand it’s very difficult to stand out in that kind of environment. That said, The Botanist is unique in the way that the bottle looks and feels. Then, once you dive into the product a bit more and you get to know the history of the brand and the fact that it’s made up of nine core botanicals and 22 foraged botanicals that grow on Islay, the island in West Scotland where the gin is distilled, you realise how special it is. The terroir there is singular, and you can’t reproduce it anywhere else in the world. How do you incorporate your foraged material into a cocktail? It takes a lot of trial and error, I’m not gonna lie, but once you’ve worked with a few kinds of foraged materials you’ll find it’s as sim-

ple as taking mushrooms and infusing that into the spirit that you want to work with or making a bitters out of it. The sky is the limit; you could take fresh herbs or fruits and make syrups from it. You could turn it into a juice and incorporate it that way. You can even just use the fresh herb or fruit directly in the cocktail, like a martini that’s stirred with peppery wild rocket. The fresher something is, the more you’re going to get out of it. It also definitely depends on what you want to create and how much time you’re willing to spend on it; if you want to infuse something, you’re probably going to have to wait a few days, or sometimes up to a couple of weeks. If you’re just beginning start with something simple by just incorporating wild botanicals into a cocktail, or even as the garnish for your gin and tonic.

and shaking or stirring it in your cocktail. It really depends on the style of cocktail that you want to make. What’s the easiest way to incorporate foraged botanicals into a cocktail? We’re talking about gin cocktails so let’s take a classic example, the G&T. I always take The Botanist and pop it into a glass with one or two, maybe three different botanicals. Try not to add too many because the gin itself is already complex. For instance, I love orange and fresh mint with my Botanist. I’ll put those into the glass, give it a light muddle, add ice and top it off with tonic water. I always suggest tonic water that has less sugar, because the sugar is going to mask the flavours you’re going to add to the drink. You can even go half tonic water, half soda if you don’t have access to a low sugar tonic. Another option would be to make a simple syrup where you are taking equal parts, sugar, and water, and you could incorporate some of the foraged botanicals into it and cook the mixture on the stove. The heat will release the flavour, and then you let that cool and you can use it in a variety of different gin cocktails. You mentioned loving the combination of mint and orange with your Botanist gin. Any other flavours you’d recommend?

You’ve prepared a foraged cocktail especially for Vamp readers. What have you added, and importantly, how? I began with a bit of research as to which botanicals are prolific in terms of foraging in Malta. The two kinds that spoke to me the most are the different types of wild rockets that are available year-round, as well as nasturtiums. I’m very familiar with nasturtiums from foraging in South Africa, and always inspired by how insanely intense the flavour is; it’s got this kind of peppery, mustardy effect in the flower as well as the leaves. I then decided to incorporate these two botanicals into a classic gin cocktail called the Bramble. This cocktail normally requires Crème de mûre, which is a blackberry liqueur, and I know that blackberries grow prolifically in Malta.

So, I’m going to incorporate the herbs when I’m shaking the cocktail, then I will pour the Crème de mûre over the drink, and then we’ll garnish it with a nasturtium flower. How do you decide how best to incorporate foraged flavours into a cocktail? You start by deciding what kind of cocktail you want to create; what is the flavour profile of the spirit that you’re working with, is the cocktail going to be paired with something to eat? Is it a daytime occasion or a night-time occasion? There are many different factors that you need to consider when designing a cocktail. More than anything, I think what’s important when using foraged ingredients, is the season. What is available to you? Once you’ve decided on a spirit and you’ve foraged your botanicals you can decide if you want to infuse, or if you want to use just the wild herb

Whenever I’m using any foraged botanicals, I try to add elements of citrus to it, whether that be through the foraged botanical, say for instance, sorrel which is super citrusy, or by adding in like a lemon, a lime, grapefruit or an orange. Let’s get into the making of the cocktail you’ve selected for Vamp, The Mediterranean Bramble. It’s a twist on a classic gin cocktail called The Bramble which was designed by Dick Bradsell in London in the eighties. It consists of a combination of gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and Crème de mûre. In this version, I’m incorporating fresh, wild rocket and nasturtiums, both the flowers and leaves. Essentially you shake up the gin, the lemon and the simple syrup with the fresh botanicals, pour that over some crushed ice and then top it off with the blackberry liqueur. Finish it off with a beautiful nasturtium flower as a garnish and you’re good to go! >>

WILD MEDITERRANEAN BRAMBLE Ingredients: 45ml The Botanist gin 20ml Fresh lemon juice 20ml Simple syrup 20ml Crème de Mûre Handful of wild rocket Handful of nasturtium flowers and leaves Nasturtium flower and leaf for garnish The equipment: Glass: Old fashioned glass/tumbler Equipment needed: jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer and bar spoon Making the cocktail: Combine all the ingredients together in your cocktail shaker. Add ice and give it a few hard shakes until the shaker is too cold to hold. Place a few ice blocks in your tumbler and, using the strainer, strain the liquid into the glass. Pour in the Crème de mûre over the back of a cocktail spoon to gain a layered effect (see how to do it in the video), and then add a nasturtium flower as garnish. Suggested side bars: The Botanist Gin The Botanist is an artisanal Islay gin made by Bruichladdich Distillery. It is one of two gins made on Islay, and is distinctive for its 22 hand-foraged Islay botanicals that are added to nine core gin aromatics. Cocktail Terminology used for this cocktail: Infuse: A way to impart flavour into a liquid by soaking herbs, spices or fruits in it for a period of time. Jigger: A conical measuring tool used to make single drinks. These are normally 45ml but can vary from 15ml to 60ml. Muddling: Using a blunt tool, called a muddler, to mash fruits, sugar or herbs into a drink to impart it’s flavours.

Shaken: Adding the cocktail mix and ice to a shaker and shaking it swiftly – this process chills the cocktail and is a more thorough method of mixing than stirring. Note that it can leave certain ingredients foamy and cloudy. Simple Syrup: This basic ingredient of a variety of cocktails is essentially sugar dissolved in water. A botanical can also be

added to it. Using simple syrups ensures that you won’t have granules of sugar at the bottom of the cocktail glass. Bitters: Used in cocktails like old fashioned Martinis, bitters is made of either glycerin or high-proof alcohol mixed with a blend of leaves, roots, bark, herbs etc.

HOLISTIC

By Isabelle Muscat

Natural Awakenings Maybe you’ve heard of Reiki but don’t quite know what it is. Perhaps you’re considering Reiki but aren’t sure whether it’s right for you. Whatever your questions, Isabelle Muscat is here to help. She walks team Vamp through the basics of Reiki — a safe, gentle, non-invasive form of natural hands-on, energy-based healing — and what it can do for your body. In 2007, Isabelle first introduced herself to the world of Health and Holistic Wellness when passing through a challenging period in her life. Her passion in the subject continued to evolve when she met a special Reiki Master who mentored her all the way into energy healing. After going through a separation, her life turned in another direction, and when her parents were diagnosed with several health issues. The challenges and emotional turmoil throughout this period were many. Thankfully, Isabelle was given an opportunity to visit Bali, where she met an extraordinary Guru, namely Prabhu Darmayasa, from the Divine Live Society in Indonesia, Bali, in 2011, where she was introduced to the art of Angka Meditation. After this transformational visit, Isabelle expanded her knowledge in Mindfulness and various energy healing practices such as Reiki, Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candle Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Non-Medical Nutrition, Therapeutic Massage Treatments, Thai Yoga Massage, YOGA and YOGA teacher training. What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”, based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki has two meanings. Rei is the Universal Life Energy that is the spark in every atom of the Universe. Ki (in Chinese it is referred to as “Chi” & Prana in Sanskrit) is our Vital Life Force. The free and balanced flow of Ki is the cause of good health.Ki flows within the physical body through pathways called meridians and around us in a field of energy called the aura. Ki nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting vital functions.

Has it changed you and your practice? Reiki has undoubtedly changed me in many ways. It has been and still forms part of my spiritual development, and I long daily to use and share this healing therapy in my daily life and therapeutic practice. Nowadays, I add this treatment into one of my services, especially where I assess that a client requires further emotional support and healing apart from the physical treatment. Have you seen it make a difference to people? I have seen many beautiful souls heal and change; this is one of my greatest accomplishments, especially feeling people’s aura evolve throughout the sessions. Reiki does not change the person during the session only, but every single day until the person decides otherwise for one reason or another. What would you say to those that are sceptical of such practices? “Have you tried this therapy? If yes, what was your experience? If no, I suggest you try it out before you decide and will look forward to your feedback afterwards.”

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

I believe every person can be sceptical to any treatment, not just Reiki. However, when a person is ready for a change, either physical or emotional, the practitioner will appear and that every person will blossom at their own pace.

How did you come to discover Reiki?

Do you think there is space for Reiki in today’s modern world? Is it becoming more popular?

I discovered Reiki when I was following the Non-Medical Nutrition course, where I met my Reiki Master, who guided me throughout this beautiful therapy. She taught me how to Master Reiki and how to use Reiki to cope with daily life challenges.

I truly wish that more people experience the beauty of this healing therapy. Nonetheless, I confirm that it is becoming more popular, and people are becoming aware that complementary therapies such as Reiki do work!
