anit Peleg is a fashion designer and a pioneer in 3D printed fashion. In 2015, she made international headlines for being the first designer in the world to create an entire collection using desktop 3D home printers for her graduate project at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. In 2016, she was invited by the Paralympic Games to design a 3D-printed dress for Amy Purdy, a double-leg amputee dancer, who performed at the Opening Ceremony. Peleg is also a popular TED speaker and has been featured in world-renowned publications such as Vogue, The New York

Times, and Women’s Wear Daily. In 2018, she was recognized as one of Europe’s Top Women in Tech by Forbes. In 2019, the BBC named her as one of the 100 most inspiring and influential women in the world. Peleg believes that 3D printing opens up fascinating new opportunities in fashion and wants to inspire future generations of designers to dream big. She also believes that this new technology can drastically reduce waste and pollution, thus providing a more sustainable, hopeful alternative for the future. >>

Liberty Leading The People – 2015 The first RTW 3D printed fashion collection printed at home. “As part of my graduate collection for the Fashion Design degree at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, I printed an entire fashion collection using desktop 3D printers. The collection has 5 looks and was printed using FilaFlex filaments & Witbox home printers. The research took 9 months, and the collection itself took more than 2000 hours to print, at about 400 hours per outfit. I was helped by the Tel Aviv based 3D printing “makers” community. The textile designs were inspired by Andreas Bastian’s Mesostructured Cellular Materials. By printing these structures with soft materials, I created new textiles that I could design fashion with.” >>

The ‘Imagine’ 3d Printed Bomber Jacket The ‘Imagine’ jacket is part of Peleg’s second 3D printed collection, ‘The Birth of Venus’. This is the world’s very first RTW 3D printed garment available to buy online. As every individual jacket takes roughly 100 hours to print, the Imagine jacket is part of a limited edition of just 100 pieces. Every jacket is numbered and it retails at $1,500. The jacket is printed-to-order and can be customised and personalized on Danit’s website. What’s more the jackets will be printed in Spain and assembled and shipped from Tel Aviv, Israel. The jacket’s exterior is 100% 3D printed and is attached to a fabric lining. It is also possible to choose a word to be 3D printed on the back of the jacket and customers can personalize the jacket by selecting a word of their choice to be 3D printed on the back of the jacket. To ensure the jacket fits perfectly, Danit will hold a personal virtual fitting session for every order using a special app called Nettelo. Unlike traditional production, the process of 3D printing the jacket produces zero waste and no extra materials. Regarding this collection Peleg stated “Printing this collection was three times faster than my first collection thanks to advancement in printing technology.”

T

he Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Garden) is a stunning two-and-a-half acre botanical garden and artist’s landscape garden in Marrakech, Morocco. It was created by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over almost forty years, starting in 1923.

The garden adored by global fashion designers and artists alike.

For those not in the know, Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) was a French orientalist painter and son of the famous Art Nouveau furniture designer Louis Majorelle. He arrived in Morocco in 1917, invited by the French Resident-General, Marshal Lyautey. Majorelle was enchanted by Marrakech. In 1923, he decided to live there, purchasing a vast palm grove that would become the Jardin Majorelle we know today. >>

In 1931, he commissioned the architect, Paul Sinoir, to build an artist’s studio in the Art Deco style; its walls were painted in “Majorelle Blue”. Around it, he designed a garden, a living work of art composed of exotic plants and rare species collected during his worldwide travels. He opened his garden to the public in 1947, but it fell into abandon after his death in 1962. Fortunately though, four years after the death of Jacques Majorelle, French fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent and long-term business partner Pierre Bergé visited Jardin Majorelle and instantly fell in love with it. So, when they heard of the plans to bulldoze the entire place and turn it into a hotel complex, they decided to purchase Jardin Majorelle and restore it. They were careful to stay true to Majorelle’s vision, concentrating on enhancing the garden’s features rather than changing them. They also introduced an additional 165 plant species, installed an automatic irrigation system and employed a team of 20 gardeners to help maintain the grounds. The Gardens Today After the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, Pierre Bergé donated the Jardin Majorelle to the Foundation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent. The Foundation Jardin Majorelle

was established at this time. In addition, a memorial to the world-renowned French fashion designer was built in the garden. The foundation’s resources were then used to establish the Berber Museum, this was inaugurated in December 2011, and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, opened in October 2017. The foundation’s profits are entirely reinvested in Morocco to finance cultural, educational and social initiatives.

Today, the garden and villa complex is open to the public. The villa houses the Berber Museum, and in 2017 the Yves Saint Laurent Museum opened nearby. The Jardin Majorelle also includes a bookstore, café and boutique. When Yves Saint-Laurent died in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the rose garden at Jardin Majorelle, and two years after his passing, the road on which the gardens are located was renamed the ‘Rue Yves Saint Laurent’ in his honour. >>

Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, which opened its doors in the fall of 2017, is a vibrant cultural centre built around a central exhibition hall that permanently showcases the renowned couturier’s work. Much more than a simple retrospective of the iconic dresses YSL designed, one is led on a journey, with its focal point in Marrakech, through the many themes that inspired him. The fifty or so magnificent garments displayed, many rarely seen by the public, offer us an original reading of Yves Saint Laurent’s oeuvre and his importance to the history of fashion. The dresses and other haute couture pieces are rotated every ten months to ensure their conservation and offer the visitor a panorama that evolves regularly.

The mYSLm also includes a hall for temporary exhibitions, a photography gallery, an auditorium, a research library, a bookshop and a café-restaurant. The basement of the building houses the museum’s collection and a state-of-the-art preventive conservation centre. The hall used for temporary exhibitions at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech was conceived as a cultural and artistic showcase. It is where the museum displays talent from all over the world, with a special emphasis on contemporary Moroccan artists. BUILT ON Vamp editor Dayna Camilleri Clarke caught up with Gabriella DeGaetano to discuss the store everyone is talking about. STORJA STORE was founded in 2020, a dream come true out of necessity and hardships. The store encompasses a hand-selected collection sourced over the years, from apparel to homeware. Having worked in the art, design and retail sectors, Gabriella explains that the vision was to create an online lifestyle curated space for the conscious consumer. The focus is to showcase artists, designers and establishments which have mastered their métier and shaped our history and future. Where did the idea for STORJA STORE come from? I have always dreamt of owning my own store and having a workshop, but I had never taken the plunge. STORJA STORE was born out of necessity; I was jobless but knew that I had an old laptop, a good camera and lots of creative friends, which helped me make my dream a reality. What inspires you on your creative journey? I love to learn from masters of their craft; they inspire me and drive me to challenge myself every day. The sheer amount of talent is everywhere if we look for it. My work and life are driven by sus-

tainability; waste for me is something that’s not acceptable. As a creative, I am responsible for brainstorming and finding solutions to reduce it through upcycling, restoration and repair. That’s where the creativity kicks in. What do you love about this work? I love searching for items, researching the history, and asking about the background story on how it was sourced initially. Most of all, saving items that would have otherwise ended up in landfills and lost forever. Not one day is the same, and it’s a total labour of love. Do you have a favourite piece? (or any pieces with an interesting backstory, perhaps!) I once went to have a look at an old bar in Sliema, which was going for free; once I got there, I realised the bar would be a bit too big for me even to consider taking due to lack of space. So I talked to the two ladies to see if they had anything else they wanted to get rid of, and I bought a beautiful large framed map of Malta and two swivel chairs that I have yet to upholster. All the items are made in Malta, which, for me, because of the rarity, makes them true gems. >>

practices, I really do think that the future is preloved. Tell us more about the workshops! I studied both Fine Art and Textile Design. We were taught via ‘laboratori’ or departments specialising in different practical skills, which is essential to learning. Workshops are a way of passing my knowledge on to others, and I hope, in turn, they will pass it on to someone else. What would be your advice for anyone who is considering starting restoration? Probably the opposite of what I am doing! I would say specialisation is important. I think sometimes people get confused because I do so many different things. What projects do you have in the pipeline for 2022? I definitely want to work on a Children’s book, so this idea will hopefully be realised by the end of the year. I am also collaborating with a local screen printing artist, Aprille Zammit, on some limited edition prints. I will be popping up at two confirmed locations: Earth Day Green Fair on 23-24 April followed by Nice Things Market at a dedicated Vintage Space at Splendid Hotel on the 7-8 May. The ultimate dream would be to convert a dilapidated building into a

I envision this building as a functional creative multifunctional space with an on-site repair shop, but that will need some more time, money and planning, so until then, stay tuned! Where do you source such interesting items? As an avid collector myself, I have been searching for treasures across the globe for a while. I mainly source my items from Flea Markets, Charity Shops, Various Online Selling Platforms or even word of mouth. Do you feel there is interest locally? I think there is an interest and appreciation for historically important items. I think even more so because every item has a story, and the fact that it’s been preloved and has survived the test of time makes these items unique. I think the market is smaller here than it would be in the UK (as that’s where I lived before returning to Malta), where the audience is much larger. Still, I believe as people become more aware of sustainable

F

inn Stone was born in 1971. Moulded by his Irish parentage, Finn’s career has been driven by his zest for life, resulting in an unstoppable, spontaneous, creative drive. For those not in the know, Finn is a creative and contemporary designer - he is one of the UK’s leading makers of fibreglass

furniture, mostly known for his ‘Ball Chair’, a global bestseller. Stone demonstrates an extraordinary level of enthusiasm and energy and appears to have an inexhaustible reserve of inspiration, resulting in the most unusual and diverse artworks created from a multitude of disciplines. An indisputable master of mediums, Stone’s work rejects the banal and instead re-imag-

ines all aspects of life to mirror his surreal imagination. After studying Ceramics for his Degree, Stone kick-started his career in 1999 with the “Ball Chair”. Constantly experimenting and exploring different mediums has led to what Stone describes as a “Battle between control and excess”, balancing spontaneous creation with creative control. >>

FINN STONE

Finn Stone explores various mediums in his art, but the works that appear to garner most recognition are his paintings created from paintbrushes; many of these are famous paintings by the likes of Van Gogh and Da Vinci, including portraits of Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol.

028

S/S_’22 ISSUE 50

His other works feature a similar sense of humour — a pig with a police stripe and the word ‘pigs’ across its flank and a spotted shark inside a vitrine referencing two of Damien Hirst’s signature pieces. Stone’s studio is a physical map of his creative mind containing many of the weird

and wonderful creations from his 22 years in the art world. Many of his works have an underlying element of sculpture. His use of complex or found objects led to a series of famous historical art paintings, which were reinterpreted with paintbrushes as the canvas. >>

FINN STONE

As well as his design products, Stone creates unique one-off, often sculptural artworks which are ‘tongue in cheek’, and laced with humour; his flamboyance and overzealous imagination resonate throughout his work. Stone uses materials such as aluminium and fibreglass and more mundane, everyday household items and toys such as Lego and toy cars. The depth of Stone’s skill and technique in pieces such as Vincent van Gogh (2016), a mixture of oils and cut paintbrushes set onboard to recreate Self-Portrait, Spring 1887 is incredible. The picture is instantly recognisable, with Stone’s imaginative use of paintbrushes giving an old classic several stunning new dimensions. Vincent van Gogh is clearly a significant influence on Stone, who has recreated other works by the legendary impressionist artist. [ V ] For more info, visit http://finnstone.com

hen you open up a bottle of Averna, you open up a modern and vibrant world of Sicily, a multi-dimensional land built by its openness to a rich mix of people and cultures. existed and thrived in Sicily, made possible by the openness of the island to the passage of people visiting and falling in love with its charm. The result has created a dynamic and multi-sensorial world, a vibrant and warm place, with the welcoming hospitality of Sicilian character at its heart. Sicily is Averna’s homeland. Its legacy starts in 1868 with the story of a secret recipe created by Capuchin monks in Caltanissetta,

Sicily, using a skilful mix of aromatic herbs, natural spices and roots, and essential oils of Sicilian bitter orange and lemons, and pomegranate peel. Over a century later, Averna’s story marries its deep-rooted heritage with colourful modernity as a representation of the vibrancy of Sicily today. A Sicily that has no frontiers, that has welcomed influence and evolution, an island that offers a multi-cultural discovery at every turn; a Sicily that is open.

SPOTLIGHT

The vibrancy of Sicily is captured inside each bottle of Averna, where the distinctive aroma and unmistakable zest of Sicilian ingredients shine. Averna’s authentic taste is achieved by the unique infusion of essential oil from Sicilian bitter oranges and lemons and pomegranate peel. The well-rounded blend reflects the dynamism of its homeland, each sip unveiling a new multi-sensorial dimension. As a Sicilian amaro full of authentic ‘Carattere Siciliano’, Averna is the ideal amaro to prolong and uplift moments of after-meal hospitality with added vibrancy when friends stay together around the ‘de-constructed table’ to create lasting moments of meaningful conviviality. From its ingredients to expert craft and role in moments of meaningful conviviality, each dimension of Averna truly embodies Sicilian vibrancy and the warmth and openness of Sicily that exists today. Averna is your invitation to create lasting moments of meaningful conviviality with friends around the table and journey beyond the surface to unveil the unexpected and vibrant world of the authentic Sicilian amaro. The first multi-sensorial sip of the deep brown and red-golden liquid offers notes of Sicilian citrus, transporting you to the island. This is followed by the vibrant scents

which can remind you of Mediterranean herbs such as myrtle, juniper, rosemary and sage to deliver a softly bitter yet velvety smooth taste. With a skilful blend of Sicilian ingredients that has remained a closely guarded secret since its creation, each sip of Averna opens up a new multi-sensorial experience and portrays the true vibrancy of its homelands. Once the secret combination of Sicilian ingredients has been carefully selected, they undergo an innovative infusion and filtration period to form a rich, intensely aromatic liquid. The infusion of Averna still takes place in Xiboli (Caltanissetta), where the founding father, Don Salvatore Averna, lived. Protecting this craftsmanship and heritage, Averna harmoniously joins tradition with modernity by expressing it through the vibrancy of Sicily today – authentic, refined and multi-sensorial. Averna’s Sicilian authenticity makes it the ideal amaro to prolong moments of after-meal hospitality with added vibrancy when friends stay together around the table to create lasting moments of conviviality. In its warming hospitality, Averna represents the contemporary world of Sicily to be dis-

covered – dynamic with an authenticity that is rooted in its ‘Carattere Siciliano’ – thanks to its openness to a rich mix of cultures, people and experiences. Being Sicilian is not just Averna’s heritage; it’s an unexpected and vibrant way of life.

ARCHITECTURE

estled into the steep cliffs of the Telluride Box Canyon in Colorado sits the aptly named Telluride House. Carved into a vertical wall of Aspen trees, rock cliffs, and wandering creeks, on a 3.4-acre lot adjacent to majestic Bridal Falls, the house consists of three cascading glass boxes with an impressive combined floor area of approximately 7,000 sq. ft. “Every architect dreams about building the proverbial glass house,” notes Aybars Asci, AIA, LEED, President of Efficiency Lab. “It’s a spatial construct that heightens our sensories and allows us to contemplate our natural surroundings with greater focus and appreciation than we otherwise would.” Simple Complexity When the client approached Efficiency Lab about the desire to build a glasshouse, Asci presented an open plan vision, defined by fluidity, that would blur the boundaries between the landscape and the proposed

building environment. The plan focused on the architectural expression of three cantilevered glass boxes. Each glass box is positioned in a moment of suspension, providing a horizontal approach to the vertical terrain of towering Aspens rising from the surrounding mountains and cliffs. “I came up with the idea of creating something breathtaking in just a few weeks, but it took years of careful refinements to bring the vision to life,” Aybars Asci explains. “While the general concept was quite simple, the project was a reminder that sometimes complexity is the path to achieving such levels of simplicity.” The steep terrain of the mountainside played a major role in the architectural design, beginning with rockfall and avalanche mitigation elements. The dual hazard conditions required the construction of avalanche and debris flow barriers on the uphill side, while a permanent soil retention system, in-

cluding anchors tied into the mountainside, created level platforms for the house. Achieving a Delicate Balance The three cascading pavilions are cantilevered and stacked in recession. Their composite steel and timber floor framing provides a tectonic lightness of the glass boxes that reinforces their anchoring to the stereotomic mass of the retaining walls. Abundant use of natural finishes further contributes to the integration of the built environment and its natural surroundings, including split-face marble brick, with exposed natural patterns, that finishes the exterior retaining walls. “There is a sort of symbiotic relationship, where the cantilevers create a delicate connection between the light-footed house and the majestic mountain,” says Asci. “The retaining walls merge into the slopes and integrate with the mountain, while the pavilions, suspended in space, create a counterpoint of lightness.” >>

Panoramic Absorption The interior of the glass pavilions features Northern cedar flat ceiling planes, designed with recessed lighting to eliminate any hanging obstructions to the surrounding breathtaking views. The wide-open floor plate is framed in glass courtesy of window panels separated by minimal ¾” wide mullions, providing uninterrupted horizontal views to the south, where only Aspen trees rise in vertical contrast. At more than 9,000 feet of elevation, the insulated window panels presented another challenge, resolved through the insertion of capillary tubes to

mitigate atmospheric pressure differences between the manufacturing site of the insulated-glass units and the high altitude of the house. The design layout of the three-level glasshouse provides a separation between privacy and togetherness. Entry to the glasshouse is accessed from the ground level, where a stone pavilion and mudroom sit adjacent to a garage, guest bedrooms, and a game room. Ascending to the middle level, the open floor plate contains the Glass House common spaces, including an open kitchen, an unobstructed, expansive living

room, and an adjacent dining room. The upper level is reserved for the three-bedroom family living quarters. On the two upper levels of the glasshouse, the interior polished concrete floors extend seamlessly beyond the glass walls to expansive exterior deck space, courtesy of the cascading design of the cantilevered pavilions. An external pathway on the middle level leads to a cylinder wooden-clad soaking tub, designed along with landscapers to be a solitary point of discovery. >>

”1963 marked the start of a collaboration between Vitra and Verner Panton with the development of one of the most iconic chair designs of the 20th century”

PANTON CHAIR

Investing in innovation Vitra places a high priority on investment in innovation. They constantly strive to push and expand the boundaries of design by linking their technical and conceptual know-how with the creative talents of leading designers. At the same time, the design classics in Vitra’s portfolio are continuously updated in cooperation with the designers or their legal heirs to adapt them to the needs of today’s users. In that spirit, Vitra manufactures Verner Panton’s design– which can be found in numerous museums and exhibitions – in two models: the Panton Chair Classic in rigid polyurethane foam with a glossy surface and the Panton Chair in polypropylene with a matt finish. Since 2007, the latter has also been available in a children’s version, Panton Junior, in keeping with the designer’s original plans.

T

he history of the Panton Chair dates back to the latter half of the 1950s when Danish designer Verner Panton developed the idea of a plastic cantilever chair. However, manufacturers did not want to pursue this daring concept. Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, was interested in the idea but only agreed to it when Rolf Fehlbaum and the head of product development, Manfred Diebold, paid a visit to Panton and returned with glowing reports.

If just one person believes in you

‘Rolf [Fehlbaum, son of the Vitra founding family] came to visit us one day and spotted a prototype of the Panton chair. It wasn‘t stable enough to sit on. Rolf asked: “Why isn‘t this chair being manufactured?” I answered, “Fifteen to twenty manufacturers have tried it but have all rejected the project for different reasons.” A well-known American designer – not Eames – even declared that something like that shouldn‘t be called a “chair” – claiming it was not suitable to sit on. Rolf was immediately on the phone to a Vitra technician, Manfred Diebold. […] Without Rolf there would have been no Panton Chair.’ - Verner Panton. 1963 marked the start of a collaboration between Vitra and Verner Panton with the development of one of the most iconic chair designs of the 20th century. It turned out to be a nearly impossible challenge, as the bold contours imagined by the designer had to be reconciled with the physical limits of plastics technology and manufacturing requirements. It involved several years of research, testing, discarded designs and continuous prototype development: the final shape of the chair was the culmination of ten prototypes made of manually laminated, glass-fibre reinforced polyester. Verner Panton and Vitra developers worked persistently and steadfastly on the project, sacrificing their evenings and weekends.

Spring is a season of change: the earth transforms as flowers bloom and birdsong awakens us. A small caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly in ‘Chrysalis,’ while ‘Palmistry’ and ‘Spellbound’ show us the magic that is all around us – we just have to slow down like the ‘Fearless Wanderer’ to see it. A dawning spring not only brings about a transformation in nature but an internal change within ourselves. ‘Lady Justice’ represents the ideal that we are all equal, while ‘Strength’ serves as a reminder that we have the ability to persevere through the ebb and flow of life. Q+A

SMILE! IT’S TIME TO PREEN THOSE PEARLY WHITES

RENOWNED DENTIST DR NICOLA MCARDLE ANSWERS ALL YOUR QUESTIONS AND SHARES EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WHITENING YOUR TEETH. and gums with no restorations such as fillings, crowns or veneers on their front teeth. However, one may not be a suitable candidate if they have gum disease, tooth decay or hypersensitivity. As with any dental or medical treatment, teeth whitening must be tailored to your needs. There is no ‘one size fits all. Tell your dentist what you want to achieve and any concerns you may have. Your dentist can then guide you toward the right treatment. It may be that routine professional cleaning by your dentist, together with regular brushing and flossing, will give you the ‘stain-free’ natural smile that you’re looking for without the need for whitening. The dentist will examine your teeth thoroughly, check your oral health history, and decide whether tooth whitening is the treatment of choice for you. Does the treatment work on crowns? No. Teeth whitening only works on natural teeth. Crowns, veneers or tooth-coloured fillings will not whiten. If you have any crowns, veneers or fillings in your front teeth, you may need to have these replaced after your whitening treatment to match them to your new, whiter shade.

Is teeth whitening the same as polishing? No. Routine polishing removes surface stains caused by coffee, cigarettes and red wine using strong polishing with special pastes. It can be done by your dentist or dental hygienist. Routine polishing may remove surface stains from your teeth, but it does not change the colour of your teeth. Talk to your dentist if you have deep stains on your teeth that don’t go away with routine cleaning and polishing. It could be tooth decay or another problem. Teeth whitening removes both surface and internal stains using hydrogen peroxide, a type of bleaching agent. Why is teeth whitening so popular? Our teeth are not perfectly white by nature, and some people feel that they could

improve their smiles with brighter, whiter teeth. Stains can appear on teeth over time due to consuming certain foods and beverages. Teeth also naturally turn more yellow with age as they acquire pigmentation. Teeth whitening can dramatically enhance the appearance of one’s smile without compromising the health of their teeth. A rise in teeth whitening popularity has led to the development of a variety of bleaching solutions and techniques that have rendered it more cost-effective and enabled more predictable results with minimal side effects. Can everyone get their teeth whitened? A complete check-up with your dentist is recommended to determine one’s suitability for teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is ideal for patients who have healthy teeth

What does the whitening process involve? Teeth whitening is a way to improve the colour of your teeth using hydrogen peroxide (a type of bleach). It is safe and effective if carried out by a dentist or under the supervision of a dentist. It does not remove any of the surfaces of the teeth or add anything to the teeth. Once you are a suitable candidate, your dentist will work with you to identify the shade of white you wish to achieve. Impressions will then be taken of your teeth to develop customised whitening trays which you can use yourself at home. Your bespoke whitening kit will include the trays and a special whitening gel. How long does the treatment take? This depends on the teeth whitening procedure and kit one opts for; you may only need to use your whitening trays for one hour per day or overnight. Your dentist will advise >>

ing pain and sensitivity, the concentration of the whitening solution and any whitening accelerators (e.g., light activation) may be to blame. Attempting to accelerate whitening with higher bleach concentrations and/ or light (i.e., laser) activation can raise the tooth’s internal temperature, cause overly dehydrated teeth, and damage the otherwise healthy tooth structure. All teeth whitening products containing more than 6% hydrogen peroxide are banned in Europe as they are not considered safe for patients. In addition, some socalled ‘non-peroxide’ bleaching products, on the particular kit you receive. Most people will use the trays for at least two weeks, but this varies from patient to patient. Teeth whitening treatment is a gradual process. It could take a number of weeks to achieve the shade you wish.

Is teeth whitening safe? Are there any side effects? Teeth whitening carried out and supervised by your dentist is perfectly safe and does not harm your teeth or general health. Despite advancements in whitening materials and techniques, among the common side effects that many patients may still experience, during or after whitening are increased sensitivity to hot and cold things and, sometimes, irritation inside the mouth. These side effects usually disappear a few days after stopping treatment but can sometimes last for up to a month or so. Your dentist can help you deal with any side effects. While several theories explain post-whiten-

Can one do anything to maintain a brighter smile? After the initial application, one should have plenty of whitening gel which can be used for top-ups annually or as frequently advised by your dentist. To keep one’s teeth looking their best and brightest, it is vital to maintain a good oral health routine at home, avoid smoking, eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and schedule regular check-ups and polish visits to your dentist or dental hygienist to keep your teeth clean and healthy. How safe and effective are tooth whitening products sold in shops and online? It is often unclear exactly what these products contain, so it’s tough to know if they are safe to use or effective even. Many products bought online do not clearly state their active ingredients and often contain ingredients that are banned in the European Union (EU) on safety grounds. For example, the law states that the maximum concentration of hydrogen peroxide that can be used to whiten teeth is 6%. This used to be a lot higher and caused uncomfortable side effects in

How white will my teeth get? The shade you can achieve will depend on the shade of your teeth at the onset. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the likely outcome before you begin. With the customised kits, one has more control over their results if they do not exceed the recommended duration. Is it painful? One may experience some sensitivity during the whitening process. This is entirely normal and should disappear when you finish your whitening treatment. If you usually have sensitive teeth, it may be helpful to use sensitive toothpaste before and during whitening.

such as sodium perborate and boric acid, damage DNA (the biological information carried in your genes), reduce fertility and harm the unborn. Always check with your dentist about any product used to whiten your teeth. Does the light-activation/”laser” work? Although light-activation of whitening agents has existed for some time, research has demonstrated its ineffectiveness to enhance bleaching efficacy. Additionally, the science behind light-activated whitening may explain why many patients experience pain after this type of whitening treatment. Lasers, lights, or another heating source, which were initially added to whitening procedures to accelerate whitening, can lead to internally heating a tooth and its dehydration, increasing the likelihood of sensitivity and pain both during and after the whitening treatment.

some patients. The EU Council Directive 2011/84/EU also states that tooth whitening can only be carried out by a dentist or under a dentist’s supervision.

How long will the results last? The effects of whitening will vary from person to person. Results may be impacted by

But the most important thing here is this: you don’t even feel overwhelmed by doing or trying those postures. You’re actually having fun!

met my first yoga teacher, Kate back in 2017 in a yoga ashram in Kerala, India. It was a year when I discovered yoga for myself after a painful breakup with a very toxic guy. And to me, yoga seemed like a perfect and natural act of escapism. No doubt, it helped. But temporarily. I remember, after returning back home from India I texted Kate asking: why everything around me feels so negative? Why I was the happiest person in the world when I was in the ashram? Is it India or is it just me? Why am I feeling worse than before? She said: It’s all about vibes. You have to find a way how to keep those high vibrations in the world that tries to put you down. I didn’t really understand what she meant by that time. But I continued practicing yoga: Sivananda, Vinyasa Flow, Hatha, Iyengar. Then I met Ashtanga. It smoothly and protectively kept me in its arms for a long time. Five years later, after my first authentic experience in an Indian yoga ashram, I told this story to Francesca - a bright Italian woman, with whom I was sharing an afternoon coffee in the center of Rome. It’s all about vibes - she said. The very same thing. But after she adds more: But hey, we are not in India. We are in Europe and there must be a way how to adjust yoga practice to modern society. After moving to Rome, I had a serious intention to continue my Ashtanga practice. I was looking for the right yoga school for years

and when I found it - I tried the class. And a mysterious thing happened: I realized I am not in love with Ashtanga anymore. It felt the same as if you were going back to your old relationship hoping it will be the same. And then I felt guilty. Felt guilty for not wanting to continue my Ashtanga practice: in fact, Ashtanga and I shared a lot of difficulties and happy moments together. But now the love, this devotion, and admiration - all of it just have gone. Except for the gratitude to this practice that taught me many things. Discipline, for example. It’s just not your yoga - she explained. And that made sense to me. Francesca, a brilliant woman with very strong energy, beautiful eyes, and a contagious sincere laugh - is one of my yoga teachers in Rome’s famous RYOGA studio. In my opinion, is the best yoga studio that Italy is able to offer you. She practices yoga for more than 10 years and is one of five teachers that spreads the knowledge about Rocket yoga in entire Rome. This woman inspires you to stand on your yoga mat every Friday night after an exhausting working day, instead of going for a relaxing drink with your friends. Fun fact: yoga studio where Francesca teaches is located in Rome’s neighborhood well known as the center of aperitivo. Of course, every Friday is tempting to skip the class and choose a nice glass of Italian prosecco. But still, after trying Rocket yoga once - you start making healthy choices. Every week my Roman

Speaking of fun: Francesca said that during her teaching training, they were asked to watch all parts of “Star Wars”. There is an actual connection between Rocket and Star Wars! Being amazed by this information, I asked her to tell me more about it. For example, we were told that ujjayi breath, one of the core breaths in yoga practice - is the breath of Darth Vader - and then she laughed. Or even sun salutations: they are not traditional Surya Namaskars. They are called Jedi Sun Salutation - we have to jump in a handstand every time we do the vinyasa - she continued. And Yoda - he is a real yogi! Isn’t he? And this is not the end. Rocket also is a very complete and practical yoga from the practitioner’s perspective: it consists of breathing exercises, the so-called “pranayama”, among them - Darth Vader’s breath, Jedi sun salutations, sequences from Ashtanga yoga: bends, twists, and sitting poses that are connected with each other with “San Francisco twinkle toes” - a walk on your toes from the end of the yoga mat to its beginning. The practice finishes with mild meditation. In other words, full-body and soul experience. But this is not the thing that actually caught my attention. As Kate and Francesca said: it is all about vibes. Everything around Rocket is about vibes: in this practice, I’ve found the creativity and inspiration I’m always craving for. It made me come back again. And again. Until I understood that this is it: Rocket is my new love. The name “Rocket” may be enough to have you recoil in real confusion. The word makes it sound more weird than the practice actually is. This relatively new practice has only been around for 30 years and has already done wonders for making yoga more accessible to Western yogis. Just like Francesca said. No wonder it has many celebrity followers and attracts many creative people like Madonna, Willem Dafoe, Sting and Christy Turlington. And again: yoga and

FACE FIRST What is the best age to start a skin routine? I would say it is not about age but more about the changes in the skin the young person is experiencing. Not all teenagers hit puberty at the same time; as such, parents should be keeping a close eye on changes in their child’s skin. Usually, impurities start from the t-zone and nose area. This can begin anywhere from as young as the age of 10. If you start to see changes, it’s best to tackle them right away

and not wait. This helps to prevent inflammation and common scenarios such as dilated pores. For example, it’s a common misconception in the case of girls to wait until they get their period. Getting into a great skincare routine once any skin changes occur is a significant preventative measure. How much is the environment a factor in teenage years? During this stage of life, skin changes are related far more to hormonal changes than external factors. That said, living a healthy lifestyle is essential at any age and maintaining one supports skin renewal and development.

up that leads to spots. This applies to both boys and girls! Boys typically experience skin changes later than girls. However, a classic example is ensuring they wash their face after sports to remove sweat. Often teenagers can become stuck in a cycle of waiting until the last minute to seek help or covering skin up with makeup, which becomes a vicious cycle. There are different levels of skincare depending on what the skin needs, and it’s good to try cosmeceuticals before medical options with the

essential nutrients and cause dehydration. Don’t purchase products online or off the shelf without a full consultation. Eczema prone skin is usually genetic and flares ups seasonally. Keeping skin hydrated is most important here. However, those with this skin type may also need antihistamines and medical guidance. In some cases, it can even be a food allergy.

support of an excellent therapist advising.

What skin regime should teenagers start? It’s imperative to cleanse and hydrate with moisturisers, both morning and evening, and use an excellent separate sunblock. Ideally, avoid products with SPF combined as moisturisers will need to penetrate the skin deeper. What’s more, not all skincare brands require a toner to balance out the acidity. Please speak with a therapist to find the best routine to suit the skin’s needs. It’s also essential to remove makeup and hair care products; this is often overlooked and can irritate the skin when sleeping on the pillow at night. Instead, rest on a new surface, change pillowcases frequently or put a towel down at night. And it goes without saying- don’t pick spots!

What are good habits that can be implemented during the teenage years? I can’t stress enough how important it is to set a great daily routine. Cleansing the skin is very important to remove blackheads that turn into spots, so treating the skin early is paramount. We aim to promote regular treatments such as facials, as preventing skin conditions is best and helps in the case of avoiding scarring.

What are the biggest problems you see during the teenage years?

Diet is also an essential factor. However, not everyone is sensitive to foods, but chocolate, cheese, and alcohol are not ideal for the skin as they create inflammation. On top of this, it is crucial to drink plenty of water and keep skin hydrated.

Teenagers can often be very laid back. For example, many I see do not have a routine in place, many forget to remove make up and sleep with it on, and many do not cleanse and wash their face adequately to prevent a build-
