Introducing Wonderlust:

[ Wedgwood, Claire Luxton and Feathr collaboration reimagines teaware collection as an art installation ]

F

eathr has collaborated with iconic British brand, Wedgwood, and multi-disciplinary artist, Claire Luxton, to create an original artwork and luxury wallpaper mural ‹Wonderlust› - inspired by six patterns introduced to the Wedgwood Wonderlust teaware collection. Luxton reimagined the new Wedgwood patterns with a living sculptural installation visualized in the artist’s East Sussex studio. Using florals, botanicals, taxidermy, and live animals, Luxton created a multi dimensional installation involving sculptural, collage, photographic, and hand painted techniques.

The finished three dimensional sculpture was photographed in over thirty different sections by Luxton, who then digitally stitched the artwork together in hundreds of layers before applying hand finished details, including water droplets and images of real life poison dart frogs. Working with Luxton, Feathr has adapted the artwork into a 6 x 3 meter wall mural, available exclusively from Feathr.com. The Wonderlust by Claire Luxton x Wedgwood faithfully reproduces the exquisite detail of Luxton’s original artwork, with the flora and fauna captured in breathtaking sharpness. >>

Feathr works with a community of internationally acclaimed contemporary artists to design and produce bespoke wallpapers and wall murals. The Feathr team had worked with Claire Luxton in the past, and introduced the artist to Wedgwood as the ideal creative partner to reinterpret the Wonderlust design and bring the patterns to life in an interior space. Wedgwood is renowned for collaborating with artists to create new expressions of its iconic patterns, an approach focused on reinvention that has resulted in unexpected interpretations and exciting contemporary visions of the company’s classic and timeless designs. Recent Wedgwood design collaborations

have included Japanese ceramic artist and RCA alumni, Hitomi Hosono, and leading UK product and interior designer, Lee Broom. In the 1930’s, the British landscape painter, Eric Ravilious, became an ongoing collaborator with Wedgwood, and in the 1970’s, Scottish sculptor and graphic artist, Eduardo Paolozzi, created a limited collection of six plates using modern screen printing techniques.

wood approached us to bring the collection to life as a wallcovering. Claire Luxton, whose work so cleverly plays with the form and scale of botanics, felt like the perfect artist to take the Wonderlust designs on the journey from tableware to wall mural. The final artwork is something truly joyous; rich in detail, filled with tropical texture, and a siren call to explore and engage with the natural world.”

Commenting on the partnership with Wedgwood and Claire Luxton, Tom Puukko, Founder of Feathr, says, “We believe art is for everyone and that art should be everywhere. The lush creativity of the new Wedgwood Wonderlust collection felt so ripe for taking into a larger format like a wall mural, so we were delighted when Wedg-

be inspired. Welcome to Wedgwood, the home of Eclectic Originals. About Claire Luxton Claire Luxton is a British contemporary multidisciplinary artist working with photography, installation, poetry, and painting, and is represented by MTArt Agency. After receiving a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University of London, Luxton created a challenging series of self portraits

and sculptures, pushing her emotional and physical boundaries by becoming both the subject matter and the materiality. Her work explores the delicate equilibrium between humans and nature, and the ominous undercurrents of her work oscillate between constructed femininity and alluring vulnerability, seducing the viewer with intrigue and uncertainty.

ART/DESIGN

[ ...“Her work explores the delicate equilibrium between humans and nature”... ] Luxton’s work draws on both the modern anxiety of society and the environment; each portrait, painting, and accompanying poetry, becoming an exploration of isolation, desire, and uncertainty. In 2015 Luxton’s exploration of human fragility, physicality, and the female form culminated in her first solo exhibition, Avalon. This was followed by her second solo exhibition, BOTANICA, in 2017. The artist’s work has been shown in London, Miami, and Singapore, including exhibits at The London Art Fair and Art Basel. Claire Luxton’s work is regularly featured in leading international art, culture, and fashion publications including Harper’s Bazaar, FLUX Magazine, Glamour Italia, The Saturday Telegraph Magazine, and Blogosphere Magazine. Commercial commissions have been received from Crown Estate, Regent Street (2021), United Nations x Artivive (2020), Adobe Creative Cloud (2019), Swarovski (2019), Birmingham Royal Ballet (2018), and McQueen (2017). Solo exhibitions include L’Occitane, House of Luxton (2021), Christie’s Collectors Club (2020), Botanica (2017 2019), and Avalon (2015 - 2016). Luxton’s work has also been exhibited at Paris Photo Off, Paris (2020), The London Art Fair (2018), Art Basel, Miami (2016), and Serpentine Gallery, London (2015). [ V ] Instagram @claireluxtonart

T

he “Voxel Cloud“ project is an experimental prototype that deals with deep and vague tectonics in an architectural context by investigating resolution and complexity. The project confronts the exuberance of complex geometries generated by algorithms with the perception of humans, thus questioning the central role of the human within this process by trying to blend between nature and technology. The end result as a house is not a proposal per se, but rather a speculation of how data and computation can generate an architecture that can be built by machine, and inhabited not just by humans, but also by micro to macro-organisms in a post-anthropocentric environment.

Complexity is defined as the amount of data and information within a system. Nowadays, we are not limited in the amount of information anymore. Day by day, we gain an exponential increase of collected data, and the tendency goes in the direction of an open-source society. Simultaneously, we are more and more limited in our natural resources – data is free, the material is limited, and there is no longer the question between more is more vs. less is more. As architecture is not just a material, but also an informational practice, we have the possibility to build with less material, but with more information, which accordingly leads to complexity. Due to the fact that the building industry is the slowest growing industry in the world, we have to radically change the

way we think about architecture. The project utilizes a computational workflow, where scanned point cloud data acts as an input for the design tool apparatus. This three-dimensional dataset serves as a digital data-scape that can be further informed by local and global attributes such as environmental conditions, structural loads, digital fabrication parameters, and material constraints. This process transforms the point cloud into a voxel cloud, whereas each voxel acts as a container of unique information and data at its specific location. This data-scape, mostly hidden and invisibly to humans, can then be decoded and fabricated by machine. >> SUMMER_‘22 ISSUE 51

“THERE IS NO INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR, BUT RATHER SEVERAL DENSITIES THAT CAN ENHANCE DIFFERENT MICROCLIMATE CONDITIONS.”>> 030

SUMMER_’22 ISSUE 51

ART/DESIGN

As an output, the design tool apparatus produces a filigree and lightweight data-informed structure, which has a high variety in density and articulation. It is characterized by transitions between solid and fibrous, as well as order and disorder. There is no final design, but rather an ongoing adaptive growing process. Instead of separating the construction process and the architectural utilization from one another, the structure serves as an interface where fabrication ro-

bots, humans, and other species can coexist, like in a theatrical performance. There is no interior or exterior, but rather several densities that can enhance different microclimate conditions. The voxel scaffold acts as a canvas for plants and animals to adapt and build on, while also guiding water throughout the whole structure. It is located in a park in Innsbruck, Austria, where it can become overgrown over time to blend with

its natural surroundings. This project was part of the Bachelor thesis by Julian Edelmann, and was developed at i.sd institute for structure and design, the University of Innsbruck, under the supervision of Prof. Kristina Schinegger, Prof. Stefan Rutzinger, Viktoria Sandor, and Klemens Sitzmann. The thoughtful spaces and raw materials, animated by hammocks and cosy nooks within a luxurious tropical garden, promote pure relaxation.

“ ...AN INSPIRED “BAREFOOT BOHO-CHIC” RETREAT, ELEGANTLY DESIGNED FOR LAID-BACK TRAVELLERS WITH DISCRIMINATING TASTE.”

The locally inspired thatched palm roof dominating the hotel’s entrance immediately leads guests to enter a stylish indoor-outdoor lounge area of handcrafted wooden sofas and swings around an inviting bar made of locally sourced Guanacaste wood. The contemporary aesthetic of the furniture, designed by the owners themselves and handcrafted by a talented local carpenter, exudes a modern elegance to this central space. The natural textures and exotic touches create a relaxed, friendly environment where guests can sit back and socialize. Set between a tropical garden and a cosy open lounge area, the guests are greeted by the commanding sight of an impressive 20 meters turquoise-blue swimming pool surrounded by a natural pine wood deck. The defining signature architectural feature of the hotel is a series of polished white structural elements that animate one side of the pool’s length, poetically articulating the 4 Swim-Up Suites. Each of the four rooms features its own private pinewood terrace and swim-up platform for exclusive morning wake-up swims and afternoon lounging. These suites offer a contemporary environment of clean, polished concrete interiors and built-in shelves, contrasted by the warmth of local wood furniture and handpicked Guatemalan textiles. All of the rooms enjoy the luxury of their own open-air private bathroom, offering a tropical shower under the stars surrounded by lush palms. >>

Swell sits nestled in a small fishing village with the reputation of offering access to the best surf in the country, drawing surfers from all over the world. The beach itself is massive and, at times, devoid of anyone else in sight. The charming physical landscapes that surround El Paredón offer guests rare opportunities to take part in tours of impressive mangrove forests, salt farms, and turtle feeding grounds. To that end, Swell works with a local development NGO, la Choza Chula, to offer access to such tours, all led by local guides. The combination of endless authentic black sand beaches, untouched tropical landscapes, and traditional palm-thatched archi-

tecture makes El Paredón possibly one of Guatemala’s most exciting and least well-known travel destinations. Swell is the result of collaborative work between Elan Ibghy, a McGill Architecture graduate from Montreal, and Marie Bonnefond, an interior designer from the south of France. This couple’s vision brought them to the beach of Guatemala three years ago, and through 1,5 years of construction, they opened the doors of their dream project in September 2018. hoplifter / Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir is one of Iceland’s leading contemporary artists, based in New York. Working with both synthetic and natural hair, her sculptures, wall murals and site-specific installations explore themes of vanity, self-image, fashion, beauty and popular myth. For Shoplifter, hair is the ultimate thread that grows from our body. Hair is an original, creative

fibre, a way for people to distinguish themselves as individuals, and often an art form. Humour plays a prominent role in her life and work, sometimes subtly, but at other times taking over. Shoplifter’s connection with hair In creating her installations, Shoplifter explores people’s intimate, emotional connection with hair. It is often a part of us that

shapes our identity, marking stages of our lives throughout the years. The artist vividly notes her first realization of this, reflecting on the discovery of her grandmother’s braid in her vanity drawer, a ‘morbid’ but ‘beautiful’ relic of her youth. After cutting off her own braid, she remembers her disappointment, realizing she had short hair. ‘I just wanted the braid! it didn’t occur to me that it would be such a transformation. >>

elcome to a home with a difference in the Big Sur, California. By taking cues and inspiration from the surrounding landscape, Studio Schicketanz, led by Mary Ann Schicketanz, designed a breathtaking, sustainable home that literally blends into the hillside for a Silicon Valley-based family, their two daughters, and live-in parent, looking for a new lease on life. What was initially planned as a weekend getaway has, given the pandemic, turned into the ultimate

quarantine escape, where they can enjoy the ocean front pool and views, a game room, a den, a large kitchen, and everything else that the special property has to offer. The residence consists of four separate “cubes,” separating living and sleeping quarters. The primary three cubes on the western side are comprised of floor-to-ceiling glazed sliders, serving as the western walls, which take maximum advantage of the expansive views of the Pacific ocean, as

well as allow for strong connections to the pool. The fourth cube, the guest suite, faces the hills and courtyard. The project’s largest design challenge provided the most innovative design solutions. In accordance with local planning laws, the new building had to remain invisible from Highway One. So the team created the building site by cutting a shelf into the gentle hill side. The resulting 15’ high retaining wall is curvilinearly shaped to better blend with the land. >>

Step inside Schicketanz and her team appointed the home with the finest products and finishes, including, but not limited to, pieces from Coup D’etat, Holly Hunt, Larsen, Moooi, Piet Boon, Miele, Brizio, B&B Italia, Tai Ping, Phillip Jeffries, Giorgetti, Pindler, Restoration Hardware, and Concrete Works. The pool features petrified wood

stumps by Leos Enderle and Rodney Hunter, while the sculptural artwork of Eric Gushee and Casey McCafferty, as well as pieces by Silvia Poloto, are found throughout the home. Each of the beds, ottomans, book cases, and media cabinets were custom designed. Material selections include local granite

from Hollister, CA for the rock walls, integral plaster for the “cubes” placed in front of the rock walls, and Savannah Brown Duras flagstone to complement the wall stone and entry way connectors. The “shell” was kept in all neutral and earth tone colors, while the interior showcases accents of color from the custom blend mosaic walls and Venetian plaster accent walls.

ARCHITECTURE

In addition to the home’s luxe, high-end finishes and furnishings, and given its extreme location, the home is anticipated to achieve net zero due to power and hot water (for the pool) generation from solar panels and Tesla Power Walls, which will power the house when grid power is not available. The power produced onsite covers all of the power

needs of the house, as well as charging for 2 EV vehicles. As you step into the home’s entry, you are surrounded by a neutral material palette and look directly through 3 clear sliders that open into the courtyard. The guest wing is to your left and the main living cube and view

to the ocean is to your right. Concrete flooring was selected to compliment the stone and is used for flooring in the connectors of the living cubes. The reclaimed ceiling from wine barrels extends from the main living cube into the entry creating an exceptionally warm welcome. >>

The Living Room furnishings were selected for their shape and comfort and the materials of the furnishings were kept neutral as a reflection of the architectural finishes. Cognac leather on the Moooi swivel chairs speaks to the warm oak boards on the floor and ceiling. These are also functional pieces allowing one to swivel towards the ocean, courtyard, and dining/kitchen.

Artwork by Eric Gushee hangs on the custom hued Venetian plaster accent wall. The ceiling and flooring were kept neutral allowing south and north walls to become an accent with pops of color. The exterior plaster wraps into the main living area around into the connector and onto the portion of the eastern wall opening to the entry. WELL-BEING

[ THE IMPORTANCE OF MONITORING ]

Do you know the signs of skin cancer? Here’s the good news, skin cancer is curable if it is detected early enough, and Saint James Clinic in Burmarrad has the most advanced technology on the island to help you keep a close eye on your skin. First things first, let’s clear up a few myths. The most significant risk factors are excessive UV exposure to sun, genetic predisposition, previous history of skin cancer and having multiple moles. However, more than two-thirds of melanoma develop “de novo” on healthy skin and not from existing moles. For optimal safety, tracking the entire skin

072

SUMMER_’22 – ISSUE 51

in addition to individual moles is important. But how? Here’s the solution, an automated total body map of your skin with state of the art technology, known as ATBM- Automated Total Body Mapping. The benefits of an ATBM screening are apparent. It allows for complete skin documentation during regular check-ups. During every visit, new photos can be compared to past sessions enabling the visualisation of every change at the earliest possible stage. This forward-thinking service is available at Saint James Clinic in Burmarrad.

WELL-BEING

How does it work? Automated Total Body Mapping (ATBM) captures the entire skin surface seamlessly in the long term. Clinicians’ use the high-tech FotoFinder system to create a “body map” of your moles and systematically take photographs of your body - from head to toe and all sides - within a few minutes. It removes the need for unnecessary excisions. Clinicians’ at Saint James Hospital can obtain a complete evaluation of new or changed lesions instantly during your check-up with the powerful FotoFinder Artificial Intelligence. With this revolutionary software, you can be assured your data will be safe, secure and confidential. The Power of Video Dermoscopy In addition, suspicious moles are examined dermatoscopically. With a special video dermatoscope, the clinician can take enlarged pictures of your moles, clearly showing the pattern and structures. The digital storage of your skin images enables objective comparison of previous and current skin findings during regular checkups. In addition, it allows you to follow your past and present examinations effortlessly on screen.

Are you a high-risk patient? If you can answer yes to any of the below, please get in touch with St James Hospital. • Do you have fair skin that is sensitive to sunlight? • Do you have a particularly large number of moles? • Do you have large congenital nevi? Do you have atypical moles or moles that have recently changed? • Did you get sunburn as a child or adolescent? • Is there a history of skin cancer in your family? • Did you already have skin cancer? • Are you exposed to strong sunlight or UV rays at regular intervals? What to look out for: • Changes in colour and newly developed moles. • Changes in the surrounding area of moles, e.g. redness, white colouration, swelling • Increase or decrease in size, thickness or elevation • Bleeding moles
