he 26th edition of Paris Photo, hosting 191 galleries and publishers from all over the world, attracted an international audience of professionals, collectors and enthusiasts to the Grand Palais Éphémère. A striking feature of this year’s edition was a new digital sector showcasing a selection of galleries and platforms whose featured artists combine art and new technologies in their approach to photography. Always at the forefront of diversity in terms of practices and esthetics, the Curiosa sector once again offered visitors an insight into the dynamism of the young international scene, with 17 artists making their debut appearance at Paris Photo.
The 2023 edition confirmed the prominance of the fair on a global scale. During her visit to the event, Rima Abdul Malak, the French Minister of Culture, awarded the insignia of Officer of Arts and Letters to the fair’s director Florence Bourgeois, and to the French–American photographer Jane Evelyn Atwood. Paris Photo provides a unique environment for meetings and discussions and is an essential platform for the dissemination of photography. Next year’s edition scheduled for November 7 to 10, 2024 will be held in the newly renovated Grand Palais, with larger spaces for an improved visitor experience and a program with plenty of fresh content. >>

“We are delighted to see that Paris Photo has become an unmissable event for international professionals and institutions, artists, enthusiasts and collectors. We are also thrilled to reach such a diverse audience, with specialists and neophytes alike attracted by our various sectors: Curiosa, showcasing emerging talents; the Publishers sector, with signing sessions by 400 artists; and the new Digital Sector, which probes the limits of the photographic medium. In 2023, we celebrated the 5th anniversary of our commitment to the Elles x Paris Photo program with a book entitled ELLES, published by Textuel. We were particularly proud to see that the number of women photographers represented has risen from 20 to 36% over the last 5 years! And of course, we are delighted
at the prospect of returning to the Grand Palais in 2024, to broaden and enrich the presentation of photography.”– Florence Bourgeois, Director of Paris Photo. “For my first edition as Artistic Director of Paris Photo, it seemed essential to me to be at the heart of contemporary issues. I also wanted to propose a greater diversity of photographic practices to meet the challenges raised by the evolution of the image. This means digital art, among others, and it was important to have a sector dedicated to that photography in the digital age. Curiosa brought together a new generation of artists and was very well received by our international visitors”. Anna Planas, Artistic Director of Paris Photo. The week as a whole saw some very good sales to private collectors and European or American institutions. >>

A SUSTAINABLE INFLUENCE. “MEET ALEJANDRA CERDA OJENSA, A SUSTAINABLE CONTENT CREATOR & FEMINIST, COMMITTED TO SHIFTING PUBLIC OPINION ON SUSTAINABLE LIVING. ALEJANDRA SHARES HER HOPES, PASSIONS & FIRM BELIEFS.”
A
Q+A
lejandra Cerda Ojensa is a sustainable content creator and sewing creative based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She’s originally from Sweden and has a social anthropology and communications background, but she is now focused on inspiring people to choose sustainable fashion and lifestyle – all with a seriously pleasing aesthetic! Vamp caught up with Alejandra to find out more. What inspired you to make the shift towards a sustainable lifestyle and become an advocate for ethical and eco-friendly choices, particularly in the areas of fashion and interiors? –I’ve always been interested in society and politics, alongside clothes and beautiful interiors. When I was in my early 20s, I realised how our consumption was political, and then I decided to make more mindful choices. As a feminist, I don’t believe in buying clothes or goods that exploit other women, and I’ve found that many in the sustainability niche didn’t have my aesthetic – so I started taking photos and making YouTube videos showing that sustainability can look cool, fun and funky as well. As a content creator in sustainable living, how do you approach conveying complex topics such as ethical fashion and conscious 058
XMAS_’23 ISSUE
consumerism to a diverse audience on platforms like YouTube? I love YouTube because I’m very into video format. As people worldwide use YouTube as a search engine, people with different backgrounds can find my videos through our mutual interests. I think it’s crucial to have an intersectional perspective when talking about consumption in general and an inclusive perspective when it comes to lifestyle and fashion – because there’s such a strong norm on how things should look and what’s considered attractive and desirable, so it’s cool to be there and share other perspectives. Given your background in sustainable fashion and lifestyle, how do you believe individuals can effectively balance their personal style preferences with making environmentally conscious choices in their wardrobe and home decor? We must come to terms with the fact that we don’t own this planet and that everything we do and buy will impact someone else. Understanding that will guide you to make choices that you can stand behind. I’ve decided to buy second-hand clothes and interiors, choose biodegradable and sustainable materials, and support small independent brands. I believe it’s easier now than ever to make sustainable choices. >>

PEOPLE Congratulations on being accepted into YouTube’s paid partnership program! Can you share some insights into the challenges and successes you’ve experienced while growing your YouTube channel, especially in a niche focused on sustainability? Thank you so much! It’s really about being consistent – not because of algorithms, but because you learn so much from treating your work with respect and showing up, also when it feels like you’re talking to no one! And along the way, you’ll get to play and be creative. The challenge is to make your target audience find you, but when you do – it’s so rewarding to have created a little corner of the internet to share thoughts and life with like-minded people. What practical steps can they take to make meaningful changes in their daily lives? I would advise people to be curious when buying food! Try new things and build meals around vegetables, seeds, tofu and things you’ve never tried before. Go to grocery stores you don’t usually go to and really splurge when it comes to spices, sauces, pastes and herbs! When it comes to clothes, honestly, we need less than what we believe, and most people don’t even use the clothes in their wardrobe, so donate what you’re not using and choose biodegradable materials. Also, making your own clothes can be super easy and fun! [ V ] You can follow Alejandra on: Instagram.com/alejandracerda.co & on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AlejandraCerda/videos

LAKE FOREST PARK
SCULPTING SERENITY LOCATED 25 MILES NORTH OF SEATTLE, THE LAKE FOREST PARK RENOVATION BY FINNE ARCHITECTS IS A MESMERISING TESTAMENT TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF ARCHITECTURE. TEN YEARS AGO, A 1950S NORTHWEST CONTEMPORARY HOUSE EMBARKED ON A JOURNEY OF REINVENTION, EMERGING AS A GLASS PAVILION IN THE FOREST—A HARMONIOUS BLEND OF PAST AND PRESENT, SUSTAINABILITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. JOIN US ON A JOURNEY THROUGH THIS ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL, WHERE EVERY DETAIL TELLS A STORY OF ELEGANCE REIMAGINED AND INSPIRATION REBORN.
>
Situated in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, where the evergreen majesty of nature converges with human ingenuity, the Lake Forest Park Renovation by Finne Architects emerges as a captivating narrative of rebirth and transformation. On this secluded, wooded site, a 1950s Northwest contemporary house has undergone a metamorphosis that transcends time while preserving the spirit of the original structure. Imagine a glass pavilion gracefully nestled in the forest—a visual symphony where architecture becomes integral to its natural surroundings. The renovation, initiated in 2012, involved meticulous planning and a visionary approach. The result is extraordinary—a home that breathes in the whis-

pers of the past while embracing the contemporary spirit of sustainable design. The architectural dance begins with extensive new windows and glazed roof monitors that bathe the house in natural light. This glass pavilion effect connects the interior with the enchanting forest and redefines the dwelling as a luminous sanctuary, blurring the boundaries between the man-made and the organic. The reorganisation of the floor plan is a stroke of genius, creating a light-filled master bedroom & master bathroom that stand as sanctuaries surrounded by glass, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding woods. The living and dining spaces have been subtly enlarged, with a new roof monitor introducing soft natural light to the entire area. The enlarged kitchen, a master-
piece in itself, boasts quartz and cast-glass countertops, with continuous windows extending seamlessly to counter level, inviting the beauty of the outdoors inside. The architects paid homage to the original structure by retaining the existing hemlock ceiling with exposed fir beams in half of the house while seamlessly integrating new fir ceilings in the remaining areas. Terrazzo flooring, a nod to the past, has been re-finished and expanded, creating a timeless foundation for the contemporary masterpiece. In true Finne Architects fashion, the renovation embodies the concept of “crafted modernism.” >>

The careful selection of materials creates a harmonious interplay of texture and colour, where each element benefits from its adjacency to contrasting surfaces. Cherry panels, some smooth and others intricately woven through CNC milling, adorn the casework. A 30-foot accent wall, clad entirely in weathered steel panels, becomes a canvas for a captivating dance of variegated umber colours. Custom fabrications, from cast-glass kitchen counters to hand-blown glass light fixtures, elevate the space to an artistic realm, infusing it with a personalized touch.
However, this renovation is not just an aesthetic triumph; it’s a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Radiant heating under the terrazzo flooring ensures an even heat source with maximum energy efficiency. High clerestory windows bring the warmth of natural light deep into the house, while motorised operators allow for strategic venting during the summer months. Green materials, such as resin panels, quartz counters, linoleum, low VOC paint, and sustainably sourced wooden prod-
ucts were thoughtfully incorporated into the project, underscoring a dedication to eco-conscious design. Yet, perhaps the most profound sustainability lies in the very act of renovation itself—a practice that captures the embodied energy of the original 1950s house, breathing new life into its architectural DNA. Craftsmanship and attention to detail, integral to the renovation, illustrate a fundamental sustainable principle: build it well, and it will endure for many generations. >> XMAS_‘23 ISSUE

ringing together simplicity, contemporary design, and experimental form, Irina Falzon stands as a prominent luxury womenswear designer based in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta. Her unique approach to fashion revolves around the fusion of conceptualism with the tangible, weaving together elements of nature and fashion for a purpose. Irina’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in her choice of materials, often opting for the unconventional to craft pieces that transcend traditional boundaries. Just take one look at her beautiful clothing labels, handmade from prickly pear cactus plants. “It takes hours of tinkering around to find the right formula, texture and look. I can spend entire nights experimenting with an idea,” Irina confesses.
Irina’s design process is an intricate dance between concept and execution. When embarking on a new collection, she delves into a chosen concept, inspired mainly by nature or reoccurring solid themes in her life, such as bold colours and the importance of flowers.
In the realm of fashion, where trends evolve rapidly and competition is fierce, emerging designers face formidable challenges. According to Irina, the primary hurdle lies in competing with fast fashion and educating younger generations on the importance of sustainability.
The journey begins with sourcing images and researching keywords related to the concept, laying the foundation for exploring colours, shapes, and fabric choices. Irina’s preference for experimentation is palpable as she takes to the stand to play with draping, printing and dying techniques before translating her visions onto the finest of silks. The culmination of this meticulous process results in hours and hours of work, from which she carefully selects and refines the best to shape the final collection for Privilege Couture.
The journey to a complete collection inevitably demands time, unwavering commitment, and financial investment, followed by the equally daunting task of promoting and selling it. While prestigious, high-profile events like Fashion Week present substantial financial barriers and intense competition. Irina emphasises that success in the industry is far from guaranteed, requiring designers to prove their potential over multiple seasons before garnering serious attention. >> XMAS_‘23 ISSUE

[...“A DISTINGUISHING FEATURE OF IRINA’S WORK IS HER BOLD USE OF UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS, SUCH AS SAFFRON FLOWERS AND OTHER PLANTS, TO CREATE THE MOST INTRICATE PATTERNS; ”...]
Looking ahead, Irina envisions a future where her brand secures a prominent position in the world of luxury fashion. Her aspirations involve dressing women who want to feel good and unique- as, after all, no two pieces in her collection are the same. As real-life plants form the basis of her print design, it’s impossible! More than mere commercial success, Irina desires her label to be synonymous with an established reputation and recognition for sustainability, with her pieces becoming sought-after treasures proudly displayed in wardrobes worldwide. “We need to take a few steps back and see how our ancestors were creating special garments- and the answers lie in nature”, Irina adds. While some designers draw inspiration from established icons in the industry, Irina takes a unique approach, emphasising her own ideas as the driving force behind her creations, alongside hours and hours of research- a simple quote or historical period can spur her to create. Nevertheless, she acknowledges the influence of working with some of the world’s most renowned fashion houses in Italy and Romania before starting her brand in Malta. A distinguishing feature of Irina’s work is her bold use of unconventional materials, such as saffron flowers and other plants, to create the most intricate patterns; just one glimpse at her work and you’ll appreciate it is awe-inspiring. The decision to incorporate these unexpected elements stems from her desire to stand out in a crowded field. Irina’s journey growing up in communist Romania has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on her creativity. >> 086

“There were no colours back then, so we had to create and go one step further to bring ideas to life. Each year my sister and I would work the hardest to become the top of the class, so we would be awarded a floral crown”. With that sentiment Irina quickly shares a photo of her sister as a young girl with the most beautiful floral crown, and shares another anecdote of looking forward to the women’s day events in her rural village, purely for the floral displays. It’s certainly evident flowers resonate deeply with Irina. “Nowadays anyone that knows me on a special occasion sends me flowers! I simply love them!” she exclaims. Unfazed by the prevalence of this theme in the industry, she sought to delve deeper, introducing plants and flowers as an innovative embellishment technique, subtle yet groundbreaking in its inconspicuous integration. Irina’s careful sourcing of materials underscores the importance of differentiation in the competitive fashion world, where uniqueness is not just a choice but a necessity for those aspiring to make a lasting mark. HIT THE HIGH STREET! I
ity of online shopping and embrace the diversity and individuality that local businesses bring to the table.
n an era currently dominated by online retail giants and the convenience of virtual shopping carts, it’s almost too easy to shop! Just reach over for your card, and as easy as that, the item will be on its way to you. While the convenience of online shopping is no doubt a game changer for many of us with our hectic lives, what if this year we unbusy ourselves just a little and shop locally?
The personal touch provided by local businesses extends beyond the products themselves. The lady behind the counter that recognises you? The shopkeeper who can suggest you something tailored to your tastes based on their experience? Many small businesses prioritise building customer relationships, offering personalised service and a welcoming atmosphere. In-person communication allows for genuine connections between customers and business owners. This vital personal connection is all too often absent in the digital realm, where transactions are often impersonal and automated. As we continue to navigate a post-pandemic world, the importance of community resilience and adaptability is more apparent than ever.
There is a growing movement urging consumers to rediscover the joys of shopping locally and in person, and you’ll feel much more involved and connected as a result. This year, more than ever, there is a compelling case for stepping away from the screens, putting down the mobile and immersing ourselves in the unique experience of in-person, local shopping. After all, if we rely on click-to-door too often, what will become of small independent traders and the charm of real shops?
There’s no denying local businesses have faced unprecedented challenges, and their survival depends on the support of their community. By choosing to shop in person, you contribute to the sustainability of these businesses, helping them recover and thrive in a changing landscape.
One of the most compelling reasons to shop locally is the positive impact on the community. Local businesses are the lifeblood of neighbourhoods, contributing to their economic vitality and creating a sense of identity. When you choose to shop at a local outlet, you are not just making another transaction; you are investing in the well-being of your community. Local businesses are often owned and operated by people you know, your neighbours, friends, and by supporting them, you help strengthen the local economy.
