FOREWORD BY THE HEADMASTER The College has also enjoyed considerable sporting success with many local, regional and national titles being won in 2017-18. Individually students have achieved significant success supported by the College and its staff. Academic awards for Young Enterprise, for Public Speaking, the UK Maths Trust and Physics Olympiads have also given great depth to the students’ learning. Great joy was also to be found in the numerous public performances of music and drama from High School Musical to Shakespeare. The Salesian ideal is to recognise the needs of others and then do something about it. As well as raising in excess of £16,000 in charitable funds, the students and staff have donated immense numbers of hours in events, pilgrimages and charity drives such as their support for the Sean Devereux Children’s Fund, the local Foodbank, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Step by Step homeless project, HCPT Welcome to this edition of Salesian 2018. The academic year 2017 – 2018 was a joyful celebration of the full life of

service to the College in 1968 and he continues to this day to provide a presence in the College just as Don Bosco would have it. In January on the feast of St John Bosco we particularly remembered the life of Sean Devereaux on the 25th Anniversary of his death. We were joined at Mass by members of his family, friends and alumni of the College. He clearly inspires and continues to provide the example of service which encourages many of our students to this day, especially evident in Lourdes and in Zambia as part of the Share the Light Charity.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN'S FAREWELL SPEECH Firstly, I would like to say thank you on behalf of the current student leadership team. Without the support from our peers and the staff, we would not have had the incredible opportunity to lead the student body for the past year. A year ago, I delivered my first speech as School Captain and I used a quote from Aristotle to describe how we, the leadership team and College, would attempt to tackle our new roles. I quoted Aristotle who proposed that: ‘Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.’ Whilst perfection is perhaps unattainable, I would like to congratulate those in Year 13, who have held leadership positions this past year, on being outstanding, near-perfect, servants to the College. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the incoming School Captain, Head Girl and the new leadership team, and indeed all the new Officers and I wish them all the best for the coming academic year. On behalf of all Year 13 leavers, I would like to thank the staff who have been so instrumental in our happy and successful time at Salesian. Albert Einstein said that ‘A ship is safe on the shore, but that is not what it is built for.’ The ship, as we are, is built for adventure. Don’t be happy accepting monotony. Don’t be afraid to do something new or challenging because you feel out of your comfort zone. In fact, remove your comfort zone all together. We have all been blessed with opportunities at Salesian— often, they will require us to step out of our comfort zone. Immerse yourself in something new, something perhaps you may have been unwilling to try previously. You may learn something about yourself or even find a new hobby or interest for life. Salesian College has provided us, and continues to provide you all, with plenty of opportunities to enrich ourselves. Having been at the College for 7 years, I have been blessed with these opportunities. I encourage you all to take every opportunity presented to you through the College. Similarly, be prepared for, and look forward to, change. Ensure that, when you look back on your time at Salesian, you have fond memories. I wish you all every success in the future. Thank you. Joseph

YEAR 7 VISIT TO ALICE HOLT At the end of the first half term, the intrepid Year 7s visited Alice Holt forest for a day of team building and orienteering. In the morning they had a fresher course on map reading before leading routes around the forest. The boys learnt how to read contour lines, symbols and grid references as well as how paper maps relate to the ‘real life’ environment. After lunch the boys worked in groups of five to collect as many markers as possible around the forest, using the orienteering map for clues.

A LEVEL BIOLOGY VISIT TO JUNIPER HALL
RIPPER CRIME WALK
It was a cold September day, with grey clouds and a lazy wind. Clearly, the perfect day for… The Biology Field Course! The mission: to succeed in understanding succession The plan: go to a field study centre, get some science, get out to find evidence The locations: Juniper Hall and Mickleham Down
45 History and Drama students (GCSE and A level) completed the famous Ripper walk touring the haunts of Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel. Led by able guides, students were immersed in to the lives of the Ripper’s victims and their worlds. The students stood on the spots of the gruesome murders and found out how each was murdered, their discovery and the failings of the police force. The walk supports their studies for Crime and Punishment for History GCSE students and storytelling for the GCSE and A level Drama students.
SHAKESPEARE FOR SCHOOLS
Armed with nothing more than quadrats, tape measures, pencils and paper, the students were soon equipped with extra kit: hygrometers and the awesome spherical densiometer. Using these tools they found out why wild parsnip grows in one place and how the change of Mickleham Down’s use from gallops once used by Epsom Racecourse to a lightly used nature reserve has affected its vegetation.
The Shakespeare for Schools Festival is the UK's largest youth drama festival, a nationwide celebration of the work of Shakespeare with over 1,000 schools participating in 150 professional theatres. This year, the students took part in the Festival cast workshop and performance evening at G-Live where they performed 'Twelfth Night' to great acclaim.
Finally, cake at tea time was swiftly followed by a plenary session. When they got back to school their data followed. This meant the students could carry out a statistical analysis to allow them to have some confidence that their results were not merely results of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

BATTLEFIELDS TOUR 2017 In November, 92 Year 9 students, 4 Year 12 students and staff took part in the annual Battlefields Tour visit to The Ypres Salient and the Northern France battlefields of World War One. Day 1 was centered on the town of Ypres, which included visits to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest commonwealth cemetery in Belgium and Langemarck, the well-known German cemetery. The Passchendaele Museum was an interactive experience and the evening culminated with our annual participation in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. 12 members of the party, all with relatives who died on the Western Front, were able to take part in the wreath laying ceremony.
www.salesiancollege.com
Day 2 was based around the Arras area with visits to the Arras Memorial, the underground tunnels at Wellington Quarry and Neuville-Saint-Vaast German cemetery, the largest German military cemetery in France. The Tour concluded with a Service of Remembrance at the Church of Notre Dame de Lorette, the largest French cemetery on the Western Front, and a visit to the Ring of Remembrance, a memorial which opened in August 2014, which highlights the names of 580,000 men who died in the region during WW1 – the largest war memorial in the world. Thank you to all the students who were enthusiastic and excellent ambassadors for the College and to all the accompanying staff and our Anglia Tours guides.

LESSONS FROM AUSCHWITZ PROJECT Two Year 12 students and the chaplain from Salesian College were selected to take part in this autumn's Lessons from Auschwitz project. On Tuesday 14 November 2017 they joined about 250 other sixth formers from South East England on a memorable day visit to O_wi_cim and the SS extermination camps nearby. The day began with an early morning charter flight from Gatwick to Krakรณw where five coaches were waiting to ferry the students and participating teachers to O_wi_cim. On arrival the groups walked to the Market Square, where guides introduced us to the normal life of the residents (about 60% Jewish) before the Holocaust. The coaches then drove us to Auschwitz I, the former Polish army barracks where existing brick buildings were used to house the first prisoners. They saw the gate with the chilling words 'Arbeit macht frei' (Work makes you free), the opposite of the fate awaiting those who passed under them, and the remains of the first gas chamber and crematorium. The buildings now house museum exhibits, evidence of the callous efficiency of the SS, including detailed documents and thousands of suitcases, shoes and other items taken from the men, women and children who met their death.
www.salesiancollege.com
From there the coaches made the short journey to Auschwitz II or Birkenau, built to extend the killing to an industrial scale. They saw the railway line, passing under the iconic watch tower, on which cattle trucks transported thousands of Jews and other oppressed people from many parts of Europe. The students saw the vast area once occupied by hundreds of wooden huts, housing those who were not murdered immediately after arrival. Reconstructed buildings gave us some idea of the terrible conditions. They also saw the ruins of one of the four gas chambers and the building where prisoners were deprived of their dignity and identity before being forced into slave labour. After nightfall, as it grew colder, they all gathered at the Memorial for a time of reflection, with readings from poetry and scripture and an address from a Rabbi, who also sang a Hebrew prayer. The students lit candles and then walked quietly back along the railway line, to return to the coaches, reverse the journey to the comfort of our homes, and try to process our experiences. A long but memorable day. The visit to Auschwitz was preceded by an Orientation Seminar and followed up with a further meeting to share impressions and plan for future action, including presentations by the participants to other students at their schools or colleges.

YEARS 7 AND 8 ENJOY FRENCH PLAY
A LEVEL FRENCH TRIP
Students in Years 7 and 8 enjoyed the Onatti Production of ‘Mes chers voisins’ (My dear neighbours). This was a French play about two neighbours and their life at school, their exam results, music taste (Justin Bieber!) and going out together. The students loved the play and the feedback was very positive.
On 20 October, Madame Stone took four French A Level students to the French Institute in London. In the morning the students took part in a workshop, followed by watching the film ‘Girlhood’ in the afternoon. The film was about four girls living in the suburb of Paris and about what friendship means. Other topics such as racism, immigration and integration which the students study at A Level were also covered in the film. It was a very interesting day and the students found it very useful.
ALTON COMEDY REVUE Students from the Drama Enrichment course took part in Alton School's Comedy Revue - a charity event in aid of HCPT. The students performed a range of acts from comedy sketches to beautiful dances!

RETREATS In the Autumn Term, Year 7 enjoyed their first Salesian Retreat at Mary Help of Christians Parish Church. They spent the day with their forms, getting to know each other and reflecting on their hopes for the future. Many boys had the opportunity to talk with members of the Sixth Form who came to join them for parts of their day. The highlight for many though, may have been the lunchtime trip to the local park!
www.salesiancollege.com
Year 8 have also had their retreat day at St John’s in Wonersh. They spent the day off site in the wonderful surroundings, reflecting on the plight of refugees and social justice. Next term, Year 9 will have their Retreat which will focus on reflections from the Holocaust and will involve the unique and privileged experience of listening to the testimony of a survivor. Year 11 will take part in their final Retreat as they reflect on their five years at Salesian College, whilst looking ahead to the next.

SLEEPOVER IN THE LIBRARY
Eleven boys from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 donated money to secure their place on the Library floor for the evening! Having arrived at approximately 8.30pm on Friday evening, the boys wasted no time in setting up their camps for the night. They all then went over to the Sixth Form building for an evening of fun and games including table football and a variety of board games - with sweets, popcorn and chocolate thrown in for good measure! Once back in the library, the evening was rounded off with the boys enjoying ‘War Games’ in the dark, led by Mr Maher followed by stories and poems written by the boys and lights out around midnight. The 2017 Sleepover raised £430 for Mrs Mweete’s Porridge Club. This money will be used to provide a nutritious breakfast for many children over the next year. Huge thanks must go to Mr Maher and Miss Lindquist for making the event possible. We would also like to thank Hayley and her brilliant Chartwells team for providing the much appreciated snacks and drinks for the evening and breakfast for the boys in the morning. Special thanks finally to the Maintenance Team for keeping the heating on for us and supporting us through the planning for this much anticipated event!

SPANISH EXCHANGE WITH SALESIAN SOTO, MADRID On the 14 December, Mrs Cardona and a group of Sixth Form Spanish students travelled to Spain to take part in the annual Spanish Exchange with a Salesian School which this year was near Madrid. The students stayed with families and experienced the Spanish lifestyle and speaking Spanish. Some of the activities organised were visits to the medieval town of Toledo to explore the town through Graffiti Hunting, to the city of Madrid visiting El Prado Museum and the Old Masters of Spanish painting : El Greco, Goya and Velazquez. Also, the Temple of Debod, the Senate of Spain, the Royal Palace, the Catholic Cathedrals of Los Jeronimos and La Almudena, the Plaza Mayor, the Puerta del Sol, the Gran Via and the Plaza Cibeles. They experienced Spanish school life participating in Christmas activities such as a landmark spotting game, a Life Nativity, lessons, projects and presentations. They also attended a formal dinner where they dressed up elegantly and attended two Mass celebrations to reflect about the meaning of Christmas. It was an amazing experience and thanks and gratitude go to the Salesian Community in Soto del Real (Madrid), to the staff at the school, and the families who hosted, for their genuine generosity and welcome. Special thanks go to Maria de la Pena Sanz (Coordinator), Pedro Hernandez (Deputy Head Pastoral) and Miguel Astudillo (Headmaster) for their impeccable organisation and Salesian espirit. The Spanish students made the return visit to Farnborough in June and had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of cultural activities including a trip to the West End to see ‘Wicked’, a visit to Windsor and a Tour of Oxford University.

MAKE SOME NOISE
YOUTH SPEAKS
Nine of our Year 9 students attended an exciting Salesian ‘youth-gather’ at Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton, on Friday 22 – Saturday 23 September organised by the Salesian Youth Ministry team. This was the second year of the event was such a success that it is hope it will become an annual event. 350 young people (aged 13+) from schools, parishes and youth groups across the UK came together for a 24-hour experience of Salesian hospitality, sharing in opportunities for fun, prayer and the chance to get to know other young people. There were a whole host of activities, such as fair ground rides, sports events and more which our Year 9 students thoroughly enjoyed. The students all slept in classrooms and a highlight for our boys was spending the night in the Harry Potter themed library!
On 22 November, three Year 9 students took part in the prestigious Youth Speaks Competition hosted by the Farnham Rotary Club and held at the University of Creative Arts. Harvey Q was the team Chairperson, Rory S gave the main speech and Charlie K gave the Vote of Thanks. The boys spoke confidently and eloquently on the topic of 'Violence in computer games'. They presented their opinions maturely and demonstrated a talent for public speaking; we hope to see them participate in many more events in the future. Well done Harvey, Rory and Charlie. The following evening, students once again took to the stage to participate in the Senior Youth Speaks competition run by Farnham Rotary Club and held at the University of Creative Arts, Farnham. Brian S Chaired the veteran team with Sam R enlightening the audience to the principle of 'Lagom'. Joe W proposed the thanks and closed an outstanding presentation from the experienced team. Jamie O lead the up and coming Year 10 team with Max L discussing 'What makes us successful?'. Shree K proposed the thanks with professionalism and closed a presentation which demonstrated that these young men are ones to watch for the future.
RACE NIGHT RAISES £2,876.59 On Saturday 7 October, a large group of students, staff and parents gathered to participate in our annual Race Night raising a magnificent £2,876.59. Thank you to all our Sixth Form volunteers and our PTA who worked so hard to make the event a success.

PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR FUTURE CAREERS On 5 October, the College held a Careers evening focused on skills preparation for the world of work. This was a joint event with Dane Partnership (HR, training & Recruitment Company). The feedback from both students and professionals was very positive. Techniques for writing covering letters and emails, selling yourself, the law, interview preparation before the meeting and the chance to impress employers were some of the skills covered during the workshops. On 13 October, our Sixth Form language students had the opportunity to visit one of the major events for Languages in the UK "The London Language Show 2017" at the Design and Business Centre, London. During the day, they had the chance to listen and speak to professionals about careers in languages and to learn about CV preparation. In the afternoon, our students visited different stands and spoke to different providers. There was an update about languages and the different trends in careers and the digital world. On 18 October, an Interview Evening for the Upper Sixth Form students was held. The College welcomed professionals from a variety of industries who formally interviewed our students. Both professionals and students benefited from this event which also allowed a good amount of networking. On 17 November, a number of interested students from Year 12 attended a talk on applying to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge by Dr. Lydia Cole. Dr. Cole is an Environmental Scientist, most recently working at Rezatec on a European Space Agency-funded feasibility project to develop a service for identifying the location, depth and intactness of peat. She completed her DPhil at Oxford in 2013, and subsequently worked at the Department of Zoology, teaching Biological Sciences in her role at St Hugh’s College. Prior to this she obtained a BA in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Cole used her experience at both universities to give the students an overview of life at Oxford and Cambridge, and an outline of the admissions procedure. She then ‘interviewed’ Dr. Carrel to demonstrate the format of the oral tests and interviews at Oxford and Cambridge for the students.

the evening; toasting marshmallows and listening to music. An early start saw them raft building, climbing “Jacob’s Ladder” and trusting each other during a sensory trail! After a quiz that evening and some epic DJ-ing from Miss Kennedy, the students braved the rain back to their lodgings ready for another jam-packed day in the morning. Returning home on Sunday, the sleepy group went home to rest; exhausted from the fun bonding experiences the weekend offered.

HCPT PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES Once again the Year 12 students spent Easter Week in Lourdes helping with the HCPT Pilgrimage for children with disabilities. The students and staff were fully engaged in their dual role of assisting with the smooth running of the pilgrimage and being directly involved with children in the family groups. After each meal in the hotel the students were given their tasks for the next few hours, including organising games and parties, leading prayers and singing outside the baths, welcoming groups visiting Hosanna House, providing musical support for group and regional Masses, pushing wheelchairs, stewarding at processions and coach parks. In the less busy moments, some

students were able to visit places associated with the life of Saint Bernadette, climb the tower of the Chateau Fort, make a private visit to the Grotto, or even enjoy an icecream. The theme for the HCPT Pilgrimage, chosen by the American Special Children’s Pilgrimage Group, was ‘You are Special’. Salesian College and Alton School were privileged to be asked to provide some musicians and members of the choir for the major liturgical events. These services involved many hours of rehearsal, both in England and during the first part of the week in Lourdes.

25TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION OF SEAN DEVEREUX
BEBRAS OXFORD UNIVERSITY COMPUTING CHALLENGE Congratulations to Josh who made it to the finals of the Bebras Oxford University Computing Challenge
On the Feast of Saint John Bosco, we commemorated the 25th Anniversary of one of our former pupils who was inspired by our founder to live out his Salesian ideals to the full. Sean Devereux was a natural leader with a mischievous sense of fun, who devoted himself to the young people of Africa, especially in Liberia and in Somalia, where he was assassinated on 3 January 1993.
Talented Year 7 student Josh W was invited to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford on Sunday 11 February as a finalist in a UK-wide computing competition – The UK BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge. Reaching the final of the Junior age group is an impressive achievement, as 41,372 students entered the first round for the age group (10–12). Josh was among the top 60 highest achieving students invited to the final round in his age group, and was presented with his finalist’s certificate at a prize giving ceremony at Hertford College.
The Mass at Salesian College was led by Fr Gerry Briody SDB, the Salesian Provincial in Great Britain. Mrs Maureen Devereux, Sean’s mother, joined the students and staff together with over fifty guests from his family, his contemporaries and his fellow-workers. After Mass, the students were given a half-day holiday while the visitors and staff gathered in the McGuinness Music School for a buffet lunch and a chance to share their recollections.
The UK BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge, supported by Google, is designed to get students excited about computing and computational thinking. It is a problem-solving contest with questions inspired by topics in computer science. In the first round, held in their own schools, students have to try and solve as many problems as possible in the allotted time. There are six age categories. The highest scoring students from the four oldest age groups (Elite, Senior, Intermediate, and Junior) were then invited to the Department of Computer Science at Oxford for the finals over two weekends in January and February.

CATENIAN CHEQUE PRESENTATION
On 27 February, the College hosted a Careers Convention for Years 11 and 12. The convention was very well attended and the students had the opportunity to listen to several presentations about their career choice. This was a very informative afternoon with more than 30 presenters speaking about a wide variety of fields from companies such as: BBC Big Hat British Airways Citizen Advice Bureau Handelsbanken Inspiring Futures Mandala Wealth OSAF Sense Business Development Ltd. Specsavers St. James's Place Wealth Management Tante Marie Culinary Academy The School Musicals Company YPI Counselling
Representatives of the Catenian Association presented cheques to 10 of our Sixth Form students to support their Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
A follow-up was implemented in the Summer Term between students and presenters in order to establish a Mentorship programme. We are extremely grateful to our professional speakers for their attendance, generous time and contribution to the Careers programme and we hope to strengthen our partnerships in the future.
PTA QUIZ EVENING
On Saturday 3 February, the PTA Quiz night raised £2,500 for the Sean Devereux Childrens’ Fund and £1,000 for the PTA. The event was sold out a week before the closing date and had close to 340 players on 38 teams. Big Fry once again delivered the order of more than 375 portions of food, on time, perfect quantities and piping hot ensuring the evening ran like clockwork. POLITICS DAY
On the anniversary of women first getting the right to vote 100 years ago, the College hosted a politics afternoon for our Year 12 students. With the help of three former students, all of whom studied at Oxbridge, the students took part in a range of political discussion and debates. With low turnout rates for elections and political parties failing to mobilise the young it would be easy to assume that young people are disengaged with politics. Salesian College is responding and recognising young people’s desire to be engaged and involved in society and develop the future leaders by introducing politics A level. The College will analyse the systems in place and how young people can get their voice heard.
GCSE & A LEVEL ART TRIP
On Monday 5 March, the Art Department (Miss Hinds, Mr Bannister and Mr Melvin) travelled with 30 GCSE and A Level Art students on a trip to two London Galleries; the National and the Tate Modern. The students were working towards their examinations and it is always a great opportunity for them to discover new inspiration for their work, whether that is of a more traditional, canvas painting preference or a more modern and conceptual approach. An afternoon walk through London and along the Thames also provided students with a chance to take photographs of buildings and structures for their respective projects. An enjoyable rewarding day out was had by all and we are looking forward to see how the inspiration manifests itself with the students own artwork.

101 Year 7 students and 13 members of staff enjoyed a great trip to the Lake District. The group were blessed with good weather. The boys were good company and relished the challenges presented to them in all the activities. The outward bound activities were run by ‘Glaramara’ and ‘Platty +’ and included Via Ferrata; Ghyll Scrambling; Kayaking; Canoe Expedition; Stand up Paddling; Rock Climbing/Abseiling and an Adventure Walk. The boys also went Orienteering up at the Whinlatter Forest.
Just in case the boys hadn’t used up all their energy during the day, the staff ran, and joined in with, evening activities which included a pool tournament, a table tennis tournament, a chess tournament; a football tournament and a bingo night (thank you to Mrs Tonks for organising this very popular event!). The boys were delighted to see our Chaplain, Fr Pat Sherlock SDB, who brought his ‘joke for the day’ to the Lakes and said Mass on the Sunday, where the boys got a chance to exercise their lungs as they sang along to Fr Pat’s guitar. YEAR 10 TO 13 VISIT KRAKOV, POLAND During their trip to Krakow and Auschwitz during half term, 44 students visited the Salesian Parish of Saint Stanislaus & St John Bosco in Debniki, where St John Paul II had been a parishioner. The students were welcomed by Fr Zygmunt SDB and, as it was Ash Wednesday, he administered the ashes to the group. It was from this parish that on 23 May 1941, that Fr Józef Kowalski (19111942) along with eleven Salesians were arrested and transported to Auschwitz. In May 1942, Fr Józef Kowalski was killed after refusing to trample on his rosary. He was beatified in Warsaw in 1999 by Pope John Paul II. The half term trip also included visits to the Jewish Ghetto, Wawel Castle, Oskar Schindler’s Factory, the Divine Mercy Shrine, Wadowice (the birthplace of Pope John Paul II) and the Wieliczka Salt Mine and was a truly memorable experience for all involved.

GOOD SHEPHERD MASS
FROM SALESIAN TO SOLDIER Many thanks to alumnus Second Lieutenant Jordan Whiteman for giving up his time to talk to students about his journey "From Salesian to Soldier".
The annual Good Shepherd Mass at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth, was held on Thursday 21 June, the feast day of St Aloysius Gonzaga, the Patron Saint of students. This year, 12 Year 8 students represented the College and four of these were members of the choir for the Mass. Bishop Philip told of his visit to Bamenda, Cameroon, and of the special link that the Diocese has had for more than 40 years with that part of Africa. He spoke of sponsored projects and reciprocal visits with our twinned Diocese. He then came to meet the students in “cathedral park” during the picnic lunch and spoke to each group from the all schools assembled there.
AUTHOR CHRIS BRADFORD MAKES A WELCOME VISIT
Our students then travelled on to Southsea for the afternoon, visiting the seafront and the newly refurbished D-Day Museum Cafe. There we met Mr John Jenkins MBE, a Normandy veteran and a volunteer at the Museum. His personal recollections of D-Day and the campaign that followed to free Europe was very interesting and much appreciated. BANK OF ENGLAND AND BRAND MUSEUM With the AS exams complete, the students went on a trip to London to experience business in the real world and to gain knowledge for their A2 syllabus. The students met at “The Clock” on Waterloo Station and caught the underground to Bank Underground Station. A two minute walk and they arrived at the Bank of England Museum. The strict security checks meant that there was a slight delay and the students must have thought they were going on holiday, but after this process we proceeded to the presentation hall for the “Even Keel” presentation. A Bank of England member of staff presented the creation, history and motivation for the Bank of England’s existence and how important it is to keeping the economy in check and all the stakeholders that are involved in the everyday decision and strategy forecast for the economy. This perspective brought Economics to reality as they had covered part of Monetary Policy in AS. This was followed up by some movie clips which further enhanced the recognition of the Bank of England as a major policy maker in the economy and that the fact that the Bank of England does not always get it right. The students then took a walk around the museum but most noted by the staff were the students challenging one another to pick up the solid gold bar with one hand - which resulted in some very clever banter. The group then travelled by underground across London and after a short walk arrived at the Brand Museum. They had a presentation on the founding father of the Brand Museum and how it came to life and to its present location. It was fascinating for the students (and staff) as they could delve into memories of their younger days. What was of most interest was how they remembered their grandparents or even parents having some of the items on display which brought back fond memories of their childhood. From a Business and Economics perspective they got to see how consumer tastes and trends have changed over the decades and how some companies could not deal with change and disappeared off the shelves. Others that survived clearly adapted to the advancement in technology and packaging which was cleverly displayed in the different decades.

DIOCESAN EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS
BOLTY BANDANA DAY
On Friday 4 May, a group of students from Years 9 and 10 went to Portsmouth to take part in a day of ‘Fun, Faith and Worship’ for Catholic secondary schools in the Diocese. Accompanied by Mr Crean, Mrs Murphy and Fr Sherlock, they heard inspirational talks from various speakers, including Bishop Philip Egan, listened to hymns led by the Youth 2000 music ministry group, and spent time in silent adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The event took place in the auditorium of the New Theatre Royal, but a feature of the afternoon was a procession through the streets around the theatre, during which our students carried candles and the ornate canopy which focussed attention on the bishop holding the monstrance.
Thank you to all of the students, staff and parents who helped raise over £726 through Bolty Bandana Day 2018 for the Alex Bolt Fund and the fight against brain tumours.

YEAR 7 VISIT THE HAWK CONSERVANCY It was when the Milky Eagle Owl flew over a few inches over their heads that Year 7 realised this was no ordinary trip. There, at the Hawk Conservancy near Andover, then followed a cluster of avian variety ranging from Ibis to griffon vulture, helping students understand about adaptations of birds to hunting and the conservation activity needed to increase the numbers of these endangered creatures. The stand out of the show was the "Jackie Chan" bird - the secretary bird - whose high kicking antics to deal with (in this case rubber) snakes captivated many eyes and imaginations. With perfect blue skies and gentle winds to aid the feathered actors to fully display their skills, this was a fantastic day and most of us would quite happily have missed the coaches home to see more.

YEAR 8 PARIS TRIP On Saturday 16 June, 53 Year 8 students and seven members of staff set off for a four-day excursion to Paris. The group were blessed with generally good weather and smooth journeys, and were able to take in a number of sites and attractions. They visited the Louvre, The Stade de France, Parc Asterix, the Tour Montparnasse, had a boat cruise down the Seine and stopped at a hypermarket for a spot of shopping. The boys were a credit to the school, and a great time was had by all. Many thanks to all the boys for their participation, and to the staff who made the trip such a success.

AMENDOEIRA GOLF AND TENNIS TOUR, JULY 2018 The summer Golf and Tennis Tour to the Amendoeira Resort, Algarve, proved to be a memorable tour once again. The luxury accommodation and food were superb with a spectacular view from the main Clubhouse. All the boys enjoyed the resort swimming pool every day and night-time floodlit golf proved very popular with both tennis and golfers alike after dinner. The golfers played six rounds including the two resort courses and the outstanding Laguna golf course and
Pinhal golf course, part of the Dom Pedro Golf Collection. Excellent practice facilities enabled all the boys to have constant access to improve their game. The tennis players enjoyed two sessions of very high quality coaching every day from a team of four enthusiastic tennis coaches. Each session focussed on different aspects of the game including conditioning, shot selection and match play. A visit to play at the Pestana Clay Court Club was a highlight of the week.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHERS IN THE PEAK DISTRICT As part of the GCSE Geography course students are required to carry out fieldwork to complete their controlled assessment. This year, like many before, the group visited the area surrounding Castleton in the stunning Peak District National Park. The students were immersed within this landscape for the full three days enjoying activities as diverse as canoeing in Combe Reservoir, a night hike along ‘the great ridge’, exploring underground caverns and climbing on the longest inland cliff in the UK at Stanage Edge. The trip was not all fun and games however; two full geographical investigations were completed. One project looked at the impact tourism is having on
Castleton and the other considered how flooding could be prevented using a range of different strategies. The students impressed staff with their conscientious surveying and sampling of local ice cream. The weather was mostly very kind, except for two deluges of ‘fat’ rain. I’m hoping that political correctness doesn’t extend to precipitation. Anyway, a rare geographical phenomenon to be sure! The boys and Geography department would like to thank Mrs Moseley (who returned all too briefly for the trip), Mr Berryman and making a long awaited debut, Mr Bunyan, for giving up their weekend to make this trip possible.

A REFLECTION OF ZAMBIA The purpose of the Salesian visit was to help at the small, but resilient, girls’ school called the City of Joy, at Masabuka, in the countryside outside Lusaka, the Zambian capital. Along with helping the girls with school work and helping at the afternoon Oratory session (very similar to a kid’s club), we were also tasked with painting and redecorating one of the girls houses and repairing the playground. This proved very worthwhile, as renovating parts of the school site allowed the Sisters there to accept more girls into the school who urgently need the chance of a better future. Our efforts did not stop there, as we also taught various subjects at nearby Luyobolola School to classes of Year 8 and 9 students. My group taught Biology and we were amazed and humbled at how eager the children were to
www.salesiancollege.com
learn all the new words and information that we were trying to teach them. After our three lessons, we spent the children’s breaktime preparing and serving porridge at the very popular Porridge Club. This initiative is run by the school to provide the pupils with a meal, thereby giving them an incentive to come to school and learn. Although the number of children who turned up for the Porridge was overwhelming at the time, it really showed me how important the food was to these children. It may have been their only food that day. Moreover, the porridge gives them the energy to travel home, which for some is up to two hours on foot. One of the more difficult and thought- provoking parts of the trip was the afternoon I spent within the Masabuka shanty town, where we gave aid to particularly poor and
Brochure SUMMER 22/10/2018 11:06 Page 24
disadvantaged families. The ‘Nutrition Programme’ there is directly funded by charity raised at my school, which showed me exactly how much good Share the Light can do if generously supported. This also inspires me to help the charity in the future, so that the Nutrition Programme can continue its good work. In hindsight, meeting the people of Masabuka in person and glimpsing the reality of their daily struggles, gives me the desire and enthusiasm to advocate for this charity in the future, supporting Salesian and Share the Light to be able to return to Zambia in the coming years to continue their worthwhile work. Reflecting on the trip, I believe we managed to fulfil the aims of the trip. Through the use of education and aid, we managed to empower the girls at the City of Joy and the wider community of Masabuka. Our new scholarship
programme has been designed to sponsor the girls to allow them to access higher education past secondary school. It is then hoped a new generation of educated, confident and more financially independent young women will be able to improve the future outlook of both themselves and their communities, including a brighter future for Masabuka. As well as giving, we volunteers also gained: in experience, in knowledge and in enthusiasm for a cause which is now close to all out hearts. Before we went to Zambia, we had only heard of the plight of the people in Masabuka. However, having now seen it first hand, we can understand the situation and its complexities so much more clearly and also realise what needs to be done to continue the charities good work. Joe

OUTSTANDING A LEVEL RESULTS The College once again celebrated excellent A level results with a 100% pass rate and 76% of grades awarded in the A*-B range and 48% of grades in the A*-A range which is the highest figure ever for the College. The academic achievement of the students’ further builds on the enviable reputation which the College enjoys as one of the highest achieving Sixth Form providers in Hampshire. This summer’s Year 13 cohort saw almost 57% of the students achieve A*-B in three or more A Levels. Of particular note were the fifteen students (24% of the year group) who achieved three or more A* or A grades each. Amongst these were Haris K. and Matthew P. who both attained four A* grades. Haris will go onto Bristol University to read Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Matthew will go to Durham University to read Modern European Languages with History. Phillip B. (Medicine, Queen Mary’s), James C.

(Economics, Nottingham) and Patrick L. (Biological Sciences, University of Oxford) each attained 3A* grades. Also worthy of particular mention are Eleanor G. (Medicine, Cardiff), Nicole H. (English and Drama, Exeter), Jason K. (Electronic & Info. Engineering, Imperial College) and Greg K. (Philosophy, St Andrew’s) who attained 2A*s and 1A and Christopher P. with 1A* and 3 A grades (Civil Engineering, Bristol). Matthew R. achieved 1A*, 1A and 1 B grades (English and Film Studies, Exeter) and a further eight students achieved straight A*/A grades including out-going College Captain, Joseph A. who is going to the University of Exeter to read International Relations, Patrick B. (Business Management, Birmingham) George G. (Law, Warwick), Sara G-B. (Childhood Studies, Bristol) and Oliver W. Several more students achieved AAB or better and all of these, along with the vast majority of their colleagues, will be taking up places at a range of top universities this autumn.

CHELSEA FOOTBALL STADIUM TRIP
FORM OF THE YEAR
GCSE Business Studies Year 10 ‘The Business of Football’ to Chelsea Football Stadium Trip Nothing could damper the spirits of the boys as they departed to visit Chelsea Football Stadium to learn about the business of running a football club. They were going to use the theory they had learned about running a business and see it in practise. The fact that it was the sport of football trying to run as a profitable business was an added attraction. The students learned about Chelsea’s incomes and expenditure - a profitable business with a very high turnover. They also learned how important it is to maintain the Chelsea brand, to please their sponsors and how hard it is for a football business to have a competitive advantage. Staff were pleased to see how attentive the students were during the tour by answering questions showing good business knowledge and a real interest in the business of the sport. The guides were impressed by the students’ knowledge and engagement. Thanks to all the staff for assisting, but more importantly for the boys for being so well behaved and engrossed during the entire trip.
Form 7B enjoyed some well-earned donuts for winning “Form of the Year” by collecting the most good marks and activity marks throughout the year.
INSPIRING OUR LINGUISTS Thank you to Dr Jon Hughes from Royal Holloway who gave an inspiring talk to Year 10 and Sixth Form linguists on 'Languages: The Pathway to Career Success and Global Citizenship’

FANTASTIC GCSE RESULTS Salesian College parents, boys and teachers were extremely proud and excited to receive outstanding GCSE results on Thursday morning 23 August 2018. This year the majority of subjects are being graded using the new 9-1 scale and much has been written in the national press about the challenges facing both students and teachers with these more difficult GCSEs. Students at Salesian College have, however, matched previous levels of attainment in many aspects and surpassed them in others with 84% of students achieving grades 9-7 or A*-A. Equally outstanding was that 96% of the boys in Year 11 achieved at least eight 9-4 or A*-C grades each! 8 students attained at least 11 grades 9-7 (or equivalent). 31 students attained at least 10 grades 9-6 (or equivalent)
www.salesiancollege.com
98% of the boys gained at least five 9-4 grades including English and Maths. Mr Gerard Owens, Headmaster commented “The GCSE results achieved by all the boys in Year 11 at Salesian College are, once again, nationally outstanding and a great credit to the boys and staff who have worked so hard in partnership together. At a time of change and, in some quarters, uncertainty with the GCSE qualification, we are very happy to have again maintained excellent results with even more students achieving the top grades than last year. Parents are naturally delighted and the College is very proud that a year group and individuals who have achieved so well in sport, cultural events and many aspects of school life have now achieved such brilliant GCSE results.

MUSIC WITH ST PATRICK’S RC PRIMARY SCHOOL
On 25 May, Mr Cassidy gathered a group of music students from Year 7 and Year 10 to begin a project in collaboration with St Patrick’s RC Primary School. The children from Year 5 had written the words for a hymn in honour of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the saintly patron of our local group of Catholic Schools. Our students were given the task of composing the tune.
WINTERSHALL Twelve boys from Year 7 were chosen by their RE teachers to attend a performance of ‘The Life of Christ’ at Wintershall on 21 June. Unfortunately, one was unable to take part but the others, accompanied by Fr Pat Sherlock and Mrs Murphy, enjoyed a moving and memorable experience in the grounds of the estate. The students were part of an audience of 1400 school children and adults on a beautiful sunny day. There were over 100 costumed actors in the cast, including many youngsters from the local area. These were supported by a menagerie of live animals: sheep, tended by a sheepdog, horses, pigeons, fish, a donkey and a dove. Each scene took place in an appropriate part of the grounds, bringing home the reality of the events and the personalities of the different characters. One of our past students, Phil Street, was this year playing the part of the apostle, Peter. At the end of the performance he kindly invited us to meet ‘Jesus’, the actor James Burke-Dunsmore.
After looking at the structure of several well-known hymn and song settings, they analysed the words they had been given and decided on a rhythmic outline. Working in pairs at electronic keyboards, the students explored various melodic ideas and shared these with their teacher. Gradually, the melody and harmony emerged, ready to be committed to musical notation with the help of ‘Sibelius’. It was an intense, but rewarding workshop. During the following week, our students, escorted by Mr Cassidy and Fr Sherlock, met the boys and girls from St Patrick’s in their school hall for a first rehearsal together. We were all struck by the enthusiasm of the young pupils and the ease with which they picked up the newly composed tune. Then it was the turn of St Patrick’s to come to Salesian College to record the hymn in the College Chapel. Mr Cassidy assembled some of the high quality recording equipment from the Music School and conducted, while Dr Noble provided expert accompaniment on an electronic piano. There were two follow-up events. On 9 June, the Year 5 pupils from St Patrick’s were invited to perform “Mother Teresa’s Message” with our students at the Summer Music Concert in the College Hall, and on 19 June they returned the compliment by inviting our students to sing with them at their Music Evening. The whole project was a most enjoyable experience of combining the skills and talents in two schools, different in so many ways, but sharing a love of music and of faith.
