We have had a new take on the Editor’s hello.. As a mum, you should have a good measure of what true love really is! It isn’t the knight in shining armour or red roses accompanied with expensive chocolate. It is about doing the things you wouldn’t normally do, it is the 3am pump because you know baby will wake soon, its eating spinach during your pregnancy despite the fact you hate it, but its good for your growing bean and it is singing wind the bobbin up multiple times when you would much rather be playing a silent game of sleeping lions. These tiny acts are that of a mothers love. No one will feel as close to your children as you do, and it all starts somewhere, we talk from the start via c-section (page 19) to help you bond with your baby post birth, what about after baby is born? You will want to savour those special moments for a lifetime and we all say it when our children are older ‘I wish I had taken more photos’ so why not have professional newborn photos done (page 36) Oh and don’t forget to plan that much deserved holiday for next year (page 22) traveling with a toddler has never been so easy!

Top baby names of 2016. On the up or on the way out?
Facing mum-scrimination in the workplace? Thousands of mums are being forced out of their jobs because of discrimination. A survey of 3,200 UK women found that a shocking one in ten had already been dismissed, made to feel inadequate or treated poorly so they had left or better yet, had been made redundant. This new study shows that about 54,000 new mums are affected annually! The research, discovered by the Equality and Human Rights Commission also found that one in five mums experienced harassment or negative comments from their colleagues, employer or manager upon returning to work. Caroline Waters, deputy chair of the EHRC, says “This research reveals worrying levels of discrimination. That’s why were launching a major initiative to bring this issue to the public eye, improve awareness of the law and work with businesses and other groups alike to find workable solutions.”
SAY YES TO SPLASHING!

ou might say we’re a little obsessed with finding out the most popular baby names, so when some of our favourite baby naming websites released their data on the most popular names of 2016 we couldn’t help but take note. Bounty Baby Club, shows that whilst the very top names are ones you’ve probably heard before, there are some surprisingly unusual monikers rising through the ranks. Boy’s name Arlo is the most surprising addition - having previously been outside the top 50, it’s not jumped up to spot number 6. A spokesperson for the site explained, ‘The new trend in baby names is vowel heavy names, particularly for girls.’ ‘Male names ending in a softer letter are also becoming more popular, for example names such as Alfie, Arlo, Archie and Harry.’

Double Barrelled Beauties Double barrelled first names are trending! It is the latest must have for your little lady. Last years statistics show that there was a huge surge in hyphenated first names such as the ever popular Amelia-Rose and EllieMae. Statistics show that now one in every six baby girl names are double-barrelled.
#JUSTSAYING I often walk a fine line between being 2016’s “Super fun, super awesome” mum and the kinda “Psychotic maybe we should call the NSPCC” mum, but do you know what? I don’t care! As a mother, as a parent, there is no right or wrong way to raise your children, obviously you are to realise what is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ parenting but who writes the rules on how YOU raise YOUR kids? So lets get our scenario role play hats on. Screaming child in town (Don’t lie, we have ALL been there buddy) Do you... A) Talk them down from that massive tantrum mountain they have made out of the minuscule mole hill that was a soft and caring ‘No honey, were not buying Lego today’ B) buy the goddamn box of Lego of which you’ll probably step on at 4am and curse the s**t out of in the hope that the banshee screaming stops and breathing returns or simply take option C) ride that s**t storm out? Well whilst shopping in next my dear daughter decided that, right there was the time to throw the mother of all tantrums. I tried option A, nah-uh, she wasn’t having any of it, not even under the bribe of a chupa-chupa lolly which we would later see stuck to the dog! We then resorted to B) but of course by then, the dress she wanted in the first place was too ‘dressy’ and ergo, didn’t want it anymore, this then left me with no choice but to embrace my mum hulk and bust out option C). Whipping said stroppy child over my shoulder i made a swift exit for the nearest open door only to be ‘huffed’ at by the bint at the counter who loudly announced to the cashier “Oh goodness, I don’t think that small child is enjoying that, she is screaming and her mother is dangling her, what a terrible parent” without thinking I asked if she had kids, to which her answer was no, she said NO!!!! NO!!! She didn’t have kids, yet had the audacity to pass a comment at me. I don’t know why people without kids feel they can judge those with, even without knowing the story behind the tears.

Having read that singing to your bump soothes your baby I decided to give it a go. I felt very self conscious at the sound of my own voice singing out of tune nursery rhymes, so I decided to sing to my own choice of tunes instead. So whether I was in the car, the shower, the supermarket or cooking dinner I would turn it up and belt out whatever was playing from oasis through the glee soundtrack. I would always get feedback in the form of lots of kicking. Now that my daughter is six months old, the sound of my singing never fails to soothe. I would recommend signing to your unborn baby any day! Who knows, they could be a rockstar!

I would always say to any mum to be... Go and have photos done of your bump. I was a self conscious size 18 mum to be (for the first time) I had always wanted pictures of my bump I just felt stupid doing so. A few days prior to my due day I asked a friend who ran a photography business to take a few shots for me, to embarrassed to go to a studio. I am now so glad that I did this. Looking back on them now I’m proud of what my body achieved and I shouldn’t be ashamed. I captured those special days when I was growing my baby. Korina. Via Facebook.

Bluetooth babies?... What’s your say? A pregnancy test can tell you if you can expect a little bundle of joy in nine months, but not much else. So working with Qualcomm, First Response has created the first Bluetooth app-connected pregnancy test that provides other crucial info and guidance if you are indeed expecting. Like many gadgets, it made us go wooooooow and our partners automatically took an interest because its ‘got an app’ but what is the sense and practicality behind this? In terms of usability and form factor, the First Response Pregnancy Pro test looks and works like other pregnancy tests already on the market, nothing new about peeing on a stick, but the process is supposedly made less complicated through an IOS and Android app that walks the user through each step, including how to pee on a the test and has ‘features’ to entertain in the dreaded 3 minute wait before flashing up your result... Maybe its just me but I can think of better things to do in the 3 minutes than read pregnancy facts, especially if you are TTC and you get a negative. The First Response Pregnancy Pro Digital Pregnancy Test will have a price of around £15 to £22, considerably more expensive than traditional pregnancy tests, and they’re not reusable! Once you’re done with the test you have to dispose of the whole thing, fancy bluetooth and all. But there must be something to this app that makes it sell? It makes it almost impossible to misinterpret a positive or negative response by flashing the words YES or NO on your smart phone screen. It’s a big thumbs down from us at Salisbury Parenting, what do you think? Is it something you would use? Email your say to - Admin@charlotterosemag.co.uk.
Little Miss Independent While there are times when your children will love settling down with you for a teddy bears picnic or to do some colouring, you should also allow your child some time to play independently. Letting children play on their own isn’t mean, its important for their development, especially upward of 15 months. Dr Fin Williams a psychologist says that ‘While structured play is important for young babies - for example taking turns in games can help boost speech development it is also as important that you should allow children to have time to play on their own- if you let your child deal with situations independently it will help his/hers self esteem, resilience, competency and cognitive development.’ Make sure that there are plenty of toys around the house that will encourage independent play for your child. Dr Williams suggests dolls, teddies, role play sets, building block and crayons.

STAY SAFE WITH TODDLERS AND BABIES... YOUR MUST-DO’S It will soon be bonfire night and if you are planning on getting the family out to watch a display this year there are some rules you should follow to prevent and keep your little one safe this year: SPARKLERS are not for under fives because of the heat generated for them, 2000c is the same as a welding torch! NEVER hold your child in your arms when you are holding a
sparkler as they may try to grab it. ANY SPENT sparklers should be placed in a bucket of cold water. STAND well back from any bonfires and keep hold of your toddlers buggy or reins. BABIES and toddlers may get scared by the noise, so try a pair of ear defenders, mufflers or just watch the display from inside. Remember that little people have little ears.

WHEN DAN BECAME DAD... “I took a pregnancy test at 9dpo (days post ovulation) After trying for 9 months we both fully expected this result to loom as another big fat negative. Testing alone (we agreed to do it together) I was surprised to actually see a second pink line appear shortly before my 3 minute wait was up. I put the test directly in front of Dan on the dinner table who looked at it, and went back to eating before leaping up about 15 minutes later shouting “I’m going to be a daddy” better late than never eh Dan!”

YOUR BIRTH
Caesareans
One in four babies born in the UK are born by c-section. Whether you have planned an elective or are hoping for a natural birth its better to be prepared, just in-case...
EXPLAINED taken to confirm. Finally if forceps or ventousse haven’t been successful in aiding your baby’s safe delivery, a caesarean may be suggested.
PROS VS CONS
W
ith every celeb mum in the news at the moment all we seem to be seeing is eager mum’s to be booking their elective C-sections, choosing to give birth this way seems to of given the saying ‘Too posh to push’ a real meaning in society. But the vast majority of caesarean births performed are indeed for medical reasons. Spokesperson for WellBeing Woman, Peter BowenSimpskins, a consultant gynaecologist said “We would probably plan a c-section if your baby is in breech or bottom first or if the placenta is blocking your cervix which is known as placenta praevia; or possibly if your had a previous c-section or if your pelvis is too small to get the baby through”. You may also be considered for a c-section if you’ve already previously had a traumatic delivery previously, for example a deep tear or a difficult birth involving forceps and other medical assistance. All caesareans that are performed after active labour has started are classed as emergency c-sections even if you and your baby are not deemed to be in any immediate danger. This
said the most common type of emergency section is when your labour is not progressing which means labour is incredibly slow and contractions have stopped and/ or your cervix hasn’t dilated, the most common and life threatening emergency being that there is a cord prolapse, this is where the cord has slipped through your cervix and is cutting of baby’s oxygen
supply. Placental eruption is the seconded most common emergency reason for a medical c-section, this is when your placenta detaches from your womb and this is another potentially harmful danger to yourself and your unborn baby. A C-section may also be advised if your baby becomes distressed during labour, his or hers heart rate will be monitored and a blood sample
If a planned c-section is what is decided between you and your medical professional there are some benefits that you wouldn’t see in a natural birth. You have the advantage of being able to plan when your baby will be born, your pelvic floor will be under less strain and if you have previously had a traumatic birth you wont have the worry of it happening again. However, along with the pros come the cons; having a caesarean is major surgery and this means you will need more time to recover than you would a vaginal delivery and you may also find it harder to breastfeed immediately. There is also a risk of further problems occurring after the birth such as a bladder infection and research shows it could take you longer to get pregnant again. According to research, babies delivered by planned c-section are up to four times more likely to develop breathing problems as they may miss our of the beneficial hormonal and psychological effects of a labour, which helps the lungs to develop.
WHAT TO EXPECT
In the operating room you’ll be given an anaesthetic or, if you’ve already had an epidural they will top this up so you don’t feel anything. Your partner can also stay
with you in the room whilst the caesarean is performed. A screen will be placed across your tummy and an incision is made just above your bikini line into to womb You may feel a slight tugging sensation, some women do and some don’t) It only takes 3-5 minutes for your surgeon to perform your caesarean when the cord will then be clamped to stop blood flow and then cut, separating you from your baby. Provided everything is okay you will then be able to hold your baby whilst your placenta is delivered and your incision is stitched up, from prep to end the whole surgery should only last about 30 minutes before you are then moved into a recovery bay and then up onto the ward where midwife assistance is available if you have chosen to breastfeed.
YOUR RECOVERY
Getting out of bed will be the biggest challenge but your midwife and care team will encourage you to do this, it promotes good circulation and prevents blood clots from forming. With the help of strong painkillers you will be assisted to sit up and take a take a walk/feed baby etc although it will take about 10 days for your wound to heal. Following a caesarean you can expect to spend about 3 days in hospital under monitoring by your doctor and midwife, and when discharged home you’ll need all the help you
can get so snap the hands of anyone who can help you. Its important that you don’t do anything too strenuous that will strain your incision whilst its healing, remember you went through major surgery! Constipation and wind can also be very painful during the healing process of a caesarean so its important that your diet consists of fruit and veg to help aid a healthy stool easy to pass without straining. It’s recommended you wait to drive until your doctor is certain you can make an emergency stop safety without causing yourself any damage, although you must wait for your 6 week post op check to start exercising again. It’s also common to have a huge range of emotions after a caesarean birth, women often feel like they have cheated birth by taking the ‘easier way out’ or that they have failed by not being able to deliver their baby naturally and this can help to talk to someone about your experience, most often at your 6 week check up.
WILL I NEED A C-SECTION AGAIN?
It is possible for you to give birth naturally after a c-section but many are offered an elective although there is a 1 in 200 risk that your previous scar could rupture in labour but you can talk to your doctor about vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC)
‘I had an emergency unplanned section’ “Within 24 hours of my waters breaking I was pushing my daughter into the world, but after an hour of constantly pushing it was only just noticed that my daughter’s chin wasn’t resting on her chest as it should be, it was jutting slightly out (The Brow Position) which made birth incredibly difficult. After a doctor trying to run her manually like an ECV I was left with no choice but to have an emergency c-section which wasn’t in my plan but as soon as I was in the theatre it was over before I knew it. Although unplanned a little scary, my daughter was a healthy 9lb 3oz with no problems or complications at all.
Lindsey, 30, mum of three
‘I PLANNED FOR A C-SECTION’ “I found out at 32 weeks that my baby was breech but I had planned an all natural birth up until then, 4 weeks later I had an ECV (external cephalic version) where my midwife attempted to turn my baby round but after two failed attempts it didn’t work, my baby just didn’t want to turn around, because she was still breech I had no other option but to have an elective Caesarean. At 39 weeks gestation I went into hospital ready for my surgery, the whole ‘birth’ from anaesthetic to stitches was 20 minutes and I was so relaxed. Knowing you are going to have a c-section before it actually happens certainly helps to calm your worries”
Rachel Hempner, 25, mummy to one girl

Healing hands Soothe your tiny human with a simple massage... We show you how
Y
our baby loves nothing more than spending time with mummy, especially when it comes to the comforting feeling of skin to skin contact. Find the time in your busy day to day routines to make a quiet moment for you and your baby. A massage is a great way for you to bond with your new baby and you will both reap the benefits of improved sleep, better skin and good digestion and a massage can help calm the nervous system as well as proving to help with colic... So get going! MAKE THE MOOD
It is important to make sure that your chosen room is warm enough, remember
that babies struggle to regulate their own temperatures. Lay your baby down onto a fluffy town and pour a little almond or olive oil onto your hands. Make sure that you don’t catch your nails on baby and that you remove any jewellery on your hands or wrists before you start.
With baby still on her front, massage her legs one at a time with both hands using long and firm strokes, one hand after the other. Gently stroke your thumb down the sole of her foot and lightly press your thumb into the sole, gently squeeze each little toe to the tip.
TUMMY TIME Put your baby on her tummy, this is great for her strength and babies love it! Stroke down her back and over her peachy bottom.
YUMMY TUMMY Let baby return to her back and in a clockwise motion massage her tummy. Place both of your hands on her chest and sweep down to her toes.
ARM GOING TO STROKE YOU Stroke down lightly over one of your babies arms from the top of her shoulder right down to her hand one hand at a time so skin contact remains at all times, you can also lightly press your thumb into the pad of her hand for 3-5 seconds to relax her.
CUDDLE IT UP When massaging babies face it is important that you don’t use any oil. Simply stroke your babies face from the centre of her forehead outward towards her ears. Massage small circles around her little cheek and then finish with a cuddle!

‘BEST TIME TO TRAVEL IS WHEN THEY ARE ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD’
‘Last year we flew abroad when my youngest was just 4 months old. The flight was fine and we phoned before hand and had a bassinet reserved. Four months was a great age for a little traveller. DO pick somewhere that is family friendly. If your chosen holiday destination has a villa with a pool, designate someone to be a pool watcher, this way no harm can come by children being left unattended thinking someone else is watching them when they aren’t. ‘It’s like lots of sleepovers, you just need to make it fun’ I was pregnant and my first child was 4 when we took our first holiday abroad. We chose a package holiday so that we didn’t need to worry and they had a kid’s club included, they also ran a ‘sleepover party’ it was so handy, you would drop them of and they would do fun activities with the kids like nail painting, watching a film and having snacks, the things that make sleepovers fun. They would then put them to bed in cot beds already supplied by the resort, this allowed me and my husband to have some down time together and we just carried her back to our room on our way back that evening.

Its going to be a long nine months ahead of uncertainty and worry but they are also going to be filled with fun and happy parts, choosing names and painting the nursery is always a good start! But along side the fun of buying babygrows and testing paints you will find that your diary
will become full quickly with lots of antenatal appointments to make sure you and your baby are as healthy as can be. You will probably have a minimum of 10 appointments throughout your pregnancy, more if complications are found, it can be a lonely and daunting experience so we have put together an antenatal rescue plan to
help ease the uncertainty. We give you an insight into different tests, different timings, what will happen and what you can expect from your healthcare team, doctors and midwives over the next nine months...

scan the sonographer will measure from baby’s crown to rump and this will give them your due date. Baby’s heartbeat will also be present and you should see all his/hers limbs. The sonographer will check all of these and baby’s vital organs to make sure everything is as it should be. Most hospitals nowadays will also offer a nuchal translucency scan which measures the nuchal fold at the back of baby’s head, this is a screening for downs syndrome and is your choice if you want to proceed with this scan or not. This is the scan where you often get to take home a scan picture of your little person for their albums!
BLOOD, BLOOD AND MORE BLOOD... You had better get used too it. Blood tests are the most common and happen on a regular. Your initial blood test will be to test for your blood type and screen for your immunity against common diseases you should of been vaccinated against such as rubella, measles, syphilis and HIV. This initial blood test will also check if you are rhesus positive or negative, if you are found to be a RH negative and your partner a RH positive this could mean your baby is a positive, it is important to find out this information as your body might start to make antibodies that are dangerous to your baby, but DON’T WORRY an injection called anti-D is given with makes any risk to your unborn baby very rare.
5 - 6 weeks
You have just found out you are pregnant and should of made an appointment with you GP for as soon as possible so that they can get your pregnancy registered and into the hospital systems ready for your antenatal appointments with the specialists.
8- 12 weeks
If you haven’t had your first booking appointment with your midwife yet you should receive this in the post any day now. Your booking appointment is your first of your many antenatal appointments and this will happen before your first scan. Your midwife should carry out a blood test (Your first of many in these nine months) and take your blood pressure to work out your BMI, she will also test your urine (as if peeing on sticks wasn’t enough) but all of these tests combined will show the midwife if there are any pregnancy
health problems that you need to be aware of such as glucose levels being too high and gestational diabetes. You will also be asked a variety of questions about your personal health, partners health and any family history or conditions that run through your family such as cystic fibrosis, you will also probably be asked about your home and work circumstances. She should also give you information on what is to come, what tests and scans are available at your local hospital and also what benefits or maternity payments you may be entitled too. Now is the time to ask any questions if you are unsure on what lies ahead.
8 - 14 weeks
You should be able to finally see your little growing bean by now. At around 12 weeks (3 months) you will have your first scan. This is called a dating scan and determines exactly how old your budding bean is and when your due day should be. During your first
16 weeks
By this time your GP and midwife should both of seen your care record and you now should be able to see your familiar GP for some of your antenatal appointments, he will discuss your latest scans and screenings with you and repeat your blood pressure and urine test.
GESTATIONAL DIABETES This type of diabetes is different to your standard type 1 or 2 diabetes you might see in friends or family. This type begins in pregnancy and usually disappears immediately after birth. It affects on average 5 in 100 pregnant women and symptoms normally present about 20 weeks into your pregnancy. These symptoms include a larger than normal baby, excessive thirst or blurred vision and a high glucose presence in your urine test. It is normally handled with a healthy diet and exercise although sometimes is medicated.
Your second chance to see your baby is coming! Are you excited? This is usually (unless there are complication in which you will be offered further scans) This scan is known as your anomaly scan and this allows the sonographer to check your babies development. They will take lots of measurements during this scan to check your babies growth and make sure he is cooking nicely in your tummy! Your sonographer will also be looking for problems such as spina bifida and cleft lip palette as well as heart and major organ defects. They will also check where about your placenta is lying too to make sure that it isn’t blocking babies exit when it comes to labour day, this is called a placenta praevia. If you are keen to know if you are expecting a blue or pink bundle of joy now is the time to ask, by now your sonographer should be able to tell the sex of your baby.
25 weeks
Guess what? Its time to check your blood and urine again! Your midwife will also check your bump this time too, this allows the midwife to determined your baby’s growth rate. This is as simple as measuring from your pelvic bone to the top of your uterus; known as the symphysial-fundal height. The measurements in centimetres should roughly correspond to the number of weeks pregnant you are, for example if you are 25 weeks pregnant you should measure roughly around 25cm.
28 weeks
Another routine test, blood pressure check up, urine test and another SFH check you midwife may also do a blood test to check your glucose and iron levels.
31 weeks
Nothing exciting to report this week. More routine blood pressure checks, urine and SFH checks.
34 weeks
You guessed it, another set of routine checks but as well as these, this is the
PRE-ECLAMPSIA ...
The biggie when it comes to blood pressure checks is for this reason, a simple blood pressure check can determined whether you are suffering or likely to suffer with PE. This occurs when there is a problem detected with the placenta and could be potentially lethal to you and your baby. Symptoms start about 28 weeks and include protein in your urine, high blood pressure and a sudden swelling in your face and hands. You will be closely monitored and there is a chance your baby may be delivered early. time to discuss your birth plan with your midwife and healthcare team. You’ll be asked to write down your plan and wishes as well as what you do and do not want in terms of pain relief, how active a labour you want and who you would like in the room with you.
36 weeks
If your baby is in breech position you may be offered an EVC (External cephalic version which involves a doctor manually trying to turn baby around. Now is also the time to get that hospital bag packed! Your baby is considered full term at 37 weeks so it could be any time now!
38 weeks
The end is close! No major tests needed this week, just your standard three check ups. More blood pressure, measuring and a urine dip test.
41 weeks
If baby hasn’t made an appearance yet, you may be offered a stretch and sweep, this is a membrane sweep to try and encourage labour. A midwife will use her finger to try and break the membrane lying across the neck of your cervix. This releases the hormones called prostaglandins which are thought to help aid and stimulate a natural labour.
42 weeks
This is the longest term you can remain pregnant for, if you go any further overdue there is a risk that the placenta will start to disintegrate. If this happens, you will be induced at hospital. This is usually done with a pessary that is inserted into your vagina. Labour can take a while to get going when started this way so make sure you relax. Motherhood is pending.

QUESTION? ASK US INJECTION JABS I have read that I should wake my sleeping baby for feeds, is this true? Do I need to be waking my sleeping baby to eat? She’s 4 weeks old. In newborns who are small (especially less than six pounds at birth), you need to consider waking baby every three hours, It is not true that every baby will let you know when he or she is hungry, especially during the first weeks of life. Larger babies, who have many feeding’s during the day, may be able to sleep longer stretches at night without waking for feeding’s and still have plenty to eat. It really should be evaluated on an individual basis depending on your baby. The best way to tell if an exclusively breastfed baby is getting enough food is to closely monitor babies nappies. By four days of age, the newborn should have at least four stools and they should be changing from dark meconium to light brown, and then yellow, If your exclusively breastfed baby is not pooing much during his or her first month, you should take them to your paediatrician or GP to be weighed.

PENIS PROBLEMS
PREGNANCY FOR 30+ WOMEN What are the risks of having a baby if I’m 35 or older?
blood pressure or diabetes, that may be undiagnosed and can affect your pregnancy.
Once you conceive, and you get past the first trimester miscarriages, you face a higher risk of conceiving a baby with a chromosomal problem. This risk goes up every year. If you get pregnant at age 25, your risk of having a baby with Down syndrome, for example, is about 1 in 1,250, according to the National Institutes of Health. At age 40, the risk is 1 in 100.
You’re also at higher risk of developing certain complications during pregnancy – such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption (in which the placenta prematurely separates from the uterine wall), and placenta previa (in which the placenta lies low in the uterus, partly or completely covering the cervix).
If you’ll be 35 or older on your due date, you’ll be offered genetic counselling. This is normally done by your obstetrician after you show up pregnant, but increasingly, couples are opting for “pre-conceptual counselling” – an opportunity to plan ahead and get information before getting pregnant. Even after you get pregnant, age continues to have an effect. The older you are when you get pregnant, the more likely you are to have a chronic disease, such as high
Research also shows that your chances of having a low-birth-weight baby (less than 5 1/2 pounds) or a premature delivery increase with age. Some studies show that older women are more likely to need pitocin during labour, and most studies show a significantly higher rate of delivery by caesarean section. All of that sounds scary, but population studies don’t take into account whether or not the moms
Q&A
took good care of themselves or if they received appropriate prenatal care. Make sure you do both of those, and your chance of having a healthy baby should be similar to that of younger women who are also in good health. Women who give birth at 35 or older have a higher risk of stillbirth and maternal death (although the overall number of stillbirths and women who die in childbirth each year has dropped significantly in the United States in the last few decades). The increased risk is largely due to underlying medical problems more common in older women. Proper diagnosis and treatment will help reduce the risks for you and your baby. You can manage many of the risks of pregnancy at age 35 and up by seeing your doctor or midwife regularly for good prenatal care.
Is my infant having an erection? Discussing your baby’s privates with your paediatrician can be uncomfortable, but try not to be shy. “It’s much better to ask a question that might be perceived as embarrassing than not to ask and find out that it is actually an important question Most likely, yes. This physiologic response is involuntary and sometimes even visible on prenatal sonograms, which makes it a little easier to determine sex. “Before puberty, erections aren’t caused by sexual feelings,” says Molly O’Shea, M.D., a paediatrician in Birmingham, Michigan. “Erections are normal and indicate that a baby boy’s equipment is working just fine.” As with adult males, the stiffening is caused by penile tissue filling with blood. Many things can stimulate he blood flow, including a diaper change or washing. Erections can also indicate that your baby has a full bladder, so make sure you have a nappy nearby to avoid an unexpected dousing.
ONLY THE BEST CONTRACEPTION
How do I choose the best preschool for my child?
Can I have an IUD inserted right after delivery?
Think about choosing a preschool the same way you would think about finding a new job or a new doctor for your child. In either situation you would expect to invest lots of time and energy in making the right decision. You would ask around, go on interviews, and seek the advice of others. The same goes for preschool.
Yes. An IUD can be inserted right after you give birth, whether you’ve delivered vaginally or by c-section. It can be done while you’re still in the delivery room, ideally within 10 minutes after the placenta is delivered. Previously, you had to wait about six weeks after delivery to have an IUD inserted. Experts were concerned that an IUD might not stay in if it was inserted before your uterus had returned to its pre-pregnant state. If you decide to have an IUD inserted right after delivery, your caregiver will let you know how to make sure it’s properly positioned in your uterus. If the IUD does come out, it can usually be reinserted during a visit to your doctors office.
Because so much is riding on your choice — after all, you want your child to spend her days in an enjoyable environment — you’ll need to do your research. That means checking out local parenting magazines, the Internet, and word-ofmouth recommendations. Ask for referrals from other families; most people won’t recommend a place unless they’re truly pleased with it. If your child attends daycare, the teachers may have suggestions for you. Find out whether the school’s accredited (it should be) and whether it has clear regulations; a good one should have consistent rules that it makes clear to parents so they know what to expect. You should also ask about the teacher-to-student ratio (the fewer children a teacher has the better for your child since she’ll receive more attention)
BUGGING YOU? Is it safe to use insect repellent while I’m pregnant? Insect repellents are considered safe during pregnancy when used as recommended. (And will they be safe for breastfeeding mums.) And they’re an important part of protecting yourself from mosquito-borne viruses, especially when you’re traveling to places where these illnesses are common. Products containing the active ingredients DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 offer safe and longer-lasting protection. Oil of lemon eucalyptus (paramenthane-diol) products are also safe but most don’t last as long. Citronella products are safe but don’t last as long. Read product labels carefully to see how often to apply and be sure not to reapply more often than recommended. The percentage of DEET is an indicator of how long it will be effective – not of how well it will work. The higher the percentage, the less often you need to apply it – up to concentrations of 50 percent. (Concentrations higher than 50 percent won’t give you any added protection.) If you get a rash or other reaction from a repellent, stop using it, wash with mild soap and water, and call a local poison control centre for further guidance. If you go to a doctor, take the repellent with you.

battling the common cold and flu. Combining this with quality sleep and good nutrition really helps with energy levels and increases the chances of escaping the grasp of the horrible winter lurgy. Here are my top six tips to help motivate and keep you on top of your winter training.
1
Get a wingman/wing woman – teaming up with a friend to train with can be one of the best motivators and support that you need to continue exercising into the cold winter months. You are always there to support each other and push each other on.
2
Set a goal – whether it is to run 5k by Christmas, to be able to do 10 full press ups, lose 4lbs in body fat or just be able to run around after the kids for longer than 5 minutes, set yourself something that is realistic and that you can challenge yourself to achieve over a 6-8 week period.
3
Bite the bullet and get outside – Sometimes we think just a little too
long and are able to talk ourselves out of it. When it’s cold, dark and wet, the level of satisfaction you’ll experience after your workout magically increases! Which also helps with doing it again.
4
Warm up – It really helps if you are warm before you get out in the cold, so I recommend doing 5 minutes of squats, star jumps and maybe even burpees before you train.
5
New kit – go and grab yourself some new workout gear. Not only is it an incentive to go and rock your new wardrobe, seasonal appropriate clothing will keep you warm and seen on those dark winter days and nights.
6
Get the tunes pumping – music is a massive motivator that can push you through your workout. Research shows that music elevates your mood, distracts us from pain and fatigue and helps to increase endurance. So it may be time to update that playlist‌. Spice Girls anyone?

Lady BEHIND
Heartwarming images of newborn babies were captured thanks to a photographer’s knack of getting them to sleep so she can snap them dreaming - The DailyMail online
T
hey say that photographs can say a thousand words, but if this is the case then why do we end up speechless when it comes to those oh so cute baby snaps. Don’t take my word for it though, we met with Dorset based newborn photographer Karen Wiltshire to talk to her about just what is entailed in the posing, pouting and shooting of these gorgeous little humans. We took the opportunity to dig deep into Karen about her awardwinning baby, child and family photography, and to get to know the lady behind the camera, as well! After all, amazing pictures that make us speechless were Karen specialises in maternity, newborn and baby, children and family portraits. Having whisked an award from The Guild of Photographers in “Photographer of the Year” in 2014 she then went onto then become the very first Craftsman of Children’s photography. Unlike most Karen threw her passion into a business, a business that would later shine in the world of newborn photography, KW Photography, has been established for almost six years with Karen’s work having been featured in the national and international media, and of course, what is better than keeping it at home close to the heart, in Salisbury Parenting magazine.
BEHIND THE LENS
How many babies have you photographed to date? Oh, that’s a tough one! Literally hundreds, if not thousands by now! I have my own private clients and I’m also a professional newborn photography trainer, teaching other photographers. So, between those two roles, I’m usually working with several babies each week.
How old are the babies that you photograph? The babies are typically aged less than 14 days old. This is the gorgeous newborn stage when they sleep lots and are still curled up, as they were in the womb. This is the best time to get the sleeping baby photographs that parents love. You photograph children of all ages though? Yes, primarily I am a newborn photographer, but I also photography older babies, older children and families, both in the studio and out on location. Family portrait sessions are popular as the photos make great gifts for birthdays, Christmas and special occasions like Mother’s Day. With babies, the sitting up stage (around 6-8 months) is a great opportunity for photos. My first birthday ‘Cake Smash’ photo shoots are getting really popular too! Tell us more about the cake smash photoshoots. They sound fun! Oh,
Toby Giles - Personal Fitness Instructor
When did you become a specialist in newborn photography? After a year, I decided to specialise. At that time, newborn photography was not as popular in the UK as it is now. But it was big in the USA thanks to the work of Anne Geddes in the 1990s. I trained with the leading UK-based newborn photographers to develop the necessary skills. Although I’m a mum of two (to Lizzie, 10, and Tom, 12), there really is an art to newborn photography. I learnt a lot about how to pose babies and, crucially, how to keep them safe during a photography shoot.
yes. Cake smashes are lots of fun! The one-year-old is photographed with a giant iced cupcake and literally, smashes up the cake! I photograph all the mess and laughter, as well as the clean-up afterwards. I have an adorable mini roll top bath and the child splashes in the water, playing with the bubbles. Their little personalities really come out during a cake smash. Babies and parents love it! A video about my cake smashes actually went viral recently. It has been watched by more than 5.5 million people and so far has been shared almost 100,000 times! Off the back of that, I have had bookings from families based across the UK and even from other countries! Finally, what do you love best about your job? I love it when parents see the photos I have taken of their baby for the first time. They are thrilled with them and seeing them so happy makes my job worthwhile.
How To Make One Plus One Make A Happy Two Kate Middleton did it, Madonna went and did it several times over so surely being pregnant with number two and having an active toddler couldn’t be that hard? I started to wonder or more worry my way through thinking how I would manage a second pregnancy should the time occur... I have spoken to a lot of mums in my career and have a lot of friends who have more than one child but do we actually ever realise it might be a catastrophe? Is this why we as single child families are yet to extend to two, three or more children? Childfree I went food shopping with my best friend and two god children, at the time they were still young and with an age gap of just a little over 2 years, it seemed like a piece of cake to me... At least until meltdown 1 of what seemed unlimited happened. Child one hadn’t been allowed the magazine and doughnut she had taken upon herself to take of the shelf and as child two rampaged the shop harassing the local OAPs it all felt a little daunting, and I was part of this parade. They weren’t my children so why was I feeling the scorns and disapproving looks from other shoppers nearby? I didn’t feel ashamed or even in the slightest embarrassed. I felt an over whelming sense of mum guilt, sympathy, fear and a need to want to help my friend, this mum who clearly just wanted to do a shop and get home. As a mum of only one I can only imagine how she feels on a day to day basis. But I guess it gets better, why else would we expand our families after all? I mean come on, lets look at Kate Middleton, she has two children with similar age caps to my godchildren and rumoured to be planning if not cooking a third?! So I got thinking... Lets make it easy and look at the steps.
YOU HAVE GOT YOUR PARENTING BADGE
LETS GO WITH AGE GAPS
Its always a big deal when it comes to age gaps and the years between children has grown since 2009 and is it any wonder? Parents are now tending to leave an age gap of about 3 years according to a study by Bounty in May 2014 while mums like Kate Middleton are leaving a ‘standard’ two year age gap between their kids. Researches seem to think that this is because this is the most difficult gap, at this age a toddler is at his/hers most egocentric and the arrival of a newbie baby is often deeply frustrating for them. This is probably why mums often wake in the night wondering how they are going to handle the manic of mayhem that is a daily routine with two! If I was to have my second child about now, how would I do it? How on earth would I be able to do bath time, feeding, playtime or in fact any time at all with a newborn baby and a hyper toddler. Founder of LuLubaby Louise Van den Bergh says that ‘Every mother expecting number two has wondered at some stage “How am I going to cope?” See.. You are not alone. Look at the number of mums who have had more than one child, they have all managed it and you will too. Your hormones are to blame (no seriously, its not an excuse this time) after the birth they will return to normal and you will feel in control again. One of the things that seems to upset second time mums to be is that they spend so much time worrying or focusing on how they will cope with two that the pregnancy ticks on by and they haven’t really spent much time thinking about it or paying enough attention to the bump as they did their first and this is a common worry I’ve seen in lots of mums I have been in contact with. Bonding with your bump is a key part of pregnancy and becoming a new mummy, stop worrying about how you will cope and cosy up with bump after all, you need to get to know each other soon.
According to experts if you are pregnant with your second child the key is to just relax. You need to remind yourself that you already have your parenting badge and cut your parenting teeth as it were, you have done this once before. Remind yourself that the basics of babies, the nappies and the feeding’s are automatic and this will leave you with more time to enjoy both your toddler and your baby! Remember though that your second child might not be a clone of your first, they are often very different. If you got lucky and had a fantastic sleeper and eater the first time round you are probably slightly less stressed than you would be before but then again if you had it hard the first time round with baby number one remember it could be different with number two. Each baby is different, they are just little humans after all. Yes you will probably face a whole new set of struggles but that is the beauty of being a parent and you will then have the benefit of the experience if you go on to have more children in the future. It is just finding the routine that works best for you and your children.. Once you have that sorted, every one will feel happier and the calm control will return.
ACTION PLAN PARENT
Start to consider ‘The Plan’ consider your day to day activities and form an action plan for them. It will only help you to think ahead so that you can be prepared. Things will normally come to a head nearer bath time because everyone is tired, if your newbie is cluster feeding in the evening then your toddler is likely to be fractious. Try timing your feeds right with bath time in the evening so for example, feed baby at 5pm and do toddler bathing at 6pm, you could also get a ‘treasure box’ a box of special toys just for your toddler to play with whilst you do your evening feeds. If you are still worried and still wondering whether or not to throw this curve ball into your first born world remember that when you give birth to your second child you are giving both your children a secure future, with a sibling. What you are giving is the greatest gift possible to your children and you should feel proud of that! So fist pump the air because mumma... You’ve got this!
ONE, TWO, THREE TO MANY
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR FIRST BORN FOR YOUR IMPENDING NEWBIE
DON’T MAKE A FUSS The common thing to do is make a big deal about the baby during the pregnancy and you should, but don’t over do it. Your toddler wont get as much attention either during this time so its important your attention is divided. What matters is that she knows there is a baby in your tummy and that you continue to love her the same, that her home is her home and her routine stay the same, these are the important things. INVOLVE HER/HIM Make sure that your first born knows she still has an important role in your family, ask her to help burp the baby or pass you the wipes. This way the baby is hers too and not just yours. MAKE TIME FOR HER Some mums give their first born a gift when the baby arrives, make sure everyone gets involved and they can bring her to see you and the baby in hospital. This will stop your first born from feeling left out of the family.

Healthy child
TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HEALTHY • Make sure your child’s vaccines are up to date. You can help protect your child from some viruses and bacteria simply by making sure his vaccinations are up to date and that he gets a yearly flu shot. • Do what you can to boost your child’s immunity naturally. Offer your child a variety of healthy foods so he gets the nutrients he needs. Make sure he gets plenty of sleep each night as well as lots of physical activity every day. • Make sure your child washes his hands. Regular hand washing is the simplest, most effective way to get rid of cold and flu bugs. Teach your child to wash his hands with soap and warm water after he uses the toilet, before meals and snacks, and as soon as he comes home from school, the playground, or a friend’s house.

GLOW ME THE WAY LumiPotti is the night-light potty for night toilet training. A removable, movement activated night light fits in the back rest of the potty and blinks on when your child sits up in bed. It stays on to guide them out of bed to use the potty and back again. THE (TERRIBLE TWOS)
TANTRUM TREATMENT The terrible twos seems to be the new name for the tantrumming toddler of today but what we don’t realise as parents is that they are probably feeling scared and cross with themselves and us getting angry at them wont help. US experts in this field have found that twoyear-olds who are punished for having tantrums tend to become more
anxious and withdrawn, especially more in the boys. Toddlers who are punished very quickly learn to hide their emotions from us says Nancy McElwain an associate of human development at Illinois university. Toddlers then become increasingly anxious about their feelings for fear of negative consequences to their actions. So instead of shouting at them or getting cross at them, hug it out of them! A hug or huge distraction is generally the way to go when it comes to toddler tantrums.
Whatever your baby’s age, here at SP we’ve got a tasty meal or snack suggestion to tempt their tiny taste buds.
WEANING At this stage in life milk is still your primary source of nutrition. As important it is that your child gets solid foods, weaning is about introducing new textures and tastes as it is nutrients.
OLDER
66%
of parents think children are out of night time nappies before they are four, according to Huggies DryNites survey. IN FACT, one in five still isn’t dry by four and a half. It’s just one of those things...
Nutrition
Between 8 and 12 months is the prime time to introduce your baby to new foods, colours and textures. This is a good time to be encouraging baby to learn to chew.
6m+ Pear and pea puree Peas are packed with vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin B, iron for healthy blood and zinc which helps the body repair itself! * Chop one peeled and cored pear and simmer in boiling water for 10 minutes, add a handful of frozen peas at the last minute and then blend into a puree.
6m+ sweet potato and peach puree Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins A, C and B6 which are all super good for healthy eyes. *Bake a sweet potato for 45 mins, 20 mins in pop a diced and peeled peach into the oven with it. When both are cooked peel the potato and puree the two together.
9m+ Hummus, oatcakes and cherry tomatoes
9m+ Hard boiled egg and sliced ham
Hummus contains protein to aid muscle growth and oatcakes release little bursts of energy slowly to help your little one go on for longer. *Spread one oatcake with a thin layer of hummus and top with sliced sweet cherry tomatoes which are a sweet treat and packed full of vitamins.
Both ham and eggs are high in protein and eggs are also a good source of vitamin D - Essential for maintaining strong healthy bones. *Hard boil one egg for a few minutes and peel, allow to cool before slicing and serve with pieces of chopped ham.
2-3y+ Apples and raisin toast
2-3y+ Asparagus with an egg and oil dip
Raisins and bread will help your ones little tummy stay longer for longer. *Heat 1tbsp of butter in a saucepan and add half a grated apple and half a grated pear with a pinch of cinnamon. Toast a piece of raisin bread ad pop the warm fruit on top.
Asparagus contains the B vitamin Folate; and eggs contain choline which helps regulate brain function. *Boil one egg for each toddler and then dip in cold water. Steam some asparagus until the stems are tender and drain and cool. Peel the egg and mash with a little olive oil to make a dip.
BONFIRE BURNS - HOW TO TREAT THEM With bonfire night just around the corner burns can happen no matter how careful you are or how vigilant you are. Follow these steps if your child should get a burn this November.
1
Hold the burned area under cold running water for a minimum of 10 minutes, this will cool the skin.
2
If cold running water isn’t available use any cold liquid, iced juice, milk etc the faster you intervene with the cool liquid the less pain and minimal scaring will occur.
3
Once you have cooled the burn with a cold running liquid cover the burn in cling film, this will reduce the
infection risk and then as you should with all burns, ring 999 in serious cases or your local health authority or hospital for further medical advice.

DESCRIBE BIRTH IN ONE WORD
Incredible
WHAT WAS YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF BIRTH AND THE FIRST FEW MOMENTS
I have to an extent. I won’t be sharing their own personal experiences because I believe that they are not old enough to decide for themselves what they would like the world to know about them.
FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING A MUM?
WHAT HAS HAVING CHILDREN TAUGHT YOU?
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Go getter Clare Free is the queen of capturing funny parent hood moments in a perfect picture but she feels being a mum is the best thing yet
YOU’VE CHOSEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN OUT OF THE PUBLIC EYE, WHY IS THIS?
I have had three c-sections. Each has been magical, especially that moment when you meet your longed for and dreamed about baby. Our last baby was born 4 weeks early so he was whizzed off to special care after a brief cuddle but my husband was able to go with him so I felt happy knowing he was there caring for him while they patched me up.
Everything, I absolutely love being a mum. I love the snuggles, the love, the learning, the interaction, the silly moments when you dance around the kitchen together. It wasn’t until our first two children started to grow up that I realised just how much I love it and began to yearn for another baby. Now we have him too I am making sure I really do enjoy every minute.
‘I Follow My Instincts. I Know What Is Best For My Children’
I draw when my baby is asleep and I’m with him being Mum, going swimming, going to the swings etc when he’s up and about. I’ve always worked very long hours so I suppose juggling the children and work is second nature now.
To follow my instinct and that I know what is best for my child. As a mother you are bombarded with advice from everyone, it can be hard to know what to do for the best sometimes so, just follow your instinct, you know your child better than anyone else in the world. Our Facebook page saw a rocket of followers into 10,000 in months! How did that happen? I think its because people are seeing my cartoons and sharing them with each other. Some of the big Facebook pages are sharing my cartoons so that helps to get them out there to people.
It has taught me a great deal. I have found patience I didn’t know I had- most of the time, sometimes I end up getting a bit fed up if I have asked a billion times for something to be put away etc. I have learnt the meaning of love, I don’t think you know what love is until you have a child, there’s nothing like it.
WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION TO START DRAWING COME FROM?
My husband. I had a load of ideas for cartoons and initially tried to find a
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR DRAWING INSPO FROM?
It all comes from our family life.
HAVE YOU HAD TO GIVE ANYTHING UP/SACRIFICE ANYTHING TO BE A MUM?
Yes, I think all Mums do. We sacrifice our lovely flat tummies when we have our babies, we sacrifice our time and sleep and a host of other things. Heck we even sacrifice the right to go for a pee on our own. But it’s all worth it.
DO YOU HAVE ANY GUILTY PLEASURES?
I am a total chocolate addict. If its around I would eat it all. I also sneak a bowl of popcorn most nights, ideally in the bath, with a cup of tea.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PARENTING TIP?
Stay calm, or at least try to. Because, while the kids melt down around you they can calm down again if you are calm. Its not always easy though, and I don’t always manage it.
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A MUM?
Yes, although in my mid-20’s I went off the idea for a while as I was busy enjoying myself and getting out to see the world.
IF YOU COULD INVENT ONE THING FOR A NEW MUM WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? A time machine so that they could keep going back to those first few days of cuddles with a warm, snuggly newborn.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE A NEW MUM?
There is so much advice out there it can be overwhelming but my main piece of advice is to enjoy your baby. Cuddle him/her, love him/her, and be calm around them.
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE RUNNING OUR FUNNY FAMILY AND FIND THE TIME TO BE ‘MUM’
cartoonist to work on them but couldn’t find anyone who was available. When I had our baby I was a bit bored on maternity leave so my husband suggested I tried drawing the cartoons myself.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR PARENTING STYLE IS?
WE CAN CERTAINLY RELATE TO CLARE’S CARTOONS
I wish I had one, I think ‘making it up as I go along’ would be the best description of what I do….

Crayon Rocks® are a fantastic creative tool for children. They work to encourage, develop and strengthen the tripod grip, due to their ergonomic shape. They simply can’t be held in a closed fist! The minute a little one picks a Crayon Rock up, they are using the correct tripod grip, or pencil grip, and are preparing their hands for writing. Because of how wonderfully tactile and easy to use they are, they have also proved brilliant for children with learning or physical difficulties, like dyspraxia, cerebral palsy and autism. Furthermore, our crayons are fun! They are bright and bold, and produce fabulous deep colours. Older children enjoy using them to all different effects, or with Rubeez to add pattern and texture to their drawings. Made of US-grown soy wax, a sustainable resource unlike the usual paraffin or petroleum wax, they are 100% non-toxic, and their shape means that they don’t break easily, unlike other crayons. Mineral pigments are added to give them their gorgeous colours. They really are a super-crayon!
