Darkness and silence smother the confines of these two thin paper walls. I lie latent with potential, like a biological engine waiting for ignition. I yearn to be held in the comforting warmth of earthy fingers. I crave for light, I crave for water, I crave for love. I sense movement, after an eternity of languishing on a shelf, my journey has finally begun. My paper prison walls are torn down as life-giving sunlight floods over me. Anticipation tingles through my fingertips, as I tenderly pick up the fragile seed. I wonder to myself if this tiny being senses its instinctive future transformation. Curiosity creeps in as imagination flows through my mind. I anticipate the day when this tiny seed will be fully grown, but stop. Wait. I must be patient. The air is fresh and new, budding with warmth and optimism, whilst light and life return after the empty husk of winter. Meticulously sifting through the rich soil, I choose the perfect spot to lay down my tiny dormant creature. The earth-infused air drifts up into my nostrils as my mind fills with the heady scent of nature. I tuck the seed in lovingly, surrounding its body in a nutritious peaty bed, burrowing it just below the surface. 10
I find solace in knowing that in time, we will reunite once again. Days go by. The little seed I once knew has miraculously evolved. I greet the slender green body that has burst through the blanket of dark soil, with a welcoming smile. With each day that passes my impatience melts away, being replaced with a fuelling enthusiasm to reap the rewards of my labour. Warm glowing rays of summer sun stream down and invigorate the plants luscious, thriving leaves. Flowers blossom and nature casts its perennial spell. I love escaping into the garden, into my thoughts, into my place of tranquility. I cherish the peaceful moments I’m able to devote to my growing green friend in a timeless, unhurried world. The broad green vine releases a melodic snap as ballooning crimson fruits fall to the earth. Life has flourished simultaneously with the seasons. Despite my personal stresses and worries, the garden has taught me to be mindful of nature’s true pace. No longer do I crave instant gratification, growth is an extraordinary journey worth travelling. My mouth salivates with each mouthwatering bite of fruit, evoking tender memories of our shared journey together. It makes me wonder, who was really nurturing who?
