Port-Said
A Case of Urban Identity Crisis
DESIGN PROBLEM: The Architecture & Urban Identity Crisis in Egyptian Cities
PROBLEM DEFINITION After studying literature, looking at examples and analysing our personal experience, we concluded that Urban identity is composed of three main aspects. The first, physical aspect, which is a factor of the Urban fabric, grain and texture. Second is the social aspect manifested in the human scale interaction level. The social bond between individuals, spaces and groups. The third is the transcendental aspect of Perception; the collective image that the world projects.
PORTSAID’S IDENTITY The urban identity of Portsaid is a mixture of 3 layers. The economical side driven from its function as a hub for trade. It’s cultural identity springing from its location within its neighbouring Mediterranean cultures. Finally, the perception of Portsaid nationally as a global connector.
Urban Identity Crisis-Thesis I- Group
INTERVENTION STRATEGY Our approach is to consciously revitalize the city through preserving the old architecture and heritage so that people would understand the importance of this heritage while at the same time develop a contemporary expression that fits both the ongoing development and the global perception of Port Said
6
WHY CULTURAL CENTER? Culture has the ability to preserve community by increasing social connections within the neighborhoods. Art has always been linked to architectural identity; various cities around the world that are known for their culture, Ballet remains the main feature of Moscow and Opera is the sole of Venice.
ESSENCE OF PORTSAID On an urban scale the arcades have transformed the city boundaries to BLURRED LINES. Walking along Port-Said, one doesn’t know where the architecture starts and where the street ends.
Urban Identity Crisis-Thesis I- Group
DESIGN INTENT The application of the essence of the arcades solves the challenge of creating a landmark to the city and the Mediterranean culture through experience rather than through form.
WHY ARCADES? ARCADES in Port-Said are the simplest feature that shows the relation between the human being and the built environment. This Architectural feature has lent the urban space part of the built environment and vice versa.

“... RB//IC wanted to go beyond the question of What is the story about? To How was the story written? Through creating an ambient space articulated by a journey inside the pavilion enabling visitors to explore the key figures “stories” in a curious way highlighting successful practice of Architecture opposing its relevant contextual challenges/problems allowing at some particular moments a dialogue between these icons and their static background challenges.”

AUC CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
The idea of the project is focused on finding in the performing arts inspiration and connections for the making of architecture … the making of meaning, experience, function, and structure. The first stage of our project is conceptual, experimenting with the different media of dance, music, and drama and identifying meanings and different modes of meaning making. The second stage is focused on attempts to translate the identified meanings into experiential and structural expressions. The third stage focuses on the making of architecture out of the discoveries understandings emerging out of the first two stages.
In all performing arts there are common keywords they share even though there may have different nuances in each medium; for example: entertainment – series – sequence – steps – movement – structure – speed – rhythm – beat – balance - expression – emotion – release – spatial experience – performance – audience – body-being - aesthetic pleasure … to mention some. Most of these words can be used in reference to architecture and structures. Can we delve into the realm of such resonance … to see what we can learn about making a more relevant architecture to house the performing arts?

INDIVIDUAL EXPLORATIONS The entrance of the pavilion is really low so that the user should be grounded. Then, they would gradually move upwards until they are above the ground with the only option to jump off the peak back to the ground.
“A GROUNDED CYCLE, DEFYING GRAVITY.”
The essence behind our structure is creating the cycle journey whilst reflecting on it and the agony of the break dancer. By the end of the cycle, you take a leap of faith and jump where you are finally letting go of the negative energy held within and reconnecting with your origins.

CONCRETE RIBBON
Heba Elsawy
My concept was aiming to recapture the stillness that has been robbed in this age of distraction that we live in. To let the building be a reminder everyone of who they really are.
My design prolem was trying to grant users the right to silence and moments of intimacy that comes with silence.
Floor Plan
The concrete ribbon structure engulfs you and reminds you of who you are. Each step along the curved surface shifts your center of gravity. Each step will be a reminder to force you to be aware of yourself. Stillness is all about awareness. 63
