REFRIGERATION EDUCATIONAL UNIT
This refrigeration unit has been developed for making teaching and experimentation possible through the use of a cooling system for industrial application, incorporating a Freon cold generating circuit in which mono ethylene Glycol is circulated in a 50% aqueous solution. A metal framework, with work desk in plastics, supports a Freon compressor with relevant accessory equipment, cold users, Glycol circulation pump and control board. GENERAL COMPRESSOR Freon compressor with a maximum capacity of 5,500 refrigeration units per hour is driven by an electric motor and it is of the open type, or semihermetic or hermetic upon choice Accessory equipment of compressor includes condenser and Freon equipment. The condenser and relevant copper tubings, water-cooled, is fitted with a control valve, an electrovalve and a water meter to measure the consumption rate. Freon circuit includes all equipment required for: 1. Automatic or manual operation of compressor 2. Automatic or manual control of Freon circuit operation 3. Thermal and mechanical control equipment for Freon circuit. REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT The refrigeration circuit is made up with Freon / Glycol heat exchanger, Glycol circulation pump, Glycol meter and relevant expansion tank as well as refrigeration users. The heat exchanger has steel body and copper tubings: Freon expands through tubes and cools the Glycol circulating inside the cylinder body. The Glycol circulation pump of gear type with 15 m. head, 250 litre per hour flow rate is driven by a motor rated o.5 hp. On the pump delivery line, two thermostats are installed for the control of Glycol temperature. The Glycol meter is a specially designed unit for the measurement of cooling liquids. It is divided into two parts, one separated from the other: The lower one contains the measurement equipment (turbine) and the upper one contains a mechanical indicator of flow. A pneumatic tank for Glycol is installed on the circuit, ensuring a sufficient head for regular operation of all users.

REFRIGERANT UTILISATION The refrigeration users on the system are of a type in all similar to those that are most suitable for a standard experimentation on refrigeration circuits, i.e. a conservation cell with inside tanks, heat exchanger) these can be installed, on request, as a supplement to those already fitted. This is made possible because of the easy connection to the already provided liquid tubings for refrigerant circulation, the very simple temperature control and instruments installed. The conservation cell for frozen foods is of a plastic sheet construction with foam polystirene insulation, external layer in wood and cover with lock. Internally, with a fan, a set of tubings is provided consisting of finned and galvanised welded tubes of spiral form, 3/4" in diameter, which ensure a wide and evenly distributed cooling surface. Cell temperature is recorded by a thermometer. A thermo-couple of needle type provides to record temperature values inside of bodies subject to freezing. The cold absorption set simulating the user source is made up of 4 straight tubes jointed to welded tube bends. An armored electric resistance rated 1,300 watts is installed in each of these tubes. The resistance arrangement has been conceived so that they can be set in progressively, thus regulating heat absorption to the operator's desire, through the cooling liquid. This set of tubes is sealed in a proper cell thermally insulated. TUBINGS All components and tubings is which low temperature liquid flows are thermally insulated by neoprene lagging. CONTROL BOARD The control board embodying all electric safety and control devices for compressor, pump and electric resistances, includes the additional control equipment as follows: ¾ Pressure gauge and thermometer on Freon inlet to compressor ¾ Low pressure control ¾ Pressure gauge and thermometer on Freon outlet from compressor ¾ High pressure control ¾ Electric-meter for resistances consumption ¾ Electric-meter for motor power consumption measurement ¾ Thermostats. The following temperatures are additionally taken on the fluid circuits: ¾ Condenser water inflow ¾ Condenser water outflow ¾ Freon on condenser outlet ¾ Freon on evaporator inlet
temperature up to -20°C., and a simulator of users through electric resistances. Should additional users of a particular type be required to meet some educational requirements (air conditioning, refrigeration) ¾ Freon on evaporator outlet ¾ Freon on compressor outlet ¾ Glycol on heat exchanger inlet ¾ Glycol on heat exchanger outlet. Moreover there are: ¾ Thermocouple and thermometer for frozen food cell ¾ Glycol meter ¾ Compressor oil pressure gauge ¾ Water meter for water circulating in Freon condenser. TYPICAL EXPERIMENTS PERFORMED WITH THE EDUCATIONAL REFRIGERATION UNIT G.F.D. 5000/02 The operative versatility of this unit together with the existance of a dual circuit in it, i.e., Freon Glycol and the particular instrument embodied in the control panel as well, offers a range of educational experiments possibilities that is by far wider than that obtainable by the use of direct expansion circuit. It is possible to make comparisions of theoretical with actual values concerning cooling power, electric input and efficiency, further to the determination of parameters related to mechanical parts such as piston, rods and hand wheel. Heat exchangers (evaporator and condenser) are each operated by a refrigerant mixture of different nature (Water/Freon and Freon /Glycol): this makes it possible to conduct comparable tests addressed to theoretical data and practical tasks for the conditions of operation mentioned here. Cold users can be put into quite different operational conditions with regard to the practical utilisation of a freezer and the simulation of the use of the thermal absorption equipment for educational purpose. The effects produced by these conditions, in respect of the cold generating equipment (compressor, evaporator and accessories), offer a wide range of possibilities for a comparison of theoretical with true experimental data in relationship with the unit capacity range, its efficiency and practical usage.
